This article assesses the life and career of George Powles, a legendary White youth sport and high school coach from Oakland, California. Born in 1910, Powles guided local American Legion, Babe Ruth, and Connie Mack baseball teams to various state, regional, and national titles and coached a plethora of outstanding athletes first at McClymonds High School, a predominantly Black institution in West Oakland and then later at Skyline High School, a predominantly White institution at the crest of the Oakland foothills, who would go onto legendary careers in professional sport. Among those he coached were iconic African American athletes who realized lasting fame for both their accomplishments on the playing field and involvement in the larger civil rights movement. Included among these athletes was Bill Russell, the Hall of Fame basketball player who led the University of San Francisco to successive National Collegiate Athletic Association national titles and the Boston Celtics to multiple National Basketball Association championships; Frank Robinson, the Hall of Fame baseball player and first African American to manage a Major League baseball team; Vada Pinson, the outstanding outfielder who played multiple years of Major League baseball; and Curt Flood, the gold-glove winning outfielder who famously challenged baseball's reserve clause. In the end, Powles was a coach who served as an important mentor of Black athletes and believed strongly in sports power to bridge racial differences and instill important values and develop character among youth from all walks of life and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. This article reconsiders the state-led, market-oriented, and elite-centered art framework in present-day China. Focusing on the rupture between art and public life, it aims to understand the structural forces that trivialize ordinary people's aesthetic experiences. Utilizing the term "absent others," this study first untangles historical and social circumstances that underlie the formations of the exclusionary feature in art. Against this backdrop, the second part of this study examines the case of a community-based art space in urban China. Focusing on its spatial practices and method experiments, discussions examine the efforts that art practitioners have made to revise the historical legacy, spatial order, and method issues in artistic practices that have continuously (re)produced stratification in cultural life in China. The study aims to contribute to the literature by investigating the relationships among moralities, cultural fit and life satisfaction. Data are drawn from a representative sample of Türkiye, a country with a permanent record of low well‐being scores and indications of polarisation over moral values. Consistent with the hypotheses, binding morality is found to have a strong overall positive effect on life satisfaction, both directly and indirectly via cultural fit. Additionally, results substantiate the prediction that individualising morality will be associated with diminished life satisfaction. Nonetheless, analyses regarding cultural fit exhibit mixed results and should be interpreted with caution. In this paper, I explore an underappreciated tension between two epistemic values: epistemic autonomy and the love of truth. On the one hand, it seems as though any healthy intellectual life includes thinking about a number of issues for oneself. On the other hand, it seems as though taking inquiry seriously requires you to take the best available route to the answer, and typically that is not thinking for yourself. For nearly any question you want to investigate, there is someone who is in a better epistemic position than you are to determine the answer. In what follows, I will first clarify our central question and sharpen this novel puzzle regarding epistemic autonomy. Having done so, I will argue that autonomous deliberation can be epistemically valuable to inquirers both when it is successful, as well as when it is unsuccessful. This article addresses a creative practice and philosophical line of enquiry that marked the culmination of Martin Buber's first period and was honoured as part of his commitment to community-building thereafter. The article will historicise this period of Buber's intellectual life, it will focus on his iconoclastic statements and gestures that were influenced by normative continental modernisms yet rooted in Jewish tradition, as well as his personal aesthetics, and will place Daniel (1913) at the heart of Buber's early creative emancipatory method. More importantly, it will seek to reframe a Buberian proposition that was abandoned because of the strictures and demands of the academic mannerisms of his time, but cannot be so easily dismissed in our own. It is an invitation for new work on Buber's own creative manifesto, here presented as the history of a practice that was set aside during Buber's academic 'professionalisation'. The Norwegian primary and secondary school curriculum from 2020 (LK20) clearly states that the history, cultural life, and rights of the indigenous Sámi people should be included in the school practice. This study addresses how objectives in the subject-specific plans with Sámi content are taught and explores, in addition, teachers' experiences and reflections on these topics. To investigate this, an electronic questionnaire with open and closed questions was sent to all primary and secondary schools in the South Saepmie region of Norway. The results indicate that a high degree of the respondents include Sámi culture and tradition in their teaching, and there is a variation in their teaching from happenings on February 6th to interdisciplinary projects. The teachers report a lack of competence and call for a greater emphasis on Sámi topics in the teacher education programs. A lack of available teaching aids is experienced even though many found other resources locally and, e.g., on the internet. They experienced, however, an increase in the availability of teaching aids in recent years. The respondents pointed out, however, that inadequate teacher competence and a lack of teaching aids strongly limited the respondents' possibility to teach Sámi topics in school. A closed reading of the mobility of tribal life in West Bengal can take us to the Sundarbans in the southern fringes of Bengal; where the Santhals can be traced, who migrated from their homelands in the Chota Nagpur, to the tide country (Sundarbans) only a few centuries ago, to clear forested lands and to start cultivating the virgin land. Colonization here plays a very important role, since this migration was a direct result of the colonial barbarity on the tribal populations in the Chota Nagpur Plateau during the 18th century. Migrant labour, though is mostly understood in terms of seasonal migration, in this case, the opposite is noticed. Here, whole tribes migrated, who can also be credited as one of the first settlers in a land which was otherwise the realm of the deadly Royal Bengal Tigers (where no humans lived). In this context, the paper will seek to outline the tribal roots of the Santhals, Mundas and Oraons, who migrated from other parts of the country to the Sundarbans. The similarities in their folk traditions and religion though can be a mere coincidence, believing in which can restrict one from engaging in the fantastic possibility of rich research in the field. This paper will also address the functioning of the tribal labour at that point of time, and how it changed the whole paradigm of migration, especially the notion of mobility. Public intellectual life is an area of inquiry that has not received a great deal of attention within the field of sociolinguistics. This article investigates the performative dimension of public intellectual engagement in the area of language and gender and, more specifically, how epistemic authority about gender-neutral language is constructed in public intellectual contributions in Catalonia, Spain. Adopting Arendt's notion of truth claim and the Foucauldian concepts of regimes of truth and epistemic sovereignty, we empirically examine the mechanisms of reception and validation of the public engagements of one highly visible linguistic scholar. Our study shows the ways in which this intellectual figure strives to be recognised as having exclusive scientific authority about language. We argue that pursuing the allegedly impartial standpoint of epistemic authority about gender and language inevitably advances the interests of specific political actors and large media corporations of a conservative strand that fervently oppose gender-neutral language. However, previous biographies have focused primarily on his Theory of the Earth, neglecting his wide-ranging interests and pursuits. In "James Hutton: The Genius of Time," journalist Ray Perman aims to demonstrate that Hutton was a polymath worthy of standing alongside David Hume and Adam Smith. In Matteo Bortolini's elegant and thoughtfully-written biographical account of Robert Bellah, we are given the opportunity to study an arc of development in U.S. sociological theory over the course of the 20th Century, in contact with several of sociology's most influential shapers. This means that, to grapple with Bellah's life, as presented by Bortolini, is to grapple with the ways that a broad range of social movements in American history, perhaps most powerfully the 1960's "counter-culture," have shaped contemporary American sociological theory and cultural life, particularly in the area of religion, but also in the area of politics. It is difficult, perhaps impossible, to remain neutral about such developments, and therefore about the character of Bellah himself, as Bortolini presents him. And yet Bortolini manages to achieve an admirable even-handedness in his treatment of Bellah, albeit through a rhetorical strategy that carries risks, as this essay illustrates. In this essay, I accept Bortolini's welcome and important invitation to grapple with Robert Bellah's life and legacy. Unlike Bortolini, I am unable to be even-handed, but I do strive to be fair. While I acknowledge the ways in which Bellah enriched sociological theories of culture, my overall assessment of Bellah's legacy is very negative. In Robert Bellah's religiously-tinged politicization of sociology, and in his relentlessly hostile attacks on political and religious positions with which he disagreed, I see prescriptions for the terribly intensified culture wars of today. This paper addresses the pedagogical implications of the "Global International Relations (GIR)" and "Worlding Beyond the West" agendas. These two programs have criticized IR's Western-centrism and offered systematic ways to expand beyond IR's Euro-Atlantic roots. Their development coincides with other high-profile theoretical and historiographic developments, not to mention societal imperatives, to expand the substantive remit of the discipline. However, the diversification agenda has been mostly concerned with the research output of IR and has treated the pedagogical side of IR's intellectual life as a secondary consideration. Proponents of the GIR and Worlding agendas have yet to convert these programs into a classroom pedagogy. This paper fills that gap. It critiques the practical and intellectual limits of GIR and Worlding pedagogies. More importantly, it provides theoretically informed ways to transpose their diversification projects into the undergraduate classroom. An academic journal is produced by a voluntary organization of scholars who create bodies of common knowledge consisting of the journal's published articles, along with all the references that link to the sources of knowledge for those articles. Even journals in the same discipline develop distinct bodies of common knowledge. New articles simultaneously build on and contribute to this common knowledge and we argue that this interaction with a journal's common knowledge influences how an article will be cited in the future. We explore the ecosystem identified by the Financial Times 50 management journals, demonstrating the overlap and distinction in their common knowledge. We find that journals fundamentally differ in the body of knowledge that comprises them, the sources of knowledge that contribute to them, and the journals to which they make an impact. This paper delineates the intellectual history of endeavours to generate a unified science of child welfare in Finland in the early twentieth century by elucidating the efforts of leading Finnish protagonists to depict the concept of child welfare science. The idea of such a new science was not unique to Finland; similar trends emerged extensively throughout the industrialising world, in which child welfare was being increasingly championed. The fundamental reasons given for developing a child welfare science in Finland were linked with ambitions to develop child welfare as a consistent system in modern society. The aspiration to develop a scientific basis for child welfare was not only about adapting relevant research-based knowledge to practice, but also about creating historical and theoretical self-understanding in the field. The intention was to construct a comprehensive conceptual framework for the child welfare needed in policymaking, legislation, and systems building, as well as in the development of professional practices. This article addresses a long-standing question in European intellectual history: why, if Sir William Jones formulated the Indo-European idea in Calcutta in 1786, was it developed only by German scholars on the continent several decades later, and not by Jones's compatriots? British scholars, it has been assumed, either failed to grasp the importance of this finding or were too absorbed in etymology as a tool for investigating the philosophy of mind to notice its implications. This article overturns this influential interpretation and shows for the first time that there was a British tradition of comparative philology that descended from Jones and built self-consciously upon his work and approach. It developed in Edinburgh during the late Scottish Enlightenment of the 1790s and 1800s. Ultimately, however, these British scholars placed the Indo-European idea at the base of ethnology and not at the foundation of comparative grammar, as happened in Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines how the 2022 World Cup has transformed national and cultural identity in Qatar, and residents' responses to such change. Our discussion draws on interviews with Qatari citizens and those working within Qatar's cultural, education, policy, and sports sectors, as well as document analysis. The paper is in four parts. First, we present background information on Qatar, before discussing our chosen methods. Third, we discuss four themes generated from the data. The first focuses on changes to the built environment and how this has impacted perceptions of cultural life in Qatar; second relates to how World Cup infrastructure is also seen as a continued expression of Qatar's heritage; third centred on the perspectives of Qataris as a cultural minority in their country; and fourth shed light on how certain everyday cultural practices of Qataris has survived modernization attempts, albeit, in hybrid forms. This paper examines the psychiatric work villages in Israel, which have so far had little historiographic attention. In the 1950s and 1960s, four work villages were established for people with psychiatric disabilities. They were intended to create a long-term rehabilitative alternative to the common hospitalization practice. These villages were organized around employment in various branches of farming and also offered recreational and cultural activities to alleviate the patients' loneliness and to create a community life. The villages echoed central values of the new country: labour, manufacturing, cooperativity, and cultural and community life. I will discuss the similarities between the psychiatric work villages and earlier, mostly Western, psychiatric therapeutic models, such as moral treatment and the therapeutic community model. This article examines Japanese cultural historian Ōrui Noburu (1884–1975)'s work on the Renaissance, which he conducted during the interwar and wartime periods. Ōrui was a leading scholar in the field of Western history (seiyōshi) in Japan during the mid-20th century and developed his pioneering study of the European Renaissance with reference to prominent Renaissance scholars such as Jacob Burckhardt and Johan Huizinga. Ōrui's research is mostly known in relation to Western history, but during the war he also probed the existence of a Renaissance within Japan itself. His discussions of both the European and Japanese Renaissance cultures reveal his concern with the question of modernity and the contemporaneous situation in Japan. At a time when modernity was being keenly debated, Ōrui's Renaissance study addressed the degeneration of Western modernity and clarified the joint cultural significance of the European and Japanese Renaissances, although this attempt intersected with the existing narrative about Japan's imperial expansion. Overall, this article contributes to research on wartime Japanese and transnational intellectual/cultural history and sheds light on Ōrui's previously unrecognised but unique form of cross-cultural inquiry. Cultural life scripts organize culturally shared expectations regarding order and timing of life events during a prototypical life course. Prior research sustained that the semantic knowledge of cultural life scripts is relatively stable across decades and between age groups, even though this notion had only been investigated in relatively stable societies, and in mostly female samples. Therefore, this study obtained the newborn and elderly Emirati life scripts in an equal number of younger and older women and men. As expected, the Emirati newborn life script displays current Emirati lifestyle and customs. The elderly life script mirrors the traditional Emirati lifestyle; however, much less in the younger than in the older participants. Furthermore, we found differences in the temporal distribution and emotional valence of events between newborn and elderly life scripts. This study implies that cultural life scripts change with cultural transformation, but that adapting life script knowledge may necessitate experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Birthdays are good moments for Janus-faced self-reflection: where have we been and where might we go? This essay undertakes such a reflective enterprise from the outsider perspective of a scholar trained in classics. It apprises a critique of German studies not in the mode of maudlin navel-gazing or in bitter lamentation of the decline of the humanities but in the hope that it is possible to sketch out and to build a more epistemically capacious field. Running a micro-experiment to demonstrate the narrow range of topics that have been thought proper to New German Critique, this essay enjoins those of us who study Europe's past, both recent and distant, to imagine our relationships to our objects of study beyond that of haunting and of debt owed to tradition. With such flexing of the imagination, this essay makes suggestions for how disciplinary overhaul and an explicitly decolonial reckoning can offer hope of another fifty years of vibrant intellectual life in the pages of NGC. Intellectuals have been engaged in public life since antiquity: from Biblical prophets down to figures such as Machiavelli, Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and other Enlightenment and later thinkers. This article focuses on the life and work of Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522). Its primary source is Reuchlin's Expert Opinion Whether to Confiscate, Destroy and Burn All Jewish Books (Ratschlag Ob Man Den Juden Alle Ire Bücher Nemmen, Abthun Und Verbrennen Soll) published in 1510. Based on this and the scholarly literature, it is argued that as an outstanding philosemitic humanist who saved the Talmud and other Jewish books from destruction, Reuchlin should be recognized as a public intellectual, the greatest of his time. Arguably, by standing up against the destruction of Jewish religious and cultural life, Reuchlin stirred the German consciousness and public opinion that was crucial for the making of the Reformation. Cultural management is a topic of great importance in community development processes, in this case special attention is given to the management developed in the El Cañito television room for community sociocultural transformation, taking into account that there are insufficiencies for its realization, for what is required is a guiding management that guarantees sociocultural characterization to achieve an increase in the participation of the population in cultural life, defending its identity and diversity. The objective of the research is: to project and execute an action plan aimed at satisfying the sociocultural needs of the community through the El Cañito television room. Theoretical and empirical methods were used, which allowed synthesizing the most relevant sources of the topic investigated. The results demonstrated that the proposal constitutes an essential way to promote the quality of life of the population, for the achievement of a comprehensive general culture. This essay proposes a revisionist interpretation of the debates between Buddhists and Protestants in nineteenth-century Siam. It argues that the Buddhist–Protestant debates were different in nature from the earlier Buddhist–Catholic clashes, which were interwoven with colonial ambitions and occasionally erupted in acts of persecution against the Catholics. The debates among Protestant missionaries and the Siamese royalist elite, monks and lay literati comprised an intellectual exchange mediated by the printing press. Centred around the encapsulation and bifurcation of religiosity and modernity, the debates helped the literati readjust their epistemological position during Siam's early modern era, creating a discursive space for the emergence of a form of scientific Buddhism. The latter affirms that Buddhism not only accords with aspects of modern science but was precocious in its understanding of features such as the analysis of mental states prior to modern scientific methods. In 21st-century Ireland, Canada and the Great Britain, significant changes to sexual and gender legislation, abortion access and associated social and cultural life include the legalisation of same-sex marriage, employment rights, access to abortion and self-identification/gender recognition. This paper draws on interviews from the Beyond Opposition research to explore the experiences of those who are concerned about and/or actively oppose these socio-legal changes. We consider participants understandings of themselves as losing power within social relations and the ways in which their positionings can be seen as excluded or marginalised in public spaces. Examining their experiences of public space offers insights into experiences of new power relations, including state sanctions, that contest binaries of marginalisation/privilege. These positions between marginalisation/privilege, illustrate the effectiveness and limitations of framing these views as 'unacceptable' in public arenas. In Turkish society, individuals who possess various qualities and roles such as wisdom, counselor, guide, intelligence, and justice have been considered important and referred to by different names. One of these designations is the concept of “aksakal” (white beard), which refers to individuals who are distinguished by their wisdom, counsel, and guidance in Turkish society. These individuals actively contribute to various aspects of life, including social, cultural, political, and religious spheres. The Kyrgyz people are an exemplary Turkic tribe where this phenomenon is prominently observed. This study aims to explore the significance of the aksakal concept in the historical and contemporary contexts of the Kyrgyz community and its impact on society. Data for the research was gathered through a comprehensive analysis of diverse sources utilizing the content analysis method. The analysis demonstrates the influential role of aksakals in Kyrgyz social, political, religious, and cultural life, which is also reflected in literary works. This article analyzes the Minimalism in the social life of Sarıkeçili Nomads under the influence of Western society, which is popular as a Minimalist lifestyle. It also emphasizes the relationship of Sarıkeçili Nomads, who live in the southern regions of Turkey, with the philosophy of Minimalism. Sarıkeçili Nomads have adopted a simple lifestyle as a nomadic community for centuries, making principles such as simplicity and functionality the basic elements of their daily lives. The nomadic lifestyle they have chosen can be passed on to future generations by ensuring the continuity of traditions, customs, and culture. In this article, the aim is to prepare a short documentary film and create documentation by recording the lifestyle and culture of Sarıkeçili Nomads, reinterpreting it according to today's documentary elements. Initially, a literature review was conducted, and the regions where Sarıkeçilis live were determined. Then, the necessary equipment, team, and resources were provided, and fieldwork commenced. Documentary filming was conducted, and simultaneously, fieldwork was carried out to observe the life and cultural style in the regions where Sarıkeçili Nomads reside. The article aims to visually convey the life of Sarıkeçili Nomads and the philosophy of Minimalism to the audience, illustrating their beauty. y combining the power of visual expression with literary content, it attempts to reveal how Minimalism can be realized in harmony with natural life, offering deep meaning and peace to individuals. The 21st century has seen the rise of a new phenomenon – the creation of statues and monuments celebrating the lives of entertainers. Drawing on debates about popular culture, placemaking and heritage, and in the context of recent controversies about the politics of statues and memorials, this paper examines a manifestation of this phenomenon as represented by statues of comedians erected in the towns of Northern England. The paper begins by sketching the characteristics of the statues and their subjects. It proceeds by reflecting on their emergence in the context of debates about the contested place of nostalgia in social and cultural theory. The paper uses a strategically selected sub-set of the statues to reflect on the emerging cultural and political imaginary of towns as sites of contemporary political struggles. It concludes by asserting that the significant affective investment into statues projects and the progressive potential of popular cultural nostalgia offer an important corrective to crude assumptions about the cultural lives of towns. Digital systems change attitude to music as the sound dimension of cultural life, which can be transformed into a commodity. Despite the fact, that people increasingly interact with each other via digital media, attributes of music underlying the ability for communicational interaction, are often ignored. Even though even before music digital reproduction methods emerged, music was subject to assimilation in the exchange economic acts, now digital world has permanently altered ways of interaction with music as now it is based on datification of virtual actions and digital shades of random preferences. Music is simultaneously interactive and presentational and in the participatory mode, including its collective, non specific interactive creation in real time, it possesses significant individual and social implications. Music as part of real life is not really presented in the virtual reality and its potential social costsare still to be comprehended and evaluated. Everyday communicational interactions among people face to face are filled with musical models between interlocutors as they share features with music itself, but these constituents are absent in digital systems, designed to perform communicative functions. The article introduced the idea that digital technologies encompasses only a limited and specific cultural understanding of music, whichat least distorts or even suppresses its abilities, which distinguishes it as flexible and quite functional environment for social interaction. Verification (taḥqīq) was a post-classical practice in Islamicate scholarship that sought ways to attain syntheses between rational and religious sciences. This article argues, however, that the early Ottoman practice of taḥqīq was not limited to the "verification of theology and philosophy," as it also included attempts to reconcile certain Sufi doctrines with philosophical theology. This tendency is evident in the works of fifteenth-century scholars, such as Sinān Paşa and his shaykh Vefā', as well as al-Jāmī and İbn Kemāl, all of whom tried to reconcile conflicting aspects of philosophy and theology under the overarching rubric of the Akbarī worldview. These cases demonstrate that Sufi taḥqīq was already present very early in the development of Ottoman intellectual life, and that it was a diffuse and multi-variegated practice that drew upon the universalizing tendencies of Sufi agnosticism. Ahilik is among the leading institutions in Medieval Anatolia that shaped the social and cultural life of the time. The Ahi organization was a type of a cultural environment that brought the people of high morality together. Ahilik, which has a unique place in the history of Ottoman culture, connected especially the youth, the artisans and the tradesmen, set the goals of itself on educating the class spiritually and morally, thus producing a high-level society. Ahilik today accepted as the first Professional organization and the first serious institution of vocational education. As a deep-rooted Anatolian value, Ahilik was not only related to the Professional field, but also included religious, moral, social, cultural and political functions. Ahilik, as one of the institutions that shaped the social and cultural structure of Medieval Anatolia, was primarily founded in the XIVth century, when Aydın and its environment was taken under Turkish control and it is seen that situation continued and developed under the rule of the Ottomans over the same region. The Eastern Crisis of 1875-1878 and especially Russo-Turkish war (1877– 1878 are significantly important in the history of the Armenian question. The success of the national liberation movements of the Balkan people and the Russian policy in their protection have a strong impact on the Turkish Armenians, who begin to form a national self-awareness and a desire for radical changes in all spheres of socio-economic, political and cultural life. The foreign policy initiatives of the Armenians are crowned with considerable success, and their issue found a place in the post-war treaties of San Stefano and Berlin. After them, the Armenian question ceased to be an internal political problem of the Ottoman Empire and grew into a problem of international importance. For its solution, are the great powers intervened. The research interest in the present report is directed precisely to this initial stage of the formation and internationalization of the Armenian question as part of the great Eastern question. In the Kabbalah creation myth, God creates the universe by "stepping back", releasing ten holy vessels with his light—only to have those vessels shatter with shards of divine light, or "shards" scattered throughout the earth. In a parallel approach, this paper suggests that the sacred must be sought in diverse encounters within everyday life and professional practice. In counseling or other therapeutic support, the definition of and search for spiritual dimensions must be broadened to thoughtfully incorporate the diverse experiences and expressions of people with intellectual disabilities. Similarly, those who seek to understand people's relationship with the divine and support meaning in their lives must welcome a wide range of "artistic" engagements, an approach exemplified in grief and loss intervention. By examining the intellectual renderings of previously marginalised voices in mid‐twentieth‐century Cambodian history, this article reconstructs notions of who is a political agent and what constitutes the 'political' in tumultuous moments of decolonisation. In 1948, Cambodian women founded the Samāgam Khmaer Sahajīvinī (SKS), or Association of Khmer Female Comrades/Companions, and produced the first Khmer‐language magazine for women, Dassanāvaṭti Nārī (Women's Magazine). The organisation was structured around four committees representing interests in clothing, food, good manners and publishing, and organisers engaged in issues related to visions of governance, ethnic difference and modernisation. These gendered organising efforts occurred alongside political in‐fighting among male politicians in the turbulent years prior to gaining independence from the French Union in 1953. Due to their lack of electoral rights prior to 1955, women were excluded from political institutions. Yet, when the organising women founded the SKS and committed to producing a magazine from 1949 to 1952, they asserted women as political agents with important perspectives on Cambodian politics and society. Centring the efforts and writings of the SKS provides new insights into how decolonisation was not just a male‐dominated and top‐down movement but rather a multitude of organising and intellectual contributions. The purpose of the article is to showcase the archival material of Concert Management Maribor. It operated under the auspices of various cultural organisations from 1946 to 1992, when the tradition of one of the most important programmes of cultural life in Maribor was perpetuated and upgraded by the public institution Cultural and Event Centre Narodni dom Maribor. The Concert Management Maribor's archives contain information on the organisation's operations, sponsorship agreements, event statistics, correspondence, advertising materials, photographs, media articles, and dedications as well as autographs from prominent musicians, among other things. In 2022, it was acquired by the Regional Archives of Maribor for the period between 1946 and 1992. As a leading judge of seventeenth century Scotland, Viscount Stair (1619−1695) was a significant public figure in the immediate period before the Scottish Enlightenment. Indeed, he offers a vital but often overlooked insight into the intellectual life of Scotland during his lifetime. However, as Stair never published anything specifically on moral philosophy, this article asks if it is possible to reconstruct a moral theory on his behalf based on his printed legal and theological works. On the assumption that this is feasible, this article examines how Stair's moral theory relates to the Scottish variant of natural jurisprudence. In response to these questions, the analysis offered here argues that one can constructure answers to central questions of moral philosophy from Stair's printed works, and further that it is possible to classify his moral theory as an early example of Scottish natural jurisprudence. Although there are acknowledged challenges in reconstructing his moral theory, it is suggested by the argument below that, to fully grasp the intellectual life of seventeenth century Scotland, we may need to engage more deeply with the theological works of seventeenth century Scots as well as adopt resourceful methods to build a picture of seventeenth century ideas relating to morality.
