Abstract

This study examined leisure and subjective well-being (SWB) of Korean transnational-split families (KTSF) who live in Korea and the U.S. Using data collected from an online survey, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to test seven hypotheses related to the affective components of the SWB of KTSF. Income, frequency of family communication, marital satisfaction, and the size of leisure repertoire were significantly associated with the positive affect of KTSF. The amount of leisure time and the frequency of leisure involvement were not significant. Two regression models were tested to understand the differential validity of the time and frequency of six different types of leisure activities on positive affect. The leisure time and frequency of Hobbies and Other Activities were significant, while other activity types were not. 2. Leisure, acculturation, and life satisfaction of Korean transnational-split families: A mixed-method study

Abstract

AbstractKorean Transnational-split Families (KTSF) are some of the most unique Living Apart Together relationships. However, little is known about their acculturation to a new host country and its relationship with leisure and life satisfaction. Using a convergent mixed-method design, this study investigated the relationship between leisure, acculturation, and life satisfaction of KTSF in the U.S. An online survey and in-depth interviews with 10 KTSF adults were conducted. The results from structural equation modeling showed that leisure time with Koreans negatively impacted acculturation, yet it positively affected life satisfaction. Leisure time with Americans did not significantly affect acculturation and life satisfaction. Acculturation positively affected life satisfaction. Most qualitative data supported the quantitative findings. The data also showed other important issues in KTSF’s life satisfaction, such as the academic and personal success of children, “laid back” American lifestyles, less emphasis on materialism, quality natural environment, and lack of obligation to extended family.

Abstract

The study explored the leisure behaviors and factors affecting leisure among mothers and fathers in Korean Transnational Split families (KTSF). Transnationalism served as the theoretical framework in this study. Data were collected with the use of 19 individual in-depth interviews with KTSF mothers residing in the U.S. and fathers residing in Korea. The leisure of women in the U.S. involved participating in similar activities as in Korea, yet the motivations for participation were different in the new environment. Their leisure was shaped by family separation, immigration status, and the family life stage. Fathers in Korea engaged in active leisure pursuits such as exercising, golf, and tennis, as well as socializing and home-based activities, to distract themselves from loneliness and family separation, and to address health issues caused by overwork. Abstract

In the current study, we analyzed how leisure time of adolescents, which helps them to live a healthy life, affects their happiness. The raw data of ‘KCYPS 2018’ presented by the National Youth Policy Institute were used for the study. Employed statistics were frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, k-means cluster analysis, and t-test using SPSS 24.0 version. The leisure time of adolescents had a positive effect on happiness, and exercise time had a moderating effect in the relationship between leisure time and happiness. In particular, in the high leisure time group, exercise time had a stronger effect on happiness. What influences happiness is not how much leisure time they have, but how much exercise they do in a given leisure time. Therefore, in order to provide adolescents with the desired direction of leisure and life, leisure education on the nature of leisure and how to utilize the leisure time is necessary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the recreation specialization tendency according to leisure sport nostalgia of women. The subjects of the study were to set up a population of women over the age of 20 who were regularly participating in leisure sports activities, and to analyze a total of 200 questionnaires, excluding those that were returned with poor responses or missing answers, using the purposive sampling method. In order to compare the level of recreation specialization according to the level of leisure sports nostalgia, the level of leisure sports nostalgia was classified as upper, middle, and lower using K-means cluster analysis. The one-way ANOVA was conducted in order to verify the difference in recreation specialization based on the groups, and the multiple regression analysis was employed to analyze the effect of leisure sports nostalgia on recreation specialization. According to the results, firstly, there were differences in all sub-factors of recreation specialization according to the level of leisure sports nostalgia. In particular, the specialization of the group with high level of leisure sports nostalgia was high, while those with low levels of leisure sports nostalgia were low. Second, personal identity experience and group identity among sub-factors of leisure sports nostalgia were found to have significant positive influences on recreation specialization.
