Economic science provides a rich methodological toolkit for sustainable development combined with the principles of the circular economy and green marketing. The practical adaptation of a set of assessment tools helped the realisation of the goal of this study in the form of the systematisation of interaction factors between economic growth and environmental branding of industrial companies in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Descriptive models were used to assess the economic and technological state of enterprises and to analyse the effectiveness of capital investments for the implementation of green technology projects and social environmental investments. In the course of research of the population's requests to manufacturers of industrial products, it was found out that the requirements to the environmental characteristics of finished products have increased, and the price of ecological products is of concern. Producers and end consumers can be brought closer together through eco-branding, creation of special platforms for green integration participants. To unlock the reserves of economic growth, it is proposed that green investment flows with the participation of industrial capital should be intensified in order to increase investments in the eco-cultural transformation of eco-consumers of the new generation. The article presents an analysis and assessment of the Republic of Tyva as one of the largest producers of meat and meat products in Russia. The Republic has regional characteristics that are associated with climatic, environmental features, as well as economic and political factors. Recently, in Russia there has been an increase in the consumption of meat industry products, while this figure lags significantly behind developed countries: 120 kg/person in the USA, 80 kg/person in the EU, 63 kg/person in Russia. In recent years, there has been a positive trend in terms of import substitution of meat and meat products, however, a high share of imports still remains, exceeding the threshold level of food security. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the development of industrial production, as well as increasing the competitiveness of meat industry enterprises, especially at the regional level. The article examines the current state of the meat industry in the Republic and the factors that determine its competitiveness. Purpose: to conduct a study of the current state and identify factors that determine the competitiveness of meat industry enterprises in the Republic of Tyva. Methods: analytical methods were used in the research process. Results. The results of the study show that in order to develop and increase the competitiveness of meat industry enterprises in the Republic of Tyva, it is necessary to introduce effective management methods at enterprises, introduce modern innovative equipment and technologies, as well as provide government support. Scope of results. The article offers a number of recommendations for managers of meat industry enterprises in the republic who want to improve the performance of their enterprises and increase competitiveness, which includes investing in sustainable initiatives, establishing clear goals and objectives and using modern digital solutions, interacting with regional executive authorities.

This study investigated how trade openness influenced the connection between industrialization and emissions of carbon in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We utilized purposive sampling technique to select 28 SSA countries from 2003 to 2021. The study used Generalised Methods of Moments as the main estimator and Pooled Mean Group as the robustness estimator for the empirical analysis. The findings revealed that industrialization positively impacts carbon emissions in SSA nations. Additionally, the link between industrialization and carbon emissions in SSA nations is positively moderated by trade openness. The findings validate the necessity for governments in Sub-Saharan African nations to restructure their industrialization initiatives in order to lower emissions of carbon. Additionally, strict measures should be implemented to regulate free trade in the SSA region.

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is one of edible and nutritious vegetable crops in the world. The objective of this study was to identify tomato value chain actors, their roles and linkages, as well as to estimate the benefit share of tomato value chain actors in Seka Chekorsa District, Jimma Zone and Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Semi structured interview schedules, focus group discussion and key informant interviews were used to collect first-hand information. Two-stage sampling procedure was employed to select 158 tomato producers randomly. Likewise, 20 consumers and 21 Traders were selected randomly and purposively, respectively. To analysis the data, descriptive statistics, value chain mapping and market margin were used. In the study area, the primary tomato value chain actors included input suppliers, producers, local collectors, retailers and consumers. Sinke Bank, Harbu Microfinance, Seka Chekorsa District Agriculture Office, District Trade Office and Non-governmental Organizations were key tomato value chain supporters. There is poor linkage among value chain actors and poor coordination of activities. Producers earned maximum gross profit in channel I (producer–consumer), which was 382.54 birr/qt and the lowest gross profit in channel III (producer–local collectors– retailer–consumer) and channel IV (producer–local collector–consumer), which was 111.07birr/qt. From traders, local collectors took higher gross profit (224.93birr/qt) in channel IV (producer–local collector–consumer). So, it is better for producers to sell their product through channel I (producer–consumer), and imperative to develop ground rules that bind all chain actors together by changing their outlook.

‘Profound changesunseen in a century’ superimpose the complex background of weak global economic growth. Employment affects a country's economic development and social stability, and is an urgent issue that every country needs to solve. This study examines the impact of digital innovation on the absorption capacity of manufacturing jobs, using data from listed companies from 2011 to 2021. The mechanism test indicates that digital innovation fosters enterprise employment through three principal avenues: enhanced total factor productivity, alleviation of enterprise financing constraints, and expansion of the market size. A heterogeneity analysis indicates that the impact of digital innovation is more pronounced in low-technology firms, state-owned firms, and technology-intensive firms. Further analysis revealed that the level of enterprise digital innovation positively affects the employment of high-tech and medium-skilled labour, while having no significant impact on low-skilled labour. In addition, the impact of digital innovation on employment in manufacturing enterprises is not a simple linear relationship, but there is a double threshold effect. When the level of digital innovation reaches a certain threshold, the effect of promoting employment becomes more significant. This study enriches the literature on the impact of digital innovation on employment and provides a useful reference for local governments on how to alleviate employment pressures.

The financial embargo has a special impact on the economic systems of oil and gas regions. This is explained by the increased foreign trade turnover of oil and gas regions, as well as the high capital intensity of the oil and gas industry, a long period of return on financial investments, and the high profitability of innovative investments. The purpose of the study is to identify various aspects of the problem of investing in fixed assets in oil and gas regions, find ways, forms and methods of investment stimulation of their innovative production development and assess the possibilities of transitioning to new technological structures in the conditions of a financial embargo and the transformation of the global energy balance. Methods of regression analysis of the structure and dynamics of investment in fixed capital of organizations in the oil and gas regions of the Volga Federal District were used and polynomial trend lines were constructed until 2030. An economic analysis of the structure of investment in fixed capital of oil and gas regions was made by sources of financing, types of fixed assets, forms of ownership, types of economic activity, as well as a regression analysis of the dynamics and forecast of the balance (receipt minus withdrawal) of foreign direct investment in oil and gas regions according to the balance of payments of the Russian Federation. The result of the study was the development and justification of a system of priority factors for creating a favorable investment climate in oil and gas regions to increase their resistance to the conditions of the financial embargo and the economic transformation of the global energy balance.

Many firms vie to attain a strategic bottleneck position in their industry, as it promises superior value appropriation over an extended period. Using a mixed-methods approach, we investigated the power dynamics between bottleneck and challenger segments in the airline ticket distribution sector. Our study of the bottleneck formed by the global distribution system (GDS) firms reveals the mechanisms that these firms employed to maintain power, as well as the mechanisms that airlines in the challenger segment used to attain power. These mechanisms strongly influenced the momentum of power shifts as the industry evolved towards greater modularization; we show how they worked recursively in a process of power distribution dynamics during that evolution. In addition, these mechanisms explain the dynamics at work between the incumbent and challenger segments, with airlines increasing the pressure to modularize and the GDS firms resisting that pressure. Our findings contribute to the literature on industry architectural change and industry evolution by providing a comprehensive understanding of the power dynamics that affect when and how strategic bottlenecks dissolve. This study examines the significance of foreign direct investment (FDI) and market characteristics both within and across industries in determining the productivity and efficiency of firms. This study also measures the total factor productivity (TFP) growth and its components for both foreign and domestic firms. Using Indonesian annual medium and large manufacturing establishments surveys, wholesale price index, and input-output (I-O) table, the authors calculate the horizontal and vertical spillovers and undertake stochastic frontier analysis to estimate the production and inefficiency function. The results show that the less concentrated market of domestic firms within the industry and suppliers reduces productivity and efficiency, while domestic buyers' less concentrated markets could have the opposite effect. Most domestic and foreign firms still experience deterioration in TFP growth. The policy recommendation is to encourage firms to improve technological progress, such as upgrading machines and investing in human resources, by providing training workers aiming at mastering better managerial expertise. Policymakers should also ensure that the benefits of FDI spillovers outweigh their disadvantages. Impact statement: This study contributes to extending recent empirical literature on the possibility of spillovers in the Indonesian automotive industry not only from foreign firms within the industry, but also from potential externalities arising from downstream and upstream markets using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). Generally, studies on FDI spillovers examine the role of FDI in explaining the efficiency differences measured by the distance to the frontier; however, few studies consider the impact of efficiency improvement and technological progress on productivity gains from FDI. This study attempts to capture the sources of productivity gains through both channels. The other studies have never discussed, based on author knowledge, the impact of spillovers regarding domestic firms' specific market concentration as competitors, buyers, or sellers to foreign firms on efficiency and productivity.This study aims to fill this gap and analyze the importance of market characteristics in determining spillovers, VTI, trade openness, and foreign ownership. Previous studies on market concentration employ the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), while this study utilizes the relative entropy coefficient (RE) to provide another approach to measure market concentration.In this study, the industry-specific characteristic is controlled using the inclusion of firm size and industrial dummy variables. The SFA estimation results are calculated to measure output elasticity with respect to each input and total factor productivity (TFP) growth. This paper investigated the technical and allocative efficiency of commercial banks in Ethiopia. The analysis was based on unbalanced panel data of 19 banks over the period of 1990-2022. The study has applied shadow pricing approach to estimate and decompose the overall cost inefficiency into technical and allocative components. Findings reveal that publicly owned commercial bank is technically more efficient than privately owned commercial banks. Evidence also found that, on average, small and recently established privately owned banks are technically more efficient than other large private owned banks in Ethiopia. All banks are found allocative inefficiency due to over-utilization of loanable funds and physical capital relative to labor input. The overall result also shows that greater cost saving in public owned commercial bank in Ethiopia could be achieved by optimizing input use, while such cost advantage in private owned banks could be attained by improving managerial efficiency. Impact Statement: In developing countries like Ethiopia where secondary financial markets are tiny or non-existent, promoting safe and robust commercial banking system is an important prerequisite for economic growth and development. The safety and soundness of the banking system are inextricably linked to economic efficiency of individual commercial banks. This study estimate and decompose cost efficiency of Ethiopian commercial banks into technical and allocative efficiencies (inefficiencies). The results of the study provide a valuable information to the shareholders, government and regulators in designing policies that improve the profitability and competitiveness of commercial banks. In the sustainable economy, consumer preferences are gradually beginning to prioritize environmentally friendly products and services. A sustainable economy is directly linked to the growth of consumer welfare and the environmental culture. The success of environmental projects is largely determined by approaches to the management of complex interconnected objects, which operate in developed industrial regions. In this regard, we formulate the purpose of this study, which is to generalize approaches to and to improve the mechanisms of the ecological branding of the industrial complex of a region through conscious ESG transformation. For this purpose, we have studied the statistics and principles of the management systems of Kazakhstani companies and their stakeholders. The focus was on the Pavlodar industrial region, where metallurgical production, petrochemicals, the agro-industrial sector, the banking sector, and logistics hubs are developed. The vision and the mechanisms that can influence the development of the export potential of products with an "ecological brand" were studied. A survey of export-oriented organizations helped to identify the behavioral attributes of the "new generation eco-consumer", namely, a conscious desire to reduce the negative impact of production and economic activities on the environment. The theoretical significance of this study helps to reveal the influence of the ecological principles of the organization of modern production on the speed of transition to green technologies. Its practical significance is seen in the formation of a system for measuring the level of readiness of companies to promote the ecological branding of a region's industry outside its country. The current paper aims at studying the technological development and the economic growth related with it from the perspective of the development of human brains and cognitive abilities of people, thus linking it to the educational framework, strategies, and policies, which a country sets as a basis for such development. The paper focuses on the technological development of Bulgaria and relating it to the country’s educational development. The research question set in the current paper is if and how technological development of a country is influenced by its educational policies in the field of higher education. Main results of the study show that Bulgaria has implemented a number of educational changes during the past 30 years, arguing that doing so will assist the nation achieve higher levels of socioeconomic development. There are still significant educational inequalities based on location and socioeconomic background, and overall productivity increases have not yet fully translated into sustainable and equitable growth in Bulgaria. We use this framework in a scenario where Mexico, China, USA, and Brazil interact under two tariffs scenarios. The optimal manufacturing locations due to tariff levels variations are highlighted through this approach.

The industrial sector has a crucial position in the economic growth process. However, industrial production falls before reaching the desired level, and countries abandon the objective of industrialization at an early stage. The transformation of agricultural economies into industrial economies over time is the first step in the development of the three-sector theory. It is argued that economic growth will occur as a result of the formation of a country's physical capital accumulation. In this framework, the Kaldor hypothesis was investigated by many researchers. In this study, it has been investigated how and in what way the industrial value-added will be affected by physical and human capital accumulation. For this purpose, as a result of the "Driscoll-Kraay Standard Error Estimator" obtained from the annual data of 34 OECD countries for 1996 and 2018, it was found that the improvements in physical capital increase the industrial value-added. This paper contributes to the understanding of how the environment, ethics, values, and historical contingencies shape public policy. It explains the accomplishment of petroleum resource management in the small open economy of Norway. The study is conducted by mapping policy decisions and the arguments behind them regarding environmental and ethical issues. This is done by studying available governmental and parliamentary papers along with statements from politicians and central governmental officials. The paper also seeks to illuminate some of the decisions by quantitative measures. The paper firstly describes a model of Ricardian resource rent. Secondly, it investigates the set of values that were in place before the petroleum production started in the 1970s, as described in public documents. An important argument was to build a “qualitatively better society” for the benefit of the people. Thirdly, it traces the historical roots of these values by examining historical sources.The main findings are that success lies in understanding the ethics behind the environmental resource rent harvesting of this non-renewable natural resource. The paper concludes that the focus on the natural environment and resource rent management can be attributed to popular values built on historical traditions. According to them, the state and the trust between the state and its citizens played key roles in shaping the policy. The careful policy can be illustrated by the fact that Norway has managed to build one of the largest sovereign funds in the world worth USD 1,200 billion for use by future generations. Only 3% of its value, significantly less than its historical net profit, should be used annually.

Abstract Currently, the world is faced with two fundamental issues of great importance, namely climate change and the coronavirus pandemic. These are intimately involved with the need to control climate change and the need to switch from high carbon, unsustainable economies to low carbon economies. Inherent in this approach are the concepts of the bioeconomy and the Green Industrial Revolution. The article addresses both issues, but it, principally, focusses on the development of the bioeconomy. It considers how nations are divided in relation to the use of biotechnology and synthetic biology in terms of their bioeconomy strategies. The article addresses, as a central theme, the nature and role of engineering biology in these developments. Engineering biology is addressed in terms of BioDesign, coupled with high levels of automation (including AI and machine learning) to increase reproducibility and reliability to meet industrial standards. This lends itself to distributed manufacturing of products in a range of fields. Engineering biology is a platform technology that can be applied in a range of sectors. The bioeconomy, as an engine for economic growth is addressed—in terms of moving from oil‐based economies to bio‐based economies—using biomass, for example, using selected lignocellulosic waste as a feedstock.

Abstract The criteria of economic, social, and environmental sustainability defined by the United Nations and consolidated in Agenda 2030 must become a ‘lighthouse’ to promote the use of digital technologies as an essential tool for sustainable development. Thus, the role of decision makers must therefore be oriented to promote technological development towards a sustainable world. However, any technological innovation, even the best, can give negative effects if not applied with a perspective on sustainability. This is increasingly evident with the growth of globalization. Thus, the aim of the present research is to identify challenges to achieve Circular Economy and Bioeconomy in a digital era and to define a blueprint for a ‘digicircular’ transformation. An integrated and interdisciplinary framework is proposed to prioritize digital capabilities which are hindering the digicircular economy implementation. An interdisciplinary and multicriteria tool to enable a digicircular model is developed. Bloomberg's environmental and Corporate Knights Global Sustainability Score which use private and public information from companies served for define the research model.

A theoretical model was constructed to investigate the conditions that a large retailer must satisfy to increase the quality of the retailer-owned brands towards a greater number of groceries. The key result shows that the restraint given by a vertical integration scheme (producer-distributor) is relaxed for a higher quality-production cost ratio under the assumption of modelling with endogenous quality. Another finding is that the national brand´s production is not altered, which is explained by the fact that this brand is demanded by consumers with high willingness to pay for it. However, the wholesale price decreases and hence the manufacturer's profit always falls as the quality of own brands rises. This is consistent with the argument that the retailer improves its negotiation capacity with the private manufacturer when it sells an own brand that is a close substitute for the manufacturer's label, which always forces the wholesale price of the branded product down. Searching for better efficient energy consumption, actions aimed at induction motors replacement have been consolidated as one of the main investments toward improve energy efficiency. For countries of wide range in electricity tariffs caused by geographic issues, industrial companies operating in different regions have difficulty to define how to direct the investment for energy efficiency actions between your industrial facilities. Thus, this paper aims to present how to direct the financial resources to perform the electric motors replacement to only one industrial facility from techno economic analysis through simulation of different scenarios for each case. Three regions of Brazil named Southeast, Midwest and Northeast were chosen for this analysis due to the highlight in their electricity tariffs characteristics. Regional aspects were taken into account, e.g., electricity escalation rate and electricity tariff as well as technical issues related to how limit the load of the new motors with reduced rated power after replacement. The results are promising because the cost-effectiveness of motors replacement in a medium-size industrial company always profitable regardless economic variations. The higher net savings defines what facilities in different regions of Brazil will have its motors replaced. So, the cost-effectiveness of motors replacement increases while electricity escalation rate, tariff and motor partial load increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates the relationship between competition policy, industrial policy, and the theoretical differences between them. The purpose of this study is to examine the contribution of game theory in the dual evolution of industrial economics since its emergence in the 1970s to the early 2020s. In the late 1970s, many game theory tools were incorporated into the industrial economic analysis; in the beginning, industrial economists made changes in game theory in order to adapt it to their own theories and then added this to their toolbox. In this regard, the present study is divided into three periods. The first period is the 1980s which is characterized by the existence of a unique competition policy without the presence of industrial policy.The second period, from the late 1980s to the late 1990s, is characterized by a combination of competition and industrial policy to meet and develop international competitions. The third period relates to 2000-2020, with the highlight of this period being the crisis of 2008 and 2009 and the restructuring of the declining industry to deal with economic and financial crisis. Since this period has not been over yet, a comprehensive description of emerging industrial and competition policy cannot be provided. However, some of the prominent trends can be anticipated, including the persistence, continuity, and implementation of industrial policy pertaining to the late 1970s. In this period, innovation-based policies will be strengthened and game-based industrial economy will continue to evolve.
