The pitting corrosion behaviour of 27%Cr–7%Ni (2707) hyper‐duplex stainless steel (HDSS) at ambient temperature has been assessed using a novel bipolar electrochemistry test set‐up. Application of this technique generates a linear potential gradient at the surface of the HDSS 2707 test piece, which allows assessment of the pitting corrosion behaviour at ambient temperature. Pit nucleation and associated growth kinetics can be obtained and characterised. To assess pitting corrosion in high‐alloyed HDSS, the normal bipolar test method had to be modified by superimposing an auxiliary potential. This new test set‐up was demonstrated by characterising the nucleation of pits and associated pit growth kinetics. The latter occurred either at austenite/ferrite interphase or inside ferrite phase, with pit growth within the ferrite phase in the HCl environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the effect of secondary-phase precipitation on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of 00Cr27Ni7Mo5N hyper-duplex stainless steel (HDSS) during solution treatment was investigated. The results reveal that σ-phase precipitates at the interface between the α and γ phase when the solution treatment temperature is lower than 1070 °C. It is not only brittle, but also prone to create a Cr-depleted zone, which significantly deteriorates the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. With the increase in the solution treatment temperature, the volume fraction of ferrite gradually increases. The yield strength and tensile strength increase slightly, but the elongation decreases. At the same time, the impact toughness shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. When the solution treatment temperature is higher than 1130 °C, Cr2N precipitates in the ferrite. The precipitation of Cr2N causes a decrease in the plastic toughness, but it does not deteriorate the mechanical properties as significantly as the σ phase. However, it can also cause the formation of a Cr-depleted zone that significantly decreases the corrosion resistance. There is no secondary-phase precipitation in the sample after solution treatment at 1100 °C, which shows the best mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HEAs have a direct impact on the formation of intermetallic compounds (IMC) formed by the interaction of iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al), and influence the size of the joint's interaction zone. A novel welding process for Fe-Al alloy joints was developed to prevent the development of a brittle iron-aluminum interface. This research involved investigation of the possibility of using HEA powdered filler. Fe5Co20Ni20Mn35Cu20 HEAs was used as a filler for the laser joining lap configuration joining hyper-duplex stainless steel UNS S33207 to aluminum alloy 6061. This HEA has unique properties, such as high strength, good ductility, and high resistance to corrosion and wear. A tiny portion of the stainless-steel area was melted by varying the welding parameters. The high-entropy alloy (HEA) with slow kinetic diffusion and large entropy was employed to aid in producing solid solution structures, impeding the blending of iron and aluminum particles and hindering the development of Fe-Al IMCs. The weld seam was created without the use of Fe-Al IMCs,. The specimen broke at the HEAs/Al alloy interface with a tensile-shear strength of 237 MPa. Hyper-duplex stainless steel castings of grade 7A of ASTM A-890 are comparatively new in duplex series, and their regular production has not yet been started like other super-duplex grades 5A and 6A. In view of this, a study has been undertaken to find out the properties of this grade under different experimental conditions. Tensile properties and hardness are found to be higher than other super-duplex grades; however, impact values at − 50 °C are lower than grade 6A. Pitting corrosion, critical pitting temperature and intergranular corrosion tests were carried out as per ASTM standard. Potentiodynamic polarization scan was carried out and compared with 6A. Deleterious phases were formed by holding samples for a shorter time at 1000 °C with a corresponding increase in hardness and drop in ferrite content. 475 °C embrittlement effect was studied and compared with other duplex grades. Re-dissolution of harmful precipitates was carried out at 550 °C by varying time to study any change in properties. Some of the properties of grade 7A were compared with wrought product of hyper-duplex grade, UNS S32707. Low-temperature impact values of hot-worked cast 7A test block were improved considerably in both longitudinal and transverse direction. Dry sliding wear resistance test was carried out as per ASTM standard, and values were found to be better than grade 6A. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hyper‐duplex stainless steel (HDSS) 2707 is a competitive material for application in extremely caustic environments. In this study, different annealing temperatures ranging from 1020°C to 1200°C were examined by electrochemical tests and microstructure analysis. The microstructure characterization indicated that precipitations were detected when the annealing temperature was below 1050°C and a relatively balanced austenite–ferrite phase structure was obtained at 1100°C. Through electrochemical measurements in NaBr solution, it was revealed that with the increase of temperature the pitting resistance of HDSS 2707 first rose then declined, peaking at 1100°C. The highest critical pitting temperature was about 67°C. In addition, the pitting position shifted from austenite phase to austenite–ferrite boundary and finally to ferrite interior with the annealing temperature increasing, which was in agreement with the pitting resistance equivalent values (PREN) of the two phases. UNS S32707 hyper-duplex stainless steel (HDSS) parts with complex shapes for ocean engineering were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) process. In the process of SLM, the balance between austenite and ferrite was undermined due to the high melting temperature and rapid cooling rate, resulting in poor ductility and toughness. The solution annealing was carried out with various temperatures (1050−1200 °C) for one hour at a time. The evolution of microstructures, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of UNS S32707 samples prepared by SLM was comprehensively investigated. The results indicate that a decrease in nitrogen content during the SLM process reduced the content of austenite, and a nearly balanced microstructure was obtained after appropriate solution annealing. The ratio between ferrite and austenite was approximately 59.5:40.5. The samples with solution treated at 1150 °C and 1100 °C exhibited better comprehensive mechanical properties and pitting resistance, respectively.

UNS S32707 hyper-duplex stainless steel (HDSS) was prepared by powder injection molding (PIM) and supersolidus liquid-phase sintering from powder prepared by a plasma rotating-electrode process, and the nitrogen content and relative density of the sintered parts were 0.37% and 97.9%, respectively. The densification and nitrogen content of sintered parts at different sintering temperatures in a nitrogen atmosphere were studied. The results indicate that the relative density increased gradually, whereas the nitrogen content of the sintered parts decreased gradually with increasing sintering temperature under the nitrogen pressure of 0.2 bar. The parts sintered at 1400 °C for 1.5 h exhibited ideal sintering relative density and nitrogen content. After solution treatment at 1150 °C for 1 h, the ratio of ferrite to austenite was approximately 46.8:51.8; the measured tensile strength, the yield strength, the elongation and the hardness were 761 MPa, 529 MPa, 14%, and 321.4 HV, respectively. The samples prepared by PIM can achieve full densification followed by hot isostatic pressing and solution treatment, and its tensile strength and elongation are significantly improved, which is better than that of casting.
