We present a multifractal analysis of the long-term light curves of a small sample of type 1 active galactic nuclei: NGC 4151, Arp 102B, 3C 390.3, E1821+643 and NGC 7469. We aim to investigate how the degrees of multifractality of the continuum and Hβ line vary among the five different objects and to check whether the multifractal behaviours of the continuum and the Hβ line correlate with standard accretion parameters. The backward (θ = 0) one-dimensional multifractal detrended moving average procedure was applied to light curves covering the full observation period and partial observation periods containing an equal number of epochs for each object. We detected multifractal signatures for the continua of NGC 4151, Arp 102B and 3C 390.3 and for the Hβ lines of NGC 4151 and 3C 390.3. However, we found nearly monofractal signatures for the continua of E1821+643 and NGC 7469, as well as for the Hβ lines of Arp 102B, E1821+643 and NGC 7469. In addition, we did not find any correlations between the degree of multifractality of the Hβ line and accretion parameters, while the degree of multifractality of the continuum seems to correlate with the Eddington ratio (i.e. the smaller the ratio is, the stronger the degree of multifractality). The given method is not robust, and these results should be taken with caution. Future analysis of the sampling rate and other properties of the light curves should help with better constraining and understanding these results.

A dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators was reported almost a decade ago. According to this view only slowly spinning stars with rotation periods longer than 5-10 days would host planets with orbital periods shorter than 2 or 3 days. This Letter brings an enlarged and more detailed analysis that led us to the question: Is there really a dearth in that distribution or is it a dearth of data? For this new analysis, we combined different samples of Kepler and TESS stars with confirmed planets or planet candidates with measured stellar rotation periods, using Gaia data to perform an in-depth selection of 1013 planet-hosting main-sequence stars. With the newer, enlarged, and more refined data, the reported dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators tends to disappear, thus suggesting that it may reflect a scarcity of data in the prior analysis. A two sample statistical test strongly supports our results, showing that the distribution of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators is almost indistinguishable from that for close-in planets orbiting slow rotators., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

In this paper we report the discovery of TOI-220 $b$, a new sub-Neptune detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and confirmed by radial velocity follow-up observations with the HARPS spectrograph. Based on the combined analysis of TESS transit photometry and high precision radial velocity measurements we estimate a planetary mass of 13.8 $\pm$ 1.0 M$_{Earth}$ and radius of 3.03 $\pm$ 0.15 R$_{Earth}$, implying a bulk density of 2.73 $\pm$ 0.47 $\textrm{g cm}^{-3}$. TOI-220 $b$ orbits a relative bright (V=10.4) and old (10.1$\pm$1.4 Gyr) K dwarf star with a period of $\sim$10.69 d. Thus, TOI-220 $b$ is a new warm sub-Neptune with very precise mass and radius determinations. A Bayesian analysis of the TOI-220 $b$ internal structure indicates that due to the strong irradiation it receives, the low density of this planet could be explained with a steam atmosphere in radiative-convective equilibrium and a supercritical water layer on top of a differentiated interior made of a silicate mantle and a small iron core., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the confirmation of a new sub-Neptune close to the transition between super-Earths and sub-Neptunes transiting the M2 dwarf TOI- 269 (TIC 220479565, V = 14.4 mag, J = 10.9 mag, Rstar = 0.40 Rsun, Mstar = 0.39 Msun, d = 57 pc). The exoplanet candidate has been identified in multiple TESS sectors, and validated with high-precision spectroscopy from HARPS and ground-based photometric follow-up from ExTrA and LCO-CTIO. We determined mass, radius, and bulk density of the exoplanet by jointly modeling both photometry and radial velocities with juliet. The transiting exoplanet has an orbital period of P = 3.6977104 +- 0.0000037 days, a radius of 2.77 +- 0.12 Rearth, and a mass of 8.8 +- 1.4 Mearth. Since TOI-269 b lies among the best targets of its category for atmospheric characterization, it would be interesting to probe the atmosphere of this exoplanet with transmission spectroscopy in order to compare it to other sub-Neptunes. With an eccentricity e = 0.425+0.082-0.086, TOI-269 b has one of the highest eccentricities of the exoplanets with periods less than 10 days. The star being likely a few Gyr old, this system does not appear to be dynamically young. Aims. We study the 2D spectral line profile of HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher), measuring its variation with position across the detector and with changing line intensity. The characterization of the line profile and its variations are important for achieving the precision of the wavelength scales of 10^{-10} or 3.0 cm/s necessary to detect Earth-twins in the habitable zone around solar-like stars. Methods. We used a laser frequency comb (LFC) with unresolved and unblended lines to probe the instrument line profile. We injected the LFC light (attenuated by various neutral density filters) into both the object and the reference fibres of HARPS, and we studied the variations of the line profiles with the line intensities. We applied moment analysis to measure the line positions, widths, and skewness as well as to characterize the line profile distortions induced by the spectrograph and detectors. Based on this, we established a model to correct for point spread function distortions by tracking the beam profiles in both fibres. Results. We demonstrate that the line profile varies with the position on the detector and as a function of line intensities. This is consistent with a charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) effect on the HARPS detector. The estimate of the line position depends critically on the line profile, and therefore a change in the line amplitude effectively changes the measured position of the lines, affecting the stability of the wavelength scale of the instrument. We deduce and apply the correcting functions to re-calibrate and mitigate this effect, reducing it to a level consistent with photon noise., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted

NIRPS is a near-infrared (YJH bands), fiber-fed, high-resolution precision radial velocity (pRV) spectrograph currently under construction for deployment at the ESO 3.6-m telescope in La Silla, Chile. Through the use of a dichroic, NIRPS will be operated simultaneously with the optical HARPS pRV spectrograph and will be used to conduct ambitious planet-search and characterization surveys through a 720-night of guaranteed time allocation. NIRPS aims at detecting and characterizing Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of low-mass dwarfs and obtain high-accuracy transit spectroscopy of exoplanets. Here we present a summary of the full performances obtained in laboratory tests conducted at Universite Laval (Canada), and the first results of the on-going on-sky commissioning of the front-end. Science operations of NIRPS is expected to start in late-2020, enabling significant synergies with major space and ground instruments such as the JWST, TESS, ALMA, PLATO and the ELT.

Laser frequency combs (LFCs) are well on their way to becoming the next-generation calibration sources for precision astronomical spectroscopy. This development is considered key in the hunt for low-mass rocky exoplanets around solar-type stars whose discovery with the radial-velocity method requires cm/s Doppler precision. In order to prove such precise calibration with an LFC, it must be compared to another calibrator of at least the same precision. Being the best available spectrograph calibrator, this means comparing it to a second - fully independent - LFC. This test had long been pending, but our installation of two LFCs at the ultra-stable spectrograph HARPS presented the so far unique opportunity for simultaneous calibrations with two separate LFCs. The presence of multifractality in a time series shows different correlations for different time scales as well as intermittent behaviour that cannot be captured by a single scaling exponent. The identification of a multifractal nature allows for a characterization of the dynamics and of the intermittency of the fluctuations in non-linear and complex systems. In this study, we search for a possible multifractal structure (multifractality signature) of the flux variability in the quasar 3C 273 time series for all electromagnetic wavebands at different observation points, and the origins for the observed multifractality. This study is intended to highlight how the scaling behaves across the different bands of the selected candidate which can be used as an additional new technique to group quasars based on the fractal signature observed in their time series and determine whether quasars are non-linear physical systems or not. The Multifractal Detrended Moving Average algorithm (MFDMA) has been used to study the scaling in non-linear, complex and dynamic systems. To achieve this goal, we applied the backward ({\theta} = 0) MFDMA method for one-dimensional signals. We observe weak multifractal (close to monofractal) behaviour in some of the time series of our candidate except in the mm, UV and X-ray bands. Stellar rotation is a fundamental observable that drives different aspects of stellar and planetary evolution. In this work, we present an unprecedented manifold analysis of 160 B-type stars with light curves collected by the TESS space mission using three different procedures (Fast Fourier Transform, Lomb-Scargle, and wavelet techniques), accompanied by rigorous visual inspection in the search for rotation periodicities. This effort provides rotational periodicities for 6 new TESS B-type stars and confirmed periodicities for 22 targets with rotation periods previously listed in the literature. For other 61 stars, already classified as possible rotational variables, we identify noisy, pulsational, binarity, or ambiguous variability behavior rather than rotation signatures. The total sample of 28 potential rotators shows an overlap of different classes of rotational variables, composed of $\alpha^2$ Canum Venaticorum, rotating ellipsoidal and SX Arietis stars. The combination of the three techniques applied in our analysis offers a solid path to overcome the challenges in the discrimination of rotation from other variabilities in stellar light curves, such as pulsation, binarity or other effects that have no physical meaning. High extinction and crowding create a natural limitation for optical surveys towards the central regions of the Milky Way, where the gas and dust are mainly confined. Large-scale near-infrared (IR) surveys of the Galactic plane and bulge are a good opportunity to explore open scientific questions as well as to test our capability to explore future data sets efficiently. Thanks to the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO public survey, it is now possible to explore a large number of objects in those regions. This paper addresses the variability analysis of all VVV point sources having more than 10 observations in VVVDR4 using a novel approach. In total, the near-IR light curves of 288 378 769 sources were analysed using methods developed in the New Insight Into Time Series Analysis project. As a result, we present a complete sample having 44 998 752 variable star candidates (VVV-CVSC), which include accurate individual coordinates, near-IR magnitudes (Z,Y,J, and Hs), extinctions A(Ks), variability indices, periods, amplitudes, among other parameters to assess the science. Unfortunately, a side effect of having a highly complete sample, is also having a high level of contamination by non-variable (contamination ratio of non-variables to variables is slightly over 10:1). To deal with this, we also provide some flags and parameters that can be used by the community to decrease the number of variable candidates without heavily decreasing the completeness of the sample. In particular, we cross-identified 339 601 of our sources with Simbad and AAVSO data bases, which provide us with information for these objects at other wavelengths. This subsample constitutes a unique resource to study the corresponding near-IR variability of known sources as well as to assess the IR variability related with X-ray and gamma-ray sources. On the other hand, the other ${\sim }99.5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ sources in our sample constitutes a number of potentially new objects with variability information for the heavily crowded and reddened regions of the Galactic plane and bulge. The present results also provide an important queryable resource to perform variability analysis and to characterize ongoing and future surveys like TESS and LSST.

We report the discovery of a new planetary system with three transiting planets, one super-Earth and two sub-Neptunes, that orbit EPIC\,249893012, a G8\,IV-V evolved star ($M_\star$\,=\,1.05\,$\pm$\,0.05\,$M_\odot$, $R_\star$\,=\,1.71\,$\pm$\,0.04\,$R_\odot$, $T_\mathrm{eff}$\,=5430\,$\pm$\,85\,K). The star is just leaving the main sequence. We combined \ktwo \ photometry with IRCS adaptive-optics imaging and HARPS, HARPS-N, and CARMENES high-precision radial velocity measurements to confirm the planetary system, determine the stellar parameters, and measure radii, masses, and densities of the three planets. With an orbital period of $3.5949^{+0.0007}_{-0.0007}$ days, a mass of $8.75^{+1.09}_{-1.08}\ M_{\oplus}$ , and a radius of $1.95^{+0.09}_{-0.08}\ R_{\oplus}$, the inner planet b is compatible with nickel-iron core and a silicate mantle ($\rho_b= 6.39^{+1.19}_{-1.04}$ g cm$^{-3}$). Planets c and d with orbital periods of $15.624^{+0.001}_{-0.001}$ and $35.747^{+0.005}_{-0.005}$ days, respectively, have masses and radii of $14.67^{+1,84}_{-1.89}\ M_{\oplus}$ and $3.67^{+0.17}_{-0.14}\ R_{\oplus}$ and $10.18^{+2.46}_{-2.42}\ M_{\oplus}$ and $3.94^{+0.13}_{-0.12}\ R_{\oplus}$, respectively, yielding a mean density of $1.62^{+0.30}_{-0.29}$ and $0.91^{+0.25}_{-0.23}$ g cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The radius of planet b lies in the transition region between rocky and gaseous planets, but its density is consistent with a rocky composition. Its semimajor axis and the corresponding photoevaporation levels to which the planet has been exposed might explain its measured density today. In contrast, the densities and semimajor axes of planets c and d suggest a very thick atmosphere. The singularity of this system, which orbits a slightly evolved star that is just leaving the main sequence, makes it a good candidate for a deeper study from a dynamical point of view., Comment: Accepted for publication in A\& A

Variations in scaling behavior in the flux and emissions of distant astronomical sources with respect to their cosmic time are important l phenomena that can provide valuable information about the dynamics within the sources and their cosmological evolution with time. Different studies have been applying linear analysis to understand and model quasars' light curves. Here, we study the multifractal behavior of selected quasars' radio emissions in their observed frame (at 22 and 37 GHz bands) and and their rest frame. To this end, we apply the wavelet transform-based multifractal analysis formalism called wavelet transform modulus maxima. In addition, we verify whether the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models fit our data or not. In our work, we observe strong multifractal behavior for all the sources. Additionally, we find that the degree of multifractality is strongly similar for each source and significantly different between sources at 22 and 37 GHz. This similarity implies that the two frequencies have the same radiation region and mechanism, whereas the difference indicates that the sources have intrinsically different dynamics. Furthermore, we show that the degree of multifractality is the same in the observed and rest frames of the quasars, i.e., multifractality is an intrinsic property of radio quasars. Finally, we show that the ARIMA models fit the 3C 345 quasar at 22 GHz and partially fit most of the time series with the exception of the 3C 273 and 3C 279 quasars at 37 GHz, for which the models are found to be inadequate., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Knowledge about how the nonlinear behaviour of the intrinsic signal from lensed background sources changes on its path to the observer provides much information, particularly about the matter distribution in lensing galaxies and the physical properties of the current universe, in general. Here, we analyse the multifractal (nonlinear) behaviour of the optical observations of A and B images of Q0957+561 in the $r$ and $g$ bands. AIMS: To verify the presence, or absence, of extrinsic variations in the observed signals of the quasar images and investigate whether extrinsic variations affect the multifractal behaviour of their intrinsic signals. METHOD: We apply a wavelet transform modulus maxima-based multifractality analysis approach. RESULTS: We detect strong multifractal (nonlinear) signatures in the light curves of the quasar images. The degree of multifractality for both images in the $r$ band changes over time in a non-monotonic way, possibly indicating the presence of extrinsic variabilities in the light curves of the images, i.e., the signals of the quasar images are a combination of both intrinsic and extrinsic signals. Additionally, in the r band, in periods of quiescent microlensing activity, we find that the degree of multifractality (nonlinearity) of image A is stronger than that of B, while B has a larger multifractal strength in recent epochs (from day 5564 to day 7527) when it appears to be affected by microlensing. Finally, comparing the optical bands in a period of quiescent microlensing activity, we find that the degree of multifractality is stronger in the $r$ band for both quasar images. In the absence of microlensing, the observed excesses of nonlinearity are most likely generated when the broad-line region (BLR) reprocesses the radiation from the compact sources., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, Accepted in MNRAS

This work brings a wavelet analysis for 14 Kepler white dwarf stars, in order to confirm their photometric variability behavior and to search for periodicities in these targets. From the observed Kepler light curves we obtained the wavelet local and global power spectra. Through this procedure, one can perform an analysis in time-frequency domain rich in details, and so to obtain a new perspective on the time evolution of the periodicities present in these stars. We identified a photometric variability behavior in ten white dwarfs, corresponding to period variations of ~ 2 h to 18 days: among these stars, three are new candidates and seven, earlier identified from other studies, are confirmed., 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the accuracy of spectroscopic RVs by comparing spectroscopic and astrometric RVs for stars of the Hyades open cluster. Rather accurate astrometric RVs are available for the Hyades' stars, based on Hipparcos and on the first Gaia data release. We obtained HARPS spectra for a large sample of Hyades stars, and homogeneously analysed them. After cleaning the sample from binaries, RV variables, and outliers, 71 stars remained. The distribution of the observed RV difference (spectroscopic -- astrometric) is skewed and depends on the star right ascension. This is consistent with the Hyades cluster rotating at 42.3 +/- 10 m/s/pc. The two Hyades giants in the sample show, as predicted by gravitational redshift (GR), a spectroscopic RV that is blue-shifted with respect to the dwarfs, and the empirical GR slope is of 626 +/- 131 m/s, in agreement with the theoretical prediction. The difference between spectroscopic and astrometric RVs is very close to zero, within the uncertainties. In particular, the mean difference is of -33 m/s and the median is of -16 m/s when considering the Gaia-based RVs (corrected for cluster rotation), with a sigma of 347 m/s, very close to the expected cluster velocity dispersion. We also determine a new value of the cluster centroid spectroscopic RV: 39.36 +/- 0.26 km/s. The spectroscopic RV measurements are expected, from simulations, to depend on stellar rotation, but our data do not confirm these predictions. We finally discuss other phenomena that can influence the RV difference, such as cluster expansion, stellar activity, general relativity, and Galactic potential. Detecting exoplanets in clusters of different ages is a powerful tool for understanding a number of open questions, such as how the occurrence rate of planets depends on stellar metallicity, on mass, or on stellar environment. We present the first results of our HARPS long-term radial velocity (RV) survey which aims to discover exoplanets around intermediate-mass (between ~ 2 and 6 Msun) evolved stars in open clusters. We selected 826 bona fide HARPS observations of 114 giants from an initial list of 29 open clusters and computed the half peak-to-peak variability of the HARPS RV measurements, namely DeltaRV/2, for each target, to search for the best planet-host candidates. We also performed time series analysis for a few targets with enough observations to search for orbital solutions. Although we attempted to rule out the presence of binaries on the basis of previous surveys, we detected 14 new binary candidates in our sample, most of them identified from a comparison between HARPS and CORAVEL data. We also suggest 11 new planet-host candidates based on a relation between the stellar surface gravity and DeltaRV/2. Ten of the candidates have less than 3 Msun, showing evidence of a low planet occurrence rate for massive stars. One of the planet-host candidates and one of the binary candidates show very clear RV periodic variations, allowing us to confirm the discovery of a new planet and to compute the orbital solution for the binary. The planet is IC 4651 9122b, with a minimum mass of msini = 6.3 MJ and a semi-major axis a = 2.0 AU. The binary companion is NGC 5822 201B, with a very low minimum mass of msini = 0.11 Msun and a semi-major axis a = 6.5 AU, which is comparable to the Jupiter distance to the Sun., Accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics. 14 pages, 11 figures

Observations of circumstellar disks provide a powerful tool for our understanding of planetary systems dynamics. Analogs to the Solar System asteroid belts, debris disks result from the collision of the remaining solid material of the planet formation process. Even if the presence of disk is now reported for hundreds of stars, its detection around stars similar to the Sun is still very sparse. We report the results of a search for debris disks around Kepler stars with surface physical parameters close to solar values, including rotation period, using observations by the Wide-field infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). From the entire sample of Kepler stars, 881 targets were identified with these parameters and only six of them (KIC 1868785, 7267949, 7435796, 10533222, 11352643, and KIC 11666436) show unambiguous infrared excess, for which we determined debris disk physical parameters. Interestingly, the present study reveals traces of debris disks much more massive and brighter than the Solar System zodiacal dust, probably resulting from recent violent collisional events, orbiting stars with ages around the solar values., Comment: 21 pages, and 3 figures, Accepted for publication on ApJL

Understanding the properties of the continuum radiation and broad emission lines of active galactic nuclei provide significant information not only to model the radiation mechanism and constrain the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) but also to probe the central engine of the sources. Here we investigate the multifractal behaviour of the H$\beta$ emission line and the 5100 {\AA} continuum flux light curves of NGC 5548. The aim is to search for multi-scaling signatures in the light curves and check if there is a possible nonlinear relationship between them. To this end, we use a multifractality analysis technique called Multifractal Detrended Moving Average (MFDMA) analysis. We detect multifractal (nonlinear) signatures in the full monitoring and densely sampled period of the H$\beta$ line and 5100 {\AA} continuum light curves of NGC 5548, possibly indicating the presence of complex and nonlinear interaction in the 5100 {\AA} continuum and H$\beta$ emission line regions. Moreover, the degree of multifractality of H$\beta$ line is found to be about twice that of the 5100 {\AA} continuum. The nonlinearity of both emissions could be generated when the broad-line region reprocesses the radiation from the central compact source. Finally, we found that anti-persistent long-range temporal correlation is the main source of the multifractality detected in both light curves., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical journal

In the present study, we investigate the multifractal nature of a long-cadence time series observed by the \textit{Kepler} mission for a sample of 34 M dwarf stars and the Sun in its active phase. Using the Multifractal Detrending Moving Average algorithm (MFDMA), which enables the detection of multifractality in nonstationary time series, we define a set of multifractal indices based on the multifractal spectrum profile as a measure of the level of stellar magnetic activity. This set of indices is given by the ($A$,$\Delta \alpha$,$C$,$H$)-quartet, where $A$, $\Delta \alpha$ and $C$ are related to geometric features from the multifractal spectrum and the global Hurst exponent $H$ describes the global structure and memorability of time series dynamics. As a test, we measure these indices and compare them with a magnetic index defined as $S_{ph}$ and verify the degree of correlation among them. First, we apply the Poincar\'e plot method and find a strong correlation between the $\left\langle S_{ph}\right\rangle$ index and one of the descriptors that emerges from this method. As a result, we find that this index is strongly correlated with long-term features of the signal. From the multifractal perspective, the $\left\langle S_{ph}\right\rangle$ index is also strongly linked to the geometric properties of the multifractal spectrum except for the $H$ index. Furthermore, our results emphasize that the rotation period of stars is scaled by the $H$ index, which is consistent with Skumanich's relationship. This study presents a search for IR excess in the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 $\mu$m bands in a sample of 216 targets, composed of solar sibling, twin and analog stars observed by the \textit{WISE} mission. In general, an infrared excess suggests the existence of warm dust around a star. We detected 12 $\mu$m and/or 22 $\mu$m excesses at the 3$\sigma$ level of confidence in five solar analog stars, corresponding to a frequency of 4.1 $\%$ of the entire sample of solar analogs analyzed, and in one out of 29 solar sibling candidates, confirming previous studies. The estimation of the dust properties shows that the sources with infrared excesses possess circumstellar material with temperatures that, within the uncertainties, are similar to that of the material found in the asteroid belt in our solar system. No photospheric flux excess was identified at the W1 (3.4 $\mu$m) and W2 (4.6 $\mu$m) \textit{WISE} bands, indicating that, in the majority of stars of the present sample, no detectable dust is generated. Interestingly, among the sixty solar twin stars analyzed in this work, no \textit{WISE} photospheric flux excess was detected. The first generation of E-ELT instruments will include an optical-infrared High Resolution Spectrograph, conventionally indicated as EELT-HIRES, which will be capable of providing unique breakthroughs in the fields of exoplanets, star and planet formation, physics and evolution of stars and galaxies, cosmology and fundamental physics. A 2-year long phase A study for EELT-HIRES has just started and will be performed by a consortium composed of institutes and organisations from Brazil, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. We report on the installation of a laser frequency comb (LFC) at the HARPS spectrograph, which we characterize relative to a second LFC that we had brought to HARPS for testing. This allowed us for the first time to probe the relative stability of two independent astronomical LFCs over an extended wavelength range. Both LFCs covered the spectral range of HARPS at least from 460 to 690 nm. After optimization of the fiber coupling to HARPS to suppress modal noise, a relative stability of the two LFCs in the low cm/s range was obtained. In combination with the results of our four earlier LFC test campaigns on HARPS, the available data now cover a time span of more than six years.

We present different analyses of Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) data to interpret the inner circumstellar envelope (CSE) morphology of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. Three objects were considered: RY Sgr, V CrA, and V854 Cen. Chi-squared maps of different geometrical models allow to identify a reasonable description of these CSEs, which can be further studied in radiative transfer codes. Overall, the inner CSE morphology of these RCB stars are consistent with a central star surrounded by a dusty shell with at least a bright clump (or a dust cluster).

We are investigating the formation and evolution of dust around the hydrogen-decient supergiants known as R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. We aim to determine the connection between the probable merger past of these stars and their current dustproduction activities We carried out high-angular resolution interferometric observations of three RCB stars, namely RY Sgr, V CrA, and V854 Cen with the mid-IR interferometer, MIDI on the VLTI, using two telescope pairs. The baselines ranged from 30 to 60 m, allowing us to probe the dusty environment at very small spatial scales ( 50 mas or 400 R?). The observations of the RCB star dust environments were interpreted using both geometrical models and one-dimensional radiative transfer codes. From our analysis we nd that asymmetric circumstellar material is apparent in RY Sgr, may also exist in V CrA, and is possible for V854 Cen. Overall, we nd that our observations are consistent with dust forming in clumps ejected randomly around the RCB star so that over time they create a spherically symmetric distribution of dust. However, we conclude that the determination of whether there is a preferred plane of dust ejection must wait until a time series of observations are obtained.

Context. R Coronae Borealis (R CrB) variable stars are suspected to sporadically eject optically thick dust clouds causing, when one of them lies on the line-of-sight, a huge brightness decline in visible light. Direct detections with 8-m class adaptive optics of such clouds located at about 0.2–0.3 arcsec from the center (∼1000 stellar radii) were recently reported for RY Sgr, the brightest R CrB of the southern hemisphere. Aims. Mid-infrared interferometric observations of RY Sgr allowed us to explore the circumstellar regions much closer to the central star (∼20–40 mas) to look for the signature of any heterogeneities and to characterize them. Methods. Using the VLTI/MIDI instrument, five dispersed visibility curves in the N-band were recorded in May and June 2005 with different projected baselines oriented towards two roughly perpendicular directions. The large spatial frequencies’ visibility curves exhibit a sinusoidal shape, whereas, at shorter spatial frequencies’ visibility curves follow a Gaussian decrease. These observations are well interpreted with a geometrical model consisting of a central star surrounded by an extended circumstellar envelope in which one bright cloud is embedded. Results. Within this simple geometrical scheme, the inner 110 AU dusty environment of RY Sgr is dominated at the time of observations by a single dusty cloud, which at 10 µm represents ∼10% of the total flux of the whole system, slightly less that the star flux. The cloud is located at about 100 stellar radii (or ∼30 AU) from the center toward the East-North-East direction (or the symmetric direction with respect to center) within a circumstellar envelope whose FWHM is about 120 stellar radii. This first detection of a cloud so close to the central star supports the classical scenario of the R CrB brightness variations in the optical spectral domain and demonstrates the feasibility of a temporal monitoring of the dusty environment of this star on a monthly scale.

Aims.Analysis of the innermost regions of the carbon-rich star IRC+10216 and of the outer layers of its circumstellar envelope have been performed in order to constrain its mass-loss history. Methods: .We analyzed the high dynamic range of near-infrared adaptive optics and the deep V-band images of the circumstellar envelope of IRC+10216 using high angular resolution, collected with the VLT/NACO and FORS1 instruments. Results: .From the near-infrared observations, we present maps of the sub-arcsecond structures, or clumps, in the innermost regions. The morphology of these clumps is found to strongly vary from J- to L-band. Their relative motion appears to be more complex than proposed in earlier works: they can be weakly accelerated, have a constant velocity, or even be motionless with respect to one another. From V-band imaging, we present a high spatial resolution map of the shell distribution in the outer layers of IRC+10216. Shells are resolved well up to a distance of about 90'' to the core of the nebula and most of them appear to be composed of thinner elongated shells. Finally, by combining the NACO and FORS1 images, a global view is present to show both the extended layers and the bipolar core of the nebula together with the real size of the inner clumps. Conclusions: .This study confirms the rather complex nature of the IRC+10216 circumstellar environment. In particular, the coexistence at different spatial scales of structures with very different morphologies (clumps, bipolarity, and almost spherical external layers) is very puzzling. Context. Stellar variability in the near-infrared (NIR) remains largely unexplored. The exploitation of public science archives with data-mining methods offers a perspective for a time-domain exploration of the NIR sky. Aims. We perform a comprehensive search for stellar variability using the optical-NIR multiband photometric data in the public Calibration Database of the WFCAM Science Archive (WSA), with the aim of contributing to the general census of variable stars and of extending the current scarce inventory of accurate NIR light curves for a number of variable star classes. Methods. Standard data-mining methods were applied to extract and fine-tune time-series data from the WSA. We introduced new variability indices designed for multiband data with correlated sampling, and applied them for preselecting variable star candidates, i.e., light curves that are dominated by correlated variations, from noise-dominated ones. Preselection criteria were established by robust numerical tests for evaluating the response of variability indices to the colored noise characteristic of the data. We performed a period search using the string-length minimization method on an initial catalog of 6551 variable star candidates preselected by variability indices. Further frequency analysis was performed on positive candidates using three additional methods in combination, in order to cope with aliasing. Results. We find 275 periodic variable stars and an additional 44 objects with suspected variability with uncertain periods or apparently aperiodic variation. Only 44 of these objects had been previously known, including 11 RR Lyrae stars on the outskirts of the globular cluster M 3 (NGC 5272). We provide a preliminary classification of the new variable stars that have well-measured light curves, but the variability types of a large number of objects remain ambiguous. We classify most of the new variables as contact binary stars, but we also find several pulsating stars, among which 34 are probably new field RR Lyrae, and 3 are likely Cepheids. We also identify 32 highly reddened variable objects close to previously known dark nebulae, suggesting that these are embedded young stellar objects. We publish our results and all light curve data as the WFCAM Variable Star Catalog.

Rapidly rotating giant stars are relatively rare and may represent important stages of stellar evolution, resulting from stellar coalescence of close binary systems or accretion of sub-stellar companions by their hosting stars. In the present letter we report 17 giant stars observed in the scope of the Kepler space mission exhibiting rapid rotation behavior. For the first time the abnormal rotational behavior for this puzzling family of stars is revealed by direct measurements of rotation, namely from photometric rotation period, exhibiting very short rotation period with values ranging from 13 to 55 days. This finding points for remarkable surface rotation rates, up to 18 times the Sun rotation. These giants are combined with 6 other recently listed in the literature for mid-IR diagnostic based on WISE information, from which a trend for an infrared excess is revealed for at least a half of the stars, but at a level far lower than the dust excess emission shown by planet-bearing main-sequence stars., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures and 1 table, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We study the distribution of the photometric rotation period (Prot), which is a direct measurement of the surface rotation at active latitudes, for three subsamples of Sun-like stars: one from CoRoT data and two from Kepler data. We identify the main populations of these samples and interpret their main biases specifically for a comparison with the solar Prot. Prot and variability amplitude (A) measurements were obtained from public CoRoT and Kepler catalogs combined with physical parameters. Because these samples are subject to selection effects, we computed synthetic samples with simulated biases to compare with observations, particularly around the location of the Sun in the HR diagram. Theoretical grids and empirical relations were used to combine physical parameters with Prot and A. Biases were simulated by performing cutoffs on the physical and rotational parameters in the same way as in each observed sample. A crucial cutoff is related with the detectability of the rotational modulation, which strongly depends on A. The synthetic samples explain the observed Prot distributions of Sun-like stars as having two main populations: one of young objects (group I, with ages younger than ~1 Gyr) and another of MS and evolved stars (group II, with ages older than ~1 Gyr). The proportions of groups I and II in relation to the total number of stars range within 64-84% and 16-36%, respectively. Hence, young objects abound in the distributions, producing the effect of observing a high number of short periods around the location of the Sun in the HR diagram. Differences in the Prot distributions between the CoRoT and Kepler Sun-like samples may be associated with different Galactic populations. Overall, the synthetic distribution around the solar period agrees with observations, which suggests that the solar rotation is normal with respect to Sun-like stars within the accuracy of current data., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, A&A accepted

Until a few years ago, the amplitude variation in the photometric data had been limitedly explored mainly because of time resolution and photometric sensitivity limitations. This investigation is now possible thanks to the Kepler and CoRoT databases which provided a unique set of data for studying of the nature of stellar variability cycles. The present study characterizes the amplitude variation in a sample of main--sequence stars with light curves collected using CoRoT exo--field CCDs. We analyze potential stellar activity cycles by studying the variability amplitude over small boxes. The cycle periods and amplitudes were computed based on the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, harmonic fits, and visual inspection. As a first application of our approach we have considered the photometric data for 16 CoRoT FGK main sequence stars, revisited during the IRa01, LRa01 and LRa06 CoRoT runs. The 16 CoRoT stars appear to follow the empirical relations between activity cycle periods ($P_{cyc}$) and the rotation period ($P_{rot}$) found by previous works. In addition to the so-called A (active) and I (inactive) sequences previously identified, there is a possible third sequence, here named S (short-cycles) sequence. However, recovery fractions estimated from simulations suggest that only a half of our sample has confident cycle measurements. Therefore, more study is needed to verify our results and Kepler data shall be notably useful for such a study. Aims:To support the computation and evolutionary interpretation of periods associated with the rotational modulation, oscillations, and variability of stars located in the CoRoT fields, we are conducting a spectroscopic survey for stars located in the fields already observed by the satellite. These observations allow us to compute physical and chemical parameters for our stellar sample. Method: Using spectroscopic observations obtained with UVES/VLT and Hydra/Blanco, and based on standard analysis techniques, we computed physical and chemical parameters ($T_{\rm{eff}}$, $\log \,(g)$, $\rm{[Fe/H]}$, $v_{\rm{mic}}$, $v_{\rm{rad}}$, $v \sin \,(i)$, and $A(\rm{Li})$) for a large sample of CoRoT targets. Results: We provide physical and chemical parameters for a sample comprised of 138 CoRoT targets. Our analysis shows the stars in our sample are located in different evolutionary stages, ranging from the main sequence to the red giant branch, and range in spectral type from F to K. The physical and chemical properties for the stellar sample are in agreement with typical values reported for FGK stars. However, we report three stars presenting abnormal lithium behavior in the CoRoT fields. These parameters allow us to properly characterize the intrinsic properties of the stars in these fields. Our results reveal important differences in the distributions of metallicity, $T_{\rm eff}$, and evolutionary status for stars belonging to different CoRoT fields, in agreement with results obtained independently from ground-based photometric surveys. Conclusions: Our spectroscopic catalog, by providing much-needed spectroscopic information for a large sample of CoRoT targets, will be of key importance for the successful accomplishment of several different programs related to the CoRoT mission, thus it will help further boost the scientific return associated with this space mission., Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Spectra of composite systems (e.g., spectroscopic binaries) contain spatial information that can be retrieved by measuring the radial velocities (i.e., Doppler shifts) of the components in four observations with the slit rotated by 90 degrees in the sky. By using basic concepts of slit spectroscopy we show that the geometry of composite systems can be reliably retrieved by measuring only radial velocity differences taken with different slit angles. The spatial resolution is determined by the precision with which differential radial velocities can be measured. We use the UVES spectrograph at the VLT to observe the known spectroscopic binary star HD 188088 (HIP 97944), which has a maximum expected separation of 23 milli-arcseconds. We measure an astrometric signal in radial velocity of 276 \ms, which corresponds to a separation between the two components at the time of the observations of 18 $\pm2$ milli-arcseconds. The stars were aligned east-west. We describe a simple optical device to simultaneously record pairs of spectra rotated by 180 degrees, thus reducing systematic effects. We compute and provide the function expressing the shift of the centroid of a seeing-limited image in the presence of a narrow slit.The proposed technique is simple to use and our test shows that it is amenable for deriving astrometry with milli-arcsecond accuracy or better, beyond the diffraction limit of the telescope. The technique can be further improved by using simple devices to simultaneously record the spectra with 180 degrees angles.With tachoastrometry, radial velocities and astrometric positions can be measured simultaneously for many double line system binaries in an easy way. The method is not limited to binary stars, but can be applied to any astrophysical configuration in which spectral lines are generated by separate (non-rotational symmetric) regions., Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a re-engineered version of the laser frequency comb that has proven a few-cm/s calibration repeatability on the HARPS spectrograph during past campaigns. The new design features even better performance characteristics. The newly arranged oscillator, filter cavities and fiber injection for spectral broadening allow robust long term operation, controlled from a remote site. Its automation features enable easy operation for non-experts. The system is being prepared for installation on the HARPS spectrograph in fall of 2014, and will subsequently become available to the astronomical community.

Aims. The wavelet transform has been used as a powerful tool for treating several problems in astrophysics. In this work, we show that the time-frequency analysis of stellar light curves using the wavelet transform is a practical tool for identifying rotation, magnetic activity, and pulsation signatures. We present the wavelet spectral composition and multiscale variations of the time series for four classes of stars: targets dominated by magnetic activity, stars with transiting planets, those with binary transits, and pulsating stars. Methods. We applied the Morlet wavelet (6th order), which offers high time and frequency resolution. By applying the wavelet transform to the signal, we obtain the wavelet local and global power spectra. The first is interpreted as energy distribution of the signal in time-frequency space, and the second is obtained by time integration of the local map. Results. Since the wavelet transform is a useful mathematical tool for nonstationary signals, this technique applied to Kepler and CoRoT light curves allows us to clearly identify particular signatures for different phenomena. In particular, patterns were identified for the temporal evolution of the rotation period and other periodicity due to active regions affecting these light curves. In addition, a beat-pattern signature in the local wavelet map of pulsating stars over the entire time span was also detected., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

To date, the CoRoT space mission has produced more than 124,471 light curves. Classifying these curves in terms of unambiguous variability behavior is mandatory for obtaining an unbiased statistical view on their controlling root-causes. The present study provides an overview of semi-sinusoidal light curves observed by the CoRoT exo-field CCDs. We selected a sample of 4,206 light curves presenting well-defined semi-sinusoidal signatures. The variability periods were computed based on Lomb-Scargle periodograms, harmonic fits, and visual inspection. Color-period diagrams for the present sample show the trend of an increase of the variability periods as long as the stars evolve. This evolutionary behavior is also noticed when comparing the period distribution in the Galactic center and anti-center directions. These aspects indicate a compatibility with stellar rotation, although more information is needed to confirm their root-causes. Considering this possibility, we identified a subset of three Sun-like candidates by their photometric period. The present work reports on the discovery of three stars that we have identified to be rotating Sun-like stars, based on rotational modulation signatures inferred from light curves from the CoRoT mission's Public Archives. In our analysis, we performed an initial selection based on rotation period and position in the Period--$T_{\rm eff}$ diagram. This revealed that the stars CoRoT IDs 100746852, 102709980, and 105693572 provide potentially good matches to the Sun with similar rotation period. To refine our analysis, we applied a novel procedure, taking into account the fluctuations of the features associated to photometric modulation at different time intervals and the fractality traces that are present in the light curves of the Sun and of these "New Sun" candidates alike. In this sense, we computed the so-called Hurst exponent for the referred stars, for a sample of fourteen CoRoT stars with sub- and super-solar rotational periods, and for the Sun, itself, in its active and quiet phases. We found that the Hurst exponent can provide a strong discriminant of Sun-like behavior, going beyond what can be achieved with solely the rotation period itself. In particular, we find that CoRoT ID 105693572 is the star that most closely matches the solar rotation properties, as far as the latter's imprints on light curve behavior is concerned. Since 2008 we used high-precision radial velocity (RV) measurements obtained with different telescopes to detect signatures of massive planets around main-sequence and evolved stars of the open cluster (OC) M67. We aimed to perform a long-term study on giant planet formation in open clusters and determine how this formation depends on stellar mass and chemical composition. A new hot Jupiter (HJ) around the main-sequence star YBP401 is reported in this work. An update of the RV measurements for the two HJ host-stars YBP1194 and YBP1514 is also discussed. Our sample of 66 main-sequence and turnoff stars includes 3 HJs, which indicates a high rate of HJs in this cluster (~5.6% for single stars and ~4.5% for the full sample ). This rate is much higher than what has been discovered in the field, either with RV surveys or by transits. High metallicity is not a cause for the excess of HJs in M67, nor can the excess be attributed to high stellar masses. When combining this rate with the non-zero eccentricity of the orbits, our results are qualitatively consistent with a HJ formation scenario dominated by strong encounters with other stars or binary companions and subsequent planet-planet scattering, as predicted by N-body simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Journal Letters. 6 pages, 5 figures, 4 Tables

A Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) for sucrose using invertase (E.C. 3.2.1.26), mutarotase (E.C.5.1.3.3) and glucose oxidase (E.C.1.1.3.4) was developed. The enzymes were immobilised on glass beads using glutaraldehyde. The sucrose concentration was related to oxygen saturation. Fall in O2 concentration, as a result of sucrose oxidation, was detected by a low cost, home-made O2 electrode. The system was able to measure sucrose from 0.025 to 100mM with a response time of 6min using 200 μl of sample, with an apparent Km of 42mM of sucrose. The system has been operated satisfactorily for 50 days without loss any initial activity.

Monochromatic model: In a first-order analysis, we neglected any variations with wavelength of the source geometry and fitted the curves with simple monochromatic geometric models, obtaining a global morphology in the N-band. Proposed model: central star + dust cloud + extended circumstellar envelope. Results for the best fit to the visibility curves (see Fig. 1): • Separation between the cloud and the central star: 16 ± 1 mas. • PA of the cloud: 75◦ ± 10◦ (modulo 180◦). • FWHM of the Gaussian CSE: 18 ± 3 mas. • Flux contributions to the total N-band flux of the whole system: 10% ± 2% for the central star and 8% ± 2% for the cloud.

We analyzed the host stars of the present sample of confirmed planets detected by Kepler and Kepler Objects of Interest (KOI) to compute new photometric rotation periods and to study the behavior of their angular momentum. Lomb-Scargle periodograms and wavelet maps were computed for 3,807 stars. For 540 of these stars, we were able to detect rotational modulation of the light curves at a significance level of greater than 99%. For 63 of these 540 stars, no rotation measurements were previously available in the literature. According to the published masses and evolutionary tracks of the stars in this sample, the sample is composed of M- to F-type stars (with masses of 0.48-1.53 M$_{\odot}$) with rotation periods that span a range of 2 to 89 days. These periods exhibit an excellent agreement with previously reported (for the stars for which such values are available), and the observed rotational period distribution strongly agrees with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, for the 540 sources considered here, the stellar angular momentum provides an important test of Kraft's relation based on the photometric rotation periods. Finally, this study directly contributes in a direct approach to our understanding of how angular momentum is distributed between the host star and its (detected) planetary system; the role of angular momentum exchange in such systems is an unavoidable piece of the stellar rotation puzzle., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

The dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM) are strongly affected by turbulence, which shows increased anisotropy in the presence of a magnetic field. We expand upon the Esquivel & Lazarian method to estimate the Alfven Mach number using the structure function anisotropy in velocity centroid data from position-position-velocity maps. We utilize 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of fully developed turbulence, with a large range of sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers, to produce synthetic observations of velocity centroids with observational characteristics such as thermal broadening, cloud boundaries, noise, and radiative transfer effects of carbon monoxide. In addition, we investigate how the resulting anisotropy-Alfven Mach number dependency found in Esquivel & Lazarian (2011) might change when taking the second moment of the position-position-velocity cube or when using different expressions to calculate the velocity centroids. We find that the degree of anisotropy is related primarily to the magnetic field strength (i.e. Alfven Mach number) and the line-of-sight orientation, with a secondary effect on sonic Mach number. If the line-of-sight is parallel to up to ~45 deg off of the mean field direction, the velocity centroid anisotropy is not prominent enough to distinguish different Alfvenic regimes. The observed anisotropy is not strongly affected by including radiative transfer, although future studies should include additional tests for opacity effects. These results open up the possibility of studying the magnetic nature of the ISM using statistical methods in addition to existing observational techniques.

This chapter discusses a flow injection analysis (FIA) study for determination of sucrose using GOD and invertase immobilized on glass beads. The measurement of sucrose is important in the food and fermentation industries. It is thus very important to develop a fast, simple and reproducible method for determination of sucrose. The principle of this sensor is based on monitoring the decrease in dissolved oxygen resulting from three enzyme reactions in the presence of sucrose. In this study, invertase (E.C.3.2.1.26.) and mutarotase (E.C.5.1.3.3.) were obtained from baker's yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ); GOD (E.C.1.1.3.4.) was obtained. The enzymes were immobilized by covalent binding using glutaraldehyde as bifunctional agent on alkylamine glass beads. The flow system was used to evaluate the sensor under dynamic conditions. The working electrode was a home-made oxygen electrode. A sample of sucrose was injected into the system and carried by citrate–phosphate buffer at flow rate of 0.6 ml/min upward through the column containing the immobilized enzyme. An apparent Km of 0.048 M was found. This system shows a linear output from 2.5 to 100 mM of sucrose.

Context. Signatures of chromospheric activity enhancement have been found for a dozen stars, pointing to a possible star-planet interaction. Nevertheless in the coronal activity regime, there is no conclusive observational evidence of such an interaction. Does star-planet interaction manifest itself only for a few particular cases, without having a major effect on stars with planets in general? Aims. We aim to add additional observational constraints to support or reject the major effects of star-planet interactions in stellar activity, based on Ca II chromospheric emission flux. Methods. We performed a statistical analysis of Ca II emission flux of stars with planets, as well as a comparison between Ca II and X-ray emission fluxes, searching for dependencies on planetary parameters. Results. In the present sample of stars with planets, there are no significant correlations between chromospheric activity indicator log(R � ) and planetary parameters. Furthermore, the distribution of the chromospheric activity indicator for stars without planets is indistinguishable from the one with planets.
