Abstract Background To identify the prognosis of Japanese patients with collecting duct carcinoma (CDC). Methods We used a hospital-based cancer registry data in Japan to extract CDC cases that were diagnosed in 2013, histologically confirmed, and determined the first course of treatment. We further investigated treatment modalities and estimated overall survival (OS) by the Kaplan–Meier method. Results A total of 61 CDC patients were identified. The 5-year OS rate for all CDC patients who were diagnosed in Japan during 2013 was 23.6% (95% CI: 15.0–37.4), with a median OS of 14 months (95% CI: 12–24). The 5-year OS rate for CDC patients at stages I, III, and IV were 53.0% (95% CI: 29.9–94.0), 35.7% (95% CI: 19.8–64.4), and 3.4% (95% CI: 0.5–23.7), respectively. Noteworthy, the 1-year OS for stage IV patients was 27.6% (95% CI: 0.5–23.7) and the median OS was only 5 months (95% CI: 4–12). We further examined the OS for advanced disease according to treatment modalities. Abstract Electrochemically inserting and extracting hydrogen into and from solids are promising ways to explore materials’ phases and properties. However, it is still challenging to identify the structural factors that promote hydrogen insertion and extraction and to develop materials whose functional properties can be largely modulated by inserting and extracting hydrogen through solid-state reactions at room temperature. In this study, guided by theoretical calculations on the energies of oxygen reduction and hydrogen insertion reactions with oxygen-deficient perovskite oxides, we demonstrated that the oxygen vacancy ordering in Sr(Fe1−x Co x )O y (SFCO) epitaxial films can be stabilized by increasing the Co content (x ≥ 0.3) and revealed that it plays a key role in promoting proton accommodation into the SFCO lattice. We also show that the electrical resistance of SFCO films can be reversibly modulated by electrochemical proton insertion and extraction, and the modulation exceeds three orders of magnitude for Sr(Fe0.5Co0.5)O2.5 epitaxial films. Our results provide guidelines for controlling material properties through the insertion and extraction of hydrogen and for designing and exploring hydrogen-insertion materials.

Abstract Background Multi‐institutional faculty development programs for chief residents were lacking in Japan. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the program for enhancing the knowledge and behaviors of chief residents at the national level. Methods Six participants completed self‐assessment questionnaires at three points: before, immediately after, and 6 months post‐program. Knowledge and behavior changes were compared using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results Significant improvements in knowledge were observed and maintained at 6 months. However, behavioral changes were limited, with significant improvements only in counseling skills. Conclusion The program effectively increased knowledge but faced challenges in translating it into sustained behavioral change.

It has occurred to marketers that the senior market is not a single homogeneous segment but a diverse group of consumers, and that marketing strategies should be tailored to this diversity. However, existing research has not provided sufficient frameworks for capturing heterogeneity among the senior market. In this study, we used future time perspective (FTP) and future self-continuity (FSC) as indicators of diversity in the senior market and conducted an exploratory survey among senior women. The results showed that FTP had a negative effect on purchasing activity for non-consumable goods, whereas FSC had a positive effect. An interaction was also observed between FTP and FSC, indicating that the most active consumers were “senior women who have a strong connection with their future selves but feel that their remaining time is not long.” In contrast, “senior women who have a strong connection with their future selves and feel that their remaining time is long” tended to refrain from financial expenditures on the aforementioned goods.

Abstract Obesity, a major risk factor for various metabolic diseases, often results in dysfunctional white adipose tissue and altered adipogenesis leading to ectopic fat accumulation, inflammation, and insulin resistance. On the other hand, cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) nut worldwide consumption and production is increasing steadily, which augments the mass of byproducts to be discarded. Indeed, cashew apples and cashew shells have shown potent effects to lower adiposity weight in human and animal models. However, the direct effect on adipocyte differentiation still remains unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the biological effect of cashew nut or kernel (CK), dried cashew apple (DA), and cashew shell (SH) ethanolic extracts on 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation. SH showed strong inhibition on adipocyte differentiation by downregulating transcription factors, PPARγ, C/EBPα, and SREBP-1. DA also inhibited the transcription factors accompanied by reduced lipid accumulation, while proteins for de novo lipogenesis were unchanged. Finally, CK did not alter any markers in adipocyte differentiation, however, interestingly adiponectin level was significantly increased. Concisely, our findings showed that CK ameliorates adiponectin production without interfering adipogenesis, while DA lowers lipid accumulation and SH suppresses adipogenesis.

Abstract Background Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a promising treatment for knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, exercise therapy and activities of daily living (ADL) guidance are recommended as core treatments in the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) guidelines. Yezo virus (YEZV) is an emerging tick-borne virus that causes acute febrile illness. It has been continuously reported in patients and ticks in Japan and China since its first identification in Hokkaido, Japan. While serological tests have demonstrated that YEZV infections are prevalent in wild animals, such as raccoons (Procyon lotor), the determinants of infection in wild animals remain largely unknown. We examined the prevalence of YEZV in invasive raccoons, native tanukis (raccoon dogs, Nyctereutes procyonoides albus), and ticks in six study areas in Hokkaido between 2018 and 2023 to identify ecological factors underlying YEZV infection in wild animals. YEZV RNA fragments were detected in 0.22% of the 1,857 questing ticks. Anti-YEZV antibodies were detected in 32 of the 514 (6.2%) raccoon serum samples and in 5 of the 40 (12.5%) tanuki serum samples. Notably, the seroprevalence in raccoons varied significantly in one of the study areas over the years, that is, 0.0%, 60.0%, and 28.6% in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively, implying the temporary emergence of YEZV microfoci. By analyzing the tick load and YEZV seropositivity in raccoons in a field-based setting, we found a positive correlation between adult Ixodes ovatus load and YEZV-antibody positivity, highlighting the importance of I. ovatus in YEZV infection in wild animals. We also explored the environmental and host factors influencing YEZV seropositivity in raccoons and tanukis and found that landscape factors, such as the size of forest area around the trap site, were crucial for YEZV seropositivity in these animals. The significant variables for YEZV seropositivity in raccoons were partially different from those affecting tick infestation intensity in raccoons. The present results extend our understanding of tick-borne virus circulation in the field, emphasizing the unique ecology of the emerging YEZV.

Revealing interactions between ticks and wild animals is vital for gaining insights into the dynamics of tick-borne pathogens in the natural environment. We aimed to elucidate the factors that determine tick infestation in wild animals by investigating ticks on invasive raccoons (Procyon lotor) in Hokkaido, Japan. We first examined the composition, intensity, and seasonal variation of ticks infesting raccoons in six study areas in Hokkaido from March 2022 to August 2023. In one study area, ticks infesting tanukis (raccoon dog, Nyctereutes procyonoides albus) were collected in May to July in both 2022 and 2023, and questing ticks were collected from the vegetation by flagging every other week in the same period. Next, we screened 17 environmental and host variables to determine factors that affect the number of ticks infesting raccoons using generalized linear (mixed) models. From 245 raccoons, we identified a total of 3,917 ticks belonging to eight species of two genera: the most prominent species were Ixodes ovatus (52.9 %), followed by Haemaphysalis megaspinosa (14.4 %), Ixodes tanuki (10.6 %), and Ixodes persulcatus (9.5 %). Ixodes ovatus was also predominant among questing ticks and ticks infesting tanukis. Although I. tanuki was frequently collected from raccoons and tanukis, it was rarely collected in the field. The variables that significantly affected the infestation on raccoons differed by genus, species and developmental stage of the tick. For instance, the infestation of adult I. ovatus was significantly affected by four variables: night-time temperature during nine days before capturing the raccoon, the size of forest area around the capture site, sex of the raccoon, and sampling season. The first two variables were also responsible for the infestation on raccoons of almost all species and stages of ticks. Our study revealed that the number and composition of ticks infesting raccoons can be affected not only by landscape of their habitats but also by weather conditions in several days before capturing.

Background: Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is genetically categorized into three genotypes. A live-attenuated vaccine strain GPE−, currently used in Japan, belongs to genotype 1 and is genetically distinct from the field strains circulating in Japan, which belong to genotype 2. This study aimed to understand the antigenicity of recent field isolates in Japan and develop new vaccine candidates that antigenically match field strains. Methods: The serum samples of 20 pigs vaccinated with GPE− were subjected to a serum neutralizing test (SNT) using one of the field strains, CSFV/wb/Jpn-Mie/P96/2019 (Mie/2019). For the antigenic matching, vGPE−/HiBiT/Mie E2 was generated by replacing the viral glycoprotein E2, the main target of the neutralizing antibody, with that of Mie/2019. Additionally, vGPE−/HiBiT/Mie E2/PAPeV Erns was generated by further substituting glycoprotein Erns with that of pronghorn antelope pestivirus (PAPeV) since Erns is not important as a vaccine immunogen and can be replaced by that of other pestiviruses to provide an immunological marker. The efficacy of vGPE−/HiBiT/Mie E2/PAPeV Erns was further evaluated by the challenge experiments in pigs. Results: The SNT titers of serum sample against Mie/2019 were 6.1-fold lower than that against vGPE−. The generated recombinant viruses showed closer antigenicity to Mie/2019 than vGPE−. The challenge study confirmed that vGPE−/HiBiT/Mie E2/PAPeV Erns provided clinical and virological protection against a field CSFV equivalent to vGPE−. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that swapping the E2 encoding region with the prevalent field CSFVs is a promising strategy to achieve antigenic matching between the vaccine and field strains.

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is caused by the BVD virus (BVDV) and has been reported worldwide in cattle. To estimate BVDV circulation among cattle where few BVD cases were reported in southern Japan, 1910 serum samples collected from 35 cattle farms without a BVD outbreak were investigated to detect antibodies against BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 using an indicator virus with a cytopathogenic effect and the luciferase gene, respectively. Neutralizing antibodies against BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 were detected more frequently in 18 vaccinated farms than in 17 nonvaccinated farms. In the nonvaccinated farms, 9.6%, 1.8%, and 13.8% of the cattle were estimated to have a history of infection with BVDV-1, BVDV-2, and both, respectively. The median rate of within-herd anti-BVDV-1 seropositivity among cattle in the nonvaccinated farms was 22.0%; however, a high within-herd seropositivity (>50%) was confirmed in the two farms. The force of infection, basic reproduction number, and annual probability of BVDV-1 infection were estimated as 0.072 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.062–0.084), 0.36 (95% CI: 0.31–0.42), and 0.73% (95% CI: 0.61–0.87%), respectively, using the age-specific positive rate of anti-BVDV-1 antibodies. These parameters should be further applicable for developing epidemiological models which illustrate the BVDV dynamics in the field.
