The article traces the history of the lost counties of Ulster, Ireland. Information is provided on the partitioning of Ulster by the Ulster Unionist Council (UUC) in 1920 to maximize their political strength, founding of the Irish Free State in December 1922 after the Anglo-Irish War, accusation of betrayal of Unionists in the lost counties by northern unionist elite, mutual affinity between southern unionists and republican prisoner Kevin O'Higgins, and Dominion status of the Irish Free State.
