Search

The assembly of galaxy clusters is understood to be a hierarchical process with a continuous accretion of galaxies over time, which increases the cluster size and mass. Late-type galaxies that fall into clusters can undergo ram-pressure stripping, forming extended gas tails within which star formation can happen. The number, location, and tail orientations of such galaxies provide clues about the galaxy infall process, the assembly of the cluster over time, and the consequences of infall for galaxy evolution. Here, we utilise the $\sim$ 0.5 degree diameter circular field of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope to image six galaxy clusters at z < 0.06 that are known to contain jellyfish galaxies. We searched for stripping candidates in the ultraviolet images of these clusters, which revealed 54 candidates showing signs of unilateral extra-planar emission, due to ram-pressure stripping. Seven candidates had already been identified as likely stripping based on optical B-band imaging. We identified 47 new candidates through UV imaging. Spectroscopic redshift information is available for 39 of these candidate galaxies, of which 19 are associated with six clusters. The galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts that are not part of the clusters appear to be within structures at different redshifts identified as additional peaks in the redshift distribution of galaxies, indicating that they might be ram-pressure stripped or disturbed galaxies in other structures along the line of sight. We examine the orbital history of these galaxies based on their location in the position-velocity phase-space diagram and explore a possible connection to the orientation of the tail direction among cluster member candidates. Spiral galaxies undergo strong ram-pressure effects when they fall into the galaxy cluster potential. As a consequence, their gas is stripped to form extended tails within which star formation can happen, giving them the typical jellyfish appearance. The ultraviolet imaging observations of jellyfish galaxies provide an opportunity to understand ongoing star formation in the stripped tails. We report the ultraviolet observations of the jellyfish galaxies JW39, JO60, JO194 and compare with observations in optical continuum and $\mathrm{H}{\alpha}$. We detect knots of star formation in the disk and tails of the galaxies and find that their UV and H$\alpha$ flux are well correlated. The optical emission line ratio maps of these galaxies are used to identify for every region the emission mechanism, due to either star formation, LINER or a mix of the two phenomena. The star-forming regions in the emission line maps match very well with the regions having significant UV flux. The central regions of two galaxies (JW39, JO194) show a reduction in UV flux which coincides with composite or LINER regions in the emission line maps. The galaxies studied here demonstrate significant star formation in the stripped tails, suppressed star formation in the central regions and present a possible case of accelerated quenching happening in jellyfish galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

As part of the VESTIGE survey, a blind narrow-band Ha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT, we discovered 8 massive lenticular galaxies with prominent ionised gas emission features in their inner (few kpc) regions. These features are either ionised gas filaments similar to those observed in cooling flows (2 gal), or thin discs with sizes 0.7

We present a dynamical study of the narrow-line regions in two nearby QSO2s. We construct dynamical models based on detailed photoionization models of the emission-line gas, including the effects of internal dust, to apply to observations of large-scale outflows from these AGNs. We use Mrk 477 and Mrk 34 in order to test our models against recent HST STIS observations of [O III] emission-line kinematics since these AGNs possess more energetic outflows than found in Seyfert galaxies. We find that the outflows within 500 pc are consistent with radiative acceleration of dusty gas, however, the outflows in Mrk 34 are significantly more extended and may not be directly accelerated by radiation. We characterize the properties of X-ray winds found from the expansion of [O III]-emitting gas close to the black hole. We show that such winds possess the kinetic energy density to disturb [O III] gas at 1.8 kpc, and have sufficient energy to entrain the [O III] clouds at 1.2 kpc. Assuming that the X-ray wind possesses the same radial mass distribution as the [O III] gas, we find that the peak kinetic luminosity for this wind is 2% of Mrk 34's bolometric luminosity, which is in the 0.5% - 5% range required by some models for efficient feedback. Our work shows that, although the kinetic luminosity as measured from [O III]-emitting gas is frequently low, X-ray winds may provide more than one order of magnitude higher kinetic power.

Over the last 5 years, UVIT has completed observations of more than 500 proposals with ~ 800 unique pointings. In addition, regular planned monitoring observations have been made and from their analysis various key parameters related to in orbit performance of UVIT have been quantified. The sensitivities of the UV channels have remained steady indicating no effect of potential molecular contamination confirming the adequacy of all the protocols implemented for avoiding contamination. The quality of the PSF through the years confirms adequacy of thermal control measures. The early calibrations obtained during the Performance Verification (PV) phase have been further revised for more subtle effects. These include flat fields and detector distortions with greater precision. The operations of UVIT have also evolved through in orbit experience, e.g. tweaking of operational sequencing, protocol for recovery from bright object detection (BOD) shutdowns, parameters for BOD thresholds, etc. Finally, some effects of charged particle hits on electronics led to opimised strategy for regular resetting. The Near-UV channel was lost in one of such operations. We study the IB(s)m galaxy IC 3476 observed in the context of VESTIGE, a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster. The deep narrow-band (NB) image reveals a very pertubed ionised gas distribution, characterised by a prominent banana-shaped structure in the front of the galaxy formed of giant HII regions crossing the stellar disc, with star forming structures at ~8 kpc from the edges of the stellar disc, detected also in a deep FUV ASTROSAT/UVIT image. This particular morphology indicates that the galaxy is undergoing an almost edge-on ram pressure stripping event. The NB image also shows that the star formation activity is totally quenched in the leading edge of the disc, where the gas has been removed during the interaction. The SED fitting analysis indicates that this quenching episode is very recent (~50 Myr), and roughly corresponds to an increase of the star formation activity in the inner regions with respect to what expected for secular evolution. The analysis of these data, whose angular resolution allows the study of the induced effects of the perturbation down to the scale of individual HII regions, also suggests that the increase of the star formation activity is due to the compression of the gas along the stellar disc of the galaxy, which is able to increase its mean electron density and boost the star formation process producing bright HII regions. The hydrodynamic interaction has deeply perturbed the velocity field of the ionised gas component while leaving unaffected that of the stellar disc. The comparison of the data with hydrodynamic simulations accounting for the different gas phases (atomic, molecular, ionised) consistently indicates that the perturbing event is very recent, once again confirming that ram pressure stripping is a violent phenomenon able to perturb on short timescales the evolution of galaxies in rich environments., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) has been observed with the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) instrument onboard the AstroSat Observatory. The M31 sky area was covered with 19 fields, in multiple UV filters per field, over the period of 2017 to 2019. The entire galaxy was observed in the FUV F148W filter, and more than half observed in the NUV filters. A new calibration and data processing is described which improves the astrometry and photometry of the UVIT data. The high spatial resolution of UVIT ($\simeq$1 arcsec) and new astrometry calibration ($\simeq$0.2 arcsec) allow identification of UVIT sources with stars, star clusters, X-ray sources, and other source types within M31 to a much better level than previously possible. We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long-slit G430M and G750M spectra to analyse the extended [O~III] 5007A emission in a sample of twelve nearby (z < 0.12) luminous (L_bol > 1.6 x 10^45 erg s^-1) QSO2s. The purpose of the study is to determine the properties of the mass outflows of ionised gas and their role in AGN feedback. We measure fluxes and velocities as functions of radial distances. Using Cloudy models and ionising luminosities derived from [O~III] 5007A, we are able to estimate the densities for the emission-line gas. From these results, we derive masses of [O~III]-emitting gas, mass outflow rates, kinetic energies, kinetic luminosities, momenta and momentum flow rates as a function of radial distance for each of the targets. For the sample, masses are several times 10^3 - 10^7 solar masses and peak outflow rates are 9.3 x 10^-3 Msun/yr to 10.3 Msun/yr. The peak kinetic luminosities are 3.4 x 10^-8 to 4.9 x 10^-4 of the bolometric luminosity, which does not approach the 5.0 x 10^-3 - 5.0 x 10^-2 range required by some models for efficient feedback. For Mrk 34, which has the largest kinetic luminosity of our sample, in order to produce efficient feedback there would have to be 10 times more [O~III]-emitting gas than we detected at its position of maximum kinetic luminosity. Three targets show extended [O~III] emission, but compact outflow regions. Results of the initial calibration of the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) were reported earlier by Tandon et al. (2017). The results reported earlier were based on the ground calibration as well as the first observations in orbit. Some additional data from the ground calibration and data from more in-orbit observations have been used to improve the results. In particular, extensive new data from in-orbit observations have been used to obtain (a) new photometric calibration which includes (i) zero-points (ii) flat fields (iii) saturation, (b) sensitivity variations (c) spectral calibration for the near Ultra Violet (NUV; 2000 - 3000 Angstroms) and far Ultra-Violet (FUV; 1300 - 1800 Angstroms) gratings, (d) point spread function and (e) astrometric calibration which included distortion. Some post-merger galaxies are known to undergo a starburst phase that quickly depletes the gas reservoir and turns it into a red-sequence galaxy, though the details are still unclear. Here we explore the pattern of recent star formation in the central region of the post-merger galaxy NGC7252 using high resolution UV images from the UVIT on ASTROSAT. The UVIT images with 1.2 and 1.4 arcsec resolution in the FUV and NUV are used to construct a FUV-NUV colour map of the central region. The FUV-NUV pixel colour map for this canonical post-merger galaxy reveals a blue circumnuclear ring of diameter $\sim$ 10 " (3.2 kpc) with bluer patches located over the ring. Based on a comparison to single stellar population models, we show that the ring is comprised of stellar populations with ages $\lesssim$ 300 Myr, with embedded star-forming clumps of younger age ($\lesssim$ 150Myr). The suppressed star formation in the central region, along with the recent finding of a large amount of ionised gas, leads us to speculate that this ring may be connected to past feedback from a central super-massive black hole that has ionised the hydrogen gas in the central $\sim$ 4" $\sim$ 1.3 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters

Jellyfish are cluster galaxies that experience strong ram-pressure effects that strip their gas. Their H$\alpha$ images reveal ionized gas tails up to 100 kpc, which could be hosting ongoing star formation. Here we report the ultraviolet (UV) imaging observation of the jellyfish galaxy JO201 obtained at a spatial resolution $\sim$ 1.3 kpc. The intense burst of star formation happening in the tentacles is the focus of the present study. JO201 is the "UV-brightest cluster galaxy" in Abell 85 ($z \sim$ 0.056) with knots and streams of star formation in the ultraviolet. We identify star forming knots both in the stripped gas and in the galaxy disk and compare the UV features with the ones traced by H$\alpha$ emission. Overall, the two emissions remarkably correlate, both in the main body and along the tentacles. Similarly, also the star formation rates of individual knots derived from the extinction-corrected FUV emission agree with those derived from the H$\alpha$ emission and range from $\sim$ 0.01 -to- 2.07 $M_{\odot} \, yr^{-1}$. The integrated star formation rate from FUV flux is $\sim$ 15 $M_{\odot} \, yr^{-1}$. The tidal tails of post-merger galaxies exhibit ongoing star formation far from their disks. The study of such systems can be useful for our understanding of gas condensation in diverse environments. The ongoing star formation in the tidal tails of post-merger galaxies can be directly studied from ultraviolet (UV) imaging observations. The post merger galaxy NGC7252 ("Atoms-for-Peace" galaxy) is observed with the Astrosat UV imaging telescope (UVIT) in broadband NUV and FUV filters to isolate the star forming regions in the tidal tails and study the spatial variation in star formation rates. Based on ultraviolet imaging observations, we discuss star formation regions of ages $<$ 200 Myrs in the tidal tails. We measure star formation rates in these regions and in the main body of the galaxy. The integrated star formation rate of NGC7252 (i.e., that in the galaxy and tidal tails combined) without correcting for extinction is found to be 0.81 $\pm$ 0.01 M$_{\odot}$/yr. We show that the integrated star formation rate can change by an order of magnitude if the extinction correction used in star formation rates derived from other proxies are taken into consideration. The star formation rates in the associated tidal dwarf galaxies (NGC7252E, SFR=0.02 M$_{\odot}$/yr and NGC7252NW, SFR=0.03 M$_{\odot}$/yr) are typical of dwarf galaxies in the local Universe. The spatial resolution of the UV images reveals a gradient in star formation within the tidal dwarf galaxy. The star formation rates show a dependence on the distance from the centre of the galaxy. This can be due to the different initial conditions responsible for the triggering of star formation in the gas reservoir that was expelled during the recent merger in NGC7252., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [O III] {\lambda}5007 emission for a sample of 12 nearby (z < 0.12), luminous Type 2 quasars (QSO2s), which we use to measure the extent and kinematics of their AGN-ionized gas. We find the size of the observed [O III] regions scale with luminosity in comparison to nearby, less luminous Seyfert galaxies and radially outflowing kinematics to exist in all targets. We report an average maximum outflow radius of $\sim$600 pc, with gas continuing to be kinematically influenced by the central AGN out to an average radius of $\sim$1130 pc. These findings question the effectiveness of AGN being capable of clearing material from their host bulge in the nearby universe and suggest that disruption of gas by AGN activity may prevent star formation without requiring evacuation. Additionally, we find a dichotomy in our targets when comparing [O III] radial extent and nuclear FWHM, where QSO2s with compact [O III] morphologies typically possess broader nuclear emission-lines., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the UV photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1851 using images acquired with the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the ASTROSAT satellite. PSF-fitting photometric data derived from images in two far-UV (FUV) filters and one near-UV (NUV) filter are used to construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMD), in combination with HST and ground-based optical photometry. In the FUV, we detect only the bluest part of the cluster horizontal branch (HB); in the NUV, we detect the full extent of the HB, including the red HB, blue HB and a small number of RR Lyrae stars. UV variability was detected in 18 RR Lyrae stars, and 3 new variables were also detected in the central region. The UV/optical CMDs are then compared with isochrones of different age and metallicity (generated using Padova and BaSTI models) and synthetic HB (using helium enhanced $Y^2$ models). We are able to identify two populations among the HB stars, which are found to have either an age range of 10-12~Gyr, or a range in Y$_{ini}$ of 0.23 - 0.28, for a metallicity of [Fe/H] =$-$1.2 to $-$1.3. These estimations from the UV CMDs are consistent with those from optical studies. The almost complete sample of the HB stars tend to show a marginal difference in spatial/azimuthal distribution among the blue and red HB stars. The Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is one of the payloads in ASTROSAT, the first Indian Space Observatory. The UVIT instrument has two 375mm telescopes: one for the far-ultraviolet (FUV) channel (1300--1800\AA), and the other for the near-ultraviolet (NUV) channel (2000--3000\AA) and the visible (VIS) channel (3200--5500\AA). UVIT is primarily designed for simultaneous imaging in the two ultraviolet channels with spatial resolution better than 1.8 arcsec, along with provision for slit-less spectroscopy in the NUV and FUV channels.The results of in-orbit calibrations of UVIT are presented in this paper., Comment: Accepted to appear in AJ

The performance of the ultraviolet telescope (UVIT) on-board ASTROSAT is reported. The performance in orbit is also compared with estimates made from the calibrations done on the ground. The sensitivity is found to be within ~15% of the estimates, and the spatial resolution in the NUV is found to exceed significantly the design value of 1.8 arcsec and it is marginally better in the FUV. Images obtained from UVIT are presented to illustrate the details revealed by the high spatial resolution. We use the combined photometric SDSS + GALEX database to look for populations of luminous blue star-forming galaxies. These were initially identified from such a sample at redshifts near 0.4, using SDSS spectra. We make use of the colour index previously defined to separate stars and QSOs, to locate more of these unusual galaxies, to fainter limits. They are found in significant numbers in two different regions of the related colour-magnitude plot. Within these regions, we use the ensemble 7-colour photometry to estimate the populations of blue star-forming galaxies at redshift near 0.4, and at redshift near 1, from a full photometric sample of over half a million, composed mostly of normal galaxies and QSOs., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope on ASTROSAT Satellite mission is a suite of Far Ultra Violet (FUV 130 to 180 nm), Near Ultra Violet (NUV 200 to 300 nm) and Visible band (VIS 320 to 550nm) imagers. ASTROSAT is the first multi wavelength mission of INDIA. UVIT will image the selected regions of the sky simultaneously in three channels and observe young stars, galaxies, bright UV Sources. FOV in each of the 3 channels is about 28 arc-minute. Targeted angular resolution in the resulting UV images is better than 1.8 arc-second (better than 2.0 arc-second for the visible channel). Two identical co-aligned telescopes (T1, T2) of Ritchey-Chretien configuration (Primary mirror of 375 mm diameter) collect celestial radiation and feed to the detector system via a selectable filter on a filter wheel mechanism; gratings are available in filter wheels of FUV and NUV channels for slit-less low resolution spectroscopy. The detector system for each of the 3 channels is generically identical. One of the telescopes images in the FUV channel, while the other images in NUV and VIS channels. Images from VIS channel are also used for measuring drift for reconstruction of images on ground through shift and add algorithm, and to reconstruct absolute aspect of the images. Adequate baffling has been provided for reducing scattered background from the Sun, earth albedo and other bright objects. One time open-able mechanical cover on each telescope also works as a Sun-shield after deployment. We describe calibration data, and discuss performance of the photon-counting flight detectors for the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescopes on the Astrosat observatory. The paper describes dark current, flat field and light-spot images for FUV, NUV, and Visible band detectors at more than one wavelength setting for each. We also report on nominal gain and low-gain operations, full- and sub-window read rates, and non-photon-counting modes of operation, all expected to be used in flight. We derive corrections to the event centroids from the CMOS readout arrays, for different centroid algorithms. We derive spatial resolution values for each detector and plots of point-source signal saturation for different flux levels. We analyse new deep g and i-band imaging with the CFHT of 16 QSOs in the redshift range 0.9 to 1.3. The principal points of interest are the symmetry and signs of tidal effects in the QSO hosts and nearby (`companion') galaxies. The sample measures are compared with similar measures on randomly selected field galaxy samples. Asymmetry measures are made for all objects to g ~22, and magnitudes of all galaxies 2 magnitudes fainter. The QSOs are found in denser environments than the field, and are somewhat offset from the centroid of their surrounding galaxies. The QSO hosts appear more disturbed than other galaxies. While the QSO companions and field galaxies have the same average asymmetry, the distribution of asymmetry values is different. QSO companions within 15 arcsec are fainter than average field galaxies. We present imaging and spectroscopic observations for six quasars at z>5.9 discovered by the Canada-France High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS). The CFHQS contains sub-surveys with a range of flux and area combinations to sample a wide range of quasar luminosities at z~6. The new quasars have luminosities 10 to 75 times lower than the most luminous SDSS quasars at this redshift. The least luminous quasar, CFHQS J0216-0455 at z=6.01, has absolute magnitude M_1450=-22.21, well below the likely break in the luminosity function. This quasar is not detected in a deep XMM-Newton survey showing that optical selection is still a very efficient tool for finding high redshift quasars., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, AJ, in press

We discuss selection of QSO candidates from the combined SDSS and GALEX catalogues. We discuss properties of QSOs within the combined sample, and note uncertainties in number counts and completeness, compared with other SDSS-based samples. We discuss colour and other properties with redshift within the sample and the SEDs for subsets. We estimate the numbers of faint QSOs that are classified as extended objects in the SDSS, and consequent uncertainties that follow., Comment: To appear in PASP

An asymmetry index is derived from ellipse-fitting to galaxy images, that gives weight to faint outer features and is not strongly redshift-dependent. These measures are made on a sample of 13 2MASS QSOs and their neighbour galaxies, and a control sample of field galaxies from the same wide-field imaging data. The QSO host galaxy asymmetries correlate well with visual tidal interaction indices previously published. The companion galaxies have somewhat higher asymmetry than the control galaxy sample, and their asymmetry is inversely correlated with distance from the QSO. The distribution of QSO-companion asymmetry indices is different from that for matched control field galaxies at the $\sim95%$ significance level. We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 using UV spectra from the HST/STIS and FUSE, obtained 2002 May as part of a set of contemporaneous observations that included Chandra/HETGS spectra. In our analysis of the Chandra spectra, we determined that the soft X-ray absorber was the source of the saturated UV lines of O VI, C IV, and N V associated with the absorption feature at a radial velocity of ~ -500 km/sec, which we referred to as component D+E. In the present work, we have derived tighter constrains on the the line-of-sight covering factors, densities, and radial distances of the absorbers. We find that the Equivalent Widths (EWs) of the low-ionization lines associated with D+E varied over the period from 1999 July to 2002 May. The drop in the EWs of these lines between 2001 April and 2002 May are suggestive of bulk motion of gas out of our line-of-sight. If these lines from these two epochs arose in the same sub-component, the transverse velocity of the gas is ~ 2100 km/sec. Transverse velocities of this order are consistent with an origin in a rotating disk, at the roughly radial distance we derived for D+E., Comment: 51 pages, including 12 figures. We have obtained optical imaging with the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) of 21 2MASS-selected QSOs of redshift greater than 0.3. This paper complements the sample of lower redshift 2MASS QSOs previously published. The QSOs have higher overall and nuclear luminosity, bluer colours, and higher ratio of nuclear to host flux than the lower redshift sample. We present HST spectroscopy of the nucleus of M31 obtained with STIS. Spectra taken around the CaT lines at 8500 see only the red giants in the double bright- ness peaks P1 and P2. In contrast, spectra taken at 3600-5100 A are sensitive to the tiny blue nucleus embedded in P2, the lower surface brightness red nucleus. P2 has a K-type spectrum, but the embedded blue nucleus has an A-type spectrum with strong Balmer absorption lines. Given the small likelihood for stellar collisions, a 200 Myr old starburst appears to be the most plausible origin of the blue nucleus. In stellar population, size, and velocity dispersion, the blue nucleus is so different from P1 and P2 that we call it P3. The line-of-sight velocity distributions of the red stars in P1+P2 strengthen the support for Tremaine s eccentric disk model. The kinematics of P3 is consistent with a circular stellar disk in Keplerian rotation around a super-massive black hole with M_bh = 1.4 x 10^8 M_sun. The P3 and the P1+P2 disks rotate in the same sense and are almost coplanar. The observed velocity dispersion of P3 is due to blurred rotation and has a maximum value of sigma = 1183+-201 km/s. The observed peak rotation velocity of P3 is V = 618+-81 km/s at radius 0.05" = 0.19 pc corresponding to a circular rotation velocity at this radius of ~1700 km/s. Any dark star cluster alternative to a black hole must have a half-mass radius <= 0.03" = 0.11 pc. We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic X-ray absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 using Chandra/HETGS data obtained 2002 May, as part of a program which included simultaneous UV spectra using HST/STIS and FUSE. NGC 4151 was in a relatively low flux state during the observations reported here, although roughly 2.5 times as bright in the 2 --10 keV band as during a Chandra observation in 2000. The soft X-ray band was dominated by emission lines, which show no discernible variation in flux between the two observations. The 2002 data show the presence of a very highly ionized absorber, in the form of H-like and He-like Mg, Si, and S lines, as well as lower ionization gas via the presence of inner-shell absorption lines from lower-ionization species of these elements. The former is too highly ionized to be radiatively accelerated in a sub-Eddington source such as NGC 4151. We find that the lower ionization gas had a column density a factor of ~ 3 higher during the 2000 observation. If due to bulk motion, we estimate that this component must have a velocity of more than 1250 km/sec transverse to our line-of-sight. Using The Hubble Space Telescope's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph HST's STIS, observations of the OIII emission from the narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 4151 were obtained and radial velocities determined. Five orbits of HST time were used to obtain spectra at five parallel slit configurations, at a position angle of 58 degrees, with spatial resolution 0.2 arcseconds across and 0.1 arcseconds along each slit. A spectral resolving power of ~ 9,000 with the G430M grating gave velocity measurements accurate to ~ 34 km/s. A kinematic model was generated to match the radial velocities, for comparison to previous kinematic models of biconical radial outflow developed for low-dispersion spectra at two slit positions. The new high-resolution spectra permit the measurement of accurate velocity dispersions for each radial-velocity component. The full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) reaches a maximum of 1000 km/s near the nucleus, and generally decreases with increasing distance to about 100 km/s in the extended narrow-line region (ENLR), starting at about 6 arcseconds from the nucleus. In addition to the bright emission knots, which generally fit our model, there are faint high velocity clouds which do not fit the biconical outflow pattern of our kinematic model. These faint clouds occur at the turnover points of the outflowing bright clouds. We suggest possible scenarios that could explain these rogue clouds: (1) backflow resulting from shocks and (2) outflow outside of the bicones, although the latter does not explain how the knots are ionized and accelerated. A comparison of our observations with a high-resolution radio map shows that there is no evidence that the kinematics of the NLR clouds are affected by the radio lobes that comprise the inner jet., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures (some color), accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. FUSE observations were obtained in July 2003 during 1.2 cycles of the 0.76-day binary orbit of RX J0513.9-6951. Radial velocity measurements of the broad O VI emission profile show a semiamplitude of K~26 km/sec, which is much smaller than the value of 117 km/sec measured from 2001 FUSE data. Narrow O VI emissions show no measurable velocity variation. The mean velocity of the broad O VI emission is red-shifted by ~500 km/sec with respect to both the systemic and narrow emission-line velocities. Spectral difference plots show phase-related changes in the broad emission profile. Other phase-related changes such as line and continuum variations are also smaller than in the 2001 spectra. We describe a moving broad absorption feature near 1020A as possible O VI outflow associated with a precessing jet. We present slitless spectra of 10 Seyfert galaxies observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The spectra cover the [OIII] 4959, 5007 emission lines at a spectral resolving power of ~9000 and a spatial resolution of 0.1". We compare the slitless spectra with previous HST narrow-band images to determine the velocity shifts and dispersions of the bright emission-line knots in the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of these Seyferts. Many knots are spatially resolved with sizes of tenths of arcsecs, corresponding to tens of pcs, and yet they appear to move coherently with radial velocities between zero and +/- 1200 km/s with respect to the systemic velocities of their hostgalaxies. The knots also show a broad range in velocity dispersion, ranging from ~30 km/s (the velocity resolution) to ~1000 km/s FWHM. Most of the Seyfert galaxies in this sample show an organized flow pattern, with radial velocities near zero at the nucleus (defined by the optical continuum peak) and increasing to maximum blueshifts and redshifts within ~1'' of the nucleus, followed by a decline to the systemic velocity. The emission-line knots also follow a general trend of decreasing velocity dispersion with increasing distance. In the Seyfert 2 galaxies, the presence of blueshifts and redshifts on either side of the nucleus indicates that rotation alone cannot explain the observed radial velocities, and that radial outflow plays an important role. Each of the Seyfert galaxies in this sample (with the exception of Mrk 3) shows a bright, compact (FWHM < 0.5") [O III] knot at the position of its optical nucleus. A new ephemeris has been determined for the supersoft X-ray binary CAL 83 using MACHO photometry. With an improved orbital period of 1.047568 days, it is now possible to phase together photometric and spectroscopic data obtained over the past two decades with new far ultraviolet spectra taken with FUSE. We discuss the properties of the orbital and longterm optical light curves as well as the colors of CAL 83. In the far ultraviolet the only well-detected stellar feature is emission from the O VI resonance doublet. The radial velocity of this emission appears to differ from that of HeII in the optical region, although we only have partial phase coverage for the O VI line. The FUSE continuum variations are similar to the optical light curve in phase and amplitude., Comment: 21 pages and 7 figures

Far-ultraviolet spectra of LMC X-3 were taken covering photometric phases 0.47 to 0.74 in the 1.7-day orbital period of the black-hole binary (phase zero being superior conjunction of the X-ray source). The continuum is faint and flat, but appears to vary significantly during the observations. Concurrent RXTE/ASM observations show the system was in its most luminous X-ray state during the FUSE observations. The FUV spectrum contains strong terrestrial airglow emission lines, while the only stellar lines clearly present are emissions from the O VI resonance doublet. Their flux does not change significantly during the FUSE observations. These lines are modelled as two asymmetrical profiles, including the local ISM absorptions due to C II and possibly O VI. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [OIII] emission for a sample of 60 Seyfert galaxies (22 Seyfert 1's and 38 Seyfert 2's), selected based on their far infrared properties. The observations for 42 of these galaxies were done in a snapshot survey with WFPC2. The remaining 18 were obtained from the HST archive, most of which were observed with the same configuration. These observations cover 68% of the objects in the sample defined by Kinney et al. (2000), and create a valuable dataset for the study of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) properties of Seyfert galaxies. In this paper, we present the details of the observations, reductions, and measurements. We also discuss the extended structure of individual sources, and the relation of this emission to the radio and host galaxy morphology. We also address how representative the subsample of [O III]-imaged galaxies is of the entire sample, and possible selection effects that may affect this comparison of the properties of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies., Comment: 27 pages including 14 figures, to appear in ApJS October 2003

We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [OIII] emission in a sample of 60 nearby Seyfert galaxies (22 Seyfert 1's and 38 Seyfert 2's), selected by mostly isotropic properties. The comparison between the semi major axis size of their [OIII] emitting regions (R_Maj) shows that Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's have similar distributions, which seems to contradict Unified Model predictions. We discuss possible ways to explain this result, which could be due either to observational limitations or the models used for the comparison with our data. We show that Seyfert 1 Narrow Line Regions (NLR's) are more circular and concentrated than Seyfert 2's, which can be attributed to foreshortening in the former. We find a good correlation between the NLR size and luminosity, following the relation R_Maj propto L([OIII])^0.33, which is flatter than a previous one found for QSO's and Seyfert 2's. We discuss possible reasons for the different results, and their implications to photoionization models. We confirm previous results which show that the [OIII] and radio emission are well aligned, and also find no correlation between the orientation of the extended [OIII] emission and the host galaxy major axis. This agrees with results showing that the torus axis and radio jet are not aligned with the host galaxy rotation axis, indicating that the orientation of the gas in the torus, and not the spin of the black hole, determine the orientation of the accretion disk, and consequently the orientation of the radio jet., Comment: 17 pages including 12 figures, to appear in ApJ

We present and discuss optical imaging of 76 AGN which represent the 2MASS-selected sample for z<0.3, from a full list of 243. They are found to have dust-obscured nuclei, residing in host galaxies that show a high fraction (>70%) of tidal interactions. The derived luminosities of the AGN and host galaxies are similar to traditionally-selected AGN, and they may comprise some 40% of the total AGN population at low redshift. We have measured a number of host galaxy properties, and discuss their distributions and interrelations. Imaging and spectra of the lensed QSO pair 0957+561 are presented and discussed. The data are principally those from the STIS NUV MAMA, and cover rest wavelengths from 850A to 1350A. The QSOs are both extended over about 1 arcsec, with morphology that matches with a small rotation, and includes one feature aligned with the VLBI radio jets. This is the first evidence of lensed structure in the host galaxy. The off-nuclear spectra arise from emission line gas and a young stellar population. The gas has velocity components with radial velocities at least 1000 km/s with respect to the QSO BLR, and may be related to the damped Ly alpha absorber in the nuclear spectra., Comment: 12 pages, including 1 table, plus 6 figures. We obtained far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 using the FUSE on 1999 December 6. Our spectra cover the wavelength range 990-1187 A with a resolution of 0.05 A. We see broad emission lines of CIII, NIII, OVI, and HeII as well as intrinsic absorption lines in the OVI 1032,1038 resonance doublet. The absorption arises in two distinct kinematic components at systemic velocities of -569 km/s and -1898 km/s. Both components are very highly ionized- no significant Ly beta absorption is present. The higher blueshift component is not quite saturated, and it has a total OVI column density of 8e14/cm2. It covers more than 90% of the continuum and broad-line emission. The lower blue shift component is heavily saturated and covers only 50% of the continuum and broad-line emission. It too has a column density of 8e14/cm2, but this is less certain due to the high saturation. We set an upper limit of <1.5e18/cm2 on the OVI column density of this component. Its line depth is consistent with coverage of only the continuum, and thus this component may lie interior to the broad emission-line gas. The component at -569 km/s has a velocity comparable to the high-ionization X-ray absorption lines seen in the XMM-Newton grating spectrum of NGC 7469, and photoionization models show that the observed column densities of OVI and HI are compatible with their formation in the same gas as that causing the X-ray absorption. The gas at -1898 km/s has lower ionization and column density, and no significant X-ray absorption is associated with it., Comment: To appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 8 pages, 2 color PostScript figures. 2 micron broad- and narrow-band imaging with the Gemini-N telescope of five z~4.7 QSOs, has resolved both the host galaxies and [O II] emission-line gas. The resolved fluxes of the host galaxies fall within the extrapolated spread of the K-z relationship for radio galaxies at lower redshifts, and their resolved morphology is irregular. The [O II] images indicate knots coincident with many continuum features and also some bright jet-like features near the nucleus. The line emission total fluxes indicate overall equivalent widths of 5 to 10 A at rest wavelengths. Two of the QSOs are in a local environment of faint galaxies of similar magnitude to the hosts, and three have nearby galaxies with excess narrow-band flux, which would be [O II] if they are at the QSO redshift., Comment: 18 pages, including 2 tables. 5 diagrams. We use a Sobolev with Exact Integration model to analyze the winds lines of 25 LMC O stars. The data include FUSE profiles of C III, N III, S IV, P V, S VI, and O VI and IUE or HST data for Si IV, C IV, and N V. Several of the FUSE lines are unsaturated, so meaningful optical depths (equivalently, mass loss rate times ionization fractions), as a function of wind velocity can be determined. Ratios of these quantities give the relative ionization as a function of velocity and demonstrate that, except for O VI in all stars and S VI in the later stars, the wind ionization shifts toward lower stages at higher velocity. Because O VI and S VI do not behave like the other ions, they must be produced by a different mechanism. Using mass-loss rates determined from the Vink et al. relationships, we derive mean ionization fractions. Because these are all less than one, the derived mass loss rates cannot be too small. However, the ion fractions for P V (expected to be dominant in some winds), never exceed 0.20. This implies that either the calculated mass loss rates or the assumed P abundances are too large, or the winds are strongly clumped. We examine correlations between the mean ion fractions and stellar parameters, and find two significant relationships. First, as expected, the mean ionization fraction of lower ions decreases with increasing temperature. Second, the mean ionization fraction of S VI in the latest stars and O VI in all stars increases with terminal velocity, re-affirming Cassinelli and Olson's conjecture that O VI is produced non-radiatively. Spectra taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) allow accurate location and extraction of the nuclear spectrum of NGC 4151, with minimal contamination by extended line emission and circumnuclear starlight. Spectra since 1997 show that the P Cygni Balmer and He I absorption seen previously in low nuclear states, is present in higher states, with outflow velocity that changes with the nuclear flux. We have analyzed nearly eight years of MACHO optical photometry of the supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9-6951 and derived a revised orbital period and ephemeris. Previously published velocities are reinterpreted using the new ephemeris. We show that the spectroscopic characteristics of the system depend strongly on whether the system is in a high or low optical state. We also discuss the properties of the source's high/low optical states and its long-term light curve. We have obtained spectroscopy with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) of the supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9-6951 over a complete binary orbital cycle. The spectra show a hot continuum with extremely broad O VI emission and weak Lyman absorptions. He II emission is weak and narrow, while N III and C III emissions are undetected, although lines from these ions are prominent at optical wavelengths. The broad O VI emission and Lyman absorption show radial velocity curves that are approximately antiphased and have semiamplitudes of ~117 +- 40 and 54 +- 10 km/s, respectively. Narrow emissions from He II and O VI show small velocity variations with phasing different from the broad O VI, but consistent with the optical line peaks. We also measure considerable changes in the FUV continuum and O VI emission line flux. An atlas of far-ultraviolet spectra of 45 Galactic OB stars observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer is presented. The atlas covers the wavelength region between 912 and 1185A with an effective spectral resolution of 0.12A. Systematic trends in the morphology and strength of stellar features are discussed. Particular attention is drawn to the variations of the CIII$\lambda$1176, SIV$\lambda\lambda$1063, 1073, and PV$\lambda\lambda$1118, 1128 line profiles as a function of temperature and luminosity class; and the lack of a luminosity dependence associated with OVI$\lambda\lambda$1032, 1038.
