Objectives: Compare 30-day mortality rate following a proximal femur fracture (PFF) and SARS-CoV-2 infection versus a PFF and no SARS-CoV-2 infection. Design: Retrospective comparative study. Setting: Three university hospitals in Biscay province (Basque Country, Spain). Patients: 77 patients over 65 years-old with PFF (AO 31-A and 31-B). Intervention: Study conducted between 9 March and 15 April 2020. The COVID-19 group included only patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, confirmed by a positive RT-PCR test. Main outcome measurements: 30-day mortality rate and risk factors for mortality. Results: Of a total 77 patients, 10 were diagnosed with SARS CoV-2 infection. Mean age was 85 years. Patients with SARS-Cov-2 infection had higher BMI (29.53 kg/m2) compared to patients without infection (24.09 kg/m2) (p = 0.001). No significant differences were found between both groups in terms of the Charlson Comorbidity Index, ASA score, use of oral anticoagulants or presence of cognitive impairment. Seven of the 10 patients in the COVID-19 group developed (viral) pneumonia, as compared to one single case (1/67) of (bacterial) pneumonia in the control group (p 25 kg/m2 were significant predictors of 30-day mortality. All deaths in the COVID-19 group occurred while the patients were hospitalized. Conclusions: SARS CoV-2 infection in patients with a PFF was seen to result in higher rates of early mortality, with COVID-19-related pneumonia being the leading direct cause of mortality. Siete pacientes del grupo COVID-19 (7/10) desarrollaron neumonía (vírica), frente a un solo caso (1/67) de neumonía (bacteriana) en el grupo control (p 25 kg/m2 fueron predictores significativos de mortalidad a 30 días. Todas las muertes en el grupo COVID-19 ocurrieron intrahospitalariamente. The use of covers to protect blueberry orchards from adverse weather events has increased due to the variability in climate patterns, but the effects of rain covers and netting materials on yield and fruit quality have not been studied yet. This research evaluated the simultaneous effect of an LDPE plastic cover, a woven cover, and netting material on environmental components (UV light, PAR, NIR, and growing degree days (GDDs)), plant performance (light interception, leaf area index, LAI, yield, and flower development), and fruit quality traits (firmness, total soluble solids, and acidity) in two blueberry cultivars. On average, UV transmission under the netting was 11% and 43% higher compared to that under woven and LDPE plastic covers, while NIR transmission was 8-13% higher with both types of rain covers, with an increase in fruit air temperature and GDDs. Yield was 27% higher under the woven cover with respect to netting, but fruit firmness values under the netting were 12% higher than those of the LDPE plastic cover. Light interception, LAI, and flower development explained 64% ( p = 0.0052) of the yield variation due to the cover material's effect. The obtained results suggest that the type of cover differentially affects yield and fruit quality in blueberries due to the specific light and temperature conditions generated under these materials.

Background: Cementation of polyethylene liners into well-fixed cementless metal shells has become an option during revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). We report the results of cementing a dual-mobility (DM) component into a stable acetabular shell in high-risk patients undergoing revision THA., Methods: A single-centre series of 10 patients undergoing revision THA with a DM cup cemented into an existing well-fixed shell between 2012 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Failure due to aseptic loosening or instability and implant survival at last follow-up were analysed. The average age was 79.2 years and mean follow-up was 3.5 years. Indications were recurrent hip dislocation in 8 cases and intraoperative instability with moderate abductor insufficiency in 2 cases. In cases with recurrent dislocation, the aetiology of instability was classified by Wera type., Results: At the latest follow-up, Harris Hip Scores had improved from 49.3 preoperatively to 71.3 postoperatively ( p  = 0.098). In the 8 patients with recurrent dislocation, 4 cases (50%) had an unclear aetiology (Wera type 6), 2 (25%) abductor deficiency (Wera type 3) and 2 (25%) late polyethylene wear (type 5).Postoperative recurrent dislocation occurred in 1 hip (10%). No cases of intraprosthetic dislocation, aseptic loosening of the previous shell or dissociation at the cement-cup interface were identified., Conclusion: Although the follow-up of this series is short, cementation of a DM cup into a previous well-fixed socket seems to be a viable option to treat and prevent instability after revision THA, without providing constraint at the cement-cup interface.

This work investigates the formation of photoluminescence centres in high-transmission glass (HTG) doped with Cu(2)O and their capability to transform the solar spectrum by absorption/emission via Stokes-shifted PL into a more efficient spectrum for photovoltaic applications. Among the centres formed in HTG, both green photoluminescent Cu(+) and the non-photoluminescent Cu(2+) centres are created but their relative concentration depends on the thermal treatment and the presence of other co-dopants. The measurement of the absorption coefficient α(λ) nearby the HTG optical gap for Cu(+) bands is accomplished by following the two-thickness method. This procedure allows us to obtain the actual absorption coefficient for the spectrum of each formed centre, from which we obtain the relative concentration of Cu(+)/Cu(2+) as well as their absolute values. The analysis of the spectra provides information on the absorption cross sections, transition energies and bandwidths, the knowledge of which is essential to check the suitability of such centres for photovoltaic applications in solar cells.
