We study the cyclic color sequences induced at infinity by colored rays with apices being a given balanced finite bichromatic point set. We first study the case in which the rays are required to be pairwise disjoint. We derive a lower bound on the number of color sequences that can be realized from any such fixed point set and examine color sequences that can be realized regardless of the point set, exhibiting negative examples as well. We also provide a tight upper bound on the number of configurations that can be realized from a point set, and point sets for which there are asymptotically less configurations than that number. In addition, we provide algorithms to decide whether a color sequence is realizable from a given point set in a line or in general position. We address afterwards the variant of the problem where the rays are allowed to intersect. We prove that for some configurations and point sets, the number of ray crossings must be $\Theta(n^2)$ and study then configurations that can be realized by rays that pairwise cross. We show that there are point sets for which the number of configurations that can be realized by pairwise-crossing rays is asymptotically smaller than the number of configurations realizable by pairwise-disjoint rays. We provide also point sets from which any configuration can be realized by pairwise-crossing rays and show that there is no configuration that can be realized by pairwise-crossing rays from every point set.

Let $\Pi$ be a convex decomposition of a set $P$ of $n\geq 3$ points in general position in the plane. If $\Pi$ consists of more than one polygon, then either $\Pi$ contains a deletable edge or $\Pi$ contains a contractible edge.

Let $S$ be a finite set of geometric objects partitioned into classes or \emph{colors}. A subset $S'\subseteq S$ is said to be \emph{balanced} if $S'$ contains the same amount of elements of $S$ from each of the colors. We study several problems on partitioning $3$-colored sets of points and lines in the plane into two balanced subsets: (a) We prove that for every 3-colored arrangement of lines there exists a segment that intersects exactly one line of each color, and that when there are $2m$ lines of each color, there is a segment intercepting $m$ lines of each color. (b) Given $n$ red points, $n$ blue points and $n$ green points on any closed Jordan curve $\gamma$, we show that for every integer $k$ with $0 \leq k \leq n$ there is a pair of disjoint intervals on $\gamma$ whose union contains exactly $k$ points of each color. (c) Given a set $S$ of $n$ red points, $n$ blue points and $n$ green points in the integer lattice satisfying certain constraints, there exist two rays with common apex, one vertical and one horizontal, whose union splits the plane into two regions, each one containing a balanced subset of $S$., Comment: This paper was published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 181:21--32, 2015

We study biplane graphs drawn on a finite planar point set $S$ in general position. This is the family of geometric graphs whose vertex set is $S$ and can be decomposed into two plane graphs. We show that two maximal biplane graphs---in the sense that no edge can be added while staying biplane---may differ in the number of edges, and we provide an efficient algorithm for adding edges to a biplane graph to make it maximal. We also study extremal properties of maximal biplane graphs such as the maximum number of edges and the largest maximum connectivity over $n$-element point sets.

We study biplane graphs drawn on a finite point set $S$ in the plane in general position. This is the family of geometric graphs whose vertex set is $S$ and which can be decomposed into two plane graphs. We show that every sufficiently large point set admits a 5-connected biplane graph and that there are arbitrarily large point sets that do not admit any 6-connected biplane graph. Furthermore, we show that every plane graph (other than a wheel or a fan) can be augmented into a 4-connected biplane graph. However, there are arbitrarily large plane graphs that cannot be augmented to a 5-connected biplane graph by adding pairwise noncrossing edges.

We study an algorithmic problem that is motivated by ink minimization for sparse set visualizations. Our input is a set of points in the plane which are either blue, red, or purple. Blue points belong exclusively to the blue set, red points belong exclusively to the red set, and purple points belong to both sets. A \emph{red-blue-purple spanning graph} (RBP spanning graph) is a set of edges connecting the points such that the subgraph induced by the red and purple points is connected, and the subgraph induced by the blue and purple points is connected. We study the geometric properties of minimum RBP spanning graphs and the algorithmic problems associated with computing them. Specifically, we show that the general problem can be solved in polynomial time using matroid techniques. In addition, we discuss more efficient algorithms for the case in which points are located on a line or a circle, and also describe a fast $(\frac 12\rho+1)$-approximation algorithm, where $\rho$ is the Steiner ratio.

Inspired by the Japanese game Pachinko, we study simple (perfectly "inelastic" collisions) dynamics of a unit ball falling amidst point obstacles (pins) in the plane. A classic example is that a checkerboard grid of pins produces the binomial distribution, but what probability distributions result from different pin placements? In the 50-50 model, where the pins form a subset of this grid, not all probability distributions are possible, but surprisingly the uniform distribution is possible for $\{1,2,4,8,16\}$ possible drop locations. Furthermore, every probability distribution can be approximated arbitrarily closely, and every dyadic probability distribution can be divided by a suitable power of $2$ and then constructed exactly (along with extra "junk" outputs). In a more general model, if a ball hits a pin off center, it falls left or right accordingly. Then we prove a universality result: any distribution of $n$ dyadic probabilities, each specified by $k$ bits, can be constructed using $O(n k^2)$ pins, which is close to the information-theoretic lower bound of $\Omega(n k)$.

We study the problem of visibility in polyhedral terrains in the presence of multiple viewpoints. We consider a triangulated terrain with $m>1$ viewpoints (or guards) located on the terrain surface. A point on the terrain is considered \emph{visible} if it has an unobstructed line of sight to at least one viewpoint. We study several natural and fundamental visibility structures: (1) the visibility map, which is a partition of the terrain into visible and invisible regions; (2) the \emph{colored} visibility map, which is a partition of the terrain into regions whose points have exactly the same visible viewpoints; and (3) the Voronoi visibility map, which is a partition of the terrain into regions whose points have the same closest visible viewpoint. We study the complexity of each structure for both 1.5D and 2.5D terrains, and provide efficient algorithms to construct them. Our algorithm for the visibility map in 2.5D terrains improves on the only existing algorithm in this setting. We give subquadratic algorithms that, given two necklaces each with n beads at arbitrary positions, compute the optimal rotation of the necklaces to best align the beads. Here alignment is measured according to the p norm of the vector of distances between pairs of beads from opposite necklaces in the best perfect matching. We show surprisingly different results for p = 1, p even, and p = \infty. For p even, we reduce the problem to standard convolution, while for p = \infty and p = 1, we reduce the problem to (min, +) convolution and (median, +) convolution. Then we solve the latter two convolution problems in subquadratic time, which are interesting results in their own right. These results shed some light on the classic sorting X + Y problem, because the convolutions can be viewed as computing order statistics on the antidiagonals of the X + Y matrix. All of our algorithms run in o(n^2) time, whereas the obvious algorithms for these problems run in \Theta(n^2) time.

Given an arrangement of lines in the plane, what is the minimum number $c$ of colors required to color the lines so that no cell of the arrangement is monochromatic? In this paper we give bounds on the number c both for the above question, as well as some of its variations. We redefine these problems as geometric hypergraph coloring problems. If we define $\Hlinecell$ as the hypergraph where vertices are lines and edges represent cells of the arrangement, the answer to the above question is equal to the chromatic number of this hypergraph. We prove that this chromatic number is between $\Omega (\log n / \log\log n)$. and $O(\sqrt{n})$. Similarly, we give bounds on the minimum size of a subset $S$ of the intersections of the lines in $\mathcal{A}$ such that every cell is bounded by at least one of the vertices in $S$. This may be seen as a problem on guarding cells with vertices when the lines act as obstacles. The problem can also be defined as the minimum vertex cover problem in the hypergraph $\Hvertexcell$, the vertices of which are the line intersections, and the hyperedges are vertices of a cell. Analogously, we consider the problem of touching the lines with a minimum subset of the cells of the arrangement, which we identify as the minimum vertex cover problem in the $\Hcellzone$ hypergraph., Comment: Abstract appeared in the proceedings of EuroCG 2012. In a witness rectangle graph (WRG) on vertex point set P with respect to witness points set W in the plane, two points x, y in P are adjacent whenever the open isothetic rectangle with x and y as opposite corners contains at least one point in W. WRGs are representative of a a larger family of witness proximity graphs introduced in two previous papers. We study graph-theoretic properties of WRGs. We prove that any WRG has at most two non-trivial connected components. We bound the diameter of the non-trivial connected components of a WRG in both the one-component and two-component cases. In the latter case, we prove that a graph is representable as a WRG if and only if each component is a connected co-interval graph, thereby providing a complete characterization of WRGs of this type. We also completely characterize trees drawable as WRGs. In addition, we prove that a WRG with no isolated vertices has domination number at most four. Moreover, we show that any combinatorial graph can be drawn as a WRG using a combination of positive and negative witnesses. A drawing of a given (abstract) tree that is a minimum spanning tree of the vertex set is considered aesthetically pleasing. However, such a drawing can only exist if the tree has maximum degree at most 6. What can be said for trees of higher degree? We approach this question by supposing that a partition or covering of the tree by subtrees of bounded degree is given. Then we show that if the partition or covering satisfies some natural properties, then there is a drawing of the entire tree such that each of the given subtrees is drawn as a minimum spanning tree of its vertex set.

We consider a generalization of the Gabriel graph, the witness Gabriel graph. Given a set of vertices P and a set of witnesses W in the plane, there is an edge ab between two points of P in the witness Gabriel graph GG-(P,W) if and only if the closed disk with diameter ab does not contain any witness point (besides possibly a and/or b). Proximity graphs are used in several areas in which a neighborliness relationship for input data sets is a useful tool in their analysis, and have also received substantial attention from the graph drawing community, as they are a natural way of implicitly representing graphs. However, as a tool for graph representation, proximity graphs have some limitations that may be overcome with suitable generalizations. We introduce a generalization, witness graphs, that encompasses both the goal of more power and flexibility for graph drawing issues and a wider spectrum for neighborhood analysis. We study in detail two concrete examples, both related to Delaunay graphs, and consider as well some problems on stabbing geometric objects and point set discrimination, that can be naturally described in terms of witness graphs., Comment: 27 pages. We introduce a notion of $k$-convexity and explore polygons in the plane that have this property. Polygons which are \mbox{$k$-convex} can be triangulated with fast yet simple algorithms. However, recognizing them in general is a 3SUM-hard problem. We give a characterization of \mbox{$2$-convex} polygons, a particularly interesting class, and show how to recognize them in \mbox{$O(n \log n)$} time. A description of their shape is given as well, which leads to Erd\H{o}s-Szekeres type results regarding subconfigurations of their vertex sets. Finally, we introduce the concept of generalized geometric permutations, and show that their number can be exponential in the number of \mbox{$2$-convex} objects considered., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

For a graph $G$ and integer $k\geq1$, we define the token graph $F_k(G)$ to be the graph with vertex set all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $F_k(G)$ whenever their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. Thus vertices of $F_k(G)$ correspond to configurations of $k$ indistinguishable tokens placed at distinct vertices of $G$, where two configurations are adjacent whenever one configuration can be reached from the other by moving one token along an edge from its current position to an unoccupied vertex. This paper introduces token graphs and studies some of their properties including: connectivity, diameter, cliques, chromatic number, Hamiltonian paths, and Cartesian products of token graphs.

We prove the following generalised empty pentagon theorem: for every integer $\ell \geq 2$, every sufficiently large set of points in the plane contains $\ell$ collinear points or an empty pentagon. As an application, we settle the next open case of the "big line or big clique" conjecture of K\'ara, P\'or, and Wood [\emph{Discrete Comput. Geom.} 34(3):497--506, 2005].

A highway H is a line in the plane on which one can travel at a greater speed than in the remaining plane. One can choose to enter and exit H at any point. The highway time distance between a pair of points is the minimum time required to move from one point to the other, with optional use of H. The highway hull HH(S,H) of a point set S is the minimal set containing S as well as the shortest paths between all pairs of points in HH(S,H), using the highway time distance. We provide a Theta(n log n) worst-case time algorithm to find the highway hull under the L_1 metric, as well as an O(n log^2 n) time algorithm for the L_2 metric which improves the best known result of O(n^2). We also define and construct the useful region of the plane: the region that a highway must intersect in order that the shortest path between at least one pair of points uses the highway.

Given a set of unit-disks in the plane with union area $A$, what fraction of $A$ can be covered by selecting a pairwise disjoint subset of the disks? Rado conjectured 1/4 and proved $1/4.41$. Motivated by the problem of channel-assignment for wireless access points, in which use of 3 channels is a standard practice, we consider a variant where the selected subset of disks must be 3-colourable with disks of the same colour pairwise-disjoint. For this variant of the problem, we conjecture that it is always possible to cover at least $1/1.41$ of the union area and prove $1/2.09$. To untangle a geometric graph means to move some of the vertices so that the resulting geometric graph has no crossings. Pach and Tardos [Discrete Comput. Geom., 2002] asked if every n-vertex geometric planar graph can be untangled while keeping at least n^\epsilon vertices fixed. We answer this question in the affirmative with \epsilon=1/4. The previous best known bound was \Omega((\log n / \log\log n)^{1/2}). We also consider untangling geometric trees. It is known that every n-vertex geometric tree can be untangled while keeping at least (n/3)^{1/2} vertices fixed, while the best upper bound was O(n\log n)^{2/3}. We answer a question of Spillner and Wolff [arXiv:0709.0170 2007] by closing this gap for untangling trees. In particular, we show that for infinitely many values of n, there is an n-vertex geometric tree that cannot be untangled while keeping more than 3(n^{1/2}-1) vertices fixed. This paper studies non-crossing geometric perfect matchings. Two such perfect matchings are \emph{compatible} if they have the same vertex set and their union is also non-crossing. Our first result states that for any two perfect matchings $M$ and $M'$ of the same set of $n$ points, for some $k\in\Oh{\log n}$, there is a sequence of perfect matchings $M=M_0,M_1,...,M_k=M'$, such that each $M_i$ is compatible with $M_{i+1}$. This improves the previous best bound of $k\leq n-2$. We then study the conjecture: \emph{every perfect matching with an even number of edges has an edge-disjoint compatible perfect matching}. We introduce a sequence of stronger conjectures that imply this conjecture, and prove the strongest of these conjectures in the case of perfect matchings that consist of vertical and horizontal segments. Finally, we prove that every perfect matching with $n$ edges has an edge-disjoint compatible matching with approximately $4n/5$ edges., Comment: improved exposition and improved results

The assignment problem takes as input two finite point sets S and T and establishes a correspondence between points in S and points in T, such that each point in S maps to exactly one point in T, and each point in T maps to at least one point in S. In the study of depth functions it is important to decide whether we want such a function to be sensitive to multimodality or not. In this paper we analyze the Delaunay depth function, which is sensitive to multimodality and compare this depth with others, as convex depth and location depth. We study the stratification that Delaunay depth induces in the point set (layers) and in the whole plane (levels), and we develop an algorithm for computing the Delaunay depth contours, associated to a point set in the plane, with running time O(n log^2 n). The depth of a query point p with respect to a data set S in the plane is the depth of p in the union of S and p. When S and p are given in the input the Delaunay depth can be computed in O(n log n), and we prove that this value is optimal., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

We introduce a new measure for planar point sets S that captures a combinatorial distance that S is from being a convex set: The reflexivity rho(S) of S is given by the smallest number of reflex vertices in a simple polygonalization of S. We prove various combinatorial bounds and provide efficient algorithms to compute reflexivity, both exactly (in special cases) and approximately (in general). Our study considers also some closely related quantities, such as the convex cover number kappa_c(S) of a planar point set, which is the smallest number of convex chains that cover S, and the convex partition number kappa_p(S), which is given by the smallest number of convex chains with pairwise-disjoint convex hulls that cover S. In this paper, we give upper and lower bounds on the number of Steiner points required to construct a strictly convex quadrilateral mesh for a planar point set. In particular, we show that $3{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ internal Steiner points are always sufficient for a convex quadrilateral mesh of $n$ points in the plane.
