We present resolved $3.6-250~\mu$m dust spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting for $\sim 800$ nearby galaxies. We measure the distribution of radiation field intensities heating the dust, the dust mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm d}$), and the fraction of dust in the form of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; $q_{\rm PAH}$). We find that the average interstellar radiation field ($\overline{U}$) is correlated both with stellar mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\star}$) and star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), while more intense radiation fields are only correlated with $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. We show that $q_{\rm PAH}$ is a steeply decreasing function of $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, likely reflecting PAH destruction in H II regions. Galaxy integrated $q_{\rm PAH}$ is strongly, negatively correlated with specific star formation rate (sSFR) and offset from the star-forming ``main sequence'' ($\Delta$MS), suggesting that both metallicity and star formation intensity play a role in setting the global $q_{\rm PAH}$. We also find a nearly constant M$_{\rm d}$/M$_\star$ ratio for galaxies on the main sequence, with a lower ratio for more quiescent galaxies, likely due to their lower gas fractions. From these results, we construct prescriptions to estimate the radiation field distribution in both integrated and resolved galaxies. We test these prescriptions by comparing our predicted $\overline{U}$ to results of SED fitting for stacked "main sequence" galaxies at $0

The molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is crucial to the evolution of the interstellar medium in galaxies. We investigate the balance between the atomic ($\Sigma_{\rm HI}$) and molecular gas ($\Sigma_{\rm H2}$) surface densities in eight nearby star-forming galaxies using new high-quality observations from MeerKAT and ALMA (for HI and CO, respectively). We define the molecular gas ratio as $R_{\rm mol} = \Sigma_{\rm H2} / \Sigma_{\rm HI}$ and measure how it depends on local conditions in the galaxy disks using multi-wavelength observations. We find that, depending on the galaxy, HI is detected at $>3\sigma$ out to 20-120 kpc in galactocentric radius ($r_{\rm gal}$). The typical radius at which $\Sigma_{\rm HI}$ reaches 1~$\rm M_\odot~pc^{-2}$ is $r_{\rm HI}\approx22$~kpc, which corresponds to 1-3 times the optical radius ($r_{25}$). $R_{\rm mol}$ correlates best with the dynamical equilibrium pressure, P$_{\rm DE}$, among potential drivers studied, with a median correlation coefficient of $<\rho>=0.89$. Correlations between $R_{\rm mol}$ and star formation rate, total gas and stellar surface density, metallicity, and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$/P$_{\rm DE}$ are present but somewhat weaker. Our results also show a direct correlation between P$_{\rm DE}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, supporting self-regulation models. Quantitatively, we measure similar scalings as previous works and attribute the modest differences that we find to the effect of varying resolution and sensitivity. At $r_{\rm gal} {\gtrsim}0.4~r_{25}$, atomic gas dominates over molecular gas, and at the balance of these two gas phases, we find that the baryon mass is dominated by stars, with $\Sigma_{*} > 5~\Sigma_{\rm gas}$. We measure the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$) in 37 galaxies at 2~kpc resolution, using dust surface density inferred from far-infrared emission as a tracer of the gas surface density and assuming a constant dust-to-metals ratio. In total, we have $\sim790$ and $\sim610$ independent measurements of $\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$ for CO (2-1) and (1-0), respectively. The mean values for $\alpha_\mathrm{CO~(2-1)}$ and $\alpha_\mathrm{CO~(1-0)}$ are $9.3^{+4.6}_{-5.4}$ and $4.2^{+1.9}_{-2.0}~M_\odot~pc^{-2}~(K~km~s^{-1})^{-1}$, respectively. The CO-intensity-weighted mean for $\alpha_\mathrm{CO~(2-1)}$ is 5.69, and 3.33 for $\alpha_\mathrm{CO~(1-0)}$. We examine how $\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$ scales with several physical quantities, e.g.\ star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and dust-mass-weighted average interstellar radiation field strength ($\overline{U}$). Among them, $\overline{U}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, and integrated CO intensity ($W_\mathrm{CO}$) have the strongest anti-correlation with spatially resolved $\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$. We provide linear regression results to \aco for all quantities tested. At galaxy integrated scales, we observe significant correlations between $\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$ and $W_\mathrm{CO}$, metallicity, $\overline{U}$, and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. We also find that the normalized $\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$ decreases with stellar mass surface density ($\Sigma_\star$) in the high surface density regions ($\Sigma_\star\geq100~{\rm M_\odot~pc^{-2}}$), following the power-law relations $\alpha_\mathrm{CO~(2-1)}\propto\Sigma_\star^{-0.5}$ and $\alpha_\mathrm{CO~(1-0)}\propto\Sigma_\star^{-0.2}$. Determining how galactic environment, especially the high gas densities and complex dynamics in bar-fed galaxy centers, alters the star formation efficiency (SFE) of molecular gas is critical to understanding galaxy evolution. However, these same physical or dynamical effects also alter the emissivity properties of CO, leading to variations in the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_\rm{CO}$) that impact the assessment of the gas column densities and thus of the SFE. To address such issues, we investigate the dependence of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ on local CO velocity dispersion at 150-pc scales using a new set of dust-based $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ measurements, and propose a new $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ prescription that accounts for CO emissivity variations across galaxies. Based on this prescription, we estimate the SFE in a sample of 65 galaxies from the PHANGS-ALMA survey. We find increasing SFE towards high surface density regions like galaxy centers, while using a constant or metallicity-based $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ results in a more homogeneous SFE throughout the centers and disks. Our prescription further reveals a mean molecular gas depletion time of 700 Myr in the centers of barred galaxies, which is overall 3-4 times shorter than in non-barred galaxy centers or the disks. Across the galaxy disks, the depletion time is consistently around 2-3 Gyr regardless of the choice of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ prescription. All together, our results suggest that the high level of star formation activity in barred centers is not simply due to an increased amount of molecular gas but also an enhanced SFE compared to non-barred centers or disk regions., Comment: 12 pages of main text, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_\rm{CO}$) is central to measuring the amount and properties of molecular gas. It is known to vary with environmental conditions, and previous studies have revealed lower $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ in the centers of some barred galaxies on kpc scales. To unveil the physical drivers of such variations, we obtained ALMA Band 3, 6, and 7 observations toward the inner 2 kpc of NGC 3627 and NGC 4321 tracing $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O lines on 100 pc scales. Our multi-line modeling and Bayesian likelihood analysis of these datasets reveal variations of molecular gas density, temperature, optical depth, and velocity dispersion, which are among the key drivers of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$. The central 300 pc nuclei in both galaxies show strong enhancement of temperature $T_\rm{k}>100$ K and density $n_\rm{H_2}>10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. Assuming a CO-to-H$_2$ abundance of $3\times10^{-4}$, we derive 4-15 times lower $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ than the Galactic value across our maps, which agrees well with previous kpc-scale measurements. Combining the results with our previous work on NGC 3351, we find a strong correlation of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ with low-J $^{12}$CO optical depths ($\tau_\rm{CO}$), as well as an anti-correlation with $T_\rm{k}$. The $\tau_\rm{CO}$ correlation explains most of the $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ variation in the three galaxy centers, whereas changes in $T_\rm{k}$ influence $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ to second order. Overall, the observed line width and $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO 2-1 line ratio correlate with $\tau_\rm{CO}$ variation in these centers, and thus they are useful observational indicators for $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ variation. Carbon monoxide (CO) emission is the most widely used tracer of the bulk molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) in extragalactic studies. The CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, links the observed CO emission to the total molecular gas mass. However, no single prescription perfectly describes the variation of $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ across all environments across galaxies as a function of metallicity, molecular gas opacity, line excitation, and other factors. Using resolved spectral line observations of CO and its isotopologues, we can constrain the molecular gas conditions and link them to a variation in the conversion factor. We present new IRAM 30-m 1mm and 3mm line observations of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O} across the nearby galaxy M101. Based on the CO isotopologue line ratios, we find that selective nucleosynthesis and opacity changes are the main drivers of the variation in the line emission across the galaxy. Furthermore, we estimated $\alpha_{\rm CO(1-0)}$ using different approaches, including (i) the dust mass surface density derived from far-IR emission as an independent tracer of the total gas surface density and (ii) LTE-based measurements using the optically thin $^{13}$CO(1-0) intensity. We find an average value of $\alpha_{\rm CO}=4.4{\pm}0.9\rm\,M_\odot\,pc^{-2}(K\,km\,s^{-1})^{-1}$ across the galaxy, with a decrease by a factor of 10 toward the 2 kpc central region. In contrast, we find LTE-based values are lower by a factor of 2-3 across the disk relative to the dust-based result. Accounting for $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ variations, we found significantly reduced molecular gas depletion time by a factor 10 in the galaxy's center. In conclusion, our result suggests implications for commonly derived scaling relations, such as an underestimation of the slope of the Kennicutt Schmidt law, if $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ variations are not accounted for., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 25 pages, 15 figures

We investigate how the dust temperature is affected by local environmental quantities, especially dust surface density ($\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$), dust-to-gas ratio (D/G) and interstellar radiation field. We compile multi-wavelength observations in 46 nearby galaxies, uniformly processed with a common physical resolution of $2~$kpc. A physical dust model is used to fit the infrared dust emission spectral energy distribution (SED) observed with WISE and Herschel. The star formation rate (SFR) is traced with GALEX ultraviolet data corrected by WISE infrared. We find that the dust temperature correlates well with the SFR surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), which traces the radiation from young stars. The dust temperature decreases with increasing D/G at fixed $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ as expected from stronger dust shielding at high D/G, when $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ is higher than $\sim 2\times 10^{-3}~\rm M_\odot~yr^{-1}~kpc^{-2}$. These measurements are in good agreement with the dust temperature predicted by our proposed analytical model. Below this range of $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$, the observed dust temperature is higher than the model prediction and is only weakly dependent on D/G, which is possibly due to the dust heating from old stellar population or the variation of SFR within the past $10^{10}~$yr. Overall, the dust temperature as a function of $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ and $\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$ predicted by our analytical model is consistent with observations. We also notice that at fixed gas surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ tends to increase with D/G, i.e. we can empirically modify the Kennicutt-Schmidt law with a dependence on D/G to better match observations., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present maps tracing the fraction of dust in the form of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496 from JWST/MIRI observations. We trace the PAH fraction by combining the F770W ($7.7~\mu$m) and F1130W ($11.3~\mu$m) filters to track ionized and neutral PAH emission, respectively, and comparing the PAH emission to F2100W which traces small, hot dust grains. We find average $R{\rm_{PAH} = (F770W+F1130W)/F2100W}$ values of 3.3, 4.7, 5.1, and 3.6 in IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496, respectively. We find that H II regions traced by MUSE H$\alpha$ show a systematically low PAH fraction. The PAH fraction remains relatively constant across other galactic environments, with slight variations. We use CO + H I + H$\alpha$ to trace the interstellar gas phase and find that the PAH fraction decreases above a value of I$_{H\alpha}/\Sigma_{H~I+H_2}$ $\sim~10^{37.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$ (M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$)$^{-1}$, in all four galaxies. Radial profiles also show a decreasing PAH fraction with increasing radius, correlated with lower metallicity, in line with previous results showing a strong metallicity dependence to the PAH fraction. JWST observations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission provide some of the deepest and highest resolution views of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies. If PAHs are well mixed with the atomic and molecular gas and illuminated by the average diffuse interstellar radiation field, PAH emission may provide an approximately linear, high resolution, high sensitivity tracer of diffuse gas surface density. We present a pilot study that explores using PAH emission in this way based on MIRI observations of IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496 from the PHANGS-JWST Treasury. Using scaling relationships calibrated in Leroy et al. (2022), scaled F1130W provides 10--40 pc resolution and 3$\sigma$ sensitivity of $\Sigma_{\rm gas} \sim 2$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$. We characterize the surface densities of structures seen at $< 7$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ in our targets, where we expect the gas to be HI-dominated. We highlight the existence of filaments, inter-arm emission, and holes in the diffuse ISM at these low surface densities. Below $\sim 10$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ for NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496 the gas distribution shows a ``Swiss cheese''-like topology due to holes and bubbles pervading the relatively smooth distribution of diffuse ISM. Comparing to recent galaxy simulations, we observe similar topology for the low surface density gas, though with notable variations between simulations with different setups and resolution. Such a comparison of high resolution, low surface density gas with simulations is not possible with existing atomic and molecular gas maps, highlighting the unique power of JWST maps of PAH emission., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted as part of a PHANGS-JWST Focus Issue to appear in ApJ

We explore the relationship between mid-infrared (mid-IR) and CO rotational line emission from massive star-forming galaxies, which is one of the tightest scalings in the local universe. We assemble a large set of unresolved and moderately ($\sim 1$ kpc) spatially resolved measurements of CO (1-0) and CO (2-1) intensity, $I_{\rm CO}$, and mid-IR intensity, $I_{\rm MIR}$, at 8, 12, 22, and 24$\mu$m. The $I_{\rm CO}$ vs. $I_{\rm MIR}$ relationship is reasonably described by a power law with slopes $0.7{-}1.2$ and normalization $I_{\rm CO} \sim 1$ K km s$^{-1}$ at $I_{\rm MIR} \sim 1$ MJy sr$^{-1}$. Both the slopes and intercepts vary systematically with choice of line and band. The comparison between the relations measured for CO~(1-0) and CO (2-1) allow us to infer that $R_{21} \propto I_{\rm MIR}^{0.2}$, in good agreement with other work. The $8\mu$m and $12\mu$m bands, with strong PAH features, show steeper CO vs. mid-IR slopes than the $22\mu$m and $24\mu$m, consistent with PAH emission arising not just from CO-bright gas but also from atomic or CO-dark gas. The CO-to-mid-IR ratio correlates with global galaxy stellar mass ($M_\star$) and anti-correlates with SFR/$M_\star$. At $\sim 1$ kpc resolution, the first four PHANGS-JWST targets show CO to mid-IR relationships that are quantitatively similar to our larger literature sample, including showing the steep CO-to-mid-IR slopes for the JWST PAH-tracing bands, although we caution that these initial data have a small sample size and span a limited range of intensities., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures, key quantitative results in Table 3, Accepted as part of a PHANGS-JWST Focus Issue to appear in ApJ

The PHANGS collaboration has been building a reference dataset for the multi-scale, multi-phase study of star formation and the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies. With the successful launch and commissioning of JWST, we can now obtain high-resolution infrared imaging to probe the youngest stellar populations and dust emission on the scales of star clusters and molecular clouds ($\sim$5-50 pc). In Cycle 1, PHANGS is conducting an 8-band imaging survey from 2-21$\mu$m of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. CO(2-1) mapping, optical integral field spectroscopy, and UV-optical imaging for all 19 galaxies have been obtained through large programs with ALMA, VLT/MUSE, and Hubble. PHANGS-JWST enables a full inventory of star formation, accurate measurement of the mass and age of star clusters, identification of the youngest embedded stellar populations, and characterization of the physical state of small dust grains. When combined with Hubble catalogs of $\sim$10,000 star clusters, MUSE spectroscopic mapping of $\sim$20,000 HII regions, and $\sim$12,000 ALMA-identified molecular clouds, it becomes possible to measure the timescales and efficiencies of the earliest phases of star formation and feedback, build an empirical model of the dependence of small dust grain properties on local ISM conditions, and test our understanding of how dust-reprocessed starlight traces star formation activity, all across a diversity of galactic environments. We investigate physical reasons for high dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{dust}\gtrsim 40$ K) observed in some high-redshift ($z>5$) galaxies using analytic models. We consider two models that can be treated analytically: the radiative transfer (RT) model, {where a broad distribution of values for $T_\mathrm{dust}$ is considered}, and the one-tempearture (one-$T$) model, which assumes {uniform $T_\mathrm{dust}$}. These two extremes {serve to bracket the most realistic scenario}. We adopt the Kennicutt--Schmidt (KS) law to relate stellar radiation field to gas surface density, and vary the dust-to-gas ratio. As a consequence, our model is capable of predicting the relation between the surface density of star formation rate ($\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$) or dust mass ($\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$) and $T_\mathrm{dust}$. We show that the high $T_\mathrm{dust}$ observed at $z\gtrsim 5$ favour low dust-to-gas ratios ($\lesssim 10^{-3}$). An enhanced star formation compared with the KS law gives an alternative explanation for the high $T_\mathrm{dust}$. The dust temperatures are similar between the two (RT and one-$T$) models as long as we use ALMA Bands 6--8. We also examine the relation among $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$, $\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$ and $T_\mathrm{dust}$ without assuming the KS law, and confirm the consistency with the actual observational data at $z>5$. In the one-$T$ model, we also examine a clumpy dust distribution, which predicts lower $T_\mathrm{dust}$ because of the leakage of stellar radiation. We present a rich, multiwavelength, multiscale database built around the PHANGS-ALMA CO$\,$(2-1) survey and ancillary data. We use this database to present the distributions of molecular cloud populations and sub-galactic environments in 80 PHANGS galaxies, to characterize the relationship between population-averaged cloud properties and host galaxy properties, and to assess key timescales relevant to molecular cloud evolution and star formation. We show that PHANGS probes a wide range of kpc-scale gas, stellar, and star formation rate (SFR) surface densities, as well as orbital velocities and shear. The population-averaged cloud properties in each aperture correlate strongly with both local environmental properties and host galaxy global properties. Leveraging a variable selection analysis, we find that the kpc-scale surface densities of molecular gas and SFR tend to possess the most predictive power for the population-averaged cloud properties. Once their variations are controlled for, galaxy global properties contain little additional information, which implies that the apparent galaxy-to-galaxy variations in cloud populations are likely mediated by kpc-scale environmental conditions. We further estimate a suite of important timescales from our multiwavelength measurements. The cloud-scale free-fall time and turbulence crossing time are ${\sim}5{-}20$ Myr, comparable to previous cloud lifetime estimates. The timescales for orbital motion, shearing, and cloud-cloud collisions are longer, ${\sim}100$ Myr. The molecular gas depletion time is $1{-}3$ Gyr and shows weak to no correlations with the other timescales in our data. We present a map of the total intrinsic reddening across ~90 deg$^{2}$ of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) derived using optical (ugriz) and near-infrared (IR; YJKs) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of background galaxies. The reddening map is created from a sample of 222,752 early-type galaxies based on the LEPHARE $\chi^{2}$ minimisation SED-fitting routine. We find excellent agreement between the regions of enhanced intrinsic reddening across the central (4x4 deg$^2$) region of the LMC and the morphology of the low-level pervasive dust emission as traced by far-IR emission. In addition, we are able to distinguish smaller, isolated enhancements that are coincident with known star-forming regions and the clustering of young stars observed in morphology maps. The level of reddening associated with the molecular ridge south of 30 Doradus is, however, smaller than in the literature reddening maps. The reduced number of galaxies detected in this region, due to high extinction and crowding, may bias our results towards lower reddening values. Our map is consistent with maps derived from red clump stars and from the analysis of the star formation history across the LMC. This study represents one of the first large-scale categorisations of extragalactic sources behind the LMC and as such we provide the LEPHARE outputs for our full sample of ~2.5 million sources., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We measure the low-J CO line ratio R21=CO(2-1)/CO(1-0), R32=CO(3-2)/CO(2-1), and R31 = CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) using whole-disk CO maps of nearby galaxies. We draw CO(2-1) from PHANGS--ALMA, HERACLES, and follow-up IRAM surveys; CO(1-0) from COMING and the Nobeyama CO Atlas of Nearby Spiral Galaxies; and CO(3-2) from the JCMT NGLS and APEX LASMA mapping. Altogether this yields 76, 47, and 29 maps of R21, R32, and R31 at 20" \sim 1.3 kpc resolution, covering 43, 34, and 20 galaxies. Disk galaxies with high stellar mass, log10 M_* [Msun]=10.25-11 and star formation rate, SFR=1-5 Msun/yr, dominate the sample. We find galaxy-integrated mean values and 16%-84% range of R21 = 0.65 (0.50-0.83), R32=0.50 (0.23-0.59), and R31=0.31 (0.20-0.42). We identify weak trends relating galaxy-integrated line ratios to properties expected to correlate with excitation, including SFR/M_* and SFR/L_CO. Within galaxies, we measure central enhancements with respect to the galaxy-averaged value of \sim 0.18^{+0.09}_{-0.14} dex for R21, 0.27^{+0.13}_{-0.15} dex for R31, and 0.08^{+0.11}_{-0.09} dex for R32. All three line ratios anti-correlate with galactocentric radius and positively correlate with the local star formation rate surface density and specific star formation rate, and we provide approximate fits to these relations. The observed ratios can be reasonably reproduced by models with low temperature, moderate opacity, and moderate densities, in good agreement with expectations for the cold ISM. We study how a single lattice defect in a discrete time quantum walk affects the return probability of a quantum particle. This defect at the starting position is modeled by a quantum coin that is distinct from the others over the lattice. This coin has a dependence on $\omega$ which quantifies the intensity of the localization. For some sorts of lattice defects, we show how the localization can have a dependence just on $\omega$, and also, the polar $\alpha$ and azimuth $\beta$ angles of the initial qubit by numerical calculations. We propose a lattice defect whose localization has additional dependence on $\beta+\omega$, leading to extra localization profiles. We present PHANGS-ALMA, the first survey to map CO J=2-1 line emission at ~1" ~ 100pc spatial resolution from a representative sample of 90 nearby (d<~20 Mpc) galaxies that lie on or near the z=0 "main sequence" of star-forming galaxies. CO line emission traces the bulk distribution of molecular gas, which is the cold, star-forming phase of the interstellar medium. At the resolution achieved by PHANGS-ALMA, each beam reaches the size of a typical individual giant molecular cloud (GMC), so that these data can be used to measure the demographics, life-cycle, and physical state of molecular clouds across the population of galaxies where the majority of stars form at z=0. This paper describes the scientific motivation and background for the survey, sample selection, global properties of the targets, ALMA observations, and characteristics of the delivered ALMA data and derived data products. As the ALMA sample serves as the parent sample for parallel surveys with VLT/MUSE, HST, AstroSat, VLA, and other facilities, we include a detailed discussion of the sample selection. We detail the estimation of galaxy mass, size, star formation rate, CO luminosity, and other properties, compare estimates using different systems and provide best-estimate integrated measurements for each target. We also report the design and execution of the ALMA observations, which combine a Cycle~5 Large Program, a series of smaller programs, and archival observations. Finally, we present the first 1" resolution atlas of CO emission from nearby galaxies and describe the properties and contents of the first PHANGS-ALMA public data release., Comment: 76 pages, 33 figures. We describe the processing of the PHANGS-ALMA survey and present the PHANGS-ALMA pipeline, a public software package that processes calibrated interferometric and total power data into science-ready data products. PHANGS-ALMA is a large, high-resolution survey of CO J=2-1 emission from nearby galaxies. The observations combine ALMA's main 12-m array, the 7-m array, and total power observations and use mosaics of dozens to hundreds of individual pointings. We describe the processing of the u-v data, imaging and deconvolution, linear mosaicking, combining interferometer and total power data, noise estimation, masking, data product creation, and quality assurance. Our pipeline has a general design and can also be applied to VLA and ALMA observations of other spectral lines and continuum emission. We highlight our recipe for deconvolution of complex spectral line observations, which combines multiscale clean, single scale clean, and automatic mask generation in a way that appears robust and effective. We also emphasize our two-track approach to masking and data product creation. We construct one set of "broadly masked" data products, which have high completeness but significant contamination by noise, and another set of "strictly masked" data products, which have high confidence but exclude faint, low signal-to-noise emission. Our quality assurance tests, supported by simulations, demonstrate that 12-m+7-m deconvolved data recover a total flux that is significantly closer to the total power flux than the 7-m deconvolved data alone. Previous work has argued that atomic gas mass estimates of galaxies from 21 cm HI emission are systematically low due to a cold opaque atomic gas component. If true, this opaque component necessitates a ~35% correction factor relative to the mass from assuming optically-thin HI emission. These mass corrections are based on fitting HI spectra with a single opaque component model that produces a distinct "top-hat" shaped line profile. Here, we investigate this issue using deep, high spectral resolution HI VLA observations of M31 and M33 to test if these top-hat profiles are instead superpositions of multiple HI components along the line-of-sight. We fit both models and find that >80% of the spectra strongly prefer a multi-component Gaussian model while <2% prefer the single opacity-corrected component model. This strong preference for multiple components argues against previous findings of lines-of-sight dominated by only cold HI. Our findings are enabled by the improved spectral resolution (0.42 km/s), whereas coarser spectral resolution blends multiple components together. We also show that the inferred opaque atomic ISM mass strongly depends on the goodness-of-fit definition and is highly uncertain when the inferred spin temperature has a large uncertainty. Finally, we find that the relation of the HI surface density with the dust surface density and extinction has significantly more scatter when the inferred HI opacity correction is applied. These variations are difficult to explain without additionally requiring large variations in the dust properties. We present a comparative study of four physical dust models and two single-temperature modified blackbody models by fitting them to the resolved WISE, Spitzer, and Herschel photometry of M101 (NGC 5457). Using identical data and a grid-based fitting technique, we compare the resulting dust and radiation field properties derived from the models. We find that the dust mass yielded by the different models can vary by up to factor of 3 (factor of 1.4 between physical models only), although the fits have similar quality. Despite differences in their definition of the carriers of the mid-IR aromatic features, all physical models show the same spatial variations for the abundance of that grain population. Using the well determined metallicity gradient in M101 and resolved gas maps, we calculate an approximate upper limit on the dust mass as a function of radius. All physical dust models are found to exceed this maximum estimate over some range of galactocentric radii. We show that renormalizing the models to match the same Milky Way high latitude cirrus spectrum and abundance constraints can reduce the dust mass differences between models and bring the total dust mass below the maximum estimate at all radii., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ -- 28 pp (12 figures) + appendices

We investigate the relationship between the dust-to-metals ratio (D/M) and the local interstellar medium environment at ~2 kpc resolution in five nearby galaxies: IC342, M31, M33, M101, and NGC628. A modified blackbody model with a broken power-law emissivity is used to model the dust emission from 100 to 500 um observed by Herschel. We utilize the metallicity gradient derived from auroral line measurements in HII regions whenever possible. Both archival and new CO rotational line and HI 21 cm maps are adopted to calculate gas surface density, including new wide field CO and HI maps for IC342 from IRAM and the VLA, respectively. We experiment with several prescriptions of CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, and compare the resulting D/M-metallicity and D/M-density correlations, both of which are expected to be non-negative from depletion studies. The D/M is sensitive to the choice of the conversion factor. The conversion factor prescriptions based on metallicity only yield too much molecular gas in the center of IC342 to obtain the expected correlations. Among the prescriptions tested, the one that yields the expected correlations depends on both metallicity and surface density. The 1-$\sigma$ range of the derived D/M spans 0.40-0.58. Compared to chemical evolution models, our measurements suggest that the dust growth time scale is much shorter than the dust destruction time scale. The measured D/M is consistent with D/M in galaxy-integrated studies derived from infrared dust emission. We compare the observed turbulent pressure in molecular gas, $P_\mathrm{turb}$, to the required pressure for the interstellar gas to stay in equilibrium in the gravitational potential of a galaxy, $P_\mathrm{DE}$. To do this, we combine arcsecond resolution CO data from PHANGS-ALMA with multi-wavelength data that traces the atomic gas, stellar structure, and star formation rate (SFR) for 28 nearby star-forming galaxies. We find that $P_\mathrm{turb}$ correlates with, but almost always exceeds the estimated $P_\mathrm{DE}$ on kiloparsec scales. This indicates that the molecular gas is over-pressurized relative to the large-scale environment. We show that this over-pressurization can be explained by the clumpy nature of molecular gas; a revised estimate of $P_\mathrm{DE}$ on cloud scales, which accounts for molecular gas self-gravity, external gravity, and ambient pressure, agrees well with the observed $P_\mathrm{turb}$ in galaxy disks. We also find that molecular gas with cloud-scale ${P_\mathrm{turb}}\approx{P_\mathrm{DE}}\gtrsim{10^5\,k_\mathrm{B}\,\mathrm{K\,cm^{-3}}}$ in our sample is more likely to be self-gravitating, whereas gas at lower pressure appears more influenced by ambient pressure and/or external gravity. Furthermore, we show that the ratio between $P_\mathrm{turb}$ and the observed SFR surface density, $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$, is compatible with stellar feedback-driven momentum injection in most cases, while a subset of the regions may show evidence of turbulence driven by additional sources. The correlation between $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ and kpc-scale $P_\mathrm{DE}$ in galaxy disks is consistent with the expectation from self-regulated star formation models. We analyze the 1D spatial power spectra of dust surface density and mid to far-infrared emission at $24-500\,\mu$m in the LMC, SMC, M31, and M33. By forward-modelling the point-spread-function (PSF) on the power spectrum, we find that nearly all power spectra have a single power-law and point source component. A broken power-law model is only favoured for the LMC 24 $\mu$m MIPS power spectrum and is due to intense dust heating in 30 Doradus. We also test for local power spectrum variations by splitting the LMC and SMC maps into $820$ pc boxes. We find significant variations in the power-law index with no strong evidence for breaks. The lack of a ubiquitous break suggests that the spatial power spectrum does not constrain the disc scale height. This contradicts claims of a break where the turbulent motion changes from 3D to 2D. The power spectrum indices in the LMC, SMC, and M31 are similar ($2.0-2.5$). M33 has a flatter power spectrum ($1.3$), similar to more distant spiral galaxies with a centrally-concentrated H$_{2}$ distribution. We compare the power spectra of HI, CO, and dust in M31 and M33 and find that HI power spectra are consistently flatter than CO power spectra. These results cast doubt on the idea that the spatial power spectrum traces large scale turbulent motion in nearby galaxies. Instead, we find that the spatial power spectrum is influenced by (1) the PSF on scales below $\sim3$ times the FWHM, (2) bright compact regions (30 Doradus), and (3) the global morphology of the tracer (an exponential CO disc)., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 19 pgs, 10 figures. We present an atlas of ultraviolet and infrared images of ~15,750 local (d < 50 Mpc) galaxies, as observed by NASA's WISE and GALEX missions. These maps have matched resolution (FWHM 7.5'' and 15''), matched astrometry, and a common procedure for background removal. We demonstrate that they agree well with resolved intensity measurements and integrated photometry from previous surveys. This atlas represents the first part of a program (the z=0 Multi-wavelength Galaxy Synthesis) to create a large, uniform database of resolved measurements of gas and dust in nearby galaxies. The images and associated catalogs are publicly available at the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive. This atlas allows us estimate local and integrated star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M$_\star$) across the local galaxy population in a uniform way. In the appendix, we use the population synthesis fits of Salim et al. (2016, 2018) to calibrate integrated M$_\star$ and SFR estimators based on GALEX and WISE. Because they leverage an SDSS-base training set of >100,000 galaxies, these calibrations have high precision and allow us to rigorously compare local galaxies to Sloan Digital Sky Survey results. We provide these SFR and M$_\star$ estimates for all galaxies in our sample and show that our results yield a "main sequence" of star forming galaxies comparable to previous work. We present maps of the dust properties in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC, LMC) from fitting Spitzer and Herschel observations with the \citet{DL07} dust model. We derive the abundance of the small carbonaceous grain (or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; PAH) component. The global PAH fraction (q_pah, the fraction of the dust mass in the form of PAHs) is smaller in the SMC (1.0$^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$%) than in the LMC (3.3$^{+1.4}_{-1.3}$%). We measure the PAH fraction in different gas phases (H II regions, ionized gas outside of H II regions, molecular gas, and diffuse neutral gas). H II regions appear as distinctive holes in the spatial distribution of the PAH fraction. In both galaxies, the PAH fraction in the diffuse neutral medium is higher than in the ionized gas, but similar to the molecular gas. Even at equal radiation field intensity, the PAH fraction is lower in the ionized gas than in the diffuse neutral gas. We investigate the PAH life-cycle as a function of metallicity between the two galaxies. The PAH fraction in the diffuse neutral medium of the LMC is similar to that of the Milky Way ($\sim4.6$%), while it is significantly lower in the SMC. Plausible explanations for the higher PAH fraction in the diffuse neutral medium of the LMC compared to the SMC include: a more effective PAH production by fragmentation of large grains at higher metallicity, and/or the growth of PAHs in molecular gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We utilize archival far-infrared maps from the Herschel Space Observatory in four Local Group galaxies (Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, M31, and M33). We model their Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) from 100 to 500 $\mu$m using a single-temperature modified blackbody emission with a fixed emissivity index of $\beta = 1.8$. From the best-fit model, we derive the dust temperature, $T_{\rm d}$, and the dust mass surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm d}$, at 13 parsec resolution for SMC and LMC, and at 167 parsec resolution for all targets. This measurement allows us to build the distribution of dust mass and luminosity as functions of dust temperature and mass surface density. We compare those distribution functions among galaxies and between regions in a galaxy. We find that LMC has the highest mass-weighted average $T_{\rm d}$, while M31 and M33 have the lowest mass-weighted average $T_{\rm d}$. Within a galaxy, star forming regions have higher $T_{\rm d}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm d}$ relative to the overall distribution function, due to more intense heating by young stars and higher gas mass surface density. When we degrade the resolutions to mimic distant galaxies, the mass-weighted mean temperature gets warmer as the resolution gets coarser, meaning the temperature derived from unresolved observation is systematically higher than that in highly resolved observation. As an implication, the total dust mass is lower (underestimated) in coarser resolutions. The dust-to-metals ratio describes the fraction of the heavy elements contained in dust grains, and its variation provides key insights into the life cycle of dust. We measure the dust-to-metals ratio in M101, a nearby galaxy with a radial metallicity (Z) gradient spanning $\sim$1 dex. We fit the dust spectral energy distribution from 100 to 500 $\mu m$ with five variants of the modified blackbody dust emission model in which we vary the temperature distribution and how emissivity depends on wavelength. Among them, the model with a single temperature blackbody modified by a broken power-law emissivity gives the statistically best fit and physically most plausible results. Using these results, we show that the dust-to-gas ratio is proportional to $\rm Z^{1.7}$. This implies that the dust-to-metals ratio is not constant in M101, but decreases as a function of radius, equivalent to a lower fraction of metals trapped in dust at low metallicity (large radius). The dust-to-metals ratio in M101 remains at or above what would be predicted by the minimum depletion level of metals observed in the Milky Way. Our current knowledge of metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor suggests that variations in the conversion factor cannot be responsible for the dust-to-metals ratio trends we observe. This change of dust-to-metals ratio is significantly correlated with molecular hydrogen fraction, which suggests that the accretion of gas phase metals onto existing dust grains could be a mechanism contributing to a variable dust-to-metals ratio., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures; accepted by ApJ
