1. Three-component multiplicity distribution, oscillation of combinants and properties of clans in pp collisions at the LHC

Abstract: Abstract Multiplicity distributions of charged particles measured by the ATLAS Collaboration in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ s=8 and 13 TeV are analyzed in the framework of a weighted superposition of three negative binomial distribution functions. The examination of the experimental data confirms the existence of a narrow peak at low multiplicities found earlier at $$\sqrt{s}=0.9$$ s=0.9 and 7 TeV. The peak is described by the third separate component of the total distribution. The energy dependence of the multiplicity characteristics of the three-component scenario is studied. It is demonstrated that the third multiplicity component might be responsible for oscillations of combinants observed lately in the analysis of the multiplicity distributions measured in proton–proton collisions at the LHC. Some consequences of the three-component description of the data for the clan parameters are analyzed.

Abstract: Results of a new analysis of negative particle yields in Au + Au collisions obtained by the STAR Collaboration in the first phase of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program in the framework of $$z$$ -scaling approach are presented. The spectra were measured over a wide range of collision energy $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} = 7.7 - 200$$ GeV and transverse momentum of produced particles for different centralities at $$\left| \eta \right| < 0.5.$$ The concept of the $$z$$ -scaling based on self-similarity, locality, and fractality of hadron interactions at a constituent level is verified. The constituent energy loss as a function of energy and centrality of collision and transverse momentum of inclusive particle was estimated.

Abstract: $z$-Scaling of inclusive spectra as a manifestation of self-similarity and fractality of hadron interactions is illustrated. The scaling for negative particle production in $Au+Au$ collisions from BES-I program at RHIC is demonstrated. The scaling variable $z$ depends on the momentum fractions of the colliding objects carried by the interacting constituents, and on the momentum fractions of the fragmenting objects in the scattered and recoil directions carried by the inclusive particle and its counterpart, respectively. Structures of the colliding objects and fragmentation processes in final state are expressed by fractal dimensions. Medium produced in the collisions is described by a specific heat. The scaling function $\psi(z)$ reveals energy, angular, multiplicity, and flavor independence. It has a power behavior at high $z$ (high $p_T$). Based on the entropy principle and $z$-scaling, energy loss as a function of the collision energy, centrality and transverse momentum of inclusive particle is estimated. New conservation law including fractal dimensions is found. 6. Top-quark p T -spectra at CMS and flavor independence of z-scaling

Abstract: We present new results of analysis of top-quark differential cross sections obtained by the CMS Collaboration in pp collisions in the framework of the z-scaling approach. The spectra are measured over a wide range of collision energy $$\sqrt s = 7,8,13TeV$$ and transverse momentum p T = 30−500 GeV/c of top-quark using leptonic and jet decay modes. Flavor independence of the scaling function ψ(z) is verified in the new kinematic range. The results of analysis of the top-quark spectra obtained at the LHC are compared with similar spectra measured in $$\overline p p$$ collisions at the Tevatron energy $$\sqrt s = 1.96TeV$$ . A tendency to saturation of ψ(z) for the process at low z and a power-law behavior of ψ(z) at high z is observed. The measurements of high-p T is observed. The measurements of highspectra of the top-quark production at highest LHC energy is of interest for verification of self-similarity of particle production, understanding flavor origin and search for new physics symmetries with top-quark probe.

Abstract: We present results of analysis of negative particle spectra in A u + A u collisions obtained by the STAR Collaboration in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC using the z-scaling approach. The spectra were measured over a wide range of collision energy s N N = 7.7 –200 GeV and transverse momentum of produced particles for different centralities in the pseudo-rapidity range | η | 0.5 . A scaling behavior of the spectra as a function of the collision energy and centrality in z-presentation is observed. The concept of the z-scaling based on fundamental principles of self-similarity, locality, and fractality of hadron interactions at high energies is considered. The energy loss as a function of the energy and centrality of the collision and the transverse momentum of inclusive particle is estimated. New indication on self-similarity of fractal structure of nuclei and fragmentation processes with negative particles produced in A u + A u collisions at RHIC is found.

Abstract: We briefly review z-scaling as a reflection of the self-similarity of hadron production in high-energy hadron and nuclear collisions and discuss the basic principles of constituent interactions (locality, self-similarity, and fractality). We present results of analyzing experimental data on the inclusive pT spectra of hadron and jet production at the RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC in the framework of z-scaling.

Abstract: Self-similarity of jet production in polarized p + p collisions is studied. The concept of z-scaling is applied for description of proton spin. New data on the double longitudinal spin asymmetry, ALL, of inclusive jets produced in proton-proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV measured by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC are analyzed in the framework of z-scaling approach. A hypothesis of self-similarity and fractality of the proton spin structure are formulated. A possibility to extract information on spin-dependent fractal dimensions of proton from the asymmetry of jet production is justified. The spin-dependent fractal dimension of proton in process $\vec p + \vec p \to jet + X$ is estimated.

Abstract: Search for signatures of phase transition in Au + Au collisions is in the heart of the heavy ion program at RHIC. Systematic study of particle production over a wide range of collision energy revealed new phenomena such as the nuclear suppression effect expressed by nuclear modification factor, the constituent quark number scaling for elliptic flow, the “ridge effect” in Δϕ-Δη fluctuations etc. To determine the phase boundaries and location of the critical point of nuclear matter the Beam Energy Scan (BES-I) program at RHIC has been suggested and performed by STAR and PHENIX Collaborations. The obtained results shown that the program (BES-II) should be continued. In this paper a proposal to use hard cumulative processes in BES Phase-II program is outlined. Selection of the cumulative events is assumed to enrich data sample by new type of collisions characterized by higher energy density and more compressed matter. This would allow finding clearer signatures of phase transition, location of a critical point and studying extreme conditions in heavy ion collisions.

Abstract: Experimental data on inclusive spectra measured in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and SPS over a wide range of the energy $\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 9 - 200$ GeV are analyzed in the framework of z scaling. A microscopic scenario of constituent interactions in the framework of this approach is discussed. Dependence of the energy loss on the momentum of the produced hadron, energy, and centrality of the collision, is studied. Self-similarity of the constituent interactions in terms of momentum fractions is used to characterize the nuclear medium by “specific heat” and colliding nuclei by fractal dimensions. Preferable kinematical regions for search for signatures of the phase transition of the nuclearmatter produced inHIC are discussed. Discontinuity of “specific heat” is assumed to be a signature of the phase transition and the Critical Point.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of analysis of the D? 1.0 fb-1 data on top-quark differential cross section measurements at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at √s= 1960 GeV in the framework of z-scaling approach. The flavor independence of scaling function Ψ(z)observed in pp and pp interactions over a wide collision energy range √s= 19-1960 GeV has been verified. This property of Ψ(z) was found for different hadrons – from π-mesons up to Υ particles. The flavor independence of Ψ(z) is used as indication on self-similarity of the top-quark production. A tendency to saturation of Ψ(z) at low z for top-quark production has been confirmed. Momentum fraction x1 of the incoming (anti)protons as a function of the scaled transverse momentum pT/m and masses of heavy mesons is studied. We anticipate that the data on low- and high-pT inclusive spectra of the top-quark production at the Tevatron and LHC energies could be of interest to verify self-similarity over a wide range of masses and different flavor content of produced particles.

Abstract: The hypothesis of the self-similarity of hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions to search for the phase transition in nuclear matter is discussed. Using the established features of z-scaling is suggested to reveal the signatures of new physics in the cumulative region. It is noted that selecting events on centrality in the cumulative region could help localize the position of a critical point. The change in the parameters of the theory (a specific heat and fractal dimensions) near the critical point is considered a signature of new physics. The relationship between the power asymptotic of Ψ(z) at high values of the similarity parameter z, the anisotropy of momentum space due to spontaneous symmetry breaking, and discrete (C, P, T) symmetries is emphasized.

Abstract: Fractal self-similarity of hadron interactions demonstrated by the [Formula: see text]-scaling of inclusive spectra is studied. The scaling regularity reflects fractal structure of the colliding hadrons (or nuclei) and takes into account general features of fragmentation processes expressed by fractal dimensions. The self-similarity variable [Formula: see text] is a function of the momentum fractions [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of the colliding objects carried by the interacting hadron constituents and depends on the momentum fractions [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of the scattered and recoil constituents carried by the inclusive particle and its recoil counterpart, respectively. Based on entropy principle, new properties of the [Formula: see text]-scaling concept are found. They are conservation of fractal cumulativity in hadron interactions and quantization of fractal dimensions characterizing hadron structure and fragmentation processes at a constituent level.

Abstract: Results of analysis of experimental data on inclusive spectra of charged hadrons produced in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC are shown in z presentation. The data indicate similarity as a characteristic feature of mechanism of hadron production at high energies. It is argued that this property includes structure of the colliding objects, interaction of their constituents, and character of the fragmentation process. Relation of the scaling variable z with the entropy and “specific heat” of the interacting system is discussed. A microscopic scenario of the constituent interactions connected with the momentum distribution of hadrons in the final state is suggested. We estimate energy losses of particles in the produced matter characterized by the multiplicity density dN ch/dη.

Abstract: The multiplicity dependence of inclusive spectra of identified hadrons (π, K, $\bar p$, KS0, and Λ) produced in high-energy $\bar p$p and pp collisions is studied. Analysis of experimental data on high-pT hadron cross sections obtained at the Tevatron and RHIC is performed in the framework of z scaling. Independence of the scaling function ψ(z) on the multiplicity density dNch/dη is established. The multiplicity density measured in nucleon-nucleon collisions reaches much higher values than the corresponding quantity [1/(0.5Np)]dNch/dη obtained in heavy-ion collisions. Its influence on particle production reveals properties of self-similarity and fractality. The relation between the scaling variable z and thermodynamic quantities (“heat capacity” and “temperature”) of the medium associated with the produced inclusive particle is discussed. Search for z-scaling violation in $\bar p$p and pp collisions at very high multiplicities as an indication of new-physics phenomena is suggested.

Abstract: An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

Abstract: Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of Λ / Λ =0.71±0.01( stat. )±0.04( sys. ) , Ξ + / Ξ − =0.83±0.04( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) , Ω + / Ω − =0.95±0.15( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) and K + /K − =1.092±0.023(combined) were obtained in central s NN =130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over antihyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar to that observed in heavy-ion collisions at lower energies. The value of these ratios may be related to the charged kaon ratio in the framework of simple quark-counting and thermal models.

Abstract: The STAR detector has made a variety of measurements of strange and other hadronic species in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV. A comparison of kaon and pion production enables an examination of the systematics of strangeness production with energy by comparing them to lower energy collisions. Anti-baryon to baryon ratios indicate a much reduced net-baryon density and transverse momentum spectra show that a picture of transverse expansion seems appropriate.

Abstract: Experimental data on transverse momentum spectra of strange particles [Formula: see text] produced in [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] obtained by the STAR and PHENIX collaborations at RHIC are analyzed in the framework of [Formula: see text]-scaling approach. The concept of the [Formula: see text]-scaling is based on fundamental principles of self-similarity, locality, and fractality of hadron interactions at high energies. General properties of the data [Formula: see text]-presentation are studied. Self-similarity of fractal structure of protons and fragmentation processes with strange particles is discussed. A microscopic scenario of constituent interactions developed within the [Formula: see text]-scaling scheme is used to study the dependence of momentum fractions and recoil mass on the collision energy, transverse momentum and mass of produced inclusive particle, and to estimate the constituent energy loss. We consider that obtained results can be useful in study of strangeness origin, in searching for new physics with strange probes, and can serve for better understanding of fractality of hadron interactions at small scales.

Abstract: The A-dependence of z-scaling in inclusive hadron production in pA collisions at high transverse momenta is studied. The concept of z-scaling based on the fundamental principles of Nature such as self-similarity, locality, scale relativity and fractality reflecting the general features of particle interactions is applied for the description of processes of hadron production in pA collisions. The scaling function ψ is expressed via the invariant cross-section Ed3σ/dq3 and the average multiplicity density dN/dη of particles produced at pseudorapidity η=0 in the corresponding nucleon–nucleon interaction. The independence of the function ψ(z) on the center-of-mass energy [Formula: see text] for particle production near 90° in the NN c.m. system for different nuclei from D up to Pb is shown. The scale transformation z→az, ψ→a-1ψ is used to determine the A-dependence of the transformation parameter a. Based on the properties of z-scaling the dependence of the cross-sections for the π±, K±, and [Formula: see text] hadrons produced in pA collisions on transverse momentum q⊥ in the central region (η=0) at RHIC energies is predicted.

Abstract: New scaling, z scaling, in the inclusive particle production in pA collisions is studied. The scaling function H-A(z) is expressed via the invariant cross section Ed(3)sigma/dq(3) and the average multiplicity density dN/d eta of particles produced at pseudorapidity eta=0 in the corresponding nucleon-nucleon interaction. The dependence of H-A(z) on scaling variable z, the center-of-mass energy root s and the atomic number A is investigated. It is shown that the available experimental data on cross sections in pA collisions confirm the scaling properties of the function H-A(z). The obtained results can be of interest for future experiments at BNL relativistic heavy-ion collider and CERN large hadron collider in searching for new physical phenomena in pp, pA, and AA collisions. Abstract: We present the first large-acceptance measurement of event-wise mean transverse momentum fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-momentum collision energy root s(NN) = 130 GeV. The observed nonstatistical fluctuations substantially exceed in magnitude fluctuations expected from the finite number of particles produced in a typical collision. The r.m.s. fractional width excess of the event-wise distribution is 13.7 +/- 0.1(stat) +/- 1.3(syst)% relative to a statistical reference, for the 15% most-central collisions and for charged hadrons within pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar fluctuation excess is qualitatively larger than those observed at lower energies and differs markedly from theoretical expectations. Contributions to fluctuations from semihard parton scattering in the initial state and dissipation in the bulk colored medium are discussed.

Abstract: We report inclusive photon measurements about midrapidity (\y\ gammagamma decay channel. The fractional contribution of the pi(0)-->gammagamma decay to the inclusive photon spectrum decreases by 20%+/-5% between p(t)=1.65 GeV/c and p(t)=2.4 GeV/c in the most central events, indicating that relative to pi(0)-->gammagamma decay the contribution of other photon sources is substantially increasing.

Abstract: We report on the rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and anti-proton transverse mass distributions from {sup 197}Au + {sup 197}Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 130 GeV as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Our results are from the rapidity and transverse momentum range of |y| < 0.5 and 0.35 < p{sub t} < 1.00 GeV/c. For both protons and anti-protons, transverse mass distributions become more convex from peripheral to central collisions demonstrating characteristics of collective expansion. The measured rapidity distributions and the mean transverse momenta versus rapidity are flat within |y| < 0.5. Comparisons of our data with results from model calculations indicate that in order to obtain a consistent picture of the proton(anti-proton) yields and transverse mass distributions the possibility of pre-hadronic collective expansion may have to be taken into account.

Abstract: We present STAR measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v{sub 2} and the binary-collision scaled centrality ratio R{sub CP} for kaons and lambdas ({Lambda} + {bar {Lambda}}) at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 200 GeV. In combination, the v{sub 2} and R{sub CP} particle-type dependencies contradict expectations from partonic energy loss followed by standard fragmentation in vacuum. We establish p{sub T} {approx} 5 GeV/c as the value where the centrality dependent baryon enhancement ends. The K{sub S}{sup 0} and {Lambda} + {bar {Lambda}} v{sub 2} values are consistent with expectations of constituent-quark-number scaling from models of hadron formation by parton coalescence or recombination.

Abstract: We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v(1)) and the fourth harmonic (v(4)), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large elliptic flow (v(2)) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v(2) with v(1) it is determined that v(2) is positive, or in-plane. The integrated v(4) is about a factor of 10 smaller than v(2). For the sixth (v(6)) and eighth (v(8)) harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.

Abstract: Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi(0) mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x(F) below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x(F), similar to the trend in data at sqrt[s]or =20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p(T)1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider.

Abstract: We present the results of charged particle fluctuations measurements in Au+Au collisions at rootS(NN)=130 GeV using the STAR detector. Dynamical fluctuations measurements are presented for inclusive charged particle multiplicities as well as for identified charged pions, kaons, and protons. The net charge dynamical fluctuations are found to be large and negative providing clear evidence that positive and negative charged p article production is correlated within the pseudorapidity range investigated. Correlations are smaller than expected based on model-dependent predictions for a resonance gas or a quark-gluon gas which undergoes fast hadronization and freeze-out. Qualitative agreement is found with comparable scaled p+p measurements and a heavy ion jet interaction generation model calculation based on independent particle collisions, although a small deviation from the 1/N scaling dependence expected from this model is observed.

Abstract: Transverse mass and rapidity distributions for charged pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons are reported for square root of [sNN]=200 GeV pp and Au+Au collisions at Relativistic Heary Ion Collider (RHIC). Chemical and kinetic equilibrium model fits to our data reveal strong radial flow and long duration from chemical to kinetic freeze-out in central Au+Au collisions. The chemical freeze-out temperature appears to be independent of initial conditions at RHIC energies.

Abstract: We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.

Abstract: Pion-kaon correlation functions are constructed from central Au+Au STAR data taken at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The results suggest that pions and kaons are not emitted at the same average space-time point. Space-momentum correlations, i.e., transverse flow, lead to a space-time emission asymmetry of pions and kaons that is consistent with the data. This result provides new independent evidence that the system created at RHIC undergoes a collective transverse expansion.

Abstract: We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.

Abstract: The balance function is a new observable based on the principle that charge is locally conserved when particles are pair produced. Balance functions have been measured for charged particle pairs and identified charged pion pairs in Au + Au collisions at √(sNN) = 130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using STAR. Balance functions for peripheral collisions have widths consistent with model predictions based on a superposition of nucleon-nucleon scattering. Widths in central collisions are smaller, consistent with trends predicted by models incorporating late hadronization.

Abstract: Azimuthal correlations for large transverse momentum charged hadrons have been measured over a wide pseudorapidity range and full azimuth in Au+Au and p+p collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV. The small-angle correlations observed in p+p collisions and at all centralities of Au+Au collisions are characteristic of hard-scattering processes previously observed in high-energy collisions. A strong back-to-back correlation exists for p+p and peripheral Au+Au. In contrast, the back-to-back correlations are reduced considerably in the most central Au+Au collisions, indicating substantial interaction as the hard-scattered partons or their fragmentation products traverse the medium.

Abstract: The balance function is a new observable based on the principle that charge is locally conserved when particles are pair produced. Balance functions have been measured for charged particle pairs and identified charged pion pairs in Au+Au collisions at the square root of SNN = 130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using STAR. Balance functions for peripheral collisions have widths consistent with model predictions based on a superposition of nucleon-nucleon scattering. Widths in central collisions are smaller, consistent with trends predicted by models incorporating late hadronization.

Abstract: We report high statistics measurements of inclusive charged hadron production in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. A large, approximately constant hadron suppression is observed in central Au+Au collisions for 5p(T)12 GeV/c. The collision energy dependence of the yields and the centrality and p(T) dependence of the suppression provide stringent constraints on theoretical models of suppression. Models incorporating initial-state gluon saturation or partonic energy loss in dense matter are largely consistent with observations. We observe no evidence of p(T)-dependent suppression, which may be expected from models incorporating jet attenuation in cold nuclear matter or scattering of fragmentation hadrons.

Abstract: Data from the first physics run at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130$ GeV, have been analyzed by the STAR Collaboration using three-pion correlations with charged pions to study whether pions are emitted independently at freezeout. We have made a high-statistics measurement of the three-pion correlation function and calculated the normalized three-particle correlator to obtain a quantitative measurement of the degree of chaoticity of the pion source.
