Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of principal’s supervisory practices of Mindanao State University-Sulu on the attitudes of teachers and parental involvement. In terms of happiness, interest, and enthusiasm of teachers and parents on the parental involvement in terms of support and assistance. The study was conducted and utilized MSU-Sulu Laboratory High School teachers and parents of the students. The parents were represented by the Parents Teachers Community Association (PTCA) elected officials. The parents have answered questionnaire on their attitudes when the principal and teachers invited the parents for meetings and other school activities as it is supervised by the school principal. The researcher grouped the attitudes of teachers and parental involvement. The average responses were analyzed using mean. Simple regression was used to determine the impact of the supervisory practices on the attitudes of teachers and parental involvement. The teachers have very high level of happiness, interest and enthusiasm for the principal’s supervisory practices. The parents have high level of happiness, interest and enthusiasm for the principal’s supervisory practices during the meeting and other activities. The principal’s supervisory practices highly impacted on teachers’ attitudes and parental involvement. The principal’s supervisory practices were a factor that influences the happiness, interest and enthusiasm of teachers and parental involvement.

14. Effect of pouring temperature on impact toughness on brass (Cu-Zn) through metal casting

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact toughness of brass (CuZn) with five variations of pouring temperature during the production of cast-samples through a metal casting process. Five variations of the pouring temperature are 1060, 1110, 1160, 1210, and 1260 °C, respectively. Meanwhile, the mold is produced from medium carbon steel and does not preheat (room temperature). The results show the maximum impact toughness is 20,67 Joule at 1110 °C of pouring temperature, then the minimum impact toughness is 17,67 Joule at 1260 °C of pouring temperature. In general, it can be concluded that the impact toughness decreases with increasing pouring temperature.

16. Longitudinal prediction of periconception alcohol use: a 20-year prospective cohort study across adolescence, young adulthood and pregnancy

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol consumption is common in adolescence and young adulthood and may continue into pregnancy, posing serious risk to early fetal development. We examine the frequency of periconception alcohol use (prior to pregnancy awareness) and the extent to which adolescent and young adult alcohol use prospectively predict periconception use. DESIGN: A longitudinal, population-based study. SETTING: Victoria, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 289 women in trimester three of pregnancy (age 29-35 years; 388 pregnancies). MEASURES: The main exposures were binge [≥ 4.0 standard drinks (SDs)/day] and frequent (≥ 3 days/week) drinking in adolescence (mean age = 14.9-17.4 years) and young adulthood (mean age 20.7-29.1 years). Outcomes were frequency (≥ 3 days/week, ≥ monthly, never) and quantity (≥ 4.0 SDs, ≥ 0.5 and < 4.0 SDs, none) of periconception drinking. FINDINGS: Alcohol use was common in young adulthood prior to pregnancy (72%) and in the early weeks of pregnancy (76%). The proportions drinking on most days and binge drinking were similar at both points. Reflecting a high degree of continuity in alcohol use behaviours, most women who drank periconceptionally had an earlier history of frequent (77%) and/or binge (85%) drinking throughout the adolescent or young adult years. Young adult binge drinking prospectively predicted periconception drinking quantity [odds ratio (OR) = 3.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.9-7.4], compared with women with no prior history. Similarly, frequent young adult drinking prospectively predicted frequent periconception drinking (OR = 30.7, 95% CI = 12.3-76.7). CONCLUSIONS: Women who engage in risky (i.e. frequent and binge) drinking in their adolescent and young adult years are more likely to report risky drinking in early pregnancy prior to pregnancy recognition than women with no prior history of risky drinking.

Abstract

The main purpose of this research was the production of biodiesel from screw pine fruit seed (SPFS) oil as a new biodiesel feed-stock using in-situ transesterification with the assistance of microwave and ultrasound. The effect of independent variable such as the SPFS oil to methanol ratio, reaction time, catalyst concentration and temperature were investigated and compared the results of both methods. The physicochemical parameters of the biodiesel, such as kinematic viscosity, density and acid value were analysed using the EN 14214-2003 standard. The fatty acid methyl ester composition was identified using GC–MS. The experimental results with 25:1 w/w ratio of methanol to the SPFS oil, 1:1 w/w ratio of methanol to chloroform, 5% KOH, 50 rpm stirring and 65 C reaction temperature showed that the maximum conversion efficiency was approximately 88.12% for the assistance of microwave with 4-min reaction time and 450W microwave power, and it was approximately 86.38% for the assistance of ultrasound with 80-min reaction time, 37 kHz ultrasound. The physicochemical properties met to the EN 14214-2003 standard, except for the acid value. Meanwhile, the GC–MS analysis identified five major fatty acid esters in the biodiesel.

Abstract

Introduction: A decision to discontinue MS immunotherapies is common in clinical practice - whether in order to switch to another therapy or at an advanced stage of progressive MS without relapses. The evidence regarding individual risk of MS re-activation after treatment discontinuation is limited. Aim(s): To evaluate associations of demographic and clinical patient characteristics with the risk of relapses after discontinuing treatment. Both overall and treatment-specific associations are explored. Method(s): Using the global MSBase registry, we identified all patients who discontinued MS immunotherapy after >=3 months on treatment, with the recorded disability score (EDSS) at the time of discontinuing treatment, and prospectively recorded follow-up of >=6 months. The probability of experiencing a relapse after discontinuing treatment, conditional on patient characteristics, was analysed with Cox proportional hazards model. Differences in these associations among different therapies were studied with interaction terms. Result(s): 24,989 episodes of treatment discontinuation were recorded from 17,871 patients (74% female, mean age at discontinuation 39 years, 88% relapsing-remitting MS, mean MS duration 10 years, median EDSS 2.5). The patient characteristics associated with a lower hazard of MS re-activation were male sex (b=0.87, p< 0.001), older age (b=0.98, p< 0.001), MS duration (b=1.01, p< 0.001), secondary progressive MS (b=0.73, p< 0.001), longer treatment duration (0.95, p< 0.001), greater number of prior treatments (1: b=0.62, p< 0.001; >=2: b=0.39, p< 0.001) and greater number of relapses during the previous year (1: b=1.30, p< 0.001; >=2: b=1.62, p< 0.001). The characteristics associated with a greater risk of MS re-activation were clinically isolated syndrome (b=1.87, p< 0.001) and greater EDSS (4-5.5: b=1.41, p< 0.001; >=6: b=1.17, p=0.001). 37. Production process and optimization of solid bioethanol from empty fruit bunches of palm oil using response surface methodology

© 2019 by the authors. This study aimed to observe the potential of solid bioethanol as an alternative fuel with high caloric value. The solid bioethanol was produced from liquid bioethanol, which was obtained from the synthesis of oil palm empty fruit bunches (PEFBs) through the delignification process by using organosolv pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Enzymatic hydrolysis was conducted using enzyme (60 FPUg-1 of cellulose) at a variety of temperatures (35 °C, 70 °C, and 90 °C) and reaction times (2, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h) in order to obtain a high sugar yield. The highest sugars were yielded at the temperature of 90 °C for 48 h (152.51 mg/L). Furthermore, fermentation was conducted using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The bioethanol yield after fermentation was 62.29 mg/L. Bioethanol was extracted by distillation process to obtain solid bioethanol. The solid bioethanol was produced by using stearic acid as the additive. In order to get high-quality solid bioethanol, the calorific value was optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) model. This model provided the factor variables of bioethanol concentration (vol %), stearic acid (g), and bioethanol (mL) with a minus result error. The highest calorific value was obtained with 7 g stearic acid and 5 mL bioethanol (43.17 MJ/kg). Burning time was tested to observe the quality of the solid bioethanol. The highest calorific value resulted in the longest burning time. The solid bioethanol has a potential as solid fuel due to the significantly higher calorific value compared to the liquid bioethanol.

© 2019 by the authors. Optimizing the process parameters of biodiesel production is the key to maximizing biodiesel yields. In this study, artificial neural network models integrated with ant colony optimization were developed to optimize the parameters of the two-step Cerbera manghas biodiesel production process: (1) esterification and (2) transesterification. The parameters of esterification and transesterification processes were optimized to minimize the acid value and maximize the C. manghas biodiesel yield, respectively. There was excellent agreement between the average experimental values and those predicted by the artificial neural network models, indicating their reliability. These models will be useful to predict the optimum process parameters, reducing the trial and error of conventional experimentation. The kinetic study was conducted to understand the mechanism of the transesterification process and, lastly, the model could measure the physicochemical properties of the C. manghas biodiesel.

Abstract

The need and development of cleaner and greener alternative technologies using the heterogeneous catalytic are very important in fuel synthesis. Hydroxyapatite-supported Ni-Ce-Cu as biomaterial catalysts were synthesized and characteristic to study their potential to be used for glycerol reforming to hydrogen production. The catalysts have been prepared by deposition-precipitation and impregnation method for hydrogen production via aqueous phase reforming (APR) with varying the amount of nickel, cerium and copper. The catalysts were characterized by BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, and SEM-EDX techniques. It is found that the difference percent weight of Ni, Ce, Cu loading prepared via deposition-precipitation method shows a significant effect for the surface area, distribution of metals and crystallization of catalysts. The highest BET surface (61,11 m2/gr) and uniformly metals distribution on the surface Hydroxyapatite (HAP) area was noticed for catalysts composition containing much more Ce and Cu.
