Within Jezero crater, a 45 km diameter Noachian-aged crater on Mars, the Upper Fan group (UFg) stratigraphy records the youngest interval of sediment deposition via aqueous activity on the western fan. From orbital images, the UFg surface is characterized by ridges interpreted to be associated with channels that can be group based on orientation into distinct elongate and fan-shaped deposits. UFg deposits primarily consist of a sandstone to granule conglomerate facies covered by a lithified boulder conglomerate or dense accumulations of loose boulders along the surface. The coarse-grained nature of UFg deposits and the unconformable contact with the underlying fan stratigraphy suggest that the UFg represents a higher-energy shift from the relatively longer-lived, lower-energy aqueous systems interpreted in underlying fan stratigraphy. The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover encountered the main exposures of the UFg deposits beginning on Sol 755 and has been continuously collecting data along its northwestward traverse across the fan, enabling reconciliation of orbitally-derived geomorphology with in-situ observations from the rover and Ingenuity helicopter. This work represents a combined assessment of the geomorphology and the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the UFg in order to establish its depositional and emplacement history. Determining the origins of the Upper Fan sequence will clarify how, when, and in what order aqueous environments evolved through time within Jezero crater (e.g. crater infill, overflow, breach, and lake level drop;). Finally, this work will provide critical context for the three rock samples within the UFg sample suite.

Many workers have successfully utilized a variety of lunar materials to infer the sources and processing history of volatiles on the Moon. In situ techniques via NanoSIMS have enabled a plethora of hydrogen isotope measurements of isolated grains in regolith and apatite within igneous rocks, revealing an extraordinarily large range of δD values from ~ -900 to +1000‰. The lowest of these δD values are related to the incorporation of solar wind hydrogen, which is pure 1H. Exposure to solar wind results in structural damage to crystalline phases, forming ubiquitous tens-to-hundreds of nanometer thick amorphous rims on mature regolith grains. Solar wind implantation of H+ is also is also thought to result in the formation of nanophase Fe0 (npFe), a quantitative metric of surface exposure time (e.g., Is/FeO). The formation of npFe can be generally described via the reaction: Fe2+O + H2 = Fe0 + H2O, resulting in the formation of endogenous molecular water reservoirs.

Sedimentary fans developed at the mouths of Martian valleys have been interpreted as the deposits of sustained surface water flow on early Mars building either fluvial fan systems or deltas into standing bodies of water. Whilst much insight has been gleaned from orbital observations, it is only possible to constrain the character, relative timing and persistence of ancient aqueous activity on Mars through detailed on-the-ground interrogation of sedimentary successions built during fan growth. A prominent sedimentary fan deposit at the western margin of Jezero crater – the Western fan – has been interpreted from orbital data/observations to be a river delta that prograded into an ancient lake basin during the Late Noachian-Early Hesperian epochs on Mars (~3.6-3.8 Ga). The Western fan deposit forms a point-sourced depositional system developed at the mouth of Neretva Vallis, a valley system that is incised across the crater rim and has an extensive extra-crater catchment draining over diverse ancient geological units in Nili Planum. The mechanism of crater rim breaching remains unconstrained. Between 2022 and 2023, the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover explored the Western fan, with the objective of characterizing its paleoenvironmental context and collecting a diverse suite of sedimentary rock samples for return to Earth via the Mars Sample Return mission. Perseverance has now completed her traverse across the Western fan having commenced in the distal downstream sectors exposed at the erosional front of the fan and then crossing across its upper exposed surface toward the fan apex region near the mouth of Neretva Vallis. This transect provides a unique window into a Martian sediment routing system at a time when climate conditions permitted the flow of surface water. In this contribution, we review the overall sedimentary architecture of the fan and develop a model for its evolution based on detailed mapping of lithofacies changes across the fan. A first-order synoptic overview is presented.

Since Feb 2021, the Perseverance rover has collected samples in the Jezero crater. The plan baselined at the 2018 landing site selection, subsequently further developed by the Mars-2020 team, and presented to the Decadal Survey included the exploration and sampling of the Jezero crater rim and the Nili Planum area, a rock record that is important to preserving the science return of the endeavor. Specifically, the science team identified the following prioritized science objectives aligned with community objectives that are not covered by the current sample cache: 1) Investigate the habitable environments with potential biosignatures from a more ancient time interval and from a diverse set of geological environments (incl. exposed subsurface) than the Jezero crater sedimentary deposits (Fig. 2). (2) Determine radioisotopic ages for well-defined craterretaining surfaces and/or the Isidis basin impact event. (3) Characterize ancient aqueous environments to study climate, environmental transitions, and habitability on ancient Mars. (4) Investigate planetary accretion, crustal evolution, and dynamo activity through analysis and sampling of igneous lithologies. (5) Study the geology of basin-forming impacts. In addition, for the Jezero rim and any Jezero ejecta: (6) Analyze Jezero impactites for potentially habitable hydrothermal environments and radioisotopic dating of the Jezero crater formation. From 2018 to now, we used a combination of High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) and Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) data to further characterize Jezero rim and Nili Planum, culminating in our prioritized sample location recommendations: (1) Monument Valley and (2) Northwest Jezero rim.

Most models of planetary differentiation involve the formation of metallic cores during or after extensive silicate melting, but some volatile-rich reservoirs in the protoplanetary disk did not accrete substantial amounts of Fe,Ni-metal. Instead, their potential core-forming assemblages were dominated by Fe,Ni-sulfides and oxides due to high ƒO2 and ƒS2. Derivative melts from these assemblages may have been capable of percolative migration leading to core formation prior to silicate melting. However, no direct evidence for this process has been reported in meteoritic literature. Similarly, while many iron meteorites are thought to represent cores of their respective parent bodies, no direct evidence for Fe,Ni-sulfide/oxide cores have been reported to-date. The most promising potential for such evidence may be found in the anomalous noble metal trace element proportions of restitic oxidized primitive achondrites (i.e., brachinites, logƒO2 ~IW-1), which are similar to those found in sulfides of Rumuruti-type chondrites (RCs) that contain only trace amounts of Fe,Ni-metal at logƒO2 ≥ IW-1. This work addresses the following outstanding questions: (1) Are molten sulfides in oxidized meteorite assemblages capable of percolative melt migration? (2) How is this process recorded in the noble metal (i.e., siderophile/chalcophile) trace element geochemistry of relevant meteorites? (3) Did O,S-rich meteorite parent bodies form sulfide cores?

Constraining the initial abundances of short-lived radionuclides in planetary materials helps determine the spatial and temporal distribution of interstellar material added during the initial stages of Solar System formation.

The western fan of Jezero crater displays features interpreted as fluvial and deltaic sedimentary rocks from orbital data. Images obtained using the SuperCam Remote Micro-Imager (RMI) and the Mastcam-Z camera provide in-situ observations of Jezero crater’s western fan in various locations along the Perseverance traverse. In the last two years, the rover analyzed the fan front from a distance using these imaging tools and at close range using its entire payload. Then, in 2023, the Perseverance rover explored the top of the western Jezero sedimentary fan. Here we show that fluvial topsets and deltaic foresets dominate sedimentary rocks. Determining the boundary between fluvial and prodelta deposits enables us to draw the evolution of the lake level through time.

The Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division at the NASA Johnson Space Center houses a unique combination of laboratories, instruments, infrastructure, technical expertise, and other assets for conducting broad-based world-class planetary research. These facilities have been accessed for decades by hundreds of external scientists, including faculty, post-docs, students, and interns, most at no-cost and on a collaborative basis. With funding through NASA’s Planetary Science Enabling Facilities (PSEF) program, we have established the NASA Facility for Astromaterials Research (NFAR) to expand access to and enhance these laboratories for a diverse and inclusive external user base, focusing on training of the next generation of scientists and, thus, maximizing the science return from research funded by R&A programs in NASA’s Planetary Science Division (PSD). NFAR enables new planetary sample analyses, making new scientific discoveries possible, including training the next generation of planetary scientists. NFAR laboratories are co-located with JSC Curation that houses the NASA-controlled astromaterials collections, thus enabling direct access to both research and curation expertise, to facilitate specialized sample handling and analysis of allocated samples to sample PIs, particularly those affiliated with institutions that historically have limited access to or lack in-house analytical or experimental facilities.

Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is currently exploring Jezero crater, which contains an ancient lake-delta system with a high potential for past habitability. One of Perseverance’s primary science goals is to collect a set of scientifically return-worthy samples for return to Earth (Mars Sample Return; MSR). Between February 2021 and December 2023, Perseverance has sealed 23 tubes containing 20 rock cores, 2 regolith samples and one atmosphere sample. All rock and regolith samples are accompanied by a set of observations (Sample Threshold Observation Protocol, the STOP List) performed on abrasion patches or regolith near each sample collection site. These observations are documented in the Initial Reports and the Sample Dossier (https://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/mars2020/returned_sample_science.htm). Here we provide an overview of the samples collected during the Margin campaign. The Margin unit is situated interior and adjacent to the western crater rim and exhibits a strong carbonate signal from orbital reflectance spectroscopy. Stratigraphically the unit lies beneath the previously explored curvilinear and blocky units of the fan top and is therefore older than those units. Based on its position near the crater rim and the strong carbonate detections it has been proposed to be a shoreline deposit with possible lacustrine carbonates. Alternative hypotheses include pyroclastic, fluviolacustrine and aeolian deposits. Based on rover observations a lacustrine shoreline deposit seems most likely. The planning of the Margin campaign took place during the summer of 2023, and 3-5 samples were baselined to be collected. Exploration of the Margin unit began in September 2023 and so far, two samples have been collected: the Pelican Point core at the Hans Amundsen Memorial Workspace in the Mandu Wall region, and the Lefroy Bay core at Lake Newell in the Turquoise Bay region (Fig. 1). The associated abrasion patches are Amherst Point (Pelican Point) and Bills Bay (Lefroy Bay). Mandu Wall is interpreted to be stratigraphically lower than Turquoise Bay based on topography.

The Mars 2020 mission has been conducting ground-based investigation of the geology, habitability, and biosignature preservation potential and collecting samples for return to Earth in Jezero crater, Mars for nearly 3 years. Analysis of these samples will address outstanding questions in Mars science including potential habitability and how and why the climate the interior of the planet evolved through time. As of December 2023, samples of 4 igneous rocks of the Jezero crater floor and 9 sedimentary rocks of the Jezero fan and inner margin, remain on the rover. 15 tubes remain to be filled to enhance the diversity of the cache and broaden the scope of the science questions that can be addressed with returned sample studies. The next step in the mission is to explore the Jezero crater rim. It will be imperative to investigate and sample the diversity of crater rim rocks because they represent materials from Mars’ most ancient crust older than those sampled in Jezero crater, a diversity of geologic processes, and potential ancient habitable environments that have not yet been investigated or sampled. Ongoing mapping efforts are using orbiter data and long-distance images from Perseverance to identify and interpret the geologic context of the crater rim. Building on this effort and the broader geologic context for the crater rim put forward by previous studies, we identify diverse targets for in situ investigation and potential sampling by Mars 2020.

Identification of evolved achrondritic clasts suggests that some early planetesimals experienced extensive differentiation and formed chemically evolved crusts. Many of these samples contain volatile-bearing phases (i.e., apatite, merrillite, nominally anhydrous minerals), which can be used to constrain volatile budgets and abundancies via in-situ measurements. These ancient crustal rocks are subject to high heat, moderate pressures, potentially hot mineral-rich fluids, and degassing that has likely modified many of these volatiles, and their abundancies do not represent the composition of the primary magma from which these achondrites formed. In this work we attempt to deconvolve the thermal evolution of these samples to provide petrologic information that can be used for making inferences regarding their volatile history, and ultimately constraining volatile budgets on planetary bodies in the early Solar System. Here, we combine in-situ major element geochemistry, thermodynamic modeling, and detailed textural and microstructural observations to reconstruct the thermal and textural evolution of howardite DOM 10100, which contains a dacite within its matrix. Previous analyses of several sections of DOM 10100 suggest that the dacitic clast is evidence for partial melting of Vesta’s differentiated basaltic crust, making it an ideal candidate for evolved crustal studies. While its igneous petrogenesis has been well constrained, there is still opportunity to better characterize its post-crystallization thermal history, including possible thermal metamorphism and cooling.

Impact events modify and leave behind a complex history of rock metamorphism on terrestrial planets. Evidence for an impact event may be recorded in physical changes to minerals, such as mineral deformation and formation of high P-T polymorphs, but also in the form of chemical fingerprints, such as enhanced elemental diffusion and isotopic mixing. Here we explore laboratory shock-induced physical and chemical changes to zircon and feldspar, the former of which is of interest because its trace elements abundances and isotope ratios are used extensively in geochemistry and geochronology. To this end, a granular mixture of Bishop Tuff sanidine and Kuehl Lake zircon, both with well characterized Pb isotope compositions, was prepared and then shocked via a flat plate accelerator. The peak pressure of the experiment, as calculated by the impedance matching method, was ~24 GPa although a broader range of P-T conditions is anticipated due to starting sample porosity. Unshocked and shocked materials were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and Raman spectroscopy. These methods show that the starting zircon material had abundant metamict regions, and the conversion of the feldspar to glass in the post-shock material. Analyses of the shocked product also yielded multiple occurrences of the high-pressure ZrSiO4 polymorph reidite, with some domains up to 300 μm across. The possibility of U-Pb system disturbance was evaluated via laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The isotopic data reveal that disturbance of the U-Pb geochronometer in the reidite was minimal (<2% for the main U-Pb geochronometers). To better constrain the P-T conditions during the shock experiment, we complement impedance matching pressure calculations with iSALE2D impact simulations. The simulated results yield a range of P-T conditions experienced during the experiment and show that much of the sample may have reached >30 GPa, which is consistent with formation of reidite. In the recovered shocked material, we identified lamellae of reidite, some of which interlock with zircon lamellae. Reidite {112} twins were identified, which we interpret to have formed to reduce stress between the crystal structure of the host zircon and reidite. These two findings support the interpretation that shear transformation enabled the transition of zircon to reidite. The size and presence of reidite found here indicate that this phase is probably common in impact-shocked crustal rocks that experienced ~25 to ~35 GPa, especially when the target material has porosity. Additionally, shock loading of the zircon and transformation to reidite at these pressures in porous materials is unlikely to significantly disturb the U-Pb system in zircon and that the reidite inherits the primary U and Pb elemental and isotopic ratios from the zircon.

During the first year of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, Perseverance rover has investigated the dark crater floor unit of Jezero crater and four samples of this unit have been collected. The focus of this paper is to assess the potential of these samples to calibrate the crater-based Martian chronology. We first review the previous estimation of crater-based model age of this unit. Then, we investigate the impact crater density distribution across the floor unit. It reveals that the crater density is heterogeneous from areas which have been exposed to the bombardment during the last 3 Ga to areas very recently exposed to bombardment. It suggests a complex history of exposure to impact cratering. We also display evidence of several remnants of deposits on the top of the dark floor unit across Jezero below which the dark floor unit may have been buried. We propose the following scenario of burying/exhumation: the dark floor unit would have been initially buried below a unit that was a few tens of meters thick. This unit then gradually eroded away due to Aeolian processes from the northeast to the west, resulting in uneven exposure to impact bombardment over 3 Ga. A cratering model reproducing this scenario confirms the feasibility of this hypothesis. Due to the complexity of its exposure history, the Jezero dark crater floor unit will require additional detailed analysis to understand how the Mars 2020 mission samples of the crater floor can be used to inform the Martian cratering chronology.

Séítah is the stratigraphically lowest formation visited by Perseverance in the Jezero crater floor. We present the data obtained by SuperCam: texture by imagery, chemistry by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, and mineralogy by Supercam Visible and Infrared reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. The Séítah formation consists of igneous, weakly altered rocks dominated by millimeter-sized grains of olivine with the presence of low-Ca and high-Ca pyroxenes, and other primary minerals (e.g., plagioclase, Cr-Fe-Ti oxides, phosphates). Along a ∼140 m long section in Séítah, SuperCam analyses showed evidence of geochemical and mineralogical variations, from the contact with the overlying Máaz formation, going deeper in the formation. Bulk rock and olivine Mg#, grain size, olivine content increase gradually further from the contact. Along the section, olivine Mg# is not in equilibrium with the bulk rock Mg#, indicating local olivine accumulation. These observations are consistent with Séítah being the deep ultramafic member of a cumulate series derived from the fractional crystallization and slow cooling of the parent magma at depth. Possible magmatic processes and exhumation mechanisms of Séítah are discussed. Séítah rocks show some affinity with some rocks at Gusev crater, and with some Martian meteorites suggesting that such rocks are not rare on the surface of Mars. Séítah is part of the Nili Fossae regional olivine-carbonate unit observed from orbit. Future exploration of Perseverance on the rim and outside of the crater will help determine if the observations from the crater floor can be extrapolated to the whole unit or if this unit is composed of distinct sub-units with various origins.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater on 18 February 2021. After a 100-sol period of commissioning and the Ingenuity Helicopter technology demonstration, Perseverance began its first science campaign to explore the enigmatic Jezero crater floor, whose igneous or sedimentary origins have been much debated in the scientific community. This paper describes the campaign plan developed to explore the crater floor's Máaz and Séítah formations and summarizes the results of the campaign between sols 100–379. By the end of the campaign, Perseverance had traversed more than 5 km, created seven abrasion patches, and sealed nine samples and a witness tube. Analysis of remote and proximity science observations show that the Máaz and Séítah formations are igneous in origin and composed of five and two geologic members, respectively. The Séítah formation represents the olivine-rich cumulate formed from differentiation of a slowly cooling melt or magma body, and the Máaz formation likely represents a separate series of lava flows emplaced after Séítah. The Máaz and Séítah rocks also preserve evidence of multiple episodes of aqueous alteration in secondary minerals like carbonate, Fe/Mg phyllosilicates, sulfates, and perchlorate, and surficial coatings. Post-emplacement processes tilted the rocks near the Máaz-Séítah contact and substantial erosion modified the crater floor rocks to their present-day expressions. Results from this crater floor campaign, including those obtained upon return of the collected samples, will help to build the geologic history of events that occurred in Jezero crater and provide time constraints on the formation of the Jezero delta.

In situ geologic context mapping based on rover and helicopter observations provides documentation of a nearly continuous record of geology and exposed surface structure over a 120 m-wide corridor along the traverse of the Mars 2020/Perseverance rover. The results record the geologic context of Mars 2020 campaign sites and sample sites, including the local extent of bedrock outcrops, stratigraphy, attitude, and structure from imaging and rover-based remote sensing, and outcrop lithology based on in situ proximity science. Mapping identifies a sequence of igneous lithologies including (a) early mafic, possibly intrusive, rocks; (b) pervasively fractured and deeply altered massive bedrock of undetermined protolith; (c) buried and exhumed lava flows with pahoehoe and aa textures; (d) several varieties of regolith; and (e) small impact craters.

The geological units on the floor of Jezero crater, Mars, are part of a wider regional stratigraphy of olivine-rich rocks, which extends well beyond the crater. We investigate the petrology of olivine and carbonate-bearing rocks of the Séítah formation in the floor of Jezero. Using multispectral images and x-ray fluorescence data, acquired by the Perseverance rover, we performed a petrographic analysis of the Bastide and Brac outcrops within this unit. We find that these outcrops are composed of igneous rock, moderately altered by aqueous fluid. The igneous rocks are mainly made of coarse-grained olivine, similar to some Martian meteorites. We interpret them as an olivine cumulate, formed by settling and enrichment of olivine through multi-stage cooling of a thick magma body.

Calcium isotope ratios are readily mass-fractionated by low-temperature depositional processes that can be recorded in sedimentary rocks and, therefore, have the potential to track distinct geochemical signatures of recycled materials in mantle-derived igneous rocks. In this study, I report calcium isotopic compositions for well-characterized lavas from the Central American volcanic arc that exhibit a range of trace element and radiogenic isotope signatures that have been used to indicate variable amounts of subducted marine carbonate and hemipelagic sedimentary rocks, fresh carbonatite lavas from Oldoinyo Lengai Volcano, Tanzania, and an intrusive carbonatite clast erupted 12.8 ka from the Laacher See Volcano, Germany. I observed no calcium isotope evidence for recycled sedimentary rocks in the Central American arc magmas or in the Oldoinyo Lengai carbonatite volcanic rocks. They all exhibit isotopic compositions similar to rocks dominated by a primitive, mantle-like, bulk silicate Earth (BSE) composition. The exception in this work is the calcium isotope composition measured in the intrusive Laacher See carbonatite that is resolvable from BSE (δ^44 Ca = 0.0). Although this calcium isotopic signature might be related to ancient carbonate recycling, the magnitude and relatively light calcium isotopic composition (δ^44 Ca = –0.4) of this carbonatite could also reflect an origin that involved partial melting of altered lithospheric mantle, from which isotopically heavy Ca-bearing fluids have been lost. The decoupled signatures between trace elements and their radiogenic isotopes and those recorded by calcium isotope data are important because they likely reflect different sources and processes, and demonstrate that sediment subduction is not a bulk mixing process.

The SuperCam instrument on the PerseveranceMars 2020 rover uses a pulsed 1064 nm laser to ablate targets at a distance and conduct laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) by analyzing the light from the resulting plasma. SuperCam LIBS spectra are preprocessed to remove ambient light, noise, and the continuum signal present in LIBS observations. Prior to quantification, spectra are masked to remove noisier spectrometer regions andspectra are normalized to minimize signal fluctuations and effectsof target distance.In some cases, the spectra are also standardized or binned prior to quantification. To determine quantitative elemental compositionsof diverse geologic materials at Jezero crater, Mars, we use a suite of 1198 laboratory spectra of 334 well-characterized reference samples. The samples were selected to span a wide range of compositions and include typical silicate rocks, pure minerals (e.g.,silicates, sulfates, carbonates, oxides),more unusual compositions (e.g.,Mn oreand sodalite), andreplicates of the sintered SuperCam calibration targets (SCCTs) onboardthe rover. For each major element (SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, FeOT, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O), the database was subdivided into five“folds” with similar distributions of the element of interest. One fold was held out as an independent test set, and the remaining fourfolds were used to optimize multivariate regression models relating the spectrum to the composition. We considered a variety of models, and selected several for further investigation for each element, based primarily on the root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) on the test set, when analyzed at 3m. In cases with several models of comparable performance at 3 m, we incorporated the SCCT performance at different distances to choose the preferred model. Shortly after landing on Mars and collecting initial spectra of geologic targets, we selected one model per element. Subsequently, with additional data from geologic targets, some models were revised to ensure results that are more consistent with geochemical constraints. The calibration discussed here is a snapshot of an ongoing effort to deliver the most accurate chemical compositions with SuperCam LIBS.

This study assesses how petrographic textures and trace element distributions, combined with thermodynamic models, can act as indicators of metamorphic equilibrium and/or trace element mobility in highly metamorphosed eucrite, Elephant Moraine (EET) 90020.

A population study of the high temperature early-formed solid particles in the MIL 090019 CO3 carbonaceous chondrite, when compared to similar studies conducted on other chondritic meteorites, will provide insights into the accretion processes of early formed chondritic parent bodies.

Hydrous components were measured in nominally anhydrous minerals, primarily lunar feldspar, and reported by Simon et al. (2020). In the feldspar mineral structure, these components are contained in the form of OH, H2O, and/or NH4+molecules (Johnson, 2006 and references therein). The advantages of the ion microprobe technique employed by Simon et al. (2020) include high spatial resolution, apparent insensitivity to crystal orientation, high precision, and low detection limits, but unlike complementary spectroscopy techniques (i.e., FTIR) they preclude assignment of molecular species(Mosenfelder et al. 2015). Convention in the lunar sample community is to report major elemental abundances and hydrogen as oxides, H2O is the oxide for H. This convention was not followed by Simon et al. (2020), but rather the measured hydrogen component was reported as H to avoid the appearance of assigning the measured hydrogen concentration to a specific molecular species.
