In this paper, we propose a comprehensive and optimised workflow for the documentation and the future maintenance and management of a historical building, integrating the state of the art of different techniques, in the challenging context of industrial archaeology. This approach has been applied to the hydraulic work of the "Sostegno del Battiferro" in Bologna, Italy, an example of built industrial heritage whose construction began in 1439 and remains in active use nowadays to control the Navile canal water flow rate. The initial step was the definition of a 3D topographic frame, including geodetic measurements, which served as a reference for the complete 3D survey integrating Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Structured Light Projection scanning, and the photogrammetric processing of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) imagery through a Structure from Motion (SfM) approach. The resulting 3D point cloud has supported as-built parametric modelling (Scan-to-BIM) with the consequent extraction of plans and sections. Finally, the Heritage/Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) model generated was rendered and tested for a VR-based immersive experience. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and virtual reality (VR) applications were tested as a support for the management of the building, the maintenance of the hydraulic system, and the training of qualified technicians. In addition, considering the historical value of the surveyed building, the methodology was also applied for dissemination purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the turn of the twentieth century, American logging companies backed by the US colonial regime initiated extensive extraction in Bikol, Philippines. Industrial infrastructure and the involvement of a newly assembled Bikolano workforce left a profound imprint on the region's landscape. This article discusses a collaborative archaeological project that used archival materials, place-name analysis, ethnographic interviews, discussions with local scholars, satellite mapping, and drone-mounted lidar scans of former industrial sites. Findings shed light on the enduring ramifications of American logging in the early 1900s on settlement patterns, the infrastructure of routes and mobility, the state of industries from Philippine independence in 1946 through the 1980s, and ongoing environmental hazards. These findings emphasize the legacy of American empire, reveal the role of Filipino logging workers in shaping the landscape through settlement decisions, and uncover intricate connections across a pan-Pacific American colonial frontier that was shaped by both extractive and settler colonialism. This article adds to an emerging trend in Americanist archaeology in which archaeology investigates recent historical and even contemporary events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2020 and 2021, Commonwealth Heritage Group was contracted by Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives to monitor construction at the historic Main Factory Complex of the Pullman National Monument. Construction activities were related to site development for historical interpretation and a public museum in coordination with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the National Park Service to document any significant resources related to the Pullman period (1880–1897). A landscaping wall associated with Lake Vista, the South Erecting Shop foundation, and the Workers' Gate foundation were encountered during construction and determined to contribute to the significance of the site. The Workers' Gate and gatehouse is one of the most recognized locations at the Main Factory Complex and is symbolic of the American labor movement. The archaeological remnants of the Workers' Gate and gatehouse indicate that George Pullman constructed it and posted a watchman to assert more control over his workers during a time of escalating labor tensions. Cultural materials associated with the Workers' Gate foundation and other site locales provide insight into the consumer choices made by the Pullman workers and illustrate some of the ways Pullman workers and residents resisted company control. Urban regeneration and industrial archaeology, dating back between the fourties and the fifties of the 20th century, has drawn attention to architecture, equipment and evidence of human manufacturing, widening the scope of Heritage Preservation in Europe and all over the world. Scholars detected an overall and quite similar development of the approach to industrial Heritage throughout time in the western world, from an early spontaneus interest, through an exploitation mostly based on economic purposes, towards a more recent preservative and inclusive attitude in regenerating buildings and sites, that has a strong support from the voluntary sector in UK. This paper reports the concept and main achievements of a team that, since the seventies, has being pioneering an interdisciplinary, cost-effective and yet preservative approach to abandoned production sites. Blending economic return and true attention to people and site specificity, innovation and campaigns for protection and proper reuse, this approach has been proving to be able to decline the different acceptations of sustainability and, as for conceptual and operational aspects, presents some interesting food for thought.

Archaeological research into industrial heritage is a relatively recent field of study in the Czech Republic. During the past six years, several historical textile production facilities (including five dyeing workshops) have been uncovered as part of preparatory work for construction projects in areas traditionally associated with the textile industry. Following excavations, these facilities have been the subject of interdisciplinary research. This article presents a comprehensive account of its findings. The introductory part traces the historical development of the textile industry in what is now the Czech Republic. The article then presents the results of research carried out at sites in Brno, Úštěk and Krnov, documenting the possibilities of rescue archaeology and non-destructive surveys as well as tracing this type of workshop's heating units evolution, providing a comprehensive overview of industrial dyeing in the territory of the present-day Czech Republic during the 18th and 19th centuries. - Abstract
Historical developments on the flood-prone terraces below Willamette Falls involved deliberate modification of the landscape through construction of artificial ground. Evidence of this practice was found on the north side of the Oregon City Woolen Mill, built in 1864–1865, where at various times a saloon, hotel, and grocery stood before 1890, when the area was encompassed within the mill's North Addition. A trench excavated within the foundation of the North Addition encountered fill material containing Native American artifacts, indicating that these sediments originated in a nearby former Native American settlement used as a borrow area. Also recovered from the fill were historical artifacts from as many as three different sources: the Hudson's Bay Company, pre-1890 businesses, and woolen-mill operations. This case study underscores the potential for artificial ground to be a primary depositional context for archaeological evidence associated with historical urban and industrial developments in what today are postindustrial landscapes. Using the example of an industrial site in Edmonton, Alberta, this paper argues that industrial ruins represent instantiations of abstract abandonment, a kind of real abstraction that directly articulates to the logic of capital. Drawing from excavations of the industrial ruins of Mill Creek Ravine, one of the first industrial areas in Edmonton, this paper reveals how sites of abstract abandonment congeal critical histories of both abandonment and its afterlives. The history of these ruins, and the communities that emerged after they were abandoned materialize the failures of capitalist fantasies, as well as the sprouts that grow in its cracks. This paper focuses on examining the transformation of the Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory area, investigating the qualities of the buildings in the area, and evaluating them in the context of industrial archaeology. The study aimed to determine whether each of the four conservation methods determined by TICCIH and ERIH organizations and Rolf Höhmann (1992) are preferred for the buildings of the Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory. Data collection was carried out in 5 years between 2018-2022. Data were collected through on-site observation, analysis of relevant documentation, and interviews with the Kundura Hafıza (Shoe Memory) unit established within the factory during multiple site visits. The original aspect and importance of the study is to conduct and comprehensively evaluate all three of the literature study, fieldwork, and data analysis within the scope of the study.

14. The palaeopathology of industry, a perspective from Britain.

Mays, S.A.
- Abstract
This article considers the position of palaeopathology of ca. 1750AD onward within the subdiscipline of Industrial Archaeology, and reflects upon the relationship between skeletal palaeopathology and textual sources on disease prevalences. It draws upon the author's experience in engaging with threat-led archaeology. It synthesises key elements of palaeopathological literature, emphasising contributions to the IJPP VSI 'Changes in Health with the Rise of Industry', and also the broader literature regarding Industrial Archaeology. Industrial Archaeology has seen a recent refocus to include not only a concentration upon technological aspects of industry but also increased emphasis the social context of industrialisation. This movement toward a placement of people as well as machines centre stage has resulted in an environment conducive for paleopathology to make a greater impact upon studies of the period. Palaeopathologists need to ensure that their biocultural work is orientated toward research goals of broader relevance if the impact of their work is to be maximised. We cannot directly align prevalence data generated from skeletal and and written sources; roles played by these two sources of evidence will depend, inter alia , upon the problems being investigated. The success of 'Industrial Palaeopathology' will be measured by the extent to which human remains studies move toward centre stage within the broader discipline of Industrial Archaeology. Multiple perspectives on disciplinary development are possible. Academic traditions, relationships between university- and threat led-sectors, and the opportunities and challenges engendered by working with human remains, differ in different countries. At the beginning of the 19th century, nobody in the landscape of the heaths and ponds of Lusatia, a small region in the German-Polish border area, would have suspected the lasting effects of the lignite mining boom on the economy, landscape, and the local communities there. The initially small underground mines soon developed into large open-pit mines. 'Industrial cathedrals' were established, new cities were raised out of the heathland, long-distance transport networks were expanded, and industrial centres emerged that gained importance throughout Europe. The local population and culture changed through migration, adaptation and assimilation, the landscape through the huge earth movements caused by lignite mining. This enormous transformation of an entire region has an impact on identity even today, and still influences political processes. It is now the task of archaeology and heritage management organisations to document this recent past as well and to preserve its cultural value.

The paper aims to study the geometrical quality and opportunities of the state-of-the-art 3D camera Matterport Pro and examine its potential for industrial archaeology applications. The presented study consisted of two steps. In the first step, the geometrical quality of the camera-generated point cloud was investigated on the calibration test field. The geometrical quality was checked in two ways: (1) with distance comparison between reference targets and (2) with point cloud comparison. The coordinates of the reference targets were determined using a high-precision total station, while the FARO Scanner generated the reference point cloud. The study established that Matterport Pro has a scale systematic error that must be accounted for in 3D modeling and the inventory of archaeological objects. In the second step, the geometrical quality of the camera was checked for the actual archaeological object. As such an object, the historical copper-shaft Quincy Mine in Michigan State Upper Peninsula was considered. The specific subject of the study was one of the largest hoist engines in the world. The Matterport Pro camera scanned the indoor environment of the hoist engine house. The accuracy of the 3D model of the hoist engine was checked using additional linear measurements on-site. It was found that the accuracy of 1% showed that the camera specification can be improved through calibration. As an output of the second step, the accurately refined 3D model of the hoist engine’s interior was built. That model was embedded into a 3D model of the hoist engine’s house for usage in virtual tours of the Quincy Mine Museum. Finally, a virtual tour was created of the Quincy Mine house with exterior and interior models referenced to the geographical frame.

LOCAL history , *ECOLOGICAL impact , *HONEY , *FLAX ,SCOTTISH history - Abstract
Paul Bishop's interest in local history was longstanding. As he neared retirement, he expanded his researches into local landscapes and a longheld interest in industrial archaeology. As Paul's desire to minimise his carbon footprint increased, so did his research into the local area where we lived in East Dunbartonshire. As well as using his skills and experience as a geomorphologist, Paul extended his research methods, examining dovecotes, horse gins, ha-has, lime kilns, bleachworks, flax mills, the linen industry and other topics related to his great loves: landscape, mills and local history. Paul went in, waders and all. This piece is designed to trace the origins of Paul's enthusiasm for local history, to discuss the characteristics of Paul's involvement in this research area, his collaborations and his significant contribution to local history in Scotland, not only through research but by his service to various groups and bodies involved in Scottish local history. Part of Paul's legacy is his ability to enthuse and engage people in learning about their local environments. He leaves behind an extensive archive. A more general point is made about personal archives and how we might approach them in order to preserve such materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Industrial‐scale metal mining has long been a feature of developing economies. Processing ores to recover minerals has generated large quantities of waste rock, tailings and contaminants. Mining‐related deposits, along with associated soil and water geochemistry, river modifications and other environmental changes, are a product of the nature, scale and intensity of past operations. These artefacts of historical mining create anthropogenic landscapes that extend far beyond individual sites due to the dispersal of mine waste by rivers and pose enduring threats to human and ecosystem health. Their presence and significance, however, are often overlooked by heritage and environmental managers. To be acknowledged as artefacts of the historical mining industry, landscape features must be identified and characterised with reference to the human activities that triggered their formation. This requires an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates anthropogenic landscape change at a regional scale. In this paper, we integrate archaeological, geomorphological and geochemical evidence to identify and analyse mining‐related changes to the Loddon River valley in Victoria, Australia. Nineteenth‐century gold mining caused extensive erosion of creeks and gullies and mobilised sediments that filled channels and spread over floodplains. In addition, tailing deposits concentrated arsenic at levels significantly above environmental background conditions. Recognising these legacies of historical mining is vital to understanding mining heritage and to managing healthy rivers, environments and communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mining has occupied an important place in the Chilean economy since the 19th century and up to the present day. However, the oscillating cycles of economic booms and crises in the mining sector have left traces of industrial buildings from mining and copper metallurgy with unique characteristics. The objective of this article is to describe the materiality and origin of the construction system used in the ruins of a former nineteenth-century copper foundry located in the port of Caldera, in northern Chile. The ruins of the buildings show that the foundations and walls built with blocks of copper slag melted and molded in situ, was a construction technique brought by the English builders and metallurgists who arrived in the mining centers of Atacama, replicating the techniques used in English works, an activity that allowed the valorization of metallurgical waste. Bucket-ladder dredges are a relatively rare maritime archaeological and historical resource. Based on a North American assessment of all known surviving examples, including those preserved as historic sites as well as archaeological resources, the maritime origins, of these craft are clear in the construction of their hulls as well as the matrix in which they worked. Floating in ponds they had self-excavated, these large floating industrial facilities represented the last stage of placer gold mining as the late nineteenth century transitioned into the early twentieth. These dredges are, as floating craft, maritime archaeological resources as well as historical and mining archaeological resources. While only a handful of dredges are known to exist as archaeological sites or are preserved as historical sites, the material record of their activities is much larger. Vast landscapes of dredge soil, altered ecosystems, and associated infrastructure are evidence of the evolution of gold mining in an increasingly industrial progression. In that, these craft are also contributors to their own, self-made landscapes that again, it is argued, are unique maritime cultural landscapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proposed application of the HBIM methodology for digitising a productive-industrial structure is based on the integration of data from different sources. An aerial photogrammetric survey (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle - UAV) was considered the most appropriate technique for the case. Therefore, a Scan-to-BIM modelling was carried out, keeping in mind a subsequent texturisation of the smart objects employing the photogrammetric images obtained from the UAV survey. Currently, applying the BIM methodology to the built environment is still a challenge; indeed, three-dimensional modelling based on survey point clouds is not automatic. Any BIM software is designed for new constructions, whereas the existing Heritage is characterised by unique and distinctive shapes, where each element has a specific and variable inclination, shape and thickness; therefore, it is necessary to adapt the available tools. Creating intelligent parametric objects capable of representing the unique and singular shapes and geometries of historic architecture is a significant challenge of HBIM modelling. A workflow for the acquisition, processing and management of the survey data and the consequent modelling in a BIM environment of a disused industrial plant previously used as a tobacco factory was formalised. The aim was, therefore, to develop a model that is as close as possible to the real one and, at the same time, still keeps the informative aspects in order to promote the conservation and possible refurbishment of the cultural heritage through the use of photorealistic visualisation tools in real-time. The results confirm the proposed strategy hypotheses and seem to lead to promising future developments.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.29.2022.15

This article offers a different way to understand the heritage of extractive industries by exploring the material afterlives of what has been termed the "ancillary impacts of resource development"—a variety of quarries, forest cuts, transportation corridors, and power lines that surround industrial operations, especially those created in areas distant from established industrial population centers. To study this, the article expands upon the concept of "vestige" to explore the landscapes around two single-industry mining towns in Kola Peninsula, Russia, and in Labrador, Canada, by specifically focusing on two abandoned quarries located in each. The results highlight the need to explore developments that trail behind industrial settlement of colonial hinterlands. By focusing specifically on the afterlives of such developments, the article demonstrates how chronological and geographical boundaries of resource extraction are blurred over time, creating a deep, unruly, self-perpetuating set of legacies. Blackmiddens Farm distillery, also known as Buck distillery, has recently been the focus of historical research and excavation. At the time of the first season of fieldwork Blackmiddens/Buck was the only farm distillery to have been excavated in the Highlands and Islands. The site represents a short-lived period of distilling in the Scottish Highlands in which whisky-making operated in a legitimate commercial capacity but as a complement to a larger agricultural unit. The excavation of Blackmiddens and historical research into it and the distilleries in the surrounding area have given us an insight into this short but vital transitional phase in the history of whisky-making in the region.

CULTURAL property , *NATURE study , *INDUSTRIALIZATION , *ARCHAEOLOGY , *BIBLIOMETRICS , *ANNIVERSARIES - Abstract
2022 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the approval of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, an event that marked the beginning of recent consideration of cultural heritage. During this period, industrial heritage has become a relevant issue in Spanish scientific studies, but conditioned by its diffuse conceptualization, within the framework of a controversial discipline -Industrial Archeology- and with a study object of complex methodological delimitation, chronological and thematic. In this context, scientific research on the legacy of contemporary industrialization in Spain has grown exponentially in recent decades and yields interesting conclusions about the nature of the different studies, their territorial and thematic distribution or the various branches of knowledge that have participated in them. This process. This work carries out a bibliometric study on the more than 1,600 works published on this issue in these fifty years and allows obtaining results about how, when and from what perspectives the study of Spanish industrial heritage has been approached. INDUSTRIAL archaeology , *CONSTRUCTION industry , *CONSTRUCTION materials , *CLIMATE change , *SUSTAINABLE development - Abstract
Buildings of an industrial nature dated from the 1950s through '80s are often quite interesting from the standpoint of typology, architecture and technology, and correspond to the development of technological industrial efforts of that era. Still, they sit on the periphery of professional interest, in both the Czech Republic and abroad. The topic of industrial architecture which existed by the 1950s is already positioned in the professional spheres on the research and protection of industrial heritage, as well as the methodological development of industrial heritage. Industrial archaeology usually deals only with the industrialization period, and at the same time is difficult for contemporary researchers to postpone the debate forward. Our contemporary research thus plays very important role in evaluation of a typical and atypical examples of industrial buildings of that time. We continually lose many iconic buildings as well as a strata of historical culture as efforts are ongoing to determine both the ways we can protect this portion of industrial heritage and detail the problems that emerge in efforts to reuse it. TRANSPORTATION ,JARRAH ,TIMBER ,FORESTS & forestry ,INDUSTRIAL archaeology - Abstract
The nineteenth century timber industry in Western Australia relied on traditional British technologies and struggled to deal with massive old-growth jarrah trees, and the subsequent transportation of milled timber to market. Mason's Mill, situated in the Darling Range to the east of Perth, had access to a vast amount of high quality timber, yet was economically unviable for most of its 20 year history, ultimately failing in the mid-1870s. Archaeological survey of the mill site and associated primary extractive sites demonstrate that a significant corpus of evidence of timber-getting activities remains in the forest. While ephemeral, this evidence allows a greater understanding of difficulties encountered by early timber-getting operations, and how reliance on obsolete technologies, and inadequate transport options, ultimately undermined Mason's Mill's ability to succeed. The introduction of Hoffmann kiln was a crucial turning point for the advance in bricks production techniques. The development of typological features of this kind of factory involved a high level of specialization of its spaces, but it led also to a lowered interior flexibility that makes particularly difficult its re-use after the building disposal. The possible balance between needs of conservation and building recovery of this industrial heritage is the main topic of a research that includes the listing of Hoffmann kilns in some areas of the Central Italy, the development of a proper operational methodology and its validation on two case studies located on the coasts of Abruzzo and Lazio regions and used as new cultural incubators.

• Industrial sites are evaluated based on 22 distinct criteria under 6 main topics. • Detailed building characteristics are investigated. • Logistic regression applications are implemented to industrial heritage registration decisions. • Factors affecting registration status of industrial sites are quantified. • Regression analysis is an efficient method to criticize previous registration decisions. Due to technological developments, abandoned and damaged Industrial sites in Europe underwent a rapid transformation after World War II. As a reaction to losing these cultural values, the idea of valuing these industrial sites as the heritage of the Industrial Revolution was introduced in the 1950s. Since then, many studies have been conducted on preserving the industrial heritage. In these theoretical and empirical studies, we observe a lack of objective criteria and systematic methodology for identifying a given industrial site as heritage. There are differences in the perceptions of stakeholders, policymakers, and experts about industrial heritage in different countries. This study aims to identify the effective determinants of the registration decisions of industrial heritage sites in Turkey that were previously evaluated for registration. In this study, Ottoman Royal Factories from the 19th century and some important factories of the Early Turkish Republican Era in the first half of the 20th century are investigated, collecting characteristics of a total of 215 buildings from 12 industrial sites in Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Bursa provinces in Turkey. These industrial sites are evaluated based on 22 socio-cultural, architectural, structural, and industrial criteria. A binary logistic regression modeling approach is implemented to identify influential factors in the registration decisions of industrial heritages. Our regression model results reveal that building-specific factors like view, period, uniqueness, reflections of its period, and economic potential play an important role in registration decisions. - Abstract
Reviewing over the years the research work process that gave rise to the doctoral thesis defended in 2010 is stimulating. It is a reflective process on the research carried out then, but also on the theoretical, methodological approaches and strategies of current research. From approaches from disciplines such as Work Sociology, Social History and Industrial Archaeology, a case study was proposed: the company Calzados Coloma. In an eminently rural La Mancha territory, we find a paradigmatic company in the introduction of Taylorist and Fordist systems that becomes a reference for the application of the principles of the Scientific Organization of Labor in the Footwear Industry in Spain.

- Abstract
Representing the first substantial English-language text on Industrial Archaeology in a decade, this handbook comes at a time when the global impact of industrialization is being re-assessed in terms of its legacy of climate change, mechanization, urbanization, the forced migration of peoples, and labour relations. Critical debates around the beginning of a new geological era - The Anthropocene - have emerged over the last decade. This approach interrogates the widespread exploitation of natural resources that forged industrialization from its early emergence in 18th century northern Europe to its contemporary ubiquity, environmental impacts, and social legacy within our globalized world. Through a broad international and multi-period set of chapters, this volume explores the complex origins, processes, and development of industrialization through both its physical remains and human consequences - both the good and the bad. It provides a diverse material framework for understanding our modern world, from its industrial origins through its future paths in the 21st century.

The post‐depositional afterlife of an archaeological site is often viewed as the least important aspect of its history and outside of traditional archaeological interest. In the case of industrial sites, this elision ignores one of the most important aspects of industrial history, namely the long‐term effects of toxic waste. In an era where industrial pollution and anthropogenic climate change are rapidly changing the future of life on this planet, the stakes of understanding the effects of industrial waste are vital. This article outlines a reflexive, ecologically focused archaeology that interrogates the afterlives of industrial waste, not as a method to get back to the history of production, but as a means for taking seriously these afterlives as a defining characteristic of life in the Anthropocene. Using the concept of the ecological lives of industrial waste to explore the (post)industrial history of Mill Creek Ravine—a historically important industrial area in Edmonton, Alberta— this article argues that the decomposition of industrial waste serves as both a medium for long‐term harms, as well as the locus for emergent relations and critical investigation.
