Abstract

Abstract Adopting the Standard Halo Model (SHM) of an isotropic Maxwellian velocity distribution for dark matter (DM) particles in the Galaxy, the most stringent current constraints on their spin-dependent scattering cross-section with nucleons come from the IceCube neutrino observatory and the PICO-60 $$\hbox {C}_3\hbox {F}_8$$ C 3 F 8 superheated bubble chamber experiments. The former is sensitive to high energy neutrinos from the self-annihilation of DM particles captured in the Sun, while the latter looks for nuclear recoil events from DM scattering off nucleons. Although slower DM particles are more likely to be captured by the Sun, the faster ones are more likely to be detected by PICO. Recent N-body simulations suggest significant deviations from the SHM for the smooth halo component of the DM, while observations hint at a dominant fraction of the local DM being in substructures. We use the method of Ferrer et al. (JCAP 1509: 052, 2015) to exploit the complementarity between the two approaches and derive conservative constraints on DM-nucleon scattering. Our results constrain $$\sigma _{\mathrm{SD}} \lesssim 3 \times 10^{-39} \mathrm {cm}^2$$ σ SD ≲ 3 × 10 - 39 cm 2 ( $$6 \times 10^{-38} \mathrm {cm}^2$$ 6 × 10 - 38 cm 2 ) at $$\gtrsim 90\%$$ ≳ 90 % C.L. for a DM particle of mass 1 TeV annihilating into $$\tau ^+ \tau ^-$$ τ + τ - ( $$b\bar{b}$$ b b ¯ ) with a local density of $$\rho _{\mathrm{DM}} = 0.3~\mathrm {GeV/cm}^3$$ ρ DM = 0.3 GeV / cm 3 . The constraints scale inversely with $$\rho _{\mathrm{DM}}$$ ρ DM and are independent of the DM velocity distribution.

Abstract

Abstract In the framework of the search for dark matter in the form of WIMPs using superheated liquids, a study is conducted to establish a computational procedure aimed at determining how the thermodynamic conditions kept inside a particle detector affect the acoustic signal produced by bubble nucleation. It is found that the acoustic energy injected into the liquid by the growing vapour bubble increases as the liquid pressure is decreased and the superheat degree is increased, the former effect being crucial for the generation of a well-intelligible signal. A good agreement is met between the results of the present study and some experimental data available in the literature for the amplitude of the acoustic signal. Additionally, the higher loudness of the alpha-decay events compared with those arising from neutron-induced nuclear recoils is described in terms of multiple nucleations.

Abstract

Abstract One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with $$3.5\sigma $$ 3.5σ statistical significance. The detector angular resolution for downward-going muons is $$0.73^{\circ }\pm 0.14^{\circ }.$$ 0.73∘±0.14∘. The resulting pointing performance is consistent with the expectations. An independent check of the telescope pointing accuracy is realised with the data collected by a shower array detector onboard of a ship temporarily moving around the ANTARES location.

Abstract

Abstract Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Abstract

Abstract Advanced LIGO detected a significant gravitational wave signal (GW170104) originating from the coalescence of two black holes during the second observation run on January 4th, 2017. An all-sky high-energy neutrino follow-up search has been made using data from the Antares neutrino telescope, including both upgoing and downgoing events in two separate analyses. No neutrino candidates were found within $$\pm 500$$ ± 500 s around the GW event time nor any time clustering of events over an extended time window of $$\pm 3$$ ± 3 months. The non-detection is used to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW170104 to less than $$\sim {1.2}\times 10^{{55}}$$ ∼ 1.2 × 10 55 erg for a $$E^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum. This constraint is valid in the energy range corresponding to the 5–95% quantiles of the neutrino flux [3.2 TeV; 3.6 PeV], if the GW emitter was below the Antares horizon at the alert time.

Abstract

Abstract The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the “geyser technique”, a variant of the superheated liquid technique of extreme simplicity. Operating principles of the new dark matter detector and technical solutions of the device are reported in detail. First results obtained in a series of test runs taken in laboratory demonstrate that we have successfully built and tested a geyser-concept bubble chamber that can be used in particle physics, especially in dark matter searches, and that we are ready to move underground for extensive data taking.

Abstract

Abstract A search for magnetic monopoles using five years of data recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope from January 2008 to December 2012 with a total live time of 1121 days is presented. The analysis is carried out in the range β > 0.6 of magnetic monopole velocities using a strategy based on run-by-run Monte Carlo simulations. No signal above the background expectation from atmospheric muons and atmospheric neutrinos is observed, and upper limits are set on the magnetic monopole flux ranging from 5.7 × 10−16 to 1.5 × 10−18 cm−2·s−1·sr−1.

Abstract

Abstract A novel algorithm to reconstruct neutrino-induced particle showers within the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. The method achieves a median angular resolution of $$6^\circ $$ 6 ∘ for shower energies below 100 TeV. Applying this algorithm to 6 years of data taken with the ANTARES detector, 8 events with reconstructed shower energies above 10 TeV are observed. This is consistent with the expectation of about 5 events from atmospheric backgrounds, but also compatible with diffuse astrophysical flux measurements by the IceCube collaboration, from which 2–4 additional events are expected. A $$90\%$$ 90 % C.L. upper limit on the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux with a value per neutrino flavour of $$\text {E}^2\cdot \Phi ^{90\%} = 4.9 \cdot 10^{-8}\,\mathrm {GeV} \cdot \mathrm {cm^{-2} \cdot s^{-1}\cdot sr^{-1}}$$ E 2 · Φ 90 % = 4.9 · 10 - 8 GeV · cm - 2 · s - 1 · sr - 1 is set, applicable to the energy range from 23 TeV to 7.8 PeV, assuming an unbroken $$\text {E}^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum and neutrino flavour equipartition at Earth.

Abstract

Using data recorded with the ANTARES telescope from 2007 to 2015, a new search for dark matter annihilation in the Milky Way has been performed. Three halo models and five annihilation channels, WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W−,τ+τ−,μ+μ− and νν¯, with WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeVc2 to 100 TeVc2, were considered. No excess over the expected background was found, and limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross-section were set.

Abstract

A highly significant excess of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos has been reported by the IceCube Collaboration. Some features of the energy and declination distributions of IceCube events hint at a North/South asymmetry of the neutrino flux. This could be due to the presence of the bulk of our Galaxy in the Southern hemisphere. The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located in the Mediterranean Sea, has been taking data since 2007. It offers the best sensitivity to muon neutrinos produced by galactic cosmic ray interactions in this region of the sky. In this letter a search for an extended neutrino flux from the Galactic Ridge region is presented. Different models of neutrino production by cosmic ray propagation are tested. No excess of events is observed and upper limits for different neutrino flux spectral indices Γ are set. For Γ=2.4 the 90% confidence level flux upper limit at 100 TeV for one neutrino flavour corresponds to Φ01f(100 TeV)=2.0⋅10−17 GeV−1cm−2s−1sr−1. Under this assumption, at most two events of the IceCube cosmic candidates can originate from the Galactic Ridge. A simple power-law extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT flux to account for IceCube High Energy Starting Events is excluded at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

A search for muon neutrinos originating from dark matter annihilations in the Sun is performed using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2012. In order to obtain the best possible sensitivities to dark matter signals, an optimisation of the event selection criteria is performed taking into account the background of atmospheric muons, atmospheric neutrinos and the energy spectra of the expected neutrino signals. No significant excess over the background is observed and 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino flux, the spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections are derived for WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeV to 5 TeV for the annihilation channels WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W− and τ+τ−.

Abstract

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the A ntares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes.

Abstract

Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Abstract

New results are reported from the operation of the PICO-60 dark matter detector, a bubble chamber filled with 52 kg of C$_3$F$_8$ located in the SNOLAB underground laboratory. As in previous PICO bubble chambers, PICO-60 C$_3$F$_8$ exhibits excellent electron recoil and alpha decay rejection, and the observed multiple-scattering neutron rate indicates a single-scatter neutron background of less than 1 event per month. A blind analysis of an efficiency-corrected 1167-kg-day exposure at a 3.3-keV thermodynamic threshold reveals no single-scattering nuclear recoil candidates, consistent with the predicted background. These results set the most stringent direct-detection constraint to date on the WIMP-proton spin-dependent cross section at 3.4 $\times$ 10$^{-41}$ cm$^2$ for a 30-GeV$\thinspace$c$^{-2}$ WIMP, more than one order of magnitude improvement from previous PICO results., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

COUPP (Chicagoland Observatory for Underground Particle Physics) is an experiment with bubble chambers able to detect dark matter directly either with Spin-Dependent or with Spin-Independent interactions. The target material is a superheated liquid (usually CF3I) that can be bubble nucleated due to nuclear recoils produced by elastic collisions of dark matter particles. The bubble growth inside the chamber is accompanied with an acoustic signature. The acoustic technique has been successfully used to have a good alpha discrimination (about 99%). In this paper, we present different studies and results related with the characterization of the acoustic properties of the detector and the different phenomena involved in the acoustic measurements of the bubble growth, such as sound generation, sound transmission and optimization of piezoelectric transducers.

Abstract

Some Methods of analysis for the anions chloride, nitrite, nitrate and sulphate by means of the ion-exchange liquid chromatography technique are optimized. These methods use a single column and refractive index and ultraviolet detectors. A new method for the analysis of these inorganic anions is presented. We have applied it to river water analysis with a very high sensitivity (less than 1 ppb for nitrite and few ppb for nitrate and chloride).

Abstract

La finalitat d'aquest treball ha estat l'estudi i caracterització dels components inorgànics de l'aerosol en una àrea urbana que ha estat la de Sant Adrià de Besòs.Hom ha procedit a posar a punt un mètode analític per cromatografia liquida de bescanvi iònic per tal de poder determinar els anions inorgànics presents a l'atmosfera.Aquest mètode utilitza només una columna separadora de bescanvi iònic i detector ultraviolat, i permet determinar simultàniament els anions clorur, bromur nitrito i nitrat per fotometria directa, i clorur, nitrat i sulfat per fotometria indirecta, i arribar a límits de detecció entre 1 i 5 ppb, excepte per al sulfat, que té un límit de detecció de 100 ppb. El desenvolupament del mètode analític conté la comparació entre diverses columnes, diversos eluents i diferents tipus de detecció ultraviolada i l'estudi de la linealitat, la desviació estàndard i la sensibilitat del mètode. Aquest mètode permet determinar els anions majoritaris i minoritaris de l'aerosol utilitzant els dos tipus de fotometria directa i indirecta, ja que ambdós mètodes són perfectament compatibles.Un cop optimitzat el mètode analític per a la determinación dels anions inorgànics, s'ha palesat la possibilitat de determinar els metalls per espectroscòpia d'emissió per plasma. Com que aquest mètode és prou conegut per a la determinació de metalls, només s'ha comprovat la no existència d'interferències i la linealitat de les rectes dins del rang de concentració en què es troben els metalls a l'atmosfera. Els metalls analitzats han estat: Zn, Pb, Ni, Mn, Fe, V, Ca i Al. Aquests metalls són elements traçadors de fonts emissores contaminants. El mètode permet arribar a límits de detecció entre 1 i 10 ppb, la qual cosa fa que sigui una tècnica adequada per a aquest tipus d'estudi.Seguidament hom ha procedit a la comparació de diferents tipus de filtres i captadors per optimitzar la presa de mostres tenint en compte les espècies que cal estudiar. El mètode de captació utilitzat ha estat amb captadors d'alt volum Sierra Misco i filtres de membrana Millipore de 20 x 25 cm.L'etapa següent ha estat l'extracció de les partícules del filtre comparant-la amb mètodes estàndard. El procediment més adequat per a l'extracció de metalls de les partícules dels filtres resulta ser la digestió àcida amb àcid clorhídric i nítric durant dues hores. Per a l'extracció dels anions hom ha utilitzat aigua en ebullició durant mitja hora. La recuperació de les espècies presents en forma de partícules ve reforçada per l'homogeneïtat trobada al filtre.Hom ha realitzat l'anàlisi de partícules atmosfèriques a Sant Adrià de Besòs durant vuit setmanes, repartides en les quatre estacions de l'any.Un cop obtingudes les matrius de dades per a les vuit setmanes, s'ha aplicat l'anàlisi factorial com a model de receptor per a l'anàlisi quimiomètrica dels resultats de les mostres de Sant Adrià de Besòs durant el període de juny de 1986 a abril de 1987. Això s'ha fet per tal de conèixer les fonts contaminants i els percentatges de col·laboració de cada una de les fonts. Hem trobat sis fonts contaminants emissores: el sòl, el tràfic, el nitrat i el sulfat, el gas-oil, l'aerosol marí i les emissions d'aceries o d'incineradors.Com que un dels problemes més importants en la captació d'anions inorgànics és la formació d'artefactes, s'han comparat dos tipus de presa de mostres, amb i sense separació prèvia dels gasos presents a l'atmosfera.Aquest estudi ha estat realitzat al Departament de Química Inorgànica de la Universitat de Dortmund, ja que aquí no era possible d'aconseguir l'equip adient. Hem constatat diferències en els valors obtinguts durant la captació de clorurs i nitrats causats per la formació d'artefactes, pèrdues per volatilitat o col·lapsament del filtre. S'ha comprovat que la tècnica dels separadors de gasos o "denuders" permet assegurar valors fiables per al contingut d'aquests dos anions a les partícules. El contingut de sulfats no presentava diferències amb el mètode de captación sense "denuders" amb filtres Nucleopore. S'ha verificat també la formació d'artefactes de sulfit.Finalment s'ha aplicat el mètode optimitzat de l'anàlisi dels anions inorgànics a la deteminació d'anions separats en un impactador en cascada de baix volum, el qual necessita d'una anàlisi molt sensible per als components minoritaris de l'aerosol. Aquesta presa de mostres amb impactador en cascada també ha estat realitzada a Dortmund. Hom ha verificat que els anions bromur, nitrat I sulfat es troben principalment a la fracció més fina de l'aerosol mentre que el clorur presenta diferències., The purpose of this work is to study and characterize the inorganic components of the aerosols in a built-up urban area that of Sant Adrià de Besòs.Determination of the inorganic anions chloride, bromide, nitrate and sulphate was undertaken by using the ion exchange liquid chromatography technique, which was optimized .in our laboratory. The detection method used was that of the ultraviolet, using bath direct and indirect photometry.Determination of the metals Zn, Pb, Ni, Mn, Fe, V, Ca and Al was carried out with inductively coupled plasma.We optimized the sampling technique by varying different kinds of filters and samplers. We also optimized the extraction of anions and metals from the particles in the filters.The next step was to analyse the atmospheric particles in Sant Adrià de Besòs over a period of eight weeks. The data obtained was treated by using factor analysis in order to ascertain pollutant sources, which were: soil (Mn, Ca, Al and Fe), traffic (Pb and Br), gases (nitrate and sulphate), fuel oil (Ni and V), marine aerosol (CI) and emissions from incinerator plants or steelworks (Zn).We have compared sampling methods with and without prior separation of gases present in the atmosphere in order to ascertain the variations that the particles undergo during their sampling.The optimization of the analytical method for determining inorganic anions has been applied to the determination of these anions in particles sampled in a cascade impactor.

Els alumnes i les alumnes de primer cicle d'ESO s'enfronten amb les dificultats de la nova etapa i la necessitat de demostrar les seves competències lingüístiques, quant al redactat i la correcció en l'elaboració de textos diversos. Les noves tecnologies de la informació i la comunicació poden ajudar (i han de propiciar-ho) a desenvolupar aquestes capacitats, i han de ser un element motivador perquè els nois i les noies sentin la necessitat de crear produccions escrites pròpies, adequades lingüísticament, coherents i amb les idees ben organitzades. És necessari, a més, que l'avaluació d'aquestes tasques els serveixi per millorar l'expressió en llengua catalana, gramaticalment i ortogràficament, tot ajudant-los a establir sistemes d'autocorrecció i rectificació d'errors. L'exposició pública (en un mitjà com el d'internet) de les seves obres hauria de reblar l'aspecte de la motivació en la creació d'escrits, de manera que els aporti noves expectatives de comunicació i els animi a participar de l'espai virtual que els ofereix aquesta finestra oberta al món. El meu treball té la intenció de ser un projecte educatiu per aconseguir una millora en l'expressió escrita dels alumnes del primer curs d'ESO amb l'ajuda de les eines de les Tecnologies de la Informació i la Comunicació. Los alumnos y alumnas de primer ciclo de ESO se enfrentan con las dificultades de la nueva etapa y la necesidad de demostrar sus competencias lingüísticas, en cuanto al redactado y la corrección en la elaboración de textos diversos. Las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación pueden ayudar (y deben propiciar) el desarrollo de estas capacidades, y deben ser un elemento motivador para que los chicos y las chicas sientan la necesidad de crear producciones escritas propias, adecuadas lingüísticamente, coherentes y con las ideas bien organizadas. Es necesario, además, que la evaluación de estas tareas les sirva para mejorar la expresión en lengua catalana, gramaticalmente y ortográficamente, ayudándolos a establecer sistemas de autocorrección y rectificación de errores. La exposición pública (en un medio como el de internet) de sus obras debería remachar el aspecto de la motivación en la creación de escritos, de manera que les aporte nuevas expectativas de comunicación y los anime a participar del espacio virtual que les ofrece esta ventana abierta al mundo. Mi trabajo tiene la intención de ser un proyecto educativo para conseguir una mejora en la expresión escrita de los alumnos del primer curso de ESO con la ayuda de las herramientas de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación. The students of first cycle of ESO face the difficulties of the new stage and the need to demonstrate their linguistic competence in terms of style and grammar for the development of different kind of texts. The new information and communication technologies can help (and should encourage) the development of these capabilities, and should be motivating for boys and girls to feel the need to create their own written productions, linguistically appropriate, consistent and well-organized. It is also necessary that the assessment of these tasks will serve to improve their expression in Catalan, grammar and spelling, helping to establish self-correction systems and error checking and correction. Public exposure (in a medium like the Net) of their essays should round off the issue of writing motivation, so that provides those new expectations for communication and encourage them to participate in the virtual space offered by this window, open to the world. My paper is intended as an educational project to improve the writing skills of first year students that with the help of the tools of Information and Communication Technologies.

21. Signal Processing for Parametric Acoustic Sources Applied to Underwater Communication.

Abstract

For years, in the field of underwater acoustics, a line of research with special relevance for applications of environmental monitoring and maritime security has been developed that explores the possibilities of non-linear phenomena of sound propagation, especially referring to the so-called parametric effect or self-modulation. This article shows the results of using a new modulation technique based on sine-sweep signals, compared to classical modulations (FSK and PSK). For each of these modulations, a series of 16-bit strings of information with different frequencies and durations have been performed, with the same 200 kHz carrier wave. All of them have been tested in the Hydroacoustic Laboratory of the CTN and, through the application of cross-correlation processing, the limitations and improvements of this novel processing technique have been evaluated. This allows reaching better limits in discrimination of bits and signal-to-noise ratio used in underwater parametric acoustic communications.

22. Bragg Peak Localization with Piezoelectric Sensors for Proton Therapy Treatment.

Abstract

A full chain simulation of the acoustic hadrontherapy monitoring for brain tumours is presented in this work. For the study, a proton beam of 100 MeV is considered. In the first stage, Geant4 is used to simulate the energy deposition and to study the behaviour of the Bragg peak. The energy deposition in the medium produces local heating that can be considered instantaneous with respect to the hydrodynamic time scale producing a sound pressure wave. The resulting thermoacoustic signal has been subsequently obtained by solving the thermoacoustic equation. The acoustic propagation has been simulated by FEM methods in the brain and the skull, where a set of piezoelectric sensors are placed. Last, the final received signals in the sensors have been processed in order to reconstruct the position of the thermal source and, thus, to determine the feasibility and accuracy of acoustic beam monitoring in hadrontherapy.

Hadrontherapy makes it possible to deliver high doses of energy to cancerous tumors by using the large energy deposition in the Bragg-peak. However, uncertainties in the patient positioning and/or in the anatomical parameters can cause distortions in the calculation of the dose distribution. In order to maximize the effectiveness of heavy particle treatments, an accurate monitoring system of the deposited dose depending on the energy, beam time, and spot size is necessary. The localized deposition of this energy leads to the generation of a thermoacoustic pulse that can be detected using acoustic technologies. This article presents different experimental and simulation studies of the acoustic localization of thermoacoustic pulses captured with a set of sensors around the sample. In addition, numerical simulations have been done where thermo-acoustic pulses are emitted for the specific case of a proton beam of 100 MeV.

Abstract

This paper presents a study of different types of parametric signals with application to underwater acoustic communications. In all the signals, the carrier frequency is 200 kHz, which corresponds to the resonance frequency of the transducer under study and different modulations are presented and compared. In this sense, we study modulations with parametric sine sweeps (4 to 40 kHz) that represent binary codes (zeros and ones), getting closer to the application in acoustic communications. The different properties of the transmitting signals in terms of bit rate reconstruction, directivity, efficiency, and power needed are discussed as well.

Abstract

New results are reported from the operation of the PICO-60 dark matter detector, a bubble chamber filled with 52 kg of C&#95;{3}F&#95;{8} located in the SNOLAB underground laboratory. As in previous PICO bubble chambers, PICO-60 C&#95;{3}F&#95;{8} exhibits excellent electron recoil and alpha decay rejection, and the observed multiple-scattering neutron rate indicates a single-scatter neutron background of less than one event per month. A blind analysis of an efficiency-corrected 1167-kg day exposure at a 3.3-keV thermodynamic threshold reveals no single-scattering nuclear recoil candidates, consistent with the predicted background. These results set the most stringent direct-detection constraint to date on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton spin-dependent cross section at 3.4×10^{-41}  cm^{2} for a 30-GeV c^{-2} WIMP, more than 1 order of magnitude improvement from previous PICO results.

Abstract

Despite dedicated research has been carried out to adequately map the distribution of the sperm whale in the Mediterranean Sea, unlike other regions of the world, the species population status is still presently uncertain. The analysis of two years of continuous acoustic data provided by the ANTARES neutrino telescope revealed the year-round presence of sperm whales in the Ligurian Sea, probably associated with the availability of cephalopods in the region. The presence of the Ligurian Sea sperm whales was demonstrated through the real-time analysis of audio data streamed from a cabled-to-shore deep-sea observatory that allowed the hourly tracking of their long-range echolocation behaviour on the Internet. Interestingly, the same acoustic analysis indicated that the occurrence of surface shipping noise would apparently not condition the foraging behaviour of the sperm whale in the area, since shipping noise was almost always present when sperm whales were acoustically detected. The continuous presence of the sperm whale in the region confirms the ecological value of the Ligurian sea and the importance of ANTARES to help monitoring its ecosystems.

27. Transducer Development and Characterization for Underwater Acoustic Neutrino Detection Calibration.

Abstract

A short bipolar pressure pulse with "pancake" directivity is produced and propagated when an Ultra-High Energy (UHE) neutrino interacts with a nucleus in water. Nowadays, acoustic sensor networks are being deployed in deep seas to detect this phenomenon as a first step toward building a neutrino telescope. In order to study the feasibility of the method, it is critical to have a calibrator that is able to mimic the neutrino signature. In previous works the possibility of using the acoustic parametric technique for this aim was proven. In this study, the array is operated at a high frequency and, by means of the parametric effect, the emission of the low-frequency acoustic bipolar pulse is generated mimicking the UHE neutrino acoustic pulse. To this end, the development of the transducer to be used in the parametric array is described in all its phases. The transducer design process, the characterization tests for the bare piezoelectric ceramic, and the addition of backing and matching layers are presented. The efficiencies and directivity patterns obtained for both primary and parametric beams confirm that the design of the proposed calibrator meets all the requirements for the emitter.

28. Acoustic Sensor Design for Dark Matter Bubble Chamber Detectors.

Abstract

Dark matter bubble chamber detectors use piezoelectric sensors in order to detect and discriminate the acoustic signals emitted by the bubbles grown within the superheated fluid from a nuclear recoil produced by a particle interaction. These sensors are attached to the outside walls of the vessel containing the fluid. The acoustic discrimination depends strongly on the properties of the sensor attached to the outer wall of the vessel that has to meet the requirements of radiopurity and size. With the aim of optimizing the sensor system, a test bench for the characterization of the sensors has been developed. The sensor response for different piezoelectric materials, geometries, matching layers, and backing layers have been measured and contrasted with FEM simulations and analytical models. The results of these studies lead us to have a design criterion for the construction of specific sensors for the next generation of dark matter bubble chamber detectors (250 L).

Abstract

New data are reported from the operation of a 2 liter C3F8 bubble chamber in the SNOLAB underground laboratory, with a total exposure of 211.5 kg days at four different energy thresholds below 10 keV. These data show that C3F8 provides excellent electron-recoil and alpha rejection capabilities at very low thresholds. The chamber exhibits an electron-recoil sensitivity of <3.5×10(-10) and an alpha rejection factor of >98.2%. These data also include the first observation of a dependence of acoustic signal on alpha energy. Twelve single nuclear recoil event candidates were observed during the run. The candidate events exhibit timing characteristics that are not consistent with the hypothesis of a uniform time distribution, and no evidence for a dark matter signal is claimed. These data provide the most sensitive direct detection constraints on WIMP-proton spin-dependent scattering to date, with significant sensitivity at low WIMP masses for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering.
