Abstract

A multidisciplinary endocrinopathy affecting women in their reproductive years, polycystic ovarian syndrome, causes insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, cardiovascular issues, obesity, and menstrual difficulties. Cuminum cyminum (cumin seed) is a famous spice traditionally used for various ailments such as indigestion, headache, diarrhea, obesity, and gynecological disorders. This study explored the pharmacological potential of aqueous ethanolic extract of Cuminum cyminum (AECC) in letrozole‐induced PCOS animals, which were also obese. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid (HB acid), caffeic acid, vanillic acid, kaempferol, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, salicylic acid, coumarin, quercetin, benzoic acid, rutin, and p‐coumaric acid. Thirty adult female rats were divided into six groups (5 animals in each group). PCOS was induced by using letrozole (1 mg/kg). The groups were normal control, diseased control, standard (metformin, 20 mg/kg), and AECC (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg). Vaginal smear cytology was used to confirm the PCOS. The animals were euthanized after 12 weeks, and blood was drawn for hormonal and biochemical study. We used isoflurane 5% for euthanasia in a closed chamber. The ovaries were removed for histopathology. Ovarian histopathology showed abnormalities with cystic follicles in PCOS female rats. It also produced hyperinsulinemia, LH surge, lower FSH, perturbed LH/FSH ratio, and higher levels of testosterone and weight gain. Moreover, it also produced oxidative stress with ROS (reactive oxygen species) production. Meanwhile, AECC treatment converted cystic follicles into primary, secondary, and differentiating follicles with healthy granulosa cells and corpus luteum with significant (p < 0.001) weight loss. AECC significantly (p < 0.001) reduced serum insulin levels and normalized LH/FSH ratio, with improved FSH levels and control of LH surge. AECC also reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation with significant (p < 0.001) improvement of antioxidant markers. It has been concluded that AEEC can alleviate PCOS symptoms by improving insulin resistance, reducing weight, addressing hyperandrogenism, regulating the LH/FSH ratio, and overcoming oxidative stress and ROS production. 13. Flow Performance Enhancement of a Fluidic Oscillator Through the Integration of Rectangular Ribs on Coanda Surface.

Abstract

Fluidic oscillators utilize internal flow dynamics to produce oscillatory fluid jets. The Coanda surface in the mixing chamber of a fluidic oscillator plays a critical role by facilitating controlled fluid manipulation through flow attachment and redirection. The mixing chamber pressure drop, jet oscillating frequency, and deflection angles are hence dependent on the geometry of the Coanda surface. In this study, the Coanda surface is modified by using rectangular ribs of different aspect ratios. The effects of ribbed Coanda surface on oscillating jet characteristics are computed numerically through two-dimensional unsteady Favre-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The aspect ratio (ARribs ), the ratio of rib height to rib base, is varied from 0.64 to 1.56 and air is used as a working fluid. An increase in the ARribs increases the jet oscillation frequency. The highest aspect ratio achieves an oscillation frequency of 820 Hz, contrasting with 355 Hz for the smooth case. On the other hand, the jet deflection angles are decreased as the aspect ratio increases. Interestingly the introduction of the ribs on the Coanda surface decreased the pressure drop in the oscillator. A decrease in pressure drop of 22% for an aspect ratio of 1.56 was achieved as compared to the smooth case. These results are attributed to the influence of the ribs on the formation of a separation bubble formed in the mixing chamber. The jet performance parameter, frequency-deflection-pressure ratio, was found to be 43% higher for ARribs of 1.56 as compared to the smooth case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Qabil Ajmeri (an Urdu poet) once wrote: وقت کرتاهے پرورش برسوں حادثہ ایک دم نہيں ھوتا Translation: Time nurtures for years Accident is never sudden Same is true for disasters; they just don’t happen suddenly. It is our actions (or inaction in certain cases) over the years that turn a hazard into a disaster. Development policies, governance system, disaster management system, poverty, and level of hazard are some of the most important factors that contribute towards disaster vulnerability. Most of the developing countries suffer higher disaster losses (as compared to the developed countries) due to their inability to properly address these factors. Societies need to have better development policies, good governance, efficient disaster management system, and improved livelihoods to minimise disaster vulnerability. Conducted from the positionality (Robinson 2014) of a victim of the earthquake and an important functionary of the post-2005 earthquake reconstruction programme in AJK, this research is an auto-ethnographic study in order to understand how societies become vulnerable to natural disasters and what role post-disaster housing reconstruction can play in addressing this vulnerability. By loosely following Blaikie et al.’s (1994) ‘Pressure and Release’ (PAR) model and Collins’ (2009) “disaster and development approach”, this research attempts to find what factors made people vulnerable to seismic hazard in AJK and turned an otherwise not so big Mw=7.6 earthquake into one of the deadliest environmental disasters in the world. The performance and impact of the post-2005 earthquake housing reconstruction program is evaluated in this study by using the mixed-methods research approach. The study finds that the sustainability of the seismic resistant construction and continuation of the pre-earthquake vulnerability factors are still issues. Till the time issues mentioned in this study are not addressed properly, communities in general and the study area in particular will remain vulnerable to environmental disasters.

23. The experimental and theoretical analysis of pipe contraction flow fields

Abstract

The accurate prediction of pipe contraction pressure loss is important in the design of pipe system such as heat exchangers, particularly when close control of the flow distribution in a network of pipes is required. The prediction of contraction pressure loss depends heavily on experimental data. Large discrepancies in these predictions are evident in the literature. Experimental results giving pres!? re loss coef fici ents for a range of Reyno 1 ds numbers of 4x 10 -2x 10 and area ratios of 0.135 - 0.692 are presented and compared with predictions from a method developed that allows for velocity profile variation through the contraction. The results show a Reynolds number dependence and good agreement between predicted and measured values. It is also important to be able to predict the variation of pressure loss coefficient with variations in the small-bore inlet geometry, referred to as the inlet sharpness. There are no know experimental data for the effects of inlet sharpness on the pipe contraction loss coefficient, but there are data for intakes set flush in a plane wall which are used as approximations. Experimental data showing the variation of pressure loss coefficient with inlet sharpness up to 13.4% are presented and compared with approximate data. The comparison shows significant differences. A three beam laser doppler anemmeter has been used to measure the detailed flow field for an area ratio of 0.332 and a Reynolds number of 153.8 x 10. The mean velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds stress distributions are presented for twenty-two axial stations between four large-bore diameters upstream to fourteen small-bore diameters downstream of the contraction. These experimental measurements are compared with computer predictions using the FLUENT code with the k-e- turbulence model. The general trends in the flow are predicted, however there are significant differences in the detailed flow field which are highlighted.

This injury may be oxidative or inflammatory induced by numerous factors including alcohol, pathogens and xenobiotics. This scientific study was planned to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant potential of p-coumaric acid (p-CA) on Lipopolysaccharide/D-Galactosamine (LPS/D-GalN) induced liver injury.Methods: DPPH analysis, reducing power assay and HPLC analysis were performed during in-vitro studies of p-CA. Similarly, in-vivo experiments were performed using Wistar Albino rats. Normal control and intoxicated group received (5mL/kg normal saline p.o), standard treatment groups received ascorbic acid (100mg/kg p.o) and silymarin (25mg/kg p.o), while p-CA treatment groups received (100mg/kg p.o) for 28-days. After completion of 28-days, LPS/D-GalN injection (300 mg D-GalN/kg and 10 μg LPS/kg i.p.) was given at 6th, 12th and 24-hours to all groups except normal control group. Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common, complex, and heterogeneous endocrine disorder of women that involves a combination of environmental and genetic factors. PCOS affects women of growing age particularly at the early to late reproductive stage (15-35 years). Currently, PCOS affects 1 in every 10 women worldwide. It is characterized majorly by a raised level of androgens such as testosterone and a large number of ovarian cysts (more than 10) that cause anovulation, infertility, and irregular menstrual cycle. PCOS is also related to other endocrine and metabolic abnormalities, such as obesity, hirsutism, acne, diabetes, insulin resistance, and glucose impairment. PCOS can be treated with allopathic, ayurvedic, and natural or herbal medications along with lifestyle modifications. Herbal medicines remained in demand for numerous reasons such as high cost and side effects associated with the use of allopathic medicine and our traditional norms, which have helped humans to use more herbal products for their health benefits. Estrogenic and nonestrogenic phytochemicals present in various plant species such as Glycyrrhiza glabra L. [Fabaceae], Aloe vera (L.) Burm. f. [Asphodelaceae], Silybum marianum (L.). Gaertn. [Asteraceae], Serenoa repens (W.Bartram) Small [Arecaceae], Actaea racemosa L. [Ranunculaceae], and Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels [Apiaceae] are effective and harmless. Herbal medicines are found to be cost-effective, efficacious, and a highly esteemed source of management/treatment for PCOS than allopathic medicines. In this literature review, diagnosis, signs, and symptoms of PCOS; causes of hormonal imbalance; and risk factors associated with PCOS and their management are discussed briefly, and the focus was to find out the role of herbal remedies in PCOS management.

Abstract

The development of the embryonic lung demands complex endodermal-mesodermal interactions, which are regulated by a variety of signaling proteins. Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is vital for lung development. It plays a key regulatory role during several morphogenic mechanisms, such as cell growth, differentiation, migration, and persistence of cells. On the other hand, abnormal expression or loss of regulation of Hh signaling leads to airway asthmatic remodeling, which is characterized by cellular matrix modification in the respiratory system, goblet cell hyperplasia, deposition of collagen, epithelial cell apoptosis, proliferation, and activation of fibroblasts. Hh also targets some of the pathogens and seems to have a significant function in tissue repairment and immune-related disorders. Similarly, aberrant Hh signaling expression is critically associated with the etiology of a variety of other airway lung diseases, mainly, bronchial or tissue fibrosis, lung cancer, and pulmonary arterial hypertension, suggesting that controlled regulation of Hh signaling is crucial to retain healthy lung functioning. Moreover, shreds of evidence imply that the Hh signaling pathway links to lung organogenesis and asthmatic airway remodeling. Here, we compiled all up-to-date investigations linked with the role of Hh signaling in the development of lungs as well as the attribution of Hh signaling in impairment of lung expansion, airway remodeling, and immune response. In addition, we included all current investigational and therapeutic approaches to treat airway asthmatic remodeling and immune system pathway diseases.
