Ginger was steamed at 121 ℃ and 1.5 lb/in2 for 30 min, dried at 60℃ for 12 h, and each step was repeated nine times. During processing, the lightness (L* value) and yellowness (b* value) decreased from 85.65±0.33 and 26.99±0.20 in the non-treated ginger to 56.91±0.25 and 16.69±0.06 in ginger treated for the ninth treatment. On the other hand, redness (a* value) increased from -1.51±0.03 to 7.34±0.08 on the eight treatment and then decreased to 7.21±0.04 on the ninth theatment. The contents of 6-gingerol decreased from 3.257±0.067 mg/g in the non-treated ginger to 0.567±0.036 mg/g on the theatment, whereas the contents of 6-shogaol increased from 1.299±0.050 mg/g to 2.999±0.089 mg/g on the sixth treatment and decreased to 2.099±0.039 on the ninth treatment. The contents of 10-gingerol decreased slightly from 1.106±0.125 mg/g to 0.806±0.026 mg/g. Unlike the 6- and 10-gingerol, the contents of 8-gingerol did not change greatly, with values between 0.916±0.005 mg/g and 1.106±0.005 mg/g being observed during processing. The tyrosinase inhibitory activities were increased from 43.42±11.45% in the non-treated ginger to 100% on the sixth treatment and then decreased to 51.98±7.36% on the theatment. The antioxidative active-ity was retained during processing.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of allergic diseases and its related factorsin Korean adolescents. The subjects were 72,435 middle and high school students. The data were analyzed by test and multiple logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis was 9.3%, 30.6%, and 23.4%, respectively. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, asthma was associated with gender, age, economic state, obesity, stress, sleep satisfaction, secondhand smoking, drug use, other allergic diseases and physical activity. Allergic rhinitis was associated with age, economic state, residential area, type of residence, obesity, stress, sleep satisfaction, smoking experience, secondhand smoking, alcohol drinking, other allergic diseases and physical activity. Finally, atopic dermatitis was associated with gender, age, economic state, residential area, obesity, stress, other allergic diseases and physical activity. Conclusion: These results will provide database for prevention and management of allergic diseases.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among self-leadership, critical thinking disposition, satisfaction of clinical practice and clinical practice competency of nursing students. Participants were 199 baccalaureate nursing students (3rd and 4th grades) in 2 cities. The data was collected by questionnaires and were analyzed with the SPSS/Win 21.0 program, using descriptive statistics, Pearson`s correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Significant positive correlations were among self-leadership, critical thinking disposition, satisfaction of clinical practice and clinical practice competency. The regression model explained 30.4% of satisfaction of clinical practice. The significant predictors of satisfaction of clinical practice were clinical experience, satisfaction of major, self-leadership and critical thinking disposition. The regression model explained 23.7% of clinical practice competency. Health status, self-leadership and critical thinking disposition were factors influencing clinical practice competency. It should strengthen self-leadership and encourage critical thinking disposition to improve nursing students` satisfaction of clinical practice and clinical practice competency.

Purpose: This study was conducted to explore predictors of health status of family caregivers of hospice patients. Methods: This study included 118 family caregivers of patients who were admitted to the hospice ward of three general hospitals in D city. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression us ing the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results: The mean score for overall health of family caregivers was 2.68 (±0.42). Mean scores for variables related to health were 2.55 (±0.37) for sleep quality, 1.91 (± 0.41) for anxiety and 2.78 (± 0.33) for hope. Variables such as sleep quality, gender, anxiety and hope explained 59.8% of variance among family caregivers’ health conditions. Conclusion: These results suggest the need for nurses to search for ways to promote health of hospice patients’ family caregivers, such as improving the quality of sleep, easi ng their anxiety and encouraging hope.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-directed learning ability and creativity on college adjustment in nursing students. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 148 nursing students in October, 2010. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: A positive correlation was found for college adjustment with self-directed learning ability and creativity. Self-directed learning ability and major satisfaction were significant predictors of college adjustment. The model explained 44.1% of the valuables. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that self-directed learning be considered when developing strategies to increase college adjustment in nursing students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing clinical competence in nursing students. Method: The participants were 125 nursing students and data were collected from October 8 to December 18, 2010 using questionnaires with. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were significant correlations for creativity, problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and clinical competence. The factor influencing clinical competence the most was creativity, followed by problem-solving ability, self-directed learning ability, and grade point average score. The regression model explained 37% of variance in clinical competence. Conclusion: The results indicate that for improvement in the clinical competence of nursing students, it is necessary to develop strategies and education programs to enhance creativity, problem-solving ability, and self-directed learning ability.

Carotenoid-producing yeast Rhodosporidium babjevae JI-1 was isolated from citrus fruit peel. The red pigment produced by R. babjevae JI-1 was confirmed as β-carotene. Viability of rat hepatocytes treated with R. babjevae JI-1 cell extract at 20–1,000 μg/mL was about 85.1±15.1–100±14.5%.

This article challenges a recent proposal for the theoretical interpretation of L1 and L2 interaction that results from the abrupt change of language environment in internationally adopted children. According to this proposal (Pallier, Dehaene, Poline, LeBihan, Argenti, Depoux and Mehler, 2003; Ventureyra, Pallier and Yoo, 2004), such children experience a total loss of their L1, while, as adults, they exhibit a nativelike ultimate attainment of their L2. These authors suggest that what they see as a total loss of L1 allows a resetting of the neural network that normally subserves L1 retention and hence permits a complete acquisition of the L2. Data from two of our own research projects, one on L1 remnants in Korean adoptees in Sweden (see Park, forthcoming), and the other on age of acquisition and ultimate L2 attainment of Swedish (see Abrahamsson and Hyltenstam, in press), which included data from Latin American adoptees in Sweden among other participants, suggest (i) that L1 remnants are indeed maintained, (ii) that L2 attainment isnotenhanced by severe L1 attrition, and (iii) that there is an age dimension to both the degree of L1 attrition and the level of L2 ultimate attainment in international adoptees. We therefore contend that a maturational interpretation of language replacement data is preferable.
