Background: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a major health problem among the Karen hill tribe in Thailand. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an integrated intervention program of drug therapy combined with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education on reinfection with IPIs among the Karen hill tribe in an endemic area of northern Thailand. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in two Karen villages, involving 691 residents, in Omkoi District, Chiang Mai Province; one village was designated as the intervention group and the other as the control group. Baseline information was collected regarding the infections and participants' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to prevention and control of IPIs. Detection of benzimidazole resistance linked to the beta-tubulin gene mutation in soil-transmitted helminths (STH) was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and DNA sequencing. Mass drug administration (MDA) with albendazole was applied to both groups. The intervention group received WASH education, whereas the control group did not. Follow-up assessments were conducted at 3 and 6 months. Results: Baseline data revealed a 36.0% (123/342) prevalence of IPIs in the intervention group and 36.8% (96/261) in the control group. The most common helminth and pathogenic protozoan were Trichuris trichiura and Giardia lamblia, respectively. No non-synonymous mutations in the beta-tubulin gene were found. Post-intervention at 3-month and 6-month follow-ups revealed that the prevalence of IPIs in the intervention group was significantly decreased to 23.6% (P = 0.002) and 23.1% (P = 0.002), and the prevalence of pathogenic IPIs was reduced from 9.4% to 3.9% (P = 0.013) and 2.4% (P = 0.002), respectively. In contrast, no significant changes in the prevalence of IPIs were observed in the control group. The intervention group showed significant improvements in KAP scores, which were significantly higher than those in the control group. Conclusions: MDA alone is not effective for controlling IPIs among the Karen people due to rapid reinfection related to behavioral factors and socioeconomic conditions. We demonstrated for the first time that integration of WASH education increased KAP scores and consequently significantly reduced IPI reinfection among the Karen hill tribe in northern Thailand. Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a major health concern in resource-limited countries of South/South-East Asian region. Despite posing a potential threat to maternal and fetal health, there is limited data available on the actual burden of IPI among pregnant women. Through this systemic review and meta-analysis, we sought to determine the pooled prevalence of IPI and species-specific prevalence among pregnant women in this region. Subgroup analysis was done by region, stool examination technique, and study settings. Among 220 retrieved studies, 21 studies from 8 countries across the region were found eligible and included in this study. The estimated overall pooled prevalence of IPIs among pregnant women was 43.15% (95% confidence interval: 30.66–56.10). The most prevalent IPI was Ascaris lumbricoides (25.14%) and predominant protozoa was Entamoeba histolytica /dispar (6.96%). In subgroup analysis, the estimated pooled prevalence of IPIs in Nepal, India, Thailand, and Thai–Burmese Border was 40.88%, 28.33%, 55.38%, and 23.78%, respectively. Studies using Kato-Katz technique for stool examination showed the highest estimated pooled IPI prevalence (62.70%). The prevalence of IPI was found to be lower in facility-based studies (38.12%) than that of studies done in the community (66.21%). Considering the high burden of IPI in pregnant women as estimated in our review and the already established impact of IPI infection on maternal health and fetal outcomes, we recommend implementation of the preventive chemotherapy during routine antenatal checkups. Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) pose a serious public health threat across the globe, particularly in children residing in poor and most deprived communities like Ethiopia. Many published articles were available separately, and a detailed nationwide review was essential to combine all the results to draw a conclusion and avoid any informational conflicts, ambiguities, or misunderstandings. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide pooled estimates for the individually available data on IPIs and its determinant factors among preschool-aged children (PSAC) in Ethiopia. Published and unpublished articles from various electronic databases were accessed using MeSH terms and keywords. I2 and sensitivity analysis tests were used to assess potential sources of heterogeneity across studies. Funnel plot, Begg's, and Egger's regression tests were used to check publication bias. A random-effects model with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to calculate the pooled estimate of IPI. In this meta-analysis, a total of 14,994 PSAC were included in the 32 eligible studies. The pooled national prevalence of IPIs among PSAC was 32.52% (95% CI: 26.24, 38.80). Of these, single and mixed infections contribute 31.08% and 1.44%, respectively. According to the subgroup analysis, the highest prevalence was observed in simple random studies (39.61%; 95% CI: 29.19, 50.03), the Tigray region (58.00%; 95% CI: 54.10, 61.90), studies conducted in >384 (39.47%; 95% CI: 27.73, 51.20) sample sizes, cross-sectional studies (32.76%), community-based studies (42.33%; 95% CI: 31.93, 52.74), and from 2005 to 2016 (34.53%; 95% CI: 20.13, 48.92) study periods. Intestinal parasites were significantly associated with eating raw fruits and vegetables (aOR = 3.21; 95%CI: 1.11–5.31). The high prevalence of STHs observed in this systematic review and meta-analysis underscores the need for appropriate control and prevention strategies suitable for PSAC in Ethiopia.

Background: Intestinal parasitic infections have been a worldwide public health issue. The most vulnerable population is children due to their immature immune systems and nutritional requirements. IPIs are associated with improper sanitation, no access to safe water and improper hygiene, economic uncertainty, and social marginalization. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of breastfeeding with IPIs among children up to two years of age at selected health facilities in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: The study was conducted among 160 children up to two years of age, out of which 80 were breastfed and 80 were nonbreastfed. The study was carried out in selected health facilities in Karachi, Pakistan, from October 2022 to January 2023. The study design was analytical cross-sectional, and the data was collected through a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions related to the demographics of the children and their mothers, feeding practices, hygiene practices, and the health status of the children. Results: The overall prevalence of IPIs among children up to two years of age was 36.9%, with Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia Lamblia being the most common parasites identified. Breastfeeding was significantly associated with a lower risk of IPIs (OR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.05-3.90). Other factors associated with IPIs included age 0 to 12 months (OR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.12-0.74), the habit of fingernails trimming (OR:0.35, 95% CI: 0.17-0.72), mother’s hand washing before preparing food (OR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.22-0.85), method of purifying drinking water (OR: 0.45,95% CI: 0.21-0.86) and history of diarrhea, abdominal pain, excessive crying, and perianal itching (OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.02-3.76), (OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.02-3.76), (OR: 2.88, 95% CI: 1.47-5.64) and (OR: 3.15, 95% CI: 1.50-6.60), respectively. Conclusion: Our study highlights the prevalence of IPIs among children up to two years of age in Karachi, Pakistan. Breastfeeding was found to be protective against IPIs, while other factors such as age, the habit of fingernail trimming, hand washing, water purification, and symptoms of infection were found to be associated with a higher risk of IPIs.

Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving school children from nursery to the 8th Grade in the South Canara district of Karnataka, India. Results: The total prevalence was found to be 15%, with protozoans being more common (63%) than helminths (33%). Cyst of Entamoeba histolytica/dispar was the most common protozoan and Ascaris was the most common helminth isolated. Rural residence, open defecation and barefoot walking were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with the prevalence. Conclusion: Along with mass deworming and elimination program being carried out by the government, results of this study would help in planning and implementing specific policies in the area.

Interactions between parasites and hosts are not fully understood, though the dynamic pattern of infection and reinfection in humans varies with different demographic variables and behavioral changes. A community-based non-equivalent control group post-test-only design, an aspect of quasi-experimental design (QED), was carried out between March 2019 and February 2020. For the extraction of data from respondents, structural questionnaires were filled. Their CD4 count and viral load from the database of the National Health Laboratory Services, Mthatha were recorded. The method applied for the identification of intestinal parasites was a direct examination of the stool and the use of concentration methods. The post-test analysis showed that the intervention sites that received THEdS (Treatment, Health education, and Sanitation) bundle had a cure proportion of 60% and a re-infection proportion of 40%. The post-test results on control sites (treatment-only group) showed that the cure proportion was 51.4% and the re-infection proportion was 48.6%. The viral load significantly reduced from 377 to 44 copies/mL with a significant increment in CD4 count from 244 to 573 (cells µL) and (p-value) = 0.002. The combination of THEdS is an effective measure to reduce infection and reinfection of intestinal parasites. The THEdS bundle is a sustainable control and prevention method for the control of helminthes and protozoan associated with unsanitary environment and poor personal hygiene among immune-compromised individuals like HIV/AIDS patients.

Infection with intestinal parasites is widespread worldwide, especially in developing countries. Intestinal parasites are a major cause of diarrhea in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised people, but cancer patients are more prone to infection. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center (NCHRC) in Nepal. One hundred individuals were selected with a convenience sampling strategy. The stool samples were examined by direct wet mount, sedimentation, flotation, and acid-fast methods to determine the prevalence and intensity of IPIs in this population. The overall prevalence of IPIs was 8% (4% protozoan and 4% helminths). Altogether, three species of intestinal parasites were detected. Cryptosporidium (4%) was predominant followed by Trichuris trichiura (2%) and Ancylostoma duodenale (2%). Multivariable regression analysis revealed that "not using soap for handwashing" was significantly associated with the prevalence of overall IPIs. None of the other evaluated risk factors indicated an association with IPIs infection. In this study, the IPIs were attributable to individual hygiene behaviors, but not to nutritional status or socio-demographic characteristics. Background: Intestinal parasitic infection (IPI) poses a serious public health threat across the globe, particularly in children in low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia. This study was to provide pooled estimates for the individually available data on IPI and its predictors among children under five in Ethiopia. Methods: Cochrane's Q, I2, sensitivity analysis, funnel plot, Begg's, and Egger's regression tests were used to check heterogeneity and publication bias. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled burden of IPI among children under five. Results: The pooled prevalence of IPI among children under five was 28.27% (95% CI = 20.52–36.03%). Of these, single and mixed infections contribute to 28.02% and 0.25%. Intestinal parasites were significantly associated with eating raw fruits and vegetables [AO = 3.21, 95% CI = 1.11, 5.31]. Introduction: Intestinal parasitic infections pose a substantial threat to public health and are a huge burden to the economic development of a developing country. We aimed to identify the spectrum of intestinal parasitic infections with an emphasis on demographic and clinical characteristics observed among immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Materials and Methods: This observational study was performed in the Parasitology section of the Department of Microbiology from January 2022 to July 2022. A total of 2628 stool samples were obtained from patients presenting with chief complaints of abdominal pain, distension, vomiting, and foul-smelling feces. All the clinical and diagnostic data of the patients enrolled in the above-mentioned period were extracted from the ward files, hospital electronic records, and laboratory registers. Result: A total of 2628 stool samples were sent to the Parasitology section of the Department of Microbiology. Out of the above-mentioned samples, 70 (70/2628, 2.66%) samples yielded gastrointestinal parasites on microscopic examination. The mean age of the patients included in our cohort study was 32.53 ± 16.21 years with a male predominance of 72.86% (51/70, 72.86%). The most common gastrointestinal parasite identified from stool samples was Giardia lamblia (61/70, 87.14%). All cases of opportunistic gastrointestinal infection caused by Cryptosporidium spp. (4/70, 5.71%) in our study cohort were found to infest the immunocompromised patients. Conclusion: This study determines the spectrum of intestinal parasitic infections among the immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals and guides physicians in starting appropriate anti-parasitic treatment along with the instillation of strict hand hygiene techniques. Background: Intestinal parasitic infections are still a considerable global public health problem. We aimed to determine the frequency of intestinal parasitic infections among people referring to the central laboratory of Meshkin Shahr City, Ardabil Province, Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, 460 fecal samples were collected randomly from persons referred to the central laboratory of Meshkin Shahr City, from January to June 2022. The samples were examined by direct wetmount, Trichrome and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining, formalin ethyl acetate sedimentation, and agar plate culture. Results: The frequency of intestinal parasites was 15.7% (72 out of 460 cases), with some people with numerous intestinal parasites. The frequency of protozoan infections (13.9%) was higher than the helminthic infections (2.6%). Blastocystis spp. (8.1%) was the most prevalent detected intestinal protozoan. Entamoeba coli (5.7%), Dicrocoelium dendriticum (2.2%), Giardia lamblia (1.5%), Fasciola spp. (0.2%), and Hymenolepis nana (0.2%) were other detected parasites. Conclusion: In-spite of betterment of the health condition in Iran and reduction of parasitic infection, intestinal parasitic infections are still a considerable public health issue in some parts of Iran. Statistical analysis was carried out to analyze age-related trends in relation to the prevalence of commonly detected intestinal parasites. Results: Intestinal parasites were identified in 10 of the 253 students (3.9%), with the highest incidence observed in the age group of 7-10 years (1.9%). The most prevalent parasite identified was the cysts of Giardia lamblia, with a prevalence of 7.54%, followed by Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm, each having a prevalence of 5.66%. Of the 253 students, 92.2% practiced handwashing with soap after defecation, while 7.8% did not use soap. The handwashing practices did not significantly vary across different age groups. Clinically, pallor was observed in 64.2% of the individuals. Conclusion: Giardiasis was the most common parasitic infection, followed by soil-transmitted helminths such as Ascariasis and hookworm. Background Global studies show intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) have been introduced and spread with refugee inflows from low to high socio-economic countries. However, there is relatively limited information on the prevalence of infections among the community. Methods A 2-year cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors for infections among urban refugees in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. A total of 418 faecal samples were collected and examined by microscopy. Results Faecal screening revealed moderate levels (32.3%) of infections in the community. Three nematode (Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm) and three protozoan species (Entamoeba, Giardia and Cryptosporidium) were recorded, with the highest prevalence being A. lumbricoides (20.6%) followed by T. trichiura (10.3%), while other infections were <5%. Statistical analysis found that young males with less education were more likely to be infected with helminths. Additionally, living near waste disposal sites, the presence of stray animals, eating with bare hands, bare footedness, poor handwashing practices and no anthelmintic treatment constituted significant risk factors for helminth infections. Protozoan infections were linked to drinking tap water or from water dispensers and poor handwashing practices. Conclusions These findings emphasize the importance of health education in addition to introduction of biannual anthelmintic treatment to promote community health and well-being. Background: Intestinal parasitic infections in humans are considered a significant global issue, particularly in rural areas. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasite infections and their associated factors in rural areas in Duhok province-Kurdistan Region-Iraq. Methods: A total of 620 stool samples were collected from individuals of various ages residing in rural villages within districts of Duhok province and were subjected to microscopic examination techniques. Results: Among the participants, 62.26% were found to be infected with at least one or two species of intestinal parasites. The prevalence of intestinal parasites was higher in males (68.65%) compared to females (31.35%). The highest prevalence rate (34.46%) was observed in the age group between 6 and 12 years. The infection were three protozoa: Entamoeba histolytica (73.83%), Giardia lamblia (16.84%), and Blastocystis hominis (8.81%). only one helminth was detected: Taenia spp. (0.52%). Protozoan infection was higher than helminths infections (99.48% and 0.52%, respectively). Abdominal pain and diarrhea were reported with high rates (33.16% and 32.12%, respectively). Participants who consumed water from wells exhibited the highest rate of intestinal parasitic infections (62.44%). Those who did not wash their hands before meals (70.47%), consumed raw or unwashed vegetables and fruits (61.66%), and had contact with animals (80.57%) showed significantly higher prevalence rates of intestinal parasitic infections (P < 0.05). INTRODUCTION - Parasitic infections are considered amajor health problem in rural areas of developing countries like India. Awareness regarding soil transmitted helminthic infections still outstrips the protozoan infections resulting in their neglect and under reporting. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES -- To study the six-year prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections in middle Assam from the records of patients attending Jorhat Medical College and Hospital which is a tertiary care centre catering to the entire middle Assam. METHODS -- A retrospective cross-sectional study was done by collecting data from records of intestinal protozoan isolates from January 2017 to December 2022. Data was analysed by using EpiInfo and association between different variables was calculated by Chi square test using p value < 0.05 as significant. RESULTS -- From a total of 1579 stool samples received over 6 years, 249 (15.77%) were positive for intestinal parasites out of which 123 (49.39%) were protozoan infections. Different parasites were reported with Entamoeba histolytica/dispar being the predominant one (87.80%), followed by Giardia lamblia (9.76%) and 3 cases (2.44%) of co-infection with soil transmitted helminths. Objectives: The objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence and relationship between intestinal parasite infections (IPIs) and the severity of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: One hundred and forty-two adult patients (18 years of age) with established CKD were compared to 30 controls in a case–control descriptive observational study. The primary outcome measures were the prevalence of IPIs in CKD patients and healthy controls. The secondary outcome measures were the association of IPIs with the severity of kidney disease. Results: Twenty one (14.8%) participants in the study group and 7 (23.3%) in the control group had IPIs (P = 0.278). Among the organisms causing IPI, hookworm and Entamoeba histolytica were the most common as seen in 23.8% of cases and 19.1% of cases, respectively. In different stages of CKD, the prevalence of IPI showed an increase with the increase in the grading (r = 0.2547, P = 0.036). However, the type of IPIs were similar in all three grades. Conclusion: IPIs are common among CKD patients and healthy populations in developing countries. The increasing severity of CKD increases the occurrence of IPI owing to increased uraemia and decreased immunity. Monitoring of such cases may help in improving the outcomes of such patients.

In developing countries due to lack of sanitary practices, poor socioeconomic conditions and huge population burden, intestinal parasitic infections continue to be a major public health problem. The present study was done to determine the prevalence of Intestinal parasitic infections (IPI) among patients attending our tertiary care rural hospital. The study was conducted for a duration of 3 years at R L Jalappa Hospital and Research Centre, Kolar. Retrospective data of samples sent for stool microscopy were collected from laboratory records and were analyzed. During the study period, 62 out of 892 patients were screened positive for intestinal parasitic infections. The most common parasite observed was Entamoeba histolytica (5.3%) followed by Hookworm (1.2%), Ascaris lumbricoides (0.4%), Strongyloides stercoralis (0.1%), and Taenia species (0.1%). Findings of our study show that intestinal parasitic infections continue to be a burden, hence regular screening is essential to know the common parasites causing infections. Improved sanitation, safe drinking water practices, and health education are essential for prevention.

Among the organisms causing IPI, hookworm and Entamoeba histolytica were the most common as seen in 23.8% of cases and 19.1% of cases, respectively. In different stages of CKD, the prevalence of IPI showed an increase with the increase in the grading (r = 0.2547, P = 0.036). However, the type of IPIs were similar in all three grades. Conclusion: IPIs are common among CKD patients and healthy populations in developing countries. The increasing severity of CKD increases the occurrence of IPI owing to increased uraemia and decreased immunity. Monitoring of such cases may help in improving the outcomes of such patients. Introduction: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a major medical and public health problem, especially in developing countries. This study aimed at comparing the prevalence and types of IPI during pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemics, and with data reported in Lebanon a decade ago. Methodology: Stool specimen results from a total of 4,451 and 4,158 patients were examined using the concentration method during the precovid (2017-2018) and post-covid (2020-2021) pandemic periods, respectively. Demographic information related to patient's age and gender was recorded. Results: The overall positive detected parasites among the total tested in these two periods were 589 (13.2%) and 310 (7.5%), respectively. The protozoa accounted for most parasites (e.g., Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba coli (E. coli), Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia). Only B. hominis and E. coli showed significant differences; B. hominis was more prevalent in the post-covid period (33.5%) whereas E. coli in the pre-covid phase (44.5%). Among gender, E. histolytica was higher in males during the post-covid period (13.3% vs. 6.3%). Regarding age, adults (between 26 and 55 years) had the highest prevalence, with a noticeable decrease among the elderly in the post-covid time. Compared to the previous decade, the prevalence of B. hominis and E. coli remained higher, and that of E. histolytica and G. lamblia was almost the same. Conclusions: These findings indicate an overall reduction in the prevalence of IPI during the post-covid period, though IPIs persistence remains high. This highlights the need for enhancing public health awareness efforts to improve hygiene and sanitation to reduce parasitic prevalence in Lebanon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, parasitic infections are one of the important health problems in the world, especially in developing countries. This study aims to investigate intestinal parasites with an emphasis on molecular identification through the analysis of mitochondrial COX1 and ITS2 gene sequences of Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) and Trichostrongylus spp. in north of Iran. Five hundred forty stool samples were collected from medical diagnostic laboratories affiliated with Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences in Sari city, north of Iran. First, all the samples were examined using direct smear, formalin-ether sedimentation, and trichrome staining technique. Suspected samples of Strongyloides larvae were cultured in agar plate. Then, DNA was extracted from samples containing Trichostrongylus spp. eggs and Strongyloides larvae. To amplify DNA, PCR was performed and the samples with a sharp band in electrophoresis were sequenced by Sanger method. Overall, the prevalence of parasitic infections in the study population was 5.4%. The highest and the lowest level of infection was observed with Trichostrongylus spp. and S. stercoralis at 3% and 0.2%, respectively. No traces of live Strongyloides larvae were seen in the culture medium of the agar plate. The six isolates obtained from the amplification of the ITS2 gene of Trichostrongylus spp. were sequenced, all of which were Trichostrongylus colubriformis. The sequencing results of COX1 gene indicated S. stercoralis. In the present study, the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in north of Iran has relatively decreased that its main reason can be due to the coronavirus epidemic and compliance with health principles. However, the prevalence of Trichostrongylus parasite was relatively high that it requires special attention to apply appropriate control and treatment strategies in this field.

Fecal specimens were examined using saline and iodine wet mount and formal-ether concentration techniques. Socio-demographic data were collected using pre-designed, structured questionnaires. The results were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 25 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).Results: Out of 600 participants, the overall prevalence of IPIs was 66.3% (398/600). The prevalence rate of protozoan infections (56.3%, 338/600) was largely higher than helminthic infections (10%, 60/600). The most common intestinal parasite was E. histolytica/dispar (28.5%, 171/600). S. mansoni infection showed higher infection rate in males (5.3%) than in females (0.4%), with statistically significant difference (P = 0.001). Univariate analysis showed that the age was only significantly associated with protozoan infections, with statistically significant differences (P = 0.002). Regarding to clinical symptoms, the presence of IPIs was significantly associated with diarrhea, dysentery, and abdominal pain.Conclusion: The present study revealed that there was a relatively high prevalence of IPIs, especially protozoan parasites, in schoolchildren of the study area, with E. histolytica/dispar being the most prevalent parasite. The results showed that age was only significantly associated with IPIs. According to the results of this study, IPIs are still among the main public health problems in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the burden of soil transmitted helminths and Schistosoma mansoni among Ambesame primary school children, North-West Ethiopia. Method A cross sectional study was carried out at Ambasame primary school children from March to May, 2019. Study participants were selected using systematic random sampling technique. Socio-demographic characteristics and other factors were collected using structured questionnaire. Moreover, stool samples were examined microscopically using wet mount and formol ether concentration techniques. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Logistic regression analysis was done to investigate the association between dependent and independent variables. P-value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Result The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 117(31.2%). The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthes and S.mansoni was 110 (29.3%) using formol ether concentration technique. The most predominant parasite was S. mansoni (10.7%), followed by hookworm (5.6%). Intestinal parasitic infections (IPI) cause morbidity among HIV-infected individuals. Poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) affects treatment outcomes, especially in low-middle-income countries. The study evaluated the prevalence of IPI among HIV patients in relation to ART adherence between May and November 2017. Ethical approval and consent were obtained from the ethical review committee of the Benue State Ministry of Health and patients respectively. Patients’ clinical records were reviewed, and ART adherence status was obtained from the adherence assessment cards. Participants were given two labelled sterile containers for stool samples. Direct wet mount of samples was prepared in normal saline to identify helminths ova and larvae. Samples were further processed using parasite concentrators. Slides were stained with Lugol’s iodine, modified Ziehl-Neelsen acid-fast and Giemsa and subsequently examined under a light microscope using x10 and x40 objectives. Data were analysed using the chi-square test and SPSS version 22. Of the 757 patients, females constituted 57.7% (n=437). Good adherence rate (>95%) was 61.9% (n=469). More females (n=301, 64.2%) than males (n=168, 35.8%) had good adherence status. IPI rate among ART patients was 16.4% (n=124). Entamoeba histolytica (n=5, 1.0%), Giardia lamblia (n=3, 0.6%) and Taenia sp. (n=8, 1.7%) were IPI seen among good adherence patients, and as single infections without diarrhoea. IPI was significant (p<0.05) among poor adherence patients (37.5%, n=108) compared to good adherence patients (3.4%, n=16). IPI were significant among females; 1.9% (n=9) in the good adherence group and 19.8% (n=57) in the poor adherence group. Cryptosporidium parvum (n=20, 6.9%), E. histolytica (n=15, 5.2%), E. coli (n=11, 3.8%), G. lamblia (n=10, 3.5%) and Taenia sp. (n=10, 3.5%) accounts for significant rates of infections among patients with poor adherence, with multiple infections and associated diarrhoea seen in 10 (3.5%) of them. Routine monitoring of HIV/AIDS patients for IPI by healthcare providers is necessary. Coinfected patients with poor ART adherence should be routinely screened for IPI and promptly treated. In developing countries due to lack of sanitary practices, poor socioeconomic conditions and huge population burden, intestinal parasitic infections continue to be a major public health problem. the present study was done to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (iPi) among patients attending our tertiary care rural hospital. the study was conducted for a duration of 3 years at R l Jalappa Hospital and Research Centre, Kolar. Retrospective data of samples sent for stool microscopy were collected from laboratory records and were analyzed. During the study period, 62 out of 892 patients were screened positive for intestinal parasitic infections. the most common parasite observed was Entamoeba histolytica (5.3%) followed by Hookworm (1.2%), Ascaris lumbricoides (0.4%), Strongyloides stercoralis (0.1%), and Taenia species (0.1%). Findings of our study show that intestinal parasitic infections continue to be a burden, hence regular screening is essential to know the common parasites causing infections. improved sanitation, safe drinking water practices, and health education are essential for prevention. Interactions between parasites and hosts are not fully understood, though the dynamic pattern of infection and reinfection in humans varies with different demographic variables and behavioral changes. A community-based non-equivalent control group post-test-only design, an aspect of quasi-experimental design (QED), was carried out between March 2019 and February 2020. For the extraction of data from respondents, structural questionnaires were filled. Their CD4 count and viral load from the database of the National Health Laboratory Services, Mthatha were recorded. The method applied for the identification of intestinal parasites was a direct examination of the stool and the use of concentration methods. The post-test analysis showed that the intervention sites that received THEdS (Treatment, Health education, and Sanitation) bundle had a cure proportion of 60% and a re-infection proportion of 40%. The post-test results on control sites (treatment-only group) showed that the cure proportion was 51.4% and the re-infection proportion was 48.6%. The viral load significantly reduced from 377 to 44 copies/mL with a significant increment in CD4 count from 244 to 573 (cells µL) and ( p -value) = 0.002. The combination of THEdS is an effective measure to reduce infection and reinfection of intestinal parasites. The THEdS bundle is a sustainable control and prevention method for the control of helminthes and protozoan associated with unsanitary environment and poor personal hygiene among immune-compromised individuals like HIV/AIDS patients.

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are usually housed in camps and shanties with most creating ideal environments that enhance transmission of diseases and increase the risk of being infected with intestinal parasitic infections through ingestion of contaminated food and/or water. This research investigates the preponderance of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) among schoolchildren in IDP camp in Benin City. fecal samples were collected from 249 schoolchildren (134 males, 115 females) between ages 6–15years randomly sampled, processed using sedimentation method and viewed microscopically. Structured questionnaires were administered to obtain their demographic characteristics. Eight species of intestinal parasites (Entamoeba coli, E. histolytica, Ascaris lumbricoides, Cystoisospora belli, Giardia duodenalis, Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercoralis and hookworms) were identified with an overall prevalence of 89.6% (223 of 249 children). Entamoeba histolytica 160 (64.3%), G. duodenalis 142 (57.0%), E. coli 103 (41.4%), S. stercoralis 85 (34.1%) and A. lumbricoides 79 (31.7%) were the most predominant parasites. Entamoeba histolytica was most prevalent in the different age groups- 16 (76.2%) 6–10years and 136 (69.4%) 11–15years (p>0.05), and in both genders; 82 (61.2%) in males and 78 (67.8%) in females followed by G. duodenalis 79 (59.0%) in males and 63 (54.8%) in females (p>0.05). The survey revealed that 111 (82.8%) males and 112 (97.4%) females were positive for one parasite or the other (p = 0.42). Infection rates documented in this study show the degree of parasitic infections among the children in the camp. This calls for improvement in health education, personal and environmental sanitation, food handling processes and drinkable water sources in the camp to effectively control the prevalence of IPIs.

Stool smears were made directly from the specimen and after concentration and stained by kinyoun's stain. Subsequently, the association of undernutrition was assessed with intestinal IPI using the Chi-square test. Results: The overall prevalence of Grade I, II, III, and IV malnutrition was 52%, 31.7%, 12.2%, and 4.1% while stunting and wasting IPIs were present in 60.2% and 36.6%, respectively. IPIs were present in 47.2%, and 11.4% showed polyparasitism. Soil-transmitted helminths were found to be the commonest (Ascaris lumbricoides: 21.1%; Trichuris trichiura: 13.0%; and hookworms: 8.1%) followed by the intestinal protozoa (Enterobius vermicularis: 7.3, Giardia lamblia: 6.5, and Cryptosporidium spp.: 2.4%). Increasing age upto 5 years, improper excreta disposal, low level of maternal education, and a higher number of childrenin the family were predictors of IPIs. The prevalence of IPI was significantly associated with Grade II and III undernutrition, stunting, and wasting. Individually, Ascaris and hookworms contributed significantly to stunting and cryptosporidium spp. to wasting. Conclusion: Prevalence of IPI in malnourished under-five children is high. Joint nutritional interventional strategies, early diagnosis/treatment of under-five children, and increased awareness among masses are imperative to break the vicious cycle of malnutrition and parasitic diseases. The present work evaluated the surveillance of the drinking water quality information system database and correlated the findings of the microbiological analysis with the distribution of intestinal protozoa from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. From the database, we obtained 1,654 georeferenced monitoring stations that were used in the analysis. The results indicate that the minimum number of samples collected per parameter (free residual chlorine, turbidity, counts of total and fecal coliforms (Escherichia coli)) was not fulfilled, the collection of samples throughout the year was irregular and the representability of sampling points considered strategic was low (48% of municipalities). Besides, municipalities with a high prevalence for intestinal parasite protozoa were also the ones that had the highest counts for coliforms and the reverse can also be observed, indicating a transmission through contaminated drinking water. Despite the increased participation of municipalities in water surveillance actions during the studied period, it is necessary to implement managerial measures to improve the system, aiming to correct flaws and inconsistencies in the application of the water quality monitoring protocol. Abstract Background Globally, urogenital and intestinal parasitosis remain significant health challenges. They are associated with rising morbidity, death, and many harmful outcomes. A little is known concerning parasitosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our study planned to investigate the urogenital and intestinal parasitic infections among type 2 diabetes patients compare to non-diabetic (Control) individuals and examine the intensity of helminthiasis in both groups. Methods At Kosti Teaching Hospital (Sudan), 300 Urine and 300 stool samples have collected from 150 type 2 diabetes and 150 control individuals, along with the socio-demographic data using a structured questionnaire. The parasitic infections were examined by direct sedimentation technique for urine specimens. Whereas, for fecal samples, simple-direct saline, formal-ether concentration, Kato-Katz, and modified Ziehl–Neelsen techniques were used. Results Out of 150 type 2 diabetes patients studied, 31 (20.6%) and 14 (9.3%) had intestinal parasitosis and urogenital schistosomiasis, respectively. Whereas, 16 (10.6%) and 8 (5.3%) of the control group were infected, respectively. Compared to the control group, the odds of testing positive for either urogenital schistosomiasis (AOR: 2.548, 95% CI: 0.836–7.761, P = 0.100) or intestinal parasitic diseases (AOR: 2.099, 95% CI: 0.973–4.531, P = 0.059) were greater in diabetic individuals. Likewise, the intensities of helminthiasis were much higher in the diabetic patients and positively correlated with the duration of illness. The rate of urogenital schistosomiasis was also significantly different among the disease duration subcategories. Conclusions Our study has highlighted the relationship of type 2 diabetes with urogenital and intestinal parasitic infections and enhanced our knowledge about the frequency of particular urogenital and intestinal parasites as well as the intensity of helminths infection in type 2 diabetes compared to non-diabetic individuals, which are important for further studies.

Background Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are regarded as one of the main public health problems and socio-economic issues adversely affecting the health of millions of people worldwide. Our study aimed to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practices of local urban schoolchildren in Taiz City towards intestinal parasitic infections. Methods and material This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Taiz, Yemen from March to May 2019. A total of 385 schoolchildren were selected using a random sampling technique from 7 primary schools. Wet-mount microscopic examination, formol-ether concentration techniques, and Lugols' iodine were employed in parasite detection and cyst identification. Results Of the 385 schoolchildren examined for IPIs, 107 (27.8%) were positive for the presence of enteric parasites, some having multiple infections. The prevalence was slightly higher in males 46 (28.6%) than in females 61 (27.2%) but have no statistical difference (P = 0.77). Entamoeba histolytica/dispar was the most common infection with 16.4% of cases. A substantial percentage (40.5%) of the respondents displayed poor knowledge. The respondents also revealed inappropriate attitudes and practices that contribute to the prevalence of IPIs in the study. Conclusions The study revealed the prevalence of intestinal parasites among the schoolchildren in Taiz, Yemen, suggesting that IPIs remain a major public health problem. Entamoeba histolytica/dispar was the most prevalent intestinal parasites identified among the schoolchildren. Age, poor knowledge of the mode of transmission, prevention, and acquisition of IPIs, and poor habitual hygiene practices increase the risk of acquiring intestinal infections.

Abstract Background Providing universal access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in remote Nepal remains challenging. We investigated WASH conditions and their association with children’s nutritional status, intestinal parasitic infections and diarrhoea. Methods Data was collected through a cross-sectional survey of 1427 households, including questionnaires, observations, stool analysis, anthropometry, water quality measurements, and assessment of clinical signs of nutritional deficiencies. Results We found 55.5% of children were undernourished, 63.9% had clinical signs of nutritional deficiencies, 51.1% had intestinal parasitic infections and 52.2% had diarrhoea. Multivariate mixed logistic regression analysis revealed a statistically significant negative association between undernutrition and socio-economic level, with adjusted odds ratios (AOR) of 0.70 (95%-CI = 0.43–1.11) and 0.43 (95%-CI = 0.25–0.75) for high and intermediate levels compared to the lowest level. Undernutrition was negatively associated with regular deworming of children (AOR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.20–0.94), food supplements (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.38–0.84), household’s own food production (AOR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.46–0.97) and personal hygiene (AOR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.51–1.35). Nutritional deficiency was negatively associated with handwashing after cleaning a baby’s bottom (AOR = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.40–0.92) and cleanliness of caregiver’s hands (AOR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.41–0.89) and positively associated with keeping animals inside the house overnight (AOR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.17–2.51) and the presence of total coliforms in the drinking water source (AOR = 10.44, 95% CI = 1.61–67.4). Diarrhoea was positively associated with intermittent water supply (AOR = 2.72, 95% CI = 1.18–6.31) and the presence of a mud floor (AOR = 2.29, 95% CI = 1.20–4.37) and negatively associated with cleanliness of the toilet (AOR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.47–0.98), and the cleanliness of children’s hands (AOR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.40–0.96). Conclusions Our study found, more than half of the survey children were in a critical health condition. Results suggest that child health improvements are dependent on multiple public health improvements, including providing better nutrition, promoting adequate hygiene behaviour, such as handwashing, keeping the latrines clean, keeping the household environment free from animal faeces and assuring a reliable supply of safe water.

This study assessed the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections, anaemia and associated factors among pre-school children in rural areas of the Tigray region, northern Ethiopia. Methods A community based cross-sectional study was conducted among 610 pre-school children in rural communities of Northern Ethiopia from June 2017 to August 2017. Stool specimens were examined for the presence of trophozoites, cysts, oocysts, and ova using direct, formal-ethyl acetate concentration, Kato–Katz, and Ziehl-Neelsen techniques. Haemoglobin was measured using a HemoCue spectrometer. Results Among the 610 participating pre-school children in the study, the prevalence of IPIs and anaemia were 58% (95% conference interval (CI): 54.1–61.9%) and 21.6% (95% CI: 18.5–25.1%), respectively. Single, double, and triple parasitic infections were seen in 249 (41, 95% CI: 37–45%), 83 (14, 95% CI: 11–17%), and 22 (3.6, 95% CI: 2.4–5.4%) children, respectively. Of the seven intestinal parasitic organisms recorded from the participants, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar was the most prevalent 220 (36.1%) followed by Giardia lamblia 128 (20.1%), and Hymenolepis nana 102 (16.7%). Mixed infections were common among G. lamblia, E. histolytica/dispar and Cryptosporidium spp. oocyst. Intestinal parasitic infection prevalence increased from 47% in children aged 6–11 months to 66% in those aged 48–59 months; the prevalence ratio (PR) associated with a one-year increase in age was 1.08 (95% CI: 1.02–1.14, p = 0.009). Age-adjusted prevalence was higher in children who had been dewormed (PR = 1.2; 95% CI: 1.00–1.4, p = 0.045), and lower in households having two or more children aged under five (PR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.61–0.95, p = 0.015). Anaemia rose from 28% in children aged 6–11 months to 43% in those aged 12–23 months, then fell continuously with age, reaching 7% in those aged 48–59 months. Age adjusted, anaemia was more prevalent in households using proper disposal of solid waste (PR = 1.5, 95% CI: 0.1–2.10, p = 0.009) while eating raw meat (PR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.45–0.54, p = 0.000), any maternal education (PR = 0.64 95% CI: 0.52–0.79, p = 0.000), and household water treatment (PR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.56–1.0, p = 0.044) were associated with lower prevalence of anaemia. Conclusions More than half of the children were infected with intestinal parasites, while anaemia prevalence was concentrated in the 12–23 month age group. This study has identified a number of potentially modifiable risk factors to address the significant prevalence of IPIs and anaemia in these children. Improvements in sanitation, clean water, hand hygiene, maternal education could address both short and long-term consequences of these conditions in this vulnerable population.

Abstract Background It has been suggested that specific interventions delivered through the education sector in low- and middle-income countries might improve children’s health and wellbeing. This cluster-randomised controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effects of a school garden programme and complementary nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions on children’s health and nutritional status in two districts of Nepal. Methods The trial included 682 children aged 8–17 years from 12 schools. The schools were randomly allocated to one of three interventions: (a) school garden programme (SG; 4 schools, n = 172 children); (b) school garden programme with complementary WASH, health and nutrition interventions (SG+; 4 schools, n = 197 children); and (c) no specific intervention (control; 4 schools, n = 313 children). The same field and laboratory procedures were employed at the baseline (March 2015) and end-line (June 2016) surveys. Questionnaires were administered to evaluate WASH conditions at schools and households. Water quality was assessed using a Delagua kit. Dietary intake was determined using food frequency and 24-h recall questionnaire. Haemoglobin levels were measured using HemoCue digital device and used as a proxy for anaemia. Stool samples were subjected to a suite of copro-microscopic diagnostic methods for detection of intestinal protozoa and helminths. The changes in key indicators between the baseline and end-line surveys were analysed by mixed logistic and linear regression models. Objectives: Children living in conflict zones plagued with adverse climatic conditions often suffer from acute malnutrition. Being coinfected with intestinal parasites could worsen the prognosis if adequate interventions are not promptly instituted. We determined the pattern of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) in children with acute malnutrition in the Bay and Banadir regions of Somalia., Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from August to October 2023 in 222 children with acute malnutrition aged 6-59 months, using a structured questionnaire and stool examination by a trained laboratorian. The prevalence of IPI was estimated and the pattern of IPI was explored. The relationship between the presence of IPI and demographic characteristics was examined with multiple logistic regression at a 95% level of confidence., Results: The mean age was 20.4 ± 12.3 months, 125 (56.3%) were females, and 41.9% were internally displaced. The prevalence of IPI was 82.9% (95% confidence interval: 77.4-87.3), Of the infected, 73.9% (136 of 184) had single parasitic infection and 23.4% (43 of 184) had double parasitic infections. Ascaris lumbricoides (46.6%), Giardia lamblia (22.1%), and Entamoeba histolytica (17.6%) were the most common parasites identified. The age of 13-36 months (adjusted odds ratio: 1.13, P = 0.02) and eating once a day (adjusted odds ratio: 1.13, P = 0.06) were associated with being infected with intestinal parasites., Conclusions: The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection was high in children with malnutrition in the Bay and Banadir regions. Deworming should be extended to all children with malnutrition. Background: Foodborne illnesses caused by intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are among the major health problems especially in developing countries. Food handlers play an important role in transmission of IPI during manufacturing, processing, handling, and serving of foodstuff. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of IPIs among food handlers in Greater Cairo, Egypt and their associated risk factors. Methodology: A cross sectional study was designed whereby 250 food handlers attending four provision health offices from different governorates of Greater Cairo were examined. The demographic data, job title and position, health certification as well as risk factors that might increase the transmission of IPIs were collected in a pre-designed questionnaire. Stool samples were collected from all participants and examined by direct wet/iodine mounts, formol diethyl acetate and modified Ziehl_Neelsen staining techniques. Results: 65 food handlers (26%) were found to have IPIs. The commonest parasites detected were Entamoeba histolytica (24.6%), Entamoeba coli (20%), Blastocystis hominis (16.9%), Giardia intestinalis (12.3%), followed by Enterobius vermicularis (10.8 %), Ascaris lumbricoides (7.7 %) and Schistosoma mansoni (3.1%). Higher, statistically significant (P<0.001), prevalence of IPIs was found among food handlers from rural areas, having low educational levels, not having previous health certificates and among those working in popular restaurants and those having poor personal hand hygienic measures. While no differences in prevalence of IPIs was found regarding age, sex, and work experience duration. Conclusion: It was concluded that implementation of governmental policies ensuring routine medical checkup and continuous professional training and education of food handlers are essential for prevention of IPIs among food handlers. Background: Effective and efficient use of technological advances will ease public health interventions and also help in reaching a larger population. Geographic Information System (GIS) and Foldscope are two such technologies, which have promising utilities in public health. Identifying intestinal parasitic infections early through feasible technologies will help in their effective management. With this objective, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among school children in southern districts of Karnataka, India. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 10 urban, 10 rural, and 5 tribal schools of southern districts of Karnataka. A total of 1052 children studying in these schools were selected. Stool samples were collected and examined under Foldscope for parasitic infestation. The schools where children with worm infestations present were plotted in the GIS map. Findings: Among 1052 children included in this study, 139 (13.2%) were found to have an intestinal parasitic infestation. Among these children, 24.6% were in the age group of 5–9 years, 12.2% were males, and 14.4% were females. Urban students had higher odds (2.765) of parasitic infections compared to rural students. Mean age, height, and weight were significantly lesser among subjects with a worm infestation. Interpretation: Utility of Foldscope and GIS was found to be feasible and effective in the detection and mapping of parasitic infestations. The prevalence of parasitic infestation was found to be high among urban school children. Age, weight, height, and urban residence were found to be the major predictors of outcome.

Abstract Objective In marginalized setting, under-nutrition and illnesses due to infectious agents create a vicious circle. In our previous study, we reported that easy-to-do hand hygiene interventions were effective in preventing intestinal parasite infections (IPIs) and reduce the rate of anaemia among school-aged children. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of associations between IPIs, anaemia and diarrhoea among the school-aged children and to explore if the observed impact of hand-washing and nail clipping interventions in our findings was similar across children with different baseline demographic and disease characteristics. The study was based on the analysis of data that was collected during the randomized controlled trial and hence have used the same study participants and study area. Results Children with IPIs had a much higher chance of also being anaemic (AOR 2.09, 95% CI 1.15–3.80), having diarrhoea (AOR 2.83, 95% CI 1.57–5.09), and vice versa. Anaemia and diarrhoea were very strongly related (AOR 9.62, 95% CI 5.18–17.85). Overall, hand-washing with soap at key times and weekly nail clipping were efficacious in preventing intestinal parasite re-infection among children despite the differences in baseline demographic characteristics. The aim of the present study is to perform a retrospective analysis of the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among the Bulgarian population over the period 2015 – 2017. The study involved all Bulgarians and foreign nationals residing in the country who had been tested for intestinal protozoa and helminths. A total of 23,785 infections have been revealed, of which 17,712 (74.47 %) were helminth and 6,073 (25.53 %) protozoan invasions. Enterobiasis was found to be the most prevalent among patients infected with intestinal helminths (81.75 %), while giardiasis (62.05 %) was the most common among those diagnosed with protozoan infections. In spite of improved living conditions and increasing public health awareness, parasitic diseases in general, and intestinal parasitic infections in particular, still represent a significant part of the overall morbidity in Bulgaria, thus posing a major issue for the public health care system.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and associated factors among school-age children in Sebeya primary school, northern Ethiopia, 2017. Results The prevalence of intestinal parasites in school-age children was (29.9%). A total of six parasites were detected in this study. E. histolytica/dispar 19.43% (82/422) and G. lamblia 8.29% (35/422) were the predominant ones. Unclean fingernail (AOR = 1.72), defecating in the open field (AOR = 2.82), and being barefooted (AOR = 1.72) were the determinant factors for intestinal parasitic infections. Frequently washing hands reduced the chance of infections by 68%. Furthermore, children in grade 1–4 and 5–6 had higher odds developing the infections than those in grade 7–8 (AOR = 8.21 and AOR = 2.50, respectively).

Abstract Objective Parasitic infections are the commonest infections affecting 3.5 billion people leading 450 million illnesses. Parasites are major public health problems in developing countries. This study was aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of parasitic infections among patients. A cross sectional study was conducted on 364 patients, attending Shahura Health Center, Northwest Ethiopia. Stool specimens were collected and examined using formol-ether concentration technique. Socio-demographic data collected using questionnaire. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to calculate the strength of association between variables. Result The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitosis was 56.9%. The most prevalent parasite was Entamoeba histolytica/dispar 32.4% followed by Hookworm species 11.8% and Giardia lamblia 7.4% singly or mixed with other parasites. Furthermore, double and triple parasitic infections were observed in 3% and 1.4% patients respectively. Being male in gender (P = 0.049), age group interval between 1 and 20 years of old (P = 0.012), having stomach pain (P = 0.032) and having diarrhea (P = 0.007) were found to be significantly associated with parasitic infection. In conclusion, prevalence of parasitic infection in the area is high. Therefore, ensuring provision of clean potable water and minimizing the contamination of vegetables are recommended.

Abstract Background The prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum and Intestinal Parasitic Infections (IPIs) - with the corresponding pathogenesis among children remain uncertain. This study aimed at determining the prevalence and the outcomes (including anaemia) of the respective infections and co-infections. Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells transporting oxygen to the various body parts is not sufficient to meet the needs of the body. Methods This was a cross sectional study conducted among 476-refugee camp school children. Kato-Katz technique was used to screen stool samples for intestinal parasites. Microscopy was used for malaria testing while the portable Haemoglobin (Hb) calorimeter was used to measure haemoglobin concentration. Results The overall prevalence of the mixed infections was 63.03%. Plasmodium falciparum was most prevalent of the single infections 262(55.04%) followed by Taenia spp. 14 (2.9%), Schistosoma mansoni 12(2.5%), Giardia lamblia 7 (2.9%), Trichuris trichiura 2(0.4%), Hookworm 2(0.4%) and Strongyloides stercoralis 1(0.2%). The odds of developing simple or uncomplicated malaria infection or anaemia was 14 times higher in individuals with dual co-infection with Plasmodium falciparum + Taenia sp. compared to single parasitic infection (Odds = 14.13, P = 0.019). Co-infection with Plasmodium falciparum + Taenia spp, was a strong predictor of Malaria and anaemia. Conclusion This study shows that Plasmodium falciparum and Taenia spp. co-infections is a stronger predictor of malaria and anaemia. The prevalence of malaria and anaemia remains higher than the other regions in Uganda outside restricted settlements. The findings of this study underline the need for pragmatic intervention programmes to reduce burden of the co-infections in the study area and similar settlements.

Abstract Background Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) have been major public health problems in low income countries primarily affecting school children. Abstract Background Soil-transmitted helminthes (STH) infections are among the most common infections worldwide and affect the most deprived communities. Adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) prevents environmental contamination, thereby preventing transmission of STH. Cognizant of this, WASH education was implemented in rural Dembiya to reduce intestinal parasitic infections. This study was, therefore, conducted to assess the impacts of the intervention on households’ WASH conditions and prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections. Method An uncontrolled before-and-after intervention study was used. Cross-sectional studies were done before and after the intervention. Two hundred twenty-five and 302 under five children were recruited randomly at the baseline and endline, respectively. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and observational checklists. Direct stool examination and Kato-Katz methods were used to identify parasites in the stool. We used percent point change and prevalence ratio (PR) to see the effects of the intervention on WASH conditions and prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections respectively. Pearson chi-squared and Fisher’s exact tests were used to test for statistically significant percentage point changes of WASH conditions. The effect of the intervention on intestinal parasitic infections was statistically tested on the basis of PR with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results The baseline prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was 25.8%, and the endline prevalence was 23.8%. The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was not significantly decreased at the endline compared with the baseline [PR = 0.92, 95% CI = (0.62, 1.38)]. Ascaris Lumbricoides was the most prevalent parasitic infection both at the baseline and endline.
