The primary objective of this article is to shed light on industrial zones and their impacts on regional industrial attractiveness and competitiveness in Algeria. This study relies on the results of research conducted through a quantitative statistical survey among a sample of 110 companies (SMEs) located in various industrial zones in the Blida Province, allowing us to specify the impact of these industrial zones on local attractiveness and competitiveness. The results of our survey show that the industrial zones in Blida Province are highly conducive to the establishment of businesses, attracting project initiators effectively. The large number of businesses located in industrial zones and activity areas demonstrates that these zones remain attractive and present certain competitive advantages. Industrial zones can play a key role in local industrial attractiveness and dynamics. Background. Industrial zones are a special type of anthropogenically disturbed ecosystems. The species composition and morphoecological organization of ground beetles in such areas may differ from natural ecosystems. The purpose of the research is to study the species biodiversity of ground beetles and the range of their life forms in industrial zones in the city of Tula. Materials and methods. The material for the study was 1675 specimens of ground beetles collected in 2017–2021 in the sanitary protection zones of two metallurgical plants, as well as in control areas. Results. In the areas of metallurgical enterprises and in control areas, 38 species of Carabidae belonging to 18 genera were identified. The control area, located in the meadow ecosystem, has the highest species abundance of carabide fauna. 30 species (78.95 %) were recorded in this area. The control area in the forest ecosystem includes 26 species (68.42 %), model areas near the Tulachermet plant – 22 species (57.89 %), Kosogorsky Metallurgical Plant – 19 species (50.00 %). In the study areas, 9 life forms of ground beetles were identified, representing 2 class – zoophages (7 groups) and mixophytophages (2 groups). Among the predatory forms, litter-soil burrowing stratobionts dominate (7 species, 18.42 %), among mixophytophages – harpaloid geochortobionts (11 species, 28.95 %). The spectrum of life forms in the control area in the meadow includes 9 groups, in the control area in the forest – 8 groups, in the Kosogorsk Metallurgical Plant – 6 groups, in the Tulachermet area – 5 groups. Conclusions. In the industrial zones of Tula, a decrease in the species composition of ground beetles is observed compared to control areas. Near metallurgical enterprises, there is a disturbance in the structural characteristics of the carabid fauna, which is confirmed by the values of biodiversity indices. Also, in the areas of metallurgical enterprises, changes are observed in the spectrum of life forms, namely a decrease in their number and ratio.

The increase in industrial activities has raised concerns regarding air quality in urban areas within Malawi. To assess the source apportionment of air quality parameters (AQPs) and noise levels, concentrations of AQPs (CO, TSP, PM 2.5, PM10) and noise levels were monitored at 15 sites in Makata, Limbe, Maselema, Chirimba, and Maone during dry and wet seasons, respectively. Active mobile multi-gas monitors and a Dylos DC1100 PRO Laser Particle Counter (2018 model) were used to monitor AQPs, while Integrated Sound Level Meters were used to measure noise levels. Monitoring and analysis were guided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Malawi Standards (MS). A Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model was used to determine source apportionment of AQPs, and matrix trajectories analysed air mass movement. In the wet season, the average concentration values of CO, TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 were 0.49 ± 0.65 mg/m3, 85.03 ± 62.18 µg/m3, 14.65 ± 8.13 µg/m3, and 11.52 ± 7.19 µg/m3, respectively. Dry season average concentration values increased to 1.31 ± 0.81 mg/m3, 99.86± 30.06 µg/m3, 24.35 ± 9.53 µg/m3, and 18.28 ± 7.14 µg/m3. Noise levels remained below public MS and WHO standards (85 dB). Positive correlations between AQPs and noise levels were observed, strengthening from weak in the dry season to moderately strong in the wet season. PMF analysis identified key factors influencing AQPs accumulation, emphasizing the need for periodic sampling to monitor seasonal pollution trends, considering potential impacts on public health and environmental sustainability. Air pollution is a global issue requiring investigation into its temporal changes, impacts, and causes to mitigate adverse environmental and human health efects. Analyzing trends is crucial for understanding air quality variations, climate change, and socioeconomic development over time. The innovative polygon trend analysis method was applied to compare the Dilovasi industrial zone in Turkey and the Gumi industrial complex-1 in South Korea from 2015 to 2020. Monthly data were examined for key pollutants, including PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO, to identify signifcant changes in each industrial zone. PM10 and NO2 concentrations exhibited decreasing trends in both industrial zones, except for an increase solely in PM10 in October. SO2 concentrations decreased during January to April but increased during the remaining months. CO levels in the DIZ increased throughout the year, except for February and November. In the GIC-1, PM10 showed an upward trend in January, February, March, November, and December, with the opposite pattern observed for the rest of the year. SO2, CO, and NO2 concentrations in the GIC-1 decreased consistently throughout the year. CO exhibited the longest transition in change length in the DIZ, while NO2 showed the longest trend length in the GIC-1. The results of this study highlight the suitability of IPTA for capturing signifcant changes in air quality within industrial zones. Furthermore, the insights provided by IPTA can help authorities comprehend the variations in air pollutants and make well-informed decisions to address this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Young migrant workers living in low- and middle-income countries often experience barriers and inadequate access to HIV prevention and treatment services. This study examines the prevalence of HIV testing, associated factors, and reasons for obtaining and not obtaining HIV testing among young sexually active women migrant workers in an industrial zone in Hanoi, Vietnam. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 512 sexually active young women migrant workers (aged 18 to 29) working in the Thang Long industrial zone in Hanoi, Vietnam. Data was collected via a face-to-face interview from January 2020 to June 2021. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors associated with ever-testing for HIV among sexually active participants. Results The study found a low level of HIV testing and high rates of unprotected sex. Among those who reported being sexually active, only 23.7% of participants (n = 126) reported having ever been tested for HIV. Among those who reported never having tested for HIV, 38.2% reported not using condoms during their most recent sexual encounter. Factors associated with engaging in HIV testing included being older (25–29 years), having greater knowledge about HIV, past use of sexual and reproductive health and HIV services, and familiarity with HIV testing locations. Conclusions Overall, a low level of HIV testing, high rates of unprotected sex, and low perceived risks regarding HIV among the study participants point to a need to implement targeted HIV interventions that can improve both safe sex practices and perceptions of and knowledge about risky sexual behaviors. Such interventions should use insights from this study to address factors facilitating HIV testing among industrial zones’ women migrant workers.

Background: Depression is a common mental disorder that significantly contributes to the global burden of disease. Studies have consistently reported that migrant workers experience higher levels of depressive symptoms, especially women. Aims: This study aimed to examine the mediation role of sexual self-efficacy on the relationship between psychological wellbeing, and depressive symptoms among young female migrant workers in Vietnam's industrial zones. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1061 female migrant workers aged 18 to 29 from January to November 2020 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Anonymous interview questionnaires were used to collect data on demographic characteristics, psychosocial wellbeing (PWB), sexual self-efficacy, and depressive symptoms. Mediation analysis was conducted to explore the mediation effect of sexual self-efficacy on the relationship between PWB and depressive symptoms. Results: Nearly 8% of the female migrant workers reported experiencing depressive symptoms. The final mediation model showed that the effect of overall psychological wellbeing on depressive symptoms was partially mediated by sexual self-efficacy. Specifically, 4.1% of the effect of overall PWB on depressive symptoms was mediated through sexual self-efficacy. In the PWB subdimension analyses, sexual self-efficacy mediated 14.3% of the effect of personal growth, 8.8% of the effect of purpose in life, 8.0% of the effect of autonomy, and 7.8% of the effect of environmental mastery on depressive symptoms, respectively. Conclusion: The study findings demonstrate that sexual self-efficacy plays an important role in the relationship between psychosocial wellbeing and depressive symptoms among female migrant workers in industrial zones in Vietnam. Improving psychosocial wellbeing and promoting sexual health including sexual self-efficacy should be prioritized when addressing depressive symptoms and mental health concerns among industrial zone female migrant workers in Vietnam, which may also be applicable in other low- and middle-income countries with similar socio-cultural settings. Machine learning currently holds a vital position in predicting collision severity. Identifying factors associated with heightened risks of injury and fatalities aids in enhancing road safety measures and management. Presently, Thailand faces considerable challenges with respect to road traffic accidents. These challenges are particularly acute in industrial zones, where they contribute to a rise in injuries and fatalities. The mixture of heavy traffic, comprising both trucks and non-trucks, significantly amplifies the risk of accidents. This situation, hence, generates profound concerns for road safety in Thailand. Consequently, discerning the factors that influence the severity of injuries and fatalities becomes pivotal for formulating effective road safety policies and measures. This study is specifically aimed at predicting the factors contributing to the severity of accidents involving truck and non-truck collisions in industrial zones. It considers a variety of aspects, including roadway characteristics, underlying assumptions of cause, crash characteristics, and weather conditions. Due to the fact that accident data is big data with specific characteristics and complexity, with the employment of machine learning in tandem with the Multi-variate Adaptive Regression Splines technique, we can make precise predictions to identify the factors influencing the severity of collision outcomes. The analysis demonstrates that various factors augment the severity of accidents involving trucks. These include darting in front of a vehicle, head-on collisions, and pedestrian collisions. Conversely, for non-truck related collisions, the significant factors that heighten severity are tailgating, running signs/signals, angle collisions, head-on collisions, overtaking collisions, pedestrian collisions, obstruction collisions, and collisions during overcast conditions. These findings illuminate the significant factors influencing the severity of accidents involving trucks and non-trucks. Such insights provide invaluable information for developing targeted road safety measures and policies, thereby contributing to the mitigation of injuries and fatalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groundwater risks driven by population growth and industrialization in metropolitan cities have become a worldwide problem. Faisalabad is Pakistan's third largest city with a population of more than 2 million and is renowned for its diverse industries. Many factories in the area dump their untreated effluent into nearby drainage systems, having a direct negative effect on the marine ecosystem. This research focuses on the Madhuana drain and Khurrianwala industrial region of Faisalabad to investigate groundwater quality status. Sixty water samples from groundwater bore wells and open wells were obtained, and all these samples were subjected to lab experiments for physical and chemical analysis. Sixteen physiochemical parameters, namely, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, carbonate, Ca2+, Fe, HCO3−, Cl−, Mg2+, SO24−, As, Cr, Cu, and Mn, were examined. To provide a comprehensive picture of water quality from a human perspective, we calculated the water quality index (WQI) by integrating 16 physiochemical criteria. The results revealed that a larger proportion had poor drinking quality due to direct releases of toxins by industries. It was observed that 87% of the water samples showed an unsuitable status of groundwater for drinking purposes in terms of pH, EC, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr. The results of this study could be used to build and construct wastewater treatment plant facilities for the Madhuana drain, reducing pollution loads on the drain and river, as well as contaminant seepage rates into groundwater. This study aims to investigate the distribution of radioactive elements in the Southern Industrial Zone in Jeddah City as a tool to assess radioactive hazards from both natural and artificial sources. A gamma-ray spectrometer was used to measure the concentrations of uranium, thorium, and potassium in addition to the total count radiation in a continuous mode all over the study area. However, because the study covers a large area, the gamma-ray survey was car-borne. The study area is classified into three zones (1, 2 and 3) according to their locations. These zones reflect some location anomalies containing a radiation dose rate more than the safe limit of 1 mSv/y (ICRP, 2000). The mean of total count radiation in the three zones 1, 2 and 3 are 1185, 888.7 and 868, respectively. The mean radiation dose in the three zones 1, 2 and 3 are 0.47, 1.2 and 0.99 mSv/y, respectively with standard deviation of 0.34, 0.43 and 0.44, respectively, while their ranges are 0.1–1.78, 0.12–3.23 and 0.11–3.08 mSv/y, respectively. By studying the Jeddah Industrial Area in the three zones, we were able to conclude that the effective doses assessed were more than 1 mSv/y, the overall global exposure limit for radiation, in the anomaly locations but less than the occupational exposure limit of 20 mSv/y. Job security is an essential theoretical framework to ensure the fundamental rights of workers in organizations or businesses. Studying aspects of job security in industrial zones, especially in the context of Covid-19, should be paid more attention. Analysis of fieldwork data in some industrial parks in Vietnam in 2018-2019 as well as national survey results by Vietnam's General Statistics Office in 2021 and 2022 show that despite the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, workers' job prospects remain positive. In the global pursuit of sustainable urban development, this study explored public support for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in urban industrial development, comparing Northwest China and New Zealand. Lanzhou residents exhibited a willingness to pay (WTP) USD 2.36 million for industrial NbS (INbS) and USD 3.18 million for Neighborhood NbS (NNbS), whereas Aucklanders' WTP was at USD 3.9 million and USD 9.8 million, respectively. The annual nonmarket values for Lanzhou's NNbS and INbS were 30.15 million and 6.65 million USD, and for Auckland, they were 80.14 million and 53.17 million USD, respectively. Aucklanders preferred housing near NbS areas, whereas Lanzhou residents chose locations close to workplaces, with age, gender, education, residency duration, and visit length significantly influencing NbS engagement. Middle-income and homeowner groups, especially middle-aged Lanzhou residents and Auckland bachelor graduates and employees, exhibited higher WTP for INbS and NNbS, with Lanzhou residents preferring WTP for stormwater wetlands of NNbS and Aucklanders favoring WTP for grass swales and permeable surfaces of INbS. Challenges in promoting INbS encompass costs and maintenance. Promoting INbS involves customized strategies for different demographics, legislative collaboration, pilot projects in disadvantaged areas, and aesthetic, demographic-specific designs. The safe development of chemical industries requires adequate control of the environmental sustainability of the areas where enterprises are located. The purpose of the article is to develop and test a methodology for solving the multicriteria problem of choosing industrial zones for the development of chemical industries using the method of an additive global criterion. The novelty of the methodology lies in the multi-criteria and complexity of the tool and the presence of a statistical base, which allows it to be used for various socio-economic purposes at all levels of government. As the main research tools, the methods of multi-criteria selection of objects, one-dimensional data scaling, additive convolution of criteria, and methods of multivariate statistical analysis for verifying the results obtained and making a decision were used. The article describes the mathematical apparatus of the technique for solving the multicriteria problem of selecting objects by the method of an additive global criterion. The solution algorithm provides for a three-level integration of particular indicators using the methods of mathematical processing of an array of different-dimensional values. The procedure for selecting the vectors of the criterion space makes it possible to select industrial zones and obtain a global criterion using the additive convolution method. In order to test the methodology, the problem of choosing industrial zones for the potential development of chemical industries in the Russian region was solved. For the development of chemical production, industrial zones have been selected that are included in the above-average environmental sustainability group: Bavlinskaya, Nurlatskaya, Bugulminskaya, and Leninogorskaya. Tendencies of decrease in ecological stability of the zones, which have relatively safe industries on their territory but are adjacent to the zones of location of environmentally unfavorable industries, are revealed. The materials of the article can be used in the development of intelligent systems for monitoring and controlling the development of chemical industries, which allow monitoring the level of environmental safety of industrial zones, identifying sources of negative environmental impact with pursuing decision-making on the organization and planning of production systems in the territorial space. Moscow as a world city combines territories with various functional content. At the same time, the complexity of the morphological structure of the capital is supplemented by the high dynamism of the socio-economic processes taking place in it. In this context, an important task is to assess the role of large infrastructure projects, intensifying the processes of transformation of the urban structure and in a short time changing the historically established functional roles of vast urban spaces. The article uses the data of mobile operators to analyze functional changes in the zone of influence of the largest urban megaproject – the Moscow Central Ring (MCC) from 2015 to 2018. The available information on mobile telephony about the distribution of the population at night and daytime allows us to characterize the degree of “dormancy” and “attractiveness” of urban areas near the MCC, and accordingly their functional roles. The analysis showed that during the period under review, the day and night population of 43 municipalities surrounding the MCC showed an equal increase of 0.35 million people with a significant differentiation of its pace in certain areas. The ratio between the day and night population of the areas, as well as its change from 2015 to 2018 allowed to distinguish the characteristic functional types of districts. The typology demonstrated that the role of the MCC in spatial development for the attractive territories of the center and subcenter of Moscow turned out to be significantly less noticeable than for areas located on the side of the MCC external to the city center. This influence was more replaceable in municipalities, where the railway ring became the first type of high-speed off-street transport, as well as in areas that have significant areas of industrial zones, the majority of the observed structural and functional movements in urban morphology are associated with the synergy of renovation.

In the developing countries industrial effluent is often improperly managed and/or disposed directly into public and private drains without treatment. Pakistan being an agricultural country, mostly relies on agro-based industries, Faisalabad is an industrial city featuring clusters of textile industries which have adverse effects on the environment. The present study was conducted to investigate the textile effluent quality levels in the Faisalabad. The effluent samples were collected in triplicate from three major industrial zones after a reconnaissance survey. The analysis of effluent samples showed a wide variation in level of temperature (14.4-36.2 °C), total dissolved solids (2022-3865 mg L-1), electrical conductivity (3.0-5.76 dS m-1), salinity (1.5-2.96), pH (7.2-11.3) total hardness (240-503 mg L-1), chloride (689-3608 mg L-1), nitrate (34.9-223 mg L-1), ammonium (4.5-43 mg L-1), and sodium adsorption ratio (14.1-33.4) using standard methods and latest equipment. The measured values of parameters were compared with the Punjab Environmental Quality Standards (PEQS) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards for precise assessment of their quality and suitability. It was found that almost all the selected parameters were exceeding the permissible limits from the available standards. Untreated effluent with higher concentration of pollutants makes the situation worse for safer disposal or wastewater irrigation. Based upon the analysis and measured data, it is strongly suggested to treat the effluent up to the standards before disposal to the drains which latter can be used for agriculture safely. This process of industrial zones site selection requires to fulfill requirements and standards, simultaneously reducing environmental and public health costs and maximizing technical and economic benefits. A geographic information system was used in this study to evaluate land suitability to propose suitable sites for industrial zones in Duhok district, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The defined parameters were classified into two groups, specifically, environmental and socioeconomic criteria. The information layers were prepared and were standardized into Boolean logic. The parameters maps were combined using the Boolean logic technique, and the suitability map was achieved on two classes including unsuitable and suitable. The results showed that only about 10% (104 Km2) of the study area was evaluated as suitable areas for industrial zones, which are mainly found in the north, northwest, and central parts of the study area. The results also illustrated that most of the industries within the study area have been located in inappropriate sites which have had a severe impact on the air quality of Duhok city. The safe development of chemical industries requires adequate control of the environmental sustainability of the areas where enterprises are located. The purpose of the article is to develop and test a methodology for solving the multicriteria problem of choosing industrial zones for the development of chemical industries using the method of an additive global criterion. The novelty of the methodology lies in the multi-criteria and complexity of the tool and the presence of a statistical base, which allows it to be used for various socio-economic purposes at all levels of government. As the main research tools, the methods of multi-criteria selection of objects, one-dimensional data scaling, additive convolution of criteria, and methods of multivariate statistical analysis for verifying the results obtained and making a decision were used. The article describes the mathematical apparatus of the technique for solving the multicriteria problem of selecting objects by the method of an additive global criterion. The solution algorithm provides for a three-level integration of particular indicators using the methods of mathematical processing of an array of different-dimensional values. The procedure for selecting the vectors of the criterion space makes it possible to select industrial zones and obtain a global criterion using the additive convolution method. In order to test the methodology, the problem of choosing industrial zones for the potential development of chemical industries in the Russian region was solved. For the development of chemical production, industrial zones have been selected that are included in the above-average environmental sustainability group: Bavlinskaya, Nurlatskaya, Bugulminskaya, and Leninogorskaya. Tendencies of decrease in ecological stability of the zones, which have relatively safe industries on their territory but are adjacent to the zones of location of environmentally unfavorable industries, are revealed. The materials of the article can be used in the development of intelligent systems for monitoring and controlling the development of chemical industries, which allow monitoring the level of environmental safety of industrial zones, identifying sources of negative environmental impact with pursuing decision-making on the organization and planning of production systems in the territorial space.

The article discusses the role of innovative entrepreneurship in the global transformation of the economy and society. A comparison is made of market and innovative entrepreneurship and an assessment is made of the role of the state, which is the main regulator of innovation activity and science-production-society relations. Innovative activity of domestic entrepreneurs is extremely low compared to their foreign counterparts. The article describes the main business development trends in the regional the economy and identified reasons for restraining innovative activity business structures.Innovative entrepreneurship is an actively developing topic not only at the level of managerial decisions, but also in the scientific sphere. The article reveals the main components of innovation in terms of the structural problems of the economy and searches for the main ways of developing innovations in the domestic economy.

Accumulation of heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) and arsenic in water and bottom sediments of the Srepok River in rainy and dry seasons has been assessed. Significant seasonal variations in the concentration of elements in water have been found. The Fe, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb content of sediments did not depend on the season, and the concentration of Cd was higher in the rainy season. At certain periods of time, the concentrations of these elements in river water exceeded those recommended by the national technical regulations of Vietnam: Fe, 2.3–9.5 times; Cu, 1.2–2.8 times; Zn, 1.2–4.5 times; Cd, 1.7–6.8 times; Pb, 1.1–17 times; and As, 1.1–3.7 times. The concentrations of all heavy metals and arsenic in the river water and bottom sediments of industrial zones tended to increase. The results showed, the examined elements can be divided into groups where their concentrations are closely interrelated. These groups are composed of Fe, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the river water, and of Cu, Zn, As, and Pb in sediments. The obtained data prove the necessity of monitoring the levels of heavy metals and arsenic in river water and bottom sediments of industrial zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Industrial action in export processing zones challenges the conventions of labour protest. Labour relations in domestic and foreign direct investment enterprises in industrial parks and export processing zones in Ho Chi Minh City were researched in 2018, with findings that divide into two areas of interest: (a) the ways 'innovation' in the economy has affected changes for the subjects involved in labour relations; (b) with strikes being a manifestation of conflict in labour relations, after a period of sharp increase (2011), there has been a decreasing number in recent years, but with changing characteristics. In particular, when a strike occurs now, the trade union which used to be the unique legal representative of all Vietnamese employees is less often favoured, and others are chosen by the employees to negotiate with the business owner. The aim of this study is to select the appropriate sites for the designation of future industrial zones in the province of Constantine, Algeria, using a geographic information system (GIS) and Remote Sensing, including the appropriate technical and environmental requirements. The identification of appropriate sites for the establishment of new industrial zones in alignment with a planning process based on a set of socio-economic and environmental information and instructions has become a key problem for planners. The factors involved in the selection of sites are classified into two categories (exclusion factors and appreciation factors) to be able to identify the most appropriate areas for future industrial facilities in the province in question. Egypt is positioned to become one of the most prolific countries in the emerging global economy, so it is important to put in place the infrastructure and logistics systems that will enable Egypt to play a real role as an African hub point of entry and exit for trade between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe in the dominant directions from south to north where oil and gas transit. Nearly 10% of the world trade is passing through the Suez Canal. An implementation strategy was prepared for the Suez Canal region aims to create an industrial and logistical spine, two integrated areas, two development areas, four ports, are underdeveloped. In order to explore these areas for foreign investment, a mass real estate appraisal study for industrial lands and ports was prepared with the aim of exploitation as usufruct for specified periods. Therefore, the paper studies the Suez Canal Development Project as an economic hub; then, it focuses on the methodology that used in the real estate appraisal study which had concluded to the pricing equations for each site taking into all various aspects. Today maritime economy recognizes the seas and oceans as the main driving force for the sustainable economic growth across the globe. Pakistan with its unique geographic location is blessed with approximately 1050 km long coastline and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covering an area of about 240,000 sq km. In a brief history of globalization, seaborne trade and sea ports have made significant contributions towards socioeconomic development, thereby strengthening economic ties among states of various regions. Similarly, Pakistan's Gwadar port emerges as an ideal hub port in the region due to its unique strategic placement to attract trade from Central Asia, Afghanistan, west China and other countries due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz (SoH), which is the main shipping route, and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Today, Gwadar's geostrategic positioning enables it to monitor and control the oil trade routes and Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs) between the regions of South Asia, West Asia, Africa and Central Asia. Gwadar's deep–sea port characteristic is one of the rare features which equips it to expand its operation to the 88 berths and capacity to anchor gigantic vessels from 100,000 DWT to 200,000 DWT. The working capacity of the Gwadar Port is equal to the Persian Gulf ports. This paper attempts to determine the potential and strength of the Gwadar Port as a growth catalyst for Pakistan as the country's international trade is directed through the sea. Geographers have long examined the assumption that women are locally constricted and what this means for women taking up of economic opportunities. These studies have provided valuable insights into the understanding of the spatial dimension of social exclusion. However, the investigation of the role of wider economic, physical and social contexts on women’s mobility and accessibility constraints has mainly concerned the countries in North America and Western Europe. Through a mixed methods study of two industrial zones in Turkey, this article looks at how women and men from different social backgrounds access the zones with the aim of identifying the specific constraints that women face in their everyday life in accessing economic opportunities. The results show that while gender seems to play a role in the choice of place of residence and the employers’ perception of time use, women’s socioeconomic and educational backgrounds seem to be more important predictors of their commuting patterns and access to the zones. The study confirms that gendered daily travel patterns are a useful unit of analysis for investigating unequal access to economic opportunities. It further argues that the complex nature of everyday mobilities of women should be interpreted in conjunction with the perceptions of employers on women’s work spaces and time use.

Measuring sustainability is an integral part of decision-making processes in order to promote sustainable development. The present paper focuses on sustainability indicators as these are measured on local level and explores two main issues: firstly, the subjective measurement of indicators focusing especially on social dimensions of sustainability, secondly, the incorporation of local perceptions in sustainability assessments. These two issues are explored in the Asopos River basin in Greece, an area where significant environmental degradation has been observed in the past decades and is also under financial pressure due to the ongoing national recession. A large-scale research study was conducted measuring environmental, economic and social indicators while, at a second stage, a model was developed, estimating new indicators that incorporate local communities' perceptions on what they considered as important for their area. The results of the study reveal that the most important indicators for the sustainable development of the area, according to locals' perceptions, are environmental quality as well as quality of life. By contrast, trust in local and central institutions and also local enterprises were not considered as important by locals. These results illustrate the importance of combining global and national scale assessment with locally focused social measurements of sustainability in order to better understand what is important for local communities prior to embarking on public policy planning. Industrial parks combine activities related to energy and resource consumption, emissions, waste generation, economic benefits, and regional development. The focus of this work is the path of transformation between the present and the vision of a sustainable city in the future. The increasing occurrence of large wildfires in Southern European countries calls for the adoption of more effective measures of fire prevention, to protect people and infrastructures, namely in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Previous research suggests that broadleaf forests could mitigate the effects of these wildfires due to their lower flammability. However, few attempts have been made to investigate the possibility of using broadleaf-based green firebreaks to protect infrastructures, as an alternative to current less ecologically and economically sustainable fuel reduction techniques. Here, we assess the relevance of a broadleaves fuel model in reducing fire hazard in the WUI, by analyzing a set of six Industrial Zones (IZs) in Central Portugal, severely affected by wildfires during the catastrophic fire season of 2017. We developed alternative scenarios for the spatial simulation of fire behavior, using a factorial combination of weather conditions (standard and extreme), buffer around each IZ (distances of 100 m and 500 m) and land cover (current and broadleaves fuel model). The simulations were grounded on real-world data obtained from reconstructed fire front isochrones and fieldwork. Our results suggest that replacing the flammable vegetation present in the WUI with broadleaf forests could reduce fireline intensity by up to five times, even under extreme weather conditions. This reduction occurs subtly as the broadleaf cover interface is expanded from 100 m to 500 m. Our results show that fires that exceed the suppression capacity in pine and eucalypt forests (>4 m flame length) can be effectively suppressed in broadleaf forests under extreme fire weather (1.4 m flame length) and easily suppressed in broadleaf forests in standard weather (0.8 m flame length). Due to significant changes in land use and extreme weather events, future large wildfires could occur again in Portugal. In this regard, our results corroborate the urgent need to discuss forest management in the country, which has already proven to be insufficient to prevent fire disasters in the WUI. In the years after Islamic Revolution, establishment of industrial zones in rural areas has been considered as a policy for diversification of rural activities. Socio-economic structure of rural areas has been transformed by establishment of above mentioned industrial zones. The present paper has considered the consequences of industrial zones establishment in rural areas with special reference to Kuhpaye Industrial Zone. Kuhpaye Industrial Zone is located in Jabal rural district including 13 villages. This district has been faced with emigration process. The main aims of research has been analyzing the role of Kuhpaye Industrial Zone in creation of job opportunities, increasing income, reducing rural-urban migration process and finally socio-economic development of rural area. Therefore the main questions of research have been as follows: Has establishment of Kuhpaye Industrial Zone created job and income opportunities? Has it resulted to reducing rural –urban emigration? Has it led to socio-economic development of the area? Required data has been collected through field study including observation, interview, completing questionnaire and some documents. 205 questionnaires have been completed by the research sample society which has been selected randomly. Collected data has been analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and SPSS. There has been a negative relation between Kuhpaye Industrial Zone and agricultural activities as a whole (farming & animal husbandry) in the area, because firstly, agricultural and grass lands are mostly devoted to industrial land use, Secondly, incomes from agricultural activities are unable to compete with industrial wages. Therefore active human labor force is transformed to industrial sector. Kuhpaye Industrial Zone has also changed the farm system pattern. This means that the previous farming system was labor intensive, including Cotton, sugar beets and cucurbits, but nowadays, the use of agricultural technology has been increased as a result of human labor limitation, therefore, Beans, lentils and wheat are the main elements of farm system. The direction of population emigration has been chanced by established industrial zone. Before the industrial establishment, the population of these rural areas migrated to cities such as Isfahan and Tehran, but today, they are migrating to Kuhpaye which has led to Kuhpaye urban population growth and evacuation of some rural centers. Kupayeh urban population was 3653 in 1996 but has increased to 6000 in 2012. On the contrary, 53 villages have lost their population and this process is going to continue .The people of the area have been divided in two groups for accessing to services. The first group which is the employers of industrial units has access to educational, transport and welfare services. But farmers in villages have not suitable access to required services, most of them are unsatisfied. Cultural characteristics of the area have been changed by Kuhpaye industrial established zone. Local dialect has been substituted by Persian language speaking traditional behavioral pattern has been changed. There was not any computer in the area until 2000, but currently a considerable number of rural households use computer at their homes. The findings show that establishment of this industrial zone has not reinforced the linkage between industrial and agricultural sectors. As a result, it has not led to animal husbandry and agricultural development. The economic effects of industrial zone establishment have been more than its social and cultural effects. Using durable consumption goods, changes in food consumption patterns, extension of participatory dimension, increasing job and better income opportunities, improving health services, and better access to education possibilities has been the important consequences of industrial zone in rural area. Due to establishment of industrial zone, emigration has reduced and persistence of rural population has been increased. Job opportunities and income of rural dwellers are increased and the region is moving towards economic and social development.
