Este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación cuyo objetivo principal fue establecer un panorama de la producción y características de las editoriales independientes mexicanas del siglo XXI que no hacen parte del catálogo Nautilo de la Biblioteca Nacional de México (BNM), con el fin de plantear estrategias de incorporación de las obras faltantes al acervo de dicha institución a través del depósito legal. Se estudiaron los registros de 112 editoriales mexicanas independientes y se determinó: 1. Que la producción del 69% del total de proyectos no hacen parte del acervo de la BNM, lo que indica que no cumplen con el depósito legal. 2. Que dentro de ese 69% que no está incluido en la BNM, el 51% de los proyectos no cuenta con registro ISBN en sus obras, lo cual hace más difícil poder identificar su producción para incentivar el cumplimiento del depósito legal. 3. Las características principales de los proyectos a partir de sus catálogos editoriales y páginas web, para poder identificar su producción. A partir del análisis de estos datos se concluye que hay un vacío bibliográfico significativo de la producción de editoriales independientes mexicanas contemporáneas en la BNM, especialmente de las que tienen prácticas más experimentales, y se enfatiza la importancia de trazar estrategias que incentiven el cumplimiento de su depósito legal, teniendo en cuenta las particulares características de este tipo de edición.

Blockchain technology has gained significant prominence in the business world. Its impact has been felt in many sectors, but its integration and interoperability remain complex. Many challenges remain, both for users and business consultants, as well as for IT engineers. One of the challenges identified by the research community is the need to provide mechanisms to specify, verify and validate the requirements and business rules that smart contracts must comply with before they can be deployed in a blockchain network. This paper describes a proposal, based on model-driven and useroriented engineering, that aims to obtain functional verification from smart contract specifications in a systematic way. This proposal has been validated in the SmartISBN project, an R+D+i project whose objectives included ensuring the software quality of smart contracts and, above all, improving the traceability of digital publishing (electronic books and journals) using blockchain technology. In this context, this proposal has facilitated the communication between functional experts (authors, publishers, booksellers, etc.) and IT engineers during the specification phase of the global SmartISBN solution and in particular of the smart contracts, as well as during the definition of the functional tests necessary for the validation of the project. Legal deposit is an essential legal obligation to facilitate the preservation of a country's cultural heritage, but it is also an ideal means of protecting the freedoms of expression and information by allowing citizens access to publications. In this work, we will focus on analysing, mainly from a legal point of view, the changes introduced in the Spanish legal deposit regulations by the legislative reform enacted in 2022. The aim of this reform was to adapt the Spanish legal deposit legislation to the current editorial and market reality, a reality that is evolving very rapidly, driven by the dizzying speed with which technological innovations are currently being produced. In this research, two distinct areas of number theory and its use in computer science are combined. In this article, an investigation was conducted on the implementation of solutions to linear congruence problems. Linear congruence is a concept implying that two integers a and b are congruent modulo m (denoted as ab (?mod = m)), if the difference between them is exactly proportional to m. The study is important in the field of number theory and computer science which brings many benefits and efficient solutions to various problems. Therefore, the study investigates the application of linear congruence through illustrative examples, to apply number theory in finding the ISBN number, in converting decimal numbers to binary, octal, and hexadecimal, and its application in encoding and decoding messages from the field of cryptography. This section of the paper can make it easier for mathematicians to apply problems involving linear congruences, especially for those who need basic expertise in number theory. The findings of the study show that the compatibility of the book ISBN format can be checked through linear congruence. Additionally, these findings demonstrate your understanding of how to convert decimal values to binary, octal, and hexadecimal using linear congruence in a fairly comprehensive manner. Additionally, because the idea of a linear congruence system is employed in the encoding and decoding of codes for network security and other purposes, the findings of this study may be helpful to researchers working in the field of cryptography. The transformations in science produced by the development of ICTs are conceptualized in the model of e-Science. Information on the researchers’ activities in digital form is collected in several systems outside the affiliated institutions. Manuscript submission systems, grant funding applications, data centers, citation indexes, other institutional or disciplinary repositories and personal web pages are all important sources of information. Persistent identifiers allow to discover and collect this information and provide the ability to compare, analyze and combine data with greater efficiency and accuracy. The article provides an overview of the most popular persistent identifiers used in e-Science and describes their role.

Artículo sobre la historia del International Standard Book Number (ISBN), desde que fue creado hasta su expansión por el mundo. Menciona el contexto sociocultural de su surgimiento, enfatizando cómo llegó a América Latina y el Caribe. El primer objetivo de este trabajo es conocer los pormenores de esa historia, y en segundo lugar repensar la utilidad del ISBN en contextos académicos y de investigación del libro. Tras revisar cuáles son los elementos que componen este código estandarizado, se explica cómo podría sacarse provecho de él en los campos de investigación bibliográfica y bibliológica. Finalmente, se reflexiona en torno a cuáles son las problemáticas generales que han impedido que el ISBN pueda consolidarse como una herramienta de trabajo indispensable para bibliotecarios, editores e investigadores.

En este trabajo de investigación se elabora una revisión contextual del libro de artista contemporáneo, del Número Internacional Normalizador de Libros (ISBN) y del Decreto por el que dispone la obligación de los editores y productores de materiales bibliográficos y documentales, de entregar ejemplares de sus obras a la Biblioteca Nacional y a la Biblioteca del Congreso de la Unión de 1991, vigente en México. La relación que existe entre estos tres temas se lleva a cabo de acuerdo con el método empírico-analítico, ya que se ha observado —durante más de 16 años de ejercicio profesional práctico en bibliotecas de arte— la creciente presencia del libro de artista en bibliotecas no vinculadas con museos de arte. Se hace, además, un análisis de lo que implica categorizar un libro como libro de artista y su conceptualización, al igual que la influencia e incorporación de las nuevas tecnologías de producción en este proceso creativo de los artistas. Esta reciente sinergia entre los tres temas descritos otorga grandes posibilidades y ventajas al libro de artista para trascender como patrimonio cultural, una vez que forma parte de las colecciones de una Biblioteca Nacional. En este sentido, los libros de artista inmediatamente serían parte de la bibliografía nacional, no sólo estarían en las colecciones de algunas bibliotecas o museos.

El uso de números en los documentos, independientemente de utilizarse como parte del contenido propiamente dicho de las obras —para expresar cantidades, fórmulas, medidas, posiciones, valores, etc.— tiene un variado conjunto de aplicaciones según propósitos claramente definidos. El presente texto tiene como finalidad hacer una breve descripción de la manera en que se emplean diversos códigos numéricos en los procesos de producción, control e identificación de impresos. Para especificar el tipo de datos a que nos referiremos, se incluye en primer lugar una propuesta de tipificación en razón del origen de los números. A continuación, se abordan los casos de números que van impresos en los libros y después, aquellos que se anotan por los poseedores de los mismos. En tercer lugar, se incluyen códigos numéricos que permiten identificar a los documentos en repertorios impresos o en catálogos bibliográficos en línea.

The development of the international standard ISO 2108 during the past 50 years is presented, as well as the detailed structure of the international identifier and its scope. The usage is described and explained, stressing its advantages and benefits. Particular importance is paid to the fact that it has to be the unique and persistant identifier of a monographic publication for any of its forms and manifestations, and some related international identifiers are discussed in this respect. The origin and history of the Slovenian National ISBN Agency are presented, its tasks and activities, including an analysis of the Slovenian Publishers' Directory database which proves to be a good source for further research in the field of publishing in Slovenia. With the occasion of the Sub-regional Seminar "Teaching Intellectual Property to the Youth", organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Romanian Copyright Office (ORDA), the State Office for Inventions and Trademarks (OSIM), the Ministry of National Education (MEN), the Romanian-American University and the Scientific Association of Intellectual Property Law (ASDPI), with the support of "Nicolae Titulescu" University of Bucharest - Doctoral School (UNT), the Romanian Revue of Intellectual Property Law (RRDPI) and the union of the Romanian Film and Audiovisual Producers - Patronage of Cinematography and Television Production Societies, I supported, as an ASDPI expert, the presentation "Scientific research stages for high school teachers". The Seminar took place in Bucharest, in the period 9-10 May 2017. At the seminar, have participated more than 30 high school teachers from all over Romania, in order to get more knowledge and to be trained about intellectual property. The intellectual property was introduced as an optional discipline in high schools according to the Minister of Education and Scientific Research Order no. 3.542/27.03.2015. The increasing availability of online catalogs and bibliographical databases allows not only for copy cataloging, but also for the retrieval of atomic information useful within the catalog. To this end, Dewey decimal numbers were imported from national and international sources by means of the unique identifier ISBN. Technical specifications have been developed to locate the records to be retrieved, to query external databases, to extract the Dewey decimal classification numbers and add them to the catalog. The exceptionally large amount of Dewey numbers added to the catalog has improved the semantic usability of the OPAC. The procedure established has also facilitated the collection of information on the use of the Dewey Decimal System in the various databases used and allowed to make certain comparisons between them. The tools employed can be used analogously for data-retrieval operations in the catalog, as an aid in the cataloging process, or to improve the OPAC in either a static or dynamic manner. Taking into account its virtually exclusive practical purpose, this work is characterized by practical rather than theoretical choices. However, the experience acquired opens up areas even in the field of academic research.

In 2016, the National Book Council, the ISBN agency for Malta, released its ISBN database online. A few months later, the ISBN database was enhanced with an open-data feature that enables users to download the search results in a single file with read and write access. The database includes all the ISBN data of Malta except for some records and data that were lost during the period before 2013 when paper data storage of ISBN records was the common practice. The implementation of an ISBN electronic database now ensures that no data go missing and facilitates the preservation of metadata. As added value, the open-data system provides access to all of the ISBN records as listed in the database, which means that virtually all of the ISBN data elements can be downloaded from the database. El alcoholismo es uno de los grandes problemas para la salud que se presentan en la población española. El objetivo de este estudio fue ver si en España se publicaban libros sobre alcohol y alcoholismo y analizar las características de los mismos; asimismo, se analizaron las características de la base de datos de la Agencia Española ISBN, que se utilizó en el estudio. Se recuperaron los libros que incluyeran en algún campo: alcohol*, alkohol*, etanol*, etili*, o beber*. Para cada libro se consideraron: autor, materia ISBN, año de publicación, idioma (de publicación y original) e institución editora. Se analizaron 196 libros. Se observó un crecimiento en número con los años. La mayoría se publicó entre 1985 y 1993 (71 %). El 79% de los libros fueron escritos por autores personales. El idioma de publicación más utilizado fue el castellano (95%). Veinte libros (10%) eran traducciones. Según la base de datos ISBN, los libros se clasificaron en 28 materias distintas. Las más frecuentes fueron: patología-enfermedades-clínica médica-terapéutica (n=58, 30%), y farmacología-toxicología-drogas (n=43, 22). Las editoriales publicaron el 40% de los libros, las universidades el 26% (47 -94%- eran tesis) y los organismos públicos el 19%. Se concluye que la base de datos de la Agencia Española ISBN puede ser un instrumento útil en la localización de libros españoles sobre alcoholismo. Sin embargo, hay una serie de limitaciones en el uso de esta base de datos que deben tenerse en cuenta siempre que se utilice para realizar un estudio de este tipo.

The use of numbers in the documents, whether used as part of their content - to express quantities, formulas, measurements, positions, values, etc. - has a diverse set of applications according to defined purposes. This paper aims to give a brief description of how various numerical codes in production processes, control and identification of forms are used. To specify the type of data to which we refer, first we included a proposal of a classification about the origin of the numbers. Followed by the numbers printed in books, and then address those numbers that are noted by the owners or holders of the books. Finally, the numeric code that serves to identify documents in printed sources or online library catalogs are included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Las tipologías documentales usadas en las agencias del ISBN poseen cierto grado de indefinición que afecta a las estadísticas de la producción del sector editorial español y argentino. Se estudian las definiciones de libro presentadas por la legislación de ambos países y la función del control bibliográfico nacional. Analiza las estadísticas de la Agencia Española y la Agencia Argentina del ISBN. Propone una nueva tipología que abarque las categorías de formatos y soportes en uso en el sector editorial digital.

Book publishers now have more products to keep track of than ever before: books, eBooks, apps, online products, and the list goes on. Traditionally publishers have used the ISBN to track products in the supply chain. But with as many as 24 ISBNs now associated with a bestselling title, the publishing industry looks to a new identifier, the International Standard Text Code (ISTC), to keep ISBNs in check. On December 7, 2011, the Book Industry Study Group released BISG Policy Statement POL-1101, Best Practices for Identifying Digital Products, capping an 18-month project by a working group of the BISG Identification Committee. This article chronicles how a diverse group of industry professionals, from every sector of the supply chain, came together to deal with an issue that had polarized the industry since 2005. Based on a presentation made by the author at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Book Industry Study Group, this article delves further into the history and the methodology behind the drafting of the Policy Statement. The Special Committee on Electronic Publication was re-established at the XVII International Botanical Congress (IBC) in Vienna in 2005, with the mandate to consider on the issues relating to the electronic publication of nomenclatural novelties and to report to the XVIII IBC in Melbourne in 2011. With the global push to inventory biodiversity and to develop information systems to disseminate data, issues surrounding speed of publication, copyright and licensing, and permanence and accessibility of information have surfaced. Electronic publication is central to these issues, and the insistence of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Code) on distribution of printed matter for effective publication is seen by many as a hindrance to progress. Against this backdrop, the Committee conducted extensive negotiations and discussions on a wide range of issues on electronic publication, which are here summarized in the Committee's report. The Committee unanimously supports the extension of effective publication to electronic publication, but in a well-regulated way that will establish the basis for long-term archiving and discovery. The Committee has put forward a set of eleven proposals (Special Committee on Electronic Publication, 2010) to amend the Code to permit electronic publications to be considered effectively published under specified conditions on or after 1 January 2013. It is proposed that electronic material will be effectively published only when distributed in Portable Document Format (PDF) in an online serial publication with an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). An additional proposal extends this to PDF with an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). Further proposals strengthen this by forbidding post-publication alteration and by discounting preliminary versions as not effectively published. The current method for establishing the date of effective publication is amended to account for electronic material. These changes to the Articles of the Code are supported by a set of Recommendations for best practice for electronic publication of nomenclatural novelties, covering aspects of archiving and immutability, dissemination of data, and clear designation of versions as preliminary or final. Forecasts indicate a growing demand for digital content around the world. Converting to digital content can open up countless new revenue possibilities. Adding alternate channels may be worth consideration, but what are the options and what does it take to utilize them effectively? This article explores the opportunities that potentially exist for publishers with content that may be digitized and distributed to global markets. A brief review of the current marketplace is also incorporated, including current players and trends. Finally, an analysis of some of the potential issues, challenges and pitfalls is presented in context of delving into a new international digital content distribution strategy. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a mature technology used across many industries. However, beyond satisfying industry mandates, many in the publishing industry have stepped back from pursuing the potential of RFID. Why? Publishing was first introduced to RFID in 2003 through retailer mandates which created a negative cloud around RFID. Many focused exclusively on the technology and the cost of compliance, rather than the business benefits. Since then, the primary focus has continued to be on the technology. For a publishing industry facing new sources of competition and serious supply-chain issues, the time has come to stop focusing on the technology and start thinking about the benefits. RFID is really all about lowering costs and achieving greater efficiencies. The potential for RFID to reduce warehouse and distribution costs, in-store theft and out-of-stock conditions is exciting, as are the larger opportunities to improve forecasting, customer experience and planning. RFID is new to the book industry and there is still a lot to learn. Understanding the technology is important. But, RFID is not just a technology. It is an enabler for reducing costs, improving profitability and enhancing competitiveness. It is essential that the industry go beyond the technology and start realizing these opportunities. The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) emerges as a need for book trade and circulation. In using it for bibliographic control, libraries regard it as a tool allowing them to know the editorial movement and compliance with the Law on Legal Deposit proportionately. This process has been developed in different ways in the Spanish America countries, though we have found coinciding points in the region. Croatia considers the book a priority cultural product. Today various forces, both positive and negative, affect publishing in Croatia. A survey of traditional publishing in Croatia based on statistical data collected by the author in the Croatian ISBN Agency over the past 8 years introduces the main topic. The author then reports on the results of a survey of 1,000 publishers, aimed at establishing which medium publishers used for their books between 1993 and the beginning of 1998, the period when book production passed from printed to digital form. The research results show that modern electronic book forms have been gradually developing in Croatia in parallel with traditional publishing. The number of publishers producing books in electronic format is not great. However, the fact that nearly a quarter of the publishers who returned the questionnaire do produce electronic books, shows that Croatian publishers accept new technologies as they appear in countries with a developed publishing industry, only in a much more modest scope. The author mentions electronic books published by as many as forty publishers, and gives a survey of online-bookstores in Croatia. Special attention is paid to book legislation in the country.
