In recent years, much attention has been devoted to understanding the pathways of phase transition between two equilibrium condensed phases (such as liquids and solids). However, the microscopic pathways of transition involving non-equilibrium, non-diffusive amorphous (glassy) phases still remain poorly understood. In this work, we have employed computer simulations, persistence homology (a tool rooted in topological data analysis), and machine learning to probe the microscopic pathway of pressure-induced non-equilibrium transition between the low- and high-density amorphous (LDA and HDA, respectively) ice phases of the TIP4P/2005 and ST2 water models. Using persistence homology and machine learning, we introduced a new order parameter that unambiguously identifies the LDA- and HDA-like local environments. The LDA phase transitions continuously and collectively into the corresponding HDA phase via a pre-ordered intermediate phase during the isothermal compression. The local order parameter susceptibilities show a maximum near the transition pressure (P*)—suggesting maximum structural heterogeneities near P*. The HDA-like clusters are structurally ramified and spatially delocalized inside the LDA phase near the transition pressure. We also found manifestations of the first-order low-density to high-density liquid transition in the sharpness of the order parameter change during the LDA to HDA transition. We further investigated the (geometrical) structures and topologies of the LDA and HDA ices formed via different protocols and also studied the dependence of the (microscopic) pathway of phase transition on the protocol followed to prepare the initial LDA phase. Finally, the method adopted here to study the phase transition pathways is not restricted to the system under consideration and provides a robust way of probing phase transition pathways involving any two condensed phases at both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium conditions. Water can be vitrified if it is cooled at high rates, which makes it possible to outrun crystallization in so-called no man's land, a range of deeply supercooled temperatures where water crystallizes rapidly. Here, we study the reverse process in pure water samples by flash melting amorphous ice with microsecond laser pulses. Time-resolved electron diffraction reveals that the sample transiently crystallizes despite a heating rate of more than 5 × 106 K/s, even though under the same conditions, vitrification can be achieved with a similar cooling rate of 107 K/s. Moreover, we observe different crystallization kinetics for amorphous solid water and hyperquenched glassy water. These experiments open up new avenues for elucidating the crystallization mechanism of water and studying its dynamics in no man's land. They also add important insights into the laser melting and revitrification processes that are integral to the emerging field of microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy. In extreme and nanoconfinement conditions, the tetrahedral arrangement of water molecules is challenged, resulting in a rich and new phase behavior unseen in bulk phases. The unique phase behavior of water confined in hydrophobic nanoslits has been previously observed, such as the formation of a variety of two-dimensional (2D) ices below the freezing temperature. The primary identified 2D ice phase, termed square tube ice (STI), represents a unique arrangement of water molecules in 2D ice, which can be viewed as an array of 1D ice nanotubes stacked in the direction parallel to the confinement plane. In this study, we report the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations evidence of a novel 2D ice phase, namely, helical square tube ice (H-STI). H-STI is characterized by the stacking of helical ice nanotubes in the direction parallel to the confinement plane. Its structural specificity is evident in the presence of helical square ice nanotubes, a configuration unseen in both STI and single-walled ice nanotubes. A detailed analysis of the hydrogen bonding strength showed that H-STI is a 2D ice phase diverging from the Bernal–Fowler–Pauling ice rules by forming only two strong hydrogen bonds between adjacent molecules along its helical ice chain. This arrangement of strong hydrogen bonds along ice nanotube and weak bonds between the ice nanotube shows a similarity to quasi-one-dimensional van der Waals materials. Application of the coherent thermodynamic model [W. Holzapfel and S. Klotz, J. Chem. Phys. 155, 024506 (2021)] for H2O ice Ih to the more detailed data for D2O ice Ih provides better insight into the contributions from quenched proton disorder and offers a new basis for understanding the apparent differences between the data for thermal expansion measured with neutron diffraction on polycrystalline samples [A. Fortes, Acta Crystallogr., Sect. B: Struct. Sci., Cryst. Eng. Mater. 74, 196 (2018) and A. Fortes, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys 21, 8264 (2019)] and macroscopic dilatation measurements on single crystals [D. Buckingham et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 185505 (2018)]. The comparison points to contributions from defects effecting the two techniques in different ways. Heterogeneous nucleation is the main path to ice formation on Earth. The ice nucleating ability of a certain substrate is mainly determined by both molecular interactions and the structural mismatch between the ice and the substrate lattices. We focus on the latter factor using molecular simulations of the mW model. Quantifying the effect of structural mismatch alone is challenging due to its coupling with molecular interactions. To disentangle both the factors, we use a substrate composed of water molecules in such a way that any variation on the nucleation temperature can be exclusively ascribed to the structural mismatch. We find that a 1% increase in structural mismatch leads to a decrease of ∼4 K in the nucleation temperature. We also analyze the effect of orientation of the substrate with respect to the liquid. The three main ice orientations (basal, primary prism, and secondary prism) have a similar ice nucleating ability. We finally assess the effect of lattice flexibility by comparing substrates where molecules are immobile to others where a certain freedom to fluctuate around the lattice positions is allowed. Heterogeneous ice nucleation (HIN) has applications in climate science, nanotechnology, and cryopreservation. Ice nucleation on the earth's surface or in the atmosphere usually occurs heterogeneously involving foreign substrates, known as ice nucleating particles (INPs). Experiments identify good INPs but lack sufficient microscopic resolution to answer the basic question: What makes a good INP? We employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in combination with machine learning (ML) to address this question. Often, the large amount of computational cost required to cross the nucleation barrier and observe HIN in MD simulations is a practical limitation. We use information obtained from short MD simulations of atomistic surface and water models to predict the likelihood of HIN. We consider 153 atomistic substrates with some surfaces differing in elemental composition and others only in terms of lattice parameters, surface morphology, or surface charges. A range of water features near the surface (local) are extracted from short MD simulations over a time interval (≤ 300 ns) where ice nucleation has not initiated. Three ML classification models, Random Forest (RF), support vector machine, and Gaussian process classification are considered, and the accuracies achieved by all three approaches lie within their statistical uncertainties. Including local water features is essential for accurate prediction. The accuracy of our best RF classification model obtained including both surface and local water features is 0.89 ± 0.05. A similar accuracy can be achieved including only local water features, suggesting that the important surface properties are largely captured by the local water features. Some important features identified by ML analysis are local icelike structures, water density and polarization profiles perpendicular to the surface, and the two-dimensional lattice match to ice. We expect that this work, with its strong focus on realistic surface models, will serve as a guide to the identification or design of substrates that can promote or discourage ice nucleation. Ice is different from ordinary crystals because it contains randomness, which means that statistical treatment based on ensemble averaging is essential. Ice structures are constrained by topological rules known as the ice rules, which give them unique anomalous properties. These properties become more apparent when the system size is large. For this reason, there is a need to produce a large number of sufficiently large crystals that are homogeneously random and satisfy the ice rules. We have developed an algorithm to quickly generate ice structures containing ions and defects. This algorithm is provided as an independent software module that can be incorporated into crystal structure generation software. Amorphous ice phases are key constituents of water's complex structural landscape. This study investigates the polyamorphic nature of water, focusing on the complexities within low-density amorphous ice (LDA), high-density amorphous ice, and the recently discovered medium-density amorphous ice (MDA). We use rotationally invariant, high-dimensional order parameters to capture a wide spectrum of local symmetries for the characterization of local oxygen environments. We train a neural network to classify these local environments and investigate the distinctiveness of MDA within the structural landscape of amorphous ice. Our results highlight the difficulty in accurately differentiating MDA from LDA due to structural similarities. Forward stimulated Raman scattering and backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) are measured when an intense 532 nm nanosecond pulsed laser is focused into water and heavy water. The investigation reveals a significant observation: the formation of the ice VII structure exclusively occurs in the backward direction when optical breakdown takes place, provided that the input energy falls below 90 mJ for liquid water or 75 mJ for heavy water. This phase transition is attributed to secondary shock compression, which comes from energy transfer and compression between the BSRS in plasmas with the pump laser. The optical breakdown experiment under pre-pressure reveals that the shock compression in the back direction is approximately 2.3 times that of the forward direction. The H2O and H2O2 molecules resemble each other in a multitude of ways as has been noted in the literature. Here, we present density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the H2O2(s) and H2O2·2H2O(s) crystals and make selected comparisons with ice polymorphs. The performance of a number of dispersion-corrected density functionals—both self-consistent and a posteriori ones—are assessed, and we give special attention to the D3 correction and its effects. The D3 correction to the lattice energies is large: for H2O2(s) the D3 correction constitutes about 25% of the lattice energy using PBE, much more for RPBE, much less for SCAN, and it primarily arises from non-H-bonded interactions out to about 5 Å.The large D3 corrections to the lattice energies are likely a consequence of several effects: correction for missing dispersion interaction, the ability of D3 to capture and correct various other kinds of limitations built into the underlying DFT functionals, and finally some degree of cell-contraction-induced polarization enhancement. We find that the overall best-performing functionals of the twelve examined are optPBEvdW and RPBE-D3. Freezing of water under nanoconfinement exhibits physical peculiarities with respect to the bulk water. However, experimental observations are extremely challenging at this scale, which limits our understanding of the effect of confinement on water properties upon freezing. In this study, we use molecular dynamic simulations to investigate how confinement affects the kinetics of growth of ice and the thermodynamic equilibrium of ice-liquid coexistence. TIP4P/Ice water model and CSH-FF model were applied to simulate ice crystallization in a confined cement system at temperatures down to 220 K. We adapted an interface detection algorithm and reparameterized the CHILL/CHILL+ algorithm to capture ice growth. The confinement leads to a shift of the maximum growth rate of ice to a higher temperature than for bulk water. Both the confinement and surface impurities contribute to slowing down the ice growth. For the ice-liquid coexistence at equilibrium, we derive a formulation of Thomson's equation adapted to statistical physics quantities accessible by molecular simulation, and we show that this adapted equation predicts accurately the melting line of bulk and confined ice Ih as a function of pressure. The confinement decreases systematically the melting temperature of ice of about 5 K compared with bulk ice Ih. A premelted water film about 1 nm thick is observed between the solid wall and ice, and its thickness is found to decrease continuously as temperature is lowered. We note that the surface impurities are key to the formation of the premelted water nanofilm when the temperature is lower than 250 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In liquid water, there is a natural tendency to form aggregates that consist of water molecules linked by hydrogen bonds. Such spontaneously formed aggregates are surrounded by a "sea" of disordered water molecules, with both forms remaining in equilibrium. The process of creating water aggregates also takes place in the solvation water of proteins, but in this case, the interactions of water molecules with the protein surface shift the equilibrium of the process. In this paper, we analyze the structural properties of the solvation water in antifreeze proteins (AFPs). The results of molecular dynamics analysis with the use of various parameters related to the structure of solvation water on the protein surface are presented. We found that in the vicinity of the active region responsible for the binding of AFPs to ice, the equilibrium is clearly shifted toward the formation of "ice-like aggregates," and the solvation water has a more ordered ice-like structure. We have demonstrated that a reduction in the tendency to create "ice-like aggregates" results in a significant reduction in the antifreeze activity of the protein. We conclude that shifting the equilibrium in favor of the formation of "ice-like aggregates" in the solvation water in the active region is a prerequisite for the biological functionality of AFPs, at least for AFPs having a well-defined ice binding area. Experiments investigating the properties of deeply supercooled liquid water are needed to develop a comprehensive understanding of water's anomalous properties. One approach involves transiently heating nanoscale water films into the supercooled region for several nanoseconds at a time and then interrogating the water films after they have quenched to cryogenic temperatures. To relate the results obtained with this approach to other experiments and simulations on supercooled water, it is important to understand how closely the quenched structure tracks the (metastable) equilibrium structure of water as a function of the transient heating temperature. A key step involves quantifying the extent to which water that is transiently heated to ambient temperatures [hyperquenched water (HQW)] subsequently relaxes toward the structure of low-density amorphous (LDA) ice as it cools. We analyzed the infrared reflection–absorption spectra of LDA, HQW, and crystalline ice films to determine their complex indices of refraction. With this information, we estimate that HQW retains ∼50%–60% of a structural motif characteristic of water at high temperatures with the balance comprised of a low-temperature motif. This result, along with results from x-ray diffraction experiments on water and amorphous ices, allows one to quantify the fraction of the high-temperature motif at approximately zero pressure as a function of temperature from 150 to 350 K. The possible existence of a liquid–liquid critical point in deeply supercooled water has been a subject of debate due to the challenges associated with providing definitive experimental evidence. The pioneering work by Mishima and Stanley [Nature 392, 164–168 (1998)] sought to shed light on this problem by studying the melting curves of different ice polymorphs and their metastable continuation in the vicinity of the expected liquid–liquid transition and its associated critical point. Based on the continuous or discontinuous changes in the slope of the melting curves, Mishima [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 334 (2000)] suggested that the liquid–liquid critical point lies between the melting curves of ice III and ice V. We explore this conjecture using molecular dynamics simulations with a machine learning model based on ab initio quantum-mechanical calculations. We study the melting curves of ices III, IV, V, VI, and XIII and find that all of them are supercritical and do not intersect the liquid–liquid transition locus. We also find a pronounced, yet continuous, change in the slope of the melting lines upon crossing of the liquid locus of maximum compressibility. Finally, we analyze the literature in light of our findings and conclude that the scenario in which the melting curves are supercritical is favored by the most recent computational and experimental evidence. Although the preponderance of evidence is consistent with the existence of a second critical point in water, the behavior of ice polymorph melting lines does not provide strong evidence in support of this viewpoint, according to our calculations. Understanding the nucleation behavior of water in dilute polymeric solutions is quintessential for the development of suitable artificial ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) agents. Although poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is found to be one of the most potent biomimetic IRI agents, the molecular understanding of the nucleation behavior of water in the presence of PVA is still lacking. Here, we use molecular dynamics to elucidate the role of concentration, degree of supercooling, degree of polymerization, and amphiphilicity of PVA and PVA-like polymers on the homogeneous nucleation of water in dilute polymeric solutions using the seeding method. Using classical nucleation theory (CNT), our simulations indicate an increase in the chemical potential difference between ice and melt that favors ice nucleation. However, it also predicts a significant increase in the ice–melt interfacial energy that impedes nucleation. The relative increase in the interfacial energy dominates the increase in the chemical potential difference, which results in a decrease in the nucleation rate of water with an increase in the solute concentration. This study contradicts the previous simulation study that suggested the promotion of homogeneous ice nucleation by PVA and supports the experimental observations of the heterogeneous origins of ice nucleation. Our results also suggest the non-classical origins of ice nucleation in polymeric solutions and the limitation of the CNT in predicting heterogeneous ice nucleation in polymeric solutions. We here review mostly experimental and some computational work devoted to nucleation in amorphous ices. In fact, there are only a handful of studies in which nucleation and growth in amorphous ices are investigated as two separate processes. In most studies, crystallization temperatures Tx or crystallization rates RJG are accessed for the combined process. Our Review deals with different amorphous ices, namely, vapor-deposited amorphous solid water (ASW) encountered in many astrophysical environments; hyperquenched glassy water (HGW) produced from μm-droplets of liquid water; and low density amorphous (LDA), high density amorphous (HDA), and very high density amorphous (VHDA) ices produced via pressure-induced amorphization of ice I or from high-pressure polymorphs. We cover the pressure range of up to about 6 GPa and the temperature range of up to 270 K, where only the presence of salts allows for the observation of amorphous ices at such high temperatures. In the case of ASW, its microporosity and very high internal surface to volume ratio are the key factors determining its crystallization kinetics. For HGW, the role of interfaces between individual glassy droplets is crucial but mostly neglected in nucleation or crystallization studies. In the case of LDA, HDA, and VHDA, parallel crystallization kinetics to different ice phases is observed, where the fraction of crystallized ices is controlled by the heating rate. A key aspect here is that in different experiments, amorphous ices of different "purities" are obtained, where "purity" here means the "absence of crystalline nuclei." For this reason, "preseeded amorphous ice" and "nuclei-free amorphous ice" should be distinguished carefully, which has not been done properly in most studies. This makes a direct comparison of results obtained in different laboratories very hard, and even results obtained in the same laboratory are affected by very small changes in the preparation protocol. In terms of mechanism, the results are consistent with amorphous ices turning into an ultraviscous, deeply supercooled liquid prior to nucleation. However, especially in preseeded amorphous ices, crystallization from the preexisting nuclei takes place simultaneously. To separate the time scales of crystallization from the time scale of structure relaxation cleanly, the goal needs to be to produce amorphous ices free from crystalline ice nuclei. Two ways to create rigid versions of flexible models are explored. The rigid model can assume the Model's Geometry (MG) as if the molecule is not interacting with any other molecules or the ensemble averaged geometry (EG) under a particular thermodynamic condition. Although the MG model is more straightforward to create, it leads to relatively poor performance. The EG model behaves similarly to the corresponding flexible model (the FL model) and, in some cases, agrees even better with experiments. While the difference between the EG and the FL models is mostly a result of flexibility, the MG and EG models have different dipole moments as a result of an effective induction in the condensed phase. For the three water models studied, the property that shows the most difference is the temperature dependence of density. The MG version of the water model by adaptive force matching for ice and liquid does not possess a temperature of maximum density, which is attributed to a downshift of the putative liquid–liquid phase transition line, leading to the hypothesized second critical point of liquid water to manifest at negative pressure. Ice accumulation on aircraft can lead to aerodynamic performance degradation and even trigger security incidents. However, traditional surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) reactors cannot work while covered by glaze ice. In the present work, a novel three-electrode double-sided SDBD is proposed and employed for glaze ice deicing. Compared with traditional SDBD reactor, three-electrode double-sided SDBD introduces an additional discharge area and grounding electrode. On one hand, the heat generated in the additional discharge area can melt the glaze ice covered on the high-voltage electrode, providing a discharge gap for the subsequent discharge. On the other hand, the introduction of the additional grounding electrode can also dramatically enhance the upper discharge and thermal effect. As a result, compared with the three-electrode single-sided SDBD and two-electrode double-sided SDBD, the three-electrode double-sided SDBD has the highest deposited energy, maximal temperature, and deicing rate. To further optimize the structural design, the effect of air gap length below the dielectric on three-electrode double-sided SDBD is investigated. And it is found that the best deicing performance can be obtained at the air gap length of 1 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Predicting the productivity of the freeze desalination process is of key importance. This paper describes an analytical method to predict the productivity for the progressive freeze desalination process utilizing the rectangular channel crystallizer design. The mass of ice produced during the process is considered a measure of productivity. The model was developed using heat and mass transfer modeling. The effect of coolant temperature (from −8 to −16 °C), liquid flow rate (4400–6000 mL min−1), and initial salt concentration of the liquid (1.5–7 wt%) on the mass of ice produced was investigated. The analytical results of the mass of ice produced were compared with the experimental data. A plausible match was found between the analytical and experimental results, with an error range between 6 % and 9 %. The model can predict the mass of ice produced for given values of the initial salt concentration of the liquid, initial mass of the liquid, salt concentration of thawed ice, liquid flow rate, and coolant temperature. The environmental temperature alters the frictional behaviour by changing the state of the current-carrying contact interface, which makes the electrical contact invalid. In this work, the effects of three different temperatures (− 20, 0, 20 °C) on the current-carrying tribological behaviour of C–Cu tribo-pairs in high humidity environment (85%) were discussed. The evolution laws of friction coefficient, wear volume, contact surface properties, and contact resistance of tribo-pairs were studied, and the current-carrying wear mechanism of C–Cu at low temperature was analyzed in depth. The variation of friction coefficient with temperature shows a similar rule before and after current-carrying, that is, regardless of the current, the friction coefficient increases as temperature falls. However, the average friction coefficient at each temperature is lower than that without current. Although it will hasten the material surface's oxidation, a drop in temperature will effectively lessen the transfer behaviour of copper to carbon surface and reduce the wear volume of carbon materials. The amount of copper transferred increases as current rises. Compared with current, the change of temperature has a greater impact on the damage of tribo-pairs. At room temperature, the contact resistance under high current is greater than that of low current. However, the rule is just the opposite under low temperature (0 and − 20 °C). In addition, at 0 °C, although the contact resistance of low current (5 A) decreases significantly in the early stage of friction, its average resistance and fluctuation amplitude are the largest. As the temperature decreases, the current-carrying wear mechanism of C–Cu contact pairs gradually changes from adhesive wear to fatigue wear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ice management is essential for maintaining the safety of offshore operations in Arctic regions. We present the combined results of three experiments conducted in a full-mission bridge simulator specially designed for ice management. From a quantitative analysis of the results, we infer the effect of three variables on performance: (1) experience, (2) training, and (3) Decision Support System (DSS). The results confirm that experience and training improve performance for untrained and inexperienced simulator participants. The DSS also improves performance, but with a smaller effect. Qualitative observations using vessel position heat-map diagrams and exit interviews suggested that novice participants using the DSS adopted expert strategies but carried out their tasks more slowly and with less precision. This has important consequences for the design of a future DSS used in training simulators or onboard ships. Potential improvements to the DSS design might include real-time feedback to the user, a redesign of the human-machine interface (HMI), and increasing user input and customization with a human factors focus. In cold regions, the frequent occurrence of frost damage seriously affects the safety and stability of tunnel projects during construction and service time. Analyzing the formation mechanism of ice congestion in the drainage channel is of great significance for reducing the risk of frost damage. For this purpose, a mathematical model was proposed in the present work to investigate the freezing properties of water flow in the drainage channel. In this model, the latent heat of the water–ice phase change was taken into account to describe the formation process of frazil ice. Combined with the method of energy conservation, the critical distance of water freezing was derived theoretically. The field experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation were carried out to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model. It showed that the estimated critical position of water freezing agreed well with the experimental and simulation results. Subsequently, the effects of hydraulic and thermodynamic factors on the freezing process of water flow were further discussed. As a practical application, the proposed mathematical model is utilized to evaluate the safety of the drainage channel of a railway tunnel in cold regions. The results demonstrate that when the flow discharge is smaller than 2,600 m3/day, there is a risk of ice congestion in the drainage channel within a range of about 960 m from the water outlet. Therefore, freeze-proof measures such as (1) thermal insulation cover plate, (2) electric heat tracing system, and (3) ground-source heat pump system should be employed in this range. This study presents a systematic literature review of ice load measurements on dams. Several hypotheses about the relationship between the maximum ice load and external variables are tested using regression analysis on the data collected from the literature. The performed tests show that ice thickness, water level change category, and dam height are factors that have a significant and relevant relationship with the magnitude of all measured ice loads. The ice thickness is the only tested variable that also shows a significant and relevant relationship with differences in ice load between winters at one dam. The variation in recorded ice load from several sensor positions at one dam during the same winter is considerable. Generally, the difference between the sensor area and the structure–ice interaction area is large, resulting in extensive extrapolation and uncertainties regarding the representativeness of the measured results. Self-melting ice asphalt pavement materials inhibit pavement freezing and improve driving safety. This paper aims to study the long-term salt release characteristics of self-melting ice asphalt mixtures and the impact on pavement after complete salt release. Firstly, a method to accelerate the rapid release of salt based on the Los Angeles abrasion tester. Then, long-term salt release patterns were elucidated under the influence of deicing agent dosage, type of asphalt, and type of gradation. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the pavement performance after complete salt release is conducted. The results indicate that the release efficiency of the Los Angeles abrasion tester method has increased by 91 times compared to the magnetic stirrer immersion flushing method and by 114 times compared to the natural soaking method. The SBS-modified self-melting ice asphalt mixture possesses a longer duration of salt release, but the uniformity of salt release is inferior. Salt release duration is directly proportional to the dosage of deicing agents. SMA-13 self-melting ice asphalt mixture exhibits poorer uniformity in salt release. After complete salt release, high-temperature stability of self-melting ice asphalt mixtures decreased by 31.6%, low-temperature performance decreased by 15.4%, water stability decreased by 26.7%, and fatigue life decreased by 35.9%. Mounting experimental evidence supports the existence of a liquid--liquid transition (LLT) in high-pressure supercooled water. However, fast crystallization of supercooled water has impeded identification of the LLT line TLL(p) in experiments. While the most accurate all-atom (AA) water models display a LLT, their computational cost limits investigations of its interplay with ice formation. Coarse-grained (CG) models provide over 100-fold computational efficiency gain over AA models, enabling the study of water crystallization, but have not yet shown to have a LLT. Here, we demonstrate that the CG machine-learned water model Machine-Learned Bond-Order Potential (ML-BOP) has a LLT that ends in a critical point at Pc = 170 ± 10 MPa and Tc = 181 ± 3 K. The TLL(p) of ML-BOP is almost identical to the one of TIP4P/2005, adding to the similarity in the equation of state of liquid water in both models. Cooling simulations reveal that ice crystallization is fastest at the LLT and its supercritical continuation of maximum heat capacity, supporting a mechanistic relationship between the structural transformation of water to a low-density liquid (LDL) and ice formation. We find no signature of liquid-liquid criticality in the ice crystallization temperatures. ML-BOP replicates the competition between formation of LDL and ice observed in ultrafast experiments of decompression of the high-density liquid (HDL) into the region of stability of LDL. The simulations reveal that crystallization occurs prior to the coarsening of the HDL and LDL domains, obscuring the distinction between the highly metastable first-order LLT and pronounced structural fluctuations along its supercritical continuation. Frozen water is the most widespread type of ice present in ice caves and forms ice stalagmites and stalactites as well as floor ice, which is often several meters thick. Organic macroremains are commonly rare in this type of cave ice, which makes it difficult to establish a chronology and severely limits the use of such ice deposits as paleoenvironmental archives. Here, the chronology of such ice deposits in the inner part of the glaciated Eisriesenwelt, one of the world's largest ice caves located in the European Alps of Austria, is determined by a combination of radiocarbon and 230Th dating of cryogenic calcite. The data suggest that this cave ice has formed over the last three millennia, with a marked increase in the average accumulation rate during the thirteenth century, coinciding with the onset of the Little Ice Age in the Alps. Data from a second site closer to the entrance suggests that large parts of this tourist cave were likely ice-free during the Medieval Warm Period and that a substantial part of the ice is probably a relic of the Little Ice Age. The current warming has already penetrated deeper into the cave than during the Medieval Warm Period, although air exchange during the warm season is restricted by a door at the cave entrance. Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between biological maturation and success in adolescence and adulthood in male Swedish ice hockey players. Methods: Anthropometric records of players in certified ice hockey high schools between 1998 and 2017 were retrieved (n = 4787). The database was complemented with records of Swedish junior national teams (U16, U18, U20) and National Hockey League (NHL) appearances. Biological maturation was recorded as a percentage of adult height (%AH), and selection probabilities were estimated using a generalised linear mixed effects model. Biological age was determined by comparing players with age-matched growth reference values. Categories of %AH, standard deviation z-scores and biological age offset describing early, on-time and late maturation were created. Results: A total of 217 players had played on the U16 national team (junior success), and 96 reached the NHL (adult success). The difference [95% confidence interval (CI)] in baseline %AH between players with junior versus adult success was − 0.75 (− 0.39, − 1.11). Looking at age-offset categories in junior success, 30% of players were early maturing and 19% of players were late maturing, showing a bias towards early maturation (p < 0.01). In contrast, more late-maturing players (40%) achieved adult success than early-maturing players (25%), and NHL players had significantly later maturation [%AH: − 0.48 (− 0.80, − 0.16)] than non-NHL players. Conclusion: This unique 20-year analysis shows that junior success in male ice hockey is positively related to early maturation, while adult success is inversely related to advanced maturation. Thin ice with a thickness of less than half a meter produces strong salt and heat fluxes which affect deep water circulation and weather in the polar oceans. The identification of thin ice areas is essential for ship navigation. We have developed thin ice detection algorithms for the AMSR2 and FY-3C MWRI radiometer data over the Arctic Ocean. Thin ice (<20 cm) is detected based on the classification of the H-polarization 89–36-GHz gradient ratio (GR8936H) and the 36-GHz polarization ratio (PR36) signatures with a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and thick ice restoration with GR3610H. The brightness temperature ( T B ) data are corrected for the atmospheric effects following an EUMETSAT OSI SAF correction method in sea ice concentration retrieval algorithms. The thin ice detection algorithms were trained and validated using MODIS ice thickness charts covering the Barents and Kara Seas. Thin ice detection is applied to swath T B datasets and the swath charts are compiled into a daily thin ice chart using 10 km pixel size for AMSR2 and 20 km for MWRI. On average, the likelihood of misclassifying thick ice as thin in the ATIDA2 daily charts is 7.0% and 42% for reverse misclassification. For the MWRI chart, these accuracy figures are 4% and 53%. A comparison of the MWRI chart to the AMSR2 chart showed a very high match (98%) for the thick ice class with SIC > 90% but only a 53% match for the thin ice class. These accuracy disagreements are due to the much coarser resolution of MWRI, which gives larger spatial averaging of T B signatures, and thus, less detection of thin ice. The comparison of the AMSR2 and MWRI charts with the SMOS sea ice thickness chart showed a rough match in the thin ice versus thick ice classification. Subsurface exploration of ice-covered planets and moons presents communications challenges because of the need to communicate through kilometers of ice. The objective of this task is to develop the capability to wirelessly communicate through kilometers of ice and thus complement the potentially failure-prone tethers deployed behind an ice-penetrating probe on Ocean Worlds. In this paper, the preliminary work on the development of wireless deep-ice communication is presented and discussed. The communication test and acoustic attenuation measurements in ice have been made by embedding acoustic transceivers in glacial ice at the Matanuska Glacier, Anchorage, Alaska. Field test results show that acoustic communication is viable through ice, demonstrating the transmission of data and image files in the 13–18 kHz band over 100 m. The results suggest that communication over many kilometers of ice thickness could be feasible by employing reduced transmitting frequencies around 1 kHz, though future work is needed to better constrain the likely acoustic attenuation properties through a refrozen borehole. Understanding the reachability of water ice by future in-situ experiments near the lunar poles is crucial for supporting growing exploration plans and constraining the uncertainties on its genesis and distribution. To achieve this objective, we perform a thorough three-dimensional mapping of the distribution of water ice in the lunar polar regions (70° onward), integrating radar, optical, and neutron detector observations from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission (LRO). Our analysis reveals ∼5-to-8-fold larger expanse of subsurface water ice (∼1-3 m depth) compared to surface water ice (up to 1 m depth) for the north and south poles, respectively. Our investigation cannot rule out the possibility of deep-seated water ice deposits in the lunar poles that remains beyond the detection capabilities of existing instruments on LRO. Moreover, we find that the extent of water ice in the northern polar region (∼1100 ± 74 km2) is twice that in the southern polar region (∼562 ± 54 km2). Our mapping also suggests that the dichotomous latitudinal distribution and the antipodal longitudinal distribution of water ice are likely driven by Mare volcanism and preferential cratering. We provide additional evidence that outgassing during Imbrian volcanism was probably the primary source of subsurface water ice in the lunar poles, which favors larger expanse over meteoritic sources. This paper is aimed at clear ice making. To this end, a purpose-built apparatus that controls the solidification rate was specially designed and constructed to assess the trade-offs between ice clearness (quality) and production rate (quantity). An image-based ice clearness evaluation technique was devised and adopted to compute a figure-of-merit for the ice quality. 30 ml ice cube samples were produced in a closed ice tray for either prescribed heat flux (650, 1300 and 1700 W m−2) or surface temperature (−4, −8 and −12 °C) at the bottom wall, while a 25 mm EPS insulation was adopted for top and lateral walls. The experiments were carried out using both tap and boiled water, whose initial amount of dissolved gas was monitored. In recent decades, the Inner Mongolia Reach of the Yellow River (IMRYR) in China has experienced new characteristics in terms of ice conditions due to human activities and climate change. It is crucial to develop a comprehensive river ice model for this reach that reflects the changing physical characteristics of ice events. However, simulating river ice process in the IMRYR using numerical model is challenging due to the scarcity of observed data on river geometry, hydrology, meteorology, and river ice conditions. With latest field measurements, this study examined the spatiotemporal variations of ice conditions in the IMRYR. In the development of river ice model, this study tackled various challenges such as incomplete river geometry, insufficient tributary flow information, and the identification of ice bridge locations. By improving the one-dimensional river ice model, the study simulated the ice development process during the 2012–2013 ice flood season in the IMRYR. A comparative analysis was conducted between the simulated and observed water temperature, ice cover thickness, ice front locations, and flows, showing a good agreement. This study analyzed and determined the ice hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, and relevant river parameters, providing a deeper understanding of the intricate interactions and dynamics associated with the formation and behavior of river ice in the Yellow River. This research can provide scientific basis and methodological support for ice disaster prevention and control in the Yellow River, as well as insights and technical means for simulating comprehensive river ice processes in natural rivers and artificial channels. The Yellow River is one of the rivers in China that experiences frequent ice-related disasters, with the main occurrences happening in the Inner Mongolia Reach (IMR). In recent decades, the IMR has faced new challenges in ice evolution, including changing climatic conditions, severe channel siltation, and expanded ice-related channel storage, making the understanding of ice conditions more complex. The China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, commissioned by the Hydrographic Bureau of the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, conducted numerical simulations of the ice processes in the IMR. Based on the new characteristics of ice conditions in the Yellow River, a mathematical model was proposed to simulate the development of winter ice conditions in data-scarce regions. The one-dimensional river ice process model was enhanced to enable dynamic simulations of the ice processes in the IMR, and accurately capturing the evolution of winter water temperature, ice cover thickness, ice front progression, flow rate, and water level. This study provides valuable scientific basis for ice forecasting, ice control operations, and disaster prevention in the Yellow River. Present understanding of Greenland's subglacial geology is derived mostly from interpolation of geologic mapping of its ice‐free margins and unconstrained by geophysical data. Here we refine the extent of its geologic provinces by synthesizing geophysical constraints on subglacial geology from seismic, gravity, magnetic and topographic data. North of 72°N, no province clearly extends across the whole island, leaving three distinct subglacial regions yet to be reconciled with margin geology. Geophysically coherent anomalies and apparent province boundaries are adjacent to the onset of faster ice flow at both Petermann Glacier and the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream. Separately, based on their subaerial expression, dozens of unusually long, straight and sub‐parallel subglacial valleys cross Greenland's interior and are not yet resolved by current syntheses of its subglacial topography. By necessity, scientists have relied mostly on studying the rocks exposed along Greenland's edge to understand the island's interior geology. We examine geophysical data from seismometers on the ground, satellites that measure Earth's gravity and magnetic fields and surface topography, and aircraft that measure those same properties and ice thickness. We draw a new map of Greenland's geology beneath the ice sheet by examining where those data show similar signals regarding the nature of the underlying rock, and where they could be related to mapped rock exposures. We also find evidence of some areas with geophysical expressions that are distinct from the rocks found at the island's edges. Some geologic structures, which are entirely covered by ice, may affect how ice flows from Greenland's vast interior toward its coast. Finally, we identify many valleys beneath the ice that are very long and often aligned with each other, but which are not yet fully captured in present maps of the topography beneath the ice. AbstractA clear and comprehensive understanding of the dynamic changes in ice adhesion during the operation of thermal de-icing systems on an airplane can help in realizing safer operation of these systems. In this study, we aim to elucidate the ice adhesion decay pattern on different materials under thermal de-icing conditions. Molds are used to form ice on the surfaces of aluminum alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and then their initial and dynamic ice adhesive strengths are measured. The effects of surface roughness and heating rate are also explored. The results show that the residual adhesive strength is almost linearly proportional to the instant temperature before it rises to −0.5 °C for the three types of metallic surfaces. However, for PTFE surfaces, instead of a reduction in the adhesive strength caused by heat, adhesive failure occurs due to the high stress induced by thermal deformation of the substrate. Under dynamic heating conditions, the impact of substrate’s roughness on the adhesive strength is significantly weakened, and the heating rate has a minor effect on the relationship between adhesive strength and instant temperature. Hydrogen may become a substitute for liquid fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions reductions in internal combustion engines. Numerical simulations play a critical role in the advancement of these engines, with laminar flame speed being the main input. Experimental data of hydrogen flame speed at elevated pressures are scarce, due to the instability of the flames. Nonetheless, stable hydrogen flames can be predicted using chemical kinetics models. Moreover, the injection of water into the hydrogen fuelled engine could offer several benefits to engine combustion and emission performance, as it modulates the laminar flame speed within the combustion chamber and this effect has not been completely understood. Currently, no correlation exists to predict the laminar flame speed of hydrogen-air combustion with water addition under lean mixture engine operating conditions. In this study, we have extended the newly developed laminar flame speed correlation of hydrogen-air combustion to account for the effects of water addition under engine relevant conditions by using chemical kinetic laminar flame speed values. The laminar flame speed correlation was derived for pressures from 10 to 70 bar, temperatures from 400 to 800 K, equivalence ratios from 0.35 to 1 and water addition by mole from 0 to 20%. The hydrogen laminar flame speed correlation was expressed using polynomial forms with reduced order and number of terms with optimized values of coefficients. Aircraft icing refers to the accumulation of ice on the surface and components of an aircraft when supercooled water droplets collide with the aircraft above freezing levels (at altitudes at which the temperature is below 0 °C), which requires vigilant monitoring to avert aviation accidents attributable to icing. In response to this imperative, the Weather Radar Center (WRC) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has developed a real-time icing detection algorithm. We utilized 3D dual-polarimetric radar variables, 3D atmospheric variables, and aircraft icing data and statistically analyzed these variables within the icing areas determined by aircraft icing data from 2018–2022. An algorithm capable of detecting icing potential areas (icing potential) was formulated by applying these characteristics. Employing this detection algorithm enabled the classification of icing potential into three stages: precipitation, icing caution, and icing warning. The algorithm was validated, demonstrating a notable performance with a probability of detection value of 0.88. The algorithm was applied to three distinct icing cases under varying environmental conditions—frontal, stratiform, and cumuliform clouds—thereby offering real-time observable icing potential across the entire Korean Peninsula. Introduction Methods Findings Discussion In hemodialysis patients, pain associated with needle insertion into an arteriovenous fistula is a physical and psychological problem. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of pre‐puncture application of an ice pack, EMLA cream, or lidocaine spray to reduce pain associated with access puncture.This was a multicenter study done in nine hemodialysis centers in Iraq. The study utilized a randomized, parallel‐group design, in which patients being dialyzed using an arteriovenous access were allocated into one of four groups. Access puncture was preceded by nothing (control group), by use of ice pack cooling at the puncture site, by application of EMLA cream, or by application of lidocaine spray. Pain after access puncture was assessed during a single treatment for each patient. Pain was quantified using a Visual Analogue Scale.A total of 1548 patients agreed to participate, and 1041 patients were included in the data analysis. Use of an ice pack, EMLA cream, or lidocaine spray each was associated with a lower pain score on access puncture compared with no pretreatment. The mean Visual Analogue Scores in the four groups were: 69.7 ± 15.7 in the controls, 39.8 ± 13.2 in the ice pack group, 45 ± 18.4 in the EMLA group, and 52.9 ± 15.2 in lidocaine group. Ranking of the pain severity scores suggested that ice pack use was associated with the least pain, followed by use of EMLA cream and use of lidocaine spray (severity score ranking, from lowest to highest, being 1.62, 2.18, and 2.63, respectively).Application of an ice pack prior to vascular access puncture is a fast and inexpensive technique to limit pain associated with this procedure. In the simulations of ice accretion, accurately modeling the impact of surface roughness and calculating the separated flow are crucial aspects. A modified laminar–turbulent transition model that incorporates both separation and roughness-induced transition correction is employed for icing simulations. An iced airfoil was selected to validate the modified model's predictive capability for large separation, and a rough airfoil was utilized to assess the modified model's capability in simulating roughness effects. Icing simulations under different conditions are conducted for an airfoil. The results indicate that roughness induces an earlier laminar–turbulent transition, thereby influencing the heat transfer coefficients. The effects of separation and roughness correction on rime icing simulation are minimal, but they are significant for glaze icing simulation, resulting in more accurate predictions of maximum ice thickness and ice horn orientation. The simulated glaze ice causes more pronounced separation and more substantial reductions in lift compared to simulated rime ice. The water entry of a projectile constrained by polar floating ice presents a unique cross-media challenge. This paper investigates the dynamics of oblique water entry for a projectile influenced by floating ice using the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) method. The validity of the numerical method has been confirmed through experimental validation. The water entry process of a projectile from the side of the floating ice is examined. The evolution of the cavity and the movement patterns of objects as the distance between the projectile and the floating ice decreases toward collision are investigated. The influence of water on the critical collision distance between the projectile and the floating ice during oblique water entry is analyzed. Additionally, the physical mechanism of floating ice deflection through collision is investigated based on the theory of cavity dynamics. Subsequently, the study focuses on the oblique water entry process of a projectile colliding with the upper surface of the floating ice. Different entry angles determine the collision mode between the projectile and the floating ice surface. This study also examines how varying entry angles influence cavity evolution and object movement patterns during oblique collisions. Different collision modes between the projectile and the floating ice lead to asymmetric cavity evolution and various modes of object deflection motion. Finally, changes in the flow field and vortex structure during oblique collisions are studied to examine the influence of the FSI process between the projectile and the floating ice on the flow field. The Monte‐Carlo ice microphysics model McSnow is extended by an explicit habit prediction scheme, combined with the hydrodynamic theory of Böhm. Böhm's original cylindrical shape assumption for prolates is compared against recent lab results, showing that interpolation between cylinder and prolate yields the best agreement. For constant temperature and supersaturation, the predicted mass, size, and density of the ice crystals agree well with the laboratory results, and a comparison with real clouds using the polarizability ratio shows regimes capable of improvement. An updated form of the inherent growth function to describe the primary habit growth tendencies is proposed and combined with a habit‐dependent ventilation coefficient. The modifications contrast the results from general mass size relations and significantly impact the main ice microphysical processes. Depending on the thermodynamic regime, ice habits significantly alter depositional growth and affect aggregation and riming. The influence of primary ice behavior on precipitation formation needs to be considered in future development of microphysical parameterizations, but the consideration of secondary habits and the geometry of aggregates should be further improved in future work. Year-round snow cover is a characteristic of the entire Antarctic sea ice cover, which has significant implications for the energy and mass budgets of sea ice, e.g., by preventing surface melt in summer and enhancing sea ice growth through extensive snow ice formation. However, substantial observational gaps in the seasonal cycle of Antarctic sea ice and its snow cover limit the understanding of important processes in the ice-covered Southern Ocean. They also introduce large uncertainties in satellite remote sensing applications and climate studies. Here we present results from 10 years of autonomous snow observations from Snow Buoys in the Weddell Sea. To distinguish between actual snow depth and potential snow ice thickness within the accumulated snowpack, a one-dimensional thermodynamic sea ice model is applied along the drift trajectories of the buoys. The results show that potential snow ice formation, with an average maximum thickness of 35 cm , was detected along 41 % of the total track length of the analyzed Snow Buoy tracks, which corresponds to about one-quarter of the snow accumulation. In addition, we simulate the evolution of internal snow properties along the drift trajectories with the more complex SNOWPACK model, which results in superimposed ice thicknesses between 0 and 14 cm on top of the snow ice layer. Icepack (v1.1.0) – the column thermodynamics model of the Community Ice CodE (CICE) version 6 – is used to assess how changing the thermodynamics from the physics (hereafter BL99) to the mushy-layer physics impacts the model performance in reproducing in situ landfast ice observations from two ice mass balance (IMB) buoys co-deployed in the landfast ice close to Nain (Labrador) in February 2017. To this end, a new automated surface retrieval algorithm is used to determine the in situ ice thickness, snow depth, basal ice congelation and snow-ice formation from the measured vertical temperature profiles. Icepack simulations are run to reproduce these observations using each thermodynamics scheme, with a particular interest in how the different physics influence the representation of snow-ice formation and ice congelation. Results show that the BL99 parameterization represents well the ice congelation but underrepresents the snow-ice contribution to the ice mass balance. In particular, defining snow-ice formation based on the hydrostatic balance alone does not reproduce the negative freeboards observed for several days in the IMB observations, resulting in an earlier snow-flooding onset, a positive ice thickness bias and reduced snow depth variations. We find that the mushy-layer thermodynamics with default parameters significantly degrades the model performance, overestimating both the congelation growth and snow-ice formation. The simulated thermodynamics response to flooding, however, better represents the observations, and the best results are obtained when allowing for negative freeboards in the mushy-layer physics. We find that the mushy-layer thermodynamics produces a larger variability in congelation rates at the ice bottom interface, alternating between periods of exceedingly fast growth and periods of unrealistic basal melt. This pattern is related to persistent brine dilution in the lowest ice layer by the congelation and brine drainage parameterizations. We also show that the mushy-layer congelation parameterization produces significant frazil formation, which is not expected in a landfast ice context. This behavior is attributed to the congelation parameterization not fully accounting for the conductive heat flux imbalance at the ice–ocean boundary. We propose a modification of the mushy-layer congelation scheme that largely reduces the frazil formation and allows for better tuning of the congelation rates to match the observations. Our results demonstrate that the mushy-layer physics and its parameters can be tuned to closely match the in situ observations, although more observations are needed to better constrain them. Quantifying the link between microstructure and effective elastic properties of snow, firn, and bubbly ice is essential for many applications in cryospheric sciences. The microstructure of snow and ice can be characterized by different types of fabrics (crystallographic and geometrical), which give rise to macroscopically anisotropic elastic behavior. While the impact of the crystallographic fabric has been extensively studied in deep firn, the present work investigates the influence of the geometrical fabric over the entire range of possible volume fractions. To this end, we have computed the effective elasticity tensor of snow, firn, and ice by finite-element simulations based on 391 X-ray tomography images comprising samples from the laboratory, the Alps, Greenland, and Antarctica. We employed a variant of Eshelby's tensor that has been previously utilized for the parameterization of thermal and dielectric properties of snow and utilized Hashin–Shtrikman bounds to capture the nonlinear interplay between density and geometrical anisotropy. From that we derive a closed-form parameterization for all components of the (transverse isotropic) elasticity tensor for all volume fractions using two fit parameters per tensor component. Finally, we used the Thomsen parameter to compare the geometrical anisotropy to the maximal theoretical crystallographic anisotropy in bubbly ice. While the geometrical anisotropy clearly dominates up to ice volume fractions of ϕ≈0.7 , a thorough understanding of elasticity in bubbly ice may require a coupled elastic theory that includes geometrical and crystallographic anisotropy. This research presents a comprehensive environmental assessment of a small mountain permafrost catchment of the Anmangynda River in the Upper Kolyma Highland (Northeastern Asia) over the period of 2021–2023. The study reveals significant diversity in climatic, geocryological, and hydrogeological conditions within this confined area, emphasizing the need for extensive field data collection and monitoring in vast permafrost regions with limited data availability. Key findings include variations in ground temperature, maximum seasonal thaw depth, and depths of zero annual amplitudes of ground temperature at different elevations and landscape types. Groundwater and surface flow dynamics within spring aufeis basins exhibit complex geocryological regimes influenced by icing processes. The presence of aufeis and its impact on local hydrology highlight the ecological significance of this phenomenon. Future research should focus on long-term trends in permafrost dynamics and their relationship with climate change, as well as the ecological effects of aufeis formation on local ecosystems. The study underscores the importance of a multi-faceted approach to environmental assessment, incorporating various environmental parameters and processes, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interactions within the cryosphere and their responses to changing climate conditions. The roles of surface characteristics of the feldspar surface on ice nucleation have remained elusive. Here, simple strategies are reported to quantitatively analyze the effects of the surface morphology and molecular composition of the potassium‐feldspar surface on ice nucleation. The steps are found to be responsible to the high ice nucleation efficacy according to the fact that water drop freezing temperature increases by about 4.5 °C atop the freshly cleavage feldspar surface being rich of steps comparing to the flattened ones. After the molecular component and atomic structure are destroyed by the fluorination, a tremendous decrease of the ice nucleation temperatures by around 9.0 °C is observed on both cleavage and flattened surfaces, and the steps still improve the ice nucleation activity of the hydrophobic cleavage surfaces. This is an exercise to explore the concentration of lithium, lithium-7 isotope and the possible presence of black dirty ice on the lunar surface using spectral data obtained from the Clementine mission. The main interest in tracing the lithium and presence of dark ice on the lunar surface is closely related to future human settlement missions on the moon. We investigate the distribution of lithium and 7 Li isotope on the lunar surface by employing spectral data from the Clementine images. We utilized visible (VIS–NIR) imagery at wavelengths of 450, 750, 900, 950 and 1000 nm, along with near-infrared (NIR–SWIR) at 1100, 1250, 1500, 2000, 2600 and 2780 nm, encompassing 11 bands in total. This dataset offers a comprehensive coverage of about 80% of the lunar surface, with resolutions ranging from 100 to 500 m, spanning latitudes from 80°S to 80°N. In order to extract quantitative abundance of lithium, ground-truth sites were used to calibrate the Clementine images. Samples (specifically, 12045, 15058, 15475, 15555, 62255, 70035, 74220 and 75075) returned from Apollo missions 12, 15, 16 and 17 have been correlated to the Clementine VIS–NIR bands and five spectral ratios. The five spectral ratios calculated synthesize the main spectral features of sample spectra that were grouped by their lithium and 7 Li content using Principal Component Analysis. The ratios spectrally characterize substrates of anorthosite, silica-rich basalts, olivine-rich basalts, high-Ti mare basalts and Orange and Glasses soils. Our findings reveal a strong linear correlation between the spectral parameters and the lithium content in the eight Apollo samples. With the values of the 11 Clementine bands and the 5 spectral ratios, we performed linear regression models to estimate the concentration of lithium and 7 Li. Also, we calculated Digital Terrain Models (Altitude, Slope, Aspect, DirectInsolation and WindExposition) from LOLA-DTM to discover relations between relief and spatial distribution of the extended models of lithium and 7 Li. The analysis was conducted in a mask polygon around the Apollo 15 landing site. This analysis seeks to uncover potential 7 Li enrichment through spallation processes, influenced by varying exposure to solar wind. To explore the possibility of finding ice mixed with regolith (often referred to as 'black ice'), we extended results to the entire Clementine coverage spectral indices, calculated with a library (350–2500 nm) of ice samples contaminated with various concentrations of volcanic particles. Ice accumulation on infrastructure poses severe safety risks and economic losses, necessitating effective detection and monitoring solutions. This study introduces a novel approach employing surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors, known for their small size, wireless operation, energy self-sufficiency, and retrofit capability. Utilizing a SAW dual-mode delay line device on a 64°-rotated Y-cut lithium niobate substrate, we demonstrate a solution for combined ice detection and temperature measurement. In addition to the shear-horizontal polarized leaky SAW, our findings reveal an electrically excitable Rayleigh-type wave in the X+90° direction on the same cut. Experimental results in a temperature chamber confirm capability for reliable differentiation between liquid water and ice loading and simultaneous temperature measurements. In the winter seasons, road icing is amongst the most significant threats towards road safety, which is considered as a super dangerous weather condition. This study aims to optimize road deicing predictions using machine learning (ML) techniques. By collecting data from sensors including pavement temperature (PT), pavement friction coefficient (PFC), pavement condition (PC), thickness of water film (TWF), freezing temperature, ice content (IC) and ice warning value (IWV), we analyzed crucial parameters affecting road deicing - road surface temperature. Predicting pavement icing (PI) is critical in the transportation field. To achieve this, we utilized the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) ML model to estimate icing conditions on the 2nd Ring South Road in Jinan, China. By considering relevant parameters of the road surface within a specific timeframe, we attempted to forecast road temperature, providing a novel approach for predicting road icing. Experimental results demonstrated the model's ability to accurately predict icing conditions. Observations show predictive skill of the minimum sea ice extent (Min SIE) from late winter anomalous offshore ice drift along the Eurasian coastline, leading to local ice thickness anomalies at the onset of the melt season—a signal then amplified by the ice–albedo feedback. We assess whether the observed seasonal predictability of September sea ice extent (Sept SIE) from Fram Strait Ice Area Export (FSIAE; a proxy for Eurasian coastal divergence) is present in global climate model (GCM) large ensembles, namely the CESM2-LE, GISS-E2.1-G, FLOR-LE, CNRM-CM6-1, and CanESM5. All models show distinct periods where winter FSIAE anomalies are negatively correlated with the May sea ice thickness (May SIT) anomalies along the Eurasian coastline, and the following Sept Arctic SIE, as in observations. Counterintuitively, several models show occasional periods where winter FSIAE anomalies are positively correlated with the following Sept SIE anomalies when the mean ice thickness is large, or late in the simulation when the sea ice is thin, and/or when internal variability increases. More important, periods with weak correlation between winter FSIAE and the following Sept SIE dominate, suggesting that summer melt processes generally dominate over late-winter preconditioning and May SIT anomalies. In general, we find that the coupling between the winter FSIAE and ice thickness anomalies along the Eurasian coastline at the onset of the melt season is a ubiquitous feature of GCMs and that the relationship with the following Sept SIE is dependent on the mean Arctic sea ice thickness. Condensation frosting causes performance degradation and other problems in various fields, such as wind power generation and heat exchangers. During the initial stage of condensation frosting, freezing propagation from frozen to supercooled water droplets is often observed, the dynamics of which must be clarified to solve these problems. A frozen droplet forms a protrusion to an adjacent supercooled droplet, known as an ice bridge; the growth velocity of the ice bridge is essential for discussing freezing propagation. In this study, we fabricated wettability-patterned surfaces on silicon wafers to obtain droplets with controlled spacing and size and visualized and evaluated the ice bridge formation process under reproducible conditions, and the local velocity change in the ice bridge growth was measured for the first time. Experiments showed the local velocity of the ice bridge growth increased as the tip of the ice bridge approached the adjacent supercooled droplet. Simple model equations for the freezing propagation velocity and ice bridge growth were proposed. The proposed model agreed well with the measured velocity and did not include any fitting or geometric parameters of the ice bridge or droplets, such as volume or shape.
