International audience; The first measurements of the polarized structure function σLT′ for the reaction p(e⃗ ,e′K+)Λ in the nucleon resonance region are reported. Measurements are included from threshold up to W=2.05 GeV for central values of Q2 of 0.65 and 1.00 GeV2, and nearly the entire kaon center-of-mass angular range. σLT′ is the imaginary part of the longitudinal-transverse response and is expected to be sensitive to interferences between competing intermediate s-channel resonances, as well as resonant and non-resonant processes. The results for σLT′ are comparable in magnitude to previously reported results from CLAS for σLT, the real part of the same response. An intriguing sign change in σLT′ is observed in the high Q2 data at W≈1.9 GeV. Comparisons to several existing model predictions are shown.

The spin structure functions g_1 for the proton and the deuteron have been measured over a wide kinematic range in x and Q2 using 1.6 and 5.7 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident upon polarized NH_3 and ND_3 targets at Jefferson Lab. Scattered electrons were detected in the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, for 0.05 < Q^2 < 5 GeV^2 and W < 3 GeV. The first moments of g_1 for the proton and deuteron are presented -- both have a negative slope at low Q^2, as predicted by the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule. The first result for the generalized forward spin polarizability of the proton gamma_0^p is also reported. This quantity shows strong Q^2 dependence at low Q^2, while Q^6\gamma_0^p seems to flatten out at the highest Q^2 accessed by our experiment. Although the first moments of g_1 are consistent with Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) calculations up to approximately Q^2 = 0.06 GeV^2, a significant discrepancy is observed between the \gamma_0^p data and ChPT for gamma_0^p, even at the lowest Q2., Comment: Final version as published in PLB. To be submitted to Phys Rev C, 15 pages, 18 figures; International audience; Electroproduction of exclusive $\phi$ vector mesons has been studied with the CLAS detector in the kinematical range $1.6\leq Q^2\leq 3.8$ GeV$^{2}$, $0.0\leq t^{\prime}\leq 3.6$ GeV$^{2}$, and $2.0\leq W\leq 3.0$ GeV. The scaling exponent for the total cross section as $1/(Q^2+M_{\phi}^2)^n$ was determined to be $n=2.49\pm 0.33$. The slope of the four-momentum transfer $t'$ distribution is $b_{\phi}=0.98 \pm 0.17$ GeV$^{-2}$. The data are consistent with the assumption of s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC). Under this assumption, we determine the ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross sections to be $R=0.86 \pm 0.24$. A 2-gluon exchange model is able to reproduce the main features of the data.

The exclusive electroproduction process $\vec{e}p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ was measured in the range of the photon virtuality $Q^2 = 1.7 - 4.5 \rm{GeV^2}$, and the invariant mass range for the $n\pi^+$ system of $W = 1.15 - 1.7 \rm{GeV}$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. For the first time, these kinematics are probed in exclusive $\pi^+$ production from protons with nearly full coverage in the azimuthal and polar angles of the $n\pi^+$ center-of-mass system. The $n\pi^+$ channel has particular sensitivity to the isospin 1/2 excited nucleon states, and together with the $p\pi^0$ final state will serve to determine the transition form factors of a large number of resonances. The largest discrepancy between these results and present modes was seen in the $\sigma_{LT'}$ structure function. In this experiment, 31,295 cross section and 4,184 asymmetry data points were measured. Because of the large volume of data, only a reduced set of structure functions and Legendre polynomial moments can be presented that are obtained in model-independent fits to the differential cross sections.

Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to K^{*0} \Sigma^+$ are presented at nine bins in photon energy in the range from 1.7 to 3.0 GeV. The \kstar was detected by its decay products, $K^+\pi^-$, in the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. These data are the first \kstar photoproduction cross sections ever published over a broad range of angles. Comparison with a theoretical model based on the vector and tensor $K^*$-quark couplings shows good agreement with the data in general, after adjusting the model's two parameters in a fit to our data. Disagreement between the data at forward angles and the global angle-energy fit to the model suggests that the role of scalar $\kappa$ meson exchange in $t$-channel diagrams should be investigated., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. The ep -> e'pi^+n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 0.65 GeV^2 range using the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time the absolute cross sections were measured covering nearly the full angular range in the hadronic center-of-mass frame. The structure functions sigma_TL, sigma_TT and the linear combination sigma_T+epsilon*sigma_L were extracted by fitting the phi-dependence of the measured cross sections, and were compared to the MAID and Sato-Lee models., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRC

The reaction $\gamma p \to pK^+K^-$ was studied at Jefferson Lab with photon energies from 1.8 to 3.8 GeV using a tagged photon beam. The goal was to search for a $\Theta^{++}$ pentaquark, a narrow doubly charged baryon state having strangeness S=+1 and isospin I=1, in the $pK^+$ invariant mass spectrum. No statistically significant evidence of a $\Theta^{++}$ was found. Upper limits on the total and differential production cross section for the reaction $\gamma p \to K^-\Theta^{++}$ were obtained in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.0 GeV/c$^2$, with an upper limit of about 0.15 nb, 95% C.L. for a narrow resonance with a mass $M_{\Theta^{++}}=1.54$ GeV/c$^2$. This result places a very stringent upper limit on the $\Theta^{++}$ width., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

PHASE; Inclusive electron scattering off the deuteron has been measured to extract the deuteron structure function F2 with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurement covers the entire resonance region from the quasielastic peak up to the invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W~=2.7 GeV with four-momentum transfers Q2 from 0.4 to 6 (GeV/c)2. These data are complementary to previous measurements of the proton structure function F2 and cover a similar two-dimensional region of Q2 and Bjorken variable x. Determination of the deuteron F2 over a large x interval including the quasielastic peak as a function of Q2, together with the other world data, permit a direct evaluation of the structure function moments for the first time. By fitting the Q2 evolution of these moments with an OPE-based twist expansion we have obtained a separation of the leading twist and higher twist terms. The observed Q2 behavior of the higher twist contribution suggests a partial cancelation of different higher twists entering into the expansion with opposite signs. This cancelation, found also in the proton moments, is a manifestation of the "duality" phenomenon in the F2 structure function.

We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering process via the e p -> e p gamma exclusive reaction at Q**2 = 1 GeV**2 in the nucleon resonance region. The cross section is obtained at center of mass (CM) backward angle, theta_gamma_gamma*, in a range of total (gamma* p) CM energy W from the proton mass up to W = 1.91 GeV. The data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions, and are well reproduced at higher W by the Bethe-Heitler+Born cross section, including t-channel pi0-exchange. At high W, our data, together with existing real photon data, show a striking Q**2 independence. We report a Virtual Compton Scattering study of the proton at low CM energies. We have determined the structure functions $P_{LL}-P_{TT}/\epsilon$ and $P_{LT}$, and the electric and magnetic Generalized Polarizabilities (GPs) $\alpha_E(Q2)$ and $\beta_M(Q2)$ at momentum transfer Q2= 0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong fall-off with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a fall-off; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from $\pi N$ intermediate states., Comment: 4 pages, 2 Figs. PHASE; International audience; Exclusive electroproduction of pi0 mesons on protons in the backward hemisphere has been studied at Q2=1.0 GeV2 by detecting protons in the forward direction in coincidence with scattered electrons from the 4 GeV electron beam in Jefferson Lab's Hall A. The data span the range of the total (gamma*p) center-of-mass energy W from the pion production threshold to W=2.0 GeV. The differential cross sections sigmaT+epsilonsigmaL, sigmaTL, and sigmaTT were separated from the azimuthal distribution and are presented together with the MAID and SAID parametrizations.

As part of a measurement of the cross section of $\phi$ meson photoproduction to high momentum transfer, we measured the polar angular decay distribution of the outgoing $K^+$ in the channel $\phi \to K^+K^-$ in the $\phi$ center-of-mass frame (the helicity frame). We find that s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) holds in the kinematical range where $t$-channel exchange dominates (up to $-t \sim 2.5$ GeV$^2$ for $E_{\gamma}$=3.6 GeV). Above this momentum, $u$-channel production of a $\phi$ meson dominates and induces a violation of SCHC. The deduced value of the $\phi NN$ coupling constant lies in the upper range of previously reported values., Comment: 6 pages; 5 figures

We have measured the proton recoil polarization in the He-4((e) over right arrow ,e('')(p) over right arrow)H-4 reaction at Q(2)=0.5, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.6 (GeV/c)(2). The measured ratio of polarization transfer coefficients differs from a fully relativistic calculation, favoring the inclusion of a medium modification of the proton form factors predicted by a quark-meson coupling model. In addition, the measured induced polarizations agree reasonably well with the fully relativistic calculation indicating that the treatment of final-state interactions is under control.

The cross section for $\phi$ meson photoproduction on the proton has been measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component, two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the $\phi$., Comment: 5 pages; 7 figures

he structure functions g1p and g1n have been measured over the range 0.014 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 GeV2 using deep-inelastic scattering of 48 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We find that the Q2 dependence of g1p (g1n) at fixed x is very similar to that of the spin-averaged structure function F1p (F1n). From a NLO QCD fit to all available data we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n =0.176 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.007$ at Q2=5 GeV2, in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction of 0.182 \pm 0.005.

Media temporalities of the elderly : evolutions in stability This article shows the context of analysis and the first results of a research on media temporalities of the elderly. Several works have finely analysed the diversity of the media practices and studied meanings of media uses. I wish to continue these analyses by insisting on the evolutionary and dynamic aspect of the practices and temporalities of users having expanded, enhanced, so called "interactive" radio and especially television programming. A priori, the elderly, upon retirement, have a "full-time free time". Their media practices seem strongly influenced by their first experiments ; the appropriation of the various peripheral accessories which gradually came with the media, to the latest digital ones, seems to reinforce their habits of watching television. Their representations and relations with times and media are very far away from the image of television like omnipresent media or "devourer of time". Rather, their media practices are to be understood like a temporality of the occupation, according to the expression of Gerard Derèze, characterized by interest and utility. A particular glance at the users who do not carry out a systematic selection of the programs, accepting the unforeseen, highlights an approach of media and time that allow "useful encounter" which I would qualify in a first stage by : "chance and encounter" and "random and the following". The few points presented here make me assume that the global relation of the autonomous elderly persons to the media can evolve when confronted to their new temporal framework and the new program offer, whereas their representations and use of the media remain quite stable.

New measurements are reported on the deuteron spin structure function g_1^d. These results were obtained from deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV electrons on polarized deuterons in the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q^2 < 40 (GeV/c)^2. These are the first high dose electron scattering data obtained using lithium deuteride (6Li2H) as the target material. Extrapolations of the data were performed to obtain moments of g_1^d, including Gamma_1^d, and the net quark polarization Delta Sigma.

Astrophysics::High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,[PHYS.HEXP]Physics [physics]/High Energy Physics - Experiment [hep-ex] ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We discuss the experimental issues confronting measurements of the Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) reaction ep->ep gamma with electron beam energies 6-30 GeV. We specifically address the kinematics of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (Deep Inelastic Scattering, with coincident detection of the exclusive real photon nearly parallel to the virtual photon direction) and large transverse momentum VCS (High energy VCS of arbitrary Q**2, and the recoil proton emitted with high momentum transverse to the virtual photon direction). We discuss the experimental equipment necessary for these measurements. For the DVCS, we emphasize the importance of the Bethe-Heitler-Compton interference terms that can be measured with the electron-positron (beam charge) asymmetry, and the electron beam helicity asymmetry.
