Here we analyse images of the planetary nebula NGC 3132 from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations. A structured, extended hydrogen halo surrounding an ionized central bubble is imprinted with spiral structures, probably shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at about 40–60 au. The images also reveal a mid-infrared excess at the central star, interpreted as a dusty disk, which is indicative of an interaction with another closer companion. Including the previously known A-type visual companion, the progenitor of the NGC 3132 planetary nebula must have been at least a stellar quartet. The JWST images allow us to generate a model of the illumination, ionization and hydrodynamics of the molecular halo, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate complex stellar outflows. Furthermore, new measurements of the A-type visual companion allow us to derive the value for the mass of the progenitor of a central star with excellent precision: 2.86 ± 0.06 M⊙. S stars are late-type giants that are transition objects between M-type stars and carbon stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are classified into two types: intrinsic or extrinsic, based on the presence or absence of technetium (Tc). The Tc-rich or intrinsic S stars are thermally-pulsing (TP-)AGB stars internally producing s-process elements (including Tc) which are brought to their surface via the third dredge-up (TDU). Tc-poor or extrinsic S stars gained their s-process overabundances via accretion of s-process-rich material from an AGB companion which has since turned into a dim white dwarf. Our goal is to investigate the evolutionary status of Tc-rich S stars by locating them in a Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram using the results of Gaia early Data Release 3 (EDR3). We combine the current sample of 13 Tc-rich stars with our previous studies of 10 Tc-rich stars to determine the observational onset of the TDU in the metallicity range [-0.7; 0]. We also compare our abundance determinations with dedicated AGB nucleosynthesis predictions. The stellar parameters are derived using an iterative tool which combines HERMES high-resolution spectra, accurate Gaia EDR3 parallaxes, stellar evolution models and tailored MARCS model atmospheres for S-type stars. Using these stellar parameters we determine the heavy-element abundances by line synthesis. In the HR diagram, the intrinsic S stars are located at higher luminosities than the predicted onset of the TDU. These findings are consistent with Tc-rich S stars being genuinely TP-AGB stars. The comparison of the derived s-process abundance profiles of our intrinsic S stars with the nucleosynthesis predictions provide an overall good agreement. The abundances derived from planetary nebula emission show the presence of a metallicity gradient within the disk of the Milky Way up to Galactocentric distances of ~10 kpc, which are consistent with findings from studies of different types of sources, including H II regions and young B-type stars. The radial dependence of these abundances further from the Galactic centre is in dispute. We aim to derive the abundances of neon, sulphur and argon from a sample of planetary nebulae towards the Galactic anti-centre, which represent the abundances of the clouds from which they were formed, as they remain unchanged throughout the course of stellar evolution. We then aim to compare these values with similarly analysed data from elsewhere in the Milky Way in order to observe whether the abundance gradient continues in the outskirts of our Galaxy. We have observed 23 planetary nebulae at Galactocentric distances of 8-21 kpc with Spitzer IRS. The abundances were calculated from infrared emission lines, for which we observed the main ionisation states of neon, sulphur, and argon, which are little affected by extinction and uncertainties in temperature measurements or fluctuations within the planetary nebula. We have complemented these observations with others from optical studies in the literature, in order to reduce or avoid the need for ionisation correction factors in abundance calculations. The overall abundances of our sample of planetary nebulae in the Galactic anti-centre are lower than those in the solar neighbourhood. The abundances of neon, sulphur, and argon from these stars are consistent with a metallicity gradient from the solar neighbourhood up to Galactocentric distances of ~20 kpc, albeit with varying degrees of dispersion within the data., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

New detections of debris discs at submillimetre wavelengths present highly valuable complementary information to prior observations of these sources at shorter wavelengths. Characterization of discs through spectral energy distribution modelling including the submillimetre fluxes is essential for our basic understanding of disc mass and temperature, and presents a starting point for further studies using millimetre interferometric observations. In the framework of the ongoing SCUBA-2 Observations of Nearby Stars, the instrument SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope was used to provide measurements of 450 and 850 mu m fluxes towards a large sample of nearby main-sequence stars with debris discs detected previously at shorter wavelengths. We present the first results from the ongoing survey, concerning 850 mu m detections and 450 mu m upper limits towards 10 stars, the majority of which are detected at submillimetre wavelengths for the first time. One, or possibly two, of these new detections is likely a background source. We fit the spectral energy distributions of the star+disc systems with a blackbody emission approach and derive characteristic disc temperatures. We use these temperatures to convert the observed fluxes to disc masses. We obtain a range of disc masses from 0.001 to 0.1 M-circle plus, values similar to the prior dust mass measurements towards debris discs. There is no evidence for evolution in dust mass with age on the main sequence, and indeed the upper envelope remains relatively flat at approximate to 0.5 M-circle plus at all ages. The inferred disc masses are lower than those from disc detections around pre-main-sequence stars, which may indicate a depletion of solid mass. This may also be due to a change in disc opacity, though limited sensitivity means that it is not yet known what fraction of pre-main-sequence stars have discs with dust masses similar to debris disc levels. New, high-sensitivity detections are a path towards investigating the trends in dust mass evolution.

Space photometric time series of the most massive members of the young open cluster NGC 2264 allow us to study their different sources of variability down to the millimagnitude level and permits a search for Slowly Pulsating B (SPB) type pulsation among objects that are only a few million years old. Our goal is to conduct a homogeneous study of young B type stars in the cluster NGC 2264 using photometric time series from space in combination with high-resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry obtained from the ground. The latter will be presented in a separate follow-up article. We performed frequency analyses for eleven B stars in the field of the young cluster NGC 2264 using photometric time series from the MOST, CoRoT and Spitzer space telescopes and the routines Period04 and SigSpec. We employ the MESA stellar evolution code in combination with the oscillation code GYRE to identify the pulsation modes for two SPB stars which exhibit short period spacing series. From our analysis we identify four objects that show SPB pulsations, five stars that show rotational modulation of their light curves caused by spots, one star that is identified to be a binary, and one object in the field of the cluster that is found to be a non-member Be star. In two SPB stars we detect a number of regularly spaced pulsation modes that are compatible with being members of a g mode period series. Despite NGC 2264's young age, our analysis illustrates that its B type members have already arrived on the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS). Our asteroseismic analysis yields masses between 4 and 6 Msun and ages between 1 and 6 million years, which agree well to the overall cluster age., 19 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

To study the possible origin of the huge helium enrichment attributed to the stars on the blue main sequence of Omega Centauri, we make use of a chemical evolution model that has proven able to reproduce other major observed properties of the cluster, namely, its stellar metallicity distribution function, age-metallicity relation and trends of several abundance ratios with metallicity. In this framework, the key condition to satisfy all the available observational constraints is that a galactic-scale outflow develops in a much more massive parent system, as a consequence of multiple supernova explosions in a shallow potential well. This galactic wind must carry out preferentially the metals produced by explosive nucleosynthesis in supernovae, whereas elements restored to the interstellar medium through low-energy stellar winds by both asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and massive stars must be mostly retained. Assuming that helium is ejected through slow winds by both AGB stars and fast rotating massive stars (FRMSs), the interstellar medium of Omega Centauri's parent galaxy gets naturally enriched in helium in the course of its evolution., 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present IRS spectra and revised MIPS photometry for the 18 members of the Eta Chamaeleontis cluster. Aged 8 Myr, the Eta Cha cluster is one of the few nearby regions within the 5-10 Myr age range, during which the disk fraction decreases dramatically and giant planet formation must come to an end. For the 15 low-mass members, we measure a disk fraction ~50%, high for their 8 Myr age, and 4 of the 8 disks lack near-IR excesses, consistent with the empirical definition of "transition'' disks. Most of the disks are comparable to geometrically flat disks. The comparison with regions of different ages suggests that at least some of the "transition" disks may represent the normal type of disk around low-mass stars. Therefore, their flattened structure and inner holes may be related to other factors (initial masses of the disk and the star, environment, binarity), rather than to pure time evolution. We analyze the silicate dust in the disk atmosphere, finding moderate crystalline fractions (~10-30%) and typical grain sizes ~1-3 micron, without any characteristic trend in the composition. These results are common to other regions of different ages, suggesting that the initial grain processing occurs very early in the disk lifetime (, 35 pages, 6 tables, 8 figures; Accepted by ApJ

The A star 49 Ceti, at a distance of 61 pc, is unusual in retaining a substantial quantity of molecular gas while exhibiting dust properties similar to those of a debris disk. We present resolved observations of the disk around 49 Ceti from the Submillimeter Array in the J = 2-1 rotational transition of CO with a resolution of 1.0 '' x 1.2 ''. The observed emission reveals an extended rotating structure viewed approximately edge-on and clear of detectable CO emission out to a distance of similar to 90 AU from the star. No 1.3 mm continuum emission is detected at a 3 sigma sensitivity of 2.1 mJy beam(-1). Models of disk structure and chemistry indicate that the inner disk is devoid of molecular gas, while the outer gas disk between 40 and 200 AU from the star is dominated by photochemistry from stellar and interstellar radiation. We determine parameters for a model that reproduces the basic features of the spatially resolved CO J = 2-1 emission, the spectral energy distribution, and the unresolved CO J = 3-2 spectrum. We investigate variations in disk chemistry and observable properties for a range of structural parameters. The star 49 Ceti appears to be a rare example of a system in a late stage of transition between a gas-rich protoplanetary disk and a tenuous, virtually gas-free debris disk.

Abell 14 is a poorly studied object despite being considered a born again planetary nebula. We performed a detailed study of its 3D morphology and ionization structure using the SHAPE and MOCASSIN codes. We found that Abell 14 is a highly evolved, bipolar nebula with a kinematical age of $\sim$19,400 yr for a distance of 4 kpc. The high He abundance, and N/O ratio indicate a progenitor of 5 $M_{\odot}$ that has experienced the third dredge-up and hot bottom burning phases. The stellar parameters of the central source reveal a star at a highly evolved stage near to the white dwarf cooling track, being inconsistent with the born again scenario. The nebula shows unexpectedly strong [N I] $\lambda 5200$ and [O I] $\lambda 6300$ emission lines indicating possible shock interactions. Abell 14 appears to be a member of a small group of highly evolved, extreme Type-I PNe. The members of this group lie at the lower-left corner of the PNe regime on the [N II]/H$\alpha$ vs. [S II]/H$\alpha$ diagnostic diagram, where shock--excited regions/objects are also placed. The low luminosity of their central stars, in conjunction with the large physical size of the nebulae, result in a very low photo-ionization rate, which can make any contribution of shock interaction easily perceptible, even for small velocities., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures and 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We combine simultaneous constraints on stellar evolutionary status from asteroseismology, and on nitrogen abundances derived from large spectroscopic surveys, to follow nitrogen surface abundances all along the evolution of a low-mass star, comparing model expectations with data. After testing and calibrating the observed yields from the APOGEE survey, we first show that nitrogen surface abundances follow the expected trend after the first dredge-up occurred, i.e. that the more massive is the star the more nitrogen is enhanced. Moreover, the behaviour of nitrogen data along the evolution confirms the existence of non-canonical extra-mixing on the RGB for all low-mass stars in the field. But more surprisingly, the data indicate that nitrogen has been depleted between the RGB tip and the red clump. This may suggest that some nitrogen has been burnt near or at the He flash episode., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The metallicity of a supernova progenitor, together with its mass, is one of the main parameters that can rule the progenitor's fate. We present the second study of nearby supernova (SN) host galaxies (0.005 10 dex) by targeted searches. We neither found evidence that the metallicity at the SN location differs from the average metallicity at the galactocentric distance of the SNe. By extending our SN sample with published metallicities at the SN location, we are able to study the metallicity distributions for all SN subtypes split into SN discovered in targeted and untargeted searches. We confirm a bias toward higher host masses and metallicities in the targeted searches. By combining data from targeted and untargeted searches, we found a sequence from higher to lower local metallicity: SN Ia, Ic, and II show the highest metallicity, which is significantly higher than those of SN Ib, IIb, and Ic-BL. Our results support the scenario according to which SN Ib result from binary progenitors. Additionally, at least part of the SN Ic are the result of single massive stars that were stripped of their outer layers by metallicity-driven winds. We studied several proxies of the local metallicity that are frequently used in the literature and found that the total host metallicity allows estimating the metallicity at the SN location with an accuracy better than 0.08 dex and very small bias. In addition, weak AGNs that cannot be seen in the total spectrum may weakly bias (by 0.04 dex) the metallicity estimate that is derived from the galaxy-integrated spectrum. © ESO, 2016., This work was partly funded by FCT with the research grant PTDC/CTE-AST/112582/2009. Context. White dwarfs are the fossils left by the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, and have very long evolutionary timescales. This allows us to use them to explore the properties of old populations, like the Galactic halo. Aims. We present a population synthesis study of the luminosity function of halo white dwarfs, aimed at investigating which information can be derived from the currently available observed data. Methods. We employ an up-to-date population synthesis code based on Monte Carlo techniques, which incorporates the most recent and reliable cooling sequences for metal-poor progenitors as well as an accurate modeling of the observational biases. Results. We find that because the observed sample of halo white dwarfs is restricted to the brightest stars, only the hot branch of the white dwarf luminosity function can be used for these purposes, and that its shape function is almost insensitive to the most relevant inputs, such as the adopted cooling sequences, the initial mass function, the density profile of the stellar spheroid, or the adopted fraction of unresolved binaries. Moreover, since the cutoff of the observed luminosity has not yet been determined only the lower limits to the age of the halo population can be placed. Conclusions. We conclude that the current observed sample of the halo white dwarf population is still too small to obtain definite conclusions about the properties of the stellar halo, and the recently computed white dwarf cooling sequences, which incorporate residual hydrogen burning, should be assessed using metal-poor globular clusters., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas, Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

We present observations of the infrared fine-structure lines of [Si II] (34.8 mum), [O I] (63.2 and 145.5 mum) and [C II] (157.7 mum) obtained with the ISO SWS and LWS spectrographs of nine Planetary Nebulae (PNe). These lines originate in the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) associated with the nebulae and provide useful information on the evolution and excitation conditions of the ejected material in these regions. In order to interpret the observations, the measured line intensities have been compared with those predicted by photo-dissociation models. This comparison has been done taking into account the C/O content in the nebulae. The densities derived with this comparison show a large scatter for some nebulae, probably because the density is higher than the critical density. Therefore, they are no longer sensitive to this parameter implying that transitions from other species with higher critical density should be used. The possible contribution of shocks to the observed emission characteristics of these PNe is briefly discussed and it is shown that the radiation field is the main driving force responsible for the atomic lines in the PNe that have been studied. In addition, data on the pure rotational lines of H-2 in three nebulae (NGC7027, NGC6302 and Hb 5) are also presented. Assuming local thermal equilibrium the rotational temperature and densities have been derived. We have derived the mass of atomic gas in the PDR associated with these PNe and compared those to ionic masses derived from H and molecular masses derived from low J CO observations. This comparison shows that for these nebulae, the PDR is the main reservoir of gas surrounding these objects. A comparison of the results of these evolved PNe with very young PNe from the literature suggests that as the nebula ages the relative amount of ionic gas increases at the expense of the atomic and molecular mass.

We present a study of the stellar parameters, distances and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of HD 34282 and HD 141569, two pre-main sequence Herbig AeBe stars. Both objects have been reported to show "anomalous positions" in the HR diagram in the sense that they appear below the main sequence. A significant result of this work is that both stars arc metal-deficient. The Hipparcos distance of HD 34282 is very uncertain and the current study places the star at the expected evolutionary position in the HR diagram, i.e. as a PMS star. The distance for HD 141569 found in this work matches the Hipparcos distance, and the problem of its anomalous position is solved as a result of the low metallicity of the object: using the right metallicity tracks, the star is in the PMS region. The SEDs are constructed using data covering ultraviolet to millimetre wavelengths. Physical, non-parametric models, have been applied in order to extract some properties of the disks surrounding the stars. The disk around HD 34282 is accreting actively, it is massive and presents large grains in the mid-plane and small grains in the surface. HD 141569 has a very low mass disk, which is in an intermediate stage towards a debris-type disk.

The {\it Hipparcos} distance of HD 34282 is very uncertain and the current study places the star at the expected evolutionary position in the HR diagram, i.e. as a PMS star. The distance for HD 141569 found in this work matches the {\it Hipparcos} distance, and the problem of its anomalous position is solved as a result of the low metallicity of the object: using the right metallicity tracks, the star is in the PMS region. The SEDs are constructed using data covering ultraviolet to millimetre wavelengths. Physical, non-parametric models, have been applied in order to extract some properties of the disks surrounding the stars. The disk around HD 34282 is accreting actively, it is massive and presents large grains in the mid-plane and small grains in the surface. HD 141569 has a very low mass disk, which is in an intermediate stage towards a debris-type disk., 19 pages, 10 figures. Accepted by A&A

The elemental abundances of ten planetary nebulae, derived with high accuracy including ISO and IUE spectra, are analysed with the aid of synthetic evolutionary models for the TP-AGB phase. Model prescriptions are varied until we achieve the simultaneous reproduction of all elemental features, which allows placing important constraints on the characteristic masses and nucleosynthetic processes experienced by the stellar progenitors. First of all, it is possible to separate the sample into two groups of PNe, one indicating the occurrence of only the third dredge-up during the TP-AGB phase, and the other showing also the chemical signature of hot-bottom burning. The former group is reproduced by stellar models with variable molecular opacities (see Marigo 2002), adopting initial solar metallicity, and typical efficiency of the third dredge-up 0.3-0.4. The latter group of PNe, with extremely high He content 0.15 4.5-5.0 Mo) with LMC composition have suffered a number of very efficient, carbon-poor, dredge-up events. Finally, the neon abundances of the He-rich PNe can be recovered by invoking a significant production of 22Ne during thermal pulses, which would imply a reduced role of the 22Ne(alpha,n)25Mg reaction as neutron source to the s-process nucleosynthesis in these stars., 22 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

A new method, AMORE - based on a genetic algorithm optimizer, is presented for the automated study of colour-magnitude diagrams. The method combines several stellar population synthesis tools developed in the last decade by or in collaboration with the Padova group. Our method is able to recover, within the uncertainties, the parameters -- distance, extinction, age, metallicity, index of a power-law initial mass function and the index of an exponential star formation rate -- from a reference synthetic stellar population. No a priori information is inserted to recover the parameters, which is done simultaneously and not one at a time. IR spectroscopy provides a valuable tool for the characterisation and identification of interstellar molecular species. Here, we present 6-9 mum spectra of a sample of reflection nebulae, HII regions, YSOs, evolved stars and galaxies that show strong unidentified infrared bands, obtained with the SWS spectrograph on board ISO. The IR emission features in this wavelength region show pronounced variations. 1) The 6.2 mum feature shifts from 6.22 to 6.3 mum and clearly shows profile variations. 2) The 7.7 mum complex is comprised of at least two subpeaks peaking at 7.6 and one longwards of 7.7 mum. In some cases the main peak can apparently shift up to 8 mum. Two sources do not exhibit a 7.7 mum complex but instead show a broad emission feature at 8.22 mum. 3) The 8.6 mum feature has a symmetric profile in all sources and some sources exhibit this band at slightly longer wavelengths. For the 6.2, 7.7 and 8.6 mum features, the sources have been classified independently based on their profile and peak position. The classes derived for these features are directly linked with each other. Sources with a 6.2 mum feature peaking at similar to6.22 mum exhibit a 7.7 mum complex dominated by the 7.6 mum component. In contrast, sources with a 6.2 mum profile peaking longwards of 6.24 mum show a 7.7 mum complex with a dominant peak longwards of 7.7 mum and a 8.6 mum feature shifted toward the red. Furthermore, the observed 6-9 mum spectrum depends on the type of object. All ISM-like sources and a few PNe and Post-AGB stars belong to the first group while isolated Herbig AeBe stars, a few Post-AGB stars and most PNe belong to the second group. We summarise existing laboratory data and theoretical quantum chemical calculations of the modes emitting in this wavelength region of PAH molecules. We discuss the variations in peak position and profile in view of the exact nature of the carrier. We attribute the observed 6.2 mum profile and peak position to the combined effect of a PAH family and anharmonicity with pure PAHs representing the 6.3 mum component and substituted/complexed PAHs representing the 6.2 mum component. The 7.6 mum component is well reproduced by both pure and substituted/complexed PAHs but the 7.8 mum component remains an enigma. In addition, the exact identification of the 8.22 mum feature remains unknown. The observed variations in the characteristics of the IR emission bands are linked to the local physical conditions. Possible formation and evolution processes that may influence the interstellar PAH class are highlighted.

Assuming a reasonable range of distances for the nebula, the radius of the star can be found. It is consistent with the mass-radius relation of a white dwarf of 0.9 M. or higher.

CCD UBVRi photometry of the final helium flash object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object) carried out during 1997-1999 is presented, and the light curve from its prediscovery rise to the dust obscuration phase is constructed. The optical light curve can be divided into four sections, the rise to maximum, the maximum, the dust onset, and the massive dust shell phase. The color indices show a general increase with time, first because of the photospheric expansion and cooling and later because of the dust-forming events. The energy distributions for the years 1996-1999 show that an increasing part of the energy is radiated at infrared wavelengths. In 1996 the infrared excess is likely caused by free-free radiation in the stellar wind. Starting from 1997 or 1998 at the latest, carbon dust grains are responsible for the more and more dramatic decrease of optical radiation and the growing infrared excess. Its photometric behavior in 1998-1999 mimics the "red declines" of R CrB variables; the amplitude, however, is more extreme than any fading ever observed in an R CrB star. Evidence is given that a complete dust shell has formed around V4334 Sgr. It therefore shows similarities with dust-forming classical novae, although it is evolving similar to 20 times more slowly. Its luminosity increased by a factor 4 between 1996 and 1998. A comparison of timescales of the final helium flash objects FG Sge, V605 Aql, and V4334 Sgr shows that the observed photometric and spectroscopic features are similar, while V4334 Sgr is the most rapidly evolving object to date.

One of the factors influencing the spectral evolution of a planetary nebula is the fate of the dust grains that are emitting the infrared continuum. Several processes have been proposed that either destroy the grains or remove them from the ionized region. To test whether these processes are effective, we study new infrared spectra of the evolved nebula NGC 6445. These data show that the thermal emission from the grains is very cool and has a low flux compared to H beta. A model of the ionized region is constructed, using the photoionization code CLOUDY 90.05. Based on this model, we show from depletions in the gas-phase elements that Little grain destruction can have occurred in the ionized region of NGC 6445. We also argue that dust-gas separation in the nebula is not plausible. The most likely conclusion is that grains are residing inside the ionized region of NGC 6445 and that the low temperature and flux of the grain emission are caused by the low luminosity of the central star and the low optical depth of the grains. This implies that the bulk of the silicon-bearing grains in this nebula were able to survive exposure to hard-UV photons for at least several thousands of years, contradicting previously published results. A comparison between optical and infrared diagnostic line ratios gives a marginal indication for the presence of a t(2) effect in the nebula. However, the evidence is not convincing and the differences could also be explained by uncertainties in the absolute flux calibration of the spectra, the aperture corrections that have been applied, or the collisional cross sections. The photoionization model allows an accurate determination of the central star temperature based on model atmospheres. The resulting value of 184 kK is in good agreement with the average of all published Zanstra temperatures based on black-body approximations. The off-source spectrum taken with LWS clearly shows the presence of a warm cirrus component with a temperature of 24 K as well as a very cold component with a temperature of 7 K. Since our observation encompasses only a small region of the sky, it is not clear how extended the 7 K component is and whether it contributed significantly to the Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) spectrum taken by COBE. Because our line of sight is in the Galactic plane, the very cold component could be a starless core.

We report the serendipitous discovery of seven luminous irregular variables in the LMC by the EROS project. The stars have V similar or equal to 15(m) to 17(m), (B(E) - R(E)) similar or equal to 0(m), and vary by about 0.4(m) on timescales of 10 to 40 days. The variations in B(E) and R(E) are about equal but the stars are slightly bluer when they an fainter. Medium resolution optical spectra show strong H alpha emission, weak H beta emission and absorption lines of the higher Balmer lines. Absorption lines of He I, C III, O II and Si IV are present in the spectra of some of the stars. The spectral types derived from the presence or absence of the lines are between late-O and late-B. Effective temperatures and luminosities were derived from the energy distributions and independently from the EROS photometry combined with the approximate spectral types. The luminosity, derived from V, E(B - V), and the distance of the LMC, are in the range of 10(3) to 10(4) L.. The strong Hey emission, the spectral types, the luminosities and the irregular variations are similar (but not the same) to those of the Galactic pre-main sequence HAeBe stars (i.e. the Herbig Ae/Be stars). However the stars are about a factor 10 more luminous than the luminosity upper limit for Galactic HAeBe stars. This might be due to a shorter accretion timescale (tau(accr) = M(*) /(M) over dot), or to the smaller dust-to-gas ratio in the LMC.

The IC1396A globule in the young cluster Tr37, hosting many young stars and protostars, is assumed to be a site of triggered star formation. We mapped IC1396A with Herschel/PACS at 70 and 160 micron. The Herschel maps trace in great detail the very embedded protostellar objects and the structure of the cloud. PACS data reveal a previously unknown Class 0 object (IC1396A-PACS-1) located behind the ionization front. IC1396A-PACS-1 is not detectable with Spitzer, but shows marginal X-ray emission. The data also allowed to study three of the Class I intermediate-mass objects within the cloud. We derived approximate cloud temperatures to study the effect and potential interactions between the protostars and the cloud. The Class 0 object is associated with the densest and colder part of IC1396A. Heating in the cloud is dominated by the winds and radiation of the O6.5 star HD 206267 and, to a lesser extent, by the effects of the Herbig Ae star V 390 Cep. The surroundings of the Class I and Class II objects embedded in the cloud also appear warmer than the sourceless areas, although most of the low-mass objects cannot be individually extracted due to distance and beam dilution. The observations suggest that at least two episodes of star formation have occurred in IC1396A. One would have originated the known, ~1 Myr-old Class I and II objects in the cloud, and a new wave of star formation would have produced the Class 0 source at the tip of the brigth-rimmed cloud. From its location and properties, IC1396A-PACS-1 is consistent with triggering via radiative driven implosion (RDI) induced by HD 206267. The mechanisms behind the formation of the more evolved population of Class I/II/III objects in the cloud are uncertain. Heating of most of the remaining cloud by Class I/Class II objects and by HD 206267 itself may preclude further star formation in the region., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 9 pages, 5 figures

Background: The O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction affects the production of key isotopes ( e.g., F-18 and O-18) in the explosive hydrogen burning that powers classical novae. Under these explosive conditions, the reaction rate is dominated by contributions from a narrow resonance at E-c.m. = 183 keV and by the combined contributions of direct capture and low-energy tails of broad resonances. At present, the astrophysical reaction rate is not well constrained because of the lack of data in the energy region appropriate to classical novae. Purpose: This study aims at the measurement of the O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction cross section in order to determine its reaction rate in the temperature region appropriate to explosive hydrogen burning in novae. Method: The O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction cross section was measured using both the prompt detection of the emitted gamma rays and an activation technique. Measurements were carried out at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics ( Gran Sasso, Italy) where the strongly reduced cosmic-ray-induced background allows for improved sensitivity compared to previous studies. Results: The O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction cross section was measured in the range E-c.m. = 160 to 370 keV. The strength of the E-c.m. = 183 keV resonance, omega gamma = 1.67 +/- 0.12 mu eV, was determined with unprecedented precision. The total S factor was obtained through a combined fit of prompt gamma-ray and activation results. An overall global fit including other existing data sets was also carried out and a recommended astrophysical reaction rate is presented. Conclusions: The reaction rate uncertainty attained in this work is now below the required precision for nova models. We verified, following a full set of hydrodynamic nova models, that the abundances of oxygen and fluorine isotopes obtained with the present reaction rate are determined with 10% precision and put firmer constraints on observational signatures of novae events.

A parameter study of the spectral evolution of a typical post-AGB star, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the IR colours, is presented. The models are based on the latest evolutionary tracks for hydrogen-burning post-AGB stars. For such tracks the evolutionary rate is very dependent on the assumed mass-loss rate as a function of time. We investigate this effect by modifying the mass-loss prescription. The newly calculated evolutionary rates and density distributions are used to model the spectral evolution of a post-AGB star with the photoionization code CLOUDY, including dust in the radiative transfer, Different assumptions for the dust properties and dust formation are considered. It is shown that by varying these parameters in a reasonable way, entirely different paths are followed in the IRAS colour-colour diagram. First of all, the effects of the evolution of the central star on the expanding dust shell cannot be neglected. Also the dust properties and the definition of the end of the AGB phase have an important effect, The model tracks show that objects occupying the same location in the IRAS colour-colour diagram can have a different evolutionary past, and therefore the position in the IRAS colour-colour diagram alone cannot a priori give a unique determination of the evolutionary status of an object. An alternative colour-colour diagram, the K-[12] versus [12]-[25] diagram, is presented. The tracks in this diagram seem less affected by particulars of the grain emission. This diagram may be a valuable additional tool for studying post-AGB evolution.

This paper represents a collective effort to provide an extensive electronic data base useful for the interpretation of the spectra and evolution of galaxies. A broad variety of empirical and theoretical data is discussed here, and the data are made fully available in the AAS CD-ROM Series, Vol. 7. Several empirical stellar libraries are part of this data base. They cover the ultraviolet spectral range observed with IUE, optical data from different ground-based telescopes, and ground-based infrared data. Spectral type coverage depends on the wavelength, but is mostly complete for types O to M and luminosity classes V to I. A large metallicity range is covered as well. Theoretical libraries of selected spectral indices of cool stars and of stellar continuum fluxes in the temperature range 2000-50,000 K as well as Wolf-Rayet energy distributions are presented. Several libraries of star clusters and early-type galaxies have been selected for this data base. We discuss an extensive set of empirical spectral templates covering the wavelength region from 1200 to 9800 Angstrom, as well as narrow-band line indices in a large number of passbands. Bench-mark spectra of nearby galaxies for model tests are included as well. We compiled numerous evolutionary models and isochrones for stars of all mass ranges of interest, wide metallicity range, and for all evolutionary phases, including the pre-main-sequence phase. The majority of the models have been computed by the Geneva and Padova groups. Evolutionary synthesis models computed by several independent groups are made available. They can be applied to old and young systems, and are optimized with respect to different aspects of input physics. The model predictions include stellar (colors, magnitudes, absorption features) and nebular (emission-line fluxes) properties. Finally, we present models of ionized gas to be used for the interpretation of active galactic nuclei and young star-forming galaxies. The community is encouraged to make use of this electronic data base and to perform a critical comparison between the individual datasets.

Astronomy and Astrophysics 544 (2012): A78 Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics, We observed a sample of 20 representative Herbig Ae/Be stars and 5 A-type debris discs with PACS onboard Herschel, as part of the GAS in Protoplanetary Systems (GASPS) project. The observations were done in spectroscopic mode, and cover the far-infrared lines of [O i], [C ii], CO, CH+, H2O, and OH. We have a [Oi] 63 μm detection rate of 100% for the Herbig Ae/Be and 0% for the debris discs. The [Oi] 145 μm line is only detected in 25% and CO J = 18–17 in 45% (and fewer cases for higher J transitions) of the Herbig Ae/Be stars, while for [Cii] 157 μm, we often find spatially variable background contamination. We show the first detection of water in a Herbig Ae disc, HD 163296, which has a settled disc. Hydroxyl is detected as well in this disc. First seen in HD 100546, CH+ emission is now detected for the second time in a Herbig Ae star, HD 97048. We report fluxes for each line and use the observations as line diagnostics of the gas properties. Furthermore, we look for correlations between the strength of the emission lines and either the stellar or disc parameters, such as stellar luminosity, ultraviolet and X-ray flux, accretion rate, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) band strength, and flaring. We find that the stellar ultraviolet flux is the dominant excitation mechanism of [Oi] 63 μm, with the highest line fluxes being found in objects with a large amount of flaring and among the largest PAH strengths. Neither the amount of accretion nor the X-ray luminosity has an influence on the line strength. We find correlations between the line flux of [Oi] 63 μm and [Oi] 145 μm, CO J = 18–17 and [Oi] 6300 Å, and between the continuum flux at 63 μm and at 1.3 mm, while we find weak correlations between the line flux of [O i] 63 μm and the PAH luminosity, the line flux of CO J = 3–2, the continuum flux at 63 μm, the stellar effective temperature, and the Brγ luminosity. Finally, we use a combination of the [O i] 63 μm and 12CO J = 2–1 line fluxes to obtain order of magnitude estimates of the disc gas masses, in agreement with the values that we find from detailed modelling of two Herbig Ae/Be stars, HD 163296 and HD 169142, G. The light element abundance pattern from many planetary nebulae (PNe) covering the upper 4 mag. of the [O III] luminosity function was observed with ESO VLT FORS1 multi-slit. Spectra of 51 PNe over the wavelength range 3500-7500 Angstrom were obtained in three fields at 4, 8 and 17 kpc, for a distance of 3.8 Mpc. Emission line ratios are entirely typical of PN such as in the Milky Way. The temperature sensitive [O III]4363A line was weakly detected in 10 PNe, both [O II] and [O III] lines were detected in 30 PNe, and only the bright [O III]5007A line in 7 PN. Cloudy photoionization models were run to match the spectra by a spherical, constant density nebula ionized by a black body central star. He, N, O and Ne abundances with respect to H were determined and, for brighter PNe, S and Ar; central star luminosities and temperatures are also derived. For 40 PNe with Cloudy models, from the upper 2 mag. of the luminosity function, the most reliably estimated element, oxygen, has a mean 12+log(O/H) of 8.52. No obvious radial gradient is apparent in O/H over a range 2-20 kpc. Comparison of the PN abundances with the stellar population, from the spectra of the integrated starlight on the multi-slits and photometric studies, suggests [Fe/H]=-0.4 and [O/Fe]=0.25. The masses of the PN central stars in NGC 5128 from model tracks imply an epoch of formation more recent than for the minority young population from colour-magnitude studies. The PNe progenitors may belong to the young tail of a recent, minor, star formation episode or derive from other evolutionary channels.[Abridged], 28 pages, 12 tables, 11 figures. From observations of LPVs (long period variables) in the LMC we derive that the ratio of the number of C-rich LPVs to the total number of carbon stars is approximately 0.05 and that the ratio of the number of oxygen-rich LPVs to the total number of oxygen-rich AGB stars is between 0.05 and 0.10. The lifetime of the LPV phase in the LMC is only a few 10(4) yr, considerable below estimates for the Galaxy, where the duration of the LPV phase (about 2 10(5) yr) is similar to the total AGB lifetime. If the possible incompleteness of the surveys for LPVs is invoked to explain this discrepancy in the lifetimes then the ratio of small amplitude variables to large amplitude variables must be about 30, considerably larger than the ratio of Semi Regular to Mira variables in the Galaxy (1-3). We present a simple model to explain the observed properties of LPVs in the LMC. It is assumed that pulsation only occurs in an instability strip in the HR diagram. The instability strip is characterised by three parameters: the temperature at some reference luminosity, the width of the instability strip and its slope dT(eff)/dM(bol). The first two are free parameters in the model. Based on observations we use dT(eff)/dM(bol) = 275 K mag-1 for M(bol) > -5 and 100 K mag-1 for M(bol)

We present high resolution (R = 100,000) L-band spectroscopy of 11 Herbig AeBe stars with circumstellar disks. The observations were obtained with the VLT/CRIRES to detect hot water and hydroxyl radical emission lines previously detected in disks around T Tauri stars. OH emission lines are detected towards 4 disks. The OH P4.5 (1+,1-) doublet is spectrally resolved as well as the velocity profile of each component of the doublet. Its characteristic double-peak profile demonstrates that the gas is in Keplerian rotation and points to an emitting region extending out to ~ 15-30 AU. The OH, emission correlates with disk geometry as it is mostly detected towards flaring disks. None of the Herbig stars analyzed here show evidence of hot water vapor at a sensitivity similar to that of the OH lines. The non-detection of hot water vapor emission indicates that the atmosphere of disks around Herbig AeBe stars are depleted of water molecules. Assuming LTE and optically thin emission we derive a lower limit to the OH/H2O column density ratio > 1 - 25 in contrast to T Tauri disks for which the column density ratio is 0.3 -- 0.4., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We have constructed a model to calculate in a synthetic way the evolution of stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). The evolution is started at the first thermal pulse (TP) and is terminated when the envelope mass has been lost due to mass loss or when the core mass reaches the Chandrasekhar mass.Our model is more realistic than previous synthetic evolution models in that more physics has been included. The variation of the luminosity during the interpulse period is taken into account as well as the fact that, initially, the first few pulses are not yet at full amplitude and that the luminosity is lower than given by the standard core-mass-luminosity relations. Most of the relations used are metallicity dependent to be able to make a realistic comparison with stars of different metallicity. The effects of first, second and third dredge-up are taken into account. The effect of hot bottom burning (HBB) is included in an approximate way. Mass loss on the AGB is included through a Reimers Law. We also included mass loss prior to the AGB.The free parameters in our calculations are the minimum core mass for dredge-up (M(c)min), the third dredge-up efficiency (lambda) and three mass loss scaling parameters (eta(RGB), eta(EAGB), eta(AGB).The model has been applied to the LMC using a recent determination of the age-metallicity and star formation rate (SFR) for the LMC. The observed carbon star luminosity function and the observed ratio of oxygen-rich to carbon-rich AGB stars in the LMC acted as constraints to the model.Several models are calculated to demonstrate the effects of the various parameters. A model with M(c)min = 0.58M., lambda = 0.75, eta(RGB) = 0-86, eta(AGB) = eta(EAGB) = 5, including HBB reproduces the observations quite well. It is possible that the amount of carbon formed after a TP is higher than the standard value of X12 = 0.22. As long as lambdaX12=0.165 the model fits the observations. It is difficult to discriminate between a higher X12 and a higher lambda. Third dredge-up needs to be more efficient and must start at lower core masses than commonly predicted to account for the observed carbon star LF. It is suggested that evolutionary calculations have been performed with mixing-length parameters which are too small.The adopted mass loss rate coefficients correspond to a pre-AGB mass loss of 0.20M. for a 1M. and 1.8M. for a 5M. star. The low mass stars lose this on the RGB, the high mass stars in the core helium burning phase when they reach high luminosities before the TP-AGB. The Reimers coefficient on the AGB (eta(AGB) = 5) corresponds to a mass loss rate of 1.0 10(-6) M. yr-1 at the first TP for an initially 1 M. star with LMC abundances.These high mass loss rates are necessary to fit the initial-final mass relation and the high luminosity tail of the carbon star LF. The lifetime of the massive stars with these high mass loss rates are in good agreement with the observed number of massive AGB stars and their progenitors, the Cepheid variables. We suggest that the core mass at the first TP for massive stars has previously been overestimated because their evolution was calculated neglecting pre-AGB mass loss.Observationally the distribution of C-13 enriched carbon stars in the LMC is bimodal. There is a small number (approximately 0.1%) of high-luminosity (M(bol) - 4.75) J-type stars. The difference in relative numbers as well as the gap in luminosity between the two distributions suggst a different evolutionary origin. The low-luminosity J-type stars may be related to the R-stars in the Galactic bulge which have luminosities between 0 less than or similar to M(bol) less than or similar to - 3 indicating an origin at luminosities below the AGB.The small number of high-luminosity J-type carbon stars can be explained by HBB. Given the uncertainty in the observed LF and our approximate treatment of HBB the agreement is good. We predict that about 1 % of M and S stars are enriched in C-13 (and N-14).We considered the effect of ''obscuration'', when stars lose so much mass that they become optically invisible. Based on V-band, I-band and IRAS data of Reid et al. (1990) and a radiative transfer model we find that at most 3% of all carbon stars brighter than M(bol) = - 6 could have been missed in optical surveys. Using our model we derive that the overall effect of obscuration of carbon stars is negligible (approximately 0.1%).The predicted average final mass (M(f) = 0.59M.) is in good agreement with the observed value (0.60 +/- 0.02M.). We predict for our LMC model that stars with initial masses larger than 1.2-1.4M. turn into carbon stars directly and that stars initially more massive than about 1.5M. pass through an intermediate S-star phase before becoming carbon stars. This is consistent with the observation of carbon stars and S-stars in LMC clusters.The predicted birth rate of AGB stars is found to be in agreement with the death rate of Cepheids and the clump stars. The birth rate of planetary nebulae (PN) is a factor of 2 lower than the death rate of AGB stars suggesting that low mass stars (M less than or similar 1.1 M.) may not become PN.

Context: In recent years mid- and far infrared spectra of planetary nebulae have been analysed and lead to more accurate abundances. It may be expected that these better abundances lead to a better understanding of the evolution of these objects. Aims: The observed abundances in planetary nebulae are compared to those predicted by the models of Karakas (2003) in order to predict the progenitor masses of the various PNe used. The morphology of the PNe is included in the comparison. Since the central stars play an important role in the evolution, it is expected that this comparison will yield additional information about them. Methods: First the nitrogen/oxygen ratio is discussed with relation to the helium/hydrogen ratio. The progenitor mass for each PNe can be found by a comparison with the models of Karakas. Then the present luminosity of the central stars is determined in two ways: first by computing the central star effective temperature and radius, and second by computing the nebular luminosity from the hydrogen and helium lines. This luminosity is also a function of the initial mass so that these two values of initial mass can be compared. Results: Six of the seven bipolar nebulae can be identified as descendants of high mass stars (4Msun - 6Msun) while the seventh is ambiguous. Most of the elliptical PNe have central stars which descend from low initial mass stars, although there are a few caveats which are discussed. There is no observational evidence for a higher mass for central stars which have a high carbon/oxygen ratio. The evidence provided by the abundance comparison with the models of Karakas is consistent with the HR diagram to which it is compared. The abundances of the planetary nebulae (PNe) in the galactic bulge are presented. Comparisons are made with the disk nebulae, the solar values, and the prediction based on the observed gradients in the disk. The mean abundances in the bulge PNe cannot be predicted by the observed gradient in the disk sample. Except for helium and nitrogen, which are systematically higher in the bulge, all other elements show distributions similar to their counterparts in the disk PNe. The relatively older age of the bulge objects suggests a much faster enhancement in the bulge. The significantly higher mean N/O ratio in the bulge PNe compared to the disk PNe, is caused by the much larger fraction of low abundance nebulae with a high N/O ratio in the bulge, rather than by having -on average- more massive progenitors. This is argued since the low abundance is noticed not only in the case of oxygen, which could be largely reduced if we allow for a more intensive ON-cycle to occur, but also in the cases of neon, sulfur, and argon - the elements which are believed to be essentially untouched by the nucleosynthesis in the PN progenitors.Several lines of evidence strongly argue that in the bulge, the production rates of elements and isotopes mostly produced in low and intemediate stars relative to those of elements mainly produced in massive stars, are higher than the corresponding ratios in the solar neighbourhood or in other positions in the disk. This probably indicates an initial mass function in the bulge which is different from that in the rest of the Galaxy.An evolutionary scenario for the bulge, allowing for a more efficient star formation and a much shorter timescale to collapse than in the disk, with an initial mass function such that the fraction of massive stars is lower than in the solar neighbourhood, is then proposed to explain the exisiting data.

The A star 49 Ceti, at a distance of 61 pc, is unusual in retaining a substantial quantity of molecular gas while exhibiting dust properties similar to those of a debris disk. We present resolved observations of the disk around 49 Ceti from the Submillimeter Array in the J=2-1 rotational transition of CO with a resolution of 1.0x1.2 arcsec. The observed emission reveals an extended rotating structure viewed approximately edge-on and clear of detectable CO emission out to a distance of ~90 AU from the star. No 1.3 millimeter continuum emission is detected at a 3-sigma sensitivity of 2.1 mJy/beam. Models of disk structure and chemistry indicate that the inner disk is devoid of molecular gas, while the outer gas disk between 40 and 200 AU from the star is dominated by photochemistry from stellar and interstellar radiation. We determine parameters for a model that reproduces the basic features of the spatially resolved CO J=2-1 emission, the spectral energy distribution, and the unresolved CO J=3-2 spectrum. We investigate variations in disk chemistry and observable properties for a range of structural parameters. 49 Ceti appears to be a rare example of a system in a late stage of transition between a gas-rich protoplanetary disk and a tenuous, virtually gas-free debris disk., 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The fact that Space Telescope WFPC2 images of the planetary nebula NGC 6537 fail to show the central star is used to derive a limit to its magnitude: it is fainter than a magnitude of 22.4 in the visible. This is used to derive a lower limit to the temperature of the star. The Zanstra temperature is at least 500 000 K. The Energy Balance temperature is found to be consistent with this value, as is the ionization state of the nebula. Assuming a reasonable range of distances for the nebula, the radius of the star can be found. It is consistent with the mass-radius relation of a white dwarf of 0.9 M. or higher.

CCD UBVRi photometry of the final helium flash object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object) carried out during 1997-1999 is presented, and the light curve from its prediscovery rise to the dust obscuration phase is constructed. The optical light curve can be divided into four sections, the rise to maximum, the maximum, the dust onset, and the massive dust shell phase. The color indices show a general increase with time, first because of the photospheric expansion and cooling and later because of the dust-forming events. The energy distributions for the years 1996-1999 show that an increasing part of the energy is radiated at infrared wavelengths. In 1996 the infrared excess is likely caused by free-free radiation in the stellar wind. Starting from 1997 or 1998 at the latest, carbon dust grains are responsible for the more and more dramatic decrease of optical radiation and the growing infrared excess. Its photometric behavior in 1998-1999 mimics the "red declines" of R CrB variables; the amplitude, however, is more extreme than any fading ever observed in an R CrB star. Evidence is given that a complete dust shell has formed around V4334 Sgr. It therefore shows similarities with dust-forming classical novae, although it is evolving similar to 20 times more slowly. Its luminosity increased by a factor 4 between 1996 and 1998. A comparison of timescales of the final helium flash objects FG Sge, V605 Aql, and V4334 Sgr shows that the observed photometric and spectroscopic features are similar, while V4334 Sgr is the most rapidly evolving object to date.

We report the serendipitous discovery of seven luminous irregular variables in the LMC by the EROS project. The stars have V similar or equal to 15(m) to 17(m), (B(E) - R(E)) similar or equal to 0(m), and vary by about 0.4(m) on timescales of 10 to 40 days. The variations in B(E) and R(E) are about equal but the stars are slightly bluer when they an fainter. Medium resolution optical spectra show strong H alpha emission, weak H beta emission and absorption lines of the higher Balmer lines. Absorption lines of He I, C III, O II and Si IV are present in the spectra of some of the stars. The spectral types derived from the presence or absence of the lines are between late-O and late-B. Effective temperatures and luminosities were derived from the energy distributions and independently from the EROS photometry combined with the approximate spectral types. The luminosity, derived from V, E(B - V), and the distance of the LMC, are in the range of 10(3) to 10(4) L.. The strong Hey emission, the spectral types, the luminosities and the irregular variations are similar (but not the same) to those of the Galactic pre-main sequence HAeBe stars (i.e. the Herbig Ae/Be stars). However the stars are about a factor 10 more luminous than the luminosity upper limit for Galactic HAeBe stars. This might be due to a shorter accretion timescale (tau(accr) = M(*) /(M) over dot), or to the smaller dust-to-gas ratio in the LMC.

A parameter study of the spectral evolution of a typical post-AGB star, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the IR colours, is presented. The models are based on the latest evolutionary tracks for hydrogen-burning post-AGB stars. For such tracks the evolutionary rate is very dependent on the assumed mass-loss rate as a function of time. We investigate this effect by modifying the mass-loss prescription. The newly calculated evolutionary rates and density distributions are used to model the spectral evolution of a post-AGB star with the photoionization code CLOUDY, including dust in the radiative transfer, Different assumptions for the dust properties and dust formation are considered. It is shown that by varying these parameters in a reasonable way, entirely different paths are followed in the IRAS colour-colour diagram. First of all, the effects of the evolution of the central star on the expanding dust shell cannot be neglected. Also the dust properties and the definition of the end of the AGB phase have an important effect, The model tracks show that objects occupying the same location in the IRAS colour-colour diagram can have a different evolutionary past, and therefore the position in the IRAS colour-colour diagram alone cannot a priori give a unique determination of the evolutionary status of an object. An alternative colour-colour diagram, the K-[12] versus [12]-[25] diagram, is presented. The tracks in this diagram seem less affected by particulars of the grain emission. This diagram may be a valuable additional tool for studying post-AGB evolution.

Over the last few years, the chemistry of molecules other than CO in the planet-forming zones of disks is starting to be explored with Spitzer and high-resolution ground-based data. However, these studies have focused only on a few simple molecules. The aim of this study is to put observational constraints on the presence of more complex organic and sulfur-bearing molecules predicted to be abundant in chemical models of disks and to simulate high resolution spectra in view of future missions. High S/N Spitzer spectra at 10-30 micron of the near edge-on disks IRS46 and GVTau are used to search for mid-infrared absorption bands of various molecules. These disks are good laboratories because absorption studies do not suffer from low line/continuum ratios that plague emission data. Simple LTE slab models are used to infer column densities (or upper limits) and excitation temperatures. Bands of HCN, C2H2 and CO2 are clearly detected toward both sources. The HCN and C2H2 absorption arises in warm gas with Tex of 400-700 K, whereas the CO2 absorption originates in cooler gas of app. 250 K (as in Lahuis 2006). No other absorption features are detected. Limits of those molecules are determined and compared with disk models. The inferred ratios wrt. C2H2 and HCN are roughly consistent with models of the chemistry in high-T gas. Models of UV irradiated disk surfaces generally agree better than pure X-ray models. The limit on NH3/HCN implies that evaporation of NH3 containing ices is only a minor contributor. The inferred ratios also compare well with those found in comets, suggesting that part of the cometary material may derive from warm inner disk gas. High resolution simulations show that future instruments on JWST, ELTs, SOFIA and SPICA can probe up to an order of magnitude lower ratios and put important new constraints on the models, especially if pushed to high S/N ratios., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 39 pages, 29 figures

A review of the observational properties of the Wolf-Rayet central stars is given. It is a great puzzle why some of the central stars of planetary nebulae show a WR spectrum. It does not seem to be a temporary stage in the evolution of the central star, because WR stars are seen with the complete range of Zanstra temperatures which are observed in non-WR central stars. In this review we will present the observational material available for the nebulae with WR central stars, in an attempt to see where WR nebulae differ from non-WR nebulae, and in this way we will hope to find a clue as to the origin of the WR phenomenon. About 25 % of all central stars with an observed spectrum, show an emission line spectrum. They are not all classified as WR stars however. For example, Tylenda et al. (1993) divide the emission line stars in two groups: the WR stars and the "weak emission line" stars (usually called Of-WR stars). The difference between the two groups, as the name implies, is suggested to be in the strength of the emission lines. Unfortunately there is no atlas of the spectra of individual stars, so that a

From observations of LPVs (long period variables) in the LMC we derive that the ratio of the number of C-rich LPVs to the total number of carbon stars is approximately 0.05 and that the ratio of the number of oxygen-rich LPVs to the total number of oxygen-rich AGB stars is between 0.05 and 0.10. The lifetime of the LPV phase in the LMC is only a few 10(4) yr, considerable below estimates for the Galaxy, where the duration of the LPV phase (about 2 10(5) yr) is similar to the total AGB lifetime. If the possible incompleteness of the surveys for LPVs is invoked to explain this discrepancy in the lifetimes then the ratio of small amplitude variables to large amplitude variables must be about 30, considerably larger than the ratio of Semi Regular to Mira variables in the Galaxy (1-3). We present a simple model to explain the observed properties of LPVs in the LMC. It is assumed that pulsation only occurs in an instability strip in the HR diagram. The instability strip is characterised by three parameters: the temperature at some reference luminosity, the width of the instability strip and its slope dT(eff)/dM(bol). The first two are free parameters in the model. Based on observations we use dT(eff)/dM(bol) = 275 K mag-1 for M(bol) > -5 and 100 K mag-1 for M(bol)
