Wigner functions, allowing for a reformulation of quantum mechanics in phase space, are of central importance for the study of the quantum-classical transition. A full understanding of the quantum-classical transition, however, also requires an explanation for the absence of macroscopic superpositions to solve the quantum measurement problem. Stochastic reformulations of quantum mechanics based on spontaneous collapses of the wavefunction are a popular approach to this issue. In this article, we derive the dynamic equations for the four most important spontaneous collapse models - Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) theory, continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model, Di\'osi-Penrose model, and dissipative GRW model - in the Wigner framework. The resulting master equations are approximated by Fokker-Planck equations. Moreover, we use the phase-space form of GRW theory to test, via molecular dynamics simulations, David Albert's suggestion that the stochasticity induced by spontaneous collapses is responsible for the emergence of thermodynamic irreversibility. The simulations show that, for initial conditions leading to anti-thermodynamic behavior in the classical case, GRW-type perturbations do not lead to thermodynamic behavior. While biological crystallization processes have been studied on the microscale extensively, there is a general lack of models addressing the mesoscale aspects of such phenomena. In this work, we investigate whether the phase-field theory developed in materials’ science for describing complex polycrystalline structures on the mesoscale can be meaningfully adapted to model crystallization in biological systems. We demonstrate the abilities of the phase-field technique by modeling a range of microstructures observed in mollusk shells and coral skeletons, including granular, prismatic, sheet/columnar nacre, and sprinkled spherulitic structures. We also compare two possible micromechanisms of calcification: the classical route, via ion-by-ion addition from a fluid state, and a nonclassical route, crystallization of an amorphous precursor deposited at the solidification front. We show that with an appropriate choice of the model parameters, microstructures similar to those found in biomineralized systems can be obtained along both routes, though the time-scale of the nonclassical route appears to be more realistic. The resemblance of the simulated and natural biominerals suggests that, underneath the immense biological complexity observed in living organisms, the underlying design principles for biological structures may be understood with simple math and simulated by phase-field theory.

We investigate bulk thermodynamic and microscopic structural properties of amorphous solids in the framework of the phase-field crystal (PFC) model. These are metastable states with a non-uniform density distribution having no long-range order. From extensive numerical simulations we determine the distribution of free energy density values in varying size amorphous systems and also the point-to-set correlation length, which is the radius of the largest volume of amorphous one can take while still having the particle arrangements within the volume determined by the particle ordering at the surface of the chosen volume. We find that in the thermodynamic limit, the free energy density of the amorphous tends to a value that has a slight dependence on the initial state from which it was formed -- i.e.\ it has a formation history dependence. The amorphous phase is observed to form on both sides of the liquid linear-stability limit, showing that the liquid to amorphous transition is first order, with an associated finite free energy barrier when the liquid is metastable. In our simulations this is demonstrated when noise in the initial density distribution is used to induce nucleation events from the metastable liquid. Depending on the strength of the initial noise, we observe a variety of nucleation pathways, in agreement with previous results for the PFC model, and which show that amorphous precursor mediated multi-step crystal nucleation can occur in colloidal systems., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures

The paper examines the participation of the Hungarian regions in the European Union cross-border cooperation within the framework of the INTERREG flagship co-financing programmes and the macro-regional strategies for the cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation. The study was based on raw data and their analytical compilations from the database keep.eu. The study concludes that, in the context of global transformations, border areas should be subject to supranational and national regional policies implemented by programme instruments, a proactive mechanism of their use for the harmonious socio-economic development of a country or a group of countries.

In this paper, the emergence of macroscopic-scale pseudo time-irreversibility is studied in the closed classical many-body system of pair interacting particles. First, exact continuum equations are derived to the Hamiltonian dynamics without the utilisation of statistical mechanics. Next, it is shown that the momentum density field incorporates the thermal degrees of freedom in the considered scaling limit, and therefore initial condition indicated pseudo time-irreversible solutions may exist to the dynamical equations. Numerical evidence for pseudo-irreversible thermal equilibration, heat and momentum transport is provided. Finally, the possible reasons of the numerically obtained non-diffusional relaxation of macroscopic order is discussed.

We develop a dynamical density functional theory based model for the drying of colloidal films on planar surfaces. We consider mixtures of two different sizes of hard-sphere colloids. Depending on the solvent evaporation rate and the initial concentrations of the two species, we observe varying degrees of stratification in the final dried films. Our model predicts the various structures described in the literature previously from experiments and computer simulations, in particular the small-on-top stratified films. Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 4 (TRPM4) is a Ca2+-activated nonselective cation channel that mediates membrane depolarization. Although, a current with the hallmarks of a TRPM4-mediated current has been previously reported in pancreatic acinar cells (PACs), the role of TRPM4 in the regulation of acinar cell function has not yet been explored. In the present study, we identify this TRPM4 current and describe its role in context of Ca2+ signaling of PACs using pharmacological tools and TRPM4-deficient mice. We found a significant Ca2+-activated cation current in PACs that was sensitive to the TRPM4 inhibitors 9-phenanthrol and 4-chloro-2-[[2-(2-chlorophenoxy)acetyl]amino]benzoic acid (CBA). We demonstrated that the CBA-sensitive current was responsible for a Ca2+-dependent depolarization of PACs from a resting membrane potential of −44.4 ± 2.9 to −27.7 ± 3 mV. Furthermore, we showed that Ca2+ influx was higher in the TRPM4 KO- and CBA-treated PACs than in control cells. As hormone-induced repetitive Ca2+ transients partially rely on Ca2+ influx in PACs, the role of TRPM4 was also assessed on Ca2+ oscillations elicited by physiologically relevant concentrations of the cholecystokinin analog cerulein. These data show that the amplitude of Ca2+ signals was significantly higher in TRPM4 KO than in control PACs. Our results suggest that PACs are depolarized by TRPM4 currents to an extent that results in a significant reduction of the inward driving force for Ca2+. In conclusion, TRPM4 links intracellular Ca2+ signaling to membrane potential as a negative feedback regulator of Ca2+ entry in PACs.

Background: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on European gynaecological cancer patients under active treatment or follow-up has not been documented. We sought to capture the patient perceptions of the COVID-19 implications and the worldwide imposed treatment modifications. Methods: A patient survey was conducted in 16 European countries, using a new COVID-19-related questionnaire, developed by ENGAGe and the Hospital Anxiety & Depression Scale questionnaire (HADS). The survey was promoted by national patient advocacy groups and charitable organisations. Findings: We collected 1388 forms; 592 online and 796 hard-copy (May, 2020). We excluded 137 due to missing data. Median patients’ age was 55 years (range: 18–89), 54.7% had ovarian cancer and 15.5% were preoperative. Even though 73.2% of patients named cancer as a risk factor for COVID-19, only 17.5% were more afraid of COVID-19 than their cancer condition, with advanced age (>70 years) as the only significant risk factor for that. Overall, 71% were concerned about cancer progression if their treatment/follow-up was cancelled/postponed. Most patients (64%) had their care continued as planned, but 72.3% (n = 892) said that they received no information around overall COVID-19 infection rates of patients and staff, testing or measures taken in their treating hospital. Mean HADS Anxiety and Depression Scores were 8.8 (range: 5.3–12) and 8.1 (range: 3.8–13.4), respectively. Multivariate analysis identified high HADS-depression scores, having experienced modifications of care due to the pandemic and concern about not being able to visit their doctor as independent predictors of patients’ anxiety. Interpretation: Gynaecological cancer patients expressed significant anxiety about progression of their disease due to modifications of care related to the COVID-19 pandemic and wished to pursue their treatment as planned despite the associated risks. Healthcare professionals should take this into consideration when making decisions that impact patients care in times of crisis and to develop initiatives to improve patients’ communication and education. © 2020 The Authors. In this paper the development of a physically consistent phase-field theory of solidification shrinkage is presented. The coarse-grained hydrodynamic equations are derived directly from the N-body Hamiltonian equations in the framework of statistical physics, while the constitutive relations are developed in the framework of the standard Phase-field Theory, by following the variational formalism and the principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. To enhance the numerical practicality of the model, quasi-incompressible hydrodynamic equations are derived, where sound waves are absent (but density change is still possible), and therefore the time scale of solidification is accessible in numerical simulations. The model development is followed by a comprehensive mathematical analysis of the equilibrium and propagating 1-dimensional solid-liquid interfaces for different density-phase couplings. It is shown, that the fluid flow decelerates/accelerates the solidification front in case of shrinkage/expansion of the solid compared to the case when no density contrast is present between the phases. Furthermore, such a free energy construction is proposed, in which the equilibrium planar phase-field interface is independent from the density-phase coupling, and the equilibrium interface represents an exact propagating planar interface solution of the quasi-incompressible hydrodynamic equations. A simple phase-field model is used to address anisotropic eutectic freezing on the nanoscale in two (2D) and three dimensions (3D). Comparing parameter-free simulations with experiments, it is demonstrated that the employed model can be made quantitative for Ag–Cu. Next, we explore the effect of material properties and the conditions of freezing on the eutectic pattern. We find that the anisotropies of kinetic coefficient and the interfacial free energies (solid–liquid and solid–solid), the crystal misorientation relative to pulling, the lateral temperature gradient play essential roles in determining the eutectic pattern. Finally, we explore eutectic morphologies, which form when one of the solid phases are faceted, and investigate cases, in which the kinetic anisotropy for the two solid phases is drastically different.

In this paper, we use a phenomenological continuum theory of the Ginzburg–Landau type to address emulsion formation in water/light hydrocarbon/asphaltene systems. On the basis of the results of recent molecular dynamics simulations, we first calibrate the model parameters and show that the theory produces a reasonable equation of state. Next, the coalescence of oil droplets is studied by convection–diffusion dynamics as a function of both the surface coverage and the viscosity contrast between the asphaltene and the bulk liquids. We show that, besides the traditional thermodynamic interpretation of emulsion formation, the time scale of drop coalescence can be controlled independently from the interfacial tension drop, which offers an alternative, solely kinetic driven mechanism of emulsion formation.

We compare two versions of the phase-field theory for polycrystalline solidification, both relying on the concept of orientation fields: one by Kobayashi et al. [Physica D 140 (2000) 141] [15] and the other by Henry et al. [Phys. Rev. B 86 (2012) 054117] [22]. Setting the model parameters so that the grain boundary energies and the time scale of grain growth are comparable in the two models, we first study the grain coarsening process including the limiting grain size distribution, and compare the results to those from experiments on thin films, to the models of Hillert, and Mullins, and to predictions by multiphase-field theories. Next, following earlier work by Granasy et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 (2002) 206105; Phys. Rev. E 72 (2005) 011605] [17,21], we extend the orientation field to the liquid state, where the orientation field is made to fluctuate in time and space, and employ the model for describing of multi-dendritic solidification, and polycrystalline growth, including the formation of “dizzy” dendrites disordered via the interaction with foreign particles.

We review recent advances made in modeling heteroepitaxy, two-step nucleation, and nucleation at the growth front within the framework of a simple dynamical density functional theory, the Phase-Field Crystal (PFC) model. The crystalline substrate is represented by spatially confined periodic potentials. We investigate the misfit dependence of the critical thickness in the StranskiKrastanov growth mode in isothermal studies. Apparently, the simulation results for stress release via the misfit dislocations fit better to the PeopleBean model than to the one by Matthews and Blakeslee. Next, we investigate structural aspects of two-step crystal nucleation at high undercoolings, where an amorphous precursor forms in the first stage. Finally, we present results for the formation of new grains at the solid–liquid interface at high supersaturations/supercoolings, a phenomenon termed Growth Front Nucleation (GFN). Results obtained with diffusive dynamics (applicable to colloids) and with a hydrodynamic extension of the PFC theory (HPFC, developed for simple liquids) will be compared. The HPFC simulations indicate two possible mechanisms for GFN.

We review how phase-field models contributed to the understanding of various aspects of crystal nucleation including homogeneous and heterogeneous processes, and their role in microstructure evolution. We recall results obtained both by the conventional phase-field approaches that rely on spatially averaged (coarse grained) order parameters in capturing freezing, and by the recently developed phase-field crystal models that work on the molecular scale, while employing time averaged particle densities, and are regarded as simple dynamical density functional theories of classical particles. Besides simpler cases of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, phenomena addressed by these techniques include precursor assisted nucleation, nucleation in eutectic and phase separating systems, phase selection via competing nucleation processes, growth front nucleation (a process, in which grains of new orientations form at the solidification front) yielding crystal sheaves and spherulites, and transition between the growth controlled cellular and the nucleation dominated equiaxial solidification morphologies., Open Access Article: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0079642519300453

Article level scientometric indicators (ALMs) are usually of cumulative nature making articles of different age hard to compare. Here, we introduce a new ALM, the Time Debiased Significance Score (TDSS), which measures the significance of a publication based on the structure of the whole citation network and eliminates the global ageing bias in the network: older publications should not be a priori privileged or disadvantaged compared to newer ones. The TDSS is based on a modified variant of the PageRank measure, incorporating a mathematically consistent temporal detrending and ensuring a few key features: (i) the TDSS should not show any global trend as a function of the topological index (causal order in the citation network); (ii) the TDSS value of a publication should decrease as time passes (and the citation network grows) if no more citations are associated with it. The above definition is beneficial in multiple ways, including e.g. low computational complexity and weak domain dependence. Further, estimation of reliability of the TDSS and its extension to groups of items like overall score of a research group are also possible.

Crystallization of supersaturated liquids usually starts by epitaxial growth or by heterogeneous nucleation on foreign surfaces. Herein, we review recent advances made in modeling heteroepitaxy and heterogeneous nucleation on flat/modulated surfaces and nanoparticles within the framework of a simple dynamical density functional theory, known as the phase-field crystal model. It will be shown that the contact angle and the nucleation barrier are nonmonotonous functions of the lattice mismatch between the substrate and the crystalline phase. In continuous cooling studies for substrates with lattice mismatch, we recover qualitatively the Matthews–Blakeslee mechanism of stress release via the misfit dislocations. The simulations performed for particle-induced freezing will be confronted with recent analytical results, exploring thus the validity range of the latter. It will be demonstrated that time-dependent studies are essential, as investigations based on equilibrium properties often cannot identify the preferred nucleation pathways. Modeling of these phenomena is essential for designing materials on the basis of controlled nucleation and/or nano-patterning.

The Euler-Lagrange equation of the phase-field crystal (PFC) model has been solved under appropriate boundary conditions to obtain the equilibrium free energy of the body centered cubic crystal-liquid interface for 18 orientations at various reduced temperatures in the range $\epsilon\in\left[0,0.5\right]$. While the maximum free energy corresponds to the $\left\{ 100\right\} $ orientation for all $\epsilon$ values, the minimum is realized by the $\left\{ 111\right\} $ direction for small $\epsilon\,(

Advances in the orientation-field-based phase-field (PF) models made in the past are reviewed. The models applied incorporate homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of growth centers and several mechanisms to form new grains at the perimeter of growing crystals, a phenomenon termed growth front nucleation. Examples for PF modeling of such complex polycrystalline structures are shown as impinging symmetric dendrites, polycrystalline growth forms (ranging from disordered dendrites to spherulitic patterns), and various eutectic structures, including spiraling two-phase dendrites. Simulations exploring possible control of solidification patterns in thin films via external fields, confined geometry, particle additives, scratching/piercing the films, etc. are also displayed. Advantages, problems, and possible solutions associated with quantitative PF simulations are discussed briefly.

Recent studies indicate that murine Tregs highly express the ENTDP1, as well as the 5′-NT and thereby, suppress Teff function by extracellular adenosine production. Furthermore, CD73 seems to play a role as costimulatory molecule for T cell differentiation. In this study, we analyzed the expression of CD73 on peripheral and lymph nodal Teffs and Tregs in a cohort of 95 HIV patients at different stages of disease, including LTNP and ECs. In contrast to murine Tregs, CD73 was only expressed on a small minority (∼10%) of peripheral Tregs. In contrast, we see high expression of CD73 on peripheral CD8+ T cells. In HIV infection, CD73 is markedly reduced on all Teffs and Tregs, regardless of the memory subtype. On CD8+ T cells, a positive correlation between CD73 expression and CD4 counts (P=0.0003) was detected. CD73 expression on CD8+ T cells negatively correlated with HLA-DR (

The purpose of the present study is to make a parallel analysis of half a century of technology criticism from the point of view of a special genre of literature, the dystopia, as well as from the point of view of technology critical philosophy. We regard here the genre dystopia as the vehicle for literary technology criticism, as a collection of texts written by non-philosophers regarding the negative tendencies in technological development. In the demonstration of the critique of technology in 20th century philosophical theories, this paper concentrates on the works of Oswald Spengler, Walter Benjamin, the Frankfurt School (Horkheimer, Adorno and Marcuse) and Martin Heidegger. The analysis is not exhaustive of all sources, but reviews a sufficient body to draw valid conclusions.

Structural aspects of crystal nucleation in undercooled liquids are explored using a nonlinear hydrodynamic theory of crystallization proposed recently [G. I. Tóth et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 26, 055001 (2014)JCOMEL0953-898410.1088/0953-8984/26/5/055001], which is based on combining fluctuating hydrodynamics with the phase-field crystal theory. We show that in this hydrodynamic approach not only homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation processes are accessible, but also growth front nucleation, which leads to the formation of new (differently oriented) grains at the solid-liquid front in highly undercooled systems. Formation of dislocations at the solid-liquid interface and interference of density waves ahead of the crystallization front are responsible for the appearance of the new orientations at the growth front that lead to spherulite-like nanostructures.

Triple differential cross sections are calculated for the ionization of NH3 by positron impact in coplanar and perpendicular geometrical arrangements. The cross sections are determined for symmetrically emerging particles with equal energies. The positron cross sections are compared with previously calculated electron cross sections for the same kinematical conditions.

In this paper general dynamic equations describing the time evolution of isothermal quasi-incompressible multicomponent liquids are derived in the framework of the classical Ginzburg-Landau theory of first order phase transformations. Based on the fundamental {equations of continuum mechanics}, a general convection-diffusion dynamics is set up first for compressible liquids. The constitutive relations for the diffusion fluxes and the capillary stress are determined in the framework of gradient theories. {Next the general definition of incompressibility is given}, which is taken into account {in the derivation} by using the Lagrange multiplier method. To validate the theory, the dynamic equations are solved numerically for the quaternary quasi-incompressible Cahn-Hilliard system. It is demonstrated that variable density (i) has no effect on equilibrium (in case of a suitably constructed free energy functional), {and (ii) can} influence non-equilibrium pattern formation significantly.

Using phase-field theory we demonstrate that osmotic stress may result in intense convection in solidifying eutectic systems. Under isothermal conditions the natural convection is of osmotic origin, and driven by the non-equilibrium composition field. Osmotic forces arise mostly in the interface layer, since large concentration gradients are localized near the triple junctions of the phases. Tuning friction forces at the solid–liquid interface controls the intensity of fluid flow. We have found that convection in the low friction regime significantly affects microstructural pattern formation. Osmotic convection-driven instability of the solid–liquid interface is observed that leads to cellular and dendritic eutectic crystal growth. The mechanism we propose is distinct from diffusive instability that is widely acknowledged as the main cause of cellular and fingerlike patterns.

The PMK-2 facility is a full-pressure thermal-hydraulic model of the primary and partly the secondary circuit of the VVER-type units of Paks NPP. The facility was the first integral-type facility for VVERs. The PMK-2 was followed later by the PACTEL (for VVER-440), the ISB, and PSB for VVER-1000. Since the startup of the facility in 1985, 55 experiments have been performed primarily in international frameworks with the participation of experts from 29 European and overseas countries forming a scientific school to better understand VVER system behaviour and reach a high level of modelling of accident sequences. The ATHLET, CATHARE, and RELAP5 codes have been validated including both qualitative and quantitative assessments. The former was almost exclusively applied to the early phase of validation by integral experiments, while the quantitative assessments have been performed by the Fast Fourier Transform Based Method. Paper gives comprehensive information on the design features of PMK-2 facility with a special respect to the representativeness of phenomena, the experiments performed, and the results of the validation of ATHLET, CATHARE, and RELAP5 codes. Safety significance of the PMK-2 projects is also discussed.

Potassium white micas in sheared basement and cover rocks from the Central Western Carpathians (CWC) were investigated by PL microscopy, electron microprobe (EMP) analysis, Mossbauer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. We specified chemical and spectroscopic characteristics, which allow distinction between celadonite-poor (muscovitic) and celadonite-rich (phengitic) white mica (Wmca). Wmca generations formed during a polystage evolution in changing P–T conditions ranging from the very low to medium temperatures at medium pressure within the Alpidic CWC orogenic wedge. BSE imaging, EMP analyses and X-ray element maps indicate chemical differences between muscovite and phengite, mainly in Al, Fe and Si contents. Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed their contrasting spectra, related to different hyperfine parameters, mainly of quadrupole splitting (QS of Ms: 2.6–2.7 mm/s, or 2.9–3.0 mm/s for Phg), corresponding to Fe2+ and Fe3+ contents. Blastomylonitic samples with a single dominating Wmca generation and finite-strain XZ sections were suitable for micro-Raman study. These data corroborate correlation between the frequencies of two vibrational modes of Wmca and Si content. The investigated Wmca generations indicate an enhanced transformation between Wmca phases in shear zones.
