Radiation-induced embrittlement of nuclear steels is one of the main limiting factors for safe long-term operation of nuclear power plants. In support of accurate and safe reactor pressure vessel (RPV) lifetime assessments, we developed a physics-based model that predicts RPV steel hardening and subsequent embrittlement as a consequence of the formation of nano-sized clusters of minor alloying elements. This model is shown to provide reliable assessments of embrittlement for a very wide range of materials, with higher accuracy than industrial correlations. The core of our model is a multiscale modelling tool that predicts the kinetics of solute clustering, given the steel chemical composition and its irradiation conditions. It is based on the observation that the formation of solute clusters ensues from atomic transport driven by radiation-induced mechanisms, differently from classical nucleation-and-growth theories. We then show that the predicted information about solute clustering can be translated into a reliable estimate for radiation-induced embrittlement, via standard hardening laws based on the dispersed barrier model. We demonstrate the validity of our approach by applying it to hundreds of nuclear reactors vessels from all over the world., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

The formation of nano-sized, coherent, solute-rich clusters (NSRC) is known to be an important factor degrading the macroscopic properties of steels under irradiation. The mechanisms driving their formation are still debated. This work focuses on low-Cu reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels, where solute species are generally not expected to precipitate. We rationalize the processes taking place at the nanometre scale under irradiation, relying on the latest theoretical and experimental evidence on atomic-level diffusion and transport processes. These are compiled in a new model, based on the object kinetic Monte Carlo (OKMC) technique. We evaluate the relevance of the underlying physical assumptions by applying the model to a large variety of irradiation experiments. Our model predictions are compared with new experimental data obtained with atom probe tomography and small angle neutron scattering, complemented with information from the literature. The results of this study reveal that the role of immobilized self-interstitial atoms (SIA) loops dominates the nucleation process of NSRC.

In this paper, we consider the group Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$ of order-automorphisms of the rational numbers, proving a result analogous to a theorem of Galvin's for the symmetric group. In an announcement, Kh\'elif states that every countable subset of Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$ is contained in an $N$-generated subgroup of Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$ for some fixed $N\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that the least such $N$ is $2$. Moreover, for every countable subset of Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$, we show that every element can be given as a prescribed product of two generators without using their inverses. More precisely, suppose that $a$ and $b$ freely generate the free semigroup $\{a,b\}^+$ consisting of the non-empty words over $a$ and $b$. Then we show that there exists a sequence of words $w_1, w_2,\ldots$ over $\{a,b\}$ such that for every sequence $f_1, f_2, \ldots\in\,$Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$ there is a homomorphism $\phi:\{a,b\}^{+}\to$ Aut$(\mathbb{Q},\leq)$ where $(w_i)\phi=f_i$ for every $i$. As a corollary to the main theorem in this paper, we obtain a result of Droste and Holland showing that the strong cofinality of Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$ is uncountable, or equivalently that Aut$(\mathbb{Q}, \leq)$ has uncountable cofinality and Bergman's property., Comment: Updated to clarify some parts of the proof

We provide fits to the distribution of galaxy luminosity, size, velocity dispersion and stellar mass as a function of concentration index C_r and morphological type in the SDSS. We also quantify how estimates of the fraction of `early' or `late' type galaxies depend on whether the samples were cut in color, concentration or light profile shape, and compare with similar estimates based on morphology. Our fits show that Es account for about 20% of the r-band luminosity density, rho_Lr, and 25% of the stellar mass density, rho_*; including S0s and Sas increases these numbers to 33% and 40%, and 50% and 60%, respectively. Summed over all galaxy types, we find rho_* ~ 3 * 10^8 M_Sun Mpc^{-3} at z ~ 0. This is in good agreement with expectations based on integrating the star formation history. However, compared to most previous work, we find an excess of objects at large masses, up to a factor of ~ 10 at M_* ~ 5*10^{11} M_Sun. The stellar mass density further increases at large masses if we assume different IMFs for Es and spiral galaxies, as suggested by some recent chemical evolution models, and results in a better agreement with the dynamical mass function. We also show that the trend for ellipticity to decrease with luminosity is primarily because the E/S0 ratio increases at large L. However, the most massive galaxies, M_* > 5 * 10^{11} M_Sun, are less concentrated and not as round as expected if one extrapolates from lower L, and they are not well-fit by pure deVaucouleur laws. This suggests formation histories with recent radial mergers. Finally, we show that the age-size relation is flat for Es of fixed dynamical mass, but, at fixed M_dyn, S0s and Sas with large sizes tend to be younger. We select a sample of about 50,000 early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), calibrate fitting formulae which correct for known problems with photometric reductions of extended objects, apply these corrections, and then measure a number of pairwise scaling relations in the corrected sample. We show that, because they are not seeing corrected, the use of Petrosian-based quantities in magnitude limited surveys leads to biases, and suggest that this is one reason why Petrosian-based analyses of BCGs have failed to find significant differences from the bulk of the early-type population. These biases are not present when seeing-corrected parameters derived from deVaucouleur fits are used. Most of the scaling relations we study show evidence for curvature: the most luminous galaxies have smaller velocity dispersions, larger sizes, and fainter surface brightnesses than expected if there were no curva-ture. These statements remain true if we replace luminosities with stellar masses; they suggest that dissipation is less important at the massive end. There is curvature in the dynamical to stellar mass relation as well: the ratio of dynamical to stellar mass increases as stellar mass increases, but it curves upwards from this scaling both at small and large stellar masses. In all cases, the curvature at low masses becomes apparent when the sample becomes dominated by objects with stellar masses smaller than 3 x 10^10 M_Sun. From a sample of ~50000 early-type galaxies from the SDSS, we measured the traditional Fundamental Plane in four bands. We then replaced luminosity with stellar mass, and measured the "stellar mass" FP. The FP steepens slightly as one moves from shorter to longer wavelengths: the orthogonal fit has slope 1.40 in g and 1.47 in z. The FP is thinner at longer wavelengths: scatter is 0.062 dex in g, 0.054 dex in z. The scatter is larger at small galaxy sizes/masses; at large masses measurement errors account for essentially all of the observed scatter. The FP steepens further when luminosity is replaced with stellar mass, to slope ~ 1.6. The intrinsic scatter also reduces further, to 0.048 dex. Since color and stellar mass-to-light ratio are closely related, this explains why color can be thought of as the fourth FP parameter. However, the slope of the stellar mass FP remains shallower than the value of 2 associated with the virial theorem. This is because the ratio of dynamical to stellar mass increases at large masses as M_d^0.17. The face-on view of the stellar mass kappa-space suggests that there is an upper limit to the stellar density for a given dynamical mass, and this decreases at large masses: M_*/R_e^3 ~ M_d^-4/3. We also study how the estimated coefficients a and b of the FP are affected by other selection effects (e.g. excluding small sigma biases a high; excluding fainter L biases a low). These biases are seen in FPs which have no intrinsic curvature, so the observation that a and b scale with L and sigma is not, by itself, evidence that the Plane is warped. We show that the FP appears to curve sharply downwards at the small mass end, and more gradually downwards towards larger masses. We used the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain high resolution i-band images of the centers of 23 single galaxies, which were selected because they have SDSS velocity dispersions larger than 350 km/s. The surface brightness profiles of the most luminous of these objects (M_i<-24) have well-resolved `cores' on scales of 150-1000 pc, and share similar properties to BCGs. The total luminosity of the galaxy is a better predictor of the core size than is the velocity dispersion. The correlations of luminosity and velocity dispersion with core size agree with those seen in previous studies of galaxy cores. Because of high velocity dispersions, our sample of galaxies can be expected to harbor the most massive black holes, and thus have large cores with large amounts of mass ejection. The mass-deficits inferred from core-Sersic fits to the surface-brightness profiles are approximately double the black-hole masses inferred from the M_bh-sigma relation and the same as those inferred from the M_bh-L relation. The less luminous galaxies (M_i>-23) tend to have steeper `power-law' inner profiles, higher-ellipticity, diskier isophotes, and bulge-to-total ratios of order 0.5 -- all of which suggest that they are `fast-rotators' and rotational motions could have contaminated the velocity dispersion estimate. We study a sample of 43 early-type galaxies, selected from the SDSS because they appeared to have velocity dispersion > 350 km/s. High-resolution photometry in the SDSS i passband using HRC-ACS on board the HST shows that just less than half of the sample is made up of superpositions of two or three galaxies, so the reported velocity dispersion is incorrect. The other half of the sample is made up of single objects with genuinely large velocity dispersions. None of these objects has sigma larger than 426 +- 30 km/s. These objects define rather different relations than the bulk of the early-type galaxy population: for their luminosities, they are the smallest, most massive and densest galaxies in the Universe. Although the slopes of the scaling relations they define are rather different from those of the bulk of the population, they lie approximately parallel to those of the bulk "at fixed sigma". These objects appear to be of two distinct types: the less luminous (M_r>-23) objects are rather flattened and extremely dense for their luminosities -- their properties suggest some amount of rotational support and merger histories with abnormally large amounts of gaseous dissipation. The more luminous objects (M_r<-23) tend to be round and to lie in or at the centers of clusters. Their properties are consistent with the hypothesis that they are BCGs. Models in which BCGs form from predominantly radial mergers having little angular momentum predict that they should be prolate. If viewed along the major axis, such objects would appear to have abnormally large sigma for their sizes, and to be abnormally round for their luminosities. This is true of the objects in our sample once we account for the fact that the most luminous galaxies (M_r<-23.5), and BCGs, become slightly less round with increasing luminosity., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) observations for galaxies at redshift z < 0.3 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) showing large velocity dispersions while appearing to be single galaxies in HST images. The high signal-to-noise HET spectra provide more definitive velocity dispersions. The maximum velocity dispersion we find is 444 km/s. Emission-line widths in QSOs indicate that black holes can exist with masses exceeding 5 billion solar masses, implying velocity dispersions greater than 500 km/s by the local black hole mass - velocity dispersion relationship. This suggests either that QSO black hole masses are overestimated or that the black hole - bulge relationship changes at high black hole mass. The latter option is consistent with evidence that the increase in velocity dispersion with luminosity levels off for the brightest elliptical galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ

It is common to estimate black hole abundances by using a measured correlation between black hole mass and another more easily measured observable such as the velocity dispersion or luminosity of the surrounding bulge. The correlation is used to transform the distribution of the observable into an estimate of the distribution of black hole masses. However, different observables provide different estimates: the Mbh-sigma relation predicts fewer massive black holes than does the Mbh-L relation. This is because the sigma-L relation in black hole samples currently available is inconsistent with that in the SDSS sample, from which the distributions of L or sigma are based: the black hole samples have smaller L for a given sigma or have larger sigma for a given L. This is true whether L is estimated in the optical or in the NIR. If this is a selection rather than physical effect, then the Mbh-sigma and Mbh-L relations currently in the literature are also biased from their true values. We provide a framework for describing the effect of this bias. We then combine it with a model of the bias to make an estimate of the true intrinsic relations. While we do not claim to have understood the source of the bias, our simple model is able to reproduce the observed trends. If we have correctly modeled the selection effect, then our analysis suggests that the bias in the relation is likely to be small, whereas the relation is biased towards predicting more massive black holes for a given luminosity. In addition, it is likely that the Mbh-L relation is entirely a consequence of more fundamental relations between Mbh and sigma, and between sigma and L. The intrinsic relation we find suggests that at fixed luminosity, older galaxies tend to host more massive black holes., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by ApJ. Black hole masses are tightly correlated with the stellar velocity dispersions of the bulges which surround them, and slightly less-well correlated with the bulge luminosity. It is common to use these correlations to estimate the expected abundance of massive black holes. This is usually done by starting from an observed distribution of velocity dispersions or luminosities and then changing variables. This procedure neglects the fact that there is intrinsic scatter in these black hole mass--observable correlations. Accounting for this scatter results in estimates of black hole abundances which are larger by almost an order of magnitude at masses >10^9 M_sun. Including this scatter is particularly important for models which seek to infer quasar lifetimes and duty cycles from the local black hole mass function. However, even when scatter has been accounted for, the M_bh-sigma relation predicts fewer massive black holes than does the M_bh-L relation. This is because the sigma-L relation in the black hole samples currently available is inconsistent with that in the SDSS sample from which the distributions of L or sigma are based: the black hole samples have smaller L for a given sigma, or larger sigma for a given L. The sigma-L relation in the black hole samples is similarly discrepant with that in other samples of nearby early-type galaxies. This suggests that current black hole samples are biased: if this is a selection rather than physical effect, then the M_bh-sigma and M_bh-L relations currently in the literature are also biased from their true values., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. The size-luminosity relation of early-type Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), R_e ~ L^0.88, is steeper than that for the bulk of the early-type galaxy population, for which R_e ~ L^0.68. In addition, although BCGs are hardly offset from the Fundamental Plane defined by the bulk of the early-type population, they show considerably smaller scatter. The larger than expected sizes of BCGs, and the increased homogeneity, are qualitatively consistent with models which seek to explain the colors of the most massive galaxies by invoking dry dissipationless mergers, since dissipation tends to reduce the sizes of galaxies, and wet mergers which result in star formation would tend to increase the scatter in luminosity at fixed size and velocity dispersion. Furthermore, BCGs define the same g-r color-magnitude relation as the bulk of the early-type population. If BCGs formed from dry mergers, then BCG progenitors must have been red for their magnitudes, suggesting that they hosted older stellar populations than typical for their luminosities. Our findings have two other consequences. First, the R_e-L relation of the early-type galaxy population as a whole (i.e., normal plus BCG) exhibits some curvature. Some of this curvature must be a consequence of the fact that an increasing fraction of the most luminous galaxies are BCGs. The second consequence is suggested by the fact that, despite following a steeper size-luminosity relation, BCGs tend to define a tight relation between dynamical mass R_e sigma^2/G and luminosity. Numerical evaluation of a Whipple shield has yielded a ballistic model for cylindrical projectiles. A numerical model of a Whipple shield covered with a thermal-blanket that is representative of operational shields has been developed using CTH: The shield model has been evaluated against existing test data; The projectile model has been developed from preexisting models for graphite-epoxy materials. The model has been used to identify projectile characteristics at the ballistic limit for spherical and cylindrical projectiles; Considered normal impacts of the shield at 7 kilometers per second; Varied the angle between the axis-of-symmetry and velocity vector; Varied the length to the diameter ratio over a broad range. The results have been consolidated into a generalized model that can be adapted to existing spherical models

A well-known hazard associated with exposure to the space environment is the risk of vehicle failure due to an impact from an micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) particle. Among the vehicles of importance to NASA is the extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) “spacesuit” used while performing a US extravehicular activity (EVA). An EMU impact is of great concern as a large leak could prevent an astronaut from safely reaching the airlock in time resulting in a loss of life. For this reason, a risk assessment is provided to the EVA office at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) prior to certification of readiness for each US EVA. To assess the risk of failure, a detailed finite element model (FEM) of the EMU has been created which has regions for the various shielding configurations. Each shielding configuration is based on the layers and materials over the innermost bladder layer that maintains the acceptable atmospheric environment for the astronaut. Ballistic limit equations (BLE) for each shielding configuration have been determined from hypervelocity impact testing of samples of the EMU layup.

The multipurpose crew vehicle, Orion, is being designed and built for NASA to handle the rigors of crew launch, sustainment and return from scientific missions beyond Earth orbit. In this role, the Orion vehicle is meant to operate in the space environments like the naturally occurring meteoroid and the artificial orbital debris environments (MMOD) with successful atmospheric reentry at the conclusion of the flight. As a result, Orion's reentry module uses durable porous, ceramic tiles on almost thirty square meters of exposed surfaces to accomplish both of these functions. These durable, non-ablative surfaces maintain their surface profile through atmospheric reentry; thus, they preserve any surface imperfections that occur prior to atmospheric reentry. Furthermore, Orion's launch abort system includes a shroud that protects the thermal protection system while awaiting launch and during ascent. The combination of these design features and a careful pre-flight inspection to identify any manufacturing imperfections results in a high confidence that damage to the thermal protection system identified post-flight is due to the in-flight solid particle environments. These favorable design features of Orion along with the unique flight profile of the first exploration flight test of Orion (EFT-1) have yielded solid particle environment measurements that have never been obtained before this flight.

Since February 2001, the Hypervelocity Impact Technology (HVIT) group at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston has performed 35 post-flight inspections on space exposed hardware returned from the International Space Station (ISS). Data on 1,188 observations of micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) damage have been collected from these inspections. Survey documentation typically includes impact feature location and size measurements as well as microscopic photography (25-200x). Sampling of impacts sites for projectile residue was performed for the largest features. Results of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis to discern impactor source are included in the database when available. This paper will focus on two inspections, the Pressurized Mating Adapter 2 (PMA-2) cover returned in 2015 after 1.6 years exposure with 26 observed impact features, and two Airlock shield panels returned in 2010 after 8.75 years exposure with 58 MMOD impacts. Feature sizes from the observed data are compared to predictions using the Bumper 3 risk assessment code.

The Bumper 3 computer code is the primary tool used by NASA for micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) risk analysis. Bumper 3 (and its predecessors) have been used to analyze a variety of manned and unmanned spacecraft. The code uses NASA's latest micrometeoroid (MEM-R2) and orbital debris (ORDEM 3.0) environment definition models and is updated frequently with ballistic limit equations that describe the hypervelocity impact performance of spacecraft materials. The Bumper 3 program uses these inputs along with a finite element representation of spacecraft geometry to provide a deterministic calculation of the expected number of failures. The Bumper 3 software is configuration controlled by the NASA/JSC Hypervelocity Impact Technology (HVIT) Group. This paper will demonstrate MMOD risk assessment techniques with Bumper 3 used by NASA's HVIT Group. The Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) was added to the International Space Station in 2011. A Bumper 3 MMOD risk assessment of this module will show techniques used to create the input model and assign the property IDs. The methodology used to optimize the MMOD shielding for minimum mass while still meeting structural penetration requirements will also be demonstrated.
