Volunteers over 20 years of age without apparent ophthalmic abnormalities were examined with the SITA-S central 30-2 program followed by the Dynamic 32 program. Eye with corrected visual acuity ≥0.8, refraction ≥ −6.0 diopters, and fields with satisfactory levels of reliability in SITA-S and Dynamic were selected.Results: Sixty-seven eyes from 67 normal individuals of mean age 51.3 ± 16.3 (range 22–76) years satisfied the selection criteria and were analyzed. Mean retinal sensitivity was significantly (P < 0.0001) higher with SITA-S (29.0 ± 2.4 dB) than with Dynamic (26.8 ± 2.1 dB). Changes in retinal sensitivity with increasing age were significantly (P = 0.0003) greater with Dynamic (−0.09 ± 0.04 dB/year; 95% confidence interval [CI] −0.10 to −0.08 dB/year) than with SITA-S (−0.07 ± 0.04 dB/year, 95% CI −0.08 to −0.06 dB/year). When classifying the visual field into three areas (central, mid-peripheral, and peripheral), retinal sensitivities with SITA-S were significantly higher in all areas than with Dynamic (P < 0.0001 for all three areas).Conclusion: Differences in Dynamic and SITA-S strategies may contribute to the differences in retinal sensitivities observed in normal individuals.Keywords: time-saving strategy, frequency-of-seeing curve, dynamic, Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm Standard, Octopus perimeter, Humphrey field analyzer

Introduction: Asa part of the Hayabusa2 initial analysis [1], we analyzed eighteen Ryugu "stone" samples of 1 ~ 8 mm in size: seven stones from the 1st touch down site and eleven from the 2nd touch down site. Ryugu stones were analyzed first using X-rays. UV, visible, near-infrared mid-infrared, and mutes probes for surface reflectance spectra, internal 3D structure and element distribution [2], crystal structures, and bulk composition of light elements such as C, N, and 0. Measurements for magnetic, thermal, and physical properties mine some stones were also performed. TOF-SDIS analysis of fluid inclusions is being continued [3]. Small particles separated from some stones were ana-lyzed by IR-CT [4]. Based on 3D-CT images of individual stones, objects of interests were identified, separated by pFIE cutting, and exposed by polishing on the surface of epoxy disks. FE.EPMAJFE-SEM analysis was made on ~40 polished epoxy disks for chemical composition and textural observation [5-9]. FIB sections and small (~15 μ in diameter) fragments were separated from the polished surface and analyzed by rod, S170.1, XRF, and nano-CT. Results and discussion: Eighteen stone 2D and 3D images indicate that Ryon samples are breccias of small fragments (< ~1mm in size) of basically CI chondrite mineralogy [10]. Most of the fragments are heavily altered and consists mainly of phyllosilicates. carbonates (dolomite and brannerite), Fe sulfides and oxides, and phosphates (F-bearing hydroxyapatite); this mineralogy we call the major lithology. The mineralogy of the fragments of the major lithology shows some diversity. the abundance and shape of carbonates and phosphates differ among fragments. On the other band, some fragments in many stones are less altered and contain anhydrous silicates such as olivine and low-Ca pyroxene of typically Mr#>97 but down to Mg#~50, which we call the less-altered litbology. In the less-altered lithology, the abundance of olivine and pyroxene differs between fragments and some fragments contain them up to - 10 volti. Therefore, fragments with the less-altered lithology can be classified as CL-type thou-drite material. Most, but not all. fragments with the less-altered lithology contain only calcite as carbonate, phosphides (FeNi)3P and (Fe, Ni)2P instead of apatite. and poorly-crystallized amorphous silicates. Small (<20μm in size) type-I barred and porphyritic chondrules and CAI with spinel+hibonite-tennskite assemblages also occur. GaIS-ble ob-jects are abundant in the least-altered fragments. In summary, mineralogical and physical properties of Ryugu samples reveal incipient to advanced aqueous alteration in its parent asteroid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aims to quantify changes in renal blood flow before and after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) using four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and evaluate its correlation with renal impairment., Methods: In this retrospective analysis, 18 patients underwent elective EVAR for infrarenal fusiform abdominal aortic aneurysms using Excluder or Endurant endografts. 4D flow MRI scans were conducted before and 1-4 days after EVAR. Hemodynamics were quantified at the suprarenal aorta (SupAo), bilateral renal arteries (RRA and LRA), and infrarenal aorta (InfAo). Cardiac phase-resolved blood flow values (BFVs), relative flow distribution (RFD), and flow change rates (FCRs) were assessed. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was measured pre- and postoperatively., Results: A total of 16 patients were analyzed after excluding two outliers. Pre-EVAR BFVs were 23.1 ± 8.3, 3.7 ± 1.3, 3.4 ± 1.2, and 15.1 ± 5.9 mL/cycle, while post-EVAR BFVs were 20.9 ± 6.9, 3.8 ± 1.1, 3.2 ± 0.9, and 12.1 ± 4.3 mL/cycle in SupAo, RRA, LRA, and InfAo, respectively. Comparing Excluder (N = 8) and Endurant (N = 8), the total renal FCR was 121.8% [106.6-144.7] versus 101.3% [63.8-121.8] ( p = 0.110), suggesting a potential improvement in renal blood flow with the Excluder, although not statistically significant. A significant correlation was found between the total renal FCR and the relative eGFR at 6 months (Spearman correlation coefficient, 0.789; p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The endografts, particularly the Excluder, showed potential in improving renal artery blood flow in some patients. The significant correlation between the total renal FCR and the relative eGFR at 6 months suggests that acute hemodynamic alterations induced by EVAR may impact post-operative renal function. Background: Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is thought to arise from stagnant blood flow, yet conclusive evidence is lacking. Relative residence time (RRT) assessed using 4D Flow MRI may offer insight into portal flow stagnation., Purpose: To explore the relationship between RRT values and the presence of PVT in cirrhotic participants., Study Type: Prospective., Population: Forty-eight participants with liver cirrhosis (27 males, median age 67 years [IQR: 57-73]) and 20 healthy control participants (12 males, median age 45 years [IQR: 40-54])., Field Strength/sequence: 3 T/4D Flow MRI., Assessment: Laboratory (liver and kidney function test results and platelet count) and clinical data (presence of tumors and other imaging findings), and portal hemodynamics derived from 4D Flow MRI (spatiotemporally averaged RRT [RRT-mean], flow velocity, and flow rate) were analyzed., Statistical Tests: We used multivariable logistic regression, adjusted by selected covariates through the Lasso method, to explore whether RRT-mean is an independent risk factor for PVT. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was also calculated to assess the model's discriminative ability. P < 0.05 indicated statistical significance., Results: The liver cirrhosis group consisted of 16 participants with PVT and 32 without PVT. Higher RRT-mean values (odds ratio [OR] 11.4 [95% CI: 2.19, 118]) and lower platelet count (OR 0.98 per 1000 μL [95% CI: 0.96, 0.99]) were independent risk factors for PVT. The incorporation of RRT-mean (AUC, 0.77) alongside platelet count (AUC, 0.75) resulted in an AUC of 0.84. When including healthy control participants, RRT-mean had an adjusted OR of 12.4 and the AUC of the combined model (RRT-mean and platelet count) was 0.90., Data Conclusion: Prolonged RRT values and low platelet count were significantly associated with the presence of PVT in cirrhotic participants. Background Percutaneous transhepatic portal vein (PV) embolization (PVE) is a standard preoperative procedure for advanced biliary cancer when the future liver remnant (FLR) is insufficient, yet the effect of this procedure on portal hemodynamics is still unclear. Purpose To assess whether four-dimensional (4D) MRI flowmetry can be used to estimate FLR volume and to identify the optimal time for this measurement. Materials and Methods This prospective single-center study enrolled consecutive adult patients with biliary cancer who underwent percutaneous transhepatic PVE for the right liver between June 2020 and November 2022. Portal hemodynamics were assessed using 4D flow MRI before PVE and within 1 day (0-day group) or 3-4 days (3-day group) after PVE. FLR volume was measured using CT before PVE and after PVE but before surgery. Blood flow changes were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed rank test, and correlations with Spearman rank correlation. Results The 0-day group included 24 participants (median age, 72 years [IQR, 69-77 years]; 17 male participants), and the 3-day group included 13 participants (median age, 71 years [IQR, 68-78 years]; eight male participants). Both groups showed increased left PV (LPV) flow rate after PVE (0-day group: from median 3.72 mL/sec [IQR, 2.83-4.55 mL/sec] to 9.48 mL/sec [IQR, 8.12-10.7 mL/sec], P < .001; 3-day group: from median 3.65 mL/sec [IQR, 2.14-3.79 mL/sec] to 8.16 mL/sec [IQR, 6.82-8.98 mL/sec], P < .001). LPV flow change correlated with FLR volume change relative to the number of days from PVE to presurgery CT only in the 3-day group (ρ = 0.62, P = .02; 0-day group, P = .11). The output of the regression equation for estimating presurgery FLR volume correlated with CT-measured volume (ρ = 0.78; P = .002). Conclusion Four-dimensional flow MRI demonstrated increased blood flow in residual portal branches 3-4 days after PVE, offering insights for estimating presurgery FLR volume. Purpose: To elucidate MRI features of primary hepatic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, particularly, the "speckled enhancement" on gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced MRI., Methods: The institutional review board approved this retrospective observational study and waived informed consent. Using our picture archiving and communication systems and electronic medical records, five patients histopathologically diagnosed as hepatic MALT lymphoma and clinically confirmed as primary lesions who had undergone dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-CT and DCE-MRI with Gd-EOB-DTPA were identified from September 2009 to December 2020. Two radiologists assessed their CT and MRI data in consensus with a pathologist's advice., Results: Overall, five lesions in five patients were included in this study. Precontrast CT showed hypoattenuation in all lesions. In the arterial phase of DCE-CT, four lesions (80%) showed hyperattenuation, whereas all lesions showed iso- to hypoattenuation in the delayed phase. A vessel penetration sign was also observed in all lesions. On MRI, all lesions showed hypointensity on T1-weighted images, hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, and restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted images. Both DCE-CT and DCE-MRI with Gd-EOB-DTPA showed similar enhancement patterns, except for the hepatocyte phase. Notably, however, four out of five lesions showed characteristic "speckled enhancement" that refers to punctate positive enhancements within the low signal lesions on the hepatobiliary phase of Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI pathologically confirmed to be hepatocyte clusters that remained in the tumor., Conclusion: Primary hepatic MALT lymphomas were characterized by arterial phase enhancement, restricted diffusion, vessel penetration sign, and more specifically "speckled enhancement" in the hepatobiliary phase of DCE-MRI with Gd-EOB-DTPA.

We analyzed 4 cases who experienced extravasation of anthracyclines and had dexrazoxane therapy in our hospital. Concerned drugs were 2 adriamycin and 2 amrubicin cases and all cases received steroid ointment therapy, and no cases showed severe condition such as skin ulcer. As dexrazoxane is known to enhance bone marrow suppression of anti-cancer drugs, the nadir of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia was observed from day 10 to 17 in our cases. We made a domestic manual and have used in various professionals. Dexrazoxane would contribute to the reduction of skin damage due to extravasation if we could manage bone marrow suppression successfully.

Background: Although endovascular aneurysmal repair (EVAR) is a preferred treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) owing to its low invasiveness, its impact on the local hemodynamics has not been fully assessed., Purpose: To elucidate how EVAR affects the local hemodynamics in terms of energy loss (EL)., Study Type: Prospective single-arm study., Field Strength/sequence: A 3.0 T/4D flow MRI using a phase-contrast three-dimensional cine-gradient-echo sequence., Population: A total of 13 consecutive patients (median [interquartile range] age: 77.0 [73.0, 78.8] years, 11 male) scheduled for EVAR as an initial treatment for fusiform AAA., Assessment: 4D flow MRI covering the abdominal aorta and bilateral common iliac arteries and the corresponding stent-graft (SG) lumen was performed before and after EVAR. Plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) was measured within 1 week before and 1 month after EVAR. The hemodynamic data, including mean velocity and the local EL, were compared pre-/post-EVAR. EL was correlated with AAA neck angle and with BNP. Patients were subdivided into deformed (N = 5) and undeformed SG subgroups (N = 8) and pre-/post-EVAR BNP compared in each., Statistics: Parametric or nonparametric methods. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (r). The interobserver/intraobserver variabilities with Bland-Altman plots. A P value < 0.05 is considered significant., Results: The mean velocity (cm/sec) at the AAA was five times greater after EVAR: 4.79 ± 0.32 vs. 0.91 ± 0.02. The total EL (mW) increased by 1.7 times after EVAR: 0.487 (0.420, 0.706) vs. 0.292 (0.192, 0.420). The total EL was proportional to the AAA neck angle pre-EVAR (r = 0.691) and post-EVAR (r = 0.718). BNP (pg/mL) was proportional to the total EL post-EVAR (r = 0.773). In the deformed SG group, EL (0.349 [0.261, 0.416]) increased 2.4-fold to 0.848 (0.597, 1.13), and the BNP 90.3 (53.6, 105) to 100 (67.2, 123) post-EVAR., Conclusion: The local EL showed a 1.7-fold increase after EVAR. Objective: This cross-sectional observational study aimed to assess gait performance, its correlation with physical functions, and its dual-task costs in children with Down syndrome (DS), to investigate their gait adaptations., Methods: Gait performance with or without movie-watching tasks was evaluated in 17 children with DS (age, 6-12 years) and 51 age- and sex-matched controls, using three-dimensional gait analysis. We compared participants' demographics, physical functions, and gait performance without tasks between the two groups. In the DS group, correlations between physical functions, the intelligence quotient, and gait variables were assessed. Dual-task costs for gait variables were also compared between the two groups., Results: Children with DS showed poorer balance function and muscle strength and lower gait quality than the control group. In the DS group, there was a significant positive correlation between gait speed, step length, and intelligence quotient. There were no correlations between the balance function, muscle strength, intelligence quotient, and gait quality. A man in his 50s with Budd-Chiari syndrome diagnosed with the suprahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction on CT was assessed using 4D Flow MRI before and after balloon angioplasty. 4D Flow MRI acquired in two respiratory phases, depicted complex hemodynamic and respiratory variability, and a jet stream at the narrowed channel of the membranous IVC. Post-interventional 4D Flow MRI showed that the IVC blood flow increased with corrected flow directions in the infrarenal IVC.

Thus far, ultrasound, CT, and 2D cine phase-contrast MRI has been adopted to evaluate blood flow and vascular morphology in the portal venous system; however, all these techniques have some shortcomings, such as limited field of view and difficulty in accurately evaluating blood flow. A new imaging technique, namely 3D cine phase-contrast (4D Flow) MRI, can acquire blood flow data of the entire abdomen at once and in a time-resolved manner, allowing visual, quantitative, and comprehensive assessment of blood flow in the portal venous system. In addition, a retrospective blood flow analysis, i.e., "retrospective flowmetry," is possible. Although the development of 4D Flow MRI for the portal system has been delayed compared to that for the arterial system owing to the lower flow velocity of the portal venous system and the presence of respiratory artifacts, several useful reports have recently been published as the technology has advanced. In the first part of this narrative review article, technical considerations of image acquisition and analysis methods of 4D Flow MRI for the portal venous system and the validations of their results are described. We report on the synergic effect of surfactants and chelating agents on the mechanism to remove stubborn keratin grime (keratin-Ca), which is bound with calcium ions and one of the most difficult grimes to remove, in order to make it easier to clean bathtubs in less time and with less scrubbing. Our approach was to focus on keratin swelling, which we achieved by applying aqueous solutions with chelating agents and anionic surfactants, the combination of which greatly improved the swelling ratio, resulting in quick, easy removal of keratin-Ca with water rinsing and little scrubbing. For the swelling process, we added chelating agents and anionic surfactants to swell the keratin-Ca by both capturing calcium ions and improving solution permeation. Furthermore, we measured the structural change of the keratin-Ca during swelling by TD-NMR and confirmed that a certain combination of chelating agent and anionic surfactant improved swelling by affecting not only the amorphous part such as the keratin matrix, but also the crystalline part such as the intermediate filaments (IFs).

We present a case of a patient who underwent portal vein (PV) stenting for PV stenosis after a living-donor liver transplantation. A pretreatment 3D cine phase-contrast (4D-flow) MRI showed decreased, though hepatopetal, blood flow in the PV. After stenting, 4D-flow MRI confirmed an improvement in PV flow, with a more homogeneous flow distribution to each hepatic segment. 4D-flow MRI are valuable for understanding the hemodynamics of this area, planning for treatments, and evaluating the outcome of the interventions.

(R-)miniCHOP therapy, which delivers approximately half-doses of the (R-)CHOP regimen, has shown efficacy and safety in patients who are more than 80 years old. This study aimed to compare the area under the plasma concentration-time curves (AUCs) of vincristine (VCR), doxorubicin (DXR), and cyclophosphamide (CPA) between (R-)CHOP and (R-)miniCHOP regimens. The AUCs were compared between patients aged 65-79 years receiving (R-)CHOP therapy and those aged 80 years and older receiving (R-)miniCHOP therapy. Age was not an independent variable for predicting the dose-adjusted AUCs (AUC/Ds) of cytotoxic anticancer drugs. The median AUCs of DXR and CPA were significantly smaller in the (R-)miniCHOP group than in the (R-)CHOP group (168.7 vs. 257.9 ng h/mL, P = 0.003, and 219.9 vs. 301.7 µg h/mL, P = 0.020, respectively). The median AUCs of VCR showed the same trend but the difference was not significant (24.83 vs. 34.85 ng h/mL, P = 0.135). It is possible that the AUCs of VCR, DXR, and CPA in patients aged 80 years and older receiving (R-)miniCHOP therapy may be lower than those in patients 65-79 years old receiving (R-)CHOP therapy.

Throughout the history of the solar system, Mars has experienced continuous asteroidal impacts. These impacts have produced impact-generated Mars ejecta, and a fraction of this debris is delivered to Earth as Martian meteorites. Another fraction of the ejecta is delivered to the moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos. Here, we studied the amount and condition of recent delivery of impact ejecta from Mars to its moons. Using state-of-the-art numerical approaches, we report, for the first time, that materials delivered from Mars to its moons are physically and chemically different from the Martian meteorites, which are all igneous rocks with a limited range of ages. We show that Mars ejecta mixed in the regolith of its moons potentially covers all its geological eras and consists of all types of rocks, from sedimentary to igneous. A Martian moons sample-return mission will bring such materials back to Earth, and the samples will provide a wealth of "time-resolved" geochemical information about the evolution of Martian surface environments.

This paper presents a case study of microbe transportation in the Mars-satellites system. We examined the spatial distribution of potential impact-transported microbes on the Martian moons using impact physics by following a companion study (Fujita et al., in this issue). We used sterilization data from the precede studies (Patel et al., 2018; Summers, 2017). We considered that the microbes came mainly from the Zunil crater on Mars, which was formed during 1.0-0.1 Ma. We found that 70-80% of the microbes are likely to be dispersed all over the moon surface and are rapidly sterilized due to solar and galactic cosmic radiation except for those microbes within a thick ejecta deposit produced by natural meteoroids. The other 20-30% might be shielded from radiation by thick regolith layers that formed at collapsed layers in craters produced by Mars rock impacts. The total number of potentially surviving microbes at the thick ejecta deposits is estimated to be 3-4 orders of magnitude lower than at the Mars rock craters. The microbe concentration is irregular in the horizontal direction due to Mars rock bombardment and is largely depth-dependent due to the radiation sterilization. The surviving fraction of transported microbes would be only ∼1 ppm on Phobos and ∼100 ppm on Deimos, suggesting that the transport processes and radiation severely affect microbe survival. The microbe sampling probability from the Martian moons was also investigatesd. We suggest that sample return missions from the Martian moons are classified into Unrestricted Earth-Return missions for 30 g samples and 10 cm depth sampling, even in our conservative scenario. We also conducted a full statistical analysis pertaining to sampling the regolith of Phobos to include the effects of uncertainties in input parameters on the sampling probability. Potential microbial contamination of Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, which can be brought about by transportation of Mars ejecta produced by meteoroid impacts on the Martian surface, has been comprehensively assessed in a statistical approach, based on the most probable history of recent major gigantic meteoroid collisions on the Martian surface. This article is the first part of our study to assess potential microbial density in Mars ejecta departing from the Martian atmosphere, as a source of the second part (Kurosawa et al., 2019) where statistical analysis of microbial contamination probability is conducted. Potential microbial density on the Martian surface as the source of microorganisms was estimated by analogy to the terrestrial areas having the similar arid and cold environments, from which a probabilistic function was deduced as the asymptotic limit. Microbial survival rate during hypervelocity meteoroid collisions was estimated by numerical analysis of impact phenomena with and without taking internal friction and plastic deformation of the colliding meteoroid and the target ground into consideration. Trajectory calculations of departing ejecta through the Martian atmosphere were conducted with taking account of aerodynamic deceleration and heating by the aid of computational fluid dynamic analysis. It is found that Mars ejecta smaller than 0.03 m in diameter hardly reach the Phobos orbit due to aerodynamic deceleration, or mostly sterilized due to significant aerodynamic heating even though they can reach the Phobos orbit and beyond. Producing structural viscosity in colloidal dispersions, such as vesicles and capsules, prevents separation of dispersed particles by increasing the viscosity between them, which is advantageous in terms of usability. So far, the separation behavior of various particles has been studied; however, there are very few examples wherein a stable dispersion state was constructed and controlled. In this study, we produced stable dispersions induced by the depletion effect in mixtures of vesicles of cationic surfactant derived from triethanolamine-based esterquat (TEQ) and a specific dextrin derivative (SDD) as a non-adsorptive polymer. In the composition region, where 8 to 16% of TEQ vesicles and 1.2% or less of SDDs were mixed, the viscosity increased proportionally with the particle concentration, and it was observed that stable dispersions were produced by structural viscosity. Furthermore, the effects of TEQ and SDD concentrations, and SDD size on the structural viscosity and cohesive energy were investigated, which were similar to the depletion effect in the Asakura-Oosawa (AO) theory. From the results, it was suggested that the structural viscosity of the mixed dispersions (TEQ vesicles and SDDs) was produced by the aggregated TEQ vesicle networks induced by the depletion flocculation.

Objective: To compare magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) metabolite ratios in preterm infants at term-equivalent age with those in term infants and to evaluate the association between MRS metabolites and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 18 months corrected age in preterm infants., Design: We studied infants born at a gestational age <37 weeks and weighing <1500 g during 2009-2013 using MRS at term-equivalent age. Infants with major brain abnormalities were excluded. The ratios of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) to creatine (Cre), NAA to choline-containing compounds (Cho) and Cho to Cre in the frontal white matter and thalamus were measured using multivoxel point-resolved proton spectroscopy sequence. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were assessed at 18 months corrected age., Results: Thirty-three preterm infants and 16 term infants were enrolled in this study. Preterm infants with normal development at 18 months showed significantly lower NAA/Cho ratios in the frontal white matter than term infants. There were no differences in the Cre/Cho ratios between preterm and term infants. At 18 months corrected age, 9 preterm infants with a mild developmental delay showed significantly lower NAA/Cho ratios in the thalamus than 24 preterm infants with normal development., Conclusions: Preterm infants at term-equivalent age showed reduced MRS metabolites (NAA/Cho) compared with term infants. Trisomy 13 (T13) is accompanied by severe complications, and it can be challenging to achieve long-term survival without aggressive treatment. However, recently, some patients with T13 have been receiving home care. We conducted this study to investigate factors related to home health-care transition for patients with T13.We studied 28 patients with T13 born between January 2000 and December 2014. We retrospectively compared nine home care transition patients (the home care group) and 19 patients that died during hospitalization (the discharge at death group). The median gestational age of the patients was 36.6 weeks, with a median birth weight of 2,047 g. Currently, three patients (11%) have survived, and 25 (89%) have died. The home care group exhibited a significantly longer gestational age (38.9 vs. 36.3 weeks, p = 0.039) and significantly larger occipitofrontal circumference Z score (-0.04 vs. -0.09, p = 0.019). Congenital heart defects (CHD) was more frequent in the discharge at death group, with six patients in the home care group and 18 patients in the discharge at death group (67% vs. 95%, p = 0.047), respectively. Survival time was significantly longer in the home care group than in the discharge at death group (171 vs. 19 days, p = 0.012). Alveolar bone - the bony ridge containing the tooth sockets - stands out by its remodeling activity where bone is being formed and resorbed at a much higher rate than in any other bony tissue. Teeth that are anchored in the jaw through the periodontal ligament exert very large localized loads during mastication that could lead to a unique adaptation of the collagen/mineral structure in the bone. Our aim was to characterize the nanostructure of alveolar bone and to determine the influence of diabetes on structural characteristics of the mineralized matrix. Using small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), we studied a spontaneous diabetic mouse model (KK+) and its corresponding healthy controls (KK-) (n=6) to determine the size and mutual alignment of the mineral nanoparticles embedded in the collagen matrix. On cross-sections (buccal-lingual) of the first molar multiple line scans with a spatial resolution of 30μm were performed on each sample, from the lingual to the buccal side of the mandible. Mineral particle thickness and length are decreasing towards the tooth in both buccal and lingual sides of alveolar bone. While mineral particles are well aligned with the long axis of the tooth on the buccal side, they are in a quarter of the measurements oriented along two preferred directions on the lingual side. These nanostructural differences can be interpreted as the result of an asymmetric loading during mastication, leading to a tilting of the tooth in its socket. Using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and viscometry, we have investigated the hydration behavior, static structures, Brownian dynamics, and mechanical properties of aqueous solutions of alcohol ethoxylate (C12E15) and methyl ester ethoxylate (C12MEE), hereafter abbreviated as AE and MEE, respectively, in which we especially focus on the effects of the endcaps of these nonionic surfactants. We find that AE and MEE exhibit fairly different phase behaviors in water: AE produces liquid crystalline phases at w (surfactant weight fraction) > 0.35, whereas MEE retains a liquid phase in an extremely wide concentration range (w < 0.7) at ambient temperature. The structure factor deduced from SAXS intensities using a generalized indirect Fourier transformation technique and the effective hydration number evaluated from the negative excess bulk water relaxation amplitude revealed by DRS unambiguously demonstrate that hydration water molecules, exhibiting about 4-times-slower collective reorientational dynamics than that of bulk water, contribute to the excluded volume of the micelles. The blocked terminal hydrogen-bond donor/acceptor site of MEE leads to smaller hydration number of MEE than compared to that of AE, and consequently the lower excluded volume of the MEE micelles. The effective micellar volume fraction, ϕ(eff), should be defined by incorporating such different hydration effects. Importantly, voluminosity, defined as the micellar volume fraction per unit mass, is clearly a decreasing function of w, demonstrating progressive dehydration at a higher w. The collective diffusion constants determined by DLS for the AE and MEE micelles show a monotonous increase up to ϕ(eff) ≈ 0.5, as expected for the hard spheres. Low-shear-rate viscosities follow a Krieger-Dougherty model in the identical micellar packing fraction range. All static, dynamic, and mechanical properties of these micellar solutions can be explained in a consistent and quantitative manner only when the excluded volume of hydration water molecules is properly taken into account.

Purpose: To evaluate dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) features of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) containing areas of iso- or hypoattenuation and the relationship with pathological grading., Materials and Methods: Between June 2006 and March 2014, 61 PNETs in 58 consecutive patients (29 male, 29 female; median-age 55 years), which were surgically diagnosed, underwent preoperative dynamic contrast-enhanced CT. PNETs were classified based on contrast enhancement patterns in the pancreatic phase: iso/hypo-PNETs were defined as tumors containing areas of iso- or hypoattenuation except for cystic components, and hyper-PNETs were tumors showing hyperattenuation over the whole area. CT findings and contrast-enhancement patterns of the tumors were evaluated retrospectively by two radiologists and compared with the pathological grading., Results: Iso/hypo-PNETs comprised 26 tumors, and hyper-PNETs comprised 35 tumors. Not only hyper-PNETs but also most iso/hypo-PNETs showed peak enhancement in the pancreatic phase and a washout from the portal venous phase to the delayed phase. Iso/hypo-PNETs showed larger tumor size than the hyper-PNETs (mean, 3.7 cm vs. 1.6 cm; P<0.001), and were significantly correlated with unclear tumor margins (n=4 vs. n=0; P=0.029), the existence of cystic components (n=10 vs. n=3; P=0.006), intratumoral blood vessels in the early arterial phase (n=13 vs. n=3; P<0.001), and a smooth rim enhancement in the delayed phase (n=12 vs. n=6; P=0.019). Iso/hypo-PNETs also showed significantly higher pathological grading (WHO 2010 classification; iso/hypo, G1=14, G2=11, G3=1; hyper, G1=34, G2=1; P<0.001)., Conclusion: PNETs containing iso/hypo-areas showed a rapid enhancement pattern as well as hyper-PNETs, various radiological features and higher malignant potential., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Background: The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical efficiency of portal vein (PV) stenting when performed with preoperative percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization (PTPVE) in patients with severe PV stenosis due to tumor invasion., Methods: Between 2007 and 2013, four consecutive patients (one male, three females; mean age, 52 years; age range, 25-73 years) with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and PV stenosis underwent PTPVE and PV stenting. Patients were analyzed with regard to the procedure, hypertrophy of the future remnant liver (FRL), and plasma clearance rate of indocyanine green by the FRL (ICGK-F). Further, the %FRL volume increase in PTPVE was compared between the stenting group and the usual PTPVE group who have perihilar cholangiocarcinomas without PV stenosis., Results: Preoperative PTPVE with PV stenting was successfully performed and portal flow to the FRL improved after stenting in all four patients. The %FRL volume increase was 18-60% (mean, 34%) in the stenting group and was 12-51% (mean, 21%) in the usual PTPVE group. The ICGK-F value after PTPVE exceeded 0.05 in all four patients. All patients achieved R0 resection., Conclusions: Preoperative PTPVE with PV stenting appears to be feasible in cases of severe PV tumor invasion and stenosis. O/W nano-emulsions can be used as effective drug carriers of hydrophobic active ingredients in an aqueous solution, because nano-emulsions are comparatively stable and their structure can be controlled by changing the compositions and the preparation methods. In this paper, we focused on vitamin A and its derivatives (VA), which are among the widely-used lipophilic active ingredients, and tried to develop the nano-emulsions, which can bring out the efficiency of VA for the healing of injured corneas, with the detailed structural analysis of them using the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method. As a result, we elucidated that the nano-emulsions bearing the hydrophobic oil/water interface can be prepared by decreasing the surfactant concentration against vitamins. Moreover, we clarified that the nano-emulsions composed of lower surfactant concentration tend to adsorb VA onto the corneal epithelial cells-model interface. Therefore it is necessary to prepare the nano-emulsions, which have the hydrophobic oil/water interface for improving the adsorbability onto cell membranes.

Purpose: To compare left adrenal venous sampling (AVS) in two locations: the central adrenal vein and the common trunk., Materials and Methods: A total of 22 patients (12 men and 10 women; mean age, 50 y; range, 26-65 y) who were suspected of having primary aldosteronism (PA) and underwent successful AVS with cortisol concentration measurement and/or venography between November 2010 and August 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. In regard to the left adrenal vein, collections were done at two locations: at the common trunk below the confluence of the inferior phrenic vein and at the central adrenal vein, which was above the confluence. The effects of the inflow from the inferior phrenic vein on plasma aldosterone and cortisol levels were analyzed., Results: Eight patients had bilateral hypersecreting lesions and 13 had a unilateral lesion. One was diagnosed as having secondary hypertension other than PA. The median cortisol levels below and above the confluence were 129 μg/dL (range, 21-400 μg/dL) and 215 μg/dL (range, 21-690 μg/dL), respectively. The median aldosterone levels were 2,120 pg/mL (range, 164-42,700 pg/mL) and 4,275 pg/mL (range, 119-59,000 pg/mL), respectively. The median aldosterone/cortisol (A/C) ratios were 244 (range, 34-2,401) and 278 (range, 25-2,251), respectively. Cortisol and aldosterone levels were significantly higher above the confluence (P = .0050 and P = .0003, respectively), whereas the A/C ratio showed no significant difference (P = .12)., Conclusions: Although higher levels of cortisol and aldosterone were obtained upstream, A/C ratio was not significantly different between the central adrenal vein and the common trunk., (Copyright © 2013 SIR. We investigated the location of cholesterol (Chol) in liposomes and its interaction with phospholipids using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) data and applying the generalized indirect Fourier transformation (GIFT) method. The GIFT method has been applied to lamellar liquid crystal systems and it gives quantitative data on bilayer thickness, electron density profile, and membrane flexibility (Caillé parameter). When the GIFT method is applied to the SAXS data of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) alone (Chol [-]) or a DPPC/Chol = 7/3 mixed system (Chol [+], molar ratio), change in the bilayer thickness was insignificant in both systems. However, the electron density for the Chol (+) system was higher than that for the Chol (-) system at the location of hydrophilic groups of phospholipids, and whereas Caillé parameter value increased with temperature for the Chol (-) system, no significant change with temperature was observed in the Caillé parameter for the Chol (+) system. These results indicated that Chol is located in the vicinity of the hydrophilic group of the phospholipids and constricts the packing of the acyl chain of phospholipids in the bilayer.

Hairy roots of Ajuga reptans var. atropurpurea produce clerosterol, 22-dehydroclerosterol, and cholesterol as sterol constituents, and 20-hydroxyecdysone, cyasterone, isocyasterone, and 29-norcyasterone as ecdysteroid constituents. To better understand the biosynthesis of these steroidal compounds, we carried out feeding studies of variously 2H- and 13C-labeled sterol substrates with Ajuga hairy roots. In this article, we review our studies in this field. Feeding of labeled desmosterols, 24-methylenecholesterol, and 13C2-acetate established the mechanism of the biosynthesis of the two C29-sterols and a newly accumulated codisterol, including the metabolic correlation of C-26 and C-27 methyl groups. In Ajuga hairy roots, 3alpha-, 4alpha-, and 4beta-hydrogens of cholesterol were all retained at their original positions after conversion into 20-hydroxyecdysone, in contrast to the observations in a fern and an insect. Furthermore, the origin of 5beta-H of 20-hydroxyecdysone was found to be C-6 hydrogen of cholesterol exclusively, which is inconsistent with the results in the fern and the insect. These data strongly support the intermediacy of 7-dehydrocholesterol 5alpha,6alpha-epoxide. Moreover, 7-dehydrocholesterol, 3beta-hydroxy-5beta-cholest-7-en-6-one (5beta-ketol), and 3beta,14alpha-dihydroxy-5beta-cholest-7-en-6-one (5beta-ketodiol) were converted into 20-hydroxyecdysone. Thus, the pathway cholesterol-->7-dehydrocholesterol-->7-dehydrocholesterol 5alpha,6alpha-epoxide-->5beta-ketol-->5beta-k etodiol is proposed for the early stages of 20-hydroxyecdysone biosynthesis. 3beta-Hydroxy-5beta-cholestan-6-one was also incorporated into 20-hydroxyecdysone, suggesting that the introduction of a 7-ene function is not necessarily next to cholesterol. C-25 Hydroxylation during 20-hydroxyecdysone biosynthesis was found to proceed with ca. 70% retention and 30% inversion. Finally, clerosterol was shown to be a precursor of cyasterone and isocyasterone.
