1. The value of augmentative and alternative communication strategies for adults with Broca's aphasia: a narrative literature review

Abstract

Introduction: People with Broca’s aphasia have the right to language recovery and to communicate effectively. No literature review was found about the specific value of augmentative and alternative communication strategies to adults with Broca's aphasia. Aims: To explore current knowledge and update the understanding of the usefulness of augmentative and alternative communication strategies for adults with Broca’s aphasia. Material and method: A narrative literature review was developed based on the research question: What is the usefulness of augmentative and alternative communication for adults with Broca's aphasia? The research was carried out in the CINAHL and MEDLINE databases between January 8 and 21, 2021. Results: 16 articles were included, published between 2011 and 2020. Specific augmentative and alternative communication approaches (no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech), advantages, and factors that influence the effectiveness of this communication support were also identified. This review evidence that augmentative and alternative communication (mainly high-tech) is efficient in optimizing communication and in the language recovery of people with Broca’s aphasia. Conclusions: Augmentative and alternative communication should be employed in adults with Boca’s aphasia with two main aims: compensatory and restorative. High-technology strategies have a particularly positive impact.

Abstract

We have developed a CAL package for teaching breast cancer genetics to clinical medical students. Its aim is to explain the principles of genetic predisposition to breast cancer, the association with other cancers, the principles of family history taking and confirmation, risk assessment and possible interventions. Fourth-year clinical medical students from Aberdeen University were randomised to either conventional teaching or CAL. Forty-eight students attended the evaluation session. Students randomised to conventional teaching participated in a 20 minute mini-lecture (with opportunities for questions) led by one of two clinicians. Those students randomised to CAL completed the CAL package with technical — but not academic — support available. Aims and objectives of the mini-lecture were the same as those of the CAL package, both tutors used the same teaching material. At the end of the intervention both groups of students completed a short written assessment comprising: 1. Likert scales asking students to rate how enjoyable, useful, interesting and well explained the subject matter was, and ease of use of the computing software and hardware. 2. MEQ and MCQ questions assessing knowledge and understanding of breast cancer genetics. There was no significant difference between the CAL and mini-lecture groups in terms of marks or acceptability. Thus CAL is an acceptable and effective method of teaching breast cancer genetics to clinical medical students. It can be run across suitable networks or on stand alone PCs. Although time consuming to develop, the CAL could be used in a variety of settings to increase curriculum flexibility. Methods of motivating students to complete the CAL, and of providing educational support are being explored. If there is sufficient demand the CAL package will be made generally available on CD-ROM. 5. The challenges of nursing information systems: a narrative review of the literature.

Abstract

Nursing information systems, where quality indicators are integrated, focus on the standardization of health records and the consequent visibility of the provided care. Despite the acknowledged importance of the contributions of information systems, their implementation has been characterized by several challenges, so we propose to reflect on them. To identify the evidence available in the literature on these same challenges, a narrative review of the literature was developed, with the analysis of relevant articles and reports on this issue. It is clear in the literature the importance of information systems for obtaining quality indicators that are sensitive to nursing care, with a positive impact on the quality of care, allowing for measurable quality in interventions, as well as facilitating inter and intra-institutional comparability, in real-time or in a retrospective analysis. The challenges encountered and which urgently needs to be resolved in clinical practice are related to the difficulty for professionals to perceive the impact of computer records, the visibility of nursing indicators and the time that is allocated in the context of providing care to carry out these records.

Abstract

Digital moving images (AVI format), were integrated into a specific computer-assisted learning (CAL) application, providing a highly visual and interactive self-learning tool in an area of the medical curriculum which is difficult to teach by traditional methods. This paper outlines the process used to obtain the digital video using relatively inexpensive equipment and the subsequent delivery over a university network without resorting to major upgrading of the network specifications.
