Background/Aims The Gout Impact Scale (GIS), a part of the Gout Assessment Questionnaire 2.0, is used to measure gout-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Although several studies have been conducted on the factors affecting the HRQOL of patients with gout, few have focused on lifestyle factors. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between lifestyle habits and HRQOL using the GIS in patients with gout. Methods We used data from the Urate-Lowering TheRApy in Gout (ULTRA) registry, a prospective cohort of Korean patients with gout treated at multiple centers nationwide. The patients were aged ≥18 years and met the 2015 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism gout classification criteria. They were asked to complete a GIS and questions regarding their lifestyle habits at enrollment. Results The study included 232 patients. ‘Gout concern overall’ scores in the GIS were significantly lower in patients who exercised more frequently and consumed soft drinks and meat less, and ‘well-being during attack’ scores were significantly lower in patients who consumed vegetables and exercised more frequently. The frequency of vegetable consumption had a negative linear relationship with the ‘well-being during attack’ and ‘gout concern during attack’ scores (p = 0.01, p = 0.001, respectively). The frequency of exercise had a negative linear relationship with the ‘gout concern overall’ and ‘gout concern during attack’ scores (p = 0.04 and p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusions Patients with gout who frequently consumed vegetables and exercised regularly experienced less impact of gout, exhibiting a better GIS that represented HRQOL.

Abstract Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) may decrease patient quality of life and often leads to acute urinary retention and surgical intervention. While effective treatments are available, many BPH patients do not respond or develop resistance to treatment. To understand molecular determinants of clinical symptom persistence after initiating BPH treatment, we investigated gene expression profiles before and after treatments in the prostate transitional zone of 108 participants in the Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms (MTOPS) Trial. Unsupervised clustering revealed molecular subgroups characterized by expression changes in a large set of genes associated with resistance to finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor. Pathway analyses within this gene cluster found finasteride administration induced changes in fatty acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, immune response, steroid hormone metabolism, and kinase activity within the transitional zone. We found that patients without this transcriptional response were highly likely to develop clinical progression, which is expected in 13.2% of finasteride-treated patients. Importantly, a patient’s transcriptional response to finasteride was associated with their pre-treatment kinase expression. Further, we identified novel expression signatures of finasteride resistance among the transcriptionally responded patients. These patients showed different gene expression profiles at baseline and increased prostate transitional zone volume compared to the patients who responded to the treatment. Our work suggests molecular mechanisms of clinical resistance to finasteride treatment that could be potentially helpful for personalized BPH treatment as well as new drug development to increase patient drug response.

Erwinia amylovora is a gram-negative plant pathogen that causes fire blight in apple and pear trees, resulting in significant damage worldwide. In this study, we monitored the emergence of fire blight from 2019 to 2023 to determine the emergence patterns and the factors affecting the outbreak of the disease. As a result of the 5-year survey on the emergence of fire blight, a total of 2,029 cases have emerged, mostly in apple trees of 1,378 cases (67.9%) followed by 645 cases (31.8%) in pear trees, and from quince, hawthorn, and mountain ash trees. Fire blight appeared in specific areas of Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Gangwon, and Chungbuk provinces in 2019, but spread to Andong and Yesan in 2021, Muju and Bonghwa in 2023. In 2020 and 2021, there were 744 and 618 cases of fire blight outbreaks, respectively, compared to other years (188–245 cases/year). Notably, 914 of these cases were observed in apple trees from May to July, with 667 cases reported in Chungju and Jecheon. The incidence of fire blight was positively correlated with the daily maximum temperatures and rainy days in January and February, as well as the rainy days in May and June. The average age of the diseased pear trees was 25 years, higher than the 10-year average age of the apple trees. This study provides fundamental information to understand the status and factors affecting the fire blight emergence in Korea. Prevention measures should be established through continuous analysis of the status of fire blight.

Since 2009, the Korean Society of Plant Pathology has established the Committee on Common Names of Plant Disease to systematically review and determine plant disease names and related terminologies. The committee published the 6th edition of the List of Plant Diseases in Korea (LPDK) in 2022, and the list has been made publicly accessible online. The online database has significantly enhanced user accessibility, expedited update processes, and improved interoperability with other databases. As a result, the 6.1 edition of the list was released by online LPDK in 2023, detailing new disease names added over the preceding year and revisions to existing names. Subsequently, in 2024, the 6.2 edition was published, encompassing 6,765 diseases caused by 2,503 pathogen taxa across 1,432 host species. The public release of the online database has, however, introduced several challenges and tasks. Addressing these issues necessitates the development of modern, standardized nomenclature guidelines and a robust system for the registration of new disease names. Open communication and collaboration among the diverse members of the Korean Society of Plant Pathology are required to ensure the reliability of the LPDK.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a cardiomyopathy that is predominantly inherited and characterized by cardiac arrhythmias and structural abnormalities. TMEM43 (transmembrane protein 43) is one of the well-known genetic culprits behind ACM. In this study, we successfully generated an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line, YCMi010-A, derived from a male patient diagnosed with ACM. Although these iPSCs harbored a heterozygous intronic splice variant, TMEM43 c.443-2A > G, they still displayed normal cellular morphology and were confirmed to express pluripotency markers. YCMi010-A iPSC line is a promising model for investigating the pathomechanisms associated with ACM and exploring potential therapeutic strategies.

This study conducted sterilization testing under different conditions using different strains for sterilization and crushing, the intermediate healthcare waste treatment phase, and proposed strategies for diversifying corresponding facilities in addition to promoting their installation. Five indicator microorganisms were selected to test the sterilization efficiency of steam, microwave, and chemical methods. Steam sterilization testing was conducted in accordance with legal and technological standards, microwave testing was carried out according to the legal standard, and chemical sterilization employed three typical compounds. Steam and microwave sterilization achieved 99.9999 % inactivation rates for all five strains under both conditions used; whereas under the chemical sterilization analyses, sodium hypochlorite (1000 ppm) failed to meet the inactivation requirement of the fungal strain Candida albicans, requiring further investigation. Based on these findings, this study presents strategies for diversifying sterilization·crushing facilities and promoting their installation.

Background: Asthma has been suggested to be a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), although the evidence supporting this relationship is inconclusive. This study aimed to explore the long-term associations between asthma and asthma exacerbations with the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as ischemic heart disease (IHD), heart failure (HF), and cerebral stroke, utilizing data from a nationwide cohort. Materials and methods: This study utilized data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort database (2002–2015), including information on 111,316 asthma patients and an equal number of 1:1 matched control participants. A propensity score overlap-weighted Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the overlap-weighted hazard ratios (HRs) of asthma and exacerbated asthma for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) within this cohort. Results: During the follow-up period, the incidence rate (IR) of IHD per 1000 person-years (PYs) was 7.82 in patients with asthma and 5.79 in controls. The IR of HF was 2.53 in asthmatic patients and 1.36 in controls. After adjustment for covariates, asthmatic patients exhibited 1.27-fold and 1.56-fold higher HRs for IHD (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.23–1.37, P

Glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and diacetyl are toxic α-dicarbonyl compounds found in heat-processed foods, including edible oils. Dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction was combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry to determine the glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and diacetyl contents in sesame oil. Chloroform and methanol were selected as the optimal extraction and dispersive solvents, respectively. The maximum derivatization efficiency was obtained using 500 µg of the derivatization agent, o-phenylenediamine. The derivatization of glyoxal was completed in 1 h, whereas those of methylglyoxal and diacetyl were completed immediately. The optimized method was validated, and was found to exhibit a good linearity, recovery, intraday repeatability, and interday reproducibility. The α-dicarbonyl compound concentrations in the oils were dependent on the roasting temperature. The sesame oil concentrates contained 0–175.4, 0–990.5, and 0–220.9 ng g−1 of glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and diacetyl, respectively. For the perilla oils, the respective concentrations were 0–96.4, 0–410.8, and 0–197.5 ng g−1.

Malvidin and its glycosides have been studied for their anti-carcinogenic potential in various forms of cancer, however the in-depth review for malvidin and its glycosides in in vitro and in vivo studies, is yet to be reported. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the anti-carcinogenic potential of malvidin and its glycosides in various cancer types such as leukemia, colon/colorectal, gastric, hepatocarcinoma, lung, oral and breast cancer. Malvidin and its glycosides were found to induce apoptosis, autophagy, cell cycle arrest, suppression of cell proliferation, and prevent metastasis through modulation of various signaling pathways. This study recommends the incorporation of plant-based phytochemicals like malvidin in a prolonged dietary pattern, and its use over the drug based chemical compounds that might prove beneficial against cancer related pathology. Moreover, further in depth in vitro, in vivo, and human studies must be conducted to reveal the actual potential of malvidin against cancer.

Abstract Legumes are primarily grown agriculturally for human consumption, livestock forage, silage, and as green manure. However, production has declined primarily due to fungal pathogens. Among them, this study focused on Fusarium spp. that cause Fusarium wilt in minor legumes in Korea. Diseased legume plants were collected from 2020 to 2021, and diverse fungal genera were isolated from the internal tissues of the plant roots and stems. Fusarium spp. were the most dominant, accounting for 71% of the isolates. They were identified via morphological characteristics and molecular identification. In the pathogenicity test, Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium fujikuroi generally exhibited high virulence. The host range investigation revealed that the NC20-738, NC20-739, and NC21-950 isolates infected all nine crops, demonstrating the widest host range. In previous studies, the focus was solely on Fusarium wilt disease in soybeans. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate Fusarium wilt occurred in minor legumes, which are consumed as extensively as soybeans, due to the scarcity of data on the diversity and characteristics of Fusarium spp. existing in Korea. The diverse information obtained in this study will serve as a foundation for implementing effective management strategies against Fusarium-induced plant diseases.

In 2020 and 2021, we surveyed diseases of three-leaf ladybell (Adenophora triphylla) plants grown in fields at two locations in Korea. During the disease surveys, severe leaf rot symptoms were observed on the young plants in Hongseong, and stem rot symptoms on the adult plants in Cheolwon. The incidence of leaf rot was 5‒60%, and that of stem rot 1‒10%. We obtained 6 fungal isolates each from the leaf rot lesions and the stem rot lesions. All the isolates were morphologically identified as Rhizoctonia solani. Anastomosis test and investigation of cultural features of the fungal isolates revealed that the isolates from the leaf rot lesions corresponded to R. solani AG-1(IB), and those from the stem rot lesions to R. solani AG-2-2(IIIB). Two isolates each of R. solani AG-1(IB) and AG-2-2(IIIB) were used for DNA sequence analysis and pathogenicity test to three-leaf ladybell plants through artificial inoculation. The anastomosis groups and cultural types of the R. solani isolates were confirmed by the sequence analysis. The pathogenicity tests revealed that the isolates of R. solani AG-1(IB) caused only leaf rot symptoms on the inoculated plants, and those of R. solani AG-2-2(IIIB) leaf rot and stem rot symptoms. The induced symptoms were similar to those observed in the fields investigated. Leaf and stem rot of three-leaf ladybell caused by the two anastomosis groups and cultural types of R. solani is first reported in this study.

More than a year has passed after the 6th edition of ‘List of Plant Diseases in Korea (LPDK)’ was published in April 2022. The 6.1st edition (2023) of List of Plant Diseases in Korea was made by correcting errors found in the 6th edition of list and adding new diseases reported after the 6th edition. There were 397 corrections from the 6th edition, most of which were simple spelling errors or minor issues. However, 12 diseases were deleted due to duplication or unclear literature proof, and 2 diseases had their diseases’ common names changed. We added 158 diseases that were reported before 2021 but not included in the 6th edition, or reported after the 6th edition. After all, 146 diseases were added to the 6,534 diseases in the 6th edition, resulting in a total of 6,680 diseases in the 6.1st edition. Thirty host taxa were also added, increasing the number from 1,390 in the 6th edition to 1,420 in the 6.1st edition. Pathogens were also added to 62 taxa, from 2,400 in the 6th edition, bringing the total to 2,462 taxa in the 6.1st edition. Ultimately, the 6.1st edition (2023) of ‘The List of Plant Diseases in Korea’ contains 6,680 diseases caused by pathogens of 2,462 taxa on 1,420 hosts. Abstract Background In 2011, Korean Neuropsychiatric Association renamed schizophrenia from ‘mind split disorder’ (‘Jungshinbunyeolbyung’ in Korean) to ‘attunement disorder’ (‘Johyeonbyung’ in Korean), in a strategic way to reduce social stigma toward people with schizophrenia. However, there remains an elusive consensus that how the renaming effort has contributed to changes in the social perception of schizophrenia in Korea. Methods With this regard, we explored whether media frames alter the social perception, in ways of respecting or disrespecting schizophrenia patients before and after the renaming. This study extensively investigated media keywords related to schizophrenia across the time by applying both language and epidemiologic analyses. Results In results, the media keywords have been negatively described for schizophrenia patients both before and after the renaming. Further, from an analysis using the regression model, a significant correlation was observed between the frequency of negative keywords and the hospitalization frequency of schizophrenia patients. Conclusions These findings suggest that the social perception of schizophrenia has been scarcely changed, but rather remained negatively biased against schizophrenia patients, in spite of the renaming effort. Notably, the biased media frames have been demonstrated to negatively impact on the social perception, and even on the medical use patterns of general schizophrenia patients. In conclusion, we suggest that the unbiased media frames along with the renaming effort may collectively help reduce the negative social perception of schizophrenia. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of licochalcone D (LicoD), which is derived from Glycyrrhiza uralensis, for improving glucose metabolism in AML12 hepatocytes with high-glucose-induced insulin resistance (IR). Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry revealed that the LicoD content of G. uralensis was 8.61 µg/100 mg in the ethanol extract (GUE) and 0.85 µg/100 mg in the hot water extract. GUE and LicoD enhanced glucose consumption and uptake, as well as Glut2 mRNA expression, in high-glucose-induced IR AML12 cells. These effects were associated with the activation of the insulin receptor substrate/phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase signaling pathway, increased protein kinase B α phosphorylation, and suppression of gluconeogenesis-related genes, such as Pepck and G6pase. Furthermore, GUE and LicoD promoted glycogen synthesis by downregulating glycogen phosphorylase. Furthermore, LicoD and GUE mitigated the downregulated expression of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation proteins in IR hepatocytes by activating the PPARα/PGC1α pathway and increasing the mitochondrial DNA content. These findings demonstrate the potential of LicoD and GUE as therapeutic options for alleviating IR-induced metabolic disorders by improving glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function.

Despite growing interest in the preventive effects of statins, as lipid-lowering agents, on migraine attacks, comprehensive nationwide studies comparing migraine likelihood between statin users and controls are lacking. Our nested case–control study within the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort (2002–2019) investigated this association using 38,957 migraine patients and 155,828 controls, considering migraine subtypes (with/without aura) and statin types (lipophilic vs. hydrophilic). Using propensity score matching and adjusting for confounders, statin use was linked to reduced migraine likelihood overall (odds ratio (OR) 0.93), particularly for migraines with aura (OR 0.75) and without aura (OR 0.94). Lipophilic statins were effective for both subtypes, while hydrophilic statins mainly reduced the likelihood of migraines without aura. Subgroup analyses showed consistent benefits across demographics, but varied effectiveness based on weight, smoking, alcohol use, hemoglobin levels, and dyslipidemia history. In summary, this nationwide cohort study suggests that statin use may reduce migraine likelihood among Korean adults across diverse demographics and clinical profiles, but varied effectiveness based on certain lifestyle and comorbidity factors underscores the importance of considering individual patient profiles when assessing the potential benefits of statin therapy for migraine prevention.

Noise-vocoded speech has long been used to investigate how acoustic cues affect speech understanding. Studies indicate that reducing the number of spectral channel bands diminishes speech intelligibility. Despite previous studies examining the channel band effect using earlier event-related potential (ERP) components, such as P1, N1, and P2, a clear consensus or understanding remains elusive. Given our hypothesis that spectral degradation affects higher-order processing of speech understanding beyond mere perception, we aimed to objectively measure differences in higher-order abilities to discriminate or interpret meaning. Using an oddball paradigm with speech stimuli, we examined how neural signals correlate with the evaluation of speech stimuli based on the number of channel bands measuring N2 and P3b components. In 20 young participants with normal hearing, we measured speech intelligibility and N2 and P3b responses using a one-syllable task paradigm with animal and non-animal stimuli across four vocoder conditions with 4, 8, 16, or 32 channel bands. Flexible bioelectronic devices have attracted immense interest in the biomedical field because of their wearability, biocompatibility, diverse functionalities, and ease of personalization. Recently, flexible energy harvesters have been developed, and attempts have been made to integrate them with such devices, enabling them to operate without external batteries or power supply. In this review, the latest advances in flexible energy harvesters and their use in wearable devices are discussed. Energy harvesters for versatile biomedical applications are summarized. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of self‐powered biomedical systems that enable wearable healthcare monitoring and management are outlined.

Background The ECG is a simple, noninvasive screening method for cardiovascular disease and arrhythmia. The impact of ECG abnormality on mortality is not certain in low‐risk populations. To address this, we evaluated the association between ECG abnormality and mortality. Methods and Results We retrospectively assessed baseline ECG and all‐cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in 660 383 patients presenting for medical check‐ups. Baseline ECG abnormalities were classified according to the Minnesota Code. Among the total 660 383 participants, 23 609 (3.6%) had major and 110 038 (16.7%) had minor ECG abnormalities. All‐cause mortality occurred in 7751 patients (1.1%) and cardiovascular mortality in 1180 (0.18%) over a median follow‐up period of 8.8 years. Major ECG abnormalities were associated with all‐cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.11 [95%, 1.03–1.2]) and cardiovascular mortality (HR, 1.92 [95% CI, 1.63–2.27]) compared with no ECG abnormalities. All‐cause mortality was associated with right atrial enlargement (HR, 2.11 [95% CI, 1.1–4.07]), left atrial enlargement (HR, 1.76 [95% CI, 1.1–2.84]), sinus tachycardia (HR, 1.52 [95% CI, 1.15–2.01]), complete atrioventricular block (HR, 2.1 [95% CI, 1.05–4.2]), atrial fibrillation (HR, 1.52 [95% CI, 1.26–1.84]), and left ventricular hypertrophy (HR, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.02–1.3]). Cardiovascular mortality was associated with left atrial enlargement (HR, 4.52 [95% CI, 2.15–9.5]), atrial fibrillation (HR, 3.22 [95% CI, 2.33–4.46]), left ventricular hypertrophy (HR, 1.72 [95% CI, 1.35–2.19]), major Q‐wave abnormality (HR, 1.6 [95% CI, 1.08–2.39]), and major ST‐T abnormality (HR, 1.76 [95% CI, 1.01–3.04]). Conclusions ECG abnormalities, including left atrial enlargement, left ventricular hypertrophy, atrial fibrillation, and major Q‐wave and ST‐T abnormalities, were associated with cardiovascular mortality in a low‐risk population.

Gout is the most common form of arthritis, with the prevalence increasing worldwide. The present treatment guidelines provide recommendations for the appropriate treatment of acute gout, management during the inter-critical period, and prevention of chronic complications. The guidelines were developed based on evidence-based medicine and draft recommendations finalized after expert consensus. These guidelines are designed to provide clinicians with clinical evidence to enable efficient treatment of gout.

Gastric cancer (GC) survivors may be more likely to develop osteoporosis. However, few studies on the relationship between GC and osteoporosis have been conducted on large patient populations. We aimed to determine the incidence of osteoporosis and identify related factors by comparing patients with GC and matched controls using the Korean National Health Insurance Service—National Sample Cohort (KNHIS-NSC). This study included 9078 patients with GC and 36,312 controls (1:4 propensity score-matched for sex, age, residence, and income). The hazard ratio (HR) for osteoporosis was significantly greater for GC patients than for controls according to Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score-adjusted models (adjusted HR = 1.13). Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that the cumulative incidence of osteoporosis during the follow-up period commencing from the index date was significantly greater in GC patients than in the controls (p = 0.0087). A positive correlation of osteoporosis with GC was detected for those aged < 65 years, males, and those with CCI scores = 0. In conclusion, the study findings suggest that men with GC aged < 65 years may be at an increased risk for osteoporosis. Research into additional risk factors and the optimal timing of interventions are needed to prevent fractures and minimize bone loss in GC survivors.

Tonsillectomy has been suggested as a potential intervention to resolve psoriasis; however, its preventive effects on the development of psoriasis remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the risk of developing late-onset psoriasis among a Korean adult population who had undergone tonsillectomy. Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort between 2002 and 2019 were utilized. Out of a total of 514,866 participants, 1082 participants aged 40 years or older who had undergone tonsillectomy were matched with 4328 control participants using overlap weighting adjustment based on the propensity score. The incidence and hazard ratio (HR) of psoriasis were calculated for both tonsillectomy and control groups. The incidence rates of psoriasis were 1.30% in the tonsillectomy group and 1.20% in the control group. The incidence of psoriasis (overlap-weighted HR = 1.08, 95% confidence of interval = 0.69–1.69, and p = 0.732) did not differ significantly between the patients who underwent tonsillectomy and those in the control group. The cumulative probability of developing psoriasis was not different between the two groups (Log-rank test: p = 0.440). These findings were consistent across subgroups divided by age, sex, income, and region of residence. We found that tonsillectomy did not confer a preventive effect on the development of late-onset psoriasis in the Korean adult population.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory skin disorder that affects approximately 2–3% of the global population due to significant genetic predisposition. It is characterized by an uncontrolled growth and differentiation of keratinocytes, leading to the formation of scaly erythematous plaques. Psoriasis extends beyond dermatological manifestations to impact joints and nails and is often associated with systemic disorders. Although traditional treatments provide relief, their use is limited by potential side effects and the chronic nature of the disease. This review aims to discuss the therapeutic potential of keratinocyte-targeting natural products in psoriasis and highlight their efficacy and safety in comparison with conventional treatments. This review comprehensively examines psoriasis pathogenesis within keratinocytes and the various related signaling pathways (such as JAK-STAT and NF-κB) and cytokines. It presents molecular targets such as high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), dual-specificity phosphatase-1 (DUSP1), and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) for treating psoriasis. It evaluates the ability of natural compounds such as luteolin, piperine, and glycyrrhizin to modulate psoriasis-related pathways. Finally, it offers insights into alternative and sustainable treatment options with fewer side effects.

Objective: Previous studies have reported controversial results on the association between gout and the risk of cancer. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between gout and the incidence of head and neck cancer (HNC). Methods: The data of participants who underwent health checkups in 2009 were analyzed using the National Health Insurance Database in South Korea. A total of 14,348 HNC patients and 57,392 control participants were analyzed for a prior history of gout. Overlap weighting was applied, and odds ratios (ORs) of gout for HNC patients were analyzed. The overlap-weighted model adjusted for demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors and comorbidities. HNC sites were classified as oral cavity cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, nasal cavity/sinus cancer, larynx cancer, or salivary gland cancer, and the ORs of gout were estimated for each site. Results: Overall, patients with HNC had 1.12-fold greater odds of having gout (95% confidence intervals [CIs] = 1.04–1.20). According to the site of HNC, oral cavity cancer, oropharynx cancer, and larynx cancer demonstrated high odds of having gout (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.16–1.34 for oral cavity cancer; OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.01–1.15 for oropharynx cancer; and OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.06–1.20 for larynx cancer). On the other hand, nasal cavity/sinus cancer, nasopharynx cancer, and salivary gland cancer presented low odds of having gout (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.72–0.84 for nasal cavity/sinus cancer; OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.83–0.96 for nasopharynx cancer; and OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.81–0.96 for salivary gland cancer). Conclusions: A prior history of gout was associated with a high overall incidence of HNC. Oral cavity cancer, oropharynx cancer, and larynx cancer have a high incidence in gout patients. However, nasal cavity/sinus cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and salivary gland cancer have low incidences in gout patients. The impact of gout on HNC risk should be specifically considered according to the site of the HNC.

Abstract Background Whether migraine is related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a longitudinal follow-up study to address the association between migraine and the development of CVDs in Korea. Methods Using data from the national health screening cohort, we included 45,246 patients diagnosed with migraine between 2002 and 2019 and age-, sex-, income-, and residential region-matched nonmigraine participants at a ratio of 1:4. Participants with previous CVDs were excluded. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios of three CVDs, stroke, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure, in patients with migraine after adjusting for potential cardiovascular risk factors. Results The incidence rate differences of stroke, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure among patients with migraine were 2.61, 1.69, and 0.11, respectively. The probability of developing stroke and ischemic heart disease in patients with migraine was significantly higher than that in controls after controlling for multiple confounders (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.31–1.39 and adjusted HR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.26–1.35, respectively). However, when compared with the patients without migraine, patients with migraine did not have an increased HR of developing heart failure (adjusted HR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.95–1.08). The overall migraine group, as well as groups stratified by migraine subtypes with and without aura, each showed a significantly higher probability of subsequent stroke and ischemic heart disease than the control group. Conclusions Our longitudinal follow-up study demonstrated a significant association between the presence of migraine and the development of stroke and ischemic heart disease in Korea, even after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract Despite growing epidemiological evidence, the relationship between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and cancer has not been conclusively demonstrated, and related studies are scarce in the Asian population. We aimed to determine the association between PD and subsequent development of various cancers from longitudinal data of a representative sample of Korean adults aged ≥40 years. We retrospectively identified 8381 patients diagnosed with PD from 2002 to 2019 using claims data among 514,866 people of random samples from the Korean National Health Insurance database. We sampled 33,524 age-, sex-, income-, and residential area-matched participants without PD from the same database. The longitudinal associations between PD and overall cancer, as well as 10 common types of cancer, were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional-hazards regression analysis. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of all cancer types was 0.63 (95% confidence interval = 0.57–0.69) in patients with PD compared with matched controls. The aHRs of gastric, thyroid, colorectal, lung, hepatic, and pancreatic cancer and hematological malignancy were 0.69 (0.56–0.85), 0.60 (0.39–0.93), 0.56 (0.44–0.70), 0.71 (0.58–0.84), 0.64 (0.48–0.86), 0.37 (0.23–0.60), and 0.56 (0.36–0.87), respectively. The associations of bladder, gallbladder and biliary duct, and kidney cancer with PD were not statistically significant. Our findings show inverse associations between overall cancer and most cancer types in patients with PD. These inverse associations and their pathogeneses merit further investigation.

Abstract Background During the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the amount of moderate- to high-intensity physical activity significantly decreased. Therefore, the epidemiology of musculoskeletal diseases could possibly have changed. We assessed changes in the incidence of and variance in non-traumatic orthopedic diseases before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. Methods This study included data from the Korea National Health Insurance Service, which covers the entire Korean population (approximately 50 million), from January 2018 to June 2021. Using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes, 12 common orthopedic diseases were evaluated, including cervical disc disorders, lumbar disc disorders, forward head posture, myofascial pain syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, hip fracture, distal radius fracture, and spine fracture diseases. “Pre-COVID-19” was the period until February 2020, and “COVID-19 pandemic period” was the period starting March 2020. Differences in the mean incidence and variance of diseases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were compared. Results In most cases, the incidence of orthopedic diseases decreased at the beginning of the pandemic and then increased thereafter. Pulmonary interstitial glycogenosis (PIG) is known to be associated with a wide variety of congenital conditions, though the extent to which PIG contributes to clinical presentation and outcomes in infants remains controversial. We describe two cases of infants with congenital anomalies and respiratory distress at birth who were diagnosed with PIG with differing clinical courses and response to methylprednisolone therapy. These cases highlight the importance of improved recognition of PIG and uncertainties about which patients may benefit from treatment.

Unlike general nutritional ranges that meet the nutritional needs essential for maintaining the life of an entire population, personalized nutrition is characterised by maintaining health through providing customized nutrition according to individuals’ lifestyles or genetic characteristics. The development of technology and services for personalized nutrition is increasing, owing to the acquisition of knowledge about the differences in nutritional requirements according to the diversity of individuals and an increase in health interest. Regarding genetics, technology is being developed to distinguish the various characteristics of individuals and provide customized nutrition. Therefore, to understand the current state of personalized nutrition technology, understanding genomics is necessary to acquire information on nutrition research based on genomics. We reviewed patents related to personalized nutrition-targeting genomics and examined their mechanisms of action. Using the patent database, we searched 694 patents on nutritional genomics and extracted 561 highly relevant valid data points. Furthermore, an in-depth review was conducted by selecting core patents related to genome-based personalized nutrition technology. A marked increase was observed in personalized nutrition technologies using methods such as genetic scoring and disease-specific dietary recommendations.

Abstract To date, no clear conclusion on the relationships of gout with the occurrence of typical neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), has been reached. This study aimed to determine whether the patients with gout are at a lower or higher probability of developing AD or PD than those without gout. Longitudinal follow-up data of a representative sample of Korean adults were assessed. 18,079 individuals diagnosed with gout between 2003 and 2015 were enrolled in the gout group. The comparison group comprised 72,316 demographics-matched individuals not diagnosed with gout. Longitudinal associations of gout with AD or PD were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression adjusting for potential confounders. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of AD and PD in the gout group were 1.01 and 1.16 times higher than controls, but these differences were not statistically significant (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.92–1.12 and 95% CI = 0.97–1.38, respectively). The aim of this study was to develop evidence-based recommendations for determining the surgical extent in patients with locally invasive differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Locally invasive DTC with gross extrathyroidal extension invading surrounding anatomical structures may lead to several functional deficits and poor oncological outcomes. At present, the optimal extent of surgery in locally invasive DTC remains a matter of debate, and there are no adequate guidelines. On October 8, 2021, four experts searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases; the identified papers were reviewed by 39 experts in thyroid and head and neck surgery. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the quality of evidence, and to develop and report recommendations. The strength of a recommendation reflects the confidence of a guideline panel that the desirable effects of an intervention outweigh any undesirable effects, across all patients for whom the recommendation is applicable. After completing the draft guidelines, Delphi questionnaires were completed by members of the Korean Society of Head and Neck Surgery. Twenty-seven evidence-based recommendations were made for several factors, including the preoperative workup; surgical extent of thyroidectomy; surgery for cancer invading the strap muscles, recurrent laryngeal nerve, laryngeal framework, trachea, or esophagus; and surgery for patients with central and lateral cervical lymph node involvement. Evidence-based guidelines were devised to help clinicians make safer and more efficient clinical decisions for the optimal surgical treatment of patients with locally invasive DTC.

Growing research has proposed that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and chronic periodontitis (CP) share similar pathophysiological mechanisms involving inflammation and tissue destruction. However, the potential correlation of CP as a contributing factor for the occurrence of RA warrants validation in the Korean population, where both diseases are prevalent, especially considering the increasingly aging demographic in Korea. This study examined 5139 RA cases and 509,727 matched controls from a Korean national cohort dataset (2002–2019) by carefully employing propensity score matching to ensure comparability between groups. Baseline characteristics were compared using standardized differences, and logistic regression was employed to estimate the impact of CP history on RA likelihood while controlling for covariates. We fully examined medical records documenting CP occurrences within the two-year period leading up to the index date, conducting comprehensive subgroup analyses. While a 1-year history of CP did not show a significant association with likelihood of RA, a 2-year history of CP increased RA likelihood by 12%, particularly among older adults, females, rural residents, and those with certain comorbidities such as hypercholesterolemia. Interestingly, this association persisted even among individuals with non-smoking habits, normal weight, and infrequent alcohol consumption. These findings suggest that chronic CP exposure for at least 2 years may independently elevate RA risk in Korean adults. The association in certain subgroups appears to suggest a predisposition toward genetic susceptibilities over lifestyle and environmental factors. Predicting RA in CP patients may be challenging, emphasizing the importance of regular RA screening, especially in high-risk subgroups.

Recent research suggests a potential relevance between chronic periodontitis (CP) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), raising concerns about comorbid PD among elderly CP patients. However, the epidemiologic basis for this association remains unclear. Employing a nested case-control design, this study explored the association between CP and subsequent PD occurrences in Korean adults, leveraging a validated national population-based dataset covering the period from 2002 to 2019. It included 8794 PD patients and 35,176 matched control individuals, established through propensity score matching for age, sex, residential area, and income. Baseline characteristics were compared using standardized differences, and logistic regression was employed to assess the impact of CP histories on PD likelihood while controlling for covariates. We performed a thorough examination of CP events within both 1-year and 2-year intervals preceding the index date, incorporating subgroup analyses. Our analysis revealed no statistically significant association between CP history and PD development overall. However, subgroup analysis revealed a slightly increased likelihood of PD development among CP individuals with a high disease burden (Charlson Comorbidity Index score ≥ 2). In conclusion, although our study did not find a significant overall association between CP history and PD development, the elevated likelihood of PD in subgroups with high disease burden may suggest that comorbidities influence PD probability among certain CP patients. Considering comorbid conditions in PD screening for some individuals with CP may be also important.

Background/Introduction: Odontogenic infection is one of the main etiologies of deep neck infection (DNI). However, the relationship between chronic periodontitis (CP) and the incidence of DNI has not been examined. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of DNI and peritonsillar abscess (PTA) after CP. Methods: The Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort 2002–2019 was used. In Study I, 4585 PTA patients were matched with 19,340 control I participants. A previous history of CP for 1 year was collected, and the odds ratios (ORs) of CP for PTA were analyzed using conditional logistic regression. In Study II, 46,293 DNI patients and 185,172 control II participants were matched. A previous history of CP for 1 year was collected, and conditional logistic regression was conducted for the ORs of CP for DNI. Secondary analyses were conducted in demographic, socioeconomic, and comorbidity subgroups. Results: In Study I, a history of CP was not related to the incidence of PTA (adjusted OR = 1.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.91–1.81). In Study II, the incidence of DNI was greater in participants with a history of CP (adjusted OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.41–1.71). The relationship between CP history and DNI was greater in groups with young, male, low-income, and rural residents. Conclusions: A prior history of CP was associated with a high incidence of DNI in the general population of Korea. Patients with CP need to be managed for the potential risk of DNI.

Euonymus hamiltonianus Wall. is considered a medicinal plant and is used to treat pain, cough, dysuria, and cancer, but a clear phytochemical investigation of its biological activities has yet to be performed. Investigation of chemical constituents of the leaves of Euonymus hamiltonianus Wall. led to the isolation of three new compounds by chromatography techniques, euonymusins A–C (1, 10, and 11), and the acquisition of new spectroscopic data for euonymusin D (2), along with the identification of ten known compounds. The chemical structures of the compounds were established using extensive spectroscopic techniques, including NMR, MS, and hydrolysis, and compared with the published data. These compounds were tested in vitro for their inhibitory effects on beta amyloid production (Aβ42). Compounds 13 and 14 displayed weak inhibition, with IC50 values ranging from 53.15 to 65.43 µM. Moreover, these compounds were also assessed for their inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production. Of these compounds, 3, 4, and 14 displayed inhibitory effects on NO production, with IC50 values ranging from 14.38 to 17.44 µM. Compounds 3, 4, and 14 also suppressed LPS-induced expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein.

While headaches frequently occur in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), there are few statistical evaluations of their connection to migraines in population-based studies. In this nationwide longitudinal follow-up study of Korean health examination data (2002–2019), a total of 15,443 participants with CKD and 61,772 matched controls were enrolled. We applied overlap-weighted Cox proportional hazard regression models to assess hazard ratios, examining the correlation between CKD and the development of migraines. After accounting for various factors, we observed a modest reduction of approximately 11% in the likelihood of migraine occurrence among CKD patients (95% confidence intervals = 0.81–0.97) during the 16-year monitoring period. Subgroup analysis revealed a significant association among specific demographic and health conditions, including individuals aged 70 or older, females, overweight individuals, nonsmokers, and those without hypertension or diabetes. Our research may indicate a potential relationship between CKD and the onset of migraines in Korean adults, suggesting a slight reduction in the probability of the occurrence of migraines among those with CKD. These findings emphasize the need for attentive follow-up and preventive management in individuals without the identified protective factors, particularly in male CKD patients under the age of 70 with hypertension.

Excessive lipid accumulation in adipocytes is a primary contributor to the development of metabolic disorders, including obesity. The consumption of bioactive compounds derived from natural sources has been recognized as being safe and effective in preventing and alleviating obesity. Therefore, we aimed to explore the antilipidemic effects of pennogenin 3-O-β-chacotrioside (P3C), a steroid glycoside, on hypertrophied 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Oil Red O and Nile red staining demonstrated a P3C-induced reduction in lipid droplet accumulation. Additionally, the increased expression of adipogenic and lipogenic factors, including PPARγ and C/EBPα, during the differentiation process was significantly decreased by P3C treatment at both the protein and mRNA levels. Furthermore, P3C treatment upregulated the expression of fatty acid oxidation-related genes such as PGC1α and CPT1a. Moreover, mitochondrial respiration and ATP generation increased following P3C treatment, as determined using the Seahorse XF analyzer. P3C treatment also increased the protein expression of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in hypertrophied adipocytes. Our findings suggest that P3C could serve as a natural lipid-lowering agent, reducing lipogenesis and enhancing mitochondrial oxidative capacity. Therefore, P3C may be a promising candidate as a therapeutic agent for obesity-related diseases.

Given the global significance of gout and gastric cancer (GC) as major health problems with interrelated impacts, we examined the development of GC in Korean patients with gout. We conducted a nested case–control study using data from 10,174 GC patients and 40,696 control patients from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database. Propensity score matching (1:4) with propensity score overlap-weighted adjustment was used to reduce selection bias and estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between gout and GC. An adjusted OR for GC was not significantly higher in patients with gout than in control patients (1.02; 95% CI, 0.93–1.12; p = 0.652). Additionally, no association between gout and GC was observed in subgroup analyses such as sex, age, level of income, region of residence, or Charlson Comorbidity Index score. In conclusion, these results suggest that gout is not a significant independent risk factor for GC among the Korean population. Additional investigation is required to establish a causal association between gout and GC, and to generalize these results to general populations.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of global mortality. While recent reports suggest potential connections between CKD and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), further research is needed to elucidate the direct association between CKD and CRS. This study investigated the association between CKD and CRS using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Screening Cohort. Participants were recruited according to medical claim codes, and individuals with CKD were matched in a 1:4 ratio with the control group. Covariates, such as demographics, health-related data, and medical history were used. The incidence rates and hazard ratio of CRS were analyzed. A further analysis was performed based on the presence of nasal polyps. Among the 514,866 participants, 16,644 patients with CKD and 66,576 matched controls were included in the analysis. The CKD group demonstrated a higher incidence of CRS than the controls: 18.30 versus 13.10 per 10,000 person-years. The CKD group demonstrated a higher risk of CRS than the control group (1.28 adjusted hazard ratio). In additional analyses, the CKD group did not exhibit a statistically significant correlation for the development of CRS with nasal polyps. This study suggests that CKD is associated with an increased risk for CRS.

Concerns over the spread of non-native species in aquatic environments have led to the need for effective methods to prevent and control their spread while protecting native species. This study investigated the potential of yeast vacuolar enzymes as a natural hatching inhibitor for controlling aquatic organisms. Hatching experiments with Daphnia magna eggs demonstrated that exposure to yeast vacuole enzymes inhibited hatching in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting their potential as an effective inhibitor of egg hatching in aquatic organisms. Interestingly, the protease used for comparative purposes did not inhibit hatching, but instead increased the mortality of hatched D. magna. Additionally, chorionic changes were observed in non-hatched D. magna eggs and zebrafish eggs exposed to yeast vacuole enzymes, suggesting that the enzyme can alter the chorion and interfere with hatching. These findings suggest that yeast vacuolar enzymes may be a promising and natural management tool for controlling the spread of harmful aquatic organisms, and further research is warranted to explore their potential for species-specific control.

ObjectiveAccumulating evidence from other countries indicates potential associations between gout and cardiovascular diseases; however, the associations of gout with cardiovascular diseases, particularly stroke, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure, remain ambiguous in the Korean population. We hypothesized that individuals with gout are at a higher likelihood of stroke, ischemic heart disease, or heart failure. This study expands upon previous research by ensuring a comparable baseline between patient and control groups and analyzing 16 years of data derived from an extensive healthcare database.MethodsWe selected 22,480 patients with gout and 22,480 control individuals from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort database (2002–2019), and matched them at a 1:1 ratio according to sex, age, income, and residence. A Cox proportional hazard model with weighted overlap was employed to examine the relationship between gout and the risk of stroke, ischemic heart disease, or heart failure after adjustment for several covariates.ResultsThe incidences of stroke, ischemic heart disease, or heart failure in participants with gout were slightly higher than those in controls (stroke: 9.84 vs. 8.41 per 1000 person-years; ischemic heart disease: 9.77 vs. 7.15 per 1000 person-years; heart failure: 2.47 vs. 1.46 per 1000 person-years). After adjustment, the gout group had an 11% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.04–1.19), 28% (95% CI = 1.19–1.37), or 64% (95% CI = 1.41–1.91) higher likelihood of experiencing stroke, ischemic heart disease, or heart failure, respectively, than the control group.ConclusionThe present findings suggest that individuals with gout in the Korean population, particularly those aged ≥ 60 years, were more likely to have stroke, ischemic heart disease, or heart failure.

The goal of the “2019 Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures Challenge” (ASVspoof) was to make it easier to create systems that could identify voice spoofing attacks with high levels of accuracy. However, model complexity and latency requirements were not emphasized in the competition, despite the fact that they are stringent requirements for implementation in the real world. The majority of the top-performing solutions from the competition used an ensemble technique that merged numerous sophisticated deep learning models to maximize detection accuracy. Those approaches struggle with real-world deployment restrictions for voice assistants which would have restricted resources. We merged skip connection (from ResNet) and max feature map (from Light CNN) to create a compact system, and we tested its performance using the ASVspoof 2019 dataset. Our single model achieved a replay attack detection equal error rate (EER) of 0.30% on the evaluation set using an optimized constant Q transform (CQT) feature, outperforming the top ensemble system in the competition, which scored an EER of 0.39%. We experimented using depthwise separable convolutions (from MobileNet) to reduce model sizes; this resulted in an 84.3 percent reduction in parameter count (from 286K to 45K), while maintaining similar performance (EER of 0.36%). Additionally, we used Grad-CAM to clarify which spectrogram regions significantly contribute to the detection of fake data.

In July 2020, wilting symptoms were observed among adzuki bean plants (Vigna angularis var. angularis L.) in the fields in Yeosu, Korea. Infected plants showed yellowing of leaves, browning inside the stems, splitting of stem bark, and wilting. When these plants were uprooted, their roots were found to be brown. The fungal pathogens NC20-737, NC20-738, and NC20-739 were isolated from symptomatic stem and root tissues. These pathogens were identified as a Fusarium fujikuroi species complex based on their morphological characteristics. Molecular identification was performed using the DNA sequence of translation elongation factor 1 alpha and the RNA polymerase Ⅱ second largest subunit regions. The nucleotide sequences of all three isolates were similar to the F. fujikuroi reference isolates NRRL 13566 and NRRL 5538 of the National Centre for Biotechnology Information GenBank. A pathogenicity test was conducted by the soil inoculation method with cornmeal sand inoculum. Approximately 3 weeks after inoculation, symptoms were observed only in the inoculated adzuki bean seedlings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Fusarium root rot caused by F. fujikuroi in adzuki beans, both in Korea and worldwide.

Fusarium head blight is an important disease of small grains. It is mainly caused by members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC). Barley and wheat growers spray fungicides, especially demethylation-inhibitor fungicides, to suppress the disease. The objective of this study was to examine the changes in the sensitivity of the FGSC population to the triazole fungicide, propiconazole. A total of 124 and 350 isolates of FGSC were obtained from barley and wheat in Jeolla Province during 2010-2016 and 2020-2021, respectively. The species identity and trichothecene chemotypes of the FGSC isolates were determined based on polymerase chain reaction assays targeting translation elongation factor 1-alpha and TRI12 genes, respectively. Sensitivity to propiconazole was determined based on the effective concentration that reduced 50% of the mycelial growth (EC50) using the agar dilution method. Of all isolates, F. asiaticum with the nivalenol chemotype was the most common (83.9% in 2010-2016 and 96.0% in 2020-2021), followed by F. asiaticum with the 3-acetyl deoxynivalenol chemotype (12.1% in 2010-2016 and 2.9% in 2020-2021). The EC50 values of the isolates collected in 2010-2016 and 2020-2021 ranged from 0.0180 to 11.0166 μg/mL and 1.3104 to 17.9587 μg/mL, respectively. The mean EC50 value of the isolates increased from 3.8648 μg/mL in 2010-2016 to 5.9635 μg/mL in 2020-2021. The baseline resistance to propiconazole was determined to be 7 μg/mL, based on the EC50 value of isolates collected in 2010-2016, and the ratio of resistant isolates increased from 9.7% in 2010-2016 to 28.6% in 2020-2021.

This study was conducted to identify yeast species isolated from domestic pear blossom through gene sequencing and analysis of morphological characteristics, and to confirm specific yeast species inhibitory effects toward fire blight in immature apples, pears, and crab apple blossoms. Yeast morphological characteristics were consistent with the known characteristics of Aureobasidium pullulans. Nucleotide sequencing of the D1/D2 region of large-subunit (LSU) 26S ribosomal DNA and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region confirmed its identity as A. pullulans (MHAU2101). Inoculation of immature fruits with A. pullulans MHAU2101 before exposure to Erwinia amylovora prevented fire blight symptoms in apples and pears. A. pullulans MHAU2101 treated crab apple blossoms had a significantly lower flower infection rate than untreated blossoms, revealing 64% of the potency of streptomycin. The A. pullulans MHAU2101 treated group also displayed lower E. amylovora density in both pistil and hypanthium compared to the untreated group, especially in the hypanthium. This study confirms that A. pullulans MHAU2101 isolated from domestic pear blossom can effectively suppress the onset of fire blight.

Abstract Tractor cab interior noise is a risk factor that degrades operators’ work performance and threatens their health; therefore, the noise must be reduced to ensure farmworkers’ safety and efficiency. Cab interior noise can be classified as structure-borne noise and air-borne noise. Structure-borne noise has been extensively studied. However, although air-borne noise greatly contributes to cab interior noise, detailed frequency-domain analyses have not been performed. In this study, the components of cab interior noise were identified in the frequency domain through an order analysis, which helped improve the sound insulation of the cab and reduce the effects of air-borne noise. A test was performed while driving a tractor on a chassis dynamometer in a semi-anechoic chamber for reproducible measurement and evaluation. The A-weighted sound pressure was transformed by a fast Fourier transform algorithm, and its order was tracked by the engine speed signal. In addition, a direct path was identified by acoustic images using a sound camera. The contributions of major noise sources were identified through an order analysis. We proved that air-borne noise significantly contributes to the interior noise of tractor cabs and that improvement of the cab sound insulation is an effective noise-reduction technique.

Abstract Background Despite the great potential of FUS-BBB disruption (FUS-BBBD), it is still controversial whether FUS-BBBD acts as an inducing factor of neuro-inflammation or not, and the biological responses after FUS-BBBD triggers the inflammatory process are poorly understood. The aim of this study is to investigate the safety window for FUS levels based on a comprehensive safety assessment. Methods The mice were treated with two different ultrasound parameters (0.25 MPa and 0.42 MPa) in the thalamus region of brain. The efficacy of BBB opening was verified by dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and the cavitation monitoring. The transcriptome analysis was performed to investigate the molecular response for the two BBBD conditions after FUS-mediated BBB opening in time-dependent manners. Histological analysis was used for evaluation of the tissue damage, neuronal degeneration, and activation of glial cells induced by FUS-BBBD. Results The BBBD, as quantified by the K trans , was approximately threefold higher in 0.42 MPa-treated group than 0.25 MPa-treated group. While the minimal tissue/cellular damage was found in 0.25 MPa-treated group, visible damages containing microhemorrhages and degenerating neurons were detected in 0.42 MPa-treated group in accordance with the extent of BBBD. In transcriptome analysis, 0.42 MPa-treated group exhibited highly dynamic changes in the expression levels of an inflammatory response or NF-κB pathway-relative genes in a time-dependent manner whereas, 0.25 MPa was not altered. Interestingly, although it is clear that 0.42 MPa induces neuroinflammation through glial activation, neuroprotective properties were evident by the expression of A2-type astrocytes. Conclusions Our findings propose that a well-defined BBBD parameter of 0.25 MPa could ensure the safety without cellular/tissue damage or sterile inflammatory response in the brain. Furthermore, the fact that the excessive sonication parameters at 0.42 MPa could induce a sterile inflammation response via glial activation suggested the possibility that could lead to tissue repair toward the homeostasis of the brain microenvironment through A2-type reactive astrocytes.

Abstract This study undertook to determine the changes in the numbers of outpatient visits for various ophthalmic diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with before. The monthly outpatient visits for 14 common ophthalmic diseases were enumerated based on the ICD-10 codes in Korean National Health Insurance Service data. The differences in the mean outpatient visits and disease variance ‘before’ and ‘during COVID-19’ were calculated. Subsequently, subgroup analyses according to age and sex were performed.
