3. Morphological productivity and neological intuition

Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between morphological productivity and neological intuition, defined as the ability to identify novel words as such. It can be hypothesised that the more productive a word-formation process is, the less salient the neologisms it forms will be. We test this hypothesis experimentally on neologisms formed with prefixes and suffixes of variable productivity. Three experiments are conducted, involving lexical identification and reading tasks with eye tracking, to provide a comprehensive description of neological intuition. The negative correlation between productivity and neological salience is supported by experimental results, but only in the case of suffixed neologisms, as opposed to prefixed ones. The effect of affix type on neological intuition can be explained by differences in the grammatical nature of prefixes and suffixes. Broadly speaking, investigating the linguistic factors of neological intuition provides an original approach to both linguistic and psycholinguistic issues related to word structure and lexical processing.

Abstract

Words with complex semantic types such as book are characterised by a multiplicity of interpretations that are not mutually exclusive (e.g., as a physical object and/or informational content). Their status with respect to lexical ambiguity is notoriously unclear, and it is debatable whether complex types are a particular form of polysemy (closely related to metonymy) or whether they belong to monosemy. In this study, we investigate the nature of complex types by conducting two experiments on ambiguous nouns in French. The first experiment collects speakers’ judgements about the sameness of meaning between different uses of complex-type, metonymic and monosemous words. The second experiment uses a priming paradigm and a sensicality task to investigate the online processing of complex-type words, as opposed to metonymic and monosemous words. Overall results indicate that, on a continuum of lexical ambiguity, complex types are closer to monosemy than to metonymy. The different interpretations of complex-type words are highly connected and fall under the same meaning, arguably in relation to a unique reference. These results suggest that complex types are associated with single underspecified entries in the mental lexicon. Moreover, they highlight the need for a model of lexical representations of ambiguous words that can account for the difference between complex types and metonymy.

10. The Effect of Worked Examples and Self-Explanation Prompts on Mathematics Standardized Assessments

Abstract

Recent work has demonstrated that having students study worked examples and answer self-explanation prompts as part of their problem-solving practice improves learning on researcher-developed measures of mathematical proficiency. However, little work has been done to date to investigate whether these benefits translate to improvements on the types of standardized assessments typically used by school districts to assess proficiency and make curricular decisions. In the present study, we examined the impact of using worked-example and self-explanation prompt assignments on the performance of 5th grade students in one urban district on two district-administered standardized tests: i-Ready and PARCC. Results indicate the approach effectively improves student mathematic scores on both standardized measures. This study provides policy-meaningful outcomes. The findings from the current study show that standardized assessment scores can be improved by merely changing the type of practice problems that students engage with. Interventions like this provide a pathway for underperforming schools and districts to improve student achievement through easy access points, which are low-cost and can be added to the curricula districts currently use.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that higher folate intake is associated with decreased colorectal cancer (CRC) risk; however, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not fully understood. Genetic variation that may have a direct or indirect impact on folate metabolism can provide insights into folates role in CRC. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to perform a genome-wide interaction analysis to identify genetic variants that may modify the association of folate on CRC risk. METHODS: We applied traditional case-control logistic regression, joint 3-degree of freedom, and a 2-step weighted hypothesis approach to test the interactions of common variants (allele frequency >1%) across the genome and dietary folate, folic acid supplement use, and total folate in relation to risk of CRC in 30,550 cases and 42,336 controls from 51 studies from 3 genetic consortia (CCFR, CORECT, GECCO). RESULTS: Inverse associations of dietary, total folate, and folic acid supplement with CRC were found (odds ratio [OR]: 0.93; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.90, 0.96; and 0.91; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.94 per quartile higher intake, and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.78, 0.88) for users compared with nonusers, respectively). Interactions (P-interaction < 5×10-8) of folic acid supplement and variants in the 3p25.2 locus (in the region of Synapsin II [SYN2]/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 4 [TIMP4]) were found using traditional interaction analysis, with variant rs150924902 (located upstream to SYN2) showing the strongest interaction. In stratified analyses by rs150924902 genotypes, folate supplementation was associated with decreased CRC risk among those carrying the TT genotype (OR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.79, 0.86) but increased CRC risk among those carrying the TA genotype (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.29, 2.05), suggesting a qualitative interaction (P-interaction = 1.4×10-8). No interactions were observed for dietary and total folate. CONCLUSIONS: Variation in 3p25.2 locus may modify the association of folate supplement with CRC risk. Experimental studies and studies incorporating other relevant omics data are warranted to validate this finding.

Abstract

BackgroundMicrosatellite instability-high (MSI-high) tumors comprise ~15% of sporadic colorectal cancers (CRC) and are associated with elevated T cell infiltration. However, the universality of this response across T cell subtypes with distinct functions is unknown.MethodsIncluding 1,236 CRC tumors from three observational studies, we conducted in-situ T cell profiling using a customized 9-plex (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD45RA, CD45RO, FOXP3, KRT, MKI67, and DAPI) multispectral immunofluorescence assay. MSI status was assessed through polymerase chain reaction or immunohistochemical assays. We used multivariable ordinal logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (OR per increasing quantile) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association of MSI status with quantiles of T cell densities in either tumor epithelial or stromal tissue areas.ResultsCompared to microsatellite instability low or microsatellite stable (MSI-low/MSS) tumors, MSI-high status was associated with higher density for the majority of immune subsets (twelve out of eighteen) in both epithelial and stromal tissue areas. The strongest associations were for CD3+CD8+ T cells in epithelial areas [OR (95% CI) for naive, memory, and regulatory subsets = 3.49 (2.57, 4.75); 2.82 (2.10, 3.78); 3.04 (2.24, 4.13), respectively]. Conversely, stromal area CD3+CD4+ memory T cells were inversely associated [OR (95% CI) = 0.68 (0.51, 0.91)].DiscussionMSI-high status was strongly associated with higher densities of most T cell subsets in both epithelial and stromal tissue areas. Our investigation supports efforts to identify patients who may be more likely to respond to current immunotherapy treatments.SignificanceThis study helps us better understand how a clinically relevant tumor phenotype, microsatellite instability status, is related to different functioning T cell densities in colorectal tumors, which may impact future immunotherapy strategies.

Abstract

Category: Hindfoot; Ankle Introduction/Purpose: Traditionally, foot and ankle alignment is quantified on 2D standing radiographs. This imaging method present limitations in capturing the 3D nature of our foot and ankle alignment and the obtained manual measurements are prone to observer error. This study aims to integrate weight-bearing CT (WBCT) imaging and advanced deep learning techniques to automate and enhance quantification our 3D foot and ankle alignment. Methods: Thirty-two patients who underwent a WBCT of the foot and ankle were retrospectively included. Training and validation of a 3D nnU-Net model on 45 cases to automate the segmentation into bony models was assessed by Hausdorff distance (measures how far two 3D bone model scans are from each other) and dice coefficient (measures the similarity between 3D bone model scans). Afterwards, 35 clinically relevant 3D measurements were automatically computed using a custom-made tool. Automated measurements were assessed for accuracy against manual measurements, while the latter were analyzed for inter-observer reliability. Results: Deep learning segmentation results showed a mean Hausdorff distance of 1.41mm and a mean dice coefficient of 0.95. A good to excellent reliability and mean prediction error of under 2 degrees was found for all angles except the talonavicular coverage angle and distal metatarsal articular angle, which were under 2.5 degrees. Conclusion: In summary, this study introduces a fully automated framework (Fig. 1) to quantify foot and ankle alignment and showcases reliability comparable to current clinical practice measurements. This operator-friendly and time-efficient tool holds promise for implementation in a clinical setting, benefitting both radiologists and surgeons. Future studies are encouraged to assess the tool's impact on streamlining image assessment workflows in clinical practice.

Abstract

PurposeThe ability to generate natural killer (NK) cells from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) has given rise to new possibilities for the large-scale production of homogeneous immunotherapeutic cellular products and opened new avenues towards the creation of “off-the-shelf” cancer immunotherapies. However, the differentiation of NK cells from iPSCs remains poorly understood, particularly regarding the ontogenic landscape of iPSC-derived NK (iNK) cells produced in vitro and the influence that the differentiation strategy employed may have on the iNK profile. MethodsTo investigate this question, we conducted a comparative analysis of two sets of iNK cells generated from the same iPSC line using two different protocols: (i) a short-term, clinically compatible feeder-free protocol corresponding to primitive hematopoiesis, and (ii) a lymphoid-based protocol representing the definitive hematopoietic step. Results and discussionOur work demonstrated that both protocols are capable of producing functional iNK cells. However, the two sets of resulting iNKs exhibited distinct phenotypes and transcriptomic profiles. The lymphoid-based differentiation approach generated iNKs with a more mature and activated profile, which demonstrated higher cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines compared to iNK cells produced under short-term feeder-free conditions suggesting that the differentiation strategy must be considered when designing iNK cell–based adoptive immunotherapies.

Abstract

This study explores the link between the [OIII]88mu emission, a well-known tracer of HII regions, and 24mu continuum, often used to trace warm dust in the ionized phases of galaxies. We investigate the local conditions driving the relation between those tracers in the Magellanic Clouds, comparing observations with Cloudy models consisting of an HII region plus a photodissociation region (PDR) component, varying the stellar age, the initial density (at the illuminated edge of the cloud), and the ionization parameter. We introduce a new parameter, cPDR, to quantify the proportion of emission arising from PDRs and that with an origin in HII regions along each line of sight. We use the ratio ([CII]+[OI])/[OIII] as a proxy for the ratio of PDR versus HII region emission, and compare it to [OIII]/24mu. The use of [OIII]/24mu and [OIII]/70mu together allows us to constrain the models most efficiently. We find a correlation over at least 3 orders of magnitude in [OIII]88mu and 24mu continuum in spatially resolved maps of the Magellanic Cloud regions as well as unresolved galaxy-wide low metallicity galaxies of the Dwarf Galaxy Survey. Most of the regions have low proportions of PDRs along the lines of sight (< 12%), while a limited area of some of the mapped regions can reach 30 to 50%. For most lines of sight within the star-forming regions we have studied in the Magellanic Clouds, HII regions are the dominant phase. We propose the use of the correlation between the [OIII]88mu and 24mu continuum as a new predictive tool to estimate, for example, the [OIII]88mu emission when the 24mu continuum is available or inversely. This can be useful to prepare for ALMA observations of [OIII]88mu in high-z galaxies. Abstract

Summary: Background: Consumption of fibre, fruits and vegetables have been linked with lower colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. A genome-wide gene-environment (G × E) analysis was performed to test whether genetic variants modify these associations. Methods: A pooled sample of 45 studies including up to 69,734 participants (cases: 29,896; controls: 39,838) of European ancestry were included. To identify G × E interactions, we used the traditional 1--degree-of-freedom (DF) G × E test and to improve power a 2-step procedure and a 3DF joint test that investigates the association between a genetic variant and dietary exposure, CRC risk and G × E interaction simultaneously. Abstract

BackgroundThe use of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) may interact with genetic variants to influence colorectal cancer (CRC) risk.MethodsWe conducted a genome-wide, gene-environment interaction between single nucleotide polymorphisms and the use of any MHT, estrogen only, and combined estrogen-progestogen therapy with CRC risk, among 28 486 postmenopausal women (11 519 CRC patients and 16 967 participants without CRC) from 38 studies, using logistic regression, 2-step method, and 2- or 3-degree-of-freedom joint test. A set-based score test was applied for rare genetic variants.ResultsThe use of any MHT, estrogen only and estrogen-progestogen were associated with a reduced CRC risk (odds ratio [OR] = 0.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64 to 0.78; OR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.53 to 0.79; and OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.59 to 0.90, respectively). The 2-step method identified a statistically significant interaction between a GRIN2B variant rs117868593 and MHT use, whereby MHT-associated CRC risk was statistically significantly reduced in women with the GG genotype (OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.64 to 0.72) but not within strata of GC or CC genotypes. A statistically significant interaction between a DCBLD1 intronic variant at 6q22.1 (rs10782186) and MHT use was identified by the 2-degree-of-freedom joint test. The MHT-associated CRC risk was reduced with increasing number of rs10782186-C alleles, showing odds ratios of 0.78 (95% CI = 0.70 to 0.87) for TT, 0.68 (95% CI = 0.63 to 0.73) for TC, and 0.66 (95% CI = 0.60 to 0.74) for CC genotypes. Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine has gained a lot of momentum in the last decades and has been applied to various fields of medicine. Advances in computer science, medical informatics, robotics, and the need for personalized medicine have facilitated the role of AI in modern healthcare. Similarly, as in other fields, AI applications, such as machine learning, artificial neural networks, and deep learning, have shown great potential in andrology and reproductive medicine. AI-based tools are poised to become valuable assets with abilities to support and aid in diagnosing and treating male infertility, and in improving the accuracy of patient care. These automated, AI-based predictions may offer consistency and efficiency in terms of time and cost in infertility research and clinical management. In andrology and reproductive medicine, AI has been used for objective sperm, oocyte, and embryo selection, prediction of surgical outcomes, cost-effective assessment, development of robotic surgery, and clinical decision-making systems. In the future, better integration and implementation of AI into medicine will undoubtedly lead to pioneering evidence-based breakthroughs and the reshaping of andrology and reproductive medicine.

Abstract

Change-of-state verbs are heterogeneous with respect to their occurrence in the causative-anticausative alternation. While some of them are never used as anticausatives (e.g., destroy), others seem to largely favor the anticausative form (e.g., wither). On the basis of corpus data and statistical analysis for French change-of-state verbs, we show that there is a relationship between the anticausative use of a verb and the semantic role of its transitive subject: The more frequently the transitive subject of a verb is a cause (as opposed to agent or instrument), the more frequently the verb is used as anticausative (as opposed to transitive causative). In addition to presenting this novel empirical finding, we propose an account for the observed correlation: Depending on their semantic role, causers have different likelihoods to end up in the subject position of a transitive causative sentence, and the likelihood is lower for causes than for agents. Different factors are considered responsible for the observed correlation, including the asymmetry between agents and causes concerning salience as event participants, topic-worthiness, and the possibility of being expressed as anticausative adjuncts.
