Most microplastics (MPs) end up in the biosolids produced in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and can pose contamination risks when the biosolids are applied to agriculture. This study evaluated the impact of mesophilic anaerobic digestion on the fate of MPs in WWTP sludge. For this, two laboratory-scale anaerobic digesters were operated in parallel, consisting of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and a membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) equipped with an ultrafiltration membrane to decouple the hydraulic and sludge retention times. Both digesters were continuously fed with mixed sludge from a municipal WWTP. The results showed a significant reduction in the MP concentration, with the AnMBR having the higher MP removal efficiency (88.6% vs. 62.1%) and obtaining a higher percentage of biomethanisation (58.3% vs. 43.7%). Polypropylene (PP) and polyacrylonitrile were the main polymers in the mixed sludge, while PP and polyethylene were the dominant polymers in the digested samples. The MP particles in all the samples were predominantly in the 500-104 μm size range. The amount of methane released to the atmosphere from the Nord Stream subsea pipeline leaks remains uncertain, as reflected in a wide range of estimates 1-18 . A lack of information regarding the temporal variation in atmospheric emissions has made it challenging to reconcile pipeline volumetric (bottom-up) estimates 1-8 with measurement-based (top-down) estimates 8-18 . Here we simulate pipeline rupture emission rates and integrate these with methane dissolution and sea-surface outgassing estimates 9,10 to model the evolution of atmospheric emissions from the leaks. We verify our modelled atmospheric emissions by comparing them with top-down point-in-time emission-rate estimates and cumulative emission estimates derived from airborne 11 , satellite 8,12-14 and tall tower data. We obtain consistency between our modelled atmospheric emissions and top-down estimates and find that 465 ± 20 thousand metric tons of methane were emitted to the atmosphere. Although, to our knowledge, this represents the largest recorded amount of methane released from a single transient event, it is equivalent to 0.1% of anthropogenic methane emissions for 2022. The impact of the leaks on the global atmospheric methane budget brings into focus the numerous other anthropogenic methane sources that require mitigation globally. Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology has great advantages for treating urban wastewaters, but, when irrigation cannot be applied and the effluent is discharged in a sensitive zone, a post-treatment of this effluent is needed for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Under this scenario, ion exchange processes represent one of the most promising technologies for treating this effluent. Ion exchange technology allows to meet discharge limits and to recover these nutrients in a highly concentrated stream. In this work, the technical feasibility of using a commercial resin for phosphorus recovery and a natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) for nitrogen recovery was evaluated. Purolite FerrIX A33E resin removed phosphate from the AnMBR permeate within 500 Bed Volumes (BVs) with a maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) of 2,1 mg P-PO 4 /g resin. Regeneration of the resin (2% NaOH 2% NaCl) recovered over 95% of the phosphorous retained, achieving a concentration of 316,7 mg P-PO 4 /L in the regeneration solution. In the absence of a long-term study, the resin showed a stable adsorption capacity during 16 cycles of saturation-regeneration. Clinoptilolite removed nitrogen within 139 BVs obtaining a q max of 3,68 mg N-NH4/g zeolite. 97 % of the retained N-NH 4 was recovered in the regeneration stage (0,8% NaOH) with an average concentration of 577 mg N-NH 4 /L. Although Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) have been widely adopted as important metrics for guiding scientific and policy decisions, the Earth Observation (EO) and Land Surface and Hydrologic Model (LSM/HM) communities have yet to treat terrestrial ECVs in an integrated manner. To develop consistent terrestrial ECVs at regional and continental scales, greater collaboration between EO and LSM/HM communities is needed. An essential first step is assessing the LSM/HM simulation uncertainty. To that end, we introduce a new hydrological reference dataset that comprises a range of 19 existing LSM/HM simulations that represent the current state-of-the-art of our LSM/HMs. Simulations are provided on a daily time step, covering Europe, notably the Rhine and Po river basins, alongside the Tugela river basin in Africa, and are uniformly formatted to allow comparisons across simulations. Furthermore, simulations are comprehensively validated with discharge, evapotranspiration, soil moisture and total water storage anomaly observations. Our dataset provides valuable information to support policy development and serves as a benchmark for generating consistent terrestrial ECVs through the integration of EO products., (© 2024. This work describes a comprehensive assessment of operating parameters of a bench-scale electrodialysis (ED) plant for nutrient concentration from an Anaerobic Membrane BioReactor (AnMBR) effluent. The ED bench-scale plant serves a dual purpose. Firstly, to generate a concentrated stream with a high nutrient content, and secondly, to produce high-quality reclaimed water in the diluted stream, both sourced from real wastewater coming from the effluent of an AnMBR. Two sets of experiments were conducted: 1) short-term experiments to study the effect of some parameters such as the applied current and the type of anionic exchange membrane (AEM), among others, and 2) a long-term experiment to verify the feasibility of the process using the selected parameters. The results showed that ED produced concentrated ammonium and phosphate streams using a 10-cell pair stack with 64 cm 2 of unitary effective membrane area, working in galvanostatic mode at 0.24 A, and operating with an Acid-100-OT anionic exchange membrane. Concentrations up to 740 mg/L and 50 mg/L for NH 4 -N and PO 4 -P, respectively, were achieved in the concentrated stream along with removal efficiencies of 70% for ammonium and 60% for phosphate in the diluted stream. Controlling drinking water treatment processes is essential to address water contamination and the adaptability of certain pathogenic protozoa. Sometimes, standard treatment methods and chlorine disinfection may prove insufficient in eliminating pathogenic protozoa. However, ultraviolet (UV) radiation has proved to be more effective than chlorine. This study aims to characterize the eukaryotic community of a drinking water treatment plant that applies a final UV disinfection treatment, focusing on pathogenic protozoa. Fifty water samples (raw water, before and after UV treatment) were evaluated to comply with regulation parameters and identify relevant protozoa. Despite physicochemical and microbiological parameters meeting the regulation, some potentially pathogenic protozoa, such as Blastocystis or Cryptosporidium, were still detected in very low relative abundances in treated water. It was found for the first time in Spain the pathogenic amoebae Naegleria fowleri in one river water, which was not found after the treatment. Moreover, Blastocystis subtypes ST1-ST6 were detected in this study in raw, before and after UV water samples. Blastocystis was only found in 2 two samples after UV treatment, with a very low abundance (≤0.02%). The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater has been studied in the last years. The high efficiency of their removal from wastewater is linked to their transfer to the sludge. In this work, the effect of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on aerobic digestion was evaluated and these MPs were monitored, characterizing them by three different techniques. Two parallel batch digesters were monitored. AD-Control (meaning Aerobic Digester) operated as a reference, with no external HDPE particles, whereas these polymeric fragments were introduced to the second aerobic digester (AD-HDPE) using ring pulls as microplastic support. FTIR, Raman spectroscopies and fluorescence analysis of these microparticles showed some relevant results that should be highlighted. Higher fluorescence appeared after 7 days in the digester. It coincided with an increase of active volatile suspended solids (AVSS) in the AD-HDPE, which means that an increase of the microbial activity took place. Despite the presence of HDPE particles in the sludge, the digester performance was not compromised. Besides, the HDPE particles did not affect the microbial diversity (Shannon index) of the bacterial community at the end of the experiment compared to the bacterial community of the aerobic digester control tank. Human urine has a high chemical oxygen demand (COD) content which makes anaerobic treatments potentially appropriate for the management of yellow waters, allowing for energy recovery. However, its high N content makes this treatment challenging. The present work studied the viability of performing an anaerobic digestion process for COD valorization on a real (not synthetic) urine stream at laboratory scale. To deal with nitrogen inhibition, two different ammonia extraction systems were proposed and tested. With them, a proper evolution of acidogenesis and methanogenesis was observed. Nitrogen was recovered in the form of ammonium sulphate, which could be used for agriculture, in two different ways: ammonia extraction from the urine stream before feeding the reactor and in situ extraction in the reactor. The first method, which proved to be a better strategy consisted in a desorption process (NaOH addition, air bubbling and acid (H 2 SO 4 ) absorption column, HCl for final pH adjustment) whereas the in situ extraction in the reactor consisted of an acid (H 2 SO 4 ) absorption column installed in the biogas recycling line of both reactors. Stable methane production over 220 mL/g COD was achieved and methane content in the biogas was stable around 71%.

Background: Detecting Helicobacter pylori in fecal samples is easier and more comfortable than invasive techniques, especially in children. Thus, the objective of the present work was to detect H. pylori in feces from children by molecular methods as an alternative for diagnostic and epidemiological studies., Methods: Forty-five fecal samples were taken from pediatric patients who presented symptoms compatible with H. pylori infection. HpSA test, culture, real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), direct viable count associated with FISH (DVC-FISH), and Illumina-based deep-amplicon sequencing (DAS) were applied., Results: No H. pylori colonies were isolated from the samples. qPCR analysis detected H. pylori in the feces of 24.4% of the patients. In comparison, DVC-FISH analysis showed the presence of viable H. pylori cells in 53.3% of the samples, 37% of which carried 23S rRNA mutations that confer resistance to clarithromycin. After DAS, H. pylori -specific 16S rDNA sequences were detected in 26 samples. In addition, DNA from H. hepaticus was identified in 10 samples, and H. pullorum DNA was detected in one sample., Conclusion: The results of this study show the presence of H. pylori , H. hepaticus , and H. pullorum in children's stools, demonstrating the coexistence of more than one Helicobacter species in the same patient. The DVC-FISH method showed the presence of viable, potentially infective H. pylori cells in a high percentage of the children's stools. These results support the idea that fecal-oral transmission is probably a common route for H. pylori and suggest possible fecal-oral transmission of other pathogenic Helicobacter species.

Sedimentary records help chronologically identify anthropogenic contamination in environmental systems. This study analysed dated sediment cores from L'Albufera Lake (Valencia, Spain), to assess the occurrence of heavy metals (HMs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), pesticides and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The results evidence the continuing vertical presence of all types of contaminants in this location. The sediment age was difficult to establish. However, the presence of shells together with an historical estimation and the knowledge of sedimentary rates could help. HMs contents are higher in the upper layer reflecting the most recent increase of the industrial and agricultural practices in the area since the middle 20th century. Higher availability index of these HMs in the upper sediment layers is associated with point and diffuse contamination sources in the area. PAHs and OPFRs were homogeneous distributed through the sediments with few exceptions such as phenanthrene in the North and fluoranthene in the South. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) were detected throughout the sediment core while short-chain PFASs (except perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA)) were detected only in the top layer. Pesticides and PPCPs showed appreciable down-core mobility. The vertical concentration profiles of organic contaminants did not exhibit a clear trend with depth, then, it is difficult to develop a direct relationship between sediment age and contaminant concentrations, and to elucidate the historical trend of contamination based on dated sediment core. The chronological information provided by sediment cores about the beginning and evolution of anthropogenic contaminants is crucial for understanding the influence of humans on the environment. The dataset provides information about the vertical distribution of heavy metals (HMs), metalloids and various organic contaminants (OCs) including contemporary contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides; as well as persistent organic contaminants (POPs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in sediment cores of two different sampling areas (North and South) of L'Albufera lake. Additional information about the 14 C-data of the organic matter present in the different layers of the sediment cores, and the 14 C-data of the seashells found in some of them are shown. The dataset includes physico-chemical analyses of sediment characteristics at the different selected depth levels such as Organic Carbon (C org ), Inorganic Carbon (IC), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Sulphur (TS) and texture. Furthermore, ecological risk assessment of these contaminants in surface sediment layers is performed to ascertain is potential toxicity. Biofilms, constituting over 95 % of the biomass in drinking water distribution systems, form an ecosystem impacting both the aesthetic and microbiological quality of water. This study investigates the microbiome of biofilms within a real-scale drinking water distribution system in eastern Spain, utilizing amplicon-based metagenomics. Forty-one biofilm samples underwent processing and sequencing to analyze both bacterial and eukaryotic microbiomes, with an assessment of active biomass. Genus-level analysis revealed considerable heterogeneity, with Desulfovibrio, Ralstonia, Bradyrhizobium, Methylocystis, and Bacillus identified as predominant genera. Notably, bacteria associated with corrosion processes, including Desulfovibrio, Sulfuricella, Hyphomicrobium, and Methylobacterium, were prevalent. Potentially pathogenic bacteria such as Helicobacter, Pseudomonas, and Legionella were also detected. Among protozoa, Opisthokonta and Archaeplastida were the most abundant groups in biofilm samples, with potential pathogenic eukaryotes (Acanthamoeba, Naegleria, Blastocystis) identified. Interestingly, no direct correlation between microbiota composition and pipe materials was observed. Nitrate pollution in aquifers is a global concern. Spain has developed a national strategy to recover nitrate polluted aquifers aligned with the European Union (EU) policies, specifically through the water planning under the EU Water Framework Directive. River basin management plans use PATRICAL model results to define the maximum nitrogen surplus in each polluted aquifer for the first time. The maximum nitrogen surplus allows to reach the good status in each aquifer and the model provides the number of years required. Around 30% of the aquifers in Spain is currently heavily polluted by nitrates. Model results show that 90% of these aquifers can be recovered in next 6-12 years by increasing nitrogen use efficiency and reducing nitrogen losses around 50%, which is in line with the EU Farm to Fork Strategy. The remaining aquifers require additional reductions to achieve the good status. Surface water (SW) quality is particularly vulnerable to increased concentrations of nutrients, and this issue may be exacerbated by climate change. Knowledge of the effects of temperature and rainfall on SW quality is required to take the necessary measures to achieve good SW status in the future. To address this, the aims of this study were threefold: (1) to assess how a changing climate may alter the nitrate, ammonium, phosphorus and biological oxygen demand status (BOD 5 ) of SW; (2) assess the relationship between water quality and flow; and (3) simulate diffuse and point source pollution reduction scenarios in the Júcar River Basin District in the Mediterranean region. A regionalised long-term climate scenario was used following one Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP8.5) with the data incorporated into the coupling of hydrological and water quality models. According to these climate change scenarios, SW with poor nitrate, ammonium, phosphorus and BOD 5 status are expected to increase in the future by factors of 1.3, 1.9, 4 and 4, respectively. Furthermore, median ammonium and phosphorus concentration may be doubled in months with low flows. Methane emissions from oil and gas production provide an important contribution to global warming. We investigate 2020 emissions from the largest gas field in Algeria, Hassi R'Mel, and the oil-production-dominated area Hassi Messaoud. We use methane data from the high-resolution (20 m) Sentinel-2 instruments to identify and estimate emission time series for 11 superemitters (including 10 unlit flares). We integrate this information in a transport model inversion that uses methane data from the coarser (7 km × 5.5 km) but higher-precision TROPOMI instrument to estimate emissions from both the 11 superemitters (>1 t/h individually) and the remaining diffuse area source (not detected as point sources with Sentinel-2). Compared to a bottom-up inventory for 2019 that is aligned with UNFCCC-reported emissions, we find that 2020 emissions in Hassi R'Mel (0.16 [0.11-0.22] Tg/yr) are lower by 53 [24-73]%, and emissions in Hassi Messaoud (0.22 [0.13-0.28] Tg/yr) are higher by 79 [4-188]%. Our analysis indicates that a larger fraction of Algeria's methane emissions (∼75%) come from oil production than national reporting suggests (5%). Although in both regions the diffuse area source constitutes the majority of emissions, relatively few satellite-detected superemitters provide a significant contribution (24 [12-40]% in Hassi R'Mel; 49 [27-71]% in Hassi Messaoud), indicating that mitigation efforts should address both. Our synergistic use of Sentinel-2 and TROPOMI can produce a unique and detailed emission characterization of oil and gas production areas.

Highly regulated basins have traditionally required management practices to mitigate the negative environmental impacts and ensure human well-being. This paper proposes and assesses environmental and water supply deficit indicators to assist in the management of environmental flows (e-flows). For that, a water allocation model is applied, and hydrological alteration, habitat alteration and water supply indicators are quantified, normalized and integrated into a general basin management indicator. This basin management indicator is analyzed for four management approaches and seven e-flow scenarios in the Júcar River Basin (eastern Spain). Hydrological alteration indicators show a less pronounced alteration in the river sections located upstream of the basin while a higher alteration in the downstream sections. As for the habitat indicators, they experience an improvement compared to the natural regime. Based on the values of the basin management indicator, the best e-flow scenario to adopt in the Júcar River Basin is selected. Use of nitrogen and phosphorus in agriculture increases agricultural production but also generates important environmental problems around the world, such as high nitrate levels in aquifers and an increase in eutrophication of waters. A set of tools and models are used, ENVIRO-GRO and PATRICAL models, to analyse the effect of large irrigation system modernization, 13,700 ha, from traditional flood irrigation to modernized drip irrigation, in the aquifer nitrate levels and in the phosphorus inputs to a 50-years eutrophicated RAMSAR lake, Albufera lake. Based on data collected from end users, modernized irrigation system reduces the amount of nitrogen applied from 25 % to 45 % and phosphorus applied around 90-95 %, so phosphorus content on soil, phosphorus legacy, is reducing by time. Obtained results indicate that nitrogen leaching as nitrate is reduced by 70 % to 83 % and surface runoff during irrigation events disappear, hence phosphorus contributions to surface waters are eliminated. Nitrate polluted aquifer will be recovered in 5-6 years after complete implement of measures and phosphorus inputs to the lake are reduced around 20 % contributing to improve the status of the eutrophicated Albufera lake. In response to growing global interest in organic agriculture, this study delves into the microbial landscape of organically grown raw produce with a focus on food safety. Vegetables that are consumed raw are potential vehicles for the transmission of any type of microorganism capable of causing human disease. Free-living amoebae (FLA) are ubiquitous protozoa found in many ecosystems and can serve as hosts to pathogenic bacteria. So far, data regarding the FLA bacterial microbiome in fresh produce remain scarce and are non-existent for those of organic origin. Thus, the aim of this preliminary work is to characterize the microbiome of FLA in commonly consumed raw vegetables to know their possible implications for consumers. A total of 40 organic cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and strawberry samples were analyzed. FLA were found in all samples, and their bacterial microbiome was obtained via amplicon sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq platform and pair-end protocol. Acanthamoeba spp. and Vermamoeba vermiformis were identified via qPCR in 65.0% and 25.0% of the samples, respectively. Regarding the bacterial microbiome of FLA, the most abundant genera were Pseudomonas (1.8-17.8%) and Flavobacterium (1.7-12.6%). Bacteria not previously related to FLA, such as Prosthecobacter or Cellvibrio , are described in this work. Importantly, several bacterial genera found within the FLA microbiome were identified as potential human pathogens, including Pseudomonas , Flavobacterium , Arcobacter , Klebsiella , Mycobacterium , Salmonella and Legionella . This is the first work in which FLA microbiome isolated from organic products has been characterized, underscoring the significance of understanding FLA's role as carriers of pathogenic bacteria in the context of organic food safety.

Although wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a fundamental role in protecting the aquatic environment as they prevent organic matter, nutrients and other pollutants from reaching the natural ecosystems, near residential areas they can generate unpleasant smells and noise. The plant studied in the present work is in a seaside tourist area in the Valencian Community, Spain. The main aim was to detect any possible perceptible H 2 S concentrations from the WWTP by experimental measurement campaigns (including sensor readings and olfactometry measurements by two experts) plus mathematical modelling. After a thorough data analysis of the essential variables involved, such as wind speed, wind direction and H 2 S concentrations (the main odorant) and comparing their temporal patterns, it was found that the probability of affecting the residential area was highest from June to August before noon and in the late evening. The hourly H 2 S concentration, influent flow rate and temperature showed a positive correlation, the strongest (R 2 = 0.89) being the relationship between the H 2 S concentration and influent flow rate. These two variables followed a similar daily pattern and indicated that H 2 S was emitted when influent wastewater was being pumped into the biological reactor. The H 2 S median concentration at the source of the emission was below 1393.865 μg/m 3 (1 ppm), although concentrations 10 times higher were occasionally recorded. The observed H 2 S peak-to-mean ratio (1 min to 1 h of integration times) ranged from 1.15 to 16.03. This ratio and its attenuation with distance from the source depended on the atmospheric stability. Both H 2 S concentrations and variability were considerably reduced after submerging the inlet. A mechanistic model describing the key interactions occurring in microalgae-bacteria consortia systems was developed and validated. The proposed model includes the most relevant features of microalgae, such as light dependence, endogenous respiration, growth, and nutrient consumption for different nutrient sources. The model is coupled to the plant-wide model BNRM2, including heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria, and chemical precipitation processes, among others. A major novelty of the model is microalgae growth inhibition by nitrite. Validation was conducted using experimental data from a pilot-scale membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) fed with permeate from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Three experimental periods dealing with different interactions between nitrifying bacteria and microalgae were validated. The model was able to accurately represent the dynamics occurring in the MPBR, predicting the relative abundance of microalgae and bacteria over time. Specifically, >500 pairs of experimental and modeled data were evaluated, giving an average R 2 coefficient of 0.9902. The validated model was also used to evaluate different offline control strategies for enhancing process performance. For example, partial-nitrification resulting in NO 2 -N accumulation (i.e., microalgae growth inhibition) could be avoided by increasing biomass retention time from 2.0 to 4.5 days. In this study, the presence of Acanthamoeba spp., Blastocystis sp., Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia sp., Toxoplasma gondii and Vermamoeba vermiformis was assessed in organic leafy green vegetables (lettuce, spinach, cabbage) and fruits (strawberry), which are usually consumed raw. A total of 110 organic samples were collected in Valencia (Spain). Protozoa were concentrated before detection by immunofluorescence ( Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp.) or real-time qPCR ( Acanthamoeba spp., Blastocystis sp., C. cayetanensis , E. histolytica , T. gondii and V. vermiformis ). The most abundant protozoa in organic vegetables and berry fruits were Acanthamoeba (65.5%), followed by T. gondii (37.2%), V. vermiformis (17.3%), C. cayetanensis (12.7%), Cryptosporidium spp. (6.8%), Blastocystis sp. (1.8%) and Giardia sp. (1.7%). E. histolytica was not found in any of the organic samples. Thus, results showed that consumers can be exposed to protozoan parasites by consuming organic vegetables and berry fruits. This is the first report in Spain describing the presence of the protozoan pathogens Acanthamoeba spp., Blastocystis sp., C. cayetanensis , T. gondii and V. vermiformis , Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp. in organic fresh produce. Photosynthesis and evapotranspiration in Amazonian forests are major contributors to the global carbon and water cycles. However, their diurnal patterns and responses to atmospheric warming and drying at regional scale remain unclear, hindering the understanding of global carbon and water cycles. Here, we used proxies of photosynthesis and evapotranspiration from the International Space Station to reveal a strong depression of dry season afternoon photosynthesis (by 6.7 ± 2.4%) and evapotranspiration (by 6.1 ± 3.1%). Photosynthesis positively responds to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in the morning, but negatively in the afternoon. Furthermore, we projected that the regionally depressed afternoon photosynthesis will be compensated by their increases in the morning in future dry seasons. These results shed new light on the complex interplay of climate with carbon and water fluxes in Amazonian forests and provide evidence on the emerging environmental constraints of primary productivity that may improve the robustness of future projections.

Ocean color is the result of absorption and scattering, as light interacts with the water and the optically active constituents. The measurement of ocean color changes enables monitoring of these constituents (dissolved or particulate materials). The main objective of this research is to use digital images to estimate the light attenuation coefficient (Kd), the Secchi disk depth (ZSD), and the chlorophyll a (Chla) concentration and to optically classify plots of seawater using the criteria proposed by Jerlov and Forel using digital images captured at the ocean surface. The database used in this study was obtained from seven oceanographic cruises performed in oceanic and coastal areas. Three approaches were developed for each parameter: a general approach that can be applied under any optical condition, one for oceanic conditions, and another for coastal conditions. The results of the coastal approach showed higher correlations between the modeled and validation data, with rp values of 0.80 for Kd, 0.90 for ZSD, 0.85 for C h l a , 0.73 for Jerlov, and 0.95 for Forel-Ule. The oceanic approach failed to detect significant changes in a digital photograph. The most precise results were obtained when images were captured at 45° (n = 22; Fr cal=11.02>Fr crit=5.99). Therefore, to ensure precise results, the angle of photography is key. The development of methodologies to support decision-making in municipal solid waste (MSW) management processes is of great interest for municipal administrations. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques provide multiple tools for designing algorithms to objectively analyze data while creating highly precise models. Support vector machines and neuronal networks are formed by AI applications offering optimization solutions at different managing stages. In this paper, an implementation and comparison of the results obtained by two AI methods on a solid waste management problem is shown. Support vector machine (SVM) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network techniques have been used. The implementation of LSTM took into account different configurations, temporal filtering and annual calculations of solid waste collection periods. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of applying a commercial porous membrane to direct filtration of municipal wastewater. The effects of membrane pore size (MF and UF), treated influent (raw wastewater and the primary settler effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant) and operating solids concentration (about 1 and 2.6 g L -1 ) were evaluated on a demonstration plant. Filtration periods of 2-8 h were achieved when using the MF membrane, while these increased to 34-69 days with the UF membrane. This wide difference was due to severe fouling when operating the MF membrane, which was dramatically reduced by the UF membrane. Use of raw wastewater and higher solids concentration showed a significant benefit in the filtration performance when using the UF module. The physical fouling control strategies tested (air sparging and backwashing) proved to be ineffective in controlling UF membrane fouling, although these strategies had a significant impact on MF membrane fouling, extending the operating period from some hours to 5-6 days. The fouling evaluation showed that a cake layer seemed to be the predominant reversible fouling mechanism during each independent filtration cycle. However, as continuous filtration advanced, a large accumulation of irreversible fouling appeared, which could have been related to intermediate/complete pore blocking in the case of the MF membrane, while it could have been produced by standard pore blocking in the case of the UF membrane. Organic matter represented more than 70% of this irreversible fouling in all the experimental conditions evaluated.

Predicting pesticides' behavior in the environment is necessary to anticipate and minimize their adverse effects. Despite the use of pesticides in Spain is increasing, the implementation and use of predictive mathematical models is seldomly done in practice due to the lack of available data. In this original work, the Pesticide Root Zone Model version 5 (PRZM 5) mathematical model under the Pesticide in Water Concentration 1.52 (PWC) interface has been applied to model pesticide behavior in nine groundwater bodies located inside the Júcar River Basin (JRB) in Spain. Mathematical modeling allowed calculating the maximum concentration of pesticides after completing the calibration process. Bromacil, terbuthylazine, atrazine, desethyl-terbuthylazine, and terbumeton concentrations in groundwater were simulated between 2006 and 2019. Results show that the maximum pesticide concentration value on every well exceeds the current Spanish Maximum Concentration Limit (0.1 μg/L). PRZM 5 was able to reproduce pesticide concentration observations over time despite the limited amount of available data. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of using dynamic membranes for direct filtration of municipal wastewater. The influence of different alternative supporting materials (one or two layers of flat open monofilament woven polyamide meshes with 1 or 5 µm of pore size) was studied. A stable short-term self-forming DM was achieved (from some hours to 3 days) regardless of the supporting material used, producing relatively similar permeate qualities (total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorous and turbidity of 67-88 mg L -1 , 155-186 mg L -1 , 48.7-50.4 mg L -1 , 4.7-4.9 mg L -1 , and 167-174 NTU, respectively). A DM permeability loss rate of from 5.21 to 10.03 LMH bar -1 day -1 was obtained, which depended on the supporting material used. Unfortunately, the preliminary energy, carbon footprint, and economic evaluations performed showed that although DMs obtain higher pollutant captures than conventional treatments (primary settler), the benefits are not enough to justify their use for treating average municipal wastewater. The management of environmental flows is of paramount importance in regulated water resources systems to preserve river ecosystems. This work proposes a methodology to assess habitat alteration in river basins altered by management activities. The methodology is based on the joint application of a basin management model (SIMGES, AQUATOOL) and a model to estimate habitat time series (CAUDECO). CAUDECO is based on the weighted useable areas of the species in their different vital stages that, in turn, depend on the flows in each river stretch and the biological periods of the species. The final output is an indicator of habitat alteration, which is defined ad hoc for this work to relate the habitat suitability under regulated and natural regimes. The methodology was applied to a case study in north-western Spain: the Órbigo River basin. The results in the current management scenario highlight that the ecological flows improve the habitat suitability of several species with respect to natural regime conditions. For instance, the mean values of the habitat time series in the Órbigo River for the brown trout and bermejuela under regulated conditions are 69.6% and 88%; whereas in natural regime they are equal to 55.1% and 72.9%, respectively. Based on these results, eight additional scenarios of ecological flows were tested and their effects on both habitat alteration and water demand reliability were quantified and discussed. It was found that increases in the ecological flows up to 30% do not affect the reliability of water demands and reduce habitat alteration (i.e., lead to values of the habitat alteration indicator closer to 1) for all species present in the river basin. These results highlight that the methodology and indicator of habitat alteration proposed in this paper are useful to support the management of regulated river basins, since they allow assessing the implications of ecological flows on both habitat suitability and reliability of water demands., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Risk-informed decision making permits a more effective water safety management. In this framework, this article introduces the rationale and proposes a new approach to carry out a quantitative risk assessment along the water chain, from river source to tap water, by integrating predictive modelling combined with event-tree and fault-tree techniques. The model developed by this approach could not only account for normal but also for abnormal process conditions in the water treatment plant, as well as assess the real impact of the applied safety controls, such as turbidity control. A sensitivity study was conducted to determine the effect of considering a typical drinking water treatment plant (DWTP), i.e. coagulation, sedimentation and filtration with two turbidity controls (on intake and after filtration) on the risk of infection due to exposure to Cryptosporidium in tap water. The results showed that, with the current effectiveness of turbidity reduction in the DWTP, the first control did not minimise the annual risk of Cryptosporidium infection (3.6E-04) and only limiting turbidity after filtration to below 0.01NTU provided a clear reduction in risk (7.7E-05) at the cost of rejecting 60 % of the water after the control. The lowest risk was found when turbidity reduction was set at 4 logs (8.48E-06), although this means that the effectiveness of turbidity reduction should be greatly improved. Waterborne parasitic protozoa (WPP) infections have a worldwide distribution and are a source for epidemic and endemic human diseases. Although a variety of protozoa are commonly detected in wastewater and cited as causative agents of outbreaks, effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) used for irrigation can contain other pathogenic protozoa that are not currently being controlled. The lack of control on a routine basis using rapid and sensitive methods to detect these parasites in water may keep them under-recognized. This study focused on using molecular tools, 18 S rRNA amplicon-based sequencing and qPCR, to characterize WPP distribution in wastewater samples from urban WWTPs used for irrigation. A total of eight wastewater samples (from secondary and tertiary disinfection treatment effluents) were collected. Potentially pathogenic protozoa identified by 18 S rRNA sequencing and/or qPCR in the analyzed samples included Acanthamoeba spp., Blastocystis sp., Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba dispar, Entamoeba hartmanni, Giardia intestinalis assemblage A and Toxoplasma gondii Positive results by qPCR were in non-quantifiable levels. Blastocystis sp. was the most represented protozoa among the sequences retrieved from the amplicon sequencing. Blastocystis ST1 and ST2 were the most abundant subtypes among the obtained OTUs. Moreover, Blastocystis sp. ST3, ST4, ST6 and ST8 were also detected, although in lower abundances. The sustainability of agriculture in the Mediterranean climate is challenged by high irrigation water demands and nitrogen fertilizer losses to the environment, causing significant pressure on groundwater resources and groundwater-dependent ecosystems. Advanced irrigation technologies and improved fertilizer management have been promoted as key solutions to reduce the agricultural impact on aquatic systems. However, it remains unclear how different irrigation-fertilizer practices perform on the long-term under a highly variable climate, such as the Mediterranean one. Here, we conduct hydrological simulations over a fifty-year period to quantify the magnitude and dynamics of groundwater recharge and nitrogen leaching under five real-case irrigation-fertilizer practices observed in Valencia (eastern Spain). The Valencian Region is the largest citrus-producing region of Europe and current irrigation-fertilizer practices reflect the ongoing transformation of irrigation systems from flood to drip irrigation. Our simulations highlight three major implications of the irrigation transformation for groundwater resources. First, the transformation from flood to drip irrigation reduces the recharge fraction (19% vs. 16%) and especially the nitrogen leaching fraction (33% vs. 18%) on the long term. Second, the long-term performance of the two irrigation practices is subject to substantial inter-annual differences controlled by precipitation variability. The sensitivity of recharge and nitrogen leaching to annual meteorological conditions is stronger in drip irrigation, which eventually leads to a similar performance of flood and drip irrigation in wet years if fertilizer inputs are similar. Third, we identify a pronounced year-to-year nitrogen memory in the soil, whereby an enhanced (decreased) nitrogen leaching is observed after anomalously dry (wet) years, affecting the performance of irrigation-fertilizer practices. Dredging is an essential technique to maintain proper water depths in ports and bays. Many dredged sediments are considered as toxic waste due to their significant amounts of metals and other pollutants. In consequence, they need to be treated to reduce this toxicity and avoid pollutant resuspensions. Physical operations and chemical, thermal and biological processes have been conventionally used to this aim, but the traditional linear sediment approach is often unsustainable and economically and environmentally demanding. Considering the increasing people's awareness in environmental issues, more efficient dredged sediment management schemes are required. Some authors are making significant efforts to improve circularity in sediment management processes by taking advantage of the mineral composition of sediments to obtain products for the building and road construction sectors, therefore decreasing the need of raw materials while reducing the amounts of sediments wasted to landfills. However, information related to the characteristics of these products, their mechanical behaviour and their functionality is still scarce, being sediment-based by-products developed mainly at low Technological Readiness Level (TRL), showing low global impact in the market. To implement circular economy in the dredged sediment sector, some technical and socio-political barriers must be still overcome. To this aim, further research and technological applications must be developed, with the support of decision makers and stakeholders. A semi-industrial scale AnMBR plant was operated for more than 600 days to evaluate the long-term operation of this technology at ambient temperature (ranging from 10 to 27 ○ C), variable hydraulic retention times (HRT) (from 25 to 41 h) and influent loads (mostly between 15 and 45 kg COD·d -1 ). The plant was fed with sulfate-rich high-loaded municipal wastewater from the pre-treatment of a full-scale WWTP. The results showed promising AnMBR performance as the core technology for wastewater treatment, obtaining an average 87.2 ± 6.1 % COD removal during long-term operation, with 40 % of the data over 90%. Five periods were considered to evaluate the effect of HRT, influent characteristics, COD/SO 4 2- -S ratio and temperature on the biological process. In the selected periods, methane yields varied from 70.2±36.0 to 169.0±95.1 STP L CH 4 ·kg -1 COD inf , depending on the influent sulfate concentration, and wasting sludge production was reduced by between 8 % and 42 % compared to conventional activated sludge systems. The effluent exhibited a significant nutrient recovery potential. Rice is a staple food in Senegal, which however imports more than 70% of the rice consumed annually to meet its domestic demand. Despite governmental efforts to increase rice self-sufficiency, both rice supply and yields remain low. Senegalese farmers face challenges related to irrigation infrastructure and fertiliser access, besides those derived from climate change. This study applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) combined with financial Life Cycle Costing (LCC) to evaluate alternative scenarios for rice management in the Senegal River Valley and identify sustainability hotspots and potential improvements. Specifically, rice cultivation in Ross Béthio (Saint Louis, Senegal) is assessed based on the observed agricultural practices during the dry seasons of 2016 and 2017. Two scenarios capturing conventional (CONV) and intensive (INT) practices are compared to two reference scenarios (SAED scenarios) according to the recommendations of the official agricultural advisory service. The INT scenario generates the lowest impacts per kg of paddy rice in seven out of thirteen impact categories, including climate change, freshwater and marine eutrophication, ozone depletion and water scarcity. This is due to the higher yields (7.4 t ha -1 ) relative to CONV (4.8 t ha -1 ) and the two reference SAED scenarios (6.0 t ha -1 ). The two latter scenarios show the lowest values in the remaining categories, although they also generate slightly lower profits than INT (138 € t -1 vs. 149 € t -1 ) due to increased labour costs for additional fertilisation treatments. The results from both LCA and LCC underline the importance of increasing yields to decrease environmental impacts and production costs of rice when estimated per kg of product. Well-designed fertiliser application doses and timing and increased mechanisation can deliver further environmental benefits. Additional improvements (e.g. in irrigation, crop rotations, straw management) could be considered to promote the long-term sustainability and profitability of rice production in Senegal. LCA in combination with financial LCC is identified as a decision-support tool for evaluating the sustainability of alternative crop management practices. This paper presents a methodology to assess the effects of management strategies of environmental flows on the hydrological alteration of river basins on a daily scale. It comprises the collection and analysis of data, the implementation and calibration of a water allocation model; the computation of the natural flow regime; and the estimation, normalization, and aggregation of hydrological alteration indicators to obtain a global indicator of the hydrological alteration. The methodology was applied to a case study in the Iberian Peninsula: The Orbigo River basin, which belongs to the Duero River basin district. For that, three management scenarios were defined: the current scenario, a scenario without any environmental flow and the scenario with the environmental flows initially projected for the period 2022-2027. These scenarios were modelled with the SIMGES water allocation model, which is calibrated in the study site, and the hydrological alterations in four river stretches with different locations and characteristics were assessed. The implications of each environmental flow scenario on the demand reliabilities were also analysed. The global indicator of hydrological alteration obtained in the projected scenario was greater (better) than those of the other two scenarios, but the reliabilities of the water demands were worse. This article introduces M-GRCT, a circular economy decision support model for the design of recyclable waste management systems in low-income municipalities. The model allows for performing calculations on a set of two scenarios integrating a sociocultural dynamics assessment, this being a characteristic feature of this type of municipalities. The model also integrates the analysis of the remaining variables usually addressed in solid waste management schemes while considering topics such as reduction of the carbon footprint due to activities such as the transport of recyclable waste, the generation of leachates, the generation of greenhouse gases and the promotion of an increase in the number of associated recyclers and selective routes. The economic evaluation of the different implementation scenarios is supported by a dynamic tool called DATA4 (a macro-type array accompanied by two control panels programmed in Visual Basic and dashboards by Power BI). M-GRCT constitutes a tool for the promotion of good environmental practices and the identification of strategies for the promotion of local development mechanisms. Results provided by the model contrast with those obtained by traditional linear economy approaches. An illustrative example of the application of the M-GRCT model is shown. The model was used to simulate the municipal solid waste managing system of the municipality of Guateque (Colombia). The results show the importance of integrating both economic and environmental costs to optimally allocate governmental and private resources when the recycling rate is expected to increase in the next 10 years.

Total nitrite (TNO 2  = HNO 2  + NO - 2 ) accumulation due to the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was monitored in microalgae-bacteria consortia, and the inhibitory effect of nitrite/free nitrous acid (NO 2 -N/FNA) on microalgae photosynthesis and inhibition mechanism was studied. A culture of Scenedesmus was used to run two sets of batch reactors at different pH and TNO 2 concentrations to evaluate the toxic potential of NO 2 -N and FNA. Photo-respirometric tests showed that NO 2 -N accumulation has a negative impact on net oxygen production rate (OPR NET ). Chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis was used to examine the biochemical effects of NO 2 -N stress and the mechanism of NO 2 -N inhibition. The electron transport rate (ETR), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and JIP-test revealed that the electron transport chain between Photosystems II and I (PS II and PS I) was hindered at NO 2 -N concentrations above 25 g N m -3 . Electron acceptor Q A was not able to reoxidize and could not transfer electrons to the next electron acceptor, Q B , accumulating P 680 + (excited PS II reaction center) and limiting oxygen production. A semi-continuous reactor containing a Scenedesmus culture was monitored by photo-respirometry tests and Chlorophyll a fluorescence to calibrate NO 2 -N inhibition (5-35 g N m -3 ). Non-competitive inhibition and Hill-type models were compared to select the best-fitting inhibition equations. Reduction of fossil fuel-related methane emissions has been identified as an essential means for climate change mitigation, but emission source identification remains elusive for most oil and gas production basins in the world. We combine three complementary satellite data sets to survey single methane emission sources on the west coast of Turkmenistan, one of the largest methane hotspots in the world. We found 29 different emitters, with emission rates >1800 kg/h, active in the 2017-2020 time period, although older satellite data show that this type of emission has been occurring for decades. We find that all sources are linked to extraction fields mainly dedicated to crude oil production, where 24 of them are inactive flares venting gas. The analysis of time series suggests a causal relationship between the decrease in flaring and the increase in venting. At the regional level, 2020 shows a substantial increase in the number of methane plume detections concerning previous years. Our results suggest that these large venting point sources represent a key mitigation opportunity as they emanate from human-controlled facilities, and that new satellite methods promise a revolution in the detection and monitoring of methane point emissions worldwide.

This paper studied the feasibility of using dynamic membranes (DMs) to treat municipal wastewater (MWW). Effluent from the primary settler of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant was treated using a flat 1 µm pore size open monofilament polyamide woven mesh as supporting material. Two supporting material layers were required to self-form a DM in the short-term (17 days of operation). Different strategies (increasing the filtration flux, increasing the concentration of operating solids and coagulant dosing) were used to enhance the required forming time and pollutant capture efficiency. Higher permeate flux and increased solids were shown to be ineffective while coagulant dosing showed improvements in both the required DM forming time and permeate quality. When coagulant was dosed (10 mg L -1 ) a DM forming time of 7 days and a permeate quality of total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorous and turbidity of 24 mg L -1 , 58 mg L -1 , 38.1 mg L -1 , 1.2 mg L -1 and 22 NTU, respectively, was achieved. Preliminary energy and economic balances determined that energy recoveries from 0.032 to 0.121 kWh per m 3 of treated water at a cost between €0.002 to €0.003 per m 3 of treated water can be obtained from the particulate material recovered in the DM.

The results of a global sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of a microalgae model applied to a Membrane Photobioreactor (MPBR) pilot plant were assessed. The main goals of this study were: (I) to identify the sensitivity factors of the model through the Morris screening method, i.e. the most influential factors; (II) to calibrate the influential factors online or offline; and (III) to assess the model's uncertainty. Four experimental periods were evaluated, which encompassed a wide range of environmental and operational conditions. Eleven influential factors (e.g. maximum specific growth rate, light intensity and maximum temperature) were identified in the model from a set of 34 kinetic parameters (input factors). These influential factors were preferably calibrated offline and alternatively online. Offline/online calibration provided a unique set of model factor values that were used to match the model results with experimental data for the four experimental periods. A dynamic optimization of these influential factors was conducted, resulting in an enhanced set of values for each period. Model uncertainty was assessed using the uncertainty bands and three uncertainty indices: p-factor, r-factor and ARIL. Uncertainty was dependent on both the number of influential factors identified in each period and the model output analyzed (i.e. biomass, ammonium and phosphate concentration). The effectiveness of drinking water treatment is critical to achieve an optimal and safe drinking water. Disinfection is one of the most important steps to eliminate the health concern caused by the microbial population in this type of water. However, no study has evaluated the changes in its microbiome, specially the eukaryotic microbiome, and the fates of opportunistic pathogens generated by UV disinfection with medium-pressure mercury lamps in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). In this work, the eukaryotic community composition of a DWTP with UV disinfection was evaluated before and after a UV disinfection treatment by means of Illumina 18S rRNA amplicon-based sequencing. Among the physicochemical parameters analysed, flow and nitrate appeared to be related with the changes in the eukaryotic microbiome shape. Public health concern eukaryotic organisms such as Blastocystis, Entamoeba, Acanthamoeba, Hartmannella, Naegleria, Microsporidium or Caenorhabditis were identified. Additionally, the relation between the occurrence of some human bacterial pathogens and the presence of some eukaryotic organisms has been studied.
