How much do we know about the historic relationship between the corporations that develop menstrual technologies and consumers? This case study adds to the growing literature on users of gendered technology, examining consumers' role in Unilever's ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful tampon project in the 1970s. Investigating the creation of the absorbent material Lyogel, Unilever's menstrual data collection, and the accompanying "7-Day War" marketing campaign, I demonstrate the link between technology, corporations, and consumers. Anonymous consumers gave Unilever information about their menstrual habits. This provided insight into the lived experience of menstruation and knowledge of menstrual technologies in an era when talking about this topic was taboo.

Floral colour is an important agronomic trait that influences the commercial value of ornamental plants. Anthocyanins are a class of flavonoids and confer diverse colours, and elucidating the molecular mechanisms that regulate their pigmentation could facilitate artificial manipulation of flower colour in ornamental plants. Here, we investigated the regulatory mechanism of light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis during flower colouration in grape hyacinth (Muscari spp.). We studied the function of two B-box proteins, MaBBX20 and MaBBX51. The qPCR revealed that MaBBX20 and MaBBX51 were associated with light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis. Both MaBBX20 and MaBBX51 are transcript factors and are specifically localised in the nucleus. Besides, overexpression of MaBBX20 in tobacco slightly increased the anthocyanin content of the petals, but reduced in MaBBX51 overexpression lines. The yeast one-hybrid assays indicated that MaBBX20 and MaBBX51 did not directly bind to the MaMybA or MaDFR promoters, but MaHY5 did. The BiFC assay revealed that MaBBX20 and MaBBX51 physically interact with MaHY5. A dual luciferase assay further confirmed that the MaBBX20–MaHY5 complex can strongly activate the MaMybA and MaDFR transcription in tobacco. Moreover, MaBBX51 hampered MaBBX20–MaHY5 complex formation and repressed MaMybA and MaDFR transcription by physically interacting with MaHY5 and MaBBX20. Overall, the results suggest that MaBBX20 positively regulates light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in grape hyacinth, whereas MaBBX51 is a negative regulator.

The transcriptional and posttranscriptional AGO-mediated control of gene expression may play important roles during male monocot gametophyte development. In this report, we demonstrated dynamic changes in the spatiotemporal distribution of AGO1 and AGO4, which are key proteins of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) in Hyacinthus orientalis male gametophyte development. During maturation of the bicellular pollen grains and in vitro pollen tube growth, the pattern of AGO1 localization was correlated with previously observed transcriptional activity of the cells. During the period of high transcriptional activity, AGO1 is associated with chromatin while the clustered distribution of AGO1 in the interchromatin areas is accompanied by condensation of chromatin and the gradual transcriptional silencing of both cells in mature, dehydrated pollen. During pollen tube growth and the restarting of RNA synthesis in the vegetative nucleus, AGO1 is dispersed in the chromatin. Additionally, the gradual increase in the cytoplasmic pool of AGO1 in the elongating pollen tube indicates the activation of the posttranscriptional gene silencing (PTGS) pathway. During pollen tube growth in the generative cell and in the sperm cells, AGO1 is present mainly in the areas between highly condensed chromatin clusters. Changes in the distribution of AGO4 that indicated the possibility of spatiotemporal organization in the RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) process (cytoplasmic and nuclear steps) were also observed during hyacinth male gametophyte development. Based on our findings, we propose that in the germinating pollen tube, the cytoplasmic assembly of AGO4/siRNA takes place and that the mature complexes could be transported to the nucleus to carry out their function during the next steps of pollen tube growth.

Studies on the breeding of vulnerable and endangered bird species are hindered by low numbers of individuals, inaccessible location of nests, unfavourable environmental conditions, and complex behavioural patterns. In addition, intraspecific variation may emerge only following long-term, systematic observations of little-known patterns and processes. Here, data collected over 30 years were used to determine growth model of hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) chicks in the Pantanal biome of Brazil. During this period, the speed of growth and body mass of chicks varied widely. Four growth models were tested: logistic, Gompertz, Richards, and cubic polynomial. They were fitted using three biometric measurements: body mass, total length, and tail length. The best-fitting growth curves were identified using Akaike’s information criterion. The best models were the cubic polynomial for body mass, Richards for total length, and Gompertz for tail length. We confirmed the occurrence of dwarf individuals, whose body mass, total length, and tail length were 20%, 22%, and 70% smaller, respectively, than in the overall population. The dwarfs remain small in size after having fledged and are easily identified as adults. We discuss the importance of long-term studies to identify windows of opportunity for further research that will help in the conservation of endangered macaw species.

Human activities beyond ecosystem capacity have resulted in serious effects on corals worldwide. Nowadays, many studies have focused on the influence of diving activities on coral communities, while the knowledge of physiological changes under corresponding environmental stresses remains largely undetermined. In the study, we aimed to investigate the physiological effects of touching, ammonia nitrogen enrichment (5 μmol⋅L–1), and sediment cover (particle size of less than 0.3 mm), which simulated improper self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) diving behaviors, on Acropora hyacinthus and Porites cylindrica in Wuzhizhou Island, the South China Sea. For A. hyacinthus, continuous touching caused the tentacles to shrink and secrete mucus, which consumed energy and dissolved oxygen. The skeletal growth rate was decreased by 72% compared with the control group. There was a rapid decline of Fv/Fm and alpha under the dual impacts of high ammonia nitrogen and touching, while the Chl a concentration and tissue biomass were decreased by 36 and 28% compared with touching alone, respectively. High ammonia nitrogen and touching increased the concentrations of lipid and protein. Nevertheless, zooxanthellae density was increased by 23% to relieve the effects of a lower concentration of Chl a in a high nutrient environment. Constant touching and sediment cover in diving areas with elevated ammonia content affected the photosynthesis and respiration of corals, and a significant decrease was observed for lipid, zooxanthellae density, and Chl a concentration. Coral bleaching occurred on day 7. For P. cylindrica, the decreasing magnitude of Fv/Fm and alpha under different stresses in the subsequent phase was less compared with A. hyacinthus. The contents of carbohydrate and protein under continuous touching were decreased by 7 and 15% compared with the control group, respectively, causing negative growth. Under the dual influences of high ammonia nitrogen and continuous touching, all energy reserves were significantly lower. Repeated touching and sediment cover in diving areas containing high ammonia content increased the concentrations of lipid and protein compared with the touching and high nutrient treatment group likely because that Porites associated with C15 zooxanthella increased heterotrophic feeding to compensate for restricted symbiodiniaceae photosynthesis. Additionally, P. cylindrica produced mucus to aid the removal of sediment, so that corals didn’t obviously bleach during the experiment. Collectively, P. cylindrica was more resistant to diving activities than A. hyacinthus which only relies on photoautotrophy. To ensure the sustainable development of coral reef dive tourism, it is necessary to strengthen the supervision of diving behaviors, rotate the diving areas, and conduct regular assessments on the coral status.

Widespread mapping of coral thermal resilience is essential for developing effective management strategies and requires replicable and rapid multi-location assays of heat resistance and recovery. One- or two-day short-term heat stress experiments have been previously employed to assess heat resistance, followed by single assays of bleaching condition. We tested the reliability of short-term heat stress resistance, and linked resistance and recovery assays, by monitoring the phenotypic response of fragments from 101 Acropora hyacinthus colonies located in Palau (Micronesia) to short-term heat stress. Following short-term heat stress, bleaching and mortality were recorded after 16 hours, daily for seven days, and after one and two months of recovery. To follow corals over time, we utilized a qualitative, non-destructive visual bleaching score metric that correlated with standard symbiont retention assays. The bleaching state of coral fragments 16 hours post-heat stress was highly indicative of their state over the next 7 days, suggesting that symbiont population sizes within corals may quickly stabilize post-heat stress. Bleaching 16 hours post-heat stress predicted likelihood of mortality over the subsequent 3–5 days, after which there was little additional mortality. Together, bleaching and mortality suggested that rapid assays of the phenotypic response following short-term heat stress were good metrics of the total heat treatment effect. Additionally, our data confirm geographic patterns of intraspecific variation in Palau and show that bleaching severity among colonies was highly correlated with mortality over the first week post-stress. We found high survival (98%) and visible recovery (100%) two months after heat stress among coral fragments that survived the first week post-stress. These findings help simplify rapid, widespread surveys of heat sensitivity in Acropora hyacinthus by showing that standardized short-term experiments can be confidently assayed after 16 hours, and that bleaching sensitivity may be linked to subsequent survival using experimental assessments.

Bowman–Birk inhibitors (BBIs) are plant-derived serine proteinase inhibitors. Endogenously, they function as defense molecules against pathogens and insects, but they also have been explored for applications in cancer treatment and inflammatory disorders. Here, we isolated 15 novel BBIs from the bulb of Hyacinthus orientalis (termed HOSPIs). These isoinhibitors consisted of two or three chains, respectively, that are linked by disulfides bonds based on proposed cleavage sites in the canonical BBI reactive site loop. They strongly inhibited trypsin (Ki = 0.22–167 nM) and α-chymotrypsin (Ki = 19–1200 nM). Notably, HOSPI-B4 contains a six-residue reactive loop, which appears to be the smallest such motif discovered in BBIs to date. HOSPI-A6 and -A7 contain an unusual reactive site, i.e. Leu–Met at the P1–P1′ position and have strong inhibitory activity against trypsin, α-chymotrypsin, and elastase. Analysis of the cDNA encoding HOSPIs revealed that the precursors have HOSPI-like domains repeated at least twice with a defined linker sequence connecting individual domains. Lastly, mutational analysis of HOSPIs suggested that the linker sequence does not affect the inhibitory activity, and a Thr residue at the P2 site and a Pro at the P3′ site are crucial for elastase inhibition. Using mammalian proteases as representative model system, we gain novel insight into the sequence diversity and proteolytic activity of plant BBI. These results may aid the rational design of BBI peptides with potent and distinct inhibitory activity against human, pathogen, or insect serine proteinases.

A novel composite foam was prepared from native cassava starch and water hyacinth (WH) by baking in a hot mold. The effects of WH powder content (0, 3, 5, 7 or 10 wt%, dry starch basis) on the properties of the starch foam were investigated. A starch foam formulation with 5 wt% WH powder exhibited the highest flexural stress at maximum load (3.42 MPa), the highest flexural strain (extension) at maximum load (3.52%), the highest modulus (232.00 MPa), the lowest moisture content (6.77%) and the most uniform cell size distribution (0.44 ± 0.09 mm). Moreover, mechanical properties of starch foam with 5 wt% WH powder were better than the same properties of some commercial foams. After being coated with beeswax, the starch foams retained their shape after immersion in distilled water and their water solubility was significantly reduced. Results indicated that a starch foam/5 wt% WH composite with beeswax coating was a biodegradable foam that could possibly replace commercial non-degradable foam.

International audience; The bacterial plant pathogen Xanthomonas hyacinthi is the causal agent of yellow disease of Hyacinthus and other ornamental plant genera. There is no available complete genome for X. hyacinthi, limiting basic research for this pathogen. Here, we release a high-quality complete genome sequence for the X. hyacinthi type strain, CFBP 1156. Single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing with a mean coverage of 306× revealed two contigs of 4,918,645 and 44,381 bp in size. This was the first characterized plant-disease-causing species of Xanthomonas and this genome provides a resource to better understand the biology of yellow disease of hyacinth.

Abstract The criticality hypothesis states that a system may be poised in a critical state at the boundary between different types of dynamics. Previous studies have suggested that criticality has been evolutionarily selected, and examples have been found in cortical cell cultures and in the human nervous system. However, no one has yet reported a single- or multi-cell ensemble that was investigated ex vivo and found to be in the critical state. Here, the precise 1/f noise was found for pollen tube cells of optimum growth and for the physiological (“healthy”) state of blood cells. We show that the multi-scale processes that arise from the so-called critical phenomena can be a fundamental property of a living cell. Our results reveal that cell life is conducted at the border between order and disorder, and that the dynamics themselves drive a system towards a critical state. Moreover, a temperature-driven re-entrant state transition, manifest in the form of a Lorentz resonance, was found in the fluctuation amplitude of the extracellular ionic fluxes for the ensemble of elongating pollen tubes of Nicotiana tabacum L. or Hyacintus orientalis L. Since this system is fine-tuned for rapid expansion to reach the ovule at a critical temperature which results in fertilisation, the core nature of criticality (long-range coherence) offers an explanation for its potential in cell growth. We suggest that the autonomous organisation of expansive growth is accomplished by self-organised criticality, which is an orchestrated instability that occurs in an evolving cell. Graphic abstract

Coral embryos are a critical and sensitive period for the early growth and development of coral. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) is widely distributed in the ocean and has strong toxicity, but there is little information on the toxic effects to coral embryos exposed to this widespread environmental contaminant. Thus, in this study, we utilized the Illumina Hiseq™ 4000 platform to explore the gene response of Acropora hyacinthus embryos under the BaP stress. A total of 130,042 Unigenes were obtained and analyzed, and approximately 37.67% of those matched with sequences from four different species. In total, 2606 Unigenes were up-regulated, and 3872 Unigenes were down-regulated. After Gene Ontology (GO) annotation, the results show that the "cellular process" and "metabolic process" were leading in the category of biological processes, which the "binding" and "catalytic activity" were the most abundant subcategories in molecular function. Based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, the most differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched, as well as down-regulated in the pathways of oxidative phosphorylation, metabolism of xenobiotics, immune-related genes, apoptosis and human disease genes. At the same time, 388,197 of Single-nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and 6164 of Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs) were obtained, which can be served as the richer and more valuable SSRs molecular markers in the future. The results of this study can help to better understand the toxicological mechanism of coral embryo exposed to BaP, and it is also essential for the protection and restoration of coral reef ecosystem in the future.

Coral growth anomalies (GAs) are chronic diseases that adversely affect organism health and fitness. We investigated immunity and fecundity within and among GA-affected and visually healthy control colonies of the reef-building coral Acropora hyacinthus. Compared to controls, GAs had higher activity of the key immunity enzyme phenoloxidase (PO), suggesting a localised immune response within the GA. Both GAs and healthy tissue of GA-affected colonies had significantly greater total potential PO (tpPO)-PO activity inclusive of the activated latent PO, prophenoloxidase - than control colonies. Higher tpPO activity in GA-affected corals suggests elevated constitutive immunity compared to visually healthy controls. Additionally, fewer GA-affected colonies produced gametes, fewer polyps had oocytes (p < 0.001) and the number of oocytes per polyp was lower. Therefore, GAs in A. hyacinthus might induce, or represent a shift in resource investment towards immunity and away from reproduction. While the effect on population growth is likely to be small, reduced fecundity in GA-affected colonies does suggest a selective pressure against GAs.

A complex of water-hyacinth derived pellets immobilized with Chlorella sp. was applied, for the first time, in the bioremediation of Cadmium (Cd). The Cd(II) removal efficiency of the complex was optimized by investigating several parameters, including the pellet materials, algal culture age, and light intensity. Results showed that the Cd(II) removal efficiency was positively related to the algal immobilization efficiency and the algal bioaccumulation capacity. Since higher surface hydrophilicity leads to higher immobilization efficiency, the water-hyacinth leaf biochar pellet (WLBp) was selected as the optimal carrier. A maximum Cd(II) removal efficiency of 92.45% was obtained by the complex of WLBp immobilized with algal cells in stationary growth phase and illuminated with a light intensity of 119 μmol m−2 s−1. Recovery tests on both microalgal cells and the WLBp demonstrated that the algal cells and the biochar pellet can be economically recycled and reused.

Ocean acidification is expected to affect coral reefs in multiple ways, in part, by depressing the calcification of scleractinian corals. To evaluate how coral communities will respond to ocean acidification, research into the effects on ecological processes determining community structure is now needed. The present study focused on corals utilizing soft tissues (i.e., mesenterial filaments) as agonistic mechanism, and evaluated their ability to compete for space under ocean acidification. Using aquarium-reared specimens in Monaco, single polyps of Galaxea fascicularis were paired with branch tips of Acropora hyacinthus to stimulate competitive interactions, which were evaluated through the production and use of mesenterial filaments in causing tissue damage under ambient (~ 600 μatm) and elevated pCO (~ 1200 μatm). At 1200 μatm pCO, and when paired with A. hyacinthus, the extrusion of mesenterial filaments from G. fascicularis occurred 2 days earlier than under ambient pCO, although ultimately the mesenterial filaments caused the same amount of tissue necrosis on A. hyacinthus under both pCO regimes after 7 days. This outcome supports the hypothesis that some kinds of competitive mechanisms utilized by scleractinian corals (i.e., mesenterial filaments) will be unaffected by short exposure to pCO as high as 1200 μatm.

Understanding the response of coral growth to natural variation in the environment, as well as to acute temperature stress under current and future climate change conditions, is critical to predicting the future health of coral reef ecosystems. As such, ecological surveys are beginning to focus on corals that live in high thermal stress environments to understand how future coral populations may adapt to climate change. We investigated the relationship between coral growth, thermal microhabitat, symbionts type, and thermal acclimatization of four species of the Acropora hyacinthus complex in back-reef lagoons in American Samoa. Coral growth was measured from August 2010 to April 2016 using horizontal planar area of coral colonies derived from photographs and in situ maximum width measurements. Despite marked intraspecific variation, we found that planar colony growth rates were significantly different among cryptic species. The highly heat tolerant A. hyacinthus variant “HE” increased in area an average of 2.9% month−1 (0.03 cm average mean radial extension month−1). By contrast, the three less tolerant species averaged 6.1% (0.07 cm average mean radial extension month−1). Planar growth rates were 40% higher on average in corals harboring Clade C versus Clade D symbiont types, although marked inter-colony variation in growth rendered this difference nonsignificant. Planar growth rates for all four species dropped to near zero following a 2015 bleaching event, independent of the visually estimated percent area of bleaching. Within 1 yr, growth rates recovered to previous levels, confirming previous studies that found sublethal effects of thermal stress on coral growth. Long-term studies of individual coral colonies provide an important tool to measure impacts of environmental change and allow integration of coral physiology, genetics, symbionts, and microclimate on reef growth patterns.

This work describes purification and characterisation of a monocot mannose-specific lectin from Hyacinth bulbs. The purified lectin has a molecular mass of ∼30 kDa in reducing as well as in non-reducing SDS-PAGE. In hydrodynamic studies by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) showed that purified lectin was monomeric in nature with a molecular size of 2.38 ± 0.03 nm. Agglutination activity of purified lectin was confirmed by rabbit erythrocytes and its agglutination activity was inhibited by d-mannose and a glycoprotein (ovalbumin). Glycoprotein nature of purified lectin was confirmed by Periodic Acid Schiff’s (PAS) stain. Purified lectin showed moderate pH and thermal stability by retaining hemagglutination activity from pH 6–8 and temperature up to 60 °C. It also suppressed the growth of human colon cancer cells (Caco-2) and cervical cancer cells (HeLa) with IC50 values of 127 μg/mL and 158 μg/mL respectively, after 24-h treatment. Morphological studies of treated cells (Caco-2 and HeLa) with hyacinth lectin by AO/EB dual staining indicated that purified lectin is capable of inducing apoptosis.

Hyacinthus orientalis (Asparagaceae) is an ornamental plant that has been recently introduced into the Brazilian market from Europe. A plant showing leaf mottling was acquired at a flower market in the city of Sao Paulo and subjected to transmission, serological (ELISA) and molecular (RT-PCR, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis) detection assays to identify a possible causal agent of viral nature for the symptoms. The plant was ELISA positive with a potyvirus group antiserum. A fragment of the coat protein (CP) coding region was RT-PCR amplified and directly sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence of the CP shares the highest identity (96%) with Hyacinth mosaic virus (HyaMV). The Brazilian hyacinth potyvirus isolate formed a monophyletic group with HyaMV isolates from Asparagaceae and Amaryllidaceae species. This is the first detection of HyaMV in Brazil, and infection is likely to be widespread because hyacinths multiply through bulbs, which accumulate viruses and facilitate their dissemination.

The coral microbiome is known to fluctuate in response to environmental variation and has been suggested to vary seasonally. However, most studies to date, particularly studies on bacterial communities, have examined temporal variation over a time frame of less than 1 year, which is insufficient to establish if microbiome variations are indeed seasonal in nature. The present study focused on expanding our understanding of long-term variability in microbial community composition using two common coral species, Acropora hyacinthus, and Acropora spathulata, at two mid-shelf reefs on the Great Barrier Reef. By sampling over a 2-year time period, this study aimed to determine whether temporal variations reflect seasonal cycles. Community composition of both bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae was characterized through 16S rRNA gene and ITS2 rDNA metabarcoding. We observed significant variations in community composition of both bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae among time points for A. hyacinthus and A. spathulata. However, there was no evidence to suggest that temporal variations were cyclical in nature and represented seasonal variation. Clear evidence for differences in the microbial communities found between reefs suggests that reef location and coral species play a larger role than season in driving microbial community composition in corals. In order to identify the basis of temporal patterns in coral microbial community composition, future studies should employ longer time series of sampling at sufficient temporal resolution to identify the environmental correlates of microbiome variation.

Aim and Objective: Wastewater treatment/remediation is a very important process that has a great environmental and economic impact. Therefore, it is crucial to innovate different methods to remove pollutants of different sources from wastewater. This work was conducted in order to study the removal of lead (Pb+2) from wastewater using microspheres of composites of sodium alginate, cellulose and chitosan, as well as using a cost-effective green route through composites of sodium alginate and dried water hyacinth. Materials and Methods: Molecular modeling at B3LYP/6-31g(d,p) was utilized to study sodium alginate, cellulose and chitosan. Sodium alginate was cross-linked with calcium chloride to form microspheres, then both sodium alginate/cellulose and sodium alginate/chitosan were also crosslinked as 50/50 to form microspheres. The roots of the aquatic plant water hyacinth in dry form were added to the cross-linked sodium alginate for up to 70%. SEM and FTIR were employed to study the surface of the prepared microspheres and their structures respectively. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to study the levels of Pb. Results: Molecular modeling indicated that the blending of such structures enhances their ability to bind with surrounding molecules owing to their ability to form hydrogen bonds. SEM results indicated that homogeneous structures of cellulose and chitosan are deformed when blended with sodium alginate, and FTIR confirmed the proper formation of the desired blends. Microspheres from sodium alginate showed the ability to remove Pb+2 from wastewater. SEM indicated further deformation in the morphology with the roughness of sodium alginate/water hyacinth microspheres, while FTIR confirmed the uniform matrices of the microspheres. The removal of Pb+2 was enhanced because of the addition of dried water hyacinth's roots. Conclusion: Modeling, experimental and kinetic data highlight sodium alginate/water hyacinth root as a green route to remediate Pb+2 from wastewater.

Flavonols are important copigments that affect flower petal coloration. Flavonol synthase (FLS) catalyzes the conversion of dihydroflavonols to flavonols. In this study, we identified a FLS gene, MaFLS, expressed in petals of the ornamental monocot Muscari aucheri (grape hyacinth) and analyzed its spatial and temporal expression patterns. qRT-PCR analysis showed that MaFLS was predominantly expressed in the early stages of flower development. We next analyzed the in planta functions of MaFLS. Heterologous expression of MaFLS in Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) resulted in a reduction in pigmentation in the petals, substantially inhibiting the expression of endogenous tobacco genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis (i.e., NtDFR, NtANS, and NtAN2) and upregulating the expression of NtFLS. The total anthocyanin content in the petals of the transformed tobacco plants was dramatically reduced, whereas the total flavonol content was increased. Our study suggests that MaFLS plays a key role in flavonol biosynthesis and flower coloration in grape hyacinth. Moreover, MaFLS may represent a new potential gene for molecular breeding of flower color modification and provide a basis for analyzing the effects of copigmentation on flower coloration in grape hyacinth.

Particle size is one factor affecting phosphorus (P) dynamics in soils and sediments. This study investigated how flow facilitated by hydraulic pumps and aquatic vegetation species water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) affected particle size and P-dynamics in organic sediments in agricultural drainage ditches. Sediments with finer particle size (>0.002 mm) were hypothesized to contain greater total P (TP) and less labile P than sediments with coarser particle size. Particle size was determined using a LS 13 320 Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer. Sediments were tested for pH, TP, and organic matter. Fractions of P were determined using a sequential fractionation experiment and 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy. Larger average particle size and lower average total P concentrations were found in the inflows of the field ditches compared to the outflows. Presence of flow and aquatic vegetation did not have a significant impact on particle size, TP, or labile P fractions. Median (p = 0.10) particle size was not significantly correlated to TP. Overall, there was an average trend of coarser particle size and lower P concentrations in the inflow compared to the outflow. The presence of inorganic limerock could have affected results due to increased P adsorption capacity and larger average particle size compared to the organic fraction of the sediment.

Zooxanthellate corals are found throughout the tropics, but also extend into subtropical and marginal locations due to the presence of warm ocean currents. The population history of corals in marginal locations is of great interest in relation to changing global climatic conditions, as species edge zones might play an important role in evolutionary innovation. Here, we examine the genetic structure of a widely distributed coral species complex, Acropora hyacinthus, from tropical to high subtropical regions along the Kuroshio Current in Taiwan and Japan. Population genetic analysis of 307 specimens from 18 locations (7 reefal and 11 marginal) identified at least four genetic lineages within the A. hyacinthus complex: HyaA, HyaB, HyaC (dominating reefal locations) and HyaD dominating marginal locations in mainland Japan and Taiwan, except the upper Penghu Islands, which were dominated by HyaC. Crossing experiments suggested semi-incompatibility and hybridization between HyaC and D from reefal locations, implying that the existence of hybridization partners enhances diversification and genetic diversity. An incomplete barrier between the HyaC and HyaD dominations was found along the two straits in the Ryukyu Islands, where Kuroshio Current flows constantly. Despite geographical distance, the genetic composition of populations in mainland Japan was comparable to that in mainland Taiwan, which may reflect a region-specific connectivity around the northern limit of A. hyacinthus in the Pacific. In contrast, populations in the Ryukyu Islands were not significantly different from those of Palau and the Great Barrier Reef. While the precise taxonomic nature of the lineages found around the Kuroshio Current remains to be elucidated, these results indicate that, despite the presence of four lineages in the Kuroshio triangle, low genetic diversity populations of the two main lines might be isolating and differentiating in the marginal region.

During the sexual reproduction of flowering plants, epigenetic control of gene expression and genome integrity by DNA methylation and histone modifications plays an important role in male gametogenesis. In this study, we compared the chromatin modification patterns of the generative, sperm cells and vegetative nuclei during Hyacinthus orientalis male gametophyte development. Changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of 5-methylcytosine, acetylated histone H4 and histone deacetylase indicated potential differences in the specific epigenetic state of all analysed cells, in both the mature cellular pollen grains and the in vitro growing pollen tubes. Interestingly, we observed unique localization of chromatin modifications in the area of the generative and the vegetative nuclei located near each other in the male germ unit, indicating the precise mechanisms of gene expression regulation in this region. We discuss the differences in the patterns of the epigenetic marks along with our previous reports of nuclear metabolism and changes in chromatin organization and activity in hyacinth male gametophyte cells. We also propose that this epigenetic status of the analysed nuclei is related to the different acquired fates and biological functions of these cells. A mistake of using pseudo-first-order kinetic equation for testing kinetic parameters of adsorption has been pointed out, as well as inappropriate citations for the adsorption kinetic models. Further, this discussion gives a correct pseudo-first-order kinetic equation and makes a suggestion for citing the original papers for the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic equations.
