AbstractDespite increasing global awareness of mental health issues, understanding the perception and influences of depression remains limited within specific cultural contexts such as Southeast Nigeria. This study investigates how residents define and perceive depression, exploring socio-cultural, demographic, and religious factors that shape these perceptions. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty participants (10 males and 10 females) from Anaocha and Idemili South Local Government Areas in Anambra State. Thematic analysis revealed that depression is perceived as a profound emotional and psychological burden, characterized by sadness, hopelessness, and isolation. Influential socio-cultural factors included beliefs in supernatural forces, traditional healing practices, gender norms, educational levels, and religious/spiritual practices. Stigma emerged as a significant barrier to help-seeking, with cultural expectations of resilience and reliance on religious coping mechanisms complicating the mental health landscape. The study proposes resilience-based interventions to enhance help-seeking behavior and support individuals with internalized stigma. These interventions by professional service providers such as social workers will increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and promote community resilience. Future research could also prioritize comparative studies across different regions to examine regional variations in depression perceptions and inform tailored interventions in social service delivery that effectively address local socio-cultural contexts, thereby advancing social research. Knowledge about neighborhood characteristics that predict disease burden can be used to guide equity-based public health interventions or targeted social services. We used a case-control design to examine the association between area-level social vulnerability and severe COVID-19 using electronic health records (EHR) from a regional health information hub in the greater Philadelphia region. Severe COVID-19 cases (n = 15,464 unique patients) were defined as those with an inpatient admission and a diagnosis of COVID-19 in 2020. Controls (n = 78,600; 5:1 control-case ratio) were a random sample of individuals who did not have a COVID-19 diagnosis from the same geographic area. Retrospective data on comorbidities and demographic variables were extracted from EHR and linked to area-level social vulnerability index (SVI) data using ZIP codes. Models adjusted for different sets of covariates showed incidence rate ratios (IRR) ranging from 1.15 (95% CI, 1.13–1.17) in the model adjusted for individual-level age, sex, and marital status to 1.09 (95% CI, 1.08–1.11) in the fully adjusted model, which included individual-level comorbidities and race/ethnicity. The fully adjusted model indicates that a 10% higher area-level SVI was associated with a 9% higher risk of severe COVID-19. Individuals in neighborhoods with high social vulnerability were more likely to have severe COVID-19 after accounting for comorbidities and demographic characteristics. Our findings support initiatives incorporating neighborhood-level social determinants of health when planning interventions and allocating resources to mitigate epidemic respiratory diseases, including other coronavirus or influenza viruses. Noting the importance of food assistance programs to low income families in New York City (NYC), the research questions for the present study were: (1) What are the facilitators and barriers to social service utilization for food pantry clients in the South Bronx?, and (2) Does receiving food pantry services serve as a point of entry for social service utilization? We surveyed 218 food pantry clients at a community-based, social service organization based in the South Bronx. Our findings indicate that being aware of local social services was the strongest predictor for utilizing social services. Social service utilization was also predicted by high use of the food pantry (weekly or more); high levels of food insecurity, depressive symptoms; and the ability to communicate effectively in English. Given rising inflation costs and the continued higher expenses associated with food consumption in the United States generally and in NYC specifically, our findings suggest that food pantry sites in the South Bronx bear the potential to be vital entry points for social service referral and utilization, particularly for the screening and assessment of depressive symptoms. Given these findings, nonprofit leaders and social service funders should prioritize capacity building of food pantries as sites for the delivery of health promotion interventions and social services. Background: Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a significant global public health problem and a violation of human rights experienced by one in three women worldwide. This study explores community perceptions of and responses to VAWG and challenges in accessing support services among female violence survivors in Arbaminch City. Methods: We adopted a phenomenological explorative qualitative study design. A total of 62 participants including female violence survivors, religious leaders, service providers, police, women, and men in participated in interviews, focus group discussions, and observations in August 2022. Participants were selected purposively, and the findings were analyzed thematically. We applied data source and respondent triangulation to increase the findings' trustworthiness. Results: Community perceptions of VAWG, specifically of intimate partner violence (IPV) and non-partner sexual violence (NPSV), varied depending on gender, age, and social position. IPV and NPSV were normalized through tolerance and denial by young and married men, while resistance to all forms of violence was common among women. Survivors of violence responded to the act of violence by leaving their homes, separating from their husbands, or taking harsh actions against their husbands, such as murder. Support for VAWG survivors was available through health care, free legal services, and a temporary shelter. Yet factors ranging from individual to societal levels, such as fear, lack of knowledge, lack of family and community support, and social and legal injustice, were barriers to accessing existing services. Nonetheless, violence survivors desired to speak about their experiences and seek psychosocial support. Conclusions: Our qualitative evidence gathered here can inform tailored VAWG prevention and response services such as interventions to shift social norms and the perception towards VAWG among different population group through raising awareness in schools, health care settings, faith-based venues, and using social media. Psychosocial concerns are common among youth who sustained a burn injury. Detecting psychosocial distress early is essential to ensure appropriate treatment and referrals. Thus far, research has focused largely on the long-term outcomes of pediatric burn survivors. The current quality improvement initiative details the implementation and outcomes of brief, pragmatic screening to assess psychosocial concerns among pediatric burn survivors in an outpatient setting. A primary caregiver completed an age-appropriate psychosocial screener for youth aged 4-10 years (n = 69), while patients aged 11-17 years (n = 72) completed a self-report screener. Total scores were used to categorize patients as acute risk (i.e. emotional concerns requiring immediate attention), moderate risk (i.e. elevated symptoms, but no immediate safety concerns), or low risk (i.e. endorsing few to no symptoms). Patients with acute risk were evaluated by medical staff to determine the need for immediate psychiatric intervention or social services referrals. Patients with moderate risk met with the on-site psychology team during their clinic visit or were contacted by telephone within 1 week. Patients in the low-risk category warranted no additional follow-up post-screening. Most patients scored in the low-risk category (n = 120; 85%), while 11% (n = 16) and 4% (n = 5) endorsed symptoms consistent with moderate and acute risk, respectively. Results demonstrate the utility of implementing pediatric psychosocial screening in an outpatient burn clinic, the importance of detecting psychosocial concerns in this context, and usage of referrals to address concerns. Findings also shed light on key caveats of psychosocial screening, barriers to accessing psychosocial support, and the potential benefits of embedded psychological support during medical visits. Guided by theories of socialization and just policy theory, we explore how students allocate blame when sexual assault prevention programming hypothetically varies, net of the effects of evaluators' traits. Using a survey instrument containing a series of vignettes, we ask whether university students' (N = 254) perceptions of responsibility attributed to victims, perpetrators, bystanders, and university administrators varies by hypothetical program trainee and also by the hypothetical implementation of any program versus no program. Findings indicate that students allocate more blame to bystanders and perpetrators when hypothetical programming includes bystander training but that programs that train victims are not associated with increased victim blaming. Administrators are blamed less when bystander intervention is included in programming. However, compared to when no training is hypothetically implemented, students allocate more blame to victims and bystanders when any programming is present and less to administrators. Among respondent-level controls, victim blaming is consistently predicted by evaluators' rape myth acceptance. Implications for future work, theoretical development, and policy are discussed. The negative effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on children's mental health is widely explored. However, the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship among children in mainland China are rarely investigated. This study examines the indirect link from ACEs to children's depressive symptoms and self-esteem through peer victimization and positive identity. Gender differences in the pathways are also discussed. A total of 775 primary and middle school students (mean age = 12.43, 9–16 years old, 46.3% males) in Dali city of Yunnan province voluntarily participated in a questionnaire survey. The ACEs, depressive symptoms, self-esteem, peer victimization, and positive identity were assessed via questionnaire survey using validated measurement tools. Structural equation model with Amos 24.0 was used to test the hypothesized theoretical model. The results showed that ACEs had a direct effect on children's depressive symptoms and self-esteem. Meanwhile, peer victimization and positive identity partially mediated the main effect. Moreover, four paths in the model showed significant gender differences, namely, from ACEs to depressive symptoms, from ACEs to peer victimization, from positive identity to depressive symptoms, and from positive identity to self-esteem. All of these paths showed that the moderating effect was stronger for males than for females. This study contributes to the current understanding of the mechanisms of ACEs on children's depressive symptoms and self-esteem. In school, preventive activities can be aimed at overcoming cognitive dismoderate intercourse, improving the analysis of feedback in the process of communication, will help to overcome barriers in communication, because in moments of stress the person hears, that, what he expects to hear, not what the interlocutor actually said. The issue of social work for children and families at risk is becoming more and more relevant given the deepening social problems, such as social isolation and socially unacceptable behavior, both in the face of children and in the scope of the family, as an institution, given the increasing states of stress, persistent anxiety and depressive states among the social strata. The research methodology includes social forecasting and work with children and families at risk. Forecasting is related to processes in the social sphere, and in order to increase their effectiveness, it is important to look at them in two aspects, namely the development of the social system, a specific forecast and social activity. The purpose of the study is to show the difficulties preventing the improvement of the specificity of social work for children and families at risk for full social support and identification, as well as an in-depth study of the reasons why social work for persons at risk does not work effectively. In a preventive aspect, we must work on mastering those acquired instincts that make us in stressful situations not to think, but to act, reflecting on this issue could show us the way to overcome aggressive confrontations. The results show the need for the correct diagnosis, pointing to the organization and optimization of the mental and physical potential of the child and the family to overcome life's difficulties and integrate into society, according to their adaptation possibilities. With the timely intervention of the social pedagogue, as the supporting party, stimulating the elimination of risk factors endangering the object of social activity. Conclusions: The groups in which the person learns to improve his communication are related to the stages of social modeling and social work with children and families at risk. The empirical model of the practice integrates the empirical assessment to establish the feedback, that is, the corrective procedural intervention and shaping the theoretical framework, by observing the empirical relations for the alternative orientations in the practice. Recommendations: At the level of primary prevention of aggression, it is necessary to evaluate the changes that have occurred, a decree by social workers is required, reflecting the changes in the limits of individual programs for working with children and families at risk. Additional data: Cognitive dismoderate intercourse is a communicative problem in the psychological spectrum of moderation in human consciousness, in practice a dismoderation feedback is obtained, namely incorrect reading of behavioral signals in the process of communication. African American communities are at risk of negative psychological and physical health problems associated with structural and community violence. Street outreach, a community-based social service violence intervention, can build resilience and coping to buffer against these negative effects. Using qualitative case study, the authors explored the effects of street outreach on the resilience and coping of ten outreach workers in two Southside communities in Chicago. Findings from the thematic analysis indicated individual level factors (such as internal state, perceptions, experiences, and future goals) and system level factors (such as family, work, community, culture, and the broader society) related to the workers' experiences of community violence, street outreach utilization, and resilience. The authors presented these factors using Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems framework. Additionally, the workers' scores on the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10 corroborated the individual level factors but lacked the system factors. The authors concluded that outreach programs could help to build the resilience and coping capacity of workers by implementing workplace policies and procedures that promote mental health, trauma healing, and career advancement. Domestic minor sex trafficking (DSMT)- also known as the commercial sexual exploitation of youth (CSEY)- is the exchange of sex or sexual acts by an individual under the age of 18 in their country of origin for goods, services, drugs, or money. Research suggests that the children and youth in the United States at most risk for DMST victimization have complex histories of abuse and deprivation; however, the current theoretical frameworks used to understand individuals who have experienced DMST victimization fail to capture these complex histories. Social cognition theory (SCT) allows for a more nuanced understanding of person-environment adaptation. Accordingly, SCT may be useful to enhance our understanding of the cognitive processes youth who have experienced DMST victimization have and how these thoughts are impacted by social, environmental, and personal factors. The current manuscript presents an in-depth application of social cognition theory to DMST risk and prevention scholarship. Using current research on risk and prevention approaches, a model is presented offering a unique and innovative way of understanding DMST victimization in service of informing future prevention interventions. Background: Calls have been made to rethink the mental health support currently available for young people. This study aims to help re-focus and reduce the inaccessibility of mental health services by offering an adapted version of a theoretically-driven, evidence-based, guided psychosocial intervention known as 'Groups 4 Health' (G4H). To date, the G4H intervention has mainly been trialled in Australia, with promising positive effects on social connection, mental health and well-being. The present study examines the feasibility of running a randomised controlled trial when delivering the G4H intervention for young people in the UK. Methods: The TOGETHER study is a feasibility randomised controlled trial of an adapted version of the G4H intervention. Participants are aged 16–25, currently experiencing mental health difficulties and recruited from mental health services. The target sample size is 30, with 15 in each trial arm. Participants are randomly allocated to either G4H plus treatment as usual, or treatment as usual alone. The primary outcomes of interest are the feasibility of recruitment, randomisation, data collection and retention to the study at 10 and 14 week follow up, as well as the acceptability, and accessibility of the study protocol and G4H intervention. Discussion: The results of this study will indicate if further optimisation is required to improve the feasibility, acceptability and accessibility of the intervention and study protocol procedures as perceived by end users and practitioners. This offers a significant opportunity to support the local and national demand for accessible, innovative, and effective psychosocial youth mental health support. Every year, thousands of marginalized parents become ensnared in the family regulation system, an apparatus more commonly referred to as the child welfare system. In prior work, I examined how the coercion of domestic violence survivors in the family regulation system perpetuates harmful knowledge production and serves to legitimize family regulation intervention. This Article focuses on another logic deeply embedded in the family regulation system: the pathologizing of impoverished and racialized groups. Scholars have discussed the pathologizing of marginalized groups to describe a host of different phenomena. In this Article, "pathology logic" refers to a logic that produces notions of individual responsibility, renders the structural conditions of poverty and racism invisible, and obscures resistance. Three key elements contribute to this logic. One, the policing of emotions by family regulation actors through ostensibly neutral behavioral descriptors. Two, the coercion of mental health evaluations and treatment that produce a formal clinical label. Three, the exacerbation and exploitation of emotional distress linked to family regulation intervention. The pathology label legitimizes intrusive state intervention into marginalized families' lives and reifies their subjugation. This piece makes three significant contributions to the ongoing debate over the family regulation system's role in the carceral state. First, it provides a definition of pathology logics in "child welfare." Next, it examines the procedural and institutional drivers of pathology logics. Finally, this Article traces the language of pathology logics by showing how ostensibly neutral behavioral descriptors are used to police emotions and label marginalized families "deficient." Pathology logics distract from the structures that render families in marginalized communities hyper-visible to the state, conceal the interconnectedness of carceral systems, obscure the destabilizing effects of poverty and racism, and erase the expertise of directly impacted families by equating resistance with pathology. Pathology constructs who is and is not "capable" of parenting without state intervention. Instead of centering incremental reform, this Article concludes by highlighting ways to shift power. Background: Many individuals with first-episode psychosis experience severe and persistent social disability despite receiving specialist early intervention. The SUPEREDEN3 trial assessed whether augmenting early intervention in psychosis services with Social Recovery Therapy (SRT) would lead to better social recovery. Aims: A qualitative process evaluation was conducted to explore implementation and mechanisms of SRT impact from the perspective of SUPEREDEN3 participants. Method: A subsample of SUPEREDEN3 trial participants (n = 19) took part in semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Trial participants were early intervention service users aged 16–35 years with severe and persistent social disability. Both SRT plus early intervention and early intervention alone arm participants were interviewed to facilitate better understanding of the context in which SRT was delivered and to aid identification of mechanisms specific to SRT. Results: The six themes identified were used to generate an explanatory model of SRT's enhancement of social recovery. Participant experiences highlight the importance of the therapist cultivating increased self-understanding and assertively encouraging clients to face feared situations in a way that is perceived as supportive, while managing ongoing symptoms. The sense of achievement generated by reaching targets linked to personally meaningful goals promotes increased self-agency, and generates hope and optimism. Conclusions: The findings suggest potentially important processes through which social recovery was enhanced in this trial, which will be valuable in ensuring the benefits observed can be replicated. The development and implementation of interventions to prevent child maltreatment (CM) is particularly challenging in view of the numerous stressors experienced by families within the child welfare system (CWS). Difficulties engaging families, particularly those who are most vulnerable, can lead to lower program dose and poorer outcomes. This qualitative study, conducted as part of a larger process evaluation, explored participant perspectives of a newly developed, multi-component, community-based intervention designed to reduce the risk of CM in families with young children. The study involved one-to-one interviews with a sub-sample of mothers (n = 12) recruited through statutory and community-based social work services. Several brief program satisfaction questionnaires were also completed by parents. Mothers reported a stronger parent–child bond and greater use of positive parenting strategies (e.g. improved communication and discipline strategies) following the intervention. Facilitator and group support emerged as strong themes throughout the interviews and were important factors in facilitating engagement and reducing drop-out. High levels of program satisfaction were also reported. The study findings demonstrate how a multi-component program, which combines an evidence-based treatment (EBT) with community-based supports, may offer a promising approach for social work practitioners in reducing CM and in better meeting the more complex needs of families within the CWS. However, a more thorough understanding of the factors which promote program engagement and retention, is crucial to maximizing the benefits of interventions designed to support more vulnerable families. This paper articulates state response to homelessness through multi-agency intervention in South Africa. While it argues strongly on relativity of homelessness, it however agrees with previous authors on common constituents of the concept. Based on secondary sources this paper delves into what constitutes homelessness and why there has been homelessness in the country, due to one or a combination of structural and individual related drivers. It further explores the state's use of a multi-agency housing focused approach that integrates appropriate legislations, social services interventions and public works, where over 3.3 million houses have been delivered in the country. While in-depth review of available data indicated significant increase in housing provision, the strategy is confronted with human, material, and rising need concerns. Importantly, there is no certainty yet on the extent to which the 'street homeless' and marginalised groups of the poor are served equally to other categories of the homeless. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The essay proposes to think about whether the practices we carry out through community intervention are political. The answer would not take long to arrive and it would be the expected one: it would affirm that they are political. And they are political because they seek to intervene in a social sector where social organization has not achieved, by action and omission, the consolidation of subjectivities proposed by modernity. It is perceived that it is in the decision to intervene on the consequences and not on the structural causes that the ideology of the matter lies. Therefore, if we were to make the mistake of approaching the community from the non-place, what we would be reinforcing in the communities -most of the time devastated- would be the non-community, that is, the denial of this articulation of meanings and relations of domination that is established as a counterpart of all types of individualism. Schoolteachers' well-being is considered an important factor for the functioning and efficacy of school systems around the globe and as a major driver of school development. Evidence suggests that teacher well-being can benefit from tailor-made intervention programmes. Thus, scientifically tested well-being programmes are of great interest for individual teachers (e.g. from a self-help perspective) as well as for school administrators and policy makers (e.g. to offer systemic support). The present paper provides a review of 29 peer-reviewed research papers that focus on interventions fostering well-being in teachers. The results show that a wide range of interventions and measurement approaches have been used and reported. Critically, few studies have used a rigorous methodological approach. On the basis of the review, it can be concluded that the field is still in its formation phase. Interventions as well as the scientific study of such interventions are quite novel in this context. Therefore, four major recommendations for advancing the scientific study of teacher well-being interventions are proposed, including conceptual advances and developments in the design, dissemination and study of interventions. Here, we present an approach to practice team action by way of imagery and examine its impact on team cognitions in long-term memory. We investigated the impact of a 4-week team action imagery intervention on futsal players' mental representations of team-level tactics. Skilled futsal players were assigned to either an imagery training group or a no imagery training control group. Participants in the imagery training group practiced four team-level tactics by imagining team actions in specific game situations for three times a week. Results revealed that the imagery training group's representations were more similar to that of an expert representation after the intervention compared with the control group. This study indicates that team action imagery training can have a significant impact on players' tactical skill representations and thus order formation in long-term memory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Love Your Neighbor Collaborative (LYNC) is a multi-sector collaborative of nonprofit community-based organizations, faith communities, educational institutions, local government, and local supportive businesses to target health disparities for the vulnerable population of individuals in homelessness, and near homelessness, throughout the city of Riverside, California. The goal of LYNC is to reduce and prevent homelessness by building a coalition of RAOs, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations to work collaboratively with the city of Riverside to create a stronger, more integrated collective effort resourcing those who are in homeless situations or at risk of losing their home. Background: Local politicians can serve as enablers or barriers for health and social organizations to implement evidence, impacting the context of health and social service organizations. Increasing local politicians' knowledge about, and support for, evidence-based practice (EBP) could be a way to strengthen the conditions in social service organizations for EBP. The aim of the study was to describe the development and assess the perceived feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of an intervention to enable local political committees to support the implementation of EBP. Furthermore, the achievement of the learning outcomes was examined. Methods: Workshops and interviews were used to co-create the intervention with social service representatives (n = 8) and local politicians (n = 6). A single-arm, non-blinded feasibility study was conducted in a social welfare committee with local politicians (n = 14) and representatives from social services (n = 4). Interviews and pre-post questionnaires were used to assess the intervention's feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, and learning outcomes. Progression criteria was set to > 80% of respondents judging the intervention to be feasible, acceptable, and appropriate. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Results: The quantitative and qualitative results indicate that the intervention was perceived as acceptable and appropriate. However, the progression criteria for feasibility were not fully met. Qualitative findings show that the intervention was perceived as interesting, fun, and created curiosity to learn more about EBP. The discussions between the committee and the representatives from the social services department were much valued. Conclusions: Careful anchoring of the intervention and comprehensive local adaptation regarding delivery format will be central to the delivery of this intervention if offered elsewhere. Furthermore, we recommend that skills training during the intervention should be included. The collaboration between local politicians and representatives from the social services department was a vital aspect of the intervention and should not be excluded. In recent thinking on peace, the 'local' has taken centre stage, carrying our last hopes after decades of 'failed' peacebuilding. The local can, however, denote quite a variety of different actors. How we select and define the kind of local to work with has huge implications. By developing a typology of three kinds of locals, this piece points to how installing the local as pivotal for establishing peace can take very different forms, implying vastly different policies. These different ways of conceptualising the role of the local, and what are seen as possible ways of engaging with the people who are at the receiving end of peacebuilding interventions, carry political value and reveal shifts in the political terrain of interventions. The article points to how engaging with locals might serve as an attempt at evading the political and ethical consequences of intervention, yet shows how such avoidance of political consequences fails by pointing to the political and ethical choices implied in choosing what kind of locals to work with. This paper aims to establish the incidence of the socio-economical levels of families in the development of bonding parental competence in the city of Guayaquil, where an analysis of the various documentary bases and scientific review that supports this theme is carried out. A mixed methodology was applied, through a qualitative and quantitative review of the bibliographic and statistical information related to the subject. The results obtained made it possible to verify that the socioeconomic conditions of many families that are in the lower and middle strata affect the bonding parental functions, whose parenting styles have a negative effect on the development of children and adolescents. Therefore, it is necessary to develop social intervention programs that allow integrating elements of educational and community models to strengthen this type of skills. This work proposes the concept «Feminist Social Intervention» (FSI) to identify an incipient practice of social intervention focused on feminist action proposals. Through the study of the social intervention ways with women survivors of gender-based violence in different contexts–the specialized services provided by the Administration, the third sector, and the community and self-managed initiative–differential practices, experiences and stories based on structural components of the feminist historical reflection have been detected which would justify the proposed concept. The methodology used is qualitative, and it is based on in-depth interviews conducted with intervening professionals and volunteers. This concept would allowed:(a) to make visible a form of critical and feminist intervention that is already being developed, although in a limited and precarious way; (b) to identify more clearly what these differential practices and principles are; and (c) to vindicate the urgent need for a unique form of social intervention aligned by transdisciplinary feminist proposals that place women at the centre of the accompaniment, survival and empowerment processes after and/or during gender-based violence situations. Background: Informal caregivers, hereafter referred to as caregivers, provide support to older adults so that they can age safely at home. The decision to become a caregiver can be influenced by individual factors, such as personal choice, or societal factors such as social determinants of health, including household income, employment status, and culture-specific gender roles. Over time, caregivers' health can be negatively affected by their caregiving roles. Although programs exist to support caregivers, the availability and appropriateness of services do not match caregivers' expressed needs. Research suggests that supportive interventions offered through mobile health (mHealth) technologies have the potential to increase caregivers' access to supportive services. However, a knowledge gap remains regarding the extent to which social determinants of health are considered in the design, implementation, and evaluation of mHealth interventions intended to support the caregivers of older adults. Objective: This study aimed to conduct a systematic review to determine how health equity is considered in the design, implementation, and evaluation of mHealth interventions for caregivers of older adults using Cochrane Equity's PROGRESS-Plus (place of residence, race, ethnicity, culture, language, occupation, gender, religion, education, social capital, socioeconomic status-plus age, disability, and sexual orientation) framework and synthesize evidence of the impacts of the identified caregiver-focused mHealth interventions. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using 5 databases. Articles published between January 2010 and June 2021 were included if they evaluated or explored the impact of mHealth interventions on the health and well-being of informal caregivers of older adults. mHealth interventions were defined as supportive services, for example, education, that caregivers of older adults accessed via mobile or wireless devices. Results: In total, 28 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The interventions evaluated sought to connect caregivers with services, facilitate caregiving, and promote caregivers' health and well-being. The PROGRESS-Plus framework factors were mainly considered in the results, discussion, and limitations sections of the included studies. Some PROGRESS-Plus factors such as sexual orientation, religion, and occupation, received little to no consideration across any phase of the intervention design, implementation, or evaluation. Overall, the findings of this review suggest that mHealth interventions were positively received by study participants. Such interventions have the potential to reduce caregiver burden and positively affect caregivers' physical and mental health while supporting them as caregivers. The study findings highlight the importance of making support available to help facilitate caregivers'use of mHealth interventions, as well as in the use of appropriate language and text. Conclusions: The successful uptake and spread of mHealth interventions to support caregivers of older adults will depend on creating opportunities for the inclusive involvement of a broad range of stakeholders at all stages of design, implementation, and evaluation. As the field of sport-for-development (SFD) has developed, there has been increasing debate over the ability of SFD programs to effect lasting structural change on target communities. Highlighting the barriers to SFD program delivery in five Pacific Island nations, in this paper we argue that numerous challenges emerging at macro-, meso-, and microlevels must be explored, understood, and accounted for to enact structural change. Building on thematic findings from our empirical cross-nation research project, we discuss the importance of addressing SFD challenges at all levels of society to ensure that interventions are appropriately tailored for the specific and often divergent sociocultural contexts in the Pacific Islands region. In contemporary society, fewer adults marry than in previous generations. It is also true that there have been increases in the number of non-marital births. The combination of these demographic trends mean that large numbers of fathers live apart from their children and are at risk for disengagement as a result of the conflict that characterizes many co-parenting relationships. In response, there is a burgeoning literature examining interventions aimed at improving co-parenting cooperation and reducing conflict. To further examine these issues, the purpose of this study was to give voice to custodial mothers enrolled in a co-parenting intervention to share their experiences and perspectives on their relationships with their children's fathers and to offer their opinion regarding the most impactful components of the intervention. In-depth qualitative data were collected from 55 custodial mothers participating in focus groups and follow up individual interviews. Data analysis revealed that many of the mothers reported improvements in their co-parenting relationships over time. The absence or presence of empathy also emerged as a salient factor in shaping the mothers' co-parenting experiences, a finding that may have implications for practitioners and researchers interested in the dynamics of family functioning. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global concern. Interventions designed to prevent IPV are often participatory in nature, implemented in face-to-face settings and seek to create 'safe social spaces'. We however do not fully understand how safe social spaces can be created in online spaces. Our study sought to understand the possibility of creating safe social spaces online, supportive of participatory interventions, from the perspective of those developing and implementing IPV prevention interventions. We conducted in-depth interviews with a global sample of 20 researchers and practitioners. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic network analysis. We found mixed results about the possibility of creating safe social spaces online. Researchers and practitioners raised issues such as sharing of devices, the difficulties in developing trust and a sense of community online, challenges in having privacy and confidentiality online and difficulty in reading non-verbal cues as some of the key considerations when creating online safe social spaces. Younger researchers and practitioners were more optimistic about creating safe social spaces online. Background: A large corpus of research indicates that the media plays a key role in shaping public beliefs, opinions and attitudes towards social groups. Some research from the United States indicates that military Veterans are sometimes framed in a stereotypical and stigmatizing manner, however there is a lack of research on Canadian media coverage of Veterans. As such, the overarching aim of this study is to assess the tone and content of Canadian media coverage of military Veterans, with a focus on PTSD and suicide. The first objective is to document and analyze common themes, content and temporal patterns in Canadian media coverage of Veterans per se. The second objective is to examine common themes and content in the sub-set of articles having PTSD as a theme. The third objective is to assess adherence to responsible reporting of suicide guidelines in the sub-set of articles having suicide as a theme. Methods: We used validated and systematic methods including use of key words, retrieval software and inter-rater reliability tests to collect and code news articles (N = 915) about Veterans from over 50 media sources during a 12-month period, with specific coding of articles about PTSD (N = 93) and suicide (N = 61). Results: Analysis revealed that the most common theme is 'honour or commemoration of Veterans' which occurred in over half of the articles. In contrast 14% of articles focused on danger, violence or criminality. In the sub-set of articles with PTSD as a theme, over 60% focused on danger, violence or criminality, while only around 1 in 3 focused on recovery, rehabilitation, or health/social service intervention. In the sub-set of articles about suicide, there was generally strong adherence to responsible reporting guidelines, though less than 5% gave help-seeking information. Moreover, most reporting on PTSD and suicide focused on a single anomalous murder-suicide incident, with few articles about suicide prevention, helpful resources and modifiable risk factors. Conclusions: The results reveal some encouraging findings as well as a need to diversify media coverage of Canadian Veterans. This could be achieved through targeted educational outreach to help Canadian journalists responsibly report on Veterans and their mental health issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time attitudes, which refer to positive and negative feelings towards the past, present, and future, are a salient phenomenon in the developmental stage of adolescence and have been related to better well-being. Positive feelings towards time can be promoted in the school setting through empirically validated positive psychology interventions. However, the extent to which these interventions impact the time attitudes of adolescents remains unknown. The current study investigated the influence of a multicomponent positive psychology intervention on adolescents' transitions between time attitude profiles and how these transitions are related to their emotional, social, and psychological well-being. Participants consisted of 220 (M = 14.98; 47.3% female) adolescents from two Spanish high schools who participated in the six-week Get to Know Me+ program. Adolescents' time attitudes and well-being were measured via the Adolescents and Adult Time Inventory–Time Attitudes and the Mental Health Continuum–Short Form, respectively, at pre- and postintervention. Participants were clustered in different profiles through a latent profile analysis, and the transitions were analyzed using a latent transition analysis. Five profiles were identified (negative, present/future negative, past negative, optimistic, and positive), and results indicated that adolescents who participated in the intervention were more likely to transition to positive profiles (optimistic and positive) and generally reported higher well-being, especially those in the negative, present/future negative, and optimistic profiles. Preliminary evidence showed that school-based multicomponent positive psychology interventions can have a positive impact on adolescents' feelings towards time and well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This integrative review addresses primary prevention programs to prevent child sexual abuse focusing on children and adolescents and professionals. We used PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Scopus, and PsycInfo, with the following keywords: "personal safety education" or "protective behaviors" or "personal body safety" or "child assault prevention" or "protection education" associated with the term "child sexual abuse". Sixteen trials were included, nine interventions addressed children and adolescents, and seven, adults. The preventive interventions implemented among children and adolescents improved self-protection behaviors and knowledge regarding child sexual abuse. However, the interventions aimed at adults presented methodological variations that hinder generalization of the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The low-prevalence effect in visual search occurs when rare targets are missed at a disproportionately high rate. This effect has enormous significance for health and public safety and has proven resistant to intervention. In three experiments (N s = 41, 40, and 44 adults), we documented a dramatic reduction of the effect using a simple cognitive strategy requiring no training. Instead of asking participants to search for the presence or absence of a target, as is typically done in visual search tasks, we asked participants to engage in "similarity search"—to identify the display element most similar to a target on every trial, regardless of whether a target was present. When participants received normal search instructions, we observed strong low-prevalence effects. When participants used similarity search, we failed to detect the low-prevalence effect under identical visual conditions across three experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low birth weight (LBW) and prematurity have been identified as health risks associated with adverse developmental and educational outcomes. This study examined whether such risks affected children's receiving special education services. Using a nationally representative sample from the Pre-Elementary Educational Longitudinal Study, we investigated how LBW and prematurity affected the time when children's health and developmental concerns were raised and when children received special education services, respectively, using survival analysis. We also estimated the timing of special education services after identification of health and development concerns. Findings indicated that LBW and prematurity did not affect the time when children's developmental concerns were raised. However, they significantly predicted children's receiving earlier special education services. Specifically, after children's health and developmental concerns being initiated, those born prematurely appeared to receive services earlier at any given point of time. Background: Poor social circumstances can induce, exacerbate and prolong symptoms of mental health conditions, while having a mental health condition can also lead to worse social outcomes. Many people with mental health conditions prioritise improvement in social and functional outcomes over reduction in clinical symptoms. Interventions that improve social circumstances in this population should thus be considered a priority for research and policy. Methods: This rapid evidence synthesis reports on randomised controlled trials of interventions to improve social circumstances across eight social domains (Housing and homelessness; money and basic needs; work and education; social isolation and connectedness; family, intimate and caring relationships; victimisation and exploitation; offending; and rights, inclusion and citizenship) in people with mental health conditions. Economic evaluations were also identified. A comprehensive, stepped search approach of the Cochrane library, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus was conducted. Results: One systematic review and 102 randomised controlled trials were included. We did not find RCT evidence for interventions to improve family, intimate and caring relationships and only one or two trials for each of improving money and basic needs, victimisation and exploitation, and rights, inclusion and citizenship. Evidence from successful interventions in improving homelessness (Housing First) and employment (Individual Placement and Support) suggests that high-intensity interventions which focus on the desired social outcome and provide comprehensive multidisciplinary support could influence positive change in social circumstances of people with mental health conditions. Objective social isolation could be improved using a range of approaches such as supported socialisation and social skills training but interventions to reduce offending showed few benefits. Studies with cost and cost-effectiveness components were generally supportive of interventions to improve housing and vocational outcomes. More research is needed to ensure that social circumstances accompanied by high risks of further exacerbation of mental health conditions are adequately addressed. Conclusions: Although there is a large body of literature examining how to support some aspects of life for people with mental health conditions, more high-quality evidence is required in other social domains. The article examines how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted housing interventions on THD expansion, incarceration, and the significance to public health.

Children, although innocent, are often admitted into the witness protection programme with their parents and, as a result, they experience isolation and social uprooting. This qualitative study aimed to describe the views of witnesses and staff members on how children are affected by the admission of their parents into the witness protection programme in South Africa. The ecological systems perspective, which recognises the impact of the environment on human functioning, and the person-in-environment perspective provided the theoretical framework. Objectives. To test the efficacy of Babies Living Safe and Smokefree (BLiSS), a multilevel intervention initiated in a citywide safety net health system to improve low-income maternal smokers' abstinence and reduce child tobacco smoke exposure. Methods. This randomized controlled trial in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2015–2020), recruited low-income maternal smokers who received a brief smoking intervention (Ask, Advise, Refer [AAR]) from nutrition professionals in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children before randomization to (1) a multilevel intervention (AAR + multimodal behavioral intervention [MBI]; n = 199) or (2) an attention control intervention (AAR + control; n = 197). Results. AAR + MBI mothers had significantly higher 12-month bioverified abstinence rates than did AAR + control mothers (odds ratio [OR] = 9.55; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.54, 59.30; P =.015). There were significant effects of time (b = −0.15; SE = 0.04; P <.001) and condition by time (b = −0.19; SE = 0.06; P <.001) on reported child exposure favoring AAR + MBI, but no group difference in child cotinine. Presence of other residential smokers was related to higher exposure. Higher baseline nicotine dependence was related to higher child exposure and lower abstinence likelihood at follow-up. Conclusions. The multilevel BLiSS intervention was acceptable and efficacious in a population that experiences elevated challenges with cessation. Public Health Implications. BLiSS is a translatable intervention model that can successfully improve efforts to address the persistent tobacco-related burdens in low-income communities. Trial Registration.
