4. Assessment of the Turbine Location for Optimum Performance of the Solar Vortex Engine as a Replacement to the Tall Chimney Solar Updraft Power Plant Design

The solar vortex engine (SVE) aims to replace the tall and expensive chimney structure in solar updraft power plants by a shorter less expensive structure named the vortex generator. In this study, the entire SVE system is simulated by CFD to determine the appropriate location for the turbine unit as well as prove the capability of the vortex generator in replacing the chimney. Three different cases for the SVE are considered and compared to corresponding cases of the solar chimney power plant (SCPP). Results revealed that the optimum turbine location is at the outlet hole of the vortex generator. An updraft air velocity of 1.82 m/s was achieved at the outlet hole, compared to 1.56 m/s at the base of a solar chimney with the same diameter as the upper hole. The consideration of the turbine pressure drop did not affect the formation and preservation of the air vortex. So, the 1 m high vortex generator successfully replaced the 8.6 m chimney component in solar updraft power plants, greatly reducing the cost and construction complexity of the plant. The vortex generator accelerated the air delivered from the solar collector, increasing its velocity by 14 times. The SVE’s power output is directly proportional to the static pressure drop across the turbine. The mean difference values along the air vortex field between the cases with and without a turbine are 0.67 Pa and 0.026 m/s for the static pressure drop and velocity magnitude, respectively.

Abstract Background This study aimed to assess the knowledge and current practice of using the airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) mode with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients and identify barriers to not using this mode of ventilation among nurses who work in critical areas in Saudi Arabia. Methods Between December 2022 and April 2023, a cross-sectional online survey was disseminated to nurses working in critical care areas in Saudi Arabia. The characteristics of the respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Percentages and frequencies were used to report categorical variables. Results Overall, 1,002 nurses responded to the online survey, of whom 592 (59.1%) were female. Only 248 (24.7%) nurses had ever used APRV mode, whereas only 229 (22.8%) received training on APRV mode. Moreover, 602 (60.0%) nurses did not know whether APRV was utilized in their hospital. Additionally, 658 (65.6%) nurses did not know whether APRV mode was managed using a standard protocol. Prone positioning was the highest recommended intervention by 444 (43.8%) when a conventional MV failed to improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS. 323 (32.2%) respondents stated that the P-high should be set equal to the plateau pressure on a conventional ventilator, while 400 (39.9%) said that the P-low should match PEEP from a conventional ventilator. Almost half of the respondents (446, 44.5%) stated that the T-high should be set between 4 and 6 s, while 415 (41.4%) said that the T-low should be set at 0.4 to 0.8 s. Over half of the nurses (540, 53.9%) thought that the maximum allowed tidal volume during the release phase should be 4–6 ml/kg. Moreover, 475 (47.4%) believed that the maximum allowed P-high setting should be 35 cm H2O. One-third of the responders (329, 32.8%) stated that when weaning patients with ARDS while in APRV mode, the P-high should be reduced gradually to reach a target of 10 cm H2O. However, 444 (44.3%) thought that the T-high should be gradually increased to reach a target of 10 s. Half of the responders (556, 55.5%) felt that the criteria to switch the patient to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) were for the patient to have an FiO2 ≤ 0.4, P-high ≤ 10 cm H2O, and T-high ≥ 10 s. Lack of training was the most common barrier to not using APRV by 615 (61.4%). Conclusion The majority of nurses who work in critical care units have not received sufficient training in APRV mode. A significant discrepancy was observed regarding the clinical application and management of APRV parameters. Inadequate training was the most frequently reported barrier to the use of APRV in patients with ARDS.

6. Critical interpretation and analysis to correlate the canopy height to collector diameter ratio for optimized design of solar chimney power plants

The collector's periphery height determines the entrance size to the solar chimney power plant. There is inconsistency in the published experimental and numerical results on the optimum collector inlet height for different collector diameters. This paper aims to analyze the available data to identify the best collector inlet height-to-diameter ratio and to introduce a design guide for an optimized performance of solar chimney power plants. The experimental data reported in previous works have been clustered and manipulated to produce a comparative argument on the collector inlet height-to-diameter. In addition, a numerical model is developed to support the literature conclusions and to produce further data to decide the optimum collector inlet height-to-diameter ratio. For a 6.6-m collector diameter, four different inlets have been investigated, namely, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 m. The best performance in terms of air velocity and temperature rise is obtained with the 0.05-m inlet height, where it shows an improvement of up to 35.35% compared to the larger inlet heights. The lower collector inlet height allows a more effective heat transfer from the ground and the collector to the air. It is concluded that the optimum collector inlet height-to-diameter design ratio for solar chimneys with collector diameters larger than 3 m is 0.0075±0.0005. For small-scale solar chimney models with less than 3 m collector diameter, the best collector inlet height-to-diameter ratio ranges between 0.015 and 0.03.

We present the electronic and structural properties of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ grown by pulsed-laser deposition on monolayer graphene (MLG) on SiC. The spin splitting in the WSe$_{2}$ valence band at $\overline{\mathrm{K}}$ was $\Delta_\mathrm{SO}=0.469\pm0.008$ eV by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Synchrotron-based grazing-incidence in-plane X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the in-plane lattice constant of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ to be $a_\mathrm{WSe_2}=3.2757\pm0.0008 \mathrm{\r{A}}$. This indicates a lattice compression of -0.19 % from bulk WSe$_{2}$. By using experimentally determined graphene lattice constant ($a_\mathrm{MLG}=2.4575\pm0.0007 \mathrm{\r{A}}$), we found that a 3$\times$3 unit cell of the slightly compressed WSe$_{2}$ is perfectly commensurate with a 4$\times$4 graphene lattice with a mismatch below 0.03 %, which could explain why the monolayer WSe$_{2}$ is compressed on MLG. From XRD and first-principles calculations, however, we conclude that the observed size of strain is negligibly small to account for a discrepancy in $\Delta_\mathrm{SO}$ found between exfoliated and epitaxial monolayers in earlier ARPES. In addition, angle-resolved, ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shed light on the band alignment between WSe$_{2}$ and MLG/SiC and indicate electron transfer from graphene to the WSe$_{2}$ monolayer. As further revealed by atomic force microscopy, the WSe$_{2}$ island size depends on the number of carbon layers on top of the SiC substrate. This suggests that the epitaxy of WSe$_{2}$ favors the weak van der Waals interactions with graphene while it is perturbed by the influence of the SiC substrate and its carbon buffer layer.

In the present study, the magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) was applied to the motion analysis of compressed natural gas (CNG) bubbles in laminar diesel flow after enhancing the liquid fuel with iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) in a horizontal pipe using experimental and mathematical approaches. Two distinct techniques were adopted for the experimental measurements: High speed video camera system (HSVC) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The result of the PIV investigation indicates that increasing the intensity of the magnetic field changed the axial velocity profile of the diesel/nanoparticle mixture from the parabolic to a relatively flat shape. Whilst to illustrate the effect of magnetic field on bubble velocity, the axial and vertical components of the bubble velocity were computed by keeping track of the geometric center of the bubble from frame to frame recorded by HSVC. Moreover, the fundamental equation of motion of a single CNG bubble based upon Newton’s law under a forced magnetic field were derived and presented. The origination processes of the velocity dispersion of the liquid and gas stages of the bubbly flow were equally discussed. The governing partial-differential equations were numerically determined by means of a 4th order Runge-Kutta method. The outcomes from the model solution indicate that at magnetic field intensity (B = 0), the comparison between mathematical and experimental results in literature for the average axial and perpendicular components of bubble velocity resulted in mean percentage differences of 10.4 % and 15.6 % respectively.

There is a rapidly growing need to communicate to the public and policymakers on the nature and impact of climate change and its associated extremes, which manifest themselves across essential Food-Energy-Water Systems (FEWS). The complexity of this nexus demands analytical tools that can capture the essence of FEWS with the climate system, which may be difficult to stage and implement from a computationally efficient point-of-view. Reduced Complexity Models (RCMs) can synthesize important facets of a system quickly and with less dependence on difficult-to-assign inputs. We report on the development of an RCM framework for the FEWS nexus, to serve as a basic research tool in facilitating parameter sensitivity experiments as well as a means to establish more insightful dialogue with stakeholders through joint scenario construction. Three stand-alone and coupled models at the basin scale have been configured using Stella Architect software to simulate: 1) major flows and storage of water, 2) power plant operations and subsequent impacts on river reaches; and 3) nitrogen (N) mobilization and transport from atmospheric and landmass sources to riverine receiving waters. The Delaware River Basin is chosen for a contemporary simulation test case. Modeled results are calibrated and validated using observed stream gauge data, indicating reliable model performance at the monthly and annual time steps (0.57 < NSE < 0.98). A set of single and multi-factor climate, technology, and policy experiments are then explored using the RCM framework. Basin-scale system sensitivities are investigated across a set of intensified climate extremes, revealing the crucial roles of sewage treatment and energy infrastructure for climate resilience, significant exacerbations as well as mitigations of thermal and N pollution under opposing climate extremes, and important tradeoffs between river temperature and electricity production that are explored with technology and policy scenarios.

Change to global climate, including both its progressive character and episodic extremes, constitutes a critical societal challenge. We apply here a framework to analyze Climate-induced Extremes on the Food, Energy, Water System Nexus (C-FEWS), with particular emphasis on the roles and sensitivities of traditionally-engineered (TEI) and nature-based (NBI) infrastructures. The rationale and technical specifications for the overall C-FEWS framework, its component models and supporting datasets are detailed in an accompanying paper (Vörösmarty et al., this issue). We report here on initial results produced by applying this framework in two important macro-regions of the United States (Northeast, NE; Midwest, MW), where major decisions affecting global food production, biofuels, energy security and pollution abatement require critical scientific support. We present the essential FEWS-related hypotheses that organize our work with an overview of the methodologies and experimental designs applied. We report on initial C-FEWS framework results using five emblematic studies that highlight how various combinations of climate sensitivities, TEI-NBI deployments, technology, and environmental management have determined regional FEWS performance over a historical time period (1980–2019). Despite their relative simplicity, these initial scenario experiments yielded important insights. We found that FEWS performance was impacted by climate stress, but the sensitivity was strongly modified by technology choices applied to both ecosystems (e.g., cropland production using new cultivars) and engineered systems (e.g., thermoelectricity from different fuels and cooling types). We tabulated strong legacy effects stemming from decisions on managing NBI (e.g., multi-decade land conversions that limit long-term carbon sequestration). The framework also enabled us to reveal how broad-scale policies aimed at a particular net benefit can result in unintended and potentially negative consequences. For example, tradeoff modeling experiments identified the regional importance of TEI in the form wastewater treatment and NBI via aquatic self-purification. This finding, in turn, could be used to guide potential investments in point and/or non-point source water pollution control. Another example used a reduced complexity model to demonstrate a FEWS tradeoff in the context of water supply, electricity production, and thermal pollution. Such results demonstrated the importance of TEI and NBI in jointly determining historical FEWS performance, their vulnerabilities, and their resilience to extreme climate events. It is rich in caffeoylquinic acids, flavonoids and iridoid glycosides and has strong reducing capacities. Therefore, it can be used as a green material to synthesize silver nanoparticles.Methods: LLJ was used as a reducing agent to produce the LLJ-mediated silver nanoparticles (LLJ-AgNPs). The structure and physicochemical properties of LLJ-AgNPs were characterized by ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV-Vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and x-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Antioxidant activity of LLJ-AgNPs was determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging. Antibacterial activity was determined by 96 well plates (AGAR) gradient dilution, while the anticancer potential was determined by MTT assay.Results: The results showed LLJ-AgNPs had a spherical structure with the maximum UV-Vis absorption at 400 nm. In addition, LLJ-AgNPs exhibited excellent antioxidant properties, where the free radical scavenging rate of LLJ-AgNPs was increased from 39% to 92% at concentrations from 0.25 to 1.0 mg/mL. Moreover, LLJ-AgNPs displayed excellent antibacterial properties against E. coli and Salmonella at room temperature, with minimum inhibitory values of 10− 6 and 10− 5 g/L, respectively. In addition, the synthetic LLJ-AgNPs exhibited a better inhibition effect in the proliferation of cancer cells (HepG2, MDA-MB − 231, and Hela cells).Conclusion: The present study provides a green approach to synthesize LLJ-AgNPs. 33. EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SOLAR VORTEX POWER GENERATION SYSTEM INTEGRATED WITH SENSIBLE THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE

Solar updraft power technologies suffer low efficiency and require a large collection area. Enhancement techniques are essential to overcome these setbacks. This paper investigates and discusses the effect of extended Sensible Thermal Energy Storage (STES) outside the canopy of the Solar Vortex Power Generation (SVPG) system. The extended sensible thermal energy storage integration is evaluated experimentally utilizing an SVPG model installed in the solar research site in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. The system consists of an (8-m-Dia). solar collector and a vortex generator. The selected material of the STES is black-painted pebbles that covered the ground underneath the canopy of the solar collector and then extended by 1 m outside the canopy. The variables considered for the performance evaluation are ambient, air inlet and outlet of the collector temperatures, incident solar irradiance, and air outlet velocity. Two cases have been studied, one with black painted pebbles covering the ground up to the outer diameter of the canopy (8-m-Dia) and the second is 1.0 m extended coverage outside the canopy (10-m-Dia). The performance of the SVPG is proven to enhance by the extension of the STES beyond the collector area. The extension of STES increased the mean thermal efficiency value by 0.85% and increased the mass flow rate by 0.01 kg/s. The performance indicator is increased by around 19.3%. It could be concluded that the extension of pebbles outside the canopy increases the amount of solar photothermic conversion, leading to improved efficiency of the SVPG system.

Objective To evaluate and compare the root canal morphology of mandibular premolars in Saudi and Sudanese subpopulations and between males and females within each group using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was done between May 2022 and July 2023. Six hundred premolars from Saudi and Sudanese subpopulations were evaluated using CBCT for their number of roots, type of root canal configuration based on Vertucci's classification, and average canal length measured from the buccal cusp tip to the root end. Statistical Analysis Statistical comparisons were made between males and females within each subpopulation and the two subpopulations using the chi-square test for root number and type of root canal configuration and an independent sample t -test for the canal length. Results Most mandibular premolars in both subpopulations had a single root, with type I root canal configuration. However, Sudanese showed various canal configurations (I, II, III, IV, and V) compared with Saudis, which was statistically significant in the first canal of the first mandibular premolar (p < 0.05). Also, there were statistically significant differences in canal length between Saudi males and females (p < 0.05) and between Saudis and Sudanese (p < 0.05) in the first and second premolars. Conclusion Although most mandibular premolars in Saudi and Sudanese subpopulations exhibited a single root and type I canal configuration, variations exist between and within the groups, highlighting ethnic and gender differences and emphasizing the need for dentists' attention. Climate change continues to challenge food, energy, and water systems (FEWS) across the globe and will figure prominently in shaping future decisions on how best to manage this nexus. In turn, traditionally engineered and natural infrastructures jointly support and hence determine FEWS performance, their vulnerabilities, and their resilience in light of extreme climate events. We present here a research framework to advance the modeling, data integration, and assessment capabilities that support hypothesis-driven research on FEWS dynamics cast at the macro-regional scale. The framework was developed to support studies on climate-induced extremes on food, energy, and water systems (C-FEWS) and designed to identify and evaluate response options to extreme climate events in the context of managing traditionally engineered (TEI) and nature-based infrastructures (NBI). This paper presents our strategy for a first stage of research using the framework to analyze contemporary FEWS and their sensitivity to climate drivers shaped by historical conditions (1980–2019). We offer a description of the computational framework, working definitions of the climate extremes analyzed, and example configurations of numerical experiments aimed at evaluating the importance of individual and combined driving variables. Single and multiple factor experiments involving the historical time series enable two categories of outputs to be analyzed: the first involving biogeophysical entities (e.g., crop production, carbon sequestered, nutrient and thermal pollution loads) and the second reflecting a portfolio of services provided by the region’s TEI and NBI, evaluated in economic terms. The framework is exercised in a series of companion papers in this special issue that focus on the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States. Use of the C-FEWS framework to simulate historical conditions facilitates research to better identify existing FEWS linkages and how they function. The framework also enables a next stage of analysis to be pursued using future scenario pathways that will vary land use, technology deployments, regulatory objectives, and climate trends and extremes. It also supports a stakeholder engagement effort to co-design scenarios of interest beyond the research domain.

The vortex generator is an essential segment in the solar vortex engine (SVE). Its design could be modified to strengthen the generated air vortex and enhance the system’s performance. This work aims to investigate the vortex generator design’s influence on the SVE’s performance. Three different vortex generator designs are studied employing three-dimensional CFD simulations. Experimental investigations have been utilised to support the CFD simulation. The considered designs are Case-1: basic design, Case-2: with a cone structure inside the arena and Case-3: with a hole at the bottom of the vortex generator. The cone structure increases the heat transfer area, increasing the vortex generator’s air temperature and producing higher buoyancy forces for the flow field. Cases 1 and 2 produced the best vortex stability as the air vortex shape, pressure and vorticity distributions are uniform. The highest static pressure drop is achieved with the basic design. The basic design, Case-1, produces 1.0% and 5.0% higher static pressure drop than Case-2 and Case-3, respectively. The lower hole affected the air vortex stability negatively.
