Background: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue slides are routinely used in cancer diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and stored in biobanks, but their utilization in Raman spectroscopy-based studies has been limited due to the background coming from embedding media., Methods: Spontaneous Raman spectroscopy was used for molecular fingerprinting of FFPE tissue from 46 patient samples with known methylation subtypes. Spectra were used to construct tumor/non-tumor, IDH1WT/IDH1mut, and methylation-subtype classifiers. Support vector machine and random forest were used to identify the most discriminatory Raman frequencies. Stimulated Raman spectroscopy was used to validate the frequencies identified. Mass spectrometry of glioma cell lines and TCGA were used to validate the biological findings., Results: Here, we develop APOLLO (rAman-based PathOLogy of maLignant gliOma)-a computational workflow that predicts different subtypes of glioma from spontaneous Raman spectra of FFPE tissue slides. Our novel APOLLO platform distinguishes tumors from nontumor tissue and identifies novel Raman peaks corresponding to DNA and proteins that are more intense in the tumor. APOLLO differentiates isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 mutant (IDH1mut) from wild-type (IDH1WT) tumors and identifies cholesterol ester levels to be highly abundant in IDHmut glioma. Moreover, APOLLO achieves high discriminative power between finer, clinically relevant glioma methylation subtypes, distinguishing between the CpG island hypermethylated phenotype (G-CIMP)-high and G-CIMP-low molecular phenotypes within the IDH1mut types., Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the potential of label-free Raman spectroscopy to classify glioma subtypes from FFPE slides and to extract meaningful biological information thus opening the door for future applications on these archived tissues in other cancers., (© The Author(s) 2024. The brain has computational capabilities that surpass those of modern systems, being able to solve complex problems efficiently in a simple way. Neuromorphic engineering aims to mimic biology in order to develop new systems capable of incorporating such capabilities. Bio-inspired learning systems continue to be a challenge that must be solved, and much work needs to be done in this regard. Among all brain regions, the hippocampus stands out as an autoassociative short-term memory with the capacity to learn and recall memories from any fragment of them. These characteristics make the hippocampus an ideal candidate for developing bio-inspired learning systems that, in addition, resemble content-addressable memories. Therefore, in this work we propose a bio-inspired spiking content-addressable memory model based on the CA3 region of the hippocampus with the ability to learn, forget and recall memories, both orthogonal and non-orthogonal, from any fragment of them. The model was implemented on the SpiNNaker hardware platform using Spiking Neural Networks. A set of experiments based on functional, stress and applicability tests were performed to demonstrate its correct functioning. Background: The design and development of patient-centered digital health solutions requires user involvement, for example through usability testing. Although there are guidelines for conducting usability tests, there is a lack of knowledge about the technical, human, and organizational factors that influence the success of the tests., Objective: To summarize the success factors of usability testing in the context of patient-centered digital health solutions., Method: We considered three case studies and collected experiences related to time management, relevance of results and challenges encountered., Results: Success factors relate to participant privacy and data protection, test environment setup, device and application readiness, user comfort and accessibility, test tools and procedures, and adaptability to user limitations., Conclusions: Small organizational and technical details can have a big impact on the outcome of a usability test. Considering the aspects mentioned in this paper will not only save resources but also the trust of the participating patients.

The parallel simulation of Spiking Neural P systems is mainly based on a matrix representation, where the graph inherent to the neural model is encoded in an adjacency matrix. The simulation algorithm is based on a matrix-vector multiplication, which is an operation efficiently implemented on parallel devices. However, when the graph of a Spiking Neural P system is not fully connected, the adjacency matrix is sparse and hence, lots of computing resources are wasted in both time and memory domains. For this reason, two compression methods for the matrix representation were proposed in a previous work, but they were not implemented nor parallelized on a simulator. In this paper, they are implemented and parallelized on GPUs as part of a new Spiking Neural P system with delays simulator. Extensive experiments are conducted on high-end GPUs (RTX2080 and A100 80GB), and it is concluded that they outperform other solutions based on state-of-the-art GPU libraries when simulating Spiking Neural P systems.

Prostate cancer is the second most frequent cancer in men worldwide after lung cancer. Its diagnosis is based on the identification of the Gleason score that evaluates the abnormality of cells in glands through the analysis of the different Gleason patterns within tissue samples. The recent advancements in computational pathology, a domain aiming at developing algorithms to automatically analyze digitized histopathology images, lead to a large variety and availability of datasets and algorithms for Gleason grading and scoring. However, there is no clear consensus on which methods are best suited for each problem in relation to the characteristics of data and labels. This paper provides a systematic comparison on nine datasets with state-of-the-art training approaches for deep neural networks (including fully-supervised learning, weakly-supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, Additive-MIL, Attention-Based MIL, Dual-Stream MIL, TransMIL and CLAM) applied to Gleason grading and scoring tasks. The nine datasets are collected from pathology institutes and openly accessible repositories. Spiking Neural P Systems (SNP) are well-established computing models that take inspiration from spikes between biological neurons; these models have been widely used for both theoretical studies and practical applications. Virus machines (VMs) are an emerging computing paradigm inspired by viral transmission and replication. In this work, a novel extension of VMs inspired by SNPs is presented, called Virus Machines with Host Excitation (VMHEs). In addition, the universality and explicit results between SNPs and VMHEs are compared in both generating and computing mode. The VMHEs defined in this work are shown to be more efficient than SNPs, requiring fewer memory units (hosts in VMHEs and neurons in SNPs) in several tasks, such as a universal machine, which was constructed with 18 hosts less than the 84 neurons in SNPs, and less than other spiking models discussed in the work.

Background: A large language model (LLM) is a machine learning model inferred from text data that captures subtle patterns of language use in context. Modern LLMs are based on neural network architectures that incorporate transformer methods. They allow the model to relate words together through attention to multiple words in a text sequence. LLMs have been shown to be highly effective for a range of tasks in natural language processing (NLP), including classification and information extraction tasks and generative applications., Objective: The aim of this adapted Delphi study was to collect researchers' opinions on how LLMs might influence health care and on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of LLM use in health care., Methods: We invited researchers in the fields of health informatics, nursing informatics, and medical NLP to share their opinions on LLM use in health care. We started the first round with open questions based on our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats framework. In the second and third round, the participants scored these items., Results: The first, second, and third rounds had 28, 23, and 21 participants, respectively. Almost all participants (26/28, 93% in round 1 and 20/21, 95% in round 3) were affiliated with academic institutions. Agreement was reached on 103 items related to use cases, benefits, risks, reliability, adoption aspects, and the future of LLMs in health care. Participants offered several use cases, including supporting clinical tasks, documentation tasks, and medical research and education, and agreed that LLM-based systems will act as health assistants for patient education. The agreed-upon benefits included increased efficiency in data handling and extraction, improved automation of processes, improved quality of health care services and overall health outcomes, provision of personalized care, accelerated diagnosis and treatment processes, and improved interaction between patients and health care professionals. In total, 5 risks to health care in general were identified: cybersecurity breaches, the potential for patient misinformation, ethical concerns, the likelihood of biased decision-making, and the risk associated with inaccurate communication. Overconfidence in LLM-based systems was recognized as a risk to the medical profession. The 6 agreed-upon privacy risks included the use of unregulated cloud services that compromise data security, exposure of sensitive patient data, breaches of confidentiality, fraudulent use of information, vulnerabilities in data storage and communication, and inappropriate access or use of patient data., Conclusions: Future research related to LLMs should not only focus on testing their possibilities for NLP-related tasks but also consider the workflows the models could contribute to and the requirements regarding quality, integration, and regulations needed for successful implementation in practice., (©Kerstin Denecke, Richard May, LLMHealthGroup, Octavio Rivera Romero. Sign language serves as the primary mode of communication for the deaf community. With technological advancements, it is crucial to develop systems capable of enhancing communication between deaf and hearing individuals. This paper reviews recent state-of-the-art methods in sign language recognition, translation, and production. Additionally, we introduce a rule-based system, called ruLSE , for generating synthetic datasets in Spanish Sign Language. To check the usefulness of these datasets, we conduct experiments with two state-of-the-art models based on Transformers, MarianMT and Transformer-STMC. In general, we observe that the former achieves better results (+3.7 points in the BLEU-4 metric) although the latter is up to four times faster. Furthermore, the use of pre-trained word embeddings in Spanish enhances results. The rule-based system demonstrates superior performance and efficiency compared to Transformer models in Sign Language Production tasks. Lastly, we contribute to the state of the art by releasing the generated synthetic dataset in Spanish named synLSE .

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as General Pretrained Transformer (GPT) and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), which use transformer model architectures, have significantly advanced artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Recognized for their ability to capture associative relationships between words based on shared context, these models are poised to transform healthcare by improving diagnostic accuracy, tailoring treatment plans, and predicting patient outcomes. However, there are multiple risks and potentially unintended consequences associated with their use in healthcare applications. This study, conducted with 28 participants using a qualitative approach, explores the benefits, shortcomings, and risks of using transformer models in healthcare. It analyses responses to seven open-ended questions using a simplified thematic analysis. Our research reveals seven benefits, including improved operational efficiency, optimized processes and refined clinical documentation. Despite these benefits, there are significant concerns about the introduction of bias, auditability issues and privacy risks. Challenges include the need for specialized expertise, the emergence of ethical dilemmas and the potential reduction in the human element of patient care. Transformer models have been successfully applied to various natural language processing and machine translation tasks in recent years, e.g. automatic language understanding. With the advent of more efficient and reliable models (e.g. GPT-3), there is a growing potential for automating time-consuming tasks that could be of particular benefit in healthcare to improve clinical outcomes. This paper aims at summarizing potential use cases of transformer models for future healthcare applications. Precisely, we conducted a survey asking experts on their ideas and reflections for future use cases. We received 28 responses, analyzed using an adapted thematic analysis. Overall, 8 use case categories were identified including documentation and clinical coding, workflow and healthcare services, decision support, knowledge management, interaction support, patient education, health management, and public health monitoring. Future research should consider developing and testing the application of transformer models for such use cases.

Background: Health care has evolved to support the involvement of individuals in decision making by, for example, using mobile apps and wearables that may help empower people to actively participate in their treatment and health monitoring. While the term "participatory health informatics" (PHI) has emerged in literature to describe these activities, along with the use of social media for health purposes, the scope of the research field of PHI is not yet well defined., Objective: This article proposes a preliminary definition of PHI and defines the scope of the field., Methods: We used an adapted Delphi study design to gain consensus from participants on a definition developed from a previous review of literature. From the literature we derived a set of attributes describing PHI as comprising 18 characteristics, 14 aims, and 4 relations. We invited researchers, health professionals, and health informaticians to score these characteristics and aims of PHI and their relations to other fields over three survey rounds. In the first round participants were able to offer additional attributes for voting., Results: The first round had 44 participants, with 28 participants participating in all three rounds. These 28 participants were gender-balanced and comprised participants from industry, academia, and health sectors from all continents. Consensus was reached on 16 characteristics, 9 aims, and 6 related fields., Discussion: The consensus reached on attributes of PHI describe PHI as a multidisciplinary field that uses information technology and delivers tools with a focus on individual-centered care. It studies various effects of the use of such tools and technology. Its aims address the individuals in the role of patients, but also the health of a society as a whole. There are relationships to the fields of health informatics, digital health, medical informatics, and consumer health informatics., Conclusion: We have proposed a preliminary definition, aims, and relationships of PHI based on literature and expert consensus. Objective: To identify links between Participatory Health Informatics (PHI) and the One Digital Health framework (ODH) and to show how PHI could be used as a catalyst or contributor to ODH., Methods: We have analyzed the addressed topics within the ODH framework in previous IMIA Yearbook contributions from our working group during the last 10 years. We have matched main themes with the ODH's framework three perspectives (individual health and wellbeing, population and society, and ecosystem)., Results: PHI catalysts ODH individual health and wellbeing perspective by providing a more comprehensive view on human health, attitudes, and relations between human health and animal health. Integration of specific behavior change techniques or gamification strategies in digital solutions are effective to change behaviors which address the P5 paradigm. PHI supports the population and society perspective through the engagement of the various stakeholders in healthcare. At the same time, PHI might increase a risk for health inequities due to technologies inaccessible to all equally and challenges associated with this. PHI is a catalyst for the ecosystem perspective by contributing data into the digital health data ecosystem allowing for analysis of interrelations between the various data which in turn might provide links among all components of the healthcare ecosystem., Conclusion: Our results suggest that PHI can and will involve topics relating to ODH. As the ODH concept crystalizes and becomes increasingly influential, its themes will permeate and become embedded in PHI even more. Background: Among all the cancers known today, prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed in men. With modern advances in medicine, its mortality has been considerably reduced. However, it is still a leading type of cancer in terms of deaths. The diagnosis of prostate cancer is mainly conducted by biopsy test. From this test, Whole Slide Images are obtained, from which pathologists diagnose the cancer according to the Gleason scale. Within this scale from 1 to 5, grade 3 and above is considered malignant tissue. Several studies have shown an inter-observer discrepancy between pathologists in assigning the value of the Gleason scale. Due to the recent advances in artificial intelligence, its application to the computational pathology field with the aim of supporting and providing a second opinion to the professional is of great interest., Method: In this work, the inter-observer variability of a local dataset of 80 whole-slide images annotated by a team of 5 pathologists from the same group was analyzed at both area and label level. Four approaches were followed to train six different Convolutional Neural Network architectures, which were evaluated on the same dataset on which the inter-observer variability was analyzed., Results: An inter-observer variability of 0.6946 κ was obtained, with 46% discrepancy in terms of area size of the annotations performed by the pathologists. Participatory design (PD) is increasingly used to support design and development of digital health solutions. The involves representatives of future user groups and experts to collect their needs and preferences and ensure easy to use and useful solutions. However, reflections and experiences with PD in designing digital health solutions are rarely reported. The objective of this paper is to collect those experiences including lessons learnt and moderator experiences, and to identify challenges. For this purpose, we conducted a multiple case study to explore the skill development process required to successfully design a solution in the three cases. From the results, we derived good practice guidelines to support designing successful PD workshops. They include adapting the workshop activities and material to the vulnerable participant group and considering their environment and previous experiences, planning sufficient time for preparation and supporting the activities with appropriate material. We conclude that PD workshop results are perceived as useful for designing digital health solutions, but careful design is very relevant.

Virus machines are computational devices inspired by the movement of viruses between hosts and their capacity to replicate using the resources of the hosts. This behavior is controlled by an external graph of instructions that opens different channels of the system to make viruses capable of moving. This model of computation has been demonstrated to be as powerful as turing machines by different methods: by generating Diophantine sets, by computing partial recursive functions and by simulating register machines. It is interesting to investigate the practical use cases of this model in terms of possibilities and efficiency. In this work, we give the basic modules to create an arithmetic calculator. As a practical application, two pairing functions are calculated by means of two different virus machines. Pairing functions are important resources in the field of cryptography. The functions calculated are the Cantor pairing function and the Gödel pairing function.

The use of wearable devices has increased substantially in recent years. This, together with the rise of telemedicine, has led to the use of these types of devices in the healthcare field. In this work, we carried out a detailed study on the use of these devices (regarding the general trends); we analyzed the research works and devices marketed in the last 10 years. This analysis extracted relevant information on the general trend of use, as well as more specific aspects, such as the use of sensors, communication technologies, and diseases. A comparison was made between the commercial and research aspects linked to wearables in the healthcare field, and upcoming trends were analyzed.

Computational pathology targets the automatic analysis of Whole Slide Images (WSI). WSIs are high-resolution digitized histopathology images, stained with chemical reagents to highlight specific tissue structures and scanned via whole slide scanners. The application of different parameters during WSI acquisition may lead to stain color heterogeneity, especially considering samples collected from several medical centers. Dealing with stain color heterogeneity often limits the robustness of methods developed to analyze WSIs, in particular Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), the state-of-the-art algorithm for most computational pathology tasks. Stain color heterogeneity is still an unsolved problem, although several methods have been developed to alleviate it, such as Hue-Saturation-Contrast (HSC) color augmentation and stain augmentation methods. The goal of this paper is to present Data-Driven Color Augmentation (DDCA), a method to improve the efficiency of color augmentation methods by increasing the reliability of the samples used for training computational pathology models. During CNN training, a database including over 2 million H&E color variations collected from private and public datasets is used as a reference to discard augmented data with color distributions that do not correspond to realistic data. DDCA is applied to HSC color augmentation, stain augmentation and H&E-adversarial networks in colon and prostate cancer classification tasks. Background: Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate in the world, twice as high as the second highest. On the other hand, pathologists are overworked and this is detrimental to the time spent on each patient, diagnostic turnaround time, and their success rate., Objective: In this work, we design, implement, and evaluate a diagnostic aid system for non-small cell lung cancer detection, using Deep Learning techniques., Methods: The classifier developed is based on Artificial Intelligence techniques, obtaining an automatic classification result between healthy, adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, given an histopathological image from lung tissue. Moreover, a report module based on Explainable Deep Learning techniques is included and gives the pathologist information about the image's areas used to classify the sample and the confidence of belonging to each class., Results: The results show a system accuracy between 97.11 and 99.69%, depending on the number of classes classified, and a value of the area under ROC curve between 99.77 and 99.94%., Conclusions: The classification results obtain a substantial improvement according to previous works. Objective: Social media is used in the context of healthcare, for example in interventions for promoting health. Since social media are easily accessible they have potential to promote health equity. This paper studies relevant factors impacting on health equity considered in social media interventions., Methods: We searched for literature to identify potential relevant factors impacting on health equity considered in social media interventions. We included studies that reported examples of health interventions using social media, focused on health equity, and analyzed health equity factors of social media. We identified Information about health equity factors and targeted groups., Results: We found 17 relevant articles. Factors impacting on health equity reported in the included papers were extracted and grouped into three categories: digital health literacy, digital ethics, and acceptability., Conclusions: Literature shows that it is likely that digital technologies will increase health inequities associated with increased age, lower level of educational attainment, and lower socio-economic status. The human cerebellum plays an important role in coordination tasks. Diseases such as spinocerebellar ataxias tend to cause severe damage to the cerebellum, leading patients to a progressive loss of motor coordination. The detection of such damages can help specialists to approximate the state of the disease, as well as to perform statistical analysis, in order to propose treatment therapies for the patients. Manual segmentation of such patterns from magnetic resonance imaging is a very difficult and time-consuming task, and is not a viable solution if the number of images to process is relatively large. In recent years, deep learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs or convnets) have experienced an increased development, and many researchers have used them to automatically segment medical images. In this research, we propose the use of convolutional neural networks for automatically segmenting the cerebellar fissures from brain magnetic resonance imaging. Three models are presented, based on the same CNN architecture, for obtaining three different binary masks: fissures, cerebellum with fissures, and cerebellum without fissures. The models perform well in terms of precision and efficiency. Evaluation results show that convnets can be trained for such purposes, and could be considered as additional tools in the diagnosis and characterization of neurodegenerative diseases.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancer and one of the leading causes of death among men, with almost 1.41 million new cases and around 375,000 deaths in 2020. Artificial Intelligence algorithms have had a huge impact on medical image analysis, including digital histopathology, where Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are used to provide a fast and accurate diagnosis, supporting experts in this task. To perform an automatic diagnosis, prostate tissue samples are first digitized into gigapixel-resolution whole-slide images. Due to the size of these images, neural networks cannot use them as input and, therefore, small subimages called patches are extracted and predicted, obtaining a patch-level classification. In this work, a novel patch aggregation method based on a custom Wide & Deep neural network model is presented, which performs a slide-level classification using the patch-level classes obtained from a CNN. The malignant tissue ratio, a 10-bin malignant probability histogram, the least squares regression line of the histogram, and the number of malignant connected components are used by the proposed model to perform the classification. An accuracy of 94.24% and a sensitivity of 98.87% were achieved, proving that the proposed system could aid pathologists by speeding up the screening process and, thus, contribute to the fight against PCa., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The change from face-to-face work to teleworking caused by the pandemic has induced multiple workers to spend more time than usual in front of a computer; in addition, the sudden installation of workstations in homes means that not all of them meet the necessary characteristics for the worker to be able to position himself/herself comfortably with the correct posture in front of their computer. Furthermore, from the point of view of the medical personnel in charge of occupational risk prevention, an automated tool able to quantify the degree of incorrectness of a postural habit in a worker is needed. For this purpose, in this work, a system based on the postural detection of the worker is designed, implemented and tested, using a specialized hardware system that processes video in real time through convolutional neural networks. This system is capable of detecting the posture of the neck, shoulders and arms, providing recommendations to the worker in order to prevent possible health problems, due to poor posture. The results of the proposed system show that this video processing can be carried out in real time (up to 25 processed frames/sec) with a low power consumption (less than 10 watts) using specialized hardware, obtaining an accuracy of over 80% in terms of the pattern detected.

The elderly is a continuous growth sector thanks to the life expectancy increase in Western society. This sector is especially at risk from the appearance of respiratory diseases and, therefore, is the most affected sector in the COVID-19 epidemic. Many of these elderly require continuous care in residences or by specialized caregivers, but these personal contacts put this sector at risk. In this work, an IoT system for elderly remote monitoring is studied, designed, developed and tested. This system is composed by a smart garment that records information from various physiological sensors in order to detect falls, sudden changes in body temperature, heart problems and heat stroke; This information is sent to a cloud server through a gateway located in the patient's residence, allowing to real-time monitor remotely patient's activity using a customized App, as well as receiving alerts in dangerous situations. This system has been tested with professional caregivers, obtaining usability and functionality surveys; and, in addition, a detailed power-consumption study has been carried out. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the world's most common neurologic disorders. Social media have been proposed as a way to maintain and even increase social interaction for people with MS. The objective of this work is to identify and compare the topics on Twitter during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Data was collected using the Twitter API between 9/2/2019 and 13/5/2020. SentiStrength was used to analyze data with the day that the pandemic was declared used as a turning point. Frequency-inverse document frequency (tf-idf) was used for each unigram and calculated the gains in tf-idf value. A comparative analysis of the relevance of words and categories among the datasets was performed., Results: The original dataset contained over 610k tweets, our final dataset had 147,963 tweets. After the 10th of march some categories gained relevance in positive tweets ("Healthcare professional", "Chronic conditions", "Condition burden"), while in negative tweets "Emotional aspects" became more relevant and "COVID-19" emerged as a new topic., Conclusions: Our work provides insight on how COVID-19 has changed the online discourse of people with MS.

Monitoring animals' behavior living in wild or semi-wild environments is a very interesting subject for biologists who work with them. The difficulty and cost of implanting electronic devices in this kind of animals suggest that these devices must be robust and have low power consumption to increase their battery life as much as possible. Designing a custom smart device that can detect multiple animal behaviors and that meets the mentioned restrictions presents a major challenge that is addressed in this work. We propose an edge-computing solution, which embeds an ANN in a microcontroller that collects data from an IMU sensor to detect three different horse gaits. All the computation is performed in the microcontroller to reduce the amount of data transmitted via wireless radio, since sending information is one of the most power-consuming tasks in this type of devices. Multiples ANNs were implemented and deployed in different microcontroller architectures in order to find the best balance between energy consumption and computing performance. The results show that the embedded networks obtain up to 97.96% ± 1.42% accuracy, achieving an energy efficiency of 450 Mops/s/watt.

Falls are one of the leading causes of permanent injury and/or disability among the elderly. When these people live alone, it is convenient that a caregiver or family member visits them periodically. However, these visits do not prevent falls when the elderly person is alone. Furthermore, in exceptional circumstances, such as a pandemic, we must avoid unnecessary mobility. This is why remote monitoring systems are currently on the rise, and several commercial solutions can be found. However, current solutions use devices attached to the waist or wrist, causing discomfort in the people who wear them. The users also tend to forget to wear the devices carried in these positions. Therefore, in order to prevent these problems, the main objective of this work is designing and recollecting a new dataset about falls, falling risks and activities of daily living using an ankle-placed device obtaining a good balance between the different activity types. This dataset will be a useful tool for researchers who want to integrate the fall detector in the footwear. Thus, in this work we design the fall-detection device, study the suitable activities to be collected, collect the dataset from 21 users performing the studied activities and evaluate the quality of the collected dataset. As an additional and secondary study, we implement a simple Deep Learning classifier based on this data to prove the system's feasibility.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer among men worldwide, with almost 1.3 million new cases and 360,000 deaths in 2018. As it has been estimated, its mortality will double by 2040, mostly in countries with limited resources. These numbers suggest that recent trends in deep learning-based computer-aided diagnosis could play an important role, serving as screening methods for PCa detection. These algorithms have already been used with histopathological images in many works, in which authors tend to focus on achieving high accuracy results for classifying between malignant and normal cases. These results are commonly obtained by training very deep and complex convolutional neural networks, which require high computing power and resources not only in this process, but also in the inference step. As the number of cases rises in regions with limited resources, reducing prediction time becomes more important. In this work, we measured the performance of current state-of-the-art models for PCa detection with a novel benchmark and compared the results with PROMETEO, a custom architecture that we proposed. The results of the comprehensive comparison show that using dedicated models for specific applications could be of great importance in the future.

Compared to classic robotics, biological nervous systems respond to stimuli in a fast and efficient way regarding the body motor actions. Decision making, once the sensory information arrives to the brain, is in the order of ms, while the whole process from sensing to movement requires tens of ms. Classic robotic systems usually require complex computational abilities. Key differences between biological systems and robotic machines lie in the way information is coded and transmitted. A neuron is the "basic" element that constitutes biological nervous systems. Neurons communicate in an event-driven way through small currents or ionic pulses (spikes). When neurons are arranged in networks, they allow not only for the processing of sensory information, but also for the actuation over the muscles in the same spiking manner. This paper presents the application of a classic motor control model (proportional-integral-derivative) developed with the biological spike processing principle, including the motor actuation with time enlarged spikes instead of the classic pulse-width-modulation. This closed-loop control model, called spike-based PID controller (sPID), was improved and adapted for a dual FPGA-based system to control the four joints of a bioinspired light robot (BioRob X5), called event-driven BioRob (ED-BioRob). The use of spiking signals allowed the system to achieve a current consumption bellow 1A for the entire 4 DoF working at the same time. Furthermore, the robot joints commands can be received from a population of silicon-neurons running on the Dynap-SE platform. Neuromorphic vision sensors detect changes in luminosity taking inspiration from mammalian retina and providing a stream of events with high temporal resolution, also known as Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS). This continuous stream of events can be used to extract spatio-temporal patterns from a scene. A time-surface represents a spatio-temporal context for a given spatial radius around an incoming event from a sensor at a specific time history. Time-surfaces can be organized in a hierarchical way to extract features from input events using the Hierarchy Of Time-Surfaces algorithm, hereinafter HOTS. HOTS can be organized in consecutive layers to extract combination of features in a similar way as some deep-learning algorithms do. This work introduces a novel FPGA architecture for accelerating HOTS network. This architecture is mainly based on block-RAM memory and the non-restoring square root algorithm, requiring basic components and enabling it for low-power low-latency embedded applications. The presented architecture has been tested on a Zynq 7100 platform at 100 MHz. The results show that the latencies are in the range of 1 μ s to 6.7 μ s, requiring a maximum dynamic power consumption of 77 mW. This system was tested with a gesture recognition dataset, obtaining an accuracy loss for 16-bit precision of only 1.2% with respect to the original software HOTS.
