1. Programming for older children in School Age Care: Adult and child engagement with developmental pedagogies

Abstract

How to work with older children has been ongoing question in Australian School Age Care (SAC) for over 30 years. Children aged 10–12 years are often spoken of as a problematic Other whose pose a risk to the younger children who attend SAC in higher proportions. This article aims to address the gap in research about what practices might work with this age group. It draws on a qualitative study conducted with SAC practitioners and older children who attend SAC. In semi-structured interviews, practitioners were asked about what strategies they employed with older children. These strategies are then viewed in relation to the perspectives of older children who were consulted via participatory methods and ethnography about what good SAC might look like. The research explores two approaches that draw on developmental knowledges, the use of separate spaces and resources, and a role called apprentice educator. Whilst older children appear to value strategies like age-segregated spaces and resources, they are less likely to take up adult-like, apprentice educator roles curated for them by practitioners. Older children’s responses to these strategies can be understood as powerful acts around developmental discourses that construct and reconstruct the category of older child in SAC.

Abstract

Objective: Determine the accuracy of a novel technique for confirmation of the day of ovulation and prediction of ovulation in subsequent cycles for the purpose of conception using a skin-worn sensor in a population with ovulatory dysfunction.Methods: A total of 80 participants recorded consecutive overnight temperatures using a skin-worn sensor at the same time as a commercially available vaginal sensor for a total of 205 reproductive cycles. The vaginal sensor and its associated algorithm were used to determine the day of ovulation, and the ovulation results obtained using the skin-worn sensor and its associated algorithm were assessed for comparative accuracy alongside a number of other statistical techniques, with a further assessment of the same skin-derived data by means of the “three over six” rule. A number of parameters were used to divide the data into separate comparative groups, and further secondary statistical analyses were performed.Results: The skin-worn sensor and its associated algorithm (together labeled “SWS”) were 66% accurate for determining the day of ovulation (±1 day) or the absence of ovulation and 90% accurate for determining the fertile window (ovulation day ±3 days) in the total study population in comparison to the results obtained from the vaginal sensor and its associated algorithm (together labeled “VS”).Conclusion: SWS is a useful tool for confirming the fertile window and absence of ovulation (anovulation) in a population with ovulatory dysfunction, both known and determined by means of the timing of ovulation. The body site where the skin-worn sensor was worn (arm or wrist) did not appear to affect the accuracy. Prior diagnosis of known causes of ovulatory dysfunction appeared to affect the accuracy to a lesser extent than those cycles grouped into late ovulation and “early and normal ovulation” groups. SWS is a potentially useful tool for predicting ovulation in subsequent cycles, with greater accuracy obtained for the “normal ovulation” group.

Abstract

Invariant cross sections of intermediate mass fragments in peripheral collisions of Au on Au at incident energies between 40 and 150 AMeV have been measured with the 4-pi multi-detector INDRA. The maximum of the fragment production is located near mid-rapidity at the lower energies and moves gradually towards the projectile and target rapidities as the energy is increased. Schematic calculations within an extended Goldhaber model suggest that the observed cross-section distributions and their evolution with energy are predominantly the result of the clustering requirement for the emerging fragments and of their Coulomb repulsion from the projectile and target residues. Abstract

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars grown in the Arkansas Delta have undergone tremendous genetic and cultural management changes in recent years, which has led to the need to re-evaluate the biomass, nutrient accumulation, and nutrient requirements in these modern cultivars. Our research aims to determine the dry matter production and biomass accumulation of two modern cotton cultivars (Deltapine 2038 and NexGen 4936) produced in a furrow-irrigated system. Treatments included two rates of fertilizer designed to apply 100% and 125% of the current University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture's Soil Test Laboratory fertilizer rate recommendations for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Fertilizer treatments were applied preplant ([100% = 36 lb N/ac, 70 lb P2O5/ac, 60 lb K2O/ac] and [125% = 45 lb N/ac, 88 P2O5/ac, 75 lb K2O/ac]) and at early squaring (74 lb N/ac and 93 lb N/ac for the 100% and 125%, respectively). The research was conducted in 2021 at the Lon Mann Cotton Research Station on a Memphis silt loam. Preliminary results show no difference in biomass accumulation between either the cultivars or fertilizer treatments. The research will be repeated in 2022 on silt loam and clay soils to determine if this trend is consistent across environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Late-Season Nitrogen Application on Hybrid Rice and the Effects on Grain and Milling Yield.

Abstract

Hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) has accounted for nearly 50% of Arkansas' total rice acres harvested during the last decade. Previous research conducted on the current recommendation of applying 30 lb nitrogen (N)/ac to hybrid rice cultivars at the late-boot growth stage indicated an increase in both grain and milling yields. The conclusions from previous research suggested that significant increases in grain and milling yields were due to the addition of a late-season N application; however, more research is needed to determine if the late-season N application is necessary due to inconsistent results. A study was initiated to examine grain and milling yields on hybrid rice when implementing a late-season N application across varying preflood N application rates. The RiceTec (RT) hybrids, RT Gemini 214 CL and RT XP753, were used in this study and are the most common hybrid rice cultivars grown in Arkansas. These two cultivars were planted at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture's Pine Tree Research Station (PTRS) near Colt, Arkansas, on a silt loam soil, and the Rohwer Research Station (RRS) near Rohwer, Arkansas on a clay soil. Results indicate that there is a positive impact from the late-season N application on both grain and milling yields from both cultivars at each of the locations. When lateseason N was applied, there was an increase of 11 to 16 bu./ac across the two locations. Also, the late-season N application resulted in a significant increase in head rice milling yield from 1% to 5% across both locations but showed no significant difference in total rice. When observing head rice yields from various plant components (main stem vs. tillers) within the same plots, there is a significant increase in head rice yield when applying the late-season N that is equal across both main steams and tillers. It is apparent that the late-season N application results in significant increases in both grain and milling yields. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship contributing to increased grain yield and milling yields when late-season N is applied to hybrid rice and define the physiological mechanism for this response and help predict when and where it will occur. Abstract

The popularity of cover crops within Arkansas continues to increase, and more producers are implementing them into their corn and soybean rotations. A need for Arkansas-specific data on the effects of long-term no-till and cover crop implementation on corn performance will be essential. A study was established to determine the effects of various winter cover crop treatments on corn stand establishment and grain yield. Cover crop treatments included a winter fallow, a cereal rye every year, an Austrian winter pea every year, an alternating cover crop where a cereal was planted prior to soybean, and a legume was planted prior to corn, and a cover crop species blend based on the soil health recommendation (blend of cereals and legumes). During the 2020 growing season, there were no significant differences in corn plant population across all cover crop treatments. The data for stand establishment was highly variable across treatments and related to surface residue at planting, with higher surface residue leading to lower plant populations. Corn grain yield was significantly influenced by winter cover crop treatment (P < 0.001), with the winter fallow resulting in the lowest overall yield (82 bu./ac) and the alternating cover crop resulting in the highest (159 bu./ac). The yield data are not supported by the corn plant population data as the highest corn plant population resulted in the lowest overall corn grain yield. These results suggest that the implementation of cover crops into corn production systems is more complex than for other crops such as soybean. 32. Effects of the combination of favipiravir (T-705) and oseltamivir on influenza a virus infections in mice

Favipiravir (T-705 [6-fluoro-3-hydroxy-2-pyrazinecarboxamide]) and oseltamivir were combined to treat influenza virus A/NWS/33 (H1N1), A/Victoria/3/75 (H3N2), and A/Duck/MN/1525/81 (H5N1) infections. T-705 alone inhibited viruses in cell culture at 1.4 to 4.3 µM. Oseltamivir inhibited these three viruses in cells at 3.7, 0.02, and 0.16 µM and in neuraminidase assays at 0.94, 0.46, and 2.31 nM, respectively. Oral treatments were given twice daily to mice for 5 to 7 days starting, generally, 24 h after infection. Survival resulting from 5 days of oseltamivir treatment (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg/day) was significantly better in combination with 20 mg/kg of body weight/day of T-705 against the H1N1 infection. Treatment of the H3N2 infection required 50 mg/kg/day of oseltamivir for 7 days to achieve 60% protection; 25 mg/kg/day was ineffective. T-705 was >70% protective at 50 to 100 mg/kg/day but inactive at 25 mg/kg/day. The combination of inhibitors (25 mg/kg/day each) increased survival to 90%. 33. Host-plant genotypic diversity and community genetic interactions mediate aphid spatial distribution.

Abstract

Genetic variation in plants can influence the community structure of associated species, through both direct and indirect interactions. Herbivorous insects are known to feed on a restricted range of plants, and herbivore preference and performance can vary among host plants within a species due to genetically based traits of the plant (e.g., defensive compounds). In a natural system, we expect to find genetic variation within both plant and herbivore communities and we expect this variation to influence species interactions. Using a three-species plant-aphid model system, we investigated the effect of genetic diversity on genetic interactions among the community members. Our system involved a host plant (Hordeum vulgare) that was shared by an aphid (Sitobion avenae) and a hemi-parasitic plant (Rhinanthus minor). We showed that aphids cluster more tightly in a genetically diverse host-plant community than in a genetic monoculture, with host-plant genetic diversity explaining up to 24% of the variation in aphid distribution. This is driven by differing preferences of the aphids to the different plant genotypes and their resulting performance on these plants. Within the two host-plant diversity levels, aphid spatial distribution was influenced by an interaction among the aphid's own genotype, the genotype of a competing aphid, the origin of the parasitic plant population, and the host-plant genotype. Thus, the overall outcome involves both direct (i.e., host plant to aphid) and indirect (i.e., parasitic plant to aphid) interactions across all these species. These results show that a complex genetic environment influences the distribution of herbivores among host plants. Thus, in genetically diverse systems, interspecific genetic interactions between the host plant and herbivore can influence the population dynamics of the system and could also structure local communities. When parasitic plants and aphid herbivores share a host, both direct and indirect ecological effects (IEEs) can influence evolutionary processes. We used a hemiparasitic plant (Rhinanthus minor), a grass host (Hordeum vulgare) and a cereal aphid (Sitobion avenae) to investigate the genetics of IEEs between the aphid and the parasitic plant, and looked to see how these might affect or be influenced by the genetic diversity of the host plants. Survival of R. minor depended on the parasite's population of origin, the genotypes of the aphids sharing the host and the genetic diversity in the host plant community. Hence the indirect effects of the aphids on the parasitic plants depended on the genetic environment of the system. Here, we show that genetic variation can be important in determining the outcome of IEEs. Therefore, IEEs have the potential to influence evolutionary processes and the continuity of species interactions over time.

An amantadine-resistant influenza A/Duck/MN/1525/81 (H5N1) virus was developed from the low-pathogenic North American wild-type (amantadine-sensitive) virus for studying treatment of infections in cell culture and in mice. Double combinations of amantadine, oseltamivir (or the cell culture-active form, oseltamivir carboxylate), and ribavirin were used. Amantadine-oseltamivir carboxylate and amantadine-ribavirin combinations showed synergistic interactions over a range of doses against wild-type virus in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell culture, but oseltamivir carboxylate-ribavirin combinations did not. Primarily additive interactions were seen with oseltamivir carboxylate-ribavirin combinations against amantadine-resistant virus. The presence of amantadine in drug combinations against the resistant virus did not improve activity. The wild-type and amantadine-resistant viruses were lethal to mice by intranasal instillation. The resistant virus infection could not be treated with amantadine up to 100 mg/kg body weight/day, whereas the wild-type virus infection was treatable with oral doses of 10 (weakly effective) to 100 mg/kg/day administered twice a day for 5 days starting 4 h prior to virus exposure. Drug combination studies showed that treatment of the amantadine-resistant virus infection with amantadine-oseltamivir or amantadine-ribavirin combinations was not significantly better than using oseltamivir or ribavirin alone. In contrast, the oseltamivir-ribavirin (25- and 75-mg/kg/day combination) treatments produced significant reductions in mortality. The wild-type virus infection was markedly reduced in severity by all three combinations (amantadine, 10 mg/kg/ day combined with the other compounds at 20 or 40 mg/kg/day) compared to monotherapy with the three compounds. Results indicate a lack of benefit of amantadine in combinations against amantadine-resistant virus, but positive benefits in combinations against amantadine-sensitive virus.

Favipiravir (T-705 [6-fluoro-3-hydroxy-2-pyrazinecarboxamide]) and oseltamivir were combined to treat influenza virus A/NWS/33 (H1N1), A/Victoria/3/75 (H3N2), and A/Duck/MN/1525/81 (H5N1) infections. T-705 alone inhibited viruses in cell culture at 1.4 to 4.3 µM. Oseltamivir inhibited these three viruses in cells at 3.7, 0.02, and 0.16 µM and in neuraminidase assays at 0.94, 0.46, and 2.31 nM, respectively. Oral treatments were given twice daily to mice for 5 to 7 days starting, generally, 24 h after infection. Survival resulting from 5 days of oseltamivir treatment (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg/day) was significantly better in combination with 20 mg/kg of body weight/day of T-705 against the H1N1 infection. Treatment of the H3N2 infection required 50 mg/kg/day of oseltamivir for 7 days to achieve 60% protection; 25 mg/kg/day was ineffective. T-705 was >70% protective at 50 to 100 mg/kg/day but inactive at 25 mg/kg/day. The combination of inhibitors (25 mg/kg/day each) increased survival to 90%. Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; Invariant transverse-velocity spectra of intermediate-mass fragments were measured with the 4-pi multi-detector system INDRA for collisions of Au on Au at incident energies between 40 and 150 MeV per nucleon. Their scaling properties as a function of incident energy and atomic number Z are used to distinguish and characterize the emissions in (i) peripheral collisions at the projectile and target rapidities, and in (ii) central and (iii) peripheral collisions near mid-rapidity. The importance of dynamical effects is evident in all three cases and their origin is discussed.

Abstract

This article aims at demonstrating that the study of statistical distributions in information sciences provides the tools to apprehend and define concepts related with information use and production. One will briefly outline what should be infometrics laws, then one will define what is in our sense duality and statistic information field. Simple mathematical milestones will be given. The study relies on data gathered in libraries, in a document supplier, on Web site visits. These data allow to formalize and modelize processes of information use and production . Thus, these data lead to define the concept of infometric field of use and production, with help of mathematics.
