Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are widely employed to treat respiratory diseases, offering numerous advantages such as high dose capacity and stable formulations. However, they usually face challenges in achieving sufficient pulmonary drug delivery and minimizing excessive oropharyngeal deposition. This review provides a new viewpoint to address these challenges by focusing on the role of swirling flow, a crucial yet under-researched aspect that induces strong turbulence. In the review, we comprehensively discuss both key classic designs (tangential inlet, swirling chamber, grid mesh, and mouthpiece) and innovative designs in inhalers, exploring how the induced swirling flow initiates powder dispersion and promotes delivery efficiency. Valuable design considerations to effectively coordinate inhalers with formulations and patients are also provided. It is highlighted that the delicate manipulation of swirling flow is essential to maximize benefits. By emphasizing the role of swirling flow and its potential application, this review offers promising insights for advancing DPI technology and optimizing therapeutic outcomes in inhaled therapy. In the present study, the energy, exergy, environmental, and economic (4-E) analyses of Rajai's combined cycle power plant with applying environmentally friendly technologies have been performed. To this end, three scenarios have been considered: (1) without auxiliary systems; (2) with modified guide vane system; (3) integrated guide vane system and inlet air fogging. The angle was increased from 84 $$^\circ $$ ∘ to 86 $$^\circ $$ ∘ to modify the guide vane opening angle of the compressor. Besides, inlet air fogging is used to reduce the compressor's inlet temperature. The results show that the highest exergy destruction ($$\~34\% $$ \~ 34 %) occurred in the combustion chamber. The corresponding values for HRSG and gas turbine are 21% and 26%, respectively. With a modified guide vane system, scenario 2, the cycle's first law efficiency is enhanced by 0.56% compared to scenario 1. In addition, in scenario 3, the second law efficiency increased by 0.67%, and the exergy destruction decreased by 0.85%. By using the proposed system, an increased income of $${h_i}$$ h i .85 per megawatt-hour was gained. This study experimentally investigated the temporal evolution of the scour parameters downstream of a trapezoidal piano key weir. The densimetric Froude number (Frd50) in the range of 0.39–0.57 and the relative vertical distance of the sediment bed level to the weir toe (Δz/P) in the range of 0.025–0.5 were taken into consideration. In general, with an increase in Frd50, the scouring rate, maximum scour depth, scour hole area and scour hole volume enhanced over time. The increases in the scour parameters were greater at the initial stages of the tests. About 87, 80, 65 and 70% of the maximum scour depth, weir toe scour, scour hole area and scour hole volume occurred within the first 20% of the durations of the tests, respectively. Any increase in Frd50 and Δz/P augmented the scour depth at the weir toe. The results also indicated that the distance of maximum scour depth from the weir increased for greater values of Δz/P and Frd50. The amounts of scour downstream of the outlet keys were greater than those downstream of the inlet keys. The trend of variations of the longitudinal bed profiles remained nearly unchanged over time. Critical heat flux (CHF) is one of the most concerned thermal hydraulic phenomena in reactor safety analysis. It involves complex two-phase flow heat transfer mechanism, and has not been fully understood, so the prediction of critical heat flux mainly depends on CHF correlations obtained under limited experimental conditions. At present, CHF correlations are generally developed with pressure, mass flux and quality as key independent variables. And correspondingly, the test matrix of a CHF test consists of the above parameters. However, it is impossible to perform CHF tests accurately according to the predetermined quality. In CIAE, a CHF experimental research of a 5 χ 5 uniformly heated rod bundle has been carried out. In the experiment, the inlet temperature of the test section was directly taken as a parameter in the test matrix. The CHF data were achieved by stepwise increasing the heating power. The test conditions covered the pressure of 2.8-15.5 MPa, the mass flux of 845-3533 kg/(m2-s), and the inlet temperature of 100°C-300°C. The test data have been analyzed to obtain the thermal-hydraulic parameter influences on CHF by taking the inlet temperature as a variable. The results indicated that, within the test condition range, under the same inlet temperatures, CHF was hardly affected by pressure, and linearly increased with the increasing mass flux. With the increase of inlet temperature, the enhancement of CHF with the increasing mass flux gradually weakens. And CHF was linearly decreased with the increasing inlet temperature under the same mass flux. By contrast, the parameter influences on CHF were more complex by taking the local quality as a variable. According to the research, it can be concluded that, it has an advantage of simplifying the CHF correlation form to take the inlet temperature of the test section as a variable parameter. The unsteady flow field in the aerostatic bearing always induces micro-vibrations, which are severely detrimental to the stability and precision of the bearing. Extensive research has been conducted on the mechanism of micro-vibration, but a consensus has not yet been reached. To this end, the large eddy simulation (LES) and proper orthogonal decomposition methods were employed to analyze the flow field of an annular aerostatic bearing in this paper. A mechanism for inducing micro-vibration and the identification of a novel flow behavior were ultimately revealed. First, the accuracy of our LES method has been validated through quantitative comparison with experimental data. Then, the mode decomposition has been conducted to analyze the flow field under various gas supply pressures. The results demonstrate that when the supply pressure Ps = 0.4 MPa, the micro-vibration is dominated by a pair of adjacent large-scale vortices with low frequencies in the recess. However, when Ps = 0.5 and 0.6 MPa, the convection and shearing processes near the orifice outlet and the rectangular recess inlet become intense, resulting in the displacement of large-scale vortices. Eventually, the small-scale high-frequency pressure fluctuation structures have been also observed, which are closely related to the convection process within recess. With the increase in gas supply pressure, the high-frequency pressure fluctuations at the circular recess outlet gradually diminish, while those at the orifice outlet emerge and gradually enlarge. Meanwhile, the mode dominant frequency is transferred from around 200 kHz to around 1000 kHz. The energy fraction of the high-frequency pressure fluctuations is also greatly increased. The RBCC (rocket-based combined-cycle) engine integrates a rocket engine into the flow passage of the ramjet engine, thereby significantly broadening the operating range and becoming one of the potential solutions for the reusable space transportations. The embedded rocket, as one of the core components of an RBCC engine, is strongly coupled to other components, such as the inlet and combustor, and can induce significant impacts on the inlet start behaviors. For the stable operation of the RBCC inlet, the start/unstart hysteresis characteristics and the reliable start boundaries driven by embedded rocket are experimentally and numerically studied. The results show that due to the function of embedded rocket jet, the inlet start/unstart hysteresis range of Mach number rises from Mach 1.79–1.87 to 1.85–1.90, and the back pressure hysteresis range changes from Pc/P∞ of 3.9–5.8 to 4.7–5.8. Meanwhile, during the increasing and decreasing process of the embedded rocket pressure, the inlet undergoes a transition between start and unstart, accompanied by hysteresis phenomena as well. Furthermore, three different control strategies are proposed for the start of RBCC inlet. Similar to the traditional ramjet inlets, the RBCC inlet can self-/re-start by reducing the back pressure. Particularly, owing to the synergistic effect of embedded rocket jet and back pressure, the RBCC inlet can self-/re-start by reducing the embedded rocket pressure from Procket/P∞ = 58 to 39 in the "embedded rocket dominated" cases, while the inlet self-/re-start can be achieved by increasing the rocket pressure from Procket/P∞ = 20 to 39 in the "back pressure dominated" cases. Cavitation in tubes is a common occurrence in nature and engineering applications. Previous studies of cavitation bubble dynamics mainly consider bubbles in stagnant-water tubes, but the dynamics of cavitation bubbles in tubes with flow is not clear. This study investigates the dynamics of cavitation bubbles in tubes with flow by numerical simulations. The results show that, unlike bubbles in stagnant-water tubes, bubbles under the combined effects of water inflow and tube wall confinement exhibit asymmetric behavior along the axis of the tube. The inflow suppresses the development of the bubble interface near the tube inlet, causing that side of the interface to move with the inflow. In contrast, the expansion and contraction of the bubble and the generation of liquid jets occur on the side near the outlet. This feature results in significant asymmetry in the bubble interface; therefore, we introduce a skewness parameter to characterize the difference in length between the left and right parts of the bubble during the bubble evolution. The evolution of the bubble significantly affects the mass flow rate at the outlet of the tube, and even leads to backflow during the bubble contraction process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For electric vehicle (EV) charging in North America, three AC connectors are standardized, resulting in a proliferation of charging stations which can only charge one of the three types of EV. We propose a "Universal EV Outlet" that works with an EV "carry along" charging cable—one end of the cable has a connector specific to that user's EV, the other a plug for the Universal EV Outlet. This proposal does not interfere with, nor require change to, any existing charging stations. It does not require any new types of inlets on EVs. The components are already standardized. Eight use cases are examined to illustrate the advantages, and some limitations, of the Universal EV Outlet. The use cases illustrate how this solution: resolves the problem of multiple AC charging connectors, makes today's "EV Ready" building codes more adaptable, lowers capital and maintenance costs, creates a solution to curbside and urban charging, increases energy efficiency, enables higher power three-phase AC charging for heavy vehicles, and facilitates use of EVs for building backup power and for vehicle-to-grid. Finally, we propose a standards-based active cable used with the Universal EV Outlet, which would allow fast and secure EV identification for curbside or other shared charging locations, usable today without modifications to current EVs. AbstractThis article studies the effects of multi-field coupling on the S-duct by a self-developed fluid-solid-thermal bi-directional coupling code. The flow field inside the S-duct is complex with various vortices as the airflow turns. The results indicate that the total pressure recovery coefficient and the total pressure distortion index (DI) change rapidly at the beginning and reach a steady state at about 100s. The σ decreases by 12%, and the DI increases by 2% compared to the starting point. Structural deformation, size of separation zone, and wall temperature changes over time, and stabilizes around 100 s. The deformation mainly occurs at the outlet, with a maximum displacement of 3.65 mm for up-warping and 4.60 mm for expansion. The values of the total pressure recovery coefficient with S-ducts of bias distance with 20, 40, and 60 mm drop by 2.5%, 8.6%, and 12.1%, and the values of the total pressure distortion index increases with S-ducts of bias distance with 20, 40, and 60 mm increase by 10.8%, 15.1%, and 1.7%. The S-duct with a larger aspect ratio has larger separation zones and a smaller total pressure recovery coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are an innovative option for power generation. This type of reactor offers numerous benefits and uses. The implementation of Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated fuel (FCM) in an integral pressurized water reactor (iPWR) with SMR characteristics has been studied previously. FCM has excellent thermal and irradiation resistance properties and is composed of a SiC matrix with dispersed TRISO fuel particles. To perform the thermo-hydraulic analysis of the core of an SMR using FCM as fuel, a computational model was built using CFD codes. The model describes a typical fuel assembly of the reactor and the main thermo-hydraulic parameters are calculated for the increased power values of 65, 80, and 100 MWt. Estimating singular pressure losses for multi-stage obstacles in pressurized hydraulic ducts is a challenging task. An experimental study was conducted in a closed-loop hydrodynamic tunnel to characterize the pressure losses of a system consisting of a porous fibrous foam placed in front of a bar rack. The pressure losses of different foam–rack configurations were measured over a range of inlet velocities in order to highlight the mutual influence of their characteristics on the flow. The interdependence between the two stages has been evidenced by both the experimental results and additional numerical simulations using RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations) simulations with a k- ω SST turbulent closure model. The pressure losses were first modeled using two approaches based on the assumption of either independence or full dependence between the stages. The respective advantages and limitations of these approaches led to an improved analytical formula that considers the transition of the flow from the porous foam to the bar rack. By taking into account an empirical transition factor, the proposed model improves the head loss prediction for all tested configurations, with an average relative error between the formula and experimental results less than that of the two simpler approaches. [Display omitted] As lyophilization continues to be a critical step in the manufacturing of sensitive biopharmaceuticals, challenges often arise during the scale up to commercial scale or the transfer from one manufacturing site to another. While data from the small-scale development of the lyophilization cycle is abundant it is typically much more difficult to extract important information from commercial scale cycles, due to the lack of process analytical technologies available on the commercial line. There is often a reluctance to include wireless temperature or pressure probes during GMP operations due to the additional contamination risk, and retrofitting equipment such as the TDLAS can be prohibitively expensive. Further, as products become more advanced, the cost of consuming the product or even the availability of material may limit the opportunities to run commercial scale trials. This paper presents two novel methods to garner critical cycle information to allow for the evaluation of cycle performance without the need for expensive analytical equipment, costly revalidation and line downtime. Critically, this can be achieved using commonly available temperature and capacitance probes on existing commercial scale equipment. The first method is a calorimetric method, based on quantifying the differences in heat transfer liquid temperature between the shelf inlet and shelf outlet. This change in temperature results from the on-going sublimation, an endo-thermic reaction occurring during lyophilization. The second method uses the differential pressure between the chamber and condenser resulting from the vapor flow from vial to condenser during primary drying. The cell structure of a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) is made up of thousands of individual cells. Although the symmetric square cell structure of the GPF is commonly used internationally, several cell designs have been proposed to reduce the pressure drop in the GPF trapping process. The aim of this paper was to use AVL-Fire software to establish GPF models of different cell structures, mainly including the symmetric square cell structure, asymmetric square cell structure, and symmetric hexagonal cell structure, and analyze the GPF pressure drop characteristics of different cell structures according to the carrier structural parameters and altitude. The results show that compared with the pressure drop of the symmetric square cell structure, the pressure drop of the asymmetric cell structure with inlet/outlet side length ratios ranging from 1.1 to 1.4 is decreased by 4.61%, 9.07%, 12.19%, and 13.22%, respectively, and the pressure drop of the symmetric hexagonal cell structure is decreased by 33.17%. Both asymmetric and symmetric hexagonal cell structure GPFs can decrease the pressure drop during trapping by increasing the cell density. From 200 CPSI to 300 CPSI, the pressure drop of the asymmetric cell structure with inlet/outlet side length ratios ranging from 1.1 to 1.4 is decreased by 20.43%, 20.53%, 20.39%, and 18.56%, respectively, and the pressure drop of the symmetric hexagonal cell structure is decreased by 18.70%. The pressure drop values of GPFs with asymmetric and symmetric hexagonal cell structures show an increasing trend with an increasing filter wall thickness and inlet/outlet plug length. The pressure drop values of GPFs with asymmetric and symmetric hexagonal cell structures show an increasing trend with an increasing altitude, and the larger the inlet/outlet ratio, the more significant the increase in the pressure drop. Installing a pressure regulator for lateral (PRL) on a cost-effective non-pressure compensating drip tape inlet can greatly reduce system investment while ensuring system uniformity and safety. This approach plays a critical role in achieving low-cost, scalable precision irrigation systems in developing countries. Once the PRL is installed, it alters the hydraulic characteristics of the system. The lack of comprehensive evaluation standards for PRL that consider both irrigation uniformity requirements and PRL characteristics is impeding the widespread adoption and application of this technology. In this article, a comprehensive evaluation system for the PRL is established through a combination of theoretical deduction and field measurements. The main conclusions are presented as follows: (1) A comprehensive evaluation index is proposed for the hydraulic performance of the PRL, which considers both single-factor influences and multifactor influences such as manufacturing deviation, inlet pressure, and flow rate. (2) A statistical relationship was established between the comprehensive evaluation indices for PRL (CV) and irrigation uniformity (CU). The CV should be less than 10% for a CU above 90% and less than 17% for a CU above 85%. The double‐layer porous media burner is considered as an effective way to realize stable lean‐burn. In order to quickly achieve a stable combustion state in a double‐layer porous media burner, this work investigated the dynamic characteristics of methane/air premixed combustion in a bench‐scale double‐layer porous media burnspanning from ignition to stable combustion and ultimately flameout. The experimental results indicate that regulating the equivalence ratio and the inlet velocity enables the establishment of a stable flame front and the φ = 0.75 and the Vin = 0.20 m/s are the appropriate start‐up conditions. The average propagation velocity of the combustion wave variation along the axial direction and ranged approximately from −0.022 to −0.078 mm/s. Moreover, the transition time to a stable combustion state is reduced by nearly 47.14% as the equivalence ratio increases from 0.60 to 0.70. During start‐up stage, there are significant fluctuations in CO and NOx concentrations, but both emissions remain low during steady combustion state, with the maximum concentrations of 37.5 and 40.2 mg/m3, respectively. Furthermore, the porous media combustion exhibits a pronounced re‐ignition capacity. At higher equivalence ratios, longer interruptions of premixed gas are allowed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Air can have an adverse effect on the performance of an aero-engine lubrication system. A numerical analysis was conducted to explore the influence of inlet void fraction and pipe layout on the characteristics of oil-gas two-phase flow in a 90° elbow. The pipes were arranged horizontally and vertically with inlet void fractions of 0.05-0.15. The laws governing flow velocity, void fraction, and pressure along the pipe were determined separately. The results revealed the formation of large-scale vortices with high gas volume fractions inside both types of elbows, which exacerbate oil-gas separation and cause additional head loss. The maximum pressure drop was observed at approximately one pipe diameter downstream of the elbow outlet, which initially increases with the inlet void fraction and then gradually stabilizes. Asymmetric secondary flow vortices in the horizontal elbow were found to enhance oil-gas separation and accelerate lubricating oil to greater extent than in a vertical elbow under the same conditions. Consequently, the maximum pressure drop caused by flowing through the horizontal elbow is higher than that in the vertical elbow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The process of smelting non‐ferrous metals results in significant emissions of flue gas that contains sulfur dioxide (SO 2$$ {}_2 $$), which is very harmful to the environment. Through precise control of converter inlet temperature, it is feasible to enhance the conversion ratio of SO 2$$ {}_2 $$ and simultaneously mitigate environmental pollution by generating acid from flue gas. Because of the high degree of uncertainty in smelting process, converter inlet temperature is challenging to regulate and controller frequently needs updating. To improve control performance and decrease controller update times, an event‐triggered neural network model predictive control (ETNMPC) strategy is proposed. First, long short‐term memory (LSTM) prediction model and model predictive controller are developed. Second, it is decided whether to update the existing controller by designing an event‐triggered mechanism. Finally, using real data from a copper facility in Jiangxi Province, the temperature control experiment of converter inlet is carried out. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ETNMPC outperforms conventional time‐triggered method in terms of control performance, greatly lowers the times of controller updates, and significantly lowers computation costs and communication burden. Many UAVs today have an S-bend inlet for the sake of stealth; however, the majority of them have a relatively gentle transition of the flow channel. This study presents an experimental investigation of the aerodynamic performance and swirl flow characteristics of a UAV inlet with double 90° bends, which is also integrated with an aircraft fuselage as well as a volute. The influences of angle of attack, sideslip angle, AIP Mach number and freestream speed are explored in detail. The influences of the deflectors installed ahead of the first 90° bend of the inlet and the baffle installed at the bottom of the volute are revealed. It is found that both the deflectors and the baffle are beneficial in enhancing the aerodynamic performance of the inlet and alleviating the intensity of the swirl flow inside the volute. Conventional forward bleed slots reduce the hypersonic inlet starting Mach number but suffer from excessive flow leakage after restart. This paper proposes a novel reverse bleed slot design method for curved axisymmetric inlets of a solid-fuel scramjet. Leveraging the Kantrowitz criterion and detailed flow analysis, the method optimizes bleed slot placement, number, area, and angle. Results show superior aerodynamic performance by placing slots in the non-starting region of the internal compression section, considering both unstarted flow and separation bubble dynamics during restart. Each bleed slot area is calculated successively down-stream based on the Kantrowitz criterion. Finally, the effects of bleed slot angle have been extensively studied. The key inlet performance reaches its optimum at a slot angle of approximately 130°, achieving a significant reduction in the starting Mach number (from 4.80 to 3.65) and a 50% decrease in bleed flow rate compared to the forward slot design. The paper presents an analysis of the performance of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, which is equipped with a flow field design featuring dual inlets and outlets, while operating under conditions of excess stoichiometry. These experiments were conducted using a fuel cell system connected to a station that allowed for the precise adjustment of gas flow rates. During the initial phase of experimentation, various proportions of excess oxygen were systematically applied, while maintaining constant hydrogen flow rates of 80 mL/min and 100 mL/min. Particularly noteworthy, for the case of a 100 mL/min hydrogen gas flow rate and the optimized excess oxygen proportion of 150%, further experiments were undertaken to ascertain the ideal humidification conditions. The outcomes of these experiments revealed that a hydrogen gas flow rate of 100 mL/min consistently outperformed the 80 mL/min flow rate in terms of fuel cell performance. Moreover, it was observed that the introduction of excess oxygen significantly improved performance, up to a 50% oxygen proportion for the 80 mL/min hydrogen flow rate and up to a 150% proportion for the 100 mL/min hydrogen flow rate. One intriguing observation pertained to the influence of humidification. Specifically, it was found that the utilization of a humidification temperature of 100°C, or the absence of humidification altogether, resulted in notably diminished power output. In contrast, intermediate humidification temperatures of 60°C, 70°C, 80°C, and 90°C consistently yielded identical maximum power points (MPP) when combined with a 150% excess oxygen supply and a hydrogen flow rate of 100 mL/min. This groundbreaking study introduces a scientifically robust method for assessing internal heat generation in shallow, unsaturated aquifers, highlighting the intricate interplay between internal heat, thermal diffusivity, and hydraulic flux. The research pioneers a novel approach employing time‐frequency spectral analysis to address challenges posed by conventional methods that rely solely on prescribed thermal diffusivity and hydraulic flux for evaluating internal heat over time. Rooted in a solid theoretical framework supported by meticulous temperature and heat flux observations, the method adeptly incorporates the concept of an unknown internal heat. The study systematically explores three distinct boundary conditions, showcasing versatility: one with fixed temperatures at the inlet and outlet, another with known temperature at the inlet and no heat flux at the outlet, and a third with a prescribed inlet temperature and constrained outlet heat flux. The estimation of internal heat, coupled with prescribed thermal diffusivity and hydraulic flux, harnesses in‐situ temperature and heat flux spectra through an innovative inverse stochastic spectral approach. A notable feature of this research lies in its ability to strategically handle various parameters, including prescribed thermal diffusivity, hydraulic flux, variations in target depth, significant frequency components, and boundary conditions. The variation assessment findings emphasize the diverse range when predicting internal heat generation based on prescribed thermal diffusivity and hydraulic flux. The optimization of film-unloading and film–soil separation components can effectively improve the residual film unloading rate and reduce impurity content. So, the DEM models of soil and residual film were established and the suspension and flow characteristics under fluid action were analyzed based on the CFD—DEM coupling simulation in this article. The matching parameters of the film-unloading and film-lifting device were optimized with the Box–Behnken test. When the wind velocity was between 1.65 and 10.54 m · s − 1 , the film–soil separation effect was the best, with a film–impurity separation rate of 96.6%. The optimized parameter combination of the film-unloading device and film-lifting device is A = 9°, B = 40 mm, and C = 40 mm (A, B, and C represent the angle between the teeth and the normal of the air inlet, the minimum distance between the teeth and the air inlet, and the width of the air inlet, respectively). With the optimized parameter, the best film unloading effect is achieved, the minimum wind velocity of film unloading is 2.6 m · s − 1 . This article provides theoretical and simulation methods for assessing the flow characteristics of flexible particles and parameter optimization of air suction devices, which is conducive to the high-purity recovery of residual film. To address the challenges of indoor mold in southern China, this study designed and constructed an innovative experimental system to investigate mold growth in buildings under the combined influence of multiple factors. Using Fluent simulation (Ansys Fluent 19.0), we designed a suitably sized experimental chamber to realistically replicate the effects of factors such as temperature, humidity, and air velocity on mold growth. After establishing and fine-tuning the experimental system, we conducted two preliminary experiments, successfully validating the feasibility of our setup. Additionally, we observed that in a high-temperature, high-humidity environment of 28 °C and 80% relative humidity, the mold growth rate in the experimental chamber increased with the rise in inlet air velocity. The supersonic–supersonic ejector–diffuser system is employed to suck supersonic low-pressure and low-temperature flow into a high-pressure environment. A new design of a supersonic–supersonic ejector–diffuser was introduced to verify pressure control performance under different operating conditions and vacuum background pressure. A 1D analysis was used to predict the geometrical structure of an ejector–diffuser with a rectangular section based on the given operating conditions. Different numbers and types of nozzle plates were designed and installed on the ejector to study the realizability of avoiding or postponing the aerodynamic choking phenomenon in the mixing section. The effects of different geometrical parameters on the operating performance of the ejector–diffuser system were discussed in detail. Experimental investigation of the effects of different types of nozzle plates and the back pressures on the pressure control performance of the designed ejector–diffuser system were performed in a straight-flow wind tunnel. The results showed that the position, type and number of the nozzle plates have a significant impact on the beginning of the formation of aerodynamic choking. The geometry of the ejector and the operating conditions, especially the backpressure and inlet pressure of the ejecting stream, determined the entrainment ratio of the two supersonic streams. The experimental results showed that long nozzle-plate had a better performance in terms of maintaining pressure stability in the test section, while short a nozzle-plate had a better pressure matching performance and could maintain a higher entrainment ratio under high backpressure conditions. Influenced by the clearance flow between stator and rotor, the operational performance and hydraulic performance of full cross-flow pump units are often worse than that of semi-cross-flow pumps. In order to explore the influence mechanism of clearance structural parameters on clearance flow and provide a reliable scientific support for the improvement of both external and internal characteristics of full cross-flow pump units, firstly, the optimization of the stator–rotor clearance structure was studied as research entry point and the radial inlet and outlet clearance width were taken to set up design variables. Secondly, to establish a comprehensive optimization objective function considering both the operational performance and the hydraulic performance of the pump, the information weight method was adopted by weighting four evaluation indexes, namely, head coefficient, efficiency coefficient, vortex average radial deflection coefficient and axial velocity uniformity coefficient, which were calculated by numerical simulation. Finally, the relevant optimization design analysis was carried out by establishing the response surface model, with the optimal objective value obtained by conducting the steepest-descent method. The results show that the response of the radial inlet and outlet clearance width coefficient between stator and rotor to the comprehensive objective function is not directly coupled and the influence of the radial inlet clearance width coefficient on the objective function is higher than that of the radial outlet clearance width coefficient. The parameter optimization outcomes are as follows: the width coefficient of radial inlet clearance between stator and rotor is 2.2 and that of radial outlet clearance is 3.6, in which case the disturbance effect of clearance flow on the mainstream flow pattern in the pump can be significantly reduced, with the export cyclic quantity of the guide vane obviously decreased and the outlet flow pattern of the pump unit greatly improved. We study the capability of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to predict fluid residence time in a ventilated room. Validation is performed against an experiment where the inlet vent slot width matches that of the room. On a coarse grid, the Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model has a detrimental effect on flow statistics, whilst the WALE and Germano–Lilly models perform well. A refined grid produces close agreement with the reference data. A simulation with a narrow inlet slot demonstrates that the flow becomes three-dimensional, with pairs of spiral vortices forming in the room and altering the recirculation pattern when compared to the wide inlet slot configuration. The obtained LES statistics show improvements in the prediction of velocity field over conventional RANS modelling techniques. Fluid age probability density functions show that a wide range of residence time values around the mean value can be observed within the room. LES is capable of providing accurate predictions in a simplified ventilated room, and residence time probability density function distributions can be useful for the improvement of ventilation strategies. Chip breakers are used in turning to improve chip breakage. In standard cutting inserts, they are pressed into the rake face before sintering. However, for specialized tools like profile grooving tools, this pressing is not possible. Instead, a laser preparation process can be applied after grinding the tool profile to create a diverse range of chip breaker geometries. The aim of this investigation is to gain insights into the relationship between the geometric parameters of laser-prepared chip breaker geometries and chip formation. For this reason, experimental turning investigations were conducted with varied chip breaker geometries. Based on these experiments, chip formation was observed for different profile geometries and chip breakers. The findings indicate that the inlet angle, outlet angle, width, depth, and lateral ridges significantly influence chip-breaking behaviour. In this paper, a novel air‐cooled supercapacitor thermal management system (STMS) based on the corner deflectors and the inclined inlet and outlet was proposed. The temperature and velocity fields were simulated and analyzed by CFD. Moreover, the heat dissipation effect of different STMSs was analyzed against each other. The results showed that the STMS proposed had a better heat dissipation effect when the inclined angle of inlet and outlet was appropriate, in which the maximum temperature (Tmax) and the maximum temperature difference (ΔTmax) of the module could be reduced by 10.3% and 34.6%. And it is shown that the structure with inclined inlet and outlet plays an important role for the heat dissipation capability of the STMS proposed. And it has experimentally proven its heat dissipation ability. Consequently, the impacts of inclined angle (α), monomer spacing (dc), and the distance between monomer and module shell (dx, dy, and dz) on the heat dissipation effect were deeply analyzed. For the STMS arranged in four rows and three columns, it had a better heat dissipation effect when inclined angle was in the range of 40° to 50°. The results showed that the structural parameters had a large influence on the Tmax and ΔTmax. Besides, it had shown that the temperature curves of the Tmax and ΔTmax had a main trend of “decreasing and then increasing” when the monomer spacing as well as the distance between monomer and module shell are taken from 1 mm to 5 mm. It implies that a small spacing (1 mm to 2 mm) will hinder the air circulation and reduce heat dissipation, and a large spacing (3 mm to 5 mm) will reduce the average flow rate of air and reduce the efficiency of heat transfer. Mixing characteristics play an important role on the operational process of rotating detonation combustor (RDC). In this paper, a series of numerical calculations were conducted to analyze the influence of injection diameter, injection position, reactant mass flow rate, and equivalence ratio on mixing characteristics. Mixing performance parameters and total pressure loss in combustor dome and ignition zone were analyzed in detail. The findings indicated that all four injection conditions had significant influence on mixing characteristics, among which injection position was the most significant factor. When injection position was in convergent section, the mixing characteristics were better than those in ignition section. Reducing the fuel diameter gradually improved mixing characteristics, but also increased total pressure loss. The change of reactant mass flow rate had a minimal effect on mixing characteristics. As equivalence ratio decreased, mixing characteristics decreased and total pressure loss decreased. In addition, the comparative analysis also showed that penetration depth of hydrogen had an impact on flow field disturbance and distribution of return region, which led to the difference in mixing characteristics. The advection-diffusion equation is fundamental to modeling various transport phenomena, including the distribution of chemical species in surface or groundwater flow. In cases where the concentration at the source is unknown, inverse problem formulations are required to estimate the desired states by assimilating concentration monitoring data from specific points along the watercourse using a Bayesian approach. This paper proposes a combination of the Eulerian-Lagrangian method and the meshless method of fundamental solutions to solve the advection-diffusion equation. Moreover, the method was used as an evolution model for the sequential importance resampling particle filter algorithm to reconstruct the time-dependent inlet pollutant concentration in inverse problems. The aft-body mounted inlet of a hypersonic vehicle has garnered attention for its potential to shorten the propulsion system. This study aims to explore the influence of compression direction on the performance of the hypersonic inlet attached to the vehicle's aft body. To achieve this objective, a simplified, integrated model of the body and two-dimensional inlet was developed and evaluated using numerical simulation techniques. The study conducted a comparative analysis of the overall and starting performance between inverted and normal inlet layouts while ensuring uniformity in inlet configuration and installation location. The results indicated that the inverted layout surpassed the normal layout in terms of airflow capture capabilities, with an 8.24% higher mass flow rate. However, the inverted inlet layout exhibited an 11.46% reduction in total pressure recovery performance compared to the normal layout. Additionally, the study found that the inverted inlet layout demonstrated a self-starting Mach number 1.62 lower than that of the normal inlet layout. This difference stemmed primarily from the pressure gradient on the body surface induced by the incident shock wave of the inverted inlet, which enhanced starting performance by eliminating low-energy flow near the wall. The opening of the Cacela Inlet (southern Portugal) in 2010 led to unforeseen effects observed after 2017, including an extreme acceleration of the retreat of the inland lagoon margin from about 0.2 to 2 m/year. This was a consequence of the development of a large flood delta in an area of limited accommodation space, forcing the main tidal channel to move inland. The coastal retreat currently affects a flat sandy area that separates the old and inactive Cacela cliff from the lagoon. Between 2025 and 2030, the currently inactive Cacela cliff is likely to become active again, posing a potential risk of damage to a medieval fortress and the existing settlement of Cacela Velha, an unforeseen cascading effect of the opening of the inlet. The paper demonstrates an adaptation of a 3D printer (Prusa Mini+) with novel modules to develop a droplet generation system that generates combinatorial droplets from a standard 96 well plate. The calibration methodology developed would allow any fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer to generate monodisperse droplets (coefficient of variance (CV%) < 5%) from well plates or vials of any geometry. The system maintains precision across various volumes while maintaining a C.V. range of 0.81% to 3.61%, with an increased precision for larger volumes. The cost of the system developed is 70% less than commercially available droplet generation packages. Successful droplet library storage is accomplished via 3D printed cartridge connectors. The experimental data of core flow distribution are indispensable for obtaining licensing and facilitating the design of fluid systems of nuclear reactors. In this study, an Advanced power reactor Core flow and Pressure (ACOP) test facility was established to experimentally simulate the internal flow of the Advanced Power Reactor 1000 (APR1000) on a reduced length scale of 1/5. The core region was simulated by using 177 core simulators representing the fuel assemblies of the APR1000. The APR1000 flow distributions were synthetically identified by accurately measured parameters: the core inlet flow rate and outlet pressure under the four-pump balanced and unbalanced flow conditions. The overall inlet flow rates ranged from 87.7% to 112.0% relative to the averaged flow rate. Here, we scrutinize the flow distributions considering the flow conditions and internal structures and briefly describe the applied scaling method and design concept of the test facility. This study investigated the behavior and syngas characteristics of oil palm biomass fluidized bed gasification (FBG) with alternative inlet air configurations. The air was supplied to the combustion zone of the FBG with tangential and updraft air inlet (TI and UI) modes. A mixed oil palm decanter cake was used as feedstock at 3 kg/h feed rate. The experiments were done at the equivalence ratios (ERs) from 0.1 to 1.0. The experimental results showed that the air supply mode and ER affected the temperature distribution inside the gasifier. Operation with TI mode had combustion initiated at the side, then propagated through the middle section, while in UI mode, the combustion reaction was at the center of the chamber. With TI mode, the temperature at combustion zone was around 600 °C. At ER 0.5, this zone covered the heights from 0.25 to 0.75 m. In UI mode, the highest temperature was near 800 °C, but combustion was prominent only in a zone near the bottom. The CFD simulations showed that the alternative inlet air configurations and the ER influenced flow patterns. CFD confirmed the swirling streamlines in TI mode, while UI mode showed a localized elevated temperature, particularly at 0.25 m height. Syngas composition analysis indicated that operation in TI mode at ER of 0.7 provided the larger combustion zone, leading to better syngas product in terms of CO (> 20%) and H2 (> 8%) components. This mode also provided the best 5.1 MJ/m3 energy content for syngas. The results of this study can provide useful guidelines for further investigations of FBG with tangential air inlet. The present study was conducted to investigate the root cause failure analysis of 316L stainless steel air tube inlets at the weld joint in a High-Speed Power turbine (HSPT). Fractography analysis revealed ratchet marks and striations on the fracture surfaces, indictive of vibration-induced fatigue in the heat affected zone of the tube-to-flange weld joint, resulting from the rotation of the HSPT at high speed, identified as the primary cause of failure. Additionally, radiography and visual inspection unveiled a sharp interface between the weld metal and parent metal within the inner wall, acting as a stress riser. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the parent metal predominantly consisted of austenite (γ), while the weld metal comprised a mix of austenite (γ, ≈ 90%) and delta ferrite (δ, ≈ %10). Hardness readings in the weld zone ranged from 260–302 HV, compared to ≈ 140 HV in the parent metal. Microstructural examination showed inclusions and impurities rich in manganese, and silicon, likely introduced during manufacturing and/or welding processes. Conclusively, the study attributes failure to the use of low-quality materials and consumables, poor welding practices, and insufficient vibration condition monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel method has been proposed to design inlet gauzes in single-stage low-speed simulation compressor experiments. The aim is to investigate the method for designing inlet profiles and understand how they affect the repeatability of the compressor. Based on the inlet gauzes, the effect of the inlet profile on the compressor repeatability and its flow mechanisms was investigated by the experiments. The experiment results show that, for the single-stage low-speed compressor, as the inlet flow coefficient decreases, the loss and blockage near the rotor casing caused by the tip leakage flow are enhanced, resulting in an increase in the local absolute velocity and the total pressure. Meanwhile, the radial migration of the secondary cross flow in the stator is enhanced, leading to a thinner boundary layer at the stator outlet near casing region. Consequently, the flow capacity near the casing at the compressor outlet is enhanced with a decrease in the inlet flow coefficient. Given that the flow structure and the local loss of the compressor are not sensitive to the inlet profile at the near-choked condition, employing the inlet profile generated based on the compressor outlet profile at the near-stall condition can simulate the repeating stage environment accurately in the single-stage low-speed compressor experiment. Fluidized beds are favored for their high efficiency in material and heat exchange. However, a limited understanding of two-phase flow dynamics leads to the construction of larger equipment and makes precise control of fluidized beds challenging. Since it is challenging to eliminate the impact of signal noise in experiments, which arises from the inconsistency of particles and measurement methods, a square fluidized bed model has been established for numerical analysis of the chaotic characteristics of two-phase flow. The bubble distribution in the fluidized bed was observed more clearly, the bubble behavior was combined with the chaotic parameters, and the two flow states and the chaotic state were analyzed comprehensively. The results show that the bubbles present a regular arrangement parallel to the diagonal in the early stage of bubbling. At the same time, smooth reconstructed attractors are observed. The increase in fluidization wind speed will make the attractors rough until collapse. The bubbling bed experiences bifurcation into chaos as the fluidization wind speed increases, and we can see this process through the pressure signal. The system state cannot be distinguished by correlation dimension or K-entropy alone. Comprehensive consideration of a variety of chaotic features can be used as a method to identify two-phase flow chaotic states. The method used in this paper combines bubble behavior, pressure signal, power spectrum analysis, phase space reconstruction, correlation dimension, and Kolmogorov entropy to distinguish the state of the fluidized bed more accurately. In this study, the influence laws of different parameters on the exclusion characteristics of hailstone and ice flake, and on the aerodynamic performance of the inlet are studied by numerical method. The motion of the hailstone and ice flake is simulated using the 6-DOF method. Results show that the inhalation of hailstone in the inlet decreases total pressure distortion by about 20%, and the total pressure recovery coefficient is essentially unchanged. Icing of the upper lip decreases the total pressure distortion of the inlet by about 22%, and the total pressure recovery coefficient decreases by 0.6%. The ice flakes on the inner and outer lip, when shed and brake by collision with the center body, will cause damage to the engine duct. The shedding and breaking of ice flake at an angle of 150° to the lip can result in a large amount of ice flake debris entering the engine duct, threatening the performance and structure of the engine in the rear. The motion characteristics of hailstone and ice flake under helicopter fuselage/rotor/inlet integration conditions are revealed. It also provides a reference on the numerical methods for the numerical study of hailstone/ice flake exclusion characteristics of helicopter fuselage/rotor/inlet integration conditions. Axial clearance is a critical parameter affecting the performance of vortex pumps. In this study, numerical simulation and experimental validation methods are employed to establish four different clearance schemes. The analysis focuses on multiple aspects, including the internal flow field, clearance flow field, leakage flow, and recirculation flow, to investigate the impact of axial clearance on the internal flow field and the external characteristics of the vortex pump. The results indicate that under the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet, the main flow leaks from the high-pressure region at the outlet to the clearance flow channel, and the clearance flow returns to the main flow channel at the low-pressure region of the inlet. As the axial clearance increases, the intensity of the vortices inside the pump gradually decreases. This leads to a reduction in intensity of the momentum exchange between the fluid inside and outside the impeller, causing a decline in the pump performance curve. Simultaneously, the increase in clearance reduces the flow resistance in the clearance region, and the clearance flow gradually stabilizes. The interaction between the clearance flow and the main flow intensifies, causing the leakage flow and recirculation flow to increase rapidly, which results in significant energy loss. With renewed interest in the optimisation of the hydraulic performance of new and existing culverts, particularly relevant to South Africa's evolving road network and anticipated climate-induced rainfall changes, this research investigated the benefit of angled wingwall and headwall combinations and considered the installation of a ventilation device in order to improve culvert performances. Through experimental modelling at the University of Pretoria Water Laboratory, the angled wingwall and headwall combinations demonstrated significant flow improvements compared to square inlets. It was also demonstrated that a ventilation device could cause flow through culverts to flow under inlet control conditions where it would otherwise have flowed under outlet control conditions. Additionally, the study proposes design coefficient adjustments for square inlet culverts operating under inlet control conditions. The proposed improvements can be applied during design stages, but the findings also propose prefabricated inlet elements as cost-effective solutions for existing culverts, thereby facilitating quick upgrades without the need for lengthy road closures while potentially enabling benefits for pedestrian traffic. Ultimately, this study underscores the potential of innovative and novel design modifications to enhance culvert performance, offering sustainable and economical alternatives to conventional replacement practices while advancing hydraulic engineering resilience in response to evolving infrastructural and environmental demands. In deep-sea mining hydraulic lifting systems, centrifugal pumps are very important as power units. In the process of transportation, the fluid prewhirl phenomenon in the impeller inlet will lead to changes in the state of motion of the particles and fluid and cause the wear of the inlet pipe, which can lead to centrifugal pump failure in serious cases. In this paper, a numerical simulation of the centrifugal pump is carried out based on the CFD-DEM coupling method to analyze the influence of the prewhirl on the wear of the inlet pipe. The results show that the velocity streamline near the impeller inlet position changes significantly. The flow field velocity increases along the radial direction of the inlet pipe, and it has a maximum value at r/R = 0.98. The prewhirl flow pulls the particles to change their original motion direction, and the area where the particles are subjected to high fluid force is concentrated between 0.5 d/D and 1 d/D, about 0.015 to 0.018 N, resulting in the uneven distribution of particles. The high-wear area appears in the bottom-left area (specifically, L4, L9, and L13), and this is also the location of the largest cumulative force; the high-wear area shows a triangle.
