Abstract

We describe the signal-processing firmware and software for a frequency-domain multiplexed (FDM) biasing and demodulation system that reads out Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometer arrays for mm-wavelength cosmology telescopes. This system replaces a mixed-signal readout backend with a much smaller, more power-efficient system relying on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for control, computation and signal processing. The new system is sufficiently robust, automated, and power efficient to be flown on stratospheric balloon-borne telescopes and is being further developed for satellite applications.

10. Phase Shift Sequences for an Adding Interferometer

Abstract

Cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarimetry has the potential to provide revolutionary advances in cosmology. Future experiments to detect the very weak B mode signal in CMB polarization maps will require unprecedented sensitivity and control of systematic errors. Bolometric interferometry may provide a way to achieve these goals. In a bolometric interferometer (or other adding interferometer), phase shift sequences are applied to the inputs in order to recover the visibilities. Noise is minimized when the phase shift sequences corresponding to all visibilities are orthogonal. We present a systematic method for finding sequences that produce this orthogonality, approximately minimizing both the length of the time sequence and the number of discrete phase shift values required. When some baselines are geometrically equivalent, we can choose sequences that read out those baselines simultaneously, which has been shown to improve signal to noise ratio., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

We present the design and characterization of the polarbear experiment. polarbear will measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales ranging from the experiment's 3.5′ beam size to several degrees. The experiment utilizes a unique focal plane of 1,274 antenna-coupled, polarization sensitive TES bolometers cooled to 250 milliKelvin. Employing this focal plane along with stringent control over systematic errors, polarbear has the sensitivity to detect the expected small scale B-mode signal due to gravitational lensing and search for the large scale B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. polarbear was assembled for an engineering run in the Inyo Mountains of California in 2010 and was deployed in late 2011 to the Atacama Desert in Chile. An overview of the instrument is presented along with characterization results from observations in Chile. © 2012 SPIE.

Collecting statistical data about database usage by library patrons aids in the management of CD-ROM and database offerings, collection development, and evaluation of training programs. Two approaches to data collection are presented which should be used together: an automated or nonintrusive method which monitors search sessions while the intrusive method gathers data from patrons. Abstract

This paper presents the results of a year-long study of users of CLIB91, a census data package, in an academic library. The results of this study are used to critically evaluate CLIB91 and both strengths and weaknesses with the package are highlighted. The paper goes on to recommend the use of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Internet site as complementary source of census data for academic users., Providing census and other statistical data in an academic library can be accomplished in various ways. A census data package, CLIB91, has been studied over a one-year period in an academic library, that at the University of Wollongong (UOW). The study found strengths and weaknesses.
