Abstract

To study the economic and political activity of PRC in Oceania (among the developing states of the Pacific region) seems to be a very urgent task in connection with the growing global rivalry between the US and China and, in particular, in the Indo-Pacific. By actively developing trade and economic ties, providing preferential loans, and engaging in its global Belt and Road Initiative, China is gaining leverage to strengthen its political influence. Thus, gradually more and more countries in Oceania break off official relations with Taiwan in favor of China and support it on painful international issues. The countries of Oceania need financial assistance to modernize their economies, develop infrastructure, and implement social programs. Unlike Western countries, China's financial assistance is more accessible and does not involve complicated approval procedures and financial reporting, and it makes China an attractive source of cash receipts. This is also associated with the growth of the debt of a number of Pacific states to the PRC, which in some cases is of a very critical nature. Chinese expansion is quite obvious and is already causing concern and criticism from the traditional patrons of Oceania - Australia, the USA, and France. For keeping the political control over the region, the latter are forced to respond to the challenge from China through the implementation of new joint economic and humanitarian programs, military support, and criticism of Chinese initiatives in the region, expected by the local political elites. The battle for influence in Oceania is becoming increasingly important in China's strategy and Beijing has a chance to become a major player in this region, including conversion of economic influence into military presence.

Abstract

We present the results of developing a system of thermal regime maintenance for the onboard complex of scientific instruments of the space radio telescope installed on the Spektr-R spacecraft. The structure of the system of thermal regime maintenance is presented that includes a set of autonomous systems of constructive elements of the radio telescope. Basic schemes and composition of aggregates are presented, and main principles of operation of the autonomous systems supporting the thermal regime of the radio telescope are considered.

The Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Federal Space Agency are planning to launch Radioastron in 2011, which is a unique space observatory with a 10-meter reflector antenna. In conjunction with the largest ground-based radio telescopes and tracking stations, it forms the first system that will be able to carry out studies with a resolution millions of times greater than that of eyesight.

Abstract

The space interferometer Radioastron is working jointly with the largest radio telescopes of the world. Ground tracking stations provide for retrieving the information and determining the orbital parameters for data processing centers. The project is aimed at systematic studies of images of radio emitting regions, their coordinates, and time-dependent variations near super-massive black holes in galactic nuclei, stellarmass black holes, neutron and quark stars, regions of star and planet formation in our and other galaxies, the structure of interplanetary and interstellar plasma, and the Earth’s gravitational field.

Abstract

The Russian Academy of Sciences and Federal Space Agency, together with the participation of many international organizations, worked toward the launch of the RadioAstron orbiting space observatory with its onboard 10-m reflector radio telescope from the Baikonur cosmodrome on July 18, 2011. Together with some of the largest ground-based radio telescopes and a set of stations for tracking, collecting, and reducing the data obtained, this space radio telescope forms a multi-antenna ground-space radio interferometer with extremely long baselines, making it possible for the first time to study various objects in the Universe with angular resolutions a million times better than is possible with the human eye. The project is targeted at systematic studies of compact radio-emitting sources and their dynamics. Objects to be studied include supermassive black holes, accretion disks, and relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei, stellar-mass black holes, neutron stars and hypothetical quark stars, regions of formation of stars and planetary systems in our and other galaxies, interplanetary and interstellar plasma, and the gravitational field of the Earth. The results of ground-based and inflight tests of the space radio telescope carried out in both autonomous and ground-space interferometric regimes are reported. The derived characteristics are in agreement with the main requirements of the project. Abstract

We present an overview of the current status of the space mission Millimetron. Millimetron is a large 10-m cooled space telescope optimized for operation in the submillimeter and far infrared wavelengths. This mission will be able to contribute to the solution of several key problems in astrophysics, such as study of the formation and evolution of stars and planets, galaxies, quasars and many others. The telescope will have an unprecedented sensitivity in the single-dish observation mode and an extremely high spatial resolution as an element of a ground-space very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) system. The mission will have a cryogenic instruments and antenna, which will be cooled passively with radiation shields and actively with mechanical coolers. With this cooling combination the 10-m space telescope may reach a temperature of about 4.5 K. The Millimetron is proposed as a Russian-led mission with an extensive international consortium in various countries. The mission launch is planned for 2017.

International audience; Millimetron is a Russian-led 12 m diameter submillimeter and far-infrared space observatory which is included in the Space Plan of the Russian Federation for launch around 2017. With its large collecting area and state-of-the-art receivers, it will enable unique science and allow at least one order of magnitude improvement with respect to the Herschel Space Observatory. Millimetron will be operated in two basic observing modes: as a single-dish observatory, and as an element of a ground-space very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) system. As single-dish, angular resolutions on the order of 3 to 12 arc sec will be achieved and spectral resolutions of up to a million employing heterodyne techniques. As VLBI antenna, the chosen elliptical orbit will provide extremely large VLBI baselines (beyond 300,000 km) resulting in micro-arc second angular resolution.
