We present a comprehensive study of small-scale three-dimensional (3D) tetrahedral CoFe nanostructure arrays prepared by focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID) and placed in two distinct orientations with respect to the direction of an external magnetic field. Using ultra-sensitive micro-Hall magnetometry we obtain angular-dependent magnetic stray field hysteresis loops that show characteristic cascading magnetic switching close to zero magnetic field. By employing micromagnetic simulations we could reproduce the hysteresis loops and identify characteristic field dependent magnetic configurations including a vortex-type groundstate. From this we derive a coarse-graining macrospin model and show that the complex switching behavior can be explained by the reorientation dynamics of non-interacting uniaxial anisotropic magnetic grains modeled as a superposition of Stoner-Wohlfarth particles.

Technological advancement drives financial innovation, reshaping the traditional finance landscape and redefining user-market interactions. The rise of blockchain and Decentralized Finance (DeFi) underscores this intertwined evolution of technology and finance. While DeFi has introduced exciting opportunities, it has also exposed the ecosystem to new forms of market misconduct. This paper aims to bridge the academic and regulatory gaps by addressing key research questions about market misconduct in DeFi. We begin by discussing how blockchain technology can potentially enable the emergence of novel forms of market misconduct. We then offer a comprehensive definition and taxonomy for understanding DeFi market misconduct. Through comparative analysis and empirical measurements, we examine the novel forms of misconduct in DeFi, shedding light on their characteristics and social impact. Subsequently, we investigate the challenges of building a tailored regulatory framework for DeFi. We identify key areas where existing regulatory frameworks may need enhancement. Finally, we discuss potential approaches that bring DeFi into the regulatory perimeter.

In the Proof of Stake (PoS) Ethereum ecosystem, users can stake ETH on Lido to receive stETH, a Liquid Staking Derivative (LSD) that represents staked ETH and accrues staking rewards. LSDs improve the liquidity of staked assets by facilitating their use in secondary markets, such as for collateralized borrowing on Aave or asset exchanges on Curve. The composability of Lido, Aave, and Curve enables an emerging strategy known as leverage staking, where users supply stETH as collateral on Aave to borrow ETH and then acquire more stETH. This can be done directly by initially staking ETH on Lido or indirectly by swapping ETH for stETH on Curve. While this iterative process enhances financial returns, it also introduces potential risks. This paper explores the opportunities and risks of leverage staking. We establish a formal framework for leverage staking with stETH and identify 442 such positions on Ethereum over 963 days. These positions represent a total volume of 537,123 ETH (877m USD). Our data reveal that the majority (81.7%) of leverage staking positions achieved an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) higher than that of conventional staking on Lido. Despite the high returns, we also recognize the risks of leverage staking. From the Terra crash incident, we understand that token devaluation can greatly impact the market. Therefore, we conduct stress tests under extreme conditions, particularly during stETH devaluations, to thoroughly evaluate the associated risks. Our simulations indicate that leverage staking can exacerbate the risk of cascading liquidations by introducing additional selling pressures from liquidation and deleveraging activities. Moreover, this strategy poses broader systemic risks as it undermines the stability of ordinary positions by intensifying their liquidations.

Europium intermetallic compounds show a variety of different ground states and anomalous physical properties due to the interactions between the localized 4f electrons and the delocalized electronic states. Europium is also the most reactive of the rare earth metals which might be the reason why very few works are concerned with the properties of Eu-based thin films. Here we address the low-temperature magnetic properties of ferromagnetic EuPd$_2$ thin films prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. The epitaxial (111)-oriented thin films grow on MgO (100) with eight different domain orientations. We analyze the low-temperature magnetic hysteresis behavior by means of micromagnetic simulations taking the multi-domain morphology explicitly into account and quantify the magnetic crystal anisotropy contribution. By ab initio calculations we trace back the microscopic origin of the magnetic anisotropy to thin film-induced biaxial strain.

Intermetallic binary compounds of europium reveal a variety of interesting phenomena due to the interconnection between two different magnetic and 4f electronic (valence) states, which are particularly close in energy. The valence states or magnetic properties are thus particularly sensitive to strain-tuning in these materials. Consequently, we grew epitaxial EuPd$_2$ (magnetic Eu$^{2+}$) and EuPd$_3$ (nonmagnetic Eu$^{3+}$) thin films on MgO(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. Ambient X-ray diffraction confirms an epitaxial relationship of cubic Laves-type (C15) EuPd$_2$ with an (111)-out-of-plane orientation, whereby eight distinct in-plane crystallographic domains develop. For simple cubic EuPd$_3$ two different out-of-plane orientations can be obtained by changing the substrate annealing temperature under ultra-high vacuum conditions from 600 {\deg}C to 1000 {\deg}C for one hour. A small resistance minimum evolves for EuPd$_3$ thin films grown with low temperature substrate annealing, which was previously found even in single crystals of EuPd$_3$ and might be attributed to a Kondo or weak localization effect. Absence of influence of an applied magnetic fields and magnetotransport measurements suggest a nonmagnetic ground state for EuPd$_3$ thin films, i. e., a purely trivalent Eu valence, as found in EuPd$_3$ single crystals. For EuPd$_2$ magnetic ordering below ~72 K is observed, quite similar to single crystal behavior. Field dependent measurements of the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect show hysteresis effects below ~0.4 T and an anomalous Hall effect below ~70 K, which saturates around 1.4 T, thus proving a ferromagnetic ground state of the divalent Eu.

Bulk EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ show a temperature-driven valence transisition of europium from $\sim$+2 above 200 K to $\sim$+3 below 100 K, which is correlated with a shrinking by approximatly 2 % of the crystal lattice along the two a-axes. Due to this interconnection between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom the influence of strain in epitaxial thin films is particularly interesting. Ambient X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms an epitaxial relationship of tetragonal EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ on MgO(001) with an out-of plane c-axis orientation for the thin film, whereby the a-axes of both lattices align. XRD at low temperatures reveals a strong coupling of the thin film lattice to the substrate, showing no abrupt compression over the temperature range from 300 to 10 K. Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at 300 and 20 K reveals a temperature-independent valence of +2.0 for Eu. The evolving biaxial tensile strain upon cooling is suggested to suppress the valence transition. Instead low temperature transport measurements of the resistivity and the Hall effect in a magnetic field up to 5 T point to a film thickness independent phase transition at 16-20 K, indicating magnetic ordering.

Modern search systems use several large ranker models with transformer architectures. These models require large computational resources and are not suitable for usage on devices with limited computational resources. Knowledge distillation is a popular compression technique that can reduce the resource needs of such models, where a large teacher model transfers knowledge to a small student model. To drastically reduce memory requirements and energy consumption, we propose two extensions for a popular sentence-transformer distillation procedure: generation of an optimal size vocabulary and dimensionality reduction of the embedding dimension of teachers prior to distillation. We evaluate these extensions on two different types of ranker models. This results in extremely compressed student models whose analysis on a test dataset shows the significance and utility of our proposed extensions.

Federated analytics has many applications in edge computing, its use can lead to better decision making for service provision, product development, and user experience. We propose a Bayesian approach to trend detection in which the probability of a keyword being trendy, given a dataset, is computed via Bayes' Theorem; the probability of a dataset, given that a keyword is trendy, is computed through secure aggregation of such conditional probabilities over local datasets of users. We propose a protocol, named SAFE, for Bayesian federated analytics that offers sufficient privacy for production grade use cases and reduces the computational burden of users and an aggregator. We illustrate this approach with a trend detection experiment and discuss how this approach could be extended further to make it production-ready., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure

A digital goods auction is a type of auction where potential buyers bid the maximal price that they are willing to pay for a certain item, which a seller can produce at a negligible cost and in unlimited quantity. To maximise her benefits, the aim for the seller is to find the optimal sales price, which every buyer whose bid is not lower will pay. For fairness and privacy purposes, buyers may be concerned about protecting the confidentiality of their bids. Secure Multi-Party Computation is a domain of Cryptography that would allow the seller to compute the optimal sales price while guaranteeing that the bids remain secret. Paradoxically, as a function of the buyers' bids, the sales price inevitably reveals some private information. Generic frameworks and entropy-based techniques based on Quantitative Information Flow have been developed in order to quantify and restrict those leakages. Due to their combinatorial nature, these techniques do not scale to large input spaces. In this work, we aim at scaling those privacy analyses to large input spaces in the particular case of digital goods auctions. We derive closed-form formulas for the posterior min-entropy of private inputs in two and three-party auctions, which enables us to effectively quantify the information leaks for arbitrarily large input spaces. We also provide supportive experimental evidence that enables us to formulate a conjecture that would allow us to extend our results to any number of parties.

We are living in an age in which digitization will connect more and more physical assets with IT systems and where IoT endpoints will generate a wealth of valuable data. Companies, individual users, and organizations alike therefore have the need to control their own physical or non-physical assets and data sources. At the same time, they recognize the need for, and opportunity to, share access to such data and digitized physical assets. This paper sets out our technology vision for such sharing ecosystems, reports initial work in that direction, identifies challenges for realizing this vision, and seeks feedback and collaboration from the academic access-control community in that R\&D space.

Elaborate protocols in Secure Multi-party Computation enable several participants to compute a public function of their own private inputs while ensuring that no undesired information leaks about the private inputs, and without resorting to any trusted third party. However, the public output of the computation inevitably leaks some information about the private inputs. Recent works have introduced a framework and proposed some techniques for quantifying such information flow. Yet, owing to their complexity, those methods do not scale to practical situations that may involve large input spaces. The main contribution of the work reported here is to formally investigate the information flow captured by the min-entropy in the particular case of secure three-party computations of affine functions in order to make its quantification scalable to realistic scenarios. To this end, we mathematically derive an explicit formula for this entropy under uniform prior beliefs about the inputs. We show that this closed-form expression can be computed in time constant in the inputs sizes and logarithmic in the coefficients of the affine function. Finally, we formulate some theoretical bounds for this privacy leak in the presence of non-uniform prior beliefs.

This article is focused on the economic impact assessment of Internet of Things (IoT) and its associated cyber risks vectors and vertices - a reinterpretation of IoT verticals. We adapt to IoT both the Cyber Value at Risk model, a well-established model for measuring the maximum possible loss over a given time period, and the MicroMort model, a widely used model for predicting uncertainty through units of mortality risk. The resulting new IoT MicroMort for calculating IoT risk is tested and validated with real data from the BullGuard's IoT Scanner - over 310,000 scans - and the Garner report on IoT connected devices. Two calculations are developed, the current state of IoT cyber risk and the future forecasts of IoT cyber risk. A lattice of Abrikosov vortices in type II superconductors is characterized by a periodic modulation of the magnetic induction perpendicular to the applied magnetic field. For a coherent vortex motion under the action of a transport current, the magnetic induction at a given point of the sample varies in time with a washboard frequency f_WB = v/d, where v is the vortex velocity and d is the distance between the vortices in the direction of motion. Here, by using a spectrum analyzer connected to a 50 nm-wide Au nanowire meander near the surface of a superconducting Nb film we detect an ac voltage induced by coherently moving fluxons. The voltage is peaked at the washboard frequency, f_WB, and its subharmonics, f_TOF = f_WB/5, determined by the antenna width. By sweeping the dc current value, we reveal that f_WB can be tuned from 100 MHz to 1.5 GHz, thereby demonstrating that patterned normal metal/superconductor nanostructures can be used as dc-tunable generators operating in the radiofrequency range., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

It has been challenging for the technical and regulatory communities to formulate requirements for trustworthiness of the cyber-physical systems (CPS) due to the complexity of the issues associated with their design, deployment, and operations. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), through a public working group, has released a CPS Framework that adopts a broad and integrated view of CPS and positions trustworthiness among other aspects of CPS. This paper takes the model created by the CPS Framework and its further developments one step further, by applying ontological approaches and reasoning techniques in order to achieve greater understanding of CPS. The example analyzed in the paper demonstrates the enrichment of the original CPS model obtained through ontology and reasoning and its ability to deliver additional insights to the developers and operators of CPS., Comment: IET PETRAS 2018 conference

The purpose of Secure Multi-Party Computation is to enable protocol participants to compute a public function of their private inputs while keeping their inputs secret, without resorting to any trusted third party. However, opening the public output of such computations inevitably reveals some information about the private inputs. We propose a measure generalising both Renyi entropy and g-entropy so as to quantify this information leakage. In order to control and restrain such information flows, we introduce the notion of function substitution which replaces the computation of a function that reveals sensitive information with that of an approximate function. We exhibit theoretical bounds for the privacy gains that this approach provides and experimentally show that this enhances the confidentiality of the inputs while controlling the distortion of computed output values. Finally, we investigate the inherent compromise between accuracy of computation and privacy of inputs and we demonstrate how to realise such optimal trade-offs.

The interaction of (quasi)particles with a periodic potential arises in various domains of science and engineering, such as solid-state physics, chemical physics, and communication theory. An attractive test ground to investigate this interaction is represented by superconductors with artificial pinning sites, where magnetic flux quanta (Abrikosov vortices) interact with the pinning potential $U(r) = U(r + R)$ induced by a nanostructure. At a combination of microwave and dc currents, fluxons act as mobile probes of $U(r)$: The ac component shakes the fluxons in the vicinity of their equilibrium points which are unequivocally determined by the local pinning force counterbalanced by the Lorentz force induced by the dc current, linked to the curvature of $U(r)$ which can then be used for a successful fitting of the voltage responses. A good correlation of the deduced dependences $U(r)$ with the cross sections of the nanostructures points to that pinning is primarily caused by vortex length reduction. Our findings pave a new route to a non-destructive evaluation of periodic pinning in superconductor thin films. Building nanotechnological analogues of naturally occurring magnetic structures has proven to be a powerful approach to studying topics like geometry-induced magnetic frustration and to provide model systems for statistical physics. Moreover, it practically allows to engineer novel physical properties by realizing artificial lattice geometries that are not accessible via natural crystallization or chemical synthesis. This has been accomplished with great success in the field of two-dimensional artificial spin ice systems with important branches reaching into the field of magnetic logic devices. Although first proposals have been made to advance into three dimensions (3D), established nanofabrication pathways based on electron beam lithography have not been adapted to obtain free-form 3D nanostructures. Here we demonstrate the direct-write fabrication of freestanding ferromagnetic 3D nano-architectures with full control over the degree of magnetic frustration. By employing micro-Hall sensing, we have determined the magnetic stray field generated by our free-form structures in an externally applied magnetic field and we have performed micromagnetic and macro-spin simulations to deduce the spatial magnetization profiles in the structures and analyze their switching behavior. Furthermore we show that the magnetic 3D elements can be combined with other 3D elements of different chemical composition and intrinsic material properties.

Focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) is a direct-write method for the fabrication of nanostructures whose lateral resolution rivals that of advanced electron lithography but is in addition capable of creating complex three-dimensional nano-architectures. Over the last decade several new developments in FEBID and focused electron beam induced processing (FEBIP) have led to a growing number of scientific contributions in solid state physics and materials science based on FEBID-specific materials and particular shapes and arrangements of the employed nanostructures. In this review an attempt is made to give a broad overview of these developments and the resulting contributions in various research fields encompassing mesoscopic physics with nanostructured metals at low temperatures, direct-write of superconductors and nano-granular alloys or intermetallic compounds and their applications, the contributions of FEBID to the field of metamaterials, and the application of FEBID structures for sensing of force or strain, dielectric changes or magnetic stray fields. The very recent development of FEBID towards simulation-assisted growth of complex three-dimensional nano-architectures is also covered. In the review particular emphasis is laid on conceptual clarity in the description of the different developments, which is reflected in the mostly schematic nature of the presented figures, as well as in the recurring final sub-sections for each of the main topics discussing the respective "challenges and perspectives"., Comment: Review

We develop the theory and practice of an approach to modelling and probabilistic inference in causal networks that is suitable when application-specific or analysis-specific constraints should inform such inference or when little or no data for the learning of causal network structure or probability values at nodes are available. Constrained Bayesian Networks generalize a Bayesian Network such that probabilities can be symbolic, arithmetic expressions and where the meaning of the network is constrained by finitely many formulas from the theory of the reals. A formal semantics for constrained Bayesian Networks over first-order logic of the reals is given, which enables non-linear and non-convex optimisation algorithms that rely on decision procedures for this logic, and supports the composition of several constrained Bayesian Networks. A non-trivial case study in arms control, where few or no data are available to assess the effectiveness of an arms inspection process, evaluates our approach. An open-access prototype implementation of these foundations and their algorithms uses the SMT solver Z3 as decision procedure, leverages an open-source package for Bayesian inference to symbolic computation, and is evaluated experimentally., Comment: 43 pages, 18 figures

The flux flow properties of epitaxial niobium films with different pinning strengths are investigated by dc electrical resistance measurements and mapped to results derived within the framework of a theoretical model. Investigated are the cases of weak random pinning in as-grown films, strong random pinning in Ga ion-irradiated films, and strong periodic pinning induced by a nanogroove array milled by focused ion beam. The generic feature of the current-voltage curves of the films consists in instability jumps to the normal state at some instability current density $j^\ast$ as the vortex lattice reaches its critical velocity $v^\ast$. While $v^\ast(B)$ monotonically decreases for as-grown films, the irradiated films exhibit a non-monotonic dependence $v^\ast(B)$ attaining a maximum in the low-field range. In the case of nanopatterned films, this broad maximum is accompanied by a much sharper maximum in both, $v^\ast(B)$ and $j^\ast(B)$, which we attribute to the commensurability effect when the spacing between the vortex rows coincides with the location of the grooves. We argue that the observed behavior of $v^\ast(B)$ can be explained by the pinning effect on the vortex flow instability and support our claims by fitting the experimental data to theoretical expressions derived within a model accounting for the field dependence of the depinning current density., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Supercond. Optimization of Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) supports important decisions in applications such as Chemical Process Engineering. But current solvers have limited ability for deductive reasoning or the use of domain-specific theories, and the management of integrality constraints does not yet exploit automated reasoning tools such as SMT solvers. This seems to limit both scalability and reach of such tools in practice. We therefore present a tool, ManyOpt, for MINLP optimization that enables experimentation with reduction techniques which transform a MINLP problem to feasibility checking realized by an SMT solver. ManyOpt is similar to the SAT solver ManySAT in that it runs a specified number of such reduction techniques in parallel to get the strongest result on a given MINLP problem. The tool is implemented in layers, which we may see as features and where reduction techniques are feature vectors. Some of these features are inspired by known MINLP techniques whereas others are novel and specific to SMT. Our experimental results on standard benchmarks demonstrate the benefits of this approach. The tool supports a variety of SMT solvers and is easily extensible with new features, courtesy of its layered structure. We propose the formal study of governed blockchains that are owned and controlled by organizations and that neither create cryptocurrencies nor provide any incentives to solvers of cryptographic puzzles. We view such approaches as frameworks in which system parts, such as the cryptographic puzzle, may be instantiated with different technology. Owners of such a blockchain procure puzzle solvers as resources they control, and use a mathematical model to compute optimal parameters for the cryptographic puzzle mechanism or other parts of the blockchain. We illustrate this approach with a use case in which blockchains record hashes of financial process transactions to increase their trustworthiness and that of their audits. For Proof of Work as cryptographic puzzle, we develop a detailed mathematical model to derive MINLP optimization problems for computing optimal Proof of Work configuration parameters that trade off potentially conflicting aspects such as availability, resiliency, security, and cost in this governed setting. We demonstrate the utility of such a mining calculus by solving some instances of this problem. This experimental validation is strengthened by statistical experiments that confirm the validity of random variables used in formulating our mathematical model. Partial methods play an important role in formal methods and beyond. Recently such methods were developed for parity games, where polynomial-time partial solvers decide the winners of a subset of nodes. We investigate here how effective polynomial-time partial solvers can be by studying interactions of partial solvers based on generic composition patterns that preserve polynomial-time computability. We show that use of such composition patterns discovers new partial solvers - including those that merge node sets that have the same but unknown winner - by studying games that composed partial solvers can neither solve nor simplify. We experimentally validate that this data-driven approach to refinement leads to polynomial-time partial solvers that can solve all standard benchmarks of structured games. The interplay between vortex guiding and the Hall effect in superconducting Nb films with periodically arranged nanogrooves is studied via four-probe measurements in standard and Hall configurations and accompanying theoretical modeling. The nanogrooves are milled by focused ion beam and induce a symmetric pinning potential of the washboard type. The resistivity tensor of the films is determined in the limit of small current densities at temperatures close to the critical temperature for the fundamental matching configuration of the vortex lattice with respect to the pinning nanolandscape. The angle between the current direction with respect to the grooves is set at seven fixed values between $0^\circ$ and $90^\circ$. A sign change is observed in the temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity $\rho_\perp^-$ of as-grown films in a narrow temperature range near $T_c$. By contrast, for all nanopatterned films $\rho_\perp^-$ is nonzero in a broader temperature range below $T_c$, allowing us to discriminate between two contributions in $\rho_\perp^-$, namely one contribution originating from the guided vortex motion and the other one caused by the Hall anomaly just as in as-grown Nb films. All four measured resistivity components are successfully fitted to analytical expressions derived within the framework of a stochastic model of competing isotropic and anisotropic pinning. We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy on in situ cleaved single crystals of $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br with the tunneling direction parallel to the layered structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We introduce a fluxonic metamaterial on the basis of nanopatterned superconducting Nb microstrips and employ it for modulation and synthesis of quantized loss levels in the lower GHz range by a sine-wave quasistatic ac drive. The nanopatterns are uniaxial nanogrooves with identical and different slope steepness, which induce a pinning potential of the washboard type for Abrikosov vortices. For the fundamental matching field, when the location of vortex rows geometrically matches the nanogrooves, the following effects are observed: The forward transmission coefficient $S_{21}(f)$ of the microstrips can be controllably modulated within a range of about $3$\,dB by the ac current. For the sample with symmetric grooves, depending on the choice of the operation point in the current-voltage curve, the shape and the duty cycle of the output signal can be tuned. For the sample with asymmetric grooves, depending on the ac amplitude, a sine-to-triangular or a sine-to-rectangular pulse shape conversion is observed. The possibility of synthesizing quantized loss levels by a serial connection of the two samples with different nanopatterns is exemplified and can be used for the development of multilevel excess-loss-based fluxonic devices., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The film growth of Mn$_3$O$_4$(001) films on Ag(001) up to film thicknesses of almost seven unit cells of Mn$_3$O$_4$ has been monitored using a complementary combination of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The oxide films have been prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. Using NEXAFS, the identity of the Mn oxide has clearly been determined as Mn$_3$O$_4$. For the initial stages of growth, oxide islands with p(2$\times$1) and p(2$\times$2) structures are formed, which are embedded into the substrate. For Mn$_3$O$_4$ coverages up to 1.5 unit cells a p(2$\times$1) structure of the films is visible in STM and LEED. Further increase of the thickness leads to a phase transition of the oxide films resulting in an additional c(2$\times$2) structure with a 45$^\circ$ rotated atomic pattern. The emerging film structures are discussed on the basis of a sublayer model of the Mn$_3$O$_4$ spinel unit cell. While the polarity of the island edges determines the structure of initial islands, the surface energy of thicker layers is remarkably reduced by a film restructuring., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We present a dual cut-off, dc-tunable low-pass microwave filter on a superconducting Nb microstrip with uniaxial asymmetric nanogrooves. The frequency response of the device was measured in the range $300$\,KHz to $14$\,GHz at different temperatures, magnetic fields, and dc current values. The microwave loss is most effectively reduced when the Abrikosov vortex lattice spatially matches the underlying washboard pinning landscape. The forward transmission coefficient $S_{21}(f)$ of the microstrip has a dc-tunable cut-off frequency $f_d$ which notably changes under dc bias reversal, due to the two different slope steepnesses of the pinning landscape. The device's operation principle relies upon a crossover from the weakly dissipative response of vortices at low frequencies when they are driven over the grooves, to the strongly dissipative response at high frequencies when the vortices are oscillating within one groove. The filter's cut-off frequency is the vortex depinning frequency tunable by the dc bias as it diminishes the pinning effect induced by the nanopattern. The reported results unveil an advanced microwave functionality of superconducting films with asymmetric (ratchet) pinning landscapes and are relevant for tuning the microwave loss in superconducting planar transmission lines.

In the majority of cases nanostructures prepared by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) employing an organometallic precursor contain predominantly carbon-based ligand dissociation products. This is unfortunate with regard to using this high-resolution direct-write approach for the preparation of nanostructures for various fields, such as mesoscopic physics, micromagnetism, electronic correlations, spin-dependent transport and numerous applications. Here we present an in-situ cleaning approach to obtain pure Co-FEBID nanostructures. The purification procedure lies in the exposure of heated samples to a H$_2$ atmosphere in conjunction with the irradiation by low-energy electrons. The key finding is that the combination of annealing at $300^\circ$C, H$_2$ exposure and electron irradiation leads to compact, carbon- and oxygen free Co layers down to a thickness of about 20\,nm starting from as-deposited Co-FEBID structures. In addition to this, in temperature-dependent electrical resistance measurements on post-processed samples we find a typical metallic behavior. In low-temperature magneto-resistance and Hall effect measurements we observe ferromagnetic behavior.

Combined microwave and dc electrical transport measurements at low temperatures represent a valuable experimental method in many research areas. In particular, when samples are conventional superconductors, a typical experiment requires a combination of helium temperatures, a wide range of magnetic fields, and the utilization of coaxial lines along with the usual dc wiring. We report on the general design features and the microwave performance of a custom-made low-temperature sample probe, with a measurement bandwidth tested from dc to 20 GHz. Equipped with 6 coaxial cables, a heater, Hall and temperature sensors, the probe fits into a d32 mm shaft. We present our setup, analyze its microwave performance, and describe two representative experiments enabled by this system. The proposed setup will be essential for a systematic study of the dc and ac response of the vortex dynamics in nanopatterned superconductors subject to combined dc and microwave stimuli. Besides, it will be valuable for the investigation of a broad class of nonlinear stochastic systems where a combination of dc and high-frequency ac driving in a wide temperature range is necessary.

Controlling magnetic properties on the nm-scale is essential for basic research in micro-magnetism and spin-dependent transport, as well as for various applications such as magnetic recording, imaging and sensing. This has been accomplished to a very high degree by means of layered heterostructures in the vertical dimension. Here we present a complementary approach that allows for a controlled tuning of the magnetic properties of Co/Pt heterostructures on the lateral mesoscale. By means of in-situ post-processing of Pt- and Co-based nano-stripes prepared by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) we are able to locally tune their coercive field and remanent magnetization. Whereas single Co-FEBID nano-stripes show no hysteresis, we find hard-magnetic behavior for post-processed Co/Pt nano-stripes with coercive fields up to 850 Oe. We attribute the observed effects to the locally controlled formation of the CoPt L1$_{0}$ phase, whose presence has been revealed by transmission electron microscopy., Comment: Accepted for publication in Beilstein J. The half antivortex, a fundamental topological structure which determines magnetization reversal of submicron magnetic devices with domain walls, has been suggested also to play a crucial role in spin torque induced vortex core reversal in circular disks. Here we report on magnetization reversal in circular disks with nanoholes through consecutive metastable states with half antivortices. In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance and broadband susceptibility measurements accompanied by micromagnetic simulations reveal that cobalt disks with two and three linearly arranged nanoholes directed at 45 and 135 degrees with respect to the external magnetic field show reproducible step-like changes in the anisotropic magnetoresistance and magnetic permeability due to transitions between different intermediate states mediated by vortices and half antivortices confined to the dot nanoholes and edges, respectively. Our findings are relevant for the development of multi-hole based spintronic and magnetic memory devices.
