1. Abscisic acid treatment to avoid late spring frosts damage during ‘Chardonnay’ vines budbreak

Abstract

The production of early budbreak Vitis vinifera L. cultivars in southern Brazilian highlands has been limited by the occurrence of late spring frosts. This study aimed to evaluate the abscisic acid (ABA) application on different dates to delay 'Chardonnay' vines budbreak, avoiding periods of greatest probability of frost occurrence. Experiments were carried out in a commercial vineyard, in Sao Joaquim, Santa Catarina, Brazil, at 1,270 m a.s.l., 1,270 m altitude, 28°14'51”S, 49°57'42”W, in two cycles. Five ABA concentrations were adopted on each cycle, ranging from 0 to 2000 mg L-1 and applications were made on the traditional date of pruning, which in this area represents the time when budbreak starts on shoots' apical buds, and two anticipated dates up to thirty days from this last. ABA was incorporated into lanolin and the resulting ointment was applied on the top of pruned shoots. On 2012/2013 cycle, vines treated 22 days before traditional date of pruning (DBP) sprouted in 29 days after treatment (DAT), while those treated on traditional pruning date sprouted in 18 DAT. The maximum delay observed with ABA comparing to control was four days. Treatments applied 30 DBP on 2013/2014 cycle resulted in sprouting in 37 DAT, while treatments applied on traditional pruning date, in 15 DAT. Control vines sprouted in 25 DAT and those treated with 2000 mg L-1 ABA in 28 DAT, delaying budbreak by three days. The latest pruning date and the highest ABA concentration (2000 mg L-1) presented better effect on vine budbreak delay. Changes were in general more expressively caused by the change in application dates. There were no problems with non-broken buds and the production was only slightly changed by ABA treatments. ABA application through this methodology was little effective on delaying grapevines budbreak and is not recommended for commercial use.

Abstract

'Sauvignon Blanc' (Vitis vinifera L.) has a great importance in the highlands of Santa Catarina (›900 m a.s.l.), southern Brazil. Grapevine production is recent in this region and there is little information about the ideal crop management for this cultivar. Balance between leaf area and yield benefits plant growth and grape composition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of canopy management on grape composition of 'Sauvignon Blanc'. Experiment was carried out in a commercial vineyard, at 1,293 m a.s.l., 28°15'13”S and 49°57'02”W. Canopy management treatments were applied during 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, by topping of shoots. Control did not receive any canopy treatment. Leaf area was estimated by evaluating the surface of each leaf using a direct and non-destructive model. Ripening was monitored weekly from veraison to harvest. Leaf area results indicated that plants showed an excessive vegetative growth on both seasons. Yield ranged from 7 to 9 t ha-1 (2.1 and 2.7 kg plant-1). Leaf area treatments affected the accumulation of soluble solids and the titratable acidity on berries. Others variables were little affected by treatments. Weather conditions, mainly rainfall, affected grape ripening. Canopy management favored a plant balanced development of 'Sauvignon Blanc'. Plants in which the shoots were kept with fourteen and eighteen leaves or that received no topping (between 1.4 and 3.6 m2 kg-1 of grape) presented more suitable performance in this vineyard.

Abstract

The imaging Linnik interferometer equipped with two lasers of different colors is under development and metrological study at National Metrology Institute of Brazil (INMETRO). This work reports the self-referenced method for practical calibration of the secondary laser wavelength. The method is based on accurate digitalization and comparison of the waveforms for both reference He-Ne stabilized laser at 633 nm and secondary laser diode at 488 nm. The process makes use of multiple step phase-shifting technique for waveform measurement and multi-parameter fit for wavelength extraction. The advantage of the method is that no extra hardware of realignment of interferometer is required to perform the calibration.

Abstract

The double color interferometric microscope is developed for step height standards nanometrology traceable to meter definition via primary wavelength laser standards. The setup is based on two stabilized lasers to provide traceable measurements of highest possible resolution down to the physical limits of the optical instruments in sub-nanometer to micrometer range of the heights. The wavelength reference is He-Ne 633 nm stabilized laser, the secondary source is Blue-Green 488 nm grating laser diode. Accurate fringe portion is measured by modulated phase-shift technique combined with imaging interferometry and Fourier processing. Self calibrating methods are developed to correct systematic interferometric errors.

Abstract

Interference microscopy is an important field of dimensional surface metrology because it provides direct traceability of the measurements to the SI base unit definition of the metre. With a typical measurement range from micrometres to nanometres interference microscopy (IM) covers the gap between classic metrology and nanometrology, providing continuous transfer of dimensional metrology into new areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Therefore IM is considered to be an indispensable tool for traceable transfer of the metre unit to different instruments. We report here the metrological study of an absolute Linnik interference microscope (IM) based on two frequency stabilized lasers. The design permits the flexible use of both lasers for measurements depending on the demand of the concrete measurement task. By principle of operation IM is combination of imaging and phase-shifting interferometry (PSI). The traceability is provided by the wavelength reference, that is, a He-Ne 633 nm stabilized laser. The second laser source, that is, a Blue-Green 488 nm grating stabilized laser diode, is used for improvements of resolution, and also for resolving integer fringe discontinuities on sharp features of the surface. The IM was optimized for surface height metrology. We have performed the study of the systematic effects of the measurements. This study allowed us to improve the hardware and software of IM and to find corrections for main systematic errors. The IM is purposed for 1D to 3D height metrology and surface topography in an extended range from nanometres to micrometres. The advantages and disadvantages of the design and developed methods are discussed.

Abstract

The title compound was prepared by treating a methanolic solution of 12-crown-4 with an aqueous solution of aminosulfuric acid. The crystal for X-ray analysis was obtained by recrystallization from acetone. The compound [(12-crown-4)4·[NH3SO3)6] (1) is monoclinic, space groupP21/a,a=21.900(8),b=15.499(5),c=18.079(5) A, γ=67.85(2)°. Refinement led to a final conventionalR value of 0.0788 for 3280 reflections.

Abstract

The structure of the trichlorocuprate of naphtho-15-crown-5 complexed potassium has been determined by X-ray analysis. The crystal contains the complex cations [K(naphtho-15-crown-5)2]+, the anion [Cu2Cl6]2− and water molecules. The full composition of the compound in the solid state is represented by the formula [K(naphtho-15-crown-5)2]2[Cu2Cl6]·nH2O), wheren≌3. The sandwich type cations are similar to those found previously for potassium complexes with benzo-15-crown-5. The coordination number of potassium is equal to 10; the coordination polyhedron is a 15-crown-5. The coordination number of potassium is equal to 10; the coordination polyhedron is a pentagonal antiprism. The water molecules are disordered and occupy six symmetrically independent positions with a probability of ∼0.5 in the crystal. The lack of close contacts between water molecules and the remaining components enabled the treatment of the complex as a clathrate.

Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a search for the charmed strange baryon Ξc+ in the final states Λ0π+π+K− and Ξ−π+π+. The experiment was performed using the magnetic spectrometer BIS-2 with a hydrogen target located in the neutron beam of the Serpukhov accelerator. A narrow peak in the Λ0π+π+K− state is observed at a mass of ≈2440 and possibly also of ≈2310 MeV/c2, corresponding to signals for the Ξc+ → Λ0π+π+K− and Ξc+ → Σ0π+π+K− (Σ0 → Λ0γ) decays respectively. The statistics obtained for the Ξ−π+π+ state is too low to make any conclusion.

Abstract

We present results of the exclusive diffractive reaction np → Λ0K0p at 0·08 < |t|< 0·53 GeV2/c2 and momenta between 30–70 GeV/c at the Serpukhov neutron beam. Thet-dependence is exp (Bt) withB= 11·4± 2·3 (GeV/c)−2 and it exhibits the diffractive minimum at ¦t¦ 0·28 GeV2/c2 for Λ0K0 massesM < 1·8 GeV/c2.B decreases with increasingM. Correlation with the beam direction is observed in the rest frame of the Λ0K0 system: the cross section rises for the forward-going Λ0. The rise is more pronounced for higherM. Abstract

Some relevant components of uncertainty in interferometric measurements are associated with temperature measurements of material standards. This paper proposes a traceability transfer chain through a high accuracy contact temperature measurement system towards other temperature measurements systems. Those are traced to the best national metrological references in appropriate configurations for gauge-block length calibrations, allowing in that way investigations of effects and uncertainty components linked to temperature measurement of those blocks as further reductions in these uncertainties. As an application example a study of temperature gradients on gauge blocks is shown

Abstract

A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed using the e^+p and e^-p scattering data collected by the H1 experiment between 1994 and 2000. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 117 pb^{-1}. No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found in data samples with a large transverse momentum final state electron or with large missing transverse momentum. Constraints on leptoquark models are established. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength, leptoquarks with masses up to 275-325 GeV are ruled out. These limits improve and supercede earlier H1 limits based on subsamples of the data used here., 15 pages, 1 table, 5 figures

Abstract

A measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is presented based on data with an integrated luminosity of 21.1 pb^-1. The measurement is performed for photon virtualities Q^2 between 5 and 100 GeV^2, differentially in Q^2, in the jet transverse energy E_T, in E_T^2/Q^2 and in the pseudorapidity eta_lab. With the renormalization scale mu_R = E_T, perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order (NLO) give a good description of the data in most of the phase space. Significant discrepancies are observed only for jets in the proton beam direction with E_T below 20 GeV and Q^2 below 20 GeV^2. This corresponds to the region in which NLO corrections are largest and further improvement of the calculations is thus of particular interest., 20 pages, 4 figures and 3 tables

Abstract

We present a search for excited neutrinos using e-p data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA at a center-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 15 pb-1. No evidence for excited neutrino production is found. Mass dependent exclusion limits are determined for the ratio of the coupling to the compositeness scale, f/A, independently of the relative couplings to the SU(2) and U(1) gauge bosons. These limits extend the excluded region to higher masses than has been possible in previous searches at other colliders. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

Three-jet production is studied for the first time in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The measurement carried out with the H1 detector at HERA covers a large range of four-momentum transfer squared 5 < Q^2 < 5000 GeV^2 and invariant three-jet masses 25 < M_(3jet) < 140 GeV. Jets are defined by the inclusive k_T algorithm in the Breit frame. The size of the three-jet cross section and the ratio of the three-jet to the dijet cross section R_(3/2) are described over the whole phase space by the predictions of perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order. The shapes of angular jet distributions deviate significantly from a uniform population of the available phase space but are well described by the QCD calculation., 17 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed in the HI experiment at the ep collider HERA. The analysis uses e-p data collected in 1998 and 1999 at a centre-of-mass energy of 320 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ∼ 15 pb-1. No evidence for the direct production of such particles is found in a data sample with a large transverse momentum final state electron or with large missing transverse momentum, and constraints on leptoquark models are established. For a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic strength leptoquarks are excluded for masses up to ∼ 290 GeV. This analysis complements the leptoquark searches performed previously using data collected whilst HERA was operating with positrons instead of electrons. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

In this paper we study the inclusive production of the charmed baryon Λ c + in interactions of 40–70 GeV/c neutrons with protons of hydrogen target. The experiment has been performed with the use of magnetic spectrometer BIS-2 located in the neutron beam of Serpukhov accelerator. The signal of Λ c + is observed in the effective mass spectra of Λ°π+π+π−. After the removal of interactions occurring on the container of liquid hydrogen, the signal consists of 14 combinations corresponding to ≈4 standard deviations of background. Its mean value is 2262 MeV/c2, width of the bin containing signal is 20 MeV/c2. On the basis of this signal we determine the value of cross section of Λ c + production times the branching ratio of its observed decay modeσ. Abstract

It is shown that in thermoactivated TGS-Cr crystals and X-irradiated pure TGS-crystals the relaxation currents are apparently connected with the relaxation of involved defects. The directional relaxation of defects in ferroelectrics might explain the long-term relaxations of self-biased fields and aging processes.

Abstract

The inclusive production of D*±(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic scattering is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. In the kinematic region 1 < Q2 < 100 GeV2 and 0.05 < y < 0.7 an e+ p cross section for inclusive D*± meson production of 8.50 ± 0.42(stat.)+1.21-1.00 (syst.) nb is measured in the visible range PtD* > 1.5 GeV and ηD*< 1.5. Single and double differential inclusive D*± meson cross sections are compared to perturbative QCD calculations in two different evolution schemes. The charm contribution to the proton structure, FC2(X, Q2), is determined by extrapolating the visible charm cross section to the full phase space. This contribution is found to rise from about 10% at Q2 = 1.5 GeV2 to more than 25% at Q2 = 60 GeV2 corresponding to x values ranging from 5 × 10-5 to 3 × 10-3. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

It is shown that in polar dielectrics any process of relaxation to thermodynamic equilibrium leads to directional charge transfer along the polar direction. Correspondingly, in a nonequilibrium ferroelectric crystal the relaxation of excited defects to equilibrium should be accompanied by a macroscopic relaxation current along the polar axis.

Abstract

Results on diffractive photoproduction of psi(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb(-1). The energy dependence of the diffractive psi(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/psi mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative psi(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as e(bt), yields b(el)(psi(2S)) = (4.31 +/- 0.57 +/- 0.46) GeV-2, compatible with that of the J/psi. For the proton dissociative channel the result b(pd)(psi(2S)) = (0.59 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.12) GeV-2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/psi. Abstract

The first observation of open b production in ep collisions is reported. An event sample containing muons and jets has been selected which is enriched in semileptonic b quark decays. The visible cross section \sigma(ep -> b \bar{b}X -> \mu X') for Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, 0.1 < y < 0.8 is measured to be 0.176+-0.016(stat.)+0.026-0.017(syst.) nb for the muons to be detected in the range 35 deg < \theta^\mu < 130 deg and \pt^\mu > 2.0 GeV in the laboratory frame. The expected visible cross section based on a NLO QCD calculation is 0.104+-0.017 nb. The cross sections for electroproduction with Q^2 e b\bar{b}X) = 7.1+-0.6(stat.)+1.5-1.3(syst.) nb and \sigma(\gamma p-> b\bar{b} X) = 111+-10(stat.)+23-20(syst.) at an average \sim 180 GeV, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 0 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B
