1. Identification of the parameters of rainfall-runoff models at ungaged locations: can we benefit from the regionalization of flow statistics?

Abstract: International audience, This study aims at finding the most likely parameter sets for an ungauged catchments, when an ensemble of parameter sets has been generated for one or more hydrologically similar donor catchments. We find ourselves in a situation where we suspect that these parameters, although equally acceptable for the donor catchment, are not equally valid for the ungauged catchment we are interested in. We need to add an additional constraint to sort the parameter sets. Here, we want to use as additional constraint the output of previous regionalization studies, i.e. studies which aimed at identifying 'simpler' caracteristics of the ungaged catchments (long-term annual flow, high-and lowquantiles of the long-term catchment behavior, etc.) The interest of such a procedure comes from our experience with the regionalization of statistical flow values: it is a somewhat easier exercise, compared with the regionalization of model parameters (physiographic information seem to be a better explicans for statistical flow values than for model parameter values). We show here that we can find a solution to combine constraints from different regionalization relationships, to reflect their uncertainty and possible complementarity. We illustrate our method on a large set of 900 French catchments. The application on a large dataset allows us to evaluate the strenghts and weaknesses of the proposed method.

Abstract: International audience; We consider $\sigma$-models on para-complex $\mathbb{Z}_T$-cosets, which are analogues of those on complex homogeneous target spaces considered recently by D. Bykov. For these models, we show the existence of a gauge-invariant Lax connection whose Poisson brackets are ultralocal. Furthermore, its light-cone components commute with one another in the sense of Poisson brackets. This extends a result of O. Brodbeck and M. Zagermann obtained twenty years ago for hermitian symmetric spaces.

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation of the electrokinetic propagation of acid or base fronts through clayey soil. The experimental study included measuring the electric current, the mass of water extracted, and the advance of the acid and base fronts in synthetic sediment composed of 25% kaolinite and 75% silt. The results show that the flux rate remains constant over time and that the medium acidifies with time. The numerical model is based on the transport equations and, by considering adsorption and auto-ionization of water, it describes the temporal evolution of pH in the specimen. The experimental evaluation of the adsorption isotherms allows us to calculate the retardation factor, which is 69 and 19.5 for the hydronium and hydroxyl ions, respectively. Given these retardation factors, the results of the numerical model are consistent with experimental results and show how the acid and base fronts evolve in a saturated porous medium. Numerical model results show that electromigration is the major contributor to the migration of ions in the porous medium during electrokinetic treatment.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]RIVAGE [ADD1_IRSTEA]Hydrosystèmes et risques naturels [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]RIVAGE [ADD1_IRSTEA]Hydrosystèmes et risques naturels; International audience; This report presents a new large-scale test apparatus (LSTA) developed to assess the efficiency of a geosynthetic reinforcement for the limitation of deformations of a geosynthetic lining system (GLS) over a 0.5 m wide cavity. Two experiments were conducted. The first one involved a geosynthetic clay liner, a nonwoven needle-punched geotextile and a high-density polyethylene geomembrane. For the second experiment, a 50 kN/m polyvinyl alcohol geogrid was embedded within the sand layer below the geosynthetic clay liner to provide reinforcement above the cavity. An overburden pressure varying from 10 to 100 kPa was applied to the top of the GLS. Strain gauges were used to measure the strain within the geogrid and the geomembrane. The results proved that the 50 kN/m geogrid reinforcement beneath the geomembrane reduced the maximum strain within the geomembrane, compared to the case where the geomembrane was unreinforced, by 25% on average. The results showed that the overall strain within the geomembrane was 31% to 42% less than that of the geogrid above the cavity. Finally, the results showed that the spatial distribution of the strain within the geomembrane and that of the geogrid differed because of a conical shape of the collapsed zone.

Abstract: International audience; This study aims to evaluate the anthropogenic pressure in the St. Lawrence River by assessing the relationships between chemical contamination of sediments and benthic community structure with the trait-based approach. Organic and inorganic contaminants as well as other sediment variables (sediment grain size, total organic carbon, nutrients, etc.) and benthic invertebrate assemblages were determined in 59 sites along the river. Biological and ecological traits of taxa were coded, taking into account regional dimate and ecosystem conditions. The aims of this study were to (1) describe the relationships between traits and macroinvertebrate taxa and identify homogeneous dusters of taxa with the same combinations of functional traits, (2) describe spatial patterns in traits of macroinvertebrates in the St. Lawrence River, (3) link trait-based metrics and site groups to sediment quality and (4) define a trait-based strategy for diagnosing the ecological quality of the St. Lawrence River. Seven groups of taxa sharing similar trait-category attributes were defined. Moreover, four groups of sites were identified using the 'K-mean' non-hierarchical clustering approach. The 'IndVal' method enabled us to specifically defined trait categories corresponding to site groups on the basis of their indicator value. The relative abundances of taxa from five functional groups significantly varied among site groups. For example, some indicator traits such as multivolline cycle, long life span, fixed dutches, tegumental respiration, asexual reproduction, and collector/gatherer feeding habit were associated to the most heavily polluted sites located in the Montreal harbour which showed the highest sediment concentrations in Pb. Zn and Cu. Three trait-based pressure-specific models were built, based on the random forest approach, for respectively (1) heavy metals. (2) BPCs and PAHs, and (3) TBTs occurring in the environment. Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]TED [ADD1_IRSTEA]Valoriser les effluents et déchets organiques; International audience; Nitrifying biologically active filters (BAFs) have been found to be high emitters of nitrous oxide (N2O), a powerful greenhouse gas contributing to ozone layer depletion. While recent models have greatly improved our understanding of the triggers of N2O emissions from suspended-growth processes, less is known about N2O emissions from full-scale biofilm processes.Tertiary nitrifying BAFs have been modeled at some occasions but considering strong simplifications on the description of gas-liquid exchanges which are not appropriate for N2O prediction. In this work, a tertiary nitrifying BAF model including the main N2O biological pathways was developed and confronted to full-scale data from Seine Aval, the largest wastewater resource recovery facility in Europe. A mass balance on the gaseous compounds was included in order to correctly describe the N2O gas-liquid partition, thus N2O emissions. Preliminary modifications of the model structure were made to include the gas phase as a compartment of the model, which significantly affected the prediction of nitrification. In particular, considering gas hold-up influenced the prediction of the hydraulic retention time, thus nitrification performances: a 3.5% gas fraction reduced ammonium removal by 13%, as the liquid volume, small in such systems, is highly sensitive to the gas presence. Finally, the value of the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient was adjusted to successfully predict both nitrification and N2O emissions.

Abstract: Conceptual degree-day snow models are often calibrated using runoff observations. This makes the snow models dependent on the rainfall-runoff model they are coupled with. Numerous studies have shown that using Snow Cover Area (SCA) remote sensing observation from MODIS satellites helps to better constrain parameters. The objective of this study was to calibrate the CemaNeige degree-day snow model with SCA and runoff observations. In order to calibrate the snow model with SCA observations, the original CemaNeige SCA formulation was revisited to take into account the hysteresis that exists between SCA and the snow water equivalent (SWE) during the accumulation and melt phases. Several parametrizations of the hysteresis between SWE and SCA were taken from land surface model literature. We showed that they improve the performances of SCA simulation without degrading the river runoff simulation. With this improvement, a new calibration method of the snow model was developed using jointly SCA and runoff observations. Further analysis showed that the CemaNeige calibrated parameter sets are more robust for simulating independent periods than parameter sets obtained from discharge calibration only. Calibrating the snow model using only SCA data gave mixed results, with similar performances as using median parameters from all watersheds calibration.

Abstract: International audience; Bacteria and their bacteriophages coexist and coevolve for the benefit of both in a mutualistic association. Multiple mechanisms are used by bacteria to resist phages in a trade-off between survival and maintenance of fitness. In vitro studies allow inquiring into the fate of virus and host in different conditions aimed at mimicking natural environment. We analyse here the mutations emerging in a clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain in response to infection by Ab09, a N4-like lytic podovirus and describe a variety of chromosomal deletions and mutations conferring resistance. Some deletions result from illegitimate recombination taking place during long-term maintenance of the phage genome. Phage variants with mutations in a tail fiber gene are selected during pseudolysogeny with the capacity to infect resistant cells and produce large plaques. These results highlight the complex host/phage association and suggest that phage Ab09 promotes bacterial chromosome rearrangements. Finally this study points to the possible role of two bacterial genes in Ab09 phage adhesion to the cell, rpsB encoding protein S2 of the 30S ribosomal subunit and ORF1587 encoding a Wzy-like membrane protein involved in LPS biosynthesis.

Abstract: Three distinct biological reactors fed with synthetic medium (UASB_Control), synthetic medium and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS; UASB_SL), and real laundry wastewater (UASB_LW) were compared using a metatranscriptomic approach to determine putative bioindicator genes and taxonomies associated to all steps of anaerobic LAS biodegradation pathway. A homemade bioinformatics pipeline combined with an R workflow was developed to perform the RNAseq data analysis. UASB_SL and UASB_LW showed similar values of LAS biological degradation (~47%) and removal (53-55%). Rarefaction analysis revealed that 1-2 million reads were sufficient to access the whole functional capacity. In the first step of LAS biodegradation pathway, fumarate reductase subunit C was detected and taxonomically assigned to the genus Syntrophobacter (0.002% - UASB_SL; 0.0015% - UASB_LW; not detected - UASB_Control). In the second step, many enzymes related to beta-oxidation were observed and most of them with low relative abundance in UASB Control and taxonomically related with Smithella, Acinetobacter and Syntrophorhabdus. For the ring cleavage step, the abundance of 6 OCH CoA hydrolase putative gene was ten times higher in UASB_SL and UASB_LW when compared to UASB_Control, and assigned to Desulfomonile and Syntrophorhabdus. Finally, the adenylylsulfate reductase, taxonomically related with Desulfovibrio and Desulfomonile, was observed in the desulfonation step with the highest relative abundance in UASB_LW.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]QUASARE [ADD1_IRSTEA]Dynamique et fonctionnement des écosystèmes; International audience; Trophic ecology is the study of feeding interactions and food acquisition by organisms. It includes the causes and consequences of those behaviours at all levels of biological organisation. As a field of research, it crosses many disciplinary boundaries and provides knowledge that is pertinent to many other areas of ecology. Here we list and categorise the methods available to trophic ecologists whose toolbox has broadened considerably in recent years. They encompass empirical and numerical approaches with focus ranging from molecules to ecosystems. We further examine the relationship of each method to features such as the scale of observation (from microbes to largest organisms) and organisational level (from individuals to ecosystems) as well as the ecological question the method is capable of answering (from detecting predator-prey relationships to studying implications and consequences at different scales). Our survey reveals a very wide range of methodologies, each more-or-less appropriate for a particular line of research. It also identifies deficits, for example, trophic interactions at microscopic scales, for which empirical methods have hardly been used, as well as trophic models that have failed to consider fluxes at the ecosystem scale. Furthermore, we note that the combination of methodologies remains under-exploited despite great opportunities to solve complex ecological questions and to foster the emergence of new insights and hypotheses regarding organism, population and/or ecosystem properties.

The objective of this work was to give insights into the consequences of abrupt temperature modifications on the microbiota of anaerobic digestion. Two complementary experiments were performed. A continuously stirred lab-scale bioreactor (5-L) simulated the functioning of a semi-continuous industrial digester. Five batch-fed incubations (1-L) served as replicated experiments. Each experiment was divided into three successive steps: reactors were first operated at 35 degrees C followed by an abrupt increase to 55 degrees C and finally a decrease to 35 degrees C. After the first temperature shock, gas production rate increased temporarily and then fell for 1 month before a new steady-state was reached. When temperature was reset to 35 degrees C in step 3 gas production decreased sharply again. The semi-continuous reactor recovered after 15 days while the batch-fed incubations never recovered. Ecological changes associated to these performance drops and recovery were sought using 16S sequencing of Bacteria and Archaea and multivariate analyses. In brief, Bacteroidales order was rapidly and strongly affected by temperature increase, while Clostridiales became dominant in thermophilic conditions. Several thermotolerant Bacteria were identified as responsible for reactors early recovery, but were outcompeted by a very diverse bacterial population a few weeks after temperature shock. Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium Archaea dominated at 35 degrees C but were slowly replaced by thermophilic Methanoculleus or Methanosarcina at 55 degrees C that were essential to methane production. In step 3, when returning to initial temperature conditions after the thermophilic period, Ruminococcaceae and Methanobacterium appeared to drive digester resilience.

Abstract: Analyses on bacterial, archaeal communities at family level and methane-production metabolism were conducted in thirteen full-scale and pilot-scale anaerobic sludge digesters. These digesters were operated at different conditions regarding solids concentration, sludge retention time, organic loading rate and feedstock composition, seeking to optimize digester capacity. Correlations between process parameters and identified microbial phylotypes were evaluated based on relative abundance of these phylotypes determined by Quantitative PCR and 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Results showed that, Total Solids concentration (TS), among the evaluated operational parameters, demonstrated the most positive correlation with chemical parameters (including NH3 and VFAs) and significant impact on the abundance of key microbial phylotypes regardless of other factors. Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]BELCA; National audience; L’évaluation de la qualité des environnements fortement anthropisés, tel que le bassin de la Seine, et donc assujettis à des apports chroniques très complexes, constitue un véritable challenge et doit s’appuyer conjointement sur des analyses chimiques du milieu et les réponses du biote face à cette pression. La présente étude propose l’intégration et la synthèse d’un jeu de données pluridisciplinaire varié acquis lors du suivi de trois sites-ateliers le long de la Seine (à l’amont et à l’aval de Paris) au cours de quatre campagnes étalées sur une année, dans le cadre du programme PIREN-Seine (Phase 6). L’analyse repose sur l’application de l’approche « Weight-of-Evidence » consistant à examiner quatre volets ou lines of evidence combinant analyses chimiques du milieu (eau et sédiment), biodisponibilité des contaminants (bioaccumulation) et mesures de biomarqueurs chez des gammares exposés in situ, et réponses de tests de toxicité en laboratoire. Les résultats de chaque LOE reflètent parfaitement le gradient anthropique de la zone d’étude avec des niveaux de contaminations et des perturbations biologiques croissants de l’amont à l’aval de Paris. En se basant sur la moyenne annuelle, le risque environnemental global a pu être classé comme « modéré » pour le site amont et « sévère » pour les deux sites aval. L’analyse a également permis de mettre en évidence une certaine variabilité saisonnière, identifiant la campagne hivernale comme la moins fortement impactée. Le modèle a notamment été affiné par l’utilisation de valeurs de référence et de seuils de réponses issus d’études menées à large échelle géographique et intégrant certains facteurs confondants. La démarche appliquée ici s’est avérée très adaptée et performante, et pourrait représenter un outil d’aide à la décision d’un intérêt indéniable pour les différents acteurs environnementaux dans le cadre d’une analyse du risque environnemental.

Abstract: Depuis une trentaine d'années, les géomembranes sont largement employées dans les ouvrages hydrauliques, notamment pour assurer leur étanchéité. Dans un souci de préservation de l'environnement, il est donc essentiel de mieux connaître la durabilité de ces produits, afin d'optimiser leur conception et leur utilisation. Ici, il est question d'évaluer la performance de deux familles de géomembranes bitumineuses, l'une en bitume élastomère et l'autre en bitume oxydé, installées dans le même bassin depuis quinze ans. Les résultats permettront de fournir des préconisations d'utilisation essentielles pour les producteurs et les exploitants d'ouvrages.

Abstract: Flood modelling has become an essential issue in today's society, due to the expansion of urban areas into the floodplains. It is now necessary, for the safety of people, to be able to forecast the position of inundated zones produced by a flood event. Flood forecasting already exists but it only deals with discharge estimations in order to alert public authorities in case of an overflowing event. The delimitation of inundated areas is still a work in progress, and it need several approaches to provide relevant information to crisis managers.This PhD aims to develop and test a methodology applicable anywhere in France with easily available data, able to provide a large-scale and meso-scale assessment of inundated territories while still being usable in a forecasting context. Two models have been developed : first, a conceptual water spreading algorithm that estimates the overflowing water volume and spreads it along the river network and then a more physical method which computes reach-scale relationships between the discharge and the height above nearest drainage (HAND) from simplified hydraulic equations. If the former has rapidly reached its limits, the latter, called MHYST, has shown a real potential by correctly modelling up to 80% of the inundation extent resulting from the May-June event on the Loing catchment.This work showed that it was possible to generate inundation maps from limited data and, above all, easily available data, thanks to simple conceptual methodologies based on a simplified representation of the river beds. The models developed in this PhD satisfied the objectives of this project, even if some interrogations remain, in particular about the estimation of bankfull discharge, which is still a problematic issue, the production of spatially accurate observations of inundated areas which are used to calibrate and validate inundation models, or the handling of complex situations such as flash floods and heavily urbanised areas.; La modélisation des inondations -- c'est-à-dire la production de cartes synthétiques à partir de méthodes numériques -- est un enjeu primordial dans notre société. L'urbanisation des lits majeurs a en effet multiplié les enjeux, et il est aujourd'hui indispensable, pour la sécurité des populations, d'être capable de prévoir les zones inondées consécutives à un évènement de crue. Si la prévision des débits permet déjà de lancer l'alerte en cas de crue débordante, la détermination précise des zones inondées qui en résultent est encore en développement, diverses approches ayant été proposées afin de fournir des données pertinentes aux gestionnaires de crise.Ce travail de thèse a cherché à développer des outils numériques -- des modèles -- complémentaires aux modèles hydrauliques classiques, limités par le manque de données géométriques précises des lits des rivières. L'objectif de ce travail est de développer une approche applicable sur l'ensemble du territoire avec des données facilement accessibles afin de fournir une vision à grande, moyenne et petite échelle tout en étant adaptable à un contexte de prévision opérationnelle, en se nourrissant par exemple des débits prévus par un modèle hydrologique. Deux méthodes ont ainsi été étudiées : tout d'abord un algorithme conceptuel de répartition des volumes débordés le long du réseau hydrographique, puis une méthodologie plus physique, liant des équations d'hydraulique simplifiée à un modèle conceptuel (HAND) dans le but de créer des relations débit-hauteur débordée à l'échelle du tronçon. Si le premier méthode a finalement montré ses limites, la seconde, baptisée MHYST, a montré un fort potentiel en modélisant correctement jusqu'à 80% de l'évènement débordant de mai-juin 2016 sur le Loing.Ces travaux ont permis de montrer qu'il était possible de simuler des inondations à partir d'une quantité de données restreintes, et par dessus tout, avec des données facilement accessibles, grâce à des méthodologies simplifiées qui partent d'une représentation équivalente des lits de rivières. Si les modèle développés ont permis de répondre aux principaux objectifs de la thèse, certaines questions restent en suspens, notamment en ce qui concerne l'estimation du débit de plein bord, la centralisation de cartes d'inondations observées de qualité ou encore le traitement des situations les plus complexes telles que les crues og éclair fg{} et les zones fortement urbanisées.

Abstract: This paper investigates the temporal transposability of hydrological models under contrasted climate conditions and evaluates the added value of using an ensemble of model structures for flow simulation. This is achieved by applying the Differential Split Sample Test procedure to twenty lumped conceptual models on a catchment in the Province of Québec (Canada) and another one in the State of Bavaria (Germany). First, a calibration/validation procedure was applied on four historical non-continuous periods with contrasted climate conditions. Then, model efficiency was quantified individually (for each model) and collectively (for the model ensemble). The individual analysis evaluated model performance and robustness. The ensemble investigation, based on the average of simulated discharges, focused on the twenty-member ensemble and all possible model subsets. Results showed that using a single model may provide hazardous results when the model is to be applied in contrasted conditions. Overall, some models turned out as a good compromise in terms of performance and robustness, but generally not as much as the twenty-model ensemble. Model subsets offered yet improved performance over the twenty-model ensemble, but at the expanse of spatial transposability (i.e. need of site-specific analysis).

Abstract: International audience; AbstractThis study addresses the spatio-temporal dynamics of per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in a highly urbanized freshwater hydrosystem, the Seine River (NW France). The distribution of PFASs between water, sediment, and periphytic biofilm was investigated at three sampling sites along a longitudinal gradient upstream and downstream from the Paris urban area. Seasonal variability was assessed through four sampling campaigns performed under contrasting hydrological conditions. In the dissolved phase, ∑PFASs fluctuated between 2 and 9 ng L−1 upstream and 6–105 ng L−1 downstream from Paris. Negative correlations between dissolved PFAS levels and river flow rate were generally observed, corroborating the predominance of point-source PFAS inputs at these sites. 18/19 target PFASs were detected, with a predominance of PFHxS and PFOS (20% of ∑PFASs each), except for the farthest downstream site where 6:2 FTSA was prevalent (35 ± 8% of ∑PFASs), likely reflecting industrial and urban inputs. In biofilms, ∑PFASs fell in the 4–32 ng g−1 dw range, and substantial bioconcentration factors (BCFs) were reported for PFNA, PFDA, and PFOS (log BCF 2.1–4.3), higher than those of PFHxS or PFOA. BCFs varied inversely with dissolved PFAS levels, potentially pointing to concentration-dependent bioaccumulation. Biofilm community characteristics (C/N ratio) may also be an influential determinant of PFAS bioaccumulation.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the use of statistical correction techniques in hydrological ensemble prediction. Ensemble weather forecasts (precipitation and temperature) are used as forcing variables to a hydrologic forecasting model for the production of ensemble streamflow forecasts. The impact of different bias correction strategies on the quality of the forecasts is examined. The performance of the system is evaluated when statistical processing is applied: to precipitation and temperature forecasts only (pre-processing from the hydrological model point of view), to flow forecasts (post-processing) and to both. The pre-processing technique combines precipitation ensemble predictions with an analog forecasting approach, while the post-processing is based on past errors of the hydrological model when simulating streamflows. Forecasts from 11 catchments in France are evaluated. Results illustrate the importance of taking into account hydrological uncertainties to improve the quality of operational streamflow forecasts.

Abstract: International audience; As part of the landscape, streams are influenced byland use. Here, we contributed to the understanding of the biological impacts of land use on streams, investigating how landscape effects vary with spatial scales (local vs. regional). We adopted a food web approach integrating both biological structure and functioning, to focus on the overall effect of land use on stream biocoenosis. We selected 17 sites of a small tributary of the Seine River (France) for their contrasted land use, and conducted a natural experiment by sampling three organic matter sources, three macroinvertebrate taxa, and most of the fish community. Using stable isotope analysis, we calculated three food web metrics evaluating two major dimensions of the trophic diversity displayed by the fish community: (i) the diversity of exploited resources and (ii) the trophic level richness. The idea was to examine whether (1) land-use effects varied according to spatial scales, (2) land use affected food webs through an effect on community structure and (3) land use affected food webs through an effect onavailable resources. Beside an increase in trophic diversity from upstream to downstream, our empirical data showed that food webs were influenced by land use in the riparian corridors (local scale). The effect was complex, and depended on site's position along the upstream-downstream gradient. By contrast, land use in the catchment (regional scale) did not influence stream biocoenosis. At the local scale, community structure was weakly influenced by land use, and thus played a minor role in explaining food web modifications. Our results suggested that the amount of available resources at the base of the food web was partly responsible for food web modifications. In addition, changes in biological functioning (i.e. feeding interactions) can also explain another part of the land-use effect. These results highlight the role played by the riparian corridors as a buffer zone, and advocate that riparian corridor should be at the centre of water management attention.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU [TR2_IRSTEA]GEUSI; Previous work of Kchouk et al. has shown that collaboration between agricultural stakeholders, landowners and drinking water supply operators (AEP) is required to select and implement practical solutions to non point source pollution issues, such as the implementation of artificial wetlands (ZTHA). As part of a pilot project in Seine-et-Marne by IRSTEA and to deploy this type of infrastructure, an innovative support approach has been developed on the basis of developing a role-play game in order to stimulate dialogue among stakeholders. In preliminary step, the synthesis of individual interviews with local stakeholders has revealed interactions between them. The process was based on the design and testing of role playing game that allows the link between the upstream and downstream of the pollution between agricultural world and AEP operators, and to debate different types of solutions. Recreating the link between these two worlds and to facilitate their collaboration today is an issue that requires the appropriate tools. Different test and validation phases have been conducted with experts from agricultural domain, researchers and members of the Technical Buffer Zones Group (led by Irstea/Onema). The extended approach helped lead to the production of a role play game called "Res-Eau-lutions Diffuse". This tool is operational and generic in the sense that it touches a shared problem through other territories like Rampillon. It can be easily adapted to other local contexts. The game is based on two complementary levers: changes in practices and management of buffer zones in the territory. Validation tests have helped to highlight the value of this approach to local actors. However, from an operational point of view, it appears that 1) the case of diffuse pollution by nitrate should be included at this stage and 2) a participatory work for re-calibrating the game with stakeholders. This step will be requested to validate and adapt the rules to their territory and make it more legitimate. This would increase the potential of this tool in terms of ownership and relevance to the investigated situation. Indeed, an RPG is more legitimate for players who participated in its construction because it will provide a representation of the situation and of possible actions panel in accordance with their own mental patterns.; Les travaux précédents de Kchouk et al. ont montré qu'une collaboration entre acteurs agricoles, fonciers et de l'alimentation en eau potable (AEP) est nécessaire pour choisir et mettre en ½uvre des solutions concrètes aux problèmes des pollutions diffuses, comme par exemple la mise en place de Zone Tampon Humide Artificielle (ZTHA). Dans le cadre d'un projet pilote mené en Seine-et-Marne par Irstea et visant à déployer ce type d'infrastructures, une démarche d'accompagnement innovante a été développée sur la base du développement d'un jeu de rôles pour stimuler les dialogues entres les acteurs. En étape préalable, la synthèse des entretiens individuels avec des acteurs locaux a révélé ldes interactions existant entre eux. La démarche déployée a permis d'aboutir à la production d'un jeu de rôles nommé « Rés-Eau-lutions Diffuses ». Cet outil est opérationnel et générique dans le sens où il touche une problématique partagée par d'autres territoires que Rampillon, et peut être facilement adapté à d'autres contextes locaux. Le jeu se base sur 2 leviers complémentaires : les changements de pratiques et l'aménagement de zones tampons sur le territoire. Les tests de validation ont permis de mettre en évidence l'intérêt de la démarche auprès des acteurs locaux. Néanmoins, d'un point de vue opérationnel, il apparaît que 1) le cas de la pollution diffuse par le nitrate devrait être intégré à ce stade et 2) qu'un travail préalable participatif de re-calibration avec les acteurs concernés pour valider et adapter le dispositif à leur territoire et le rendre ainsi plus légitime. Ceci augmenterait ainsi les potentialités de cet outil en termes d'appropriation et de pertinence vis-à-vis de la situation étudiée. En effet, un JdR est plus légitime pour des joueurs qui ont participé à sa construction, car il proposera une représentation de la situation et du panel d'actions possibles en concordance avec leurs propres schémas mentaux.

Abstract: International audience; Oxygen reducing biocathodes were formed from sludge under constant polarization at − 0.2 and + 0.4 V/SCE. Under chronoamperometry at pH 10.3 ± 0.3, current densities of 0.21 ± 0.03 and 0.12 ± 0.01 A m− 2 were displayed at − 0.2 V/SCE by the biocathodes formed at − 0.2 and 0.4 V/SCE, respectively. Voltammetry revealed similar general characteristics for all biocathodes and higher diffusion-limited current densities (0.84 ± 0.26 A m− 2) than chronoamperometry. Up to 3.7 A m− 2 was reached under air bubbling. A theoretical model was proposed to show the consistency of the chronoamperometric and voltammetric data. The biocathodes formed at − 0.2 V/ECS that gave the highest electrochemical performance showed a homogeneous selection of Deinococcus–Thermus and Gemmatimonadetes, while the biocathodes formed at 0.4 V/SCE were enriched in different bacteria. The biocathode that led to the worst electrochemical characteristics, while formed at − 0.2 V/SCE, showed the largest bacterial diversity. The biocathode performance was consequently related to the enrichment in specific microbial phyla. Moreover, the strong presence of bacteria parented to Deinococci may also have some interest in biotechnology.

Abstract: International audience; Reference conditions are a key concept in the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD stipulates that the ecological status of a given water body shall be assessed by quantifying the deviation from a set of reference conditions that represent the stable state of an ecosystem in the absence of significant human disturbance. This concept is subject to criticism from several authors, particularly because underlying ecological concepts are weak and the distinction between natural variability and the effects of anthropogenic activities on ecosystem function will become increasingly artificial. In this paper, a sociologist and an aquatic ecologist examine the origin, successes and limits of the reference conditions concept and raise important questions about applying this concept in practice. We argue that this concept fitted specific needs from different institutions and stakeholders which promoted the WFD. Monitoring practices using this concept require some adaptations. Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]BELCA; International audience; The aim of this study was to investigate the repeatability and seasonal variability of the biological response of river biofilms chronically exposed to a multi-metal pressure in an urban contamination gradient. Biofilms were grown on immersed plastic membranes at three sites on the Seine river upstream (site) and downstream (sites 2 and 3) from Paris (France). They were collected in four different seasons (autumn, spring, summer and winter). Biofilm tolerance to Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn was measured using a PICT (Pollution-Induced Community Tolerance) approach with a previously developed short-term toxicity test based on beta-glucosidase (heterotrophic) activity. Metal concentrations in the river and also in the biofilm samples (total and non-exchangeable bio accumulated metals) were also monitored. Biofilm-accumulated metal concentrations reflected the increase of the multi-metal exposure along the urban gradient. These concentrations were strongly correlated with dissolved and particulate organic carbon and with the total metal fraction in the river water, which recalls the significant influence of the environmental parameters on metal uptake processes in river biofilms. Overall, natural biofilms allow monitoring water quality by integrating the variations of a diffuse metal contamination overtime. Tolerance levels globally increased from site 1 to site 3 reflecting the metal pollution gradient measured in the river water collected at the three sites. Cu tolerance tended to increase during warm seasons but no clear seasonal tendency could be found for Ni, Pb and Zn. Furthermore, principal component analysis clearly discriminated samples collected upstream (site 1) from samples collected downstream (sites 2 and 3) along the first principal component which was correlated to the metal gradient. Samples collected in winter were also separated from the others along the second principal component correlated to parameters like water temperature and Total Suspended Solids concentration. This study shows that chronic in situ exposure to environmental metal concentrations has a significant impact on natural biofilms. Biofilm tolerance to metals and biofilm metal bioaccumulation both reflect metal exposure levels although they remain low when compared to Environmental Quality Standards from the European Water Framework Directive. Yet temperature appears as an important environmental variable shaping community structure and response to toxic exposure which shows that the sampling date is an important parameter to consider when using natural river biofilms to assess the impacts of urban pressure.

Abstract: In most habitats, microbial life is organized in biofilms, three-dimensional edifices sustained by extracellular polymeric substances that enable bacteria to resist harsh and changing environments. Under multispecies conditions, bacteria can benefit from the polymers produced by other species (“public goods”), thus improving their survival under toxic conditions. A recent study showed that a Bacillus subtilis hospital isolate (NDmed) was able to protect Staphylococcus aureus from biocide action in multispecies biofilms. In this work, we identified ypqP , a gene whose product is required in NDmed for thick-biofilm formation on submerged surfaces and for resistance to two biocides widely used in hospitals. NDmed and S. aureus formed mixed biofilms, and both their spatial arrangement and pathogen protection were mediated by YpqP. Functional ypqP is present in other natural B. subtilis biofilm-forming isolates. However, the gene is disrupted by the SPβ prophage in the weak submerged-biofilm-forming strains NCIB3610 and 168, which are both less resistant than NDmed to the biocides tested. Furthermore, in a 168 laboratory strain cured of the SPβ prophage, the reestablishment of a functional ypqP gene led to increased thickness and resistance to biocides of the associated biofilms. We therefore propose that YpqP is a new and important determinant of B. subtilis surface biofilm architecture, protection against exposure to toxic compounds, and social behavior in bacterial communities.

Abstract: Summary In this paper, we presented an approach on how to consider the electrode effect on micro-electrical resistivity tomography data. The case study is set on an underground quarry wall under a fire. The used dispositive is made up of 24 rode-like electrodes that reach a depth of about half the electrode spacing. We demonstrate that at such a small scale, with a spacing of 4cm and for a homogeneous model, the effect is diminished with the presence of a superficial conductive layer. We suggested here a methods to do so: by modelling the half-space with complete electrode and by searching for an equivalent EEP depth. Such depth can then be implemented on the real data field for the inversion. We demonstrate here that the electrode effect is also lowered in case of a first conductive layer on field. We also showed that the fire created a first conductive layer and an intermediate layer from 3 to 15 cm that is more resistive than before the fire, where we had a two layers medium (conductive over resistive layer).

The model is driven by observed forcing meteorological data (air temperature, wind velocity, relative air humidity, precipitation and incident solar radiation) to provide a complete estimate of snowpack state.

Abstract: EGU2017, 19th EGU General Assembly , VIENNE, AUTRICHE, 23-/04/2017 - 28/04/2017; An increasing number of operational flood forecasting centres assess the predictive uncertainty associated with their forecasts and communicate it to the end users. This information can match the end-users needs (i.e. prove to be useful for an efficient crisis management) only if it is reliable: reliability is therefore a key quality for operational flood forecasts. In 2015, the French flood forecasting national and regional services (Vigicrues network; www.vigicrues.gouv.fr) implemented a framework to compute quantitative discharge and water level forecasts and to assess the predictive uncertainty. Among the possible technical options to achieve this goal, a statistical analysis of past forecasting errors of deterministic models has been selected (QUOIQUE method, Bourgin, 2014). It is a data-based and nonparametric approach based on as few assumptions as possible about the forecasting error mathematical structure. In particular, a very simple assumption is made regarding the predictive uncertainty distributions for large events outside the range of the calibration data: the multiplicative error distribution is assumed to be constant, whatever the magnitude of the flood. Indeed, the predictive distributions may not be reliable in extrapolation. However, estimating the predictive uncertainty for these rare events is crucial when major floods are of concern. In order to improve the forecasts reliability for major floods, an attempt at combining the operational strength of the empirical statistical analysis and a simple error modelling is done. Since the heteroscedasticity of forecast errors can considerably weaken the predictive reliability for large floods, this error modelling is based on the log-sinh transformation which proved to reduce significantly the heteroscedasticity of the transformed error in a simulation context, even for flood peaks (Wang et al., 2012). Exploratory tests on some operational forecasts issued during the recent floods experienced in France (major spring floods in June 2016 on the Loire river tributaries and flash floods in fall 2016) will be shown and discussed.

Abstract: National audience; La démarche et les outils présentés dans ce guide permettent de diagnostiquer qualitativement et quantitativement les échanges nappe/rivière en tenant compte du degré plus ou moins élevé d’anthropisation. De tels diagnostics contribueront à la préservation de la ressource en eau, des nappes phréatiques et de la biodiversité aquatique sur les bassins versants à enjeux importants. Ils sont issus de travaux de recherche et applicables en contexte alluvionnaire et sédimentaire. Le guide propose une démarche (parties A et B) qui aidera le lecteur à choisir les outils adaptés à son terrain et à ses enjeux et à en interpréter les résultats. Les outils (partie C) sont présentés sous forme de fiches techniques donnant un accès rapide à l’information nécessaire pour les comprendre et les mettre en œuvre : principe, données nécessaires, protocole de mesure, interprétation, exemple de résultats, valeurs guides, points forts et points faibles... Abstract: The genotoxicity of river water dissolved contaminants is usually estimated after grab sampling of river water. Water contamination can now be obtained with passive samplers that allow a time-integrated sampling of contaminants. Since it was verified that low density polyethylene membranes (LDPE) accumulate labile hydrophobic compounds, their use was proposed as a passive sampler. This study was designed to test the applicability of passive sampling for combined chemical and genotoxicity measurements. The LDPE extracts were tested with the umu test (TA1535/pSK1002 ± S9) and the Ames assay (TA98, TA100 and YG1041 ± S9). We describe here this new protocol and its application in two field studies on four sites of the Seine River. Field LDPE extracts were negative with the YG1041 and TA100 and weakly positive with the TA98 + S9 and Umu test. Concentrations of labile mutagenic PAHs were higher upstream of Paris than downstream of Paris. Improvement of the method is needed to determine the genotoxicity of low concentrations of labile dissolved organic contaminants.

Abstract: This thesis aims at exploring the question of temporal scaling in lumped conceptual hydrological modelling. The main objectives of the thesis are to: (i) study the effects of varying the modelling time step on the performance, parameters and structure of hydrological models; (ii) develop a hydrological model operating at different time steps, from daily to sub-hourly, through a unified, robust and coherent modelling framework at different time scales. Our starting point is the chain of conceptual rainfall-runoff models called ‘GR’, developed at Irstea, and in particular the daily ‘GR4J’ lumped model. The GR4J model will be the baseline model to be effectively downscaled up to sub-hourly time steps following a top-down approach. An hourly adaptation of this model had already been proposed in previous research studies, but some questions on the optimality of the structure at sub-daily time steps were still open. This thesis builds on these previous studies on the hourly model and responds to the operational expectations of improving and adapting the model at multiple sub-daily and sub-hourly time steps, which is particularly interesting for flood forecasting applications. For our modelling tests, we built a database of 240 unregulated catchments in metropolitan France, at multiple time steps, from 6-minute to 1 day, using fine time step hydro-climatic datasets available: (i) 6-min rain gauges and higher spatial-density daily reanalysis data for precipitation; (ii) daily temperature data for potential evapotranspiration (making assumptions on sub-daily patterns); (iii) sub-hourly variable time step streamflow data. We investigated the impact of the inputs temporal distribution on model outputs and performance in a flood simulation perspective based on 2400 selected flood events. Then our model evaluation focused on the consistency of model internal fluxes at different time steps, in order to ensure obtaining a satisfactory model performance by a coherent model functioning at multiple time steps. Our model diagnosis led us to identify and test a significant improvement of the model structure at sub-daily time steps based on the complexification of the interception component of the model. Thus, we propose a new version of the model at multiple sub-daily time steps, with the addition of an interception store without extra free parameters. Our tests also confirm the suitability at multiple time steps of a modified groundwater exchange function proposed earlier, leading to overall improved model accuracy and coherence., Cette thèse vise à explorer la question du changement d'échelle temporelle en modélisation hydrologique conceptuelle. Les principaux objectifs sont : (i) étudier les effets du changement du pas de temps sur les performances, les paramètres et la structure des modèles hydrologiques ; (ii) mettre au point un modèle pluie-débit applicable à différents pas de temps. Notre point de départ est le modèle global journalier GR4J, développé à Irstea. Ce modèle a été choisi comme le modèle de référence à adapter à d'autres résolutions plus fines, jusqu'à des pas de temps infra-horaires, en suivant une approche descendante. Pour nos tests, nous avons construit une base de données de 240 bassins versants non influencés en France, à différents pas de temps allant de 6 minutes à 1 jour, en utilisant: (i) les données pluviométriques à 6 minutes et la réanalyse des lames d'eau journalières à plus haute résolution spatiale ; (ii) les données de température journalière pour le calcul de l'évapotranspiration potentielle ; (iii) les données hydrométriques à pas de temps variable. Nous avons étudié l'impact de la distribution temporelle des entrées sur les performances du modèle en se focalisant sur la simulation de crue, sur la base de 2400 événements. Ensuite, notre évaluation du modèle a porté sur l'analyse de la cohérence des flux internes du modèle à différents pas de temps, afin d'assurer une performance satisfaisante à travers un fonctionnement du modèle cohérent. Notre diagnostic du modèle nous a permis d'identifier une amélioration de la structure du modèle à différents pas de temps infra-journaliers basée sur la complexification de la composante d'interception du modèle.

Abstract: Our understanding of hydrological and chemical processes at the catchment scale is limited by our capacity to record the full breadth of the information carried by river chemistry, both in terms of sampling frequency and precision. Here, we present a proof-of-concept study of a lab in the field called the River Lab (RL), based on the idea of permanently installing a suite of laboratory instruments in the field next to a river. Housed in a small shed, this set of instruments performs analyses at a frequency of one every 40 min for major dissolved species (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, SO42−, NO3−) through continuous sampling and filtration of the river water using automated ion chromatographs. The RL was deployed in the Orgeval Critical Zone Observatory, France for over a year of continuous analyses. Results show that the RL is able to capture long-term fine chemical variations with no drift and a precision significantly better than conventionally achieved in the laboratory (up to ±0.5 % for all major species for over a day and up to 1.7 % over 2 months). The RL is able to capture the abrupt changes in dissolved species concentrations during a typical 6-day rain event, as well as daily oscillations during a hydrological low-flow period of summer drought. Using the measured signals as a benchmark, we numerically assess the effects of a lower sampling frequency (typical of conventional field sampling campaigns) and of a lower precision (typically reached in the laboratory) on the hydrochemical signal. The high-resolution, high-precision measurements made possible by the RL open new perspectives for understanding critical zone hydro-bio-geochemical cycles. Finally, the RL also offers a solution for management agencies to monitor water quality in quasi-real time.

Abstract: When water cannot be discharged to superficial water body or the discharge volume needs to be limited, treated wastewater downstream a treatment plant can be infiltrated. Operational and environmental challenges emerge from this practice: how to size infiltration facilities and what will be the impact of the treated wastewater on groundwater quality? Preliminary studies are recommended for soil-based constructed wetlands and compulsory when permanent infiltration is needed. Unfortunately there is no guideline on how to deal with spatial heterogeneity of soil properties. They can greatly influence water pathway in the soil and the quantities of treated wastewater that can infiltrate. The aim of this article is to introduce a methodology that associates geophysical measurements and more localized ones in order to better described the near-surface with a particular focus on field saturated hydraulic conductivity. Starting from the fastest and coarsest method, the suggested hierarchical process allows optimizing the sampling strategies for longer and more accurate measurements. Therefore, such a methodology, while increasing the quality of results, may also reduce the time and cost of preliminary studies. Two applications are presented demonstrating the advantages of associating several methods. They also underline the input of using geophysical methods on soil that have been largely modified by human activity. Lorsqu'il n'existe pas d'autre exutoire possible ou que l'on souhaite réduire les volumes déversés vers le milieu récepteur superficiel, l'eau usée traitée à la sortie des stations d'épuration est infiltrée à proximité. Cette pratique fait émerger des questionnements d'ordre opérationnel et environnemental : comment dimensionner un ouvrage d'infiltration et quels sont les impacts éventuels sur le milieu récepteur souterrain ? Des études préalables sont recommandées pour les zones de rejet végétalisées et obligatoires dans le cas des zones d'infiltration mais aucun document ne précise comment prendre en compte l'hétérogénéité spatiale des propriétés du sol. Ces dernières pouvant fortement influencer le cheminement de l'eau vers la nappe ainsi que les quantités susceptibles d'être infiltrées. Le présent article introduit une méthodologie couplant des mesures géophysiques spatialisées et des mesures ponctuelles afin de décrire au mieux la configuration de la proche surface, notamment sa conductivité hydraulique au champ. Le processus hiérarchique proposé permet, en allant de la mesure la plus rapide et la moins précise, à la mesure la plus longue et la plus précise, d'optimiser les plans d'échantillonnage et ainsi réduire le temps et le coût de l'étude. Deux exemples d'application de la méthodologie sont présentés mettant particulièrement en évidence la complémentarité des outils et l'apport de la géophysique notamment sur des milieux fortement remaniés par l'homme.

Abstract: Many fields such as drought risk assessment or reservoir management can benefit from long-range streamflow forecasts. The simplest way to make probabilistic streamflow forecasts can be to use historical streamflow time series, if available. Another approach is to use ensemble climate scenarios as input to a hydrological model. Climatology (i.e. time series of climate conditions recorded over a long time period) has long been used in long-range streamflow forecasting. However, in the last decade, the use of general circulation model (GCM) outputs as input to hydrological models has developed. While precipitation climatology and historical streamflows offer reliable ensembles, forecasts based on GCM outputs can offer sharper ensembles, partly due to the initialisation of GCMs and hydrological models on current conditions. This study proposes to condition historical data based on GCM precipitation forecasts to get the most out of both data sources and improve seasonal streamflow forecasting in France. Four conditioning statistics based on ECMWF System 4 forecasts of cumulative precipitation and of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) were used to select traces within historical streamflows and historical precipitations. The four conditioned precipitation scenarios were used as input to the GR6J hydrological model to obtain eight conditioned streamflow forecast scenarios. These streamflow scenarios were compared to three references: an ensemble based on historical streamflows, the widespread Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP) ensemble, and System 4 precipitation forecasts. These ensembles were evaluated based on their sharpness, reliability and overall performance. An overall comparison of forecast ensembles showed that conditioning past observations based on the three-month Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI3) improved the sharpness of ensembles based on historical data, while maintaining a good reliability. An evaluation of forecast ensembles for low-flow forecasting showed that the SPI3-conditioned ensembles provided reliable forecasts of low-flow duration and deficit volume based on the 80th exceedance percentile. Last, drought risk forecasting was illustrated for the 2003 drought.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; A major part of renewable electricity production is characterized by a large degree of intermittency driven by the natural variability of climate factors such as air temperature, wind velocity, solar radiation, precipitation, evaporation, and river runoff. The main strategies to handle this intermittency include energy-storage, -transport, -diversity and -information. The three first strategies smooth out the variability of production in time and space, whereas the last one aims a better balance between production and demand. This study presents a literature review on the space-time variability of climate variables driving the intermittency of wind-, solar- and hydropower productions and their joint management in electricity systems. A vast body of studies pertains to this question bringing results covering the full spectrum of resolutions and extents, using a variety of data sources, but mostly dealing with a single source. Our synthesis highlights the consistency of these works, and, besides astronomic forcing, we identify three broad climatic regimes governing the variability of renewable production and load. At sub-daily time scales, the three considered renewables have drastically different pattern sizes in response to small scale atmospheric processes. At regional scales, large perturbation weather patterns consistently control wind and solar production, hydropower having a clearly distinct type of pattern. At continental scales, all renewable sources and load seem to display patterns of constant space characteristics and no indication of marked temporal trends.

Different kinds of buffer zonesexist: vegetated buffer zones, artificial wetlands, ditches, fascines, embankments and hedges.Processes and factors determining the buffer zone effectiveness to limit pesticides transfers aresumarized for the first three types of buffer zones. The available tools, guides and methods developedto optimize their implantation and sizing are presented. Buffer zones implementation on a catchmentarea is part of a more general approach. Although model comparison studies are very valuable for international cooperation, they do often not lead to very clear new insights regarding the relevance of the modelled processes. We hypothesise that this is partly caused by model complexity and the comparison methods used, which focus too much on a good overall performance instead of focusing on a variety of specific events. In this study, we use an approach that focuses on the evaluation of specific events and characteristics. Eight international research groups calibrated their hourly model on the Ourthe catchment in Belgium and carried out a validation in time for the Ourthe catchment and a validation in space for nested and neighbouring catchments. The same protocol was followed for each model and an ensemble of best-performing parameter sets was selected. Although the models showed similar performances based on general metrics (i.e. the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency), clear differences could be observed for specific events. We analysed the hydrographs of these specific events and conducted three types of statistical analyses on the entire time series: cumulative discharges, empirical extreme value distribution of the peak flows and flow duration curves for low flows. The results illustrate the relevance of including a very quick flow reservoir preceding the root zone storage to model peaks during low flows and including a slow reservoir in parallel with the fast reservoir to model the recession for the studied catchments. This intercomparison enhanced the understanding of the hydrological functioning of the catchment, in particular for low flows, and enabled to identify present knowledge gaps for other parts of the hydrograph. Above all, it helped to evaluate each model against a set of alternative models.

Abstract: Projected climate change by mid-21st century may have important impacts on water availability in France. The Explore 2070 prospective study, coordinated by the Ministry of Ecology, showed the necessity to quantify and anticipate these changes, and to build adaptation strategies to limit their negative consequences on hydrosystems and human activities. This article analyzes to which extent these works contributed to the awareness of water managers and to the reflection on adaptation to climate change in France.; Les changements climatiques projetés à l'horizon du milieu du XXIe siècle pourraient avoir des impacts importants sur la disponibilité en eau en France. L'étude prospective Explore 2070, pilotée par le ministère chargé de l'écologie, a ainsi mis en évidence la nécessité de quantifier et d'anticiper ces changements, et de construire des stratégies d'adaptation pour limiter leurs conséquences négatives sur les hydrosystèmes et les activités humaines. Abstract: International audience; Numerical modelling approaches can aid in designing geotechnical constructions involving geosynthetics. However, the reliability of numerical results depends on how the model is developed, the constitutive model, and the set of parameters used. By comparing the numerical results with experiment, the present work verifies a numerical modelling technique developed to model multilayered geosynthetic lining systems for landfills. The numerical modelling technique involves strain softening at interfaces and allows the axial stiffness of the geosynthetics to evolve as a function of strain. This work focuses on a two-dimensional finite-difference model, which is used to simulate three types of experimental tests: conventional uniaxial tensile tests, direct shear tests, and a large-scale test that was used to assess the overall mechanical behaviour of a reinforced geosynthetic system that spanned over a cavity. This reinforced geosynthetic system consisted of a 50 kN/m polyvinyl alcohol geogrid reinforcement embedded in a layer of sand, a geosynthetic clay liner, a high-density polyethylene geomembrane, and a non-woven needle-punched geotextile. The uniaxial tensile tests, direct shear tests, and the large-scale test were numerically modelled and the numerical results were compared with experimental results. The results of the numerical modelling technique presented very closely match the results of the three experimental tests, which indicates that the numerical model correctly predicted the measured data.

By directly applying numerical models of convective and conductive heat transfer to experimental data recorded as a function of depth and time, it is possible to calculate Darcy's velocity from the convection transfer term, thus allowing water infiltration/exfiltration through the soil to be determined as a function of time between fixed depths. In the present study we consider temperature data recorded at the Boissy-le-Châtel (Seine et Marne, France) experimental station between April 16th, 2009 and March 8th, 2010, at six different depths and 10-min time intervals. We make use of two numerical finite element models to solve the conduction/convection heat transfer equation and compare their merits. These two models allow us to calculate the corresponding convective flux rate every day using a group of three sensors. The comparison of the two series of calculated values centred at 24 cm shows reliable results for periods longer than 8 days. These results are transformed in infiltration/exfiltration value after determining the soil volumetric heat capacity. The comparison with the rainfall and evaporation data for periods of ten days shows a close accordance with the behaviour of the system governed by rainfall evaporation rate during winter and spring.

Abstract: International audience; Kinetic parameters (uptake from solution and elimination rate constants) of Cu, Ni and Pb bioaccumulation were determined from two Gammarus pulex and three Gammarus fossrum wild populations collected from reference sites throughout France in order to assess the inter-species and the natural inter-population variability of metal bioaccumulation kinetics in that sentinel organism. For that, each population was independently exposed for seven days to either 2.5 μg L−1 Cu (39.3 nM), 40 μg L−1 Ni (681 nM) or 10 μg L−1 Pb (48.3 nM) in laboratory controlled conditions, and then placed in unexposed microcosms for a 7-day depuration period. In the same way, the possible influence of metal exposure history on subsequent metal bioaccumulation kinetics was addressed by collecting wild gammarids from three populations inhabiting stations contaminated either by Cd, Pb or both Pb and Ni (named pre-exposed thereafter). In these pre-exposed organisms, assessment of any changes in metal bioaccumulation kinetics was achieved by comparison with the natural variability of kinetic parameters defined from reference populations. Results showed that in all studied populations (reference and pre-exposed) no significant Cu bioaccumulation was observed at the exposure concentration of 2.5 μg L−1. Concerning the reference populations, no significant differences in Ni and Pb bioaccumulation kinetics between the two species (G. pulex and G. fossarum) was observed allowing us to consider all the five reference populations to determine the inter-population natural variability, which was found to be relatively low (kinetic parameters determined for each population remained within a factor of 2 of the minimum and maximum values). Organisms from the population exhibiting a Pb exposure history presented reduced Ni uptake and elimination rate constants, whereas no influence on Ni kinetic parameters was observed in organisms from the population exhibiting an exposure history to both Ni and Pb. Furthermore Pb bioaccumulation kinetics were unaffected whatever the condition of pre-exposure in natural environment. Finally, these results highlight the complexity of confounding factors, such as metal exposure history, that influence metal bioaccumulation processes and showed that pre-exposure to one metal can cause changes in the bioaccumulation kinetics of other metals. These results also address the question of the underlying mechanisms developed by organisms to cope with metal contamination.

Abstract: [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; Low-flow simulation and forecasting remains a difficult issue for hydrological modellers, and intercomparisons can be extremely instructive for assessing existing lowflow prediction models and for developing more efficient operational tools. This research presents the results of a collaborative experiment conducted to compare low-flow simulation and forecasting models on 21 unregulated catchments in France. Five hydrological models (four lumped storagetype models - Gardenia, GR6J, Mordor and Presages - and one distributed physically oriented model - SIM) were applied within a common evaluation framework and assessed using a common set of criteria. Two simple benchmarks describing the average streamflow variability were used to set minimum levels of acceptability for model performance in simulation and forecasting modes. Results showed that, in simulation as well as in forecasting modes, all hydrological models performed almost systematically better than the benchmarks. Although no single model outperformed all the others for all catchments and criteria, a few models appeared to be more satisfactory than the others on average. In simulation mode, all attempts to relate model efficiency to catchment or streamflow characteristics remained inconclusive. In forecasting mode, we defined maximum useful forecasting lead times beyond which the model does not bring useful information compared to the benchmark. This maximum useful lead time logically varies between catchments, but also depends on the model used. Simple multi-model approaches that combine the outputs of the five hydrological models were tested to improve simulation and forecasting efficiency. Abstract: Snow is an important component of the water cycle, and its estimation in hydrological models is of great significance concerning the simulation and forecasting of flood events due to snow-melt. The assimilation of Snow Cover Area (SCA) in physical distributed hydrological models is a possible source of improvement of snowmelt-related floods. In this study, the assimilation in the LISFLOOD model of the MODIS sensor SCA has been evaluated, in order to improve the streamflow simulations of the model. This work is realized with the final scope of improving the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) pan-European flood forecasts in the future. For this purpose daily 500 m resolution MODIS satellite SCA data have been used. Tests were performed in the Morava basin, a tributary of the Danube, for three years. The particle filter method has been chosen for assimilating the MODIS SCA data with different frequencies. Synthetic experiments were first performed to validate the assimilation schemes, before assimilating MODIS SCA data. Results of the synthetic experiments could improve modelled SCA and discharges in all cases. The assimilation of MODIS SCA data with the particle filter shows a net improvement of SCA. The Nash of resulting discharge is consequently increased in many cases.

Abstract: International audience; Soil cracking has been studied for many decades; however, it still deserves further investigation. This paper describes a new testing device that uses image processing to perform simultaneous and continuous quantification of the vertical strain and radial strain, crack area, and water content of a soil specimen subjected to suction cycles imposed by the vapour equilibrium method. An image processing method was designed to determine the crack area and the soil radial strain separately. The evolution of each measured parameter over time in a clayey soil specimen subjected to 3 suction cycles is presented and discussed. The first suction cycle has the greatest impact on the crack area, the mass water content, the vertical strains and the radial strains. Hysteresis loops were observed for crack area and radial strain evolution.
