The contrast of an interference pattern during its registration with an 8-bit digital photodetector has been determined and a method for correcting distortions of the extrema of the interference fringes that are caused by speckle noise and the nonlinearity of the camera has been proposed. Frosted glasses were used as test objects to solve the problem. This method allows a significant extension of the dynamic range of the measured extrema, up to 1 : 50 (34 dB) and can be used to analyze interference patterns using low-cost 8-bit webcams with a measurement accuracy at the level of a linear (10–12)-bit converter.
