A sinner’s justification before God is wholly of grace, without merit in him of any kind or degree; as it is written, “ Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us ” (Titus iii. 5). This justification is obtained-simply in belii'ing the record which God has given of His Son ; as it is written, “ To him that worketh not, but.believeth on "him that justifieth the ungodty, his faith is counted for righteous­ness.” (Rom. iv. 5). Not oUr goodness, but the good­ness of Him who alone is good. Not merit, jji us, but solely the grace or free love that is in. God. Not works . done by us, but faith in the great work done by another, even by the Son of God. Thus it is that a sinner is justified. The word justify is one used in law, and in courts of law. In Scripture it is made use of ju3t as it is in law. It does not refer to the inner or moral character of a man, but solely to his state in -the eye of the law. It has not anything to do with what the man is or is not in himself\ but solely with what the law sa}'s he is, either guilty or not guilty. A man ma}" be deeply in ■debt; but if another pays.the debt, the law looks on him as i f he had never owed a farthing. So is it in the things of God. God’s justification is, a declaration in law, o f the man’s being set free from the charges made against him. It does not determine his moral character, but simply his legal standing. It is God’s judicial act • o f absolution as the great executor o f the law. It is the legal decision of the highest court of justice, the Divine tribunal, in our favour, reversing all sentences o f con­demnation that might be threatening us, arresting all, processes of law that might be carrying on against us, and pronouncing us legally innocent and righteous—men against whom the law has no longer any claim. • To, Purchase; Parkman Fund; Aug. 3, 1962.
