Bu çalışmada, Batı Anadolu Bölgesi'nde 10 ilde üretilen 156 önemli yerel fasulye ekotipi 2015 yılında toplanmış ve ekotipler arasındaki biyolojik çeşitliliği araştırmak ve karakterize etmek için 2016 yılında Akdeniz Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi'nde tarla denemesi yürütülmüştür. İncelenen karakterler açısından en belirgin değişim kuru sap ve tane veriminde kaydedilirken bunu bitkide bakla sayısı, baklada tane sayısı, bitki boyu ve yüz tane ağırlığı takip etmiştir. En yüksek bitki başına tane verimi MGL-30 (145.6 g), MGL-38 (101.7 g), ANT-43 (87.8 g) ve MGL-26 (81.9 g) genotiplerinden elde edilmiştir. Temel bileşen analizinde, 17 bileşen yerel fasulye genetik kaynaklarındaki varyasyonun %74.9’unu izah etmiştir. Bakla rengi, bitki tipi ve sarılma özelliği en fazla katkı sağlayan özellikler olmuştur. Bitki boyu ve olgunlaşma gün sayısı, biplot analizinde tane verimi ile aynı yönde ve en dar açıya sahip vektörler olmuştur. Morfolojik özellikler kullanılarak üretilen benzerlik dendogramı genotipleri iki ana gruba (A ve B) ve dört alt gruba (A1, A2, B1 ve B2 ) ayrılmıştır. Morfolojik özellikler açısından en uzak gruplarda yer alan MGL-01, KTH-01, MNS-01 ve ANT-13 ile UŞK-01, ANT-01, MGL-05 ve AYD-02 ekotipleri kullanılarak melezleme ıslahı ile yeni çeşitler geliştirilebilir. In this study, 156 important local bean ecotypes produced in 10 provinces in the Western Anatolia Region were collected in 2015, and field trial was conducted in 2016 at Akdeniz University, Faculty of Agriculture in order to investigate and characterize biodiversity. The highest variation was recorded for straw yield and seed yield per plant followed by pod number per plant, seed number per pod, plant height and 100 seed yield. MGL-30 (145.6 g), MGL-38 (101.7 g), ANT-43 (87.8 g) and MGL-26 (81.9 g) gave the highest seed yields per plant. In principle component analysis, 17 components explained 74.9% of genetic variation in local bean genetic resources. Pod color, plant growth and speed of climbing were the most important traits contributing to diversity. In biplot vector analysis, plant height and days to maturity were of the closest and parallel vector angle to seed yield. Hierarchal constellation cluster analysis on the bases of morphological traits produced two main groups (A and B) and 4 subgroups (A1, A2, B1, and B2). Most distant landraces of MGL-01, KTH01, MNS-01, and ANT-13 to the genotypes of UŞK-01, ANT-01, MGL05 and AYD-02 may be used in a hybridization program.

Ülkemizde fasulye genetik kaynakları, ıslah çalışmalarında yeterince değerlendirilemediğinden, geliştirilen çeşit sayısı ve üretim miktarı yeterli düzeyde değildir. Bu nedenle, ülkemizde fasulye gen kaynakları yönünden mevcut zenginliğin yapılacak araştırmalarla ortaya çıkarılması, bunların yeni çeşit geliştirme ve alternatif tarım sistemlerinde kullanılması oldukça önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmada, 2015- 2016 yıllarında Türkiye’nin Batı Anadolu Bölgesi’ndeki farklı fasulye yetiştirme alanlarından toplanan yerel kuru fasulye genotipleri, 2016 yılı yetiştirme sezonunda Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi deneme alanında yetiştirilmiştir. Fasulye genotipleri, IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute) & EUCPVO (European Union Community Plant Variety Office) ve TTSM (Tohumluk Tescil ve Sertifikasyon Merkezi) tarafından belirtilen çeşit tanımlama kriterlerine göre 53 morfolojik özellik yönünden tanımlanmıştır. Fasulye genotiplerinin kalitatif ve kantitatif özellikler bakımından belirgin farklılıklar gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. Bitki büyüme özelliklerine ait korelasyon analizi sonucunda tane verimi ile bitki boyu, bitkide bakla sayısı, baklada tane sayısı arasında anlamlı ve önemli düzeyde ilişkiler tespit edilmiştir. Temel Bileşen Analizi (TBA) sonucunda incelenen 53 özellik ile ilgili olarak birbirinden bağımsız 10 adet temel bileşen ekseni elde edilmiştir. Bu eksenlerin toplam varyasyonun %68.59’unu temsil ettiği belirlenmiştir. Genotip x özellik ilişkisini gösteren biplot analizinde; genotipler, büyüme şekilleri, bakla özellikleri ve verim özellikleri yönünden ayrılmıştır. Kümeleme analizi sonucunda fasulye genotiplerinin ele alınan 53 karakter yönünden iki ana gruba ayrıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Grupların ayrılmasındaki en temel karakterin büyüme formu olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu çalışmadan elde edilen verilerin, yakın gelecekte yapılacak ıslah ve genetik çalışmaların başlangıç noktasını oluşturacağı düşünülmektedir. Common bean genetic resources cannot be adequately evaluated in breeding studies in our country, thus the number of cultivars developed and production amount are not sufficient. Therefore, it is very crucial to reveal the richness of common bean genetic resources, and to use them for the developing new cultivars and an alternative agricultural system in the country. In the present study, common bean genotypes collected from Western Anatolia Region of Turkey in 2015-2016 were grown on the experimental farm of Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, during 2016 growing season. Genotypes were described in terms of 53 morphological characteristics according to the type identification criteria specified by IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute) & EU-CPVO (European Union Community Plant Variety Office) and VRSCC (Variety Registration and Seed Certification Center). It was determined that genotypes revealed significant differences in terms of qualitative and quantitative characteristics. As a result of the correlation analysis of the plant growth characteristics, it was determined that seed yield per plant was significantly correlated with plant height, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod. Result of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), 10 principal components axes were obtained from 53 morphological traits. These axes represented 68.59% of the total variation. Genotypes were divided in terms of growth patterns, pod features and yield characteristics in biplot analysis, which reveals genotype x trait relationship. As a consequence of cluster analysis, genotypes were divided into two main groups in terms of 53 morphological traits. It was observed that the most basic character in the separation of groups is the growth habit. It was thought that the data obtained from this study will serve as starting point for the near future breeding and genetic studies.

The Neoplasm trait in pea pods is reported to be due to the lack of ultraviolet (UV) light in glasshouse conditions or in response to pea weevil (Bruchus pisorum L.) damage. This pod deformation arises from the growth of non-meristematic tissue on pods of domesticated peas (Pisum sativum L. subsp. sativum). Neither expressivity, nor the effect of pea weevil on neoplasm in the tall wild pea (P. sativum L. subsp. elatius (M. Bieb.) Asch. &amp, Graebn.), have been adequately studied. We aimed to study the expression and inheritance of neoplasm in the tall wild pea and crosses between domesticated and tall wild peas grown in the glasshouse (without pea weevils) and in the field (with pea weevils) under natural infestation conditions. Neoplasm was found in all pods in tall wild peas when grown in the glasshouse, while it was not detected on pods of field-grown plants despite heavy pea weevil damage. In inter-subspecific crosses between P. sativum subsp. sativum and P. sativum subsp. elatius, all F1 plants had neoplastic pods, and the F2 populations segregated in a good fit ratio of 3 (neoplasm): 1 (free from neoplasm) under glasshouse conditions, which suggests that neoplasm on pods of the tall wild pea was controlled by a single dominant gene. Expressivity of neoplasm in the progeny differed from parent to parent used in inter-subspecific crosses. There was no relationship between neoplasm and damage by pea weevil under heavy insect epidemics under field conditions. The neoplasm occurring under glasshouse conditions may be due to one or to a combination of environmental factors. Since wild peas are useful genetic resources for breeding programs aiming at fresh pea production that could be utilized under glasshouse conditions, negative selection could be considered in segregating populations.

Chickpea leaf miner (Liriomyza cicerina Rond.) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) is a distinctive, important insect pest of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) that can cause substantial yield losses if it is not adequately controlled. Host plant resistance to leaf miner is one of the best control options in sustainable farming. Since there are insufficient resistant sources in cultivated chickpea, an accession (AWC 612) of C. reticulatum Ladiz., crossable with cultivated chickpea, was subjected to 200, 300, and 400 Gy gamma rays to increase variation through mutating, and the mutant germplasm line AWC 612M (Reg. No. GP-305, PI 688421), with a multipinnate leaf type, was developed and selected in the M-3. AWC 612M was selected for its resistance against leaf miner under natural epidemic conditions in the field for 10 yr from 2007 to 2016. AWC 612M was free from damage, while the susceptible chickpea line ILC 3397 had numerous mines in >91% of leaflets and leaf drop >31%. AWC 612M, derived from C. reticulatum, which is compatible with the cultivated chickpea, represents a new source for breeding programs of resistance to leaf miner.

Yield and yield components is one of the key objectives of the legume breeding program worldwide. Information on these traits is required for the selection of desirable types and efficient utilization of the genetic diversity in dry bean improvement program. Local landraces of dry beans grown over long time period are more resistant to low input growing conditions its genetic and morphologic properties and quality is more acceptable by the growers. From this perspective, 83 dry bean landraces were collected from different bean growing areas of Western Anatolia Region of Turkey in 2015-2016. The dry bean landraces were grown on the experimental farm of Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu during 2016 growing season. A single plant from each dry bean landrace was selected according to morphological characterization results and weighted scaling method, and twenty ( 8 climber and 12 bush types) dry bean lines were accepted as promising. In the present study, yield and yield components of 12 dry bean lines and 2 commercial cultivars were compared in Bolu province under western black sea ecological condition of Turkey. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Block Design with three replicates in 2017 growing season on the experimental farm of Abant Izzet Baysal University. Emergence percentage (69.50-96.00%), days to flowering 50% (48.00-52.00 days), days to maturity (86.00-107.33 days), plant height (37.20-58.30 cm), height to first pod (12.50-19.00 cm), number of branches per plant (6.25-8.25), number of pods per plant (16.96-41.50 pods), seeds per pod (4.00-6.40 seeds), seed yield per plant (25.41-96.83 g plant -1 ) and 100 seeds weight (29.82-55.35 g) were determined according to IPGRI and EU-CPVO criteria. As a result, lines CNK-2, CNK-4, YLV-28, YLV-32 and BLCK-7 had superior with respect to yield and yield components and hence selected advanced promising lines will be transferred to regional yield trials required for the official procedures of cultivar registration.

Nohut yaprak galeri sineği [Liriomyza cicerina Rond. (Diptera: Agromyzidae)] dikkate değer verim kayıplarına yol açtığı için Türkiye’deki en önemli ve yaygın nohut (Cicer arietinum L) zararlılardan biridir. Nohut yaprak galeri sineği zararının üstesinden gelmek için en pratik, çevreci ve ekonomik çözümlerden biri dayanıklı çeşitlerin kullanılmasıdır. Bu çalışma tarımı yapılan nohut ile melezlenebilen Cicer echinospermum P.H. Davis genotiplerinin nohut yaprak galeri sineğine dayanıklılık için değerlendirilmesini amaçlamıştır. C. echinospermum türüne ait 22 genotip ve nohut yaprak galeri sineğine duyarlı tarımı yapılan bir genotip tarla koşullarında bir 1-9 görsel ölçek kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Hassas genotip (CA 2969) her 10 sırada tekrarlanmıştır. Genotipler 1-9 görsel ölçeği üzerinden hassas genotip 8 ölçek değeri aldıktan sonra değerlendirilmiştir. C. echinospermum genotiplerinin büyük çoğunluğu dayanıklı olarak bulunmuştur. Bu dayanıklılık kaynakları C. echinospermum tarımı yapılan nohut ile melezlenebildiği için ıslah programlarında kullanılabilecektir.

The use of resistant plant varieties is an important control option in the management of seed beetles (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) under storage conditions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to screen and select pea (Pisum L.) accessions for resistance to pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis L.) under storage conditions. Seeds of four Pisum taxa including two accessions each of P. sativum L. (ACP 11, ACP 15), P. elatius M. Bieb. (AWP 442, AWP 449), P. fulvum Sibth. & Sm. (AWP 600, AWP 601) and one accession of P. abyssinicum A. Braun. (ACP 100) were evaluated using both free-choice and no-choice test methods for the pest under laboratory conditions. Resistance was evaluated by measuring number of eggs per seed by the bruchid (oviposition), number of holes per seed (adult emergence), percent of seed damage and seed weight loss (%). Both accessions of P. fulvum (AWP 600, AWP 601) and one accession each of P. elatius (AWP 442) and P. sativum (ACP 11) had no emergence holes and seed weight loss in both tests. Overall the results suggest that the P. sativum accession, ACP 11, may be used to sustain the damage caused by the pulse beetle without using pesticides during the storage. Additionally, the accessions of wild species (P. elatiusAWP 442 and P. fulvumAWP 600, AWP 601) that were identified as completely resistant could be used in breeding programs for the improvement of resistant cultivars.

WOS:000496487400008 Seed size, seed shape and seed colour are easily discernible phenotypic traits of beans in the market. Consumers often have specific preferences to different combinations of seed size, shape and colour. Local landraces are usually grown for their desired organoleptic and seed properties by consumers. This study investigated the variability in seed size attributes, seed shape, visual seed colour properties and seed luminosity/chromaticity properties of the germplasm of 255 landraces representing major local bean types grown in 20 provinces in Western Anatolia Region of Turkey. Measurements were made on seeds from representative single plants for seed size index, 100 seed weight, seed length, seed width, seed thickness, seed width in cross section, seed shape, seed degree of curvature in kidney types, seed shape in cross section, number of seed colors, main seed color, secondary seed colour, distribution of secondary seed color, seed veining, colour of hilum ring and values of L (Luminosity), chromaticity a*, chromaticity b*, chroma (C) and hue angle. Data were statistically analysed, principle component analysis was carried out, the germplasm was classified by UPGMA dendograms and selections were made on the bases of GGE biplot analysis. Landraces showed a considerable diversity for seed size, seed shape and seed colour trait measured. All seed size variables ranged by 2-10-fold within the germplasm. 100-seed weight ranged ten-fold from very small seeded Meso-American types (18.4 g, e.g. AYD-8, KTH-30, MGL-1, DNZ-1 and BRD-24) to very large seeded Andean types (182.3 g, e.g. MGL-37, PKS-1, ANT-33, MGL-31 and ANT-16). Seed shape also varied as kidney-shaped (96 landraces), circular to elliptic (73), circular (58), elliptic (27) and rectangular (1) shapes. Main and secondary seed colours had considerable variation within the germplasm with 151 landraces had white, 31 grey, 31 beige, 23 brown, 8 violet, 5 red and 4 black main seed colour whereas 24 landraces had violet followed by 17 black and 14 red secondary seed colour. Landraces exhibited a large variation for chromaticity and luminosity variables. L value ranged between 20.3 and 90.1 representing a 4.5-fold variation. The landraces in the germplasm were assessed and characterised on the bases of diversity in seed morphological traits. Selections were made using UPGMA dendogram and GGE-biplot for production and breeding bean cultivars for preferences of changing consumer demands.

An experiment was carried out in order to investigate i) the variations in the cooking quality traits in pre-breeding collection of 60 Phaseolus sp landraces from Western Anatolia provinces and ii) cooking time in relation with other cooking quality traits. In terms of safe food and a healthy food supply, beans (Phaseolus spp.) are a significant source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals especially for poor populations throughout the world. They are also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic and oleic acids. From the past to the present, a large number of breeding studies to increase bean yield, especially the common bean (P. vulgaris L.), have resulted in the registration of many modern varieties, although quality and flavor traits in the modern varieties have been mostly ignored. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to compare protein, fat, fatty acid, and some mineral content such as selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) of landraces to modern varieties. The landrace LR05 had higher mineral contents, particularly Se and Zn, and protein than the modern varieties. The landrace LR11 had the highest linoleic acid. The landraces are grown by farmers in small holdings for dual uses, such as both dry seed and snap bean production, and are commercialized with a higher cash price. The landraces of the common bean are, not only treasures that need to be guarded for the future, but also important genetic resources that can be used in bean breeding programs. The results of this study suggest that landraces are essential sources of important nutritional components for food security and a healthy food supply.

With 1 figure and 1 table Abstract Yield of the cultivated chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) can be doubled when the sowing time is shifted from spring to autumn in the Mediterranean region; however, weeds are one of the most important and unsolved problems in autumn-sown or irrigated chickpea. To solve weed problem, improvement in herbicide resistance has given priority for effective weed management by the farmers. This study deals with the selection of resistance to imidazolinone (IMI) using induced mutagenesis in three Cicer species including five ‘macrosperma’ (ILC 8617, CA 2969, Sierra, Mexican white and Spanish), four ‘microsperma’ (ICC 552, ICC 4951, ICC 4958 and ICC 6119) chickpeas as well as three accessions of annual wild species, one accession of C. bijugum K.H. Rech. and two accessions of C. reticulatum Ladiz., in the field and pot experiments. At the first time, one highly IMI-resistant mutant of C. reticulatum was isolated after active ingredient of IMI on proposed dose was applied with increasing 10 times in field and 20 times in pot experiments. Bottleneck because of weeds on autumn-sown and irrigated chickpea will be solved using the new gene in plant breeding programmes.

Iron (Fe)-deficiency chlorosis causes considerable yield losses in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) when susceptible genotypes are grown in calcareous soils with high pH. The most feasible method for alleviating Fe deficiency is the selection of suitable cultivars resistant to Fe deficiency chlorosis. ICC 6119 (desi type), which is Fe-deficient chlorosis, was crossed with CA 2969 and Sierra (kabuli types), resistant to Fe deficiency chlorosis. Inheritance of resistance to Fe deficiency in chickpea revealed that the resistance was controlled by a single dominant gene in these genotypes crossed. A negative selection for resistance to Fe deficiency chlorosis will be effective after segregating generations.

The chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is usually grown under rainfed, rather than irrigated conditions, where drought accompanied by heat stress is a major growth constraint. The aim of this study was to select chickpea genotypes having resistance to drought/heat stress and to identify the most appropriate selection criteria for this. A total of 377 chickpea accessions were sown 2 months later than normal for the Antalya region (Turkey) to increase their exposure to the drought and high-temperature conditions of a typical summer in this part of the world. Interspersed between every 10 test genotypes as benchmark genotypes, were plants of the two known genotypes ILC 3279 (drought-susceptible) and ILC 8617 (drought-susceptible), while ICC 4958 (known drought-resistant) and ICCV 96029 (known very early, double-podded) were also sown for confirmation. All plants were subsequently screened for drought and heat stress resistance. Soon after the two known susceptible genotypes had died, evaluations of the entire trial were made visually on a scale from ‘1’ (free from drought/heat damage) to ‘9’ (all plants died from drought/ heat). Yield loss in many of the test genotypes and in the two known susceptible genotypes (ILC 3279 and ILC 8617) rose to 100 %. The desi chickpeas (smaller, dark seeds) were generally more drought- and heat-resistant than the kabuli chickpeas (larger, pale seeds). Two desi chickpeas, ACC 316 and ACC 317, were selected for drought and heat (>40 � C) resistance under field conditions. Seed weight was the trait least affected by adverse environmental conditions and having the highest heritability, and it should be used in early breeding selections. When breeding drought- and heat-resistant chickpeas, path and multivariate analyses showed that days to the first flowering and maturity to escape terminal drought and heat stresses should be evaluated ahead of many other phenological traits, and harvest index, biological yield and pods per plant for increased yield should also be considered.

About 90% of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in the world is grown under rainfed conditions where it is subjected to drought and heat stress. Unlike the cultivated chickpea, annual wild Cicer species possess sources of resistance to multiple stress; annual wild Cicer species were therefore evaluated for resistance to drought and heat stress. Eight annual wild Cicer species (Cicer bijugum, C. chorassanicum, C. cuneatum, C. echinospermum, C. judaicum, C. pinnatifidum, C. reticulatum, and C. yamashitae) were compared with special checks, the cvs ICC 4958 and FLIP 87-59C (drought resistant) and ICCV 96029 (very early double-podded). ILC 3279 and 8617 as drought susceptible checks were sown after every 10 test lines. Yield losses due to drought and heat stress in some accessions and susceptible checks (ILC 3279 and ILC 8617) reached 100%. Accessions were evaluated for drought and heat resistance on a 1 (free from drought and heat damage)- 9 (100% plant killed from drought and heat) visual scale. Four accessions of C. reticulatum and one accession of C. pinnatifidum were found to be as resistant to drought and heat stress (up to 41.8 degrees C) as the best checks. C. reticulatum should be taken account in short term breeding programs since it can be crossed with the cultivated chickpea.

The objective of this study was to detect plant hormone levels in different plant parts of chickpea, and to compare cultivars with different characteristics such as simple leaf vs. normal leaves, simple leaf vs. bipinnate leaf, kabuli type vs. desi types, double-podded vs. single-podded. It was found that there was a great variation in basic plant hormone levels among genotypes, and plant hormone concentrations varied according to leaf type, pod and seed characteristics in these genotypes. IAA level in leaves was the highest in ICC 6119 (bipinnate leaf) and followed by ICC 552 (double-pod) and Kusmen 99 (simple leaf), while it was highest level in pods of ICC 552 (double-pod). Zeatin concentration in leaves and pods was the highest level in ICC 6119 (bipinnate leaf). GA3 concentration was the highest in leaves of ICC 6119 (bipinnate leaf). ICC 552 (double-pod) has the highest GA3 in leaves. It was postulated that leaf type and pod characteristics may be related to hormones induced growth and development.

The effects of radiation on the shoot and root lengths of germinated seedling of irradiated seeds of Cicer species, i.e. three kabuli types and four desi types of cultivated chickpea (Cicer arietinum Ladiz.) and 2 annual wild types (C. reticulatum Ladiz. and C. bijugum K.H. Rech.) were investigated. The seeds were irradiated with a 60Co gamma source using 0, 200, 300 and 400 Gy doses at 1.66 kGy h−1. At 200 Gy minor effects could be observed, but at 400 Gy an obvious depression of shoot length was observed. The kabuli types were more affected than the desi ones. The critical dose that prevented the shoot and root elongation varied among species and also ranged from genotypes to genotype within species.

This study was conducted to evaluate the yield components in mung bean [Vigna radiata (L.)Wilczek] using the correlation, path and factor analyses. It was found that there was considerable variation for the characters studied. Factor 1 composed of 100-grain weight, podlength, pod width, branches per plant and pods per plant. The grain weight was stronglycorrelated with pod length and pod width. Pods per plant were significantly and positivelyassociated with branches per plant. Factor 2 consisted of biological, straw and grainyields. The seed yield was highly associated with biological and straw yields. Factor 3comprised of seed per pod, pods and flowers per peduncle. The fourth factor was onlythe days to flowering. The last factor was plant height. The total factors had 74% ofthe total variance induced by the characters. It was firstly concludedthat the factor analysis together with path and correlationcoefficients could successfully be used for determining characters usable for selection in themung bean breeding programs
