We introduce a quantum spin Hall semimetal or Fermi liquid characterized with a Z2 topological invariant, measurable through circularly polarized light. We propose its engineering through two topological metallic band structures in crystals on the honeycomb lattice, with spin-orbit interaction, realizable through the interplay of a charge or spin density wave substrate and Zeeman effects, in between a quantum spin Hall and a quantum anomalous Hall insulator. These systems show topologically protected helical edge or photo-induced currents.

We present a comprehensive theoretical study of interacting and disordered topological phases of coupled Kitaev wires, which may support further realistic applications of Majorana fermions. We develop a variety of analytical, mathematical and numerical methods for one and two-coupled wires, associated with a topological marker accessible from real-space correlation functions on the wire(s). We verify the stability of the topological superconducting phase and quantify disorder effects close to the quantum phase transitions, e.g. through two-point correlation functions or using a renormalization group (RG) analysis of disorder. We show for the first time that the double critical Ising (DCI) phase -- a fractional Majorana liquid characterized by a pair of half central charges and topological numbers -- is stabilized by strong interactions against disorder which respects the inversion symmetry between the wires (ie. parity conservation on each wire). In the presence of an inter-wire hopping term, the DCI phase turns into a protected topological phase with a bulk gap. We show how the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological index of a one-dimensional topological p-wave superconductor can be revealed when driving with a classical vector potential i.e. an electromagnetic wave, through the light-induced transition probabilities and the profile of the induced quasiparticles population. As a function of driving frequency $\omega$, it is possible to obtain a measure of this topological invariant from the resonance envelope classifying the two distinct topological phases of the short-range Kitaev wire. We propose to probe the topological phase transition in the model through the responses of the global capacitance in the presence of the light field and through the Josephson current between the wire and the proximity coupled bulk superconductor. We have recently identified a protected topological semimetal in graphene which presents a zero-energy edge mode robust to disorder and interactions. Here, we address the characteristics of this semimetal and show that the $\mathbb{Z}$ topological invariant of the Hall conductivity associated to the lowest energy band can be equivalently measured from the resonant response to circularly polarized light resolved at the Dirac points. The (non-quantized) conductivity responses of the intermediate energy bands, including the Fermi surface, also give rise to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant. We emphasize on the bulk-edge correspondence as a protected topological half metal, i.e. one spin-population polarized in the plane is in the insulating phase related to the robust edge mode while the other is in the metallic regime. The quantized transport at the edges is equivalent to a $\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{2}$ conductance for spin polarizations along $z$ direction. The quest to identify and observe Majorana fermions in physics and condensed-matter systems remains an important challenge. Here, we introduce a qubit (spin-$1/2$) from the occurrence of two delocalized zero-energy Majorana fermions in a model of two spins-$1/2$ on the Bloch sphere within the fractional one-half topological state. We address specific protocols in time with circularly polarized light and the protection of this delocalized spin-$1/2$ state related to quantum information protocols. We also show how disorder can play a positive and important role allowing singlet-triplet transitions and resulting in an additional elongated region for the fractional phase, demonstrating the potential of this platform related to applications in topologically protected quantum information. A topological phase can be engineered in quantum physics from the Bloch sphere of a spin-1/2 showing an hedgehog structure as a result of a radial magnetic field. We elaborate on a relation between the formation of an entangled wavefunction at one pole, in a two-spins model, and an interesting pair of one-half topological numbers. Similar to Cooper pairs in superconductors, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair or Bell state produces a half flux quantization, which here refers to the halved flux of the Berry curvature on the surface. These 1/2-numbers also reveal the presence of a free Majorana fermion at a pole. The topological responses can be measured when driving from north to south and also from a circularly polarized field at the poles revealing the quantized or half-quantized nature of the protected transverse currents. We introduce a local spectroscopic method in real space to probe the topological properties of a circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) array generalizing previous approaches from one to two dimensions in the plane. As an application, we develop the theory of microwave light propagating in the local probe capacitively coupled to the cQED array associated to a bosonic Haldane model. Interestingly, we show that the measured reflection coefficient, resolved in frequency through the resonance, reveals the geometrical properties of the model and the topological phase transition. Graphene is a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal showing interesting properties as a result of its dispersion relation with both quasiparticles and quasiholes or matter and anti-matter. We introduce a topological nodal ring semimetal in graphene with a quantized quantum Hall response, a robust one-dimensional chiral edge mode and a quadratic Fermi-liquid spectrum for the quasiparticles and quasiholes in the bulk. The bulk band degeneracy at the Fermi energy is protected through a Z2 symmetry related to the two spin polarizations of an electron and a double-orthogonality structure in the sublattice and spin quantum numbers of the two crossing eigenstates. We investigate the topological phases of two one-dimensional (1D) interacting superconducting wires and propose topological markers directly measurable from ground state correlation functions. These quantities remain powerful tools in the presence of couplings and interactions. We show with the density matrix renormalization group that the double critical Ising (DCI) phase discovered in [1] is a fractional topological phase with gapless Majorana modes in the bulk, and a one-half topological invariant per wire. Using both numerics and quantum field theoretical methods, we show that the phase diagram remains stable in the presence of an inter-wire hopping amplitude $t_{\bot}$ at length scales below $\sim 1/t_{\bot}$. A large inter-wire hopping amplitude results in the emergence of two integer topological phases, stable also at large interactions. They host one edge mode per boundary shared between both wires. At large interactions, the two wires are described by Mott physics, with the $t_{\bot}$ hopping amplitude resulting in a paramagnetic order., Comment: 34 pages, 32 figures

Here, we reveal our recent progress on a geometrical approach of quantum physics and topological crystals linking with Dirac magnetic monopoles and gauge fields through classical electrodynamics. The Bloch sphere of a quantum spin-1/2 particle acquires an integer topological charge in the presence of a radial magnetic field. We show that global topological properties are encoded from the poles of the surface allowing a correspondence between smooth fields, metric and quantum distance with the square of the topological number. The information is transported from each pole to the equatorial plane on a thin Dirac string. We develop the theory, "quantum topometry" in space and time, and present applications on transport from a Newtonian approach, on a quantized photo-electric effect from circular dichroism of light towards topological band structures of crystals. Edge modes related to topological lattice models are resolved analytically when deforming the sphere or ellipse onto a cylinder. Topological properties of the quantum Hall effect, quantum anomalous Hall effect and quantum spin Hall effect on the honeycomb lattice can be measured locally in the Brillouin zone from light-matter coupling. The formalism allows us to include interaction effects from the momentum space. Interactions may also result in fractional entangled geometry within the curved space. We develop a relation between entangled wavefunction in quantum mechanics, coherent superposition of geometries, a way to one-half topological numbers and Majorana fermions. We describe a quantum dynamo effect in a driven system coupled to a harmonic oscillator describing a cavity mode or to a collection of modes forming an Ohmic bosonic bath. When the system Hamiltonian changes in time, this induces a dynamical field in the bosonic modes having resonant frequencies with the driving velocity. This field opposes the change of the external driving field in a way reminiscent of Faraday's law of induction, justifying the term 'quantum dynamo effect'. For the specific situation of a periodically driven spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ on the Bloch sphere, we show that the work done by rolling the spin from north to south pole can efficiently be converted into a coherent displacement of the resonant bosonic modes, the effect thus corresponds to a work-to-work conversion and allows to interpret this transmitted energy into the bath as work. We study this effect, its performance and limitations in detail for a driven spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ in the presence of a radial magnetic field addressing a relation with topological systems through the formation of an effective charge in the core of the sphere. We show that the dynamo effect is directly related to the dynamically measured topology of this spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and thus in the adiabatic limit provides a topologically protected method to convert driving work into a coherent field in the reservoir. We study the Hubbard model with time-reversal invariant flux and spin-orbit coupling and position-dependent onsite energies on the kagome lattice, using numerical and analytical methods. In particular, we perform calculations using real space dynamical mean-field theory (R-DMFT). To study the topological properties of the system, we use the topological Hamiltonian approach. We obtain a rich phase diagram: for weak and intermediate interactions, depending on the model parameters, the system is in the band insulator, topological insulator, or metallic phase, while for strong interactions the system is in the Mott insulator phase. We also investigate the magnetic phases that occur in this system. The search for topological superconductors is one of the most pressing and challenging questions in condensed matter and material research. Despite some early suggestions that doping a topological insulator might be a successful recipe to find topological superconductors, until today there is no general understanding of the relationship of the topology of the superconductor and the topology of its underlying normal state system. One of the major obstacles is the strong effect of the Fermi surface and its subsequent pairing tendencies within the Hubbard model framework, usually preventing a detailed comparison between different topological superconducting systems. Here we present an analysis of doped insulators - topological and trivial - where the dominant Fermi surface effects have been equalized. To describe a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particle on the Bloch sphere with a radial magnetic field and topological states of matter from the reciprocal space, we introduce $C$ square ($C^2$) as a local formulation of the global topological invariant. For the Haldane model on the honeycomb lattice, this $C^2$ can be measured from the Dirac points through circularly polarized light related to the high-symmetry $M$ point(s). For the quantum spin Hall effect and the Kane-Mele model, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological number robust to interactions can be measured locally from a correspondence between the pfaffian and light. The description of interactions in strongly-correlated topological phases of matter remains a challenge. Here, we develop a stochastic functional approach for interacting topological insulators including both charge and spin channels. We find that the Mott transition of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model may be described by the variational principle with one equation. We present different views of this equation from the electron Green's function, the free-energy and the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. The band gap remains finite at the transition and the Mott phase is characterized by antiferromagnetism in the $x-y$ plane. The interacting topological phase is described through a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ number related to helical edge modes. We study the topological properties of a spin-orbit coupled Hofstadter model on the Kagome lattice. The model is time-reversal invariant and realizes a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator as a result of artificial gauge fields. We develop topological arguments to describe this system showing three inequivalent sites in a unit cell and a flat band in its energy spectrum in addition to the topological dispersive energy bands. We show the stability of the topological phase towards spin-flip processes and different types of on-site potentials. In particular, we also address the situation where on-site energies may differ inside a unit cell. Moreover, a staggered potential on the lattice may realize topological phases for the half-filled situation. Another interesting result is the occurrence of a topological phase for large on-site energies. We study the superfluid response and localization dynamics from static and mobile impurities. The superfluidity is formed in the rung-Mott phase of a bosonic ladder model producing spin-Meissner currents induced by a $\mathbb{U}(1)$ gauge field or a uniform magnetic field. Impurities are described through two-state systems which act as a two-peak random potential. An impurity sits either at the top or at the bottom of the ladder on each rung equally, producing a telegraph signal. The impurities-matter coupling gives rise to a classical Ising symmetry for static and mobile impurities associated to the inversion symmetry of the two legs of the ladder. From the decoupled rungs limit, we also identify a local $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory for mobile impurities. The properties of the system are studied from an effective quantum spin model including the possibility of four-body coupling in the limit of a strong interaction between bosons and impurities. Through analytical approaches and numerical exact diagonalization, we study the superfluid currents both in the weakly-coupled and strongly-coupled rungs limits for the bosons. In the weakly-coupled rungs situation, we find a smooth power-law localization whereas the strongly-coupled rungs limit produces a steep localization or insulating phase for various configurations of the two-peak random potential. In the strongly disordered situation, through entanglement and bipartite fluctuation measures, we also identify a many-body localization regime in time after a quench of the system when prepared in a N\' eel state., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures

We investigate the influence of a weakly nonlinear Josephson bath consisting of a chain of Josephson junctions on the dynamics of a small quantum system (LC oscillator). Focusing on the regime where the charging energy is the largest energy scale, we perturbatively calculate the correlation function of the Josephson bath to the leading order in the Josephson energy divided by the charging energy while keeping the cosine potential exactly. When the variation of the charging energy along the chain ensures fast decay of the bath correlation function, the dynamics of the LC oscillator that is weakly and capacitively coupled to the Josephson bath can be solved through the Markovian master equation. We establish a duality relation for the Josephson bath between the regimes of large charging and Josephson energies respectively. The results can be applied to cases where the charging energy either is nonuniformly engineered or disordered in the chain. Furthermore, we find that the Josephson bath may become non-Markovian when the temperature is increased beyond the zero-temperature limit in that the bath correlation function gets shifted by a constant and does not decay with time., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

This review illustrates how Local Fermi Liquid (LFL) theories describe the strongly correlated and coherent low-energy dynamics of quantum dot devices. This approach consists in an effective elastic scattering theory, accounting exactly for strong correlations. Here, we focus on the mesoscopic capacitor and recent experiments achieving Coulomb-induced quantum state transfer. We propose a two-spin quantum-mechanical model with applied magnetic fields acting on the Poincar\'e-Bloch sphere, to reveal a new class of topological energy bands with Chern number one half for each spin-1/2. The mechanism behind this fractional topology is a two-spin product state at the north pole and a maximally entangled state close to the south pole. The fractional Chern number of each spin can be measured through the magnetizations at the poles. We study a precise protocol where the spin dynamics in time reflects the Landau-Zener physics associated with energy band crossing effects. We show a correspondence between the two-spin system and topological bilayer models on a honeycomb lattice. We develop a stochastic description of the topological properties in an interacting Chern insulator. We confirm the Mott transition's first-order nature in the interacting Haldane model on the honeycomb geometry, from a mean-field variational approach, supported by density matrix renormalization group results and Ginzburg-Landau arguments. From the Bloch sphere, we make predictions for circular dichroism of light related to the quantum Hall conductivity on the lattice and in the presence of interactions. This analysis shows that the topological number can be measured from the light response at the Dirac points. Electron-electron interactions can also produce a substantial number of particle-hole pairs above the band gap, which leads us to propose a "stochastic Chern number" as an interacting measure of the topology. The stochastic Chern number can describe disordered situations with a fluctuating staggered potential and we build an analogy between interaction-induced particle-hole pairs and temperature effects. The recently discovered material Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ shows an impressive behavior of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) conductivity driven by the interplay between ferromagnetism in the $z$ direction and antiferromagnetism in the $xy$ plane. Motivated by these facts, first we build and study a spin-1/2 model to describe the magnetism of Co-atoms on the Kagome planes. Then, we include conduction electrons which are coupled to the spins-1/2 through a strong Hund's coupling. The spin-orbit coupling results in topological low-energy bands. For 2/3 on-site occupancy, we find a topological transition from a QAH ferromagnetic insulating phase with Chern number one to a quantum spin Hall (QSH) antiferromagnetic phase. The QAH phase is metallic when slightly changing the on-site occupancy. To account for temperature effects, we include fluctuations in the direction of the Hund's coupling. We present a theoretical study of the interplay between topological p-wave superconductivity, orbital magnetic fields and quantum Hall phases in coupled wire systems. First, we calculate the phase diagram and physical observables of a fermionic ladder made of two coupled Kitaev chains, and discuss the presence of two and four Majorana zero modes. Second, we analyze hybrid systems consisting of a Kitaev chain coupled to a Luttinger liquid. By tuning the magnetic field and the carrier density, we identify quantum Hall and charge density wave phases, as well as regimes in which superconductivity is induced in the second chain by proximity effect. Finally, we consider two-dimensional systems made of weakly coupled ladders. There, we engineer a $p+ip$ superconductor and describe a generalization of the $\nu=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall phase. Casimir physics covers a wealth of phenomena where forces between macroscopic objects are induced by long range fluctuations of either classical or quantum origin. Fluctuations of the quantum electrodynamic vacuum epitomize this type of physics, but such fluctuation induced forces arise in a wide range of systems. Here we present a surprisingly never anticipated example of fluctuation induced radiation forces, stemming from spatially long ranged mesoscopic coherent fluctuations of light propagating in random media. Quite remarkably, spatially coherent light fluctuations can be thoroughly described by a hydrodynamic Langevin approach, where a properly tailored noise accounts for mesoscopic coherent effects. The light flow depends on two parameters only, the diffusion coefficient $D$ and the mobility $\sigma$, otherwise related by a Einstein relation. The mapping we present between coherent light flow and out of equilibrium hydrodynamics is easily generalisable to a large class of quantum or classical wave problems. A clear asset of this type of approach is in its dependence upon two parameters only thus making it a candidate to efficient machine learning algorithms. Moreover, the strength of these coherent fluctuating forces depends on a single and easily tunable dimensionless conductance $g$ -- analog of electronic conductance -- which encapsulates both the geometry and the scattering properties of the random medium. Hence coherent multiple light scattering offers setups where fluctuation induced forces are significantly enhanced compared to other known situations. The scarcity of measurable non equilibrium phenomena makes the present proposal particularly relevant to experimental inspections and applications, e.g. a wide variety of sensors in soft condensed matter, biophysics and quantum technologies., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, supplementary material (24 pages)

We reveal a proximity effect between a topological band (Chern) insulator described by a Haldane model and spin-polarized Dirac particles of a graphene layer. Coupling weakly the two systems through a tunneling term in the bulk, the topological Chern insulator induces a gap and an opposite Chern number on the Dirac particles at half-filling resulting in a sign flip of the Berry curvature at one Dirac point. We study different aspects of the bulk-edge correspondence and present protocols to observe the evolution of the Berry curvature as well as two counter-propagating (protected) edge modes with different velocities. In the strong-coupling limit, the energy spectrum shows flat bands. Therefore we build a perturbation theory and address further the bulk-edge correspondence. We also show the occurrence of a topological insulating phase with Chern number one when only the lowest band is filled. We generalize the effect to Haldane bilayer systems with asymmetric Semenoff masses. We study the time-dependent dynamical phase of fractional quasiparticles in quantum Hall states using Ramsey interferometry. A Ramsey two-pulse voltage modulation generates an interference term in the current noise of a quantum point contact oscillating with the dynamical phase. We show that the interference pattern probes the Green's function of the fractional quasi-particles in the time domain and reveals the fractional charge. We address both the case of a point-like tunnel junction and the case of momentum-resolved tunneling which also provides information on the speed of those quasiparticles propagating along the edge. We introduce valence bond fluctuations, or bipartite fluctuations associated to bond-bond correlation functions, to characterize quantum spin liquids and their entanglement properties. Using analytical and numerical approaches, we find an identical scaling law between valence bond fluctuations and entanglement entropy in the two-dimensional Kitaev spin model and in one-dimensional chain analogues. We also show how these valence bond fluctuations can locate quantum phase transitions between the three gapped and the gapless Majorana semi-metal phases in the honeycomb model. We then study the effect of a uniform magnetic field along the 111 direction opening a gap in the intermediate phase which becomes topological. We still obtain a robust signal to characterize the transitions towards the three gapped phases. We investigate the non-equilibrium behavior of a fully-connected (or all-to-all coupled) Bose-Hubbard model after a Mott to superfluid quench, in the limit of large boson densities and for an arbitrary number $V$ of lattice sites, with potential relevance in experiments ranging from cold atoms to superconducting qubits. By means of the truncated Wigner approximation, we predict that crossing a critical quench strength the system undergoes a dynamical phase transition between two regimes that are characterized at long times either by an inhomogeneous population of the lattice (i.e. macroscopical self-trapping) or by the tendency of the mean-field bosonic variables to split into two groups with phase difference $\pi$, that we refer to as $\pi$-synchronization. We show the latter process to be intimately connected to the presence, only for $V \ge 4$, of a manifold of infinitely many fixed points of the dynamical equations. Bipartite fluctuations can provide interesting information about entanglement properties and correlations in many-body quantum systems. We address such fluctuations in relation with the topology of Dirac and Weyl quantum systems, in situations where the relevant particle number is not conserved, leading to additional volume laws scaling with the Quantum Fisher information. Through the example of the $p+ip$ superconductor, we build a relation between charge fluctuations and the associated winding numbers of Dirac cones in the low-energy sector. Topological aspects of the Hamiltonian in the vicinity of these points induce long-range entanglement in real space. We study a one-dimensional interacting quantum liquid hosting a pair of mobile impurities causing backscattering. We determine the effective retarded interaction between the two impurities mediated by the liquid. We show that for strong backscattering this interaction gives rise to resonances and antiresonances in the finite-frequency mobility of the impurity pair. At the antiresonances, the two impurities remain at rest even when driven by a (small) external force. At the resonances, their synchronous motion follows the external drive in phase and reaches maximum amplitude. Using a perturbative renormalization group analysis in quantum tunneling across the impurities, we study the range of validity of our model. We design a driven superconducting box with four spins S=1/2 (qubits) such that coupled devices can give insight on the occurrence of quantum spin liquids and many-body Majorana states. Within one box or island, we introduce a generalized nuclear magnetic resonance algorithm to realize our models and study numerically the spin observables in time as well as the emergent gauge fields. We discuss the stability of the box towards various detuning effects and we include dissipation effects through a Lindblad master equation. Coupling boxes allows us to realize quantum spin liquid phases of Kitaev ${\cal Z}_2$ spin models in various geometries with applications in the toric code. Quantum phase transitions and Majorana physics might be detected by measuring local susceptibilities. We show how to produce a N\' eel state of fluxes by coupling boxes and we address the role of local impurity fluxes leading to random Ising models. We show the emergence of topological Bogoliubov bosonic excitations in the relatively strong coupling limit of an LC (inductance-capacitance) one-dimensional quantum circuit. This dimerized chain model reveals a ${\cal Z}_2$ local symmetry as a result of the counter-rotating wave (pairing) terms. The topology is protected by the sub-lattice symmetry, represented by an anti-unitary transformation. We present a methos to measure the winding of the topological Zak phase across the Brillouin zone by a reflection measurement of (microwave) light. Recently, the frustrated XY model for spins-1/2 on the honeycomb lattice has attracted a lot of attention in relation with the possibility to realize a chiral spin liquid state. This model is relevant to the physics of some quantum magnets. Using the flexibility of ultra-cold atoms setups, we propose an alternative way to realize this model through the Mott regime of the bosonic Kane-Mele-Hubbard model. The phase diagram of this model is derived using the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. Focussing on the Mott phase, we investigate its magnetic properties as a function of frustration. We do find an emergent chiral spin state in the intermediate frustration regime. Using exact diagonalization we study more closely the physics of the effective frustrated XY model and the properties of the chiral spin state. We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of p-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless modes at the edges. In the Az phase, as a result of the emergent Z2 gauge fields and pi-flux ground state, one may build spin-1/2 (loop) qubit operators by analogy to the toric code. In addition, we show how the intermediate gapless B phase evolves in the generalized ladder model. For the brickwall ladder, the $B$ phase is reduced to one line, which is analyzed through perturbation theory in a rung tensor product states representation and bosonization. Finally, we show that doping with a few holes can result in the formation of hole pairs and leads to a mapping with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in polyacetylene; a superconducting-insulating quantum phase transition for these hole pairs is accessible, as well as related topological properties., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, final version - to be published in PRB

In this review, we provide an introduction and overview to some more recent advances in real-time dynamics of quantum impurity models and their realizations in quantum devices. We focus on the Ohmic spin-boson and related models, which describes a single spin-1/2 coupled to an infinite collection of harmonic oscillators. The topics are largely drawn from our efforts over the past years, but we also present a few novel results. In the first part of this review, we begin with a pedagogical introduction to the real-time dynamics of a dissipative spin at both high and low temperatures. We then focus on the driven dynamics in the quantum regime beyond the limit of weak spin-bath coupling. In these situations, the non-perturbative stochastic Schroedinger equation method is ideally suited to numerically obtain the spin dynamics as it can incorporate bias fields $h_z(t)$ of arbitrary time-dependence in the Hamiltonian. We present different recent applications of this method: (i) how topological properties of the spin such as the Berry curvature and the Chern number can be measured dynamically, and how dissipation affects the topology and the measurement protocol, (ii) how quantum spin chains can experience synchronization dynamics via coupling to a common bath. In the second part of this review, we discuss quantum engineering of spin-boson and related models in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED), quantum electrical circuits and cold-atoms architectures. In different realizations, the Ohmic environment can be represented by a long (microwave) transmission line, a Luttinger liquid, a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, a chain of superconducting Josephson junctions. Bipartite charge fluctuations (BCF) have been introduced to provide an experimental indication of many-body entanglement. They have proved themselves to be a very efficient and useful tool to characterize quantum phase transitions in a variety of quantum models conserving the total number of particles (or magnetization for spin systems). In this Letter, we study the BCF in generic one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ (topological) models including the Kitaev superconducting wire model, the Ising chain or various topological insulators such as the SSH model. The considered charge (either the fermionic number or the relative density) is no longer conserved, leading to macroscopic fluctuations of the number of particles. We demonstrate that at phase transitions characterized by a linear dispersion, the BCF probe the change in a winding number that allows one to pinpoint the transition and corresponds to the topological invariant for standard models. Additionally, we prove that a sub-dominant logarithmic contribution is still present at the exact critical point. Its quantized coefficient is universal and characterizes the critical model. We study hard core bosons on a two leg ladder lattice under the orbital effect of a uniform magnetic field. At densities which are incommensurate with flux, the ground state is a Meissner state, or a vortex state, depending on the strength of the flux. When the density is commensurate with the flux, analytical arguments predict the existence of a ground state of central charge $c = 1$, which displays signatures compatible with the expected Laughlin state at $\nu=1/2$. This differs from the coupled wire construction of the Laughlin state in that there exists a nonzero backscattering term in the edge Hamiltonian. We construct a phase diagram versus density and flux in order to delimit the region where this precursor to the Laughlin state is the ground state, by using a combination of bosonization and numerics based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization. We obtain the phase diagram from local observables and central charge. We use bipartite charge fluctuations to deduce the Luttinger parameter for the edge Luttinger liquid corresponding to the Laughlin state. The properties studied with local observables are confirmed by the long distance behavior of correlation functions. Our findings are consistent with a calculation of the many body ground state transverse conductivity in a thin torus geometry for parameters corresponding to the Laughlin state. We present a method to probe real-time dynamics in quantum mesoscopic systems using Ramsey interferometry. This allows us to explore the effect of interactions on quasi-particles in the time domain. We investigate the dephasing effects of an ohmic environment on an electron-hole pair in a tunnel junction. We show that dynamical Coulomb blockade phenomena can be observed for resistances much smaller than the quantum of resistance. Moreover, the crossover between high and low impedance limits can be probed for a constant resistance by a proper control of the voltage modulation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, including supplementary material

We analyze the topological deformations of a spin-1/2 in an effective magnetic field induced by an ohmic quantum dissipative environment at zero temperature. From Bethe Ansatz results and a variational approach, we confirm that the Chern number is preserved in the delocalized phase for $\alpha<1$. We report a divergence of the Berry curvature at the equator when $\alpha_c=1$ that appears at the localization Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition in this model. Recent experiments in quantum circuits have engineered non-equilibrium protocols in time to access topological properties at equilibrium from the measure of the (quasi-)adiabatic out-of-equilibrium spin expectation values. Applying a numerically exact stochastic Schr\"{o}dinger equation we find that, for a fixed sweep velocity, the bath induces a crossover from (quasi-)adiabatic to non-adiabatic dynamical behavior when the spin bath coupling increases. We also investigate the particular regime $H/\omega_c \ll v/H \ll 1$, where the dynamical Chern number observable built from out-of-equilibrium spin expectation values vanishes at $\alpha=1/2$. In this regime, the mapping to an interacting resonance level model enables us to characterize the evolution of the dynamical Chern number in the vicinity of $\alpha=1/2$. Then, we provide an intuitive physical explanation of the breakdown of adiabaticity in analogy to the Faraday effect in electromagnetism. We demonstrate that the driving of the spin leads to the production of a large number of bosonic excitations in the bath, which in return strongly affect the spin dynamics. Finally, we quantify the spin-bath entanglement and build an analogy with an effective model at thermal equilibrium.

We study Kondo screening obtained by coupling Majorana bound states, located on a topological superconducting island, to interacting electronic reservoirs. At the charge degeneracy points of the island, we formulate an exact mapping onto the spin-$1/2$ multi-channel Kondo effect. The coupling to Majorana fermions transforms the tunneling terms into effective fermionic bilinear contributions with a Luttinger parameter $K$ in the leads that is effectively doubled. For strong interaction, $K=1/2$, the intermediate fixed point of the standard multi-channel Kondo model is exactly recovered. It evolves with $K$ and connects to strong coupling in non-interacting case $K=1$, with maximum conductance between the leads and robustness against channel asymmetries similarly to the topological Kondo effect. The realization of synthetic gauge fields has attracted a lot of attention recently in relation with periodically driven systems and the Floquet theory. In ultra-cold atom systems in optical lattices and photonic networks, this allows to simulate exotic phases of matter such as quantum Hall phases, anomalous quantum Hall phases and analogs of topological insulators. In this paper, we apply the Floquet theory to engineer anisotropic Haldane models on the honeycomb lattice and two-leg ladder systems. We show that these anisotropic Haldane models still possess a topologically non-trivial band structure associated with chiral edge modes (without the presence of a net unit flux in a unit cell), then referring to the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Focusing on (interacting) boson systems in s-wave bands of the lattice, we show how to engineer through the Floquet theory, a quantum phase transition between a uniform superfluid and a BEC (Bose-Einstein Condensate) analog of FFLO (Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov) states, where bosons condense at non-zero wave-vectors. We perform a Ginzburg-Landau analysis of the quantum phase transition on the graphene lattice, and compute observables such as chiral currents and the momentum distribution. The results are supported by exact diagonalization calculations and compared with those of the isotropic situation. The validity of high-frequency expansion in the Floquet theory is also tested using time-dependent simulations for various parameters of the model. A superconducting wire described by a p-wave pairing and a Kitaev Hamiltonian exhibits Majorana fermions at its edges and is topologically protected by symmetry. We consider two Kitaev wires (chains) coupled by a Coulomb type interaction and study the complete phase diagram using analytical and numerical techniques. A topological superconducting phase with four Majorana fermions occurs until moderate interactions between chains. For large interactions, both repulsive and attractive, by analogy with the Hubbard model, we identify Mott phases with Ising type magnetic order. For repulsive interactions, the Ising antiferromagnetic order favors the occurrence of orbital currents spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry. By strongly varying the chemical potentials of the two chains, quantum phase transitions towards fully polarized (empty or full) fermionic chains occur. In the Kitaev model, the quantum critical point separating the topological superconducting phase and the polarized phase belongs to the universality class of the critical Ising model in two dimensions. When increasing the Coulomb interaction between chains, then we identify an additional phase corresponding to two critical Ising theories (or two chains of Majorana fermions). We confirm the existence of such a phase from exact mappings and from the concept of bipartite fluctuations. We show the existence of negative logarithmic corrections in the bipartite fluctuations, as a reminiscence of the quantum critical point in the Kitaev model. Other entanglement probes such as bipartite entropy and entanglement spectrum are also used to characterize the phase diagram. We provide analytical and numerical evidence of a spin-triplet FFLO superconductivity in the itinerant Kitaev-Heisenberg model (anti-ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling and ferromagnetic Heisenberg coupling) on the honeycomb lattice around quarter filling. The strong spin-orbit coupling in our model leads to the emergence of 6 inversion symmetry centers for the Fermi surface at non zero momenta in the first Brillouin zone. We show how the Cooper pairs condense into these non-trivial momenta, causing the spatial modulation of the superconducting order parameter. Applying a Ginzburg-Landau expansion analysis, we find that the superconductivity has three separated degenerate ground states with three different spin-triplet pairings. This picture is also supported by exact diagonalizations on finite clusters.

Mesoscopic systems constitute appealing platforms to study many-body physics with light and matter degrees of freedom. The Kondo effect refers to the screening of a spin-1/2 impurity by a cloud of conduction electrons, then forming a many-body Fermi liquid ground state. The Kondo resonance produces a phase shift in the transmitted electronic wave packet which depends on the symmetry and nature of the many-body ground state. Theoretical calculations suggest that the Kondo resonance can interact with the irradiation photon field and should give rise to a {\pi}-phase shift of the photon signal in the case where the ground state is a Fermi liquid. This {\pi}-phase shift of microwave photon is driven from the Korringa-Shiba relation of quantum impurity Fermi-liquid ground states. We report the first observation of such a {\pi}-phase shift in a graphene double quantum dot within a circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture where the microwave photons couple to the pseudo-spin or charge degrees of freedom. The observed Kondo temperature TK ~ 550 mK is in agreement with DC conductance measurements. All our results support the formation of a Kondo resonance located above the Fermi level of the electronic reservoirs and the occurrence of an SU(4) Fermi-liquid ground state. We finally study how the Kondo-photon interactions can be tuned by inter-dot electron tunnel coupling strengths. Our experimental achievements may contribute to a better understanding of many-body physics in hybrid circuit systems, and open up new applications in atomic thin materials from the light-matter interaction.

Two electronic channels competing to screen a single impurity spin, as in the two-channel Kondo model, are expected to generate a ground state with nontrivial entanglement structure. We exploit a spin-chain representation of the two-channel Kondo model to probe the ground-state block entropy, negativity, tangle, and Schmidt gap, using a density matrix renormalization group approach. In the presence of symmetric coupling to the two channels we confirm field-theory predictions for the boundary entropy difference, $\ln (g_{UV}/g_{IR})=\ln(2)/2$, between the ultraviolet and infrared limits and the leading $\ln(x)/x$ impurity correction to the block entropy. The impurity entanglement, $S_{\text{imp}}$, is shown to scale with the characteristic length $\xi_{2CK}$. We show that both the Schmidt gap and the entanglement of the impurity with one of the channels $-$ as measured by the negativity$-$ faithfully serve as order parameters for the impurity quantum phase transition appearing as a function of channel asymmetry, allowing for explicit determination of critical exponents, $\nu\!\approx\! 2$ and $\beta \!\approx\! 0.2$. We review recent developments concerning non-equilibrium quantum dynamics and many-body physics with light, in superconducting circuits and Josephson analogues. We start with quantum impurity models summarizing the effect of dissipation and of driving the system. We mention theoretical and experimental efforts to characterize these non-equilibrium quantum systems. We show how Josephson junction systems can implement the equivalent of the Kondo effect with microwave photons. The Kondo effect is characterized by a renormalized light-frequency and a peak in the Rayleigh elastic transmission of a photon. We also address the physics of hybrid systems comprising mesoscopic quantum dot devices coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. Then, we discuss extensions to Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) Networks allowing to engineer the Jaynes-Cummings lattice and Rabi lattice models. This opens the door to novel many-body physics with light out of equilibrium, in relation with the Mott-superfluid transition observed with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. Then, we summarize recent theoretical predictions for realizing topological phases with light. Synthetic gauge fields and spin-orbit couplings have been successfully implemented with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices --- using time-dependent Floquet perturbations periodic in time, for example --- as well as in photonic lattice systems. Finally, we discuss the Josephson effect related to Bose-Hubbard models in ladder and two-dimensional geometries. The Bose-Hubbard model is related to the Jaynes-Cummings lattice model in the large detuning limit between light and matter. We theoretically investigate a quantum dot coupled to fermionic (electronic) leads and show how zero-point quantum fluctuations stemming from bosonic environments permit the rectification of the current. The bosonic baths are either external impedances modeled as tunable transmission lines or LC resonators (single-mode cavities). Voltage fluctuations stemming from the external impedances at zero temperature are described through harmonic oscillators (photon-like excitations) then producing the quantum vacuum fluctuations. The differing sizes of the zero-point fluctuations of the quantum vacuum break the spatial symmetry of the system if the quantum dot is coupled to two reservoirs or two junctions with different bosonic environments. We address dissipation effects on the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of an ensemble of spins-1/2 coupled via an Ising interaction. Dissipation is modeled by a (ohmic) bath of harmonic oscillators at zero temperature and correspond either to the sound modes of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensate or to the zero-point fluctuations of a long transmission line. We consider the dimer comprising two spins and the quantum Ising chain with long-range interactions, and develop a (mathematically and numerically) exact stochastic approach to address non-equilibrium protocols in the presence of an environment. For the two spin case, we first investigate the dissipative quantum phase transition induced by the environment through quantum quenches, and study the effect of the environment on the synchronization properties. Then, we address Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg-Majorana protocols for two spins, and for the spin array. In this latter case, we adopt a stochastic mean-field point of view and present a Kibble-Zurek type argument to account for interaction effects in the lattice. We introduce generic bosonic models exemplifying that chiral Meissner currents can persist in insulating phases of matter. We first consider interacting bosons on a two-leg ladder. The total density sector can be gapped in a bosonic Mott insulator at odd-integer filling, while the relative density sector remains superfluid due to interchain hopping. Coupling the relative density to gauge fields yields a pseudospin Meissner effect. We show that the same phase arises if the bosons are replaced by spinful fermions confined in Cooper pairs, and find a dual fermionic Mott insulator with spinon currents. We prove that by tuning the mean density the Mott insulator with Meissner currents turns into a low-dimensional bosonic $\nu = \frac{1}{2}$ Laughlin state for strong enough repulsive interactions across the ladder rungs. We finally discuss extensions to multileg ladders and bilayers in which spinon superfluids with Meissner currents become possible. We propose two experimental realizations, one with ultracold atoms in the setup of Atala et al., Nat. Phys. \textbf{8}, 588 (2014) and another with Josephson junction arrays. We engineer topological insulating phases in a fermion-fermion mixture on the honeycomb lattice, without resorting to artificial gauge fields or spin-orbit couplings and considering only local interactions. Essentially, upon integrating out the fast component (characterized by a larger hopping amplitude) in a finite region of dopings, we obtain an effective interaction between the slow fermions at half-filling, which acquires a Haldane mass with opposite parity in the two valleys of the Dirac cones, thus triggering a quantum anomalous Hall effect. We carefully analyze the competition between the induced Semenoff-type mass (producing charge density wave orders in real space) versus the Haldane mass (quantum anomalous Hall phase), as a function of the chemical potential of the fast fermions. If the second species involves spin-1/2 particles, this interaction may induce a quantum spin Hall phase. Such fermion-fermion mixtures can be realized in optical lattices or in graphene heterostructures.
