Research on parental mediation of children’s online engagements situate historically long­standing anxieties within the dynamics of present-day information communications technologies (i.e., concerns over new “cyber risks,” as well as opportunities). Yet, there remains a lack of emphasis on children’s reactions to and experiences with parental strategies and responses. In the current article, we highlight research involving semi-structured focus groups (n=35) with Canadian teenagers (n=115). We highlight themes directly related to parental digital mediation, including the role of ICTs in driving addictive behaviors, social connection, differences in parental responses between sons and daughters, and differences concerning age and birth order. Disrupting cultural discourses of young people who lack agency in relation to their use of ICTs, our discussions with teens reveal qualified support, even degrees of sympathy, for parental efforts to restrict access and use of digital technologies, but illuminate multifaceted reasons for resistance: their vital role not only for social connection but access to crucial information and knowledge.

In rural areas, entrepreneurship helps lift households out of poverty by alleviating unemployment and increasing income, and financial literacy plays an important role in promoting entrepreneurship. Social capital is a resource embedded in social relationships, the boundaries of which have been expanded by the development of information communications technologies (ICTs). This article aims to link social capital, financial literacy, and rural entrepreneurship through a partial mediating effect analysis. Using data from the 2015 China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), we analyze how social capital affects rural entrepreneurship and the role of local ICTs development in this effect while also accounting for reverse causality. We construct a social capital indicator, mainly referring to bridging social capital, and two financial literacy indicators to make the conclusions robust. The empirical results show that social capital promotes rural entrepreneurship by sharing financial literacy. Furthermore, the spread of ICTs enhances this mediating effect. Our study provides empirical evidence for encouraging entrepreneurship and promoting knowledge sharing and implies the importance of ICTs in promoting entrepreneurship in rural areas.

Energy storage systems (ESSs) have recently been incorporated into low-voltage distribution networks (DNs) for promoting hosting capacity of photovoltaic (PV) systems. On the other hand, applications of information communications technologies enhance the self-regulation ability of LVDNs and are playing an important role to resolve integration problems of PV systems. Although the two aspects influence each other, they are generally configured separately in LVDNs. This study proposes a collaborative configuration scheme based on a bi-level optimisation model for distributed ESSs and cyber systems in LVDNs with high penetration of PV systems. In the upper level, the ESSs and wireless control terminals are deployed to minimise investment and operation cost with consideration of specific control of ESSs. In the lower level, communication topology is further optimised according to the upper-level results to promote control performance and balance communication topology complexity. The economy and effectiveness of the proposed configuration scheme are demonstrated by comparing with separated cyber and physical configuration schemes in case studies.
