Maintaining stable gaze while tracking moving objects is commonplace across animal taxa, yet how diverse ecological needs impact these processes is poorly understood. During flight, the fruit-eating fly Drosophila melanogaster maintains course by making smooth steering adjustments to fixate the image of the distant visual background on the retina, while executing body saccades to investigate nearby objects such as food sources. Cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis live where there is no canopy; rather, the flora forming visual "background" and "objects" are one and the same. We tested whether D. mojavensis have adapted their flight control strategies for a visually sparse landscape. We used a magnetic tether that allows free movement in the yaw axis. In response to a textured bar moving across a similarly textured stationary background, D. melanogaster fixates the background, thereby stabilizing gaze while integrating bar dynamics to trigger tracking saccades. By contrast, two mojavensis subspecies in the repleta subgroup and one species in the melanogaster subgroup steer to smoothly fixate the bar, seemingly ignoring the stationary surround. Desert flies execute frequent bar-tracking saccades, but theirs are triggered when rotational velocity lags the bar. Thus, D. melanogaster , which lives in visually cluttered cosmopolitan habitats, leverages the optical disparities between nearby objects and distant foliage for a hybrid control strategy: "ground-fixate, object-saccade." In many animals, drastic changes are observed during sexual maturation characterized by the reproductive system development concomitantly to the sexual behavior ontogenesis. These modifications are under the control of internal and external factors such as food. Sexual maturation requires considerable energetic investment, and diet has been shown to affect reproductive activities in many taxonomic groups, especially in insects and vertebrates. By contrast, diet effects on sexual behavior development remain largely unexplored. To elucidate this aspect, we used the male moth Agrotis ipsilon which undergoes sexual maturation occurring between the third and the fifth day postemergence. During this period, males are sensitive to female sex pheromones and a stereotypical sexual behavior characterized by female‐oriented flight takes place. In our study, we compared (1) sex pheromone detection by electroantennography recordings and (2) behavioral response in wind tunnel assays between males fed with different diets found in nature. Compared to standard sucrose diet, males fed with sucrose, fructose, and glucose supplemented with sodium (a mineral element necessary for the locomotor activity in several moths) did not respond better to female sex pheromones but clearly exhibited an earlier behavioral response. Thus, such a diet accelerates the development of sex pheromone‐mediated oriented flight, probably by facilitating the central processing of sex pheromone information in male A. ipsilon moths. Simple Summary: Lygus pratensis transfers frequently between cotton and different host plants, harms a wide range of crops, possesses a strong dispersal ability, and poses great difficulty in predicting pests, but its flight ability and the factors that affect it are not well understood. We found that Lygus pratensis possesses strong flight ability, that the strength of flight ability is affected by the temperature and relative humidity of the environment, and that an unsuitable environment will greatly reduce the flight ability. Furthermore, we found that flight ability will be enhanced and then weakened with the increase in age, that the flight ability of females is slightly stronger than that of males, and that mating will increase the flight ability of females and weaken the flight ability of males. The above results can provide a basis for predicting the spreading range of Lygus pratensis in different seasons or different reproductive periods. Lygus pratensis (Linnaeus) is an important agricultural pest with a strong ability to move and spread between hosts. However, L. pratensis' flight potential and factors affecting its flight ability are unclear. We used the insect flight information system (flight mill) to determine the effects of temperature, humidity, age, sex, and mating on L. pratensis' flight ability in an artificial climate chamber. Temperature and relative humidity significantly affected L. pratensis' flight ability; however, low and high temperature, as well as low humidity, were unsuitable, and the optimal flight environment was 20–28 °C and 60–75% RH. Lygus pratensis' flying ability initially increased and then decreased with age and was highest at 10 days old (flight rate: 71.43%; total flight distance: 18.63 ± 1.89 km; total flight time: 6.84 ± 0.60 h). At 15 days old, flight speed was the highest (3.36 ± 0.18 km h−1). Sex had little effect on L. pratensis' flying ability; it was marginally stronger for females than males, but the difference was insignificant. Mating increased female flying ability but decreased that of males, but the difference was insignificant. Overall, L. pratensis had strong flight dispersal ability, was largely unaffected by sex and mating, and optimal flight conditions were mild temperature and humidity. We describe new specimens and species of apodiform birds from the early Eocene London Clay of Walton‐on‐the Naze (Essex, UK). In addition to multiple partial skeletons of Eocypselus vincenti Harrison, 1984, three new species of Eocypselus are described as Eocypselus geminus, sp. nov., Eocypselus paulomajor, sp. nov. and Eocypselus grandissimus, sp. nov. The previously unknown quadrate of Eocypselus shares a characteristic derived morphology with the quadrate of the Aegothelidae, Hemiprocnidae and Apodidae, whereas the quadrate of the Trochilidae is very different. We also report a striking disparity of the shapes of the axis vertebra of apodiform birds, which is likely to be of functional significance. Eocypselus and extant Hemiprocnidae and Cypseloidini (Apodidae) exhibit the plesiomorphic morphology, whereas a derived shape characterizes extant Aegothelidae, Apodini and Trochilidae. Furthermore, we describe the first partial skeleton of the earliest aegialornithid species, Primapus lacki Harrison & Walker, 1975, which was previously only known from the humeri of the type series that stem from different sites of the London Clay. The apodiform birds from Walton‐on‐the‐Naze show a considerable taxonomic and ecomorphological diversity, and whereas Eocypselus may have inhabited forest edges and caught insects by sallying flights from perches, Primapus probably was a fast‐flying and more aerial bird. The accelerating flat plate is a useful model for studying the drag-based flapping flight (where drag is used to provide the weight-supporting force or thrust). Previous studies have mainly focused on the high Reynolds number (Re) regime pertaining to the flight of relatively large insects and birds. In this study, we numerically investigate the unsteady drag and flows of a uniformly accelerating flat plate at low Re that is typical of miniature insect flight (Re = 10–40). The following is shown. Unlike high-Re cases where the acceleration effect on drag is insensitive to Re, at low Re, the effect exhibits a strong dependence on Re: As Re decreases below 100, the acceleration effect increases rapidly, becoming 33%–56% greater than that of high-Re cases in the Re range of 10–40, before gradually decreasing. A simple model that consists of the quasi-steady, added-mass, and history force terms is proposed for drag at low Re. The scalings of the quasi-steady and added-mass force terms are well known; we find that the history force term scales approximately with the square root of the acceleration and velocity. The above result that relatively large drag is produced by the accelerating wing at Re = 10–40 is especially interesting and might explain why miniature insects fly in this Re range. Movement performance of insects is an important measure of physiological fitness and is likely affected by novel stressors associated with global change. Reduced fitness can lead to smaller foraging areas and thus to decreasing abundance, diversity and nutritional quality, which could weaken insect populations and contribute to global insect decline. Here, we combined two different methods: An experimental semi‐field design applying treatments in outdoor flight cages and a follow‐up experiment conducted in the laboratory, in which different parameters of movement performance, such as (a) velocity, (b) duration and (c) distance of an insect's flight can be quantified. We kept colonies of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris under contrasting nutritional conditions and measured treatment effects on the movement performance of individuals. Monophagously fed bumblebees showed reduced movement performance than polyphagously fed bumblebees. In particular, they stopped more frequently during flight, flew shorter distances and showed less often flight duration of 20 min. Our results suggest that nutritional deficiency due to a monophagic diet leads to reduced flight performance, which can have dramatic negative consequences for bees. Reduced flight performance may result in decreased availability of host plants, which may negatively affect stress resistance of bees and brood provisioning, facilitating extinction of insects. Although food of great nutritional value is an important compensator for the negative effects of different novel stressor, such as pesticides, it is not much known how to compensate for the effects of nutritional stress, especially in landscapes dominated by monocultures. However, our experimental approach with semi‐field and laboratory components has high potential for further studies investigating the impact of different stressors on the physiological fitness of insects but also body mass, or reproductive success and to find factors that may mitigate or even overcome the negative effect of stressors on insects. Interest in the exploration of other planets has led to the success of Ingenuity (Mars helicopter)'s first flight in the Martian atmosphere. Despite this achievement, the flight of aircraft under ultra-low air density, such as Mars, is still limited. A flapping-wing aircraft that mimics nature's flyers can provide an alternative solution to conventional aircraft. Successful flapping flight on Mars, where the air density is very thin, requires an understanding of aerodynamics, and prediction of the dynamic changes of the flapping wing under very-low air density. In this paper, we constructed a simple dynamic model that can predict the changes in aerodynamics and dynamic behavior under various low air densities. The predicted changes were compared with the measured ones in a chamber that could simulate the low air density with a modified flapping-wing system based on our flapping-wing micro-air-vehicle (FW−MAV) models, the KUBeetle. Both prediction and measurement showed that when the air density decreased, the flapping frequency tended to increase due to drag reduction, even without consuming additional power. The model reasonably predicted a large decrease in the lift for the 10 % air density, where the flapping frequency increased by 10 %. Under the 50 % and 25 % low air densities, the measured lift coefficients did not change much. However, under the 10 % air density, the lift coefficient decreased by about 16 % due to less wing rotation and wing twist. While the aerodynamic power was predicted to decrease significantly due to the large decrease in aerodynamic forces under low air density, an increase in the angular velocity and peak angular acceleration caused an increase in the inertial power. Therefore, the amount of reduction in the measured mechanical power consumption under the 10 % air density was relatively small, compared to that under the 100 % air density. Abstract The spread of invasive species often follows a jump-dispersal pattern. While jumps are typically fostered by humans, local dispersal can occur due to the specific traits of a species, which are often poorly understood. This holds true for small hive beetles (Aethina tumida), which are parasites of social bee colonies native to sub-Saharan Africa. They have become a widespread invasive species. In 2017, a mark-release-recapture experiment was conducted in six replicates (A–F) using laboratory reared, dye-fed adults (N = 15,690). Honey bee colonies were used to attract flying small hive beetles at fixed spatial intervals from a central release point. Small hive beetles were recaptured (N = 770) at a maximum distance of 3.2 km after 24 h and 12 km after 1 week. Most small hive beetles were collected closest to the release point at 0 m (76%, replicate A) and 50 m (52%, replicates B to F). Temperature and wind deviation had significant effects on dispersal, with more small hive beetles being recaptured when temperatures were high (GLMM: slope = 0.99, SE = 0.17, Z = 5.72, P

Compared to wingless insects, pterygote insects profit from numerous wing‐related benefits including a wider distribution range, the exploitation of various food resources and the escape from water‐ or land‐confined predators. In order to maintain the wings´ functionality, the wing design and resistance to material fatigue are of key importance. This is even more essential for survival when considering that wings are used for millions of wing beat cycles but cannot be repaired and do not contain inner muscles so that their aerodynamic performance is mainly based on passive, structure‐based wing deformations. One of the components serving this purpose is the endowment of certain wing components with the elastomeric protein resilin building stable and complex material composites with the tanned cuticle. Resilin endows the respective structures with, e.g., higher flexibility and compliance and enables elastic energy storage. In this study, the occurrence of resilin in the insect flight system is reviewed based on previous studies of several insect orders including Odonata, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Dermaptera, and Diptera, and the function of resilin is discussed with reference to the respective structures. The evolution of flight in an early winged insect ancestral lineage is recognized as a key adaptation explaining the unparalleled success and diversification of insects. Subsequent transitions and modifications to flight machinery, including secondary reductions and losses, also play a central role in shaping the impacts of insects on broadscale geographic and ecological processes and patterns in the present and future. Given the importance of insect flight, there has been a centuries-long history of research and debate on the evolutionary origins and biological mechanisms of flight. Here, we revisit this history from an interdisciplinary perspective, discussing recent discoveries regarding the developmental origins, physiology, biomechanics, and neurobiology and sensory control of flight in a diverse set of insect models. We also identify major outstanding questions yet to be addressed and provide recommendations for overcoming current methodological challenges faced when studying insect flight, which will allow the field to continue to move forward in new and exciting directions. By integrating mechanistic work into ecological and evolutionary contexts, we hope that this synthesis promotes and stimulates new interdisciplinary research efforts necessary to close the many existing gaps about the causes and consequences of insect flight evolution. Paleozoic skies were ruled by extinct odonatopteran insects called "griffenflies," some with wingspans 3 times that of the largest extant dragonflies and 10 times that of common extant dragonflies. Previous studies suggested that flight was possible for larger fliers because of higher atmospheric oxygen levels, which would have increased air density. We use actuator disk theory to evaluate this hypothesis. Actuator disk theory gives similar estimates of induced power as have been estimated for micro-air vehicles based on insect flight. We calculate that for a given mass of griffenfly, and assuming isometry, a higher density atmosphere would only have reduced the induced power required to hover by 11%, which would have supported a flyer 3% larger in linear dimensions. Steady-level forward flight would have further reduced induced power but could only account for a flier 5% larger in linear dimensions. Further accounting for the higher power available due to high-oxygen air and assuming isometry, we calculate that the largest flyer hovering would have been only 1.19 times longer than extant dragonflies. We also consider known allometry in dragonflies and estimated allometry in extinct griffenflies. But such allometry only increases flyer size to 1.22 times longer while hovering. We also consider profile and parasite power, but both would have been higher in denser air and thus would not have enhanced the flyability of larger griffenflies. The largest meganeurid griffenflies might have adjusted flight behaviors to reduce power required. Alternatively, the scaling of flight muscle power may have been sufficient to support the power demands of large griffenflies. In literature estimates, mass-specific power output scales as mass0.24 in extant dragonflies. We need only more conservatively assume that mass-specific muscle power scales with mass0, when combined with higher oxygen concentrations and induced power reductions in higher-density air to explain griffenflies 3.4 times larger than extant odonates. Dimensionless numbers have long been used in comparative biomechanics to quantify competing scaling relationships and connect morphology to animal performance. While common in aerodynamics, few relate the biomechanics of the organism to the forces produced on the environment during flight. We discuss the Weis-Fogh number, N , as a dimensionless number specific to flapping flight, which describes the resonant properties of an insect and resulting tradeoffs between energetics and control. Originally defined by Torkel Weis-Fogh in his seminal 1973 paper, N measures the ratio of peak inertial to aerodynamic torque generated by an insect over a wingbeat. In this perspectives piece, we define N for comparative biologists and describe its interpretations as a ratio of torques and as the width of an insect's resonance curve. We then discuss the range of N realized by insects and explain the fundamental tradeoffs between an insect's aerodynamic efficiency, stability, and responsiveness that arise as a consequence of variation in N , both across and within species. Flying insects vary greatly in body size and wing proportions, significantly impacting their flight energetics. Generally, the larger the insect, the slower its flight wingbeat frequency. However, variation in frequency is also explained by differences in wing proportions, where larger-winged insects tend to have lower frequencies. These associations affect the energy required for flight. The correlated evolution of flight form and function can be further defined using a lineage of closely related bee species varying in body mass. The decline in flight wingbeat frequency with increasing size is paralleled by the flight mass-specific metabolic rate. The specific scaling exponents observed can be predicted from the wing area allometry, where a greater increase (hyperallometry) leads to a more pronounced effect on flight energetics, and hypoallometry can lead to no change in frequency and metabolic rate across species. The metabolic properties of the flight muscles also vary with body mass and wing proportions, as observed from the activity of glycolytic enzymes and the phospholipid compositions of muscle tissue, connecting morphological differences with muscle metabolic properties. The evolutionary scaling observed across species is recapitulated within species. The static allometry observed within the bumblebee Bombus impatiens , where the wing area is proportional and isometric, affects wingbeat frequency and metabolic rate, which is predicted to decrease with an increase in size. Intraspecific variation in flight muscle tissue properties is also related to flight metabolic rate. The role of developmental processes and phenotypic plasticity in explaining intraspecific differences is central to our understanding of flight energetics. These studies provide a framework where static allometry observed within species gives rise to evolutionary allometry, connecting the evolution of size, form, and function associated with insect flight. To understand the locomotory mechanisms of flying and swimming animals, it is often necessary to develop assays that enable us to measure their responses to external gust perturbations. Typically, such measurements have been carried out using a variety of gusts which are difficult to control or characterize owing to their inherently turbulent nature. Here, we present a method of generating discrete gusts under controlled laboratory conditions in the form of a vortex rings which are well-characterized and highly controllable. We also provide the theoretical guidelines underlying the design of gust generators for specific applications. As a case study, we tested the efficacy of this method to study the flight response of freely-flying soldier flies Hermetia illucens. The vortex ring based method can be used to generate controlled gusts to study diverse phenomena ranging from a natural flight in insects to the artificial flight of insect-sized drones and micro-aerial vehicles. The extent to which weeds in arable land are useful to pollinators depends in part on the temporal pattern of flowering and insect flight activity. We compiled citizen science data on 54 bees and hoverflies typical of agricultural areas in southern Sweden, as well as 24 flowering weed species classified as pollinator‐friendly in the sense that they provide nectar and/or pollen to pollinators. The flight periods of the bees and hoverflies varied greatly, but there were also some consistent differences between the four groups studied. The first group to fly were the early flying solitary bees (7 species), followed by the social bees (18 species). In contrast, other solitary bees (11 species) and hoverflies (22 species) flew later in the summer. Solitary bees had the shortest flight periods, while social bees and hoverflies had longer flight periods. Flowering of weed species also varied greatly between species, with weeds classified as winter annuals (e.g., germinating in autumn) starting early together with germination generalists (species that can germinate in both autumn and spring). Summer annuals (spring germinators) and perennials started flowering about a month later. Germination generalists had a much longer flowering period than the others. Weekly pollinator records were in most cases significantly explained by weed records. Apart from early flying solitary bees, all models showed strong positive relationships. The overall best explanatory variable was the total number of weeds, with a weight assigned to each species based on its potential as a nectar/pollen source. The aerodynamic effects of wing corrugation on insect flight have received widespread attention. However, there has hardly been any specific focus on dynamic changes to corrugation angle in the models. The flexible vein joints containing resilin in the wings of dragonflies and damselflies enable the longitudinal veins to rotate and thereby change the corrugation angles throughout flapping cycles. Therefore, a two-dimensional corrugated airfoil with time-varying corrugation angles is proposed and the aerodynamic performance is evaluated in terms of aerodynamic force, power and efficiency. The results indicate that the airfoil with time-varying corrugations outperforms the rigid one in terms of enhancing thrust and reducing power consumption. The aerodynamic performance of time-varying corrugated airfoils is optimal when the angle varies in a specific range, and an excessively large angle variation may have negative effects. In addition, excessive height or a negative leading edge of the corrugation can lead to a reduction in the thrust. A design concept for the 2D airfoil with time-varying corrugations is provided and the findings are of significance for enhancing the aerodynamic performance of biomimetic flexible flapping-wing vehicles. A study on colonial Cliff Swallows in western Nebraska found that social foraging and information transfer among the birds has declined over the past 40 years. This decline in social behavior may be due to changes in flying insect distribution and abundance. The study suggests that the benefits of group living for these birds may change over time. Radar networks hold great promise for monitoring population trends of migrating insects. However, it is important to elucidate the nature of responses to environmental cues. We use data from a mini-network of vertical-looking entomological radars in the southern UK to investigate changes in nightly abundance, flight altitude and behaviour of insect migrants, in relation to meteorological and celestial conditions. Abundance of migrants showed positive relationships with air temperature, indicating that this is the single most important variable influencing the decision to initiate migration. In addition, there was a small but significant effect of moonlight illumination, with more insects migrating on full moon nights. While the effect of nocturnal illumination levels on abundance was relatively minor, there was a stronger effect on the insects' ability to orientate close to downwind: flight headings were more tightly clustered on nights when the moon was bright and when cloud cover was sparse. This indicates that nocturnal illumination is important for the navigational mechanisms used by nocturnal insect migrants. Further, our results clearly show that environmental conditions such as air temperature and light levels must be considered if long-term radar datasets are to be used to assess changing population trends of migrants. The amount of energy available in a system constrains large-scale patterns of abundance. Here, we test the role of temperature and net primary productivity as drivers of flying insect abundance using a novel continental-scale data source: weather surveillance radar. We use the United States NEXRAD weather radar network to generate a near-daily dataset of insect flight activity across a gradient of temperature and productivity. Insect flight activity was positively correlated with mean annual temperature, explaining 38% of variation across sites. By contrast, net primary productivity did not explain additional variation. Grassland, forest and arid-xeric shrubland biomes differed in their insect flight activity, with the greatest abundance in subtropical and temperate grasslands. The relationship between insect flight abundance and temperature varied across biome types. In arid-xeric shrublands and in forest biomes the temperature–abundance relationship was indirectly (through net primary productivity) or directly (in the form of precipitation) mediated by water availability. These results suggest that temperature constraints on metabolism, development, or flight activity shape macroecological patterns in ectotherm abundance. Assessing the drivers of continental-scale patterns in insect abundance and their variation across biomes is particularly important to predict insect community response to warming conditions. Global pollinator decline urgently requires effective methods to assess their trends, distribution and behaviour. Passive acoustics is a non-invasive and cost-efficient monitoring tool increasingly employed for monitoring animal communities. However, insect sounds remain highly unexplored, hindering the application of this technique for pollinators. To overcome this shortfall and support future developments, we recorded and characterized wingbeat sounds of a variety of Iberian domestic and wild bees and tested their relationship with taxonomic, morphological, behavioural and environmental traits at inter- and intra-specific levels. Using directional microphones and machine learning, we shed light on the acoustic signature of bee wingbeat sounds and their potential to be used for species identification and monitoring. Our results revealed that frequency of wingbeat sounds is negatively related with body size and environmental temperature (between-species analysis), while it is positively related with experimentally induced stress conditions (within-individual analysis). We also found a characteristic acoustic signature in the European honeybee that supported automated classification of this bee from a pool of wild bees, paving the way for passive acoustic monitoring of pollinators. Overall, these findings confirm that insect sounds during flight activity can provide insights on individual and species traits, and hence suggest novel and promising applications for this endangered animal group. An insect's wingbeat frequency is a critical determinant of its flight performance and varies by multiple orders of magnitude across Insecta. Despite potential energetic benefits for an insect that matches its wingbeat frequency to its resonant frequency, recent work has shown that moths may operate off their resonant peak. We hypothesized that across species, wingbeat frequency scales with resonance frequency to maintain favourable energetics, but with an offset in species that use frequency modulation as a means of flight control. The moth superfamily Bombycoidea is ideal for testing this hypothesis because their wingbeat frequencies vary across species by an order of magnitude, despite similar morphology and actuation. We used materials testing, high-speed videography and a model of resonant aerodynamics to determine how components of an insect's flight apparatus (stiffness, wing inertia, muscle strain and aerodynamics) vary with wingbeat frequency. We find that the resonant frequency of a moth correlates with wingbeat frequency, but resonance curve shape (described by the Weis-Fogh number) and peak location vary within the clade in a way that corresponds to frequency-dependent biomechanical demands. Our results demonstrate that a suite of adaptations in muscle, exoskeleton and wing drive variation in resonant mechanics, reflecting potential constraints on matching wingbeat and resonant frequencies. Insect flight is a complex trait involved in different behaviors, from the search for sexual partners, food, or breeding sites. Many studies have postulated the adaptive advantages of certain morphological traits in relation to increased flight capacity, such as low values of wing loading or high values of wing:thorax ratio and wing–aspect ratio. However, few studies have evaluated the relationship between variables related to flight and morphological traits in Drosophila. This work aimed to study morphological traits in males and females of two pairs of sibling species: Drosophila buzzatii Patterson and Wheeler‐Drosophila koeferae Fontdevila and Wasserman, and Drosophila melanogaster Meigen‐Drosophila simulans Sturtevant, and to analyze its relationship with flight. We detected the highest proportion of flight time in D. koepferae and D. simulans compared to D. buzzatii and D. melanogaster, respectively. Our results also revealed sexual dimorphism, with males exhibiting a higher proportion of flight time than females. Surprisingly, we did not find a general pattern to explain the relationship between morphology and the proportion of flight time because associations varied depending upon the analyses (considering all groups together or each sex‐species combination separately). Moreover, these associations explained a low percentage of variation, suggesting that other nonmorphological components related to flight, such as physiological variables, should be taken into account. This work allowed us to show the variability and complexity of an aspect of flight, suggesting that the adaptive role of the morphological traits studied might have been overestimated. One feature of animal wings is their embedded mechanosensory system that can support flight control. Insect wings are particularly interesting as they are highly deformable yet the actuation is limited to the wing base. It is established that strain sensors on insect wings can directly mediate reflexive control; however, little is known about airflow sensing by insect wings. What information can flow sensors capture and how can flow sensing benefit flight control? Here, we use the dragonfly (Sympetrum striolatum) as a model to explore the function of wing sensory bristles in the context of flight control. Combining our detailed anatomical reconstructions of both the sensor microstructures and wing architecture, we used computational fluid dynamics simulations to ask the following questions. (1) Are there strategic locations on wings that sample flow for estimating aerodynamically relevant parameters such as the local effective angle of attack? (2) Is the sensory bristle distribution on dragonfly wings optimal for flow sensing? (3) What is the aerodynamic effect of microstructures found near the sensory bristles on dragonfly wings? To make biologically useful interpretations of the echo signals from an entomological radar (a radar designed and operated to observe insects in flight), it is necessary to relate basic properties of insects (i.e. their mass, size, and form) to their radio-wave scattering characters – e.g. their radar cross-section (RCS) and its variation with aspect or beam polarization. Measurements of RCSs of live or freshly dead specimens in laboratory rigs have played an important role in establishing such relationships, but it is desirable to develop and validate methods employing numerical computation, using electromagnetic calculation software, as a more widely applicable and generalizable alternative. In such computations, the insect is represented by a model with specified size, form, and composition; composition appears as the complex relative permittivity, with both polarizability (real) and loss (imaginary) terms. As a preliminary to investigating how adequately different types of electromagnetic model perform, we have collected and analysed morphometric data on adult, flight-capable specimens of a wide range of insect species, including many known to be migratory and to fly at heights where they would be detectable by radar. Our analyses reveal that appropriate densities for prolate-spheroid models of flying insects are in the range 0.60–0.76 g cm−3, which is about half that measured for air-free samples of the solids and liquids from which insect bodies are formed. From this, appropriate permittivities for the material filling the model are found to be in the range 7–11 (real component) and 2.0–3.5 (imaginary); again, these are much lower than measured values for pure insect-body material. These results enable construction of simple electromagnetic models of insects in which both spatial dimensions and masses are accurate. Computation of model RCSs and their aspect and polarization variations, and comparison of these with laboratory measurements, will be the topic of a follow-up validation study. Previous studies on the clap–fling mechanism have predominantly focused on the initial downward and forward phases of flight in miniature insects, either during hovering or forward flight. However, this study presents the first comprehensive kinematic data of Coccinella septempunctata during climbing flight. It reveals, for the first time, that a clap-and-fling mechanism occurs during the initial upward and backward phase of the hind wings' motion. This discovery addresses the previously limited understanding of the clap-and-fling mechanism by demonstrating that, during the clap motion, the leading edges of beetle's wings come into proximity to form a figure-eight shape before rotating around their trailing edge to open into a "V" shape. By employing numerical solutions to solve Navier–Stokes (N-S) equations, we simulated both single hind wings' and double hind wings' aerodynamic conditions. Our findings demonstrate that this fling mechanism not only significantly enhances the lift coefficient by approximately 9.65% but also reduces the drag coefficient by about 1.7%, indicating an extension of the applicability range of this clap-and-fling mechanism beyond minute insect flight. Simple Summary: In this study, we explored how the wingbeat frequency of flying insects changes with air temperature. By analyzing over 300,000 insect observations using a near-infrared light sensor made during an eight-month field experiment, we observed that flying insects increase their wingbeat frequency when air temperature rises and that this trend was even more significant for insects with naturally higher wingbeat frequencies. Based on our findings, we developed a model to predict how wingbeat frequency typically changes with temperature. This model is designed to improve the precision of insect clustering, often used with entomological optical or acoustic sensors. Although it may not account for the unique responses of specific insect species to temperature variations, this empirical approach provides a general insight into the relationship between wingbeat frequency and temperature, which can be used to improve the effectiveness of insect classification from photonic or acoustic sensors. This study examines the relationship between the wingbeat frequency of flying insects and ambient temperature, leveraging data from over 302,000 insect observations obtained using a near-infrared optical sensor during an eight-month field experiment. By measuring the wingbeat frequency as well as wing and body optical cross-sections of each insect in conjunction with the ambient temperature, we identified five clusters of insects and analyzed how their average wingbeat frequencies evolved over temperatures ranging from 10 °C to 38 °C. Our findings reveal a positive correlation between temperature and wingbeat frequency, with a more pronounced increase observed at higher wingbeat frequencies. Frequencies increased on average by 2.02 Hz/°C at 50 Hz, and up to 9.63 Hz/°C at 525 Hz, and a general model is proposed. This model offers a valuable tool for correcting wingbeat frequencies with temperature, enhancing the accuracy of insect clustering by optical and acoustic sensors. While this approach does not account for species-specific responses to temperature changes, our research provides a general insight, based on all species present during the field experiment, into the intricate dynamics of insect flight behavior in relation to environmental factors. Most bats hunt insects on the wing at night using echolocation as their primary sensory modality, but nevertheless maintain complex eye anatomy and functional vision. This raises the question of how and when insectivorous bats use vision during their largely nocturnal lifestyle. Here, we test the hypothesis that the small insectivorous bat, Myotis daubentonii, relies less on echolocation, or dispenses with it entirely, as visual cues become available during challenging acoustic noise conditions. We trained five wild-caught bats to land on a spherical target in both silence and when exposed to broad-band noise to decrease echo detectability, while light conditions were manipulated in both spectrum and intensity. We show that during noise exposure, the bats were almost three times more likely to use multiple attempts to solve the task compared to in silent controls. Furthermore, the bats exhibited a Lombard response of 0.18 dB/dBnoise and decreased call intervals earlier in their flight during masking noise exposures compared to in silent controls. Importantly, however, these adjustments in movement and echolocation behaviour did not differ between light and dark control treatments showing that small insectivorous bats maintain the same echolocation behaviour when provided with visual cues under challenging conditions for echolocation. We therefore conclude that bat echolocation is a hard-wired sensory system with stereotyped compensation strategies to both target range and masking noise (i.e. Lombard response) irrespective of light conditions. In contrast, the adjustments of call intervals and movement strategies during noise exposure varied substantially between individuals indicating a degree of flexibility that likely requires higher order processing and perhaps vocal learning. Aiming to efficiently simulate the transient process of transpiration cooling with phase change and reveal the convection mechanism between fluid and porous media particles in a continuum scale, a new two-phase mixture model is developed by incorporating the local thermal non-equilibrium effect. Considering the low-pressure and high overload working conditions of hypersonic flying, the heat and mass transfer induced by capillary and inertial body forces are analyzed for sub-cooled, saturated and super-heated states of water coolant under varying saturation pressures. After the validation of the model, transient simulations for different external factors, including spatially-varied heat flux, coolant mass flux, time-dependent external pressure and aircraft acceleration are conducted. The results show that the vapor blockage patterns at the outlet are highly dependent on the injection mass flux value and the external pressure, and the reduced saturation temperature at low external pressure leads to early boiling off and vapor blockage. The motion of flying has a large influence on the cooling effect, as the inertial force could change the flow pattern of the fluid inside significantly. The comparison of the results from 2-D and 3-D simulations suggests that 3-D simulation shall be conducted for practical application of transpiration cooling, as the thermal protection efficiency may be overestimated by the 2-D results due to the assumption of an infinite width length of the porous plate. This correction notice addresses inaccuracies in the classification of prey taxa in a study on alpine salamanders. The authors have revised the categorization of prey and found that the results did not significantly change. The new analysis shows that Myriapoda and Hemiptera are the most frequently ingested prey categories. The diversity of prey items in the diet remained relatively unchanged. The scaling of the energetic cost of locomotion with body mass is well documented at the interspecific level. However, methodological restrictions limit our understanding of the scaling of flight metabolic rate (MR) in free‐flying insects. This is particularly true at the intraspecific level, where variation in body mass and flight energetics may have direct consequences for the fitness of an individual. We applied a 13C stable isotope method to investigate the scaling of MR with body mass during free‐flight in the beetle Batocera rufomaculata. This species exhibits large intraspecific variation in adult body mass as a consequence of the environmental conditions during larval growth. We show that the flight‐MR scales with body mass to the power of 0.57, with smaller conspecifics possessing up to 2.3 fold higher mass‐specific flight MR than larger ones. Whereas the scaling exponent of free‐flight MR was found to be like that determined for tethered‐flight, the energy expenditure during free‐flight was more than 2.7 fold higher than for tethered‐flight. The metabolic cost of flight should therefore be studied under free‐flight conditions, a requirement now enabled by the 13C technique described herein for insect flight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In proceeding with the advanced development of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are small flying machines, understanding the flight of insects is important because UAVs that use flight are attracting attention. The figure-eight trajectory of the wing tips is often observed in the flight of insects. In this study, we investigated the more efficient figure-eight motion patterns in generating lift during the hovering motion and the relationship between figure-eight motion and Reynolds number. For this purpose, we compared the ratios of the cycle-averaged lift coefficient to the power coefficient generated from each motion by varying the elevation motion angle, which is the rotational motion that represents the figure-eight motion, and the Reynolds number. The result showed that the motion with a smaller initial phase of the elevation motion angle ( φ e 0 ≤ 90 ° ) could generate lift more efficiently at all Reynolds numbers. To gain insights into how juvenile hormone (JH) came to regulate insect metamorphosis, we studied its function in the ametabolous firebrat, Thermobia domestica. Highest levels of JH occur during late embryogenesis, with only low levels thereafter. Loss- of- function and gain-of-function experiments show that JH acts on embryonic tissues to suppress morphogenesis and cell determination and to promote their terminal differentiation. Similar embryonic actions of JH on hemimetabolous insects with short germ band embryos indicate that JH's embryonic role preceded its derived function as the postembryonic regulator of metamorphosis. The postembryonic expansion of JH function likely followed the evolution of flight. Archaic flying insects were considered to lack metamorphosis because tiny, movable wings were evident on the thoraces of young juveniles and their positive allometric growth eventually allowed them to support flight in late juveniles. Like in Thermobia, we assume that these juveniles lacked JH. However, a postembryonic reappearance of JH during wing morphogenesis in the young juvenile likely redirected wing development to make a wing pad rather than a wing. Maintenance of JH then allowed wing pad growth and its disappearance in the mature juvenile then allowed wing differentiation. This paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) approach based on the extended disturbance observer (EDOB) for trajectory tracking of a coaxial octorotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). First, the system dynamic model is derived using Newton–Euler relations in the presence of time‐varying centre of gravity (COG); then, a two‐loop cascade structure is presented to perform the trajectory tracking task. Both loops are controlled using MPC with feedforward compensation based on the EDOB to improve disturbance rejection abilities. When the mass changes, the moment of inertia and COG are affected. The EDOB simultaneously estimates the effects of time‐varying mass, external disturbances, and parametric uncertainties in six degrees of freedom. After obtaining virtual control inputs using designed controllers, constrained control allocation is used to obtain rotors speed in a valid range. The proposed control scheme is evaluated using simulation. The simulation results show the ability of the developed control strategy in accurate trajectory tracking and stable flight in different conditions and being robust to uncertainty and disturbance. A functionally graded membrane (FGM) with a special spiral-structured cellulose acetate (CA) membrane was prepared by electrospinning under different collection distances. The membrane morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FESEM images revealed that the high concentration shows the formation of fibers with an irregular diameter, with a large diameter distribution range. The fiber collected at a short distance of 10 cm experiences the strong electrostatic force, resulting in the short flight time for the polymer jet. This causes the bending instability of the polymer jet forming the comparatively thick fiber diameters, whereas the fiber collected at 15 cm shows the presence of a smooth, homogeneous diameter. Furthermore, the water flux of the membrane was determined using 50 mL of Amicon stirred cells. The fiber collected at different distances showed diameter variation, which is used to design a special spiral structure on the membrane by auto-moving the collector between the fixed distances of 10–20 cm. This technique will reveal a new approach for the fabrication of a special spiral structure on the nanofibrous membrane for different biomedical applications from different polymers. In flapping insect wings, veins support flexible wing membranes such that the wings form feathering and cambering motions passively from large elastic deformations. These motions are essentially important in unsteady aerodynamics of insect flapping flight. Hence, the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon is an important issue in studies on insect flight. Systematic parametric studies on strong coupling between a model wing describing these elastic deformations and the surrounding fluid, which is a direct formulation of this phenomenon, will be effective for solving this issue. The purpose of this study is to develop a robust numerical framework for these systematic parametric studies. The proposed framework consists of two novel numerical methods: (1) A fully parallelized solution method using both algebraic splitting and semi‐implicit scheme for monolithic fluid–structure interaction (FSI) equation systems, which is numerically stable for a wide range of properties such as solid‐to‐fluid mass ratios and large body motions, and large elastic deformations. (2) A structural mechanics model for insect flapping wings using pixel modeling (pixel model wing), which is combined with explicit node‐positioning to reduce computational costs significantly in controlling fluid meshes. The validity of the proposed framework is demonstrated for some benchmark problems and a dynamically scaled model incorporating actual insect data. Finally, from a parametric study for the pixel model wing flapped in fluid with a wide range of solid‐to‐fluid mass ratios, we find a FSI mechanism of feathering and cambering motions in flapping insect wings. BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) has proven to be an effective approach in managing the population of major invasive pests. Our previous studies showed that irradiation of Cydia pomonella males at a dosage of 366 Gy X‐rays resulted in complete sterility. However, the mating competitiveness of sterilized males is significantly compromised, which can be attributed to a decline in their ability to fly. RESULTS: In this study, we examined the flight patterns of both male and female adults of C. pomonella. The results revealed significant variations in the average flight speed of both genders at different stages of maturity, with females displaying longer flight duration and covering greater distances. Effect of irradiation on the flight performance of 3‐day‐old male moths was further evaluated, as they demonstrated the longest flight distance. The findings indicated a significant decrease in flight distance, duration, and average speed, due to wing deformities caused by irradiation, which also limited the dispersal distance of moths in orchards, as indicated by the mark‐and‐recapture assay. Reverse‐transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed a down‐regulation of flight‐related genes such as Flightin, myosin heavy chain, and Distal‐less following radiation exposure. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that X‐ray irradiation at a radiation dose of 366 Gy has a detrimental effect on the flight ability of male C. pomonella adults. These insights not only contribute to a better understanding of how radiation sterilization diminishes the mating competitiveness of male moths, but also aid in the development and improvement of SIT practices for the effective control of C. pomonella. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. Gaining the ability to fly actively was a ground-breaking moment in insect evolution, providing an unprecedented advantage over other arthropods. Nevertheless, active flight was a costly innovation, requiring the development of wings and flight muscles, the provision of sufficient energetic resources, and a complex flight control system. Although wings, flight muscles, and the energetic budget of insects have been intensively studied in the last decades, almost nothing is known regarding the flight-control devices of many crucial insect groups, especially beetles (Coleoptera). Here, we conducted a phylogenetic-informed analysis of flight-related mechanosensors in 28 species of bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae, Platypodinae), an economically and ecologically important group of insects characterized by striking differences in dispersal abilities. The results indicated that beetle flight apparatus is equipped with different functional types of mechanosensors, including strain- and flow-encoding sensilla. We found a strong effect of allometry on the number of mechanosensors, while no effect of relative wing size (a proxy of flight investment) was identified. Our study constitutes the first step to understanding the drivers and constraints of the evolution of flight-control devices in Coleoptera, including bark beetles. Background: Insects have evolved complex visual systems and display an astonishing range of adaptations for diverse ecological niches. Species of Drosophila melanogaster subgroup exhibit extensive intra- and interspecific differences in compound eye size. These differences provide an excellent opportunity to better understand variation in insect eye structure and the impact on vision. Here we further explored the difference in eye size between D. mauritiana and its sibling species D. simulans. Results: We confirmed that D. mauritiana have rapidly evolved larger eyes as a result of more and wider ommatidia than D. simulans since they recently diverged approximately 240,000 years ago. The functional impact of eye size, and specifically ommatidia size, is often only estimated based on the rigid surface morphology of the compound eye. Therefore, we used 3D synchrotron radiation tomography to measure optical parameters in 3D, predict optical capacity, and compare the modelled vision to in vivo optomotor responses. Our optical models predicted higher contrast sensitivity for D. mauritiana, which we verified by presenting sinusoidal gratings to tethered flies in a flight arena. Similarly, we confirmed the higher spatial acuity predicted for Drosophila simulans with smaller ommatidia and found evidence for higher temporal resolution. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that even subtle differences in ommatidia size between closely related Drosophila species can impact the vision of these insects. Therefore, further comparative studies of intra- and interspecific variation in eye morphology and the consequences for vision among other Drosophila species, other dipterans and other insects are needed to better understand compound eye structure–function and how the diversification of eye size, shape, and function has helped insects to adapt to the vast range of ecological niches. Simple Summary: We conducted a study on flightin, a vital protein found in insect flight muscles, with a specific focus on the social wasp Vespa basalis, which is a dangerous hornet species. Using sequence analysis techniques, we successfully obtained an 1189 bp cDNA sequence encoding the flightin protein consisting of 150 amino acids. According to our analysis, the molecular weight and isoelectric point of the amino acid sequence are 18.05 kDa and 5.84, respectively. The protein lacks a transmembrane topology structure, and we identified four patterns of functional sites. Conducting phylogenetic analysis on 38 species, including 8 Vespidae species, revealed a close evolutionary relationship between Vespa basalis and Vespa mandarinia. These findings warrant further investigation, especially considering the contrasting information obtained from the analysis of mitochondrial sequences. Flight is a complex physiological process requiring precise coordination of muscular contraction. A key protein in insect flight is flightin, which plays an integral role in the flight muscles. This research sought to evaluate the flight competence of the social wasp V. basalis by characterizing the molecular components involved. Our study focused on Vespa basalis, one of the most dangerous hornet species, utilizing PCR to obtain a partial cDNA sequence of the flightin protein. We then employed phylogenetic and sequence analysis to gain insights into this protein in flight-related adaptations. The cDNA has an 1189-base pair sequence including an open reading frame (453 bp) encoding 150 amino acids. Analyzing the deduced amino acid sequence using an online tool revealed a molecular weight of 18.05 kDa, an isoelectric point of 5.84, four functional site patterns, and no transmembrane topology. We constructed a phylogenetic tree of flightin based on 38 species. Our analysis indicated that V. basalis is most closely related to V. mandarinia; this alignment is consistent with their similar aggressive behavior, but their evolutionary relationship, based on mitochondrial sequences, presents a contrast. These initial findings on the flightin gene in V. basalis lay the groundwork for future functional studies to elucidate its specific role in flight adaptations and explore its potential as a target for pest management strategies. Insects produce a variety of highly acrobatic maneuvers in flight owing to their ability to achieve various wing-stroke trajectories. Among them, beetles can quickly change their flight velocities and make agile turns. In this work, we report a newly discovered phasic wing-tip-folding phenomenon and its aerodynamic basis in beetles. The wings' flapping trajectories and aerodynamic forces of the tethered flying beetles were recorded simultaneously via motion capture cameras and a force sensor, respectively. The results verified that phasic active spanwise-folding and deployment (PASFD) can exist during flapping flight. The folding of the wing-tips of beetles significantly decreased aerodynamic forces without any changes in flapping frequency. Specifically, compared with no-folding-and-deployment wings, the lift and forward thrust generated by bilateral-folding-and-deployment wings reduced by 52.2% and 63.0%, respectively. Moreover, unilateral-folding-and-deployment flapping flight was found, which produced a lateral force (8.65 mN). Therefore, a micro-flapping-wing mechanism with PASFD was then designed, fabricated, and tested in a motion capture and force measurement system to validate its phasic folding functions and aerodynamic performance under different operating frequencies. The results successfully demonstrated a significant decrease in flight forces. This work provides valuable insights for the development of flapping-wing micro-air-vehicles with high maneuverability. Colour polymorphisms have long served as model systems in evolutionary studies and continue to inform about processes involved in the origin and dynamics of biodiversity. Modern sequencing tools allow for evaluating whether phenotypic differences between morphs reflect genetic differentiation rather than developmental plasticity, and for investigating whether polymorphisms represent intermediate stages of diversification towards speciation. We investigated phenotypic and genetic differentiation between two colour morphs of the butterfly Fabriciana adippe using a combination of ddRAD‐sequencing and comparisons of body size, colour patterns and optical properties of bright wing spots. The silvery‐spotted adippe form had larger and darker wings and reflected UV light, while the yellow cleodoxa form displayed more green scales and reflected very little UV, showcasing that they constitute distinct and alternative integrated phenotypes. Genomic analyses revealed genetic structuring according to source population, and to colour morph, suggesting that the phenotypic differentiation reflects evolutionary modifications. We report 17 outlier loci associated with colour morph, including ultraviolet‐sensitive visual pigment (UVRh1), which is associated with intraspecific communication and mate choice in butterflies. Together with the demonstration that the wings of the adippe (but essentially not the cleodoxa) morph reflect UV light, that UV reflectance is higher in females than males and that morphs differ in wing size, this suggests that these colour morphs might represent genetically integrated phenotypes, possibly adapted to different microhabitats. Simple Summary: Insects that undergo complete metamorphosis, collectively known as Holometabola, are the most successful lineage of living organism, including about 830,000 species. Understanding the intricate relationships among the major groups of holometabolous insects is a critical task in systematic biology, particularly given their immense diversity. This research analyzed the wing base structure of Holometabola using comparative morphology to further clarify several crucial relationship nodes within Holometabola. Morphological data were selected from both the forewing base and hindwing base, comprising fifty-three discrete characters. Many phylogenetic relationship nodes among Holometabola were recovered exclusively using the wing base structure. Our research further highlights the efficacy of wing base morphology data in understanding insect phylogeny and evolution. Phylogenetic relationships among Holometabola have been the subject of controversy. The value of the wing base structure in phylogenetic analysis has been demonstrated but remains largely underexplored and scarce in studies of Holometabola. We studied the phylogenetic relationships among Holometabola (excluding Siphonaptera), focusing exclusively on wing base structure. Cladistic assessments were conducted using 53 morphological data points derived from the bases of both the forewing and hindwing. The results of wing base data revealed a sister relationship between Hymenoptera and remaining orders. The sister-group relationships between Strepsiptera and Coleoptera, Mecoptera and Diptera, Trichoptera and Lepidoptera, and Neuropterida and Coleopterida were corroborated. Simple Summary: Phonotaxis is the movement of an animal towards an acoustic signal. In crickets, males generate the calling signals, thereby attracting females and other males. The calling signal is the only means of distant communication in crickets. Reception of the calling signal by the female may occur during flight, and flight often precedes copulation. We had previously found that a prior flight significantly enhanced subsequent terrestrial phonotaxis in female crickets. It is clear that some neurochemical mechanisms are responsible for the enhancement of phonotaxis after a flight. The purpose of our research was to elucidate these mechanisms. The most likely targets to test were the octopaminergic and serotonergic systems. It is known that the concentration of octopamine in the cricket hemolymph increases during flight, and that serotonin is involved in the modulation of social behavior in many animals, including insects. Using pharmacological manipulations, we show that the increase in the serotonin synthesis enhances phonotaxis. The 5-HT content in thoracic ganglia was significantly higher in flyers in comparison to the control group. The role of octopamine in phonotactic behavior is more complex and controversial. We demonstrate that octopamine suppresses rather than activates the central mechanisms associated with phonotaxis. We make suggestions about why serotonin may enhance phonotaxis and examine possible reasons for the ambiguous role of the octopaminergic system in phonotactic behavior. We have recently shown that experience of flight remarkably enhanced subsequent terrestrial phonotaxis in females in response to the male calling song. Here, we elucidated the possible roles of octopamine and serotonin in the enhancing effect of flying on phonotactic behavior. Octopamine is known to be released into the hemolymph during flight in insects; however, the octopamine receptor antagonist epinastine did not abolish the effects of flight in our study. On the contrary, the drug significantly potentiated the influence of flying on phonotactic behavior. The octopamine receptor agonist chlordimeform, at a concentration of 2 mM, which was previously found to activate aggression in crickets, dramatically reduced the phonotactic response. However, at a 10-times-lower dose, chlordimeform produced a light but significant decrease in the time that females took to reach the source of the calling song. A similar effect was produced by octopamine itself, which hardly passes the blood–brain barrier in insects. The effect of flight was completely abolished in female crickets treated with alpha-methyl tryptophan (AMTP). AMPT suppresses the synthesis of serotonin, decreasing its content in the nervous systems of insects, including crickets. An activation of the serotonin synthesis with 5-hydroxytryptophan mimicked the effect of flight by increasing the number of visits to and the time spent in the zone near the source of the calling song. The 5-HT content in the third thoracic ganglion was significantly higher in flyers compared to the control group. In contrast, no changes in the octopamine level were observed in the third thoracic ganglion, which is known to play a crucial role in decision-making involved in intraspecific interactions. Therefore, the results suggest that although octopamine is known to be released into the hemolymph during flight, it is likely to inhibit rather than activate the central mechanisms related to phonotaxis. The weak facilitating effect of a low dose of chlordimeform can be attributed to the activation of peripheral octopaminergic receptors. Our results suggest that the serotoninergic system may contribute to the facilitation of female phonotactic behavior by flying. We suggest that both flying and serotonin enhance sexual motivation in females and, by these means, impact their behavioral response to the male calling song. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of insect flight is important for conservation and sustainability efforts, as predicting insect dispersal can aid management programmes in tackling economic and ecological harm from, for example, invasive species. Flight mills are invaluable tools for measuring the factors of insect flight under laboratory conditions, as they lower several technical and financial barriers to conduct experiments. It is especially difficult, however, to make assumptions about the energetic cost of tethered flights conducted using different tethers, or even on different flight mills, due to the mechanical variability of the bearing friction and air resistance of the rotating assembly. This additional uncertainty necessitates a larger number of replicates for any given standard of statistical confidence. By characterising flight mill friction, this uncertainty can both be reduced in magnitude and assigned a specific, well‐defined numerical value. We present a simple methodology to characterise this friction through dynamic calibration of the flight mill, at a high statistical confidence. This study uses videography of a flight mill undergoing free velocity decay due to friction, using an in‐house developed software to extract angular velocity from video data. However, the technique is readily adaptable to other measurement techniques. Using the velocity, alongside the mass moment of inertia of the flight mill, allows us to determine the rotational friction coefficient. This friction coefficient provides precise measurements of thrust production, and therefore the energy expenditure of flight, by the tethered insect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
