Here, we review the functioning and importance of deltaic coastal systems in the northern and southern Gulf of Mexico and how petroleum activities have impacted these two important systems. The Mississippi and Usumacinta-Grijalva Deltas are areas of high biological productivity and biodiversity that support the two largest fisheries in the Gulf. The north central Gulf receives inflow from the Mississippi river, the largest discharge in North America. The Mississippi Delta covers about 10,000 km2. The Usumacinta-Grijalva River is the second highest freshwater input to the Gulf and discharges to the Usumacinta-Grijalva/Laguna de Terminos deltaic complex. These two areas are the largest petroleum producing regions in the Gulf, involving both inshore and offshore production. Petroleum activities impact coastal ecosystems in two important ways. In inshore areas dominated by coastal wetlands, there has been enormous physical disruption of the natural environment that affected hydrology and system functioning. In both inshore and offshore areas, spilled oil and release of high salinity produced water has led to widespread toxic pollution. Documentation of petroleum activity impacts on coastal marine ecosystems is much more advanced in the Mississippi Delta. Here, we describe how petroleum production impacts coastal ecosystems and discuss how restoration and management can restore the functioning of impacted coastal ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wetland restoration projects are frequently evaluated by their hydrologic roles and vegetation characteristics, but their success in restoring biogeochemical processes, such as denitrification, is less well known. To determine how restoration of structure affects specific ecosystem processes, denitrificafion potential, soluble organic C (SOC) concentrations, and soil moisture were measured seasonally over a 1-yr period in replicated natural bottomland hardwood (BLH) wetlands (NAT), restored BLH wetlands with hydrology reestablished (RWH), and restored BLH wetlands without hydrology reestablished (RWOH). Denitrification potential was significantly higher in NAT wetlands (657 ng [N.sub.2]O-N [g.sup.-1] soil [h.sup.-1]) than in RWOH (167 ng [N.sub.2]O-N [g.sup.-1] soil [h.sup.-1]) (P = 0.01). Soil moisture was highest in NAT wetlands and lowest in RWOH (P = 0.01), but no differences were measured in SOC concentrations in three out of the four seasons sampled. Because RWOH wetlands exhibited denitrification potentials which were significantly lower than NAT wetland sites, these results demonstrate that a BLH wetland restored without the natural hydrologic regime reestablished will not be a replacement for a natural BLH wetland in terms of biogeochemical processes such as denitrification.

The Central Wetlands Unit (CWU), covering 12,000 hectares in St. Bernard and Orleans Parishes, Louisiana, was once a healthy baldcypress-water tupelo swamp and fresh and low salinity marsh before construction of levees isolated the region from Mississippi River floodwaters. Construction of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO), which funneled saltwater inland from the Gulf of Mexico, resulted in a drastic ecosystem change and caused mortality of almost all trees and low salinity marsh, but closure of the MRGO has led to decreases in soil and surface water salinity. Currently, the area is open water, brackish marsh, and remnant baldcypress stands. We measured hydrology, soils, water and sediment chemistry, vegetation composition and productivity, accretion, and soil strength to determine relative health of the wetlands. Vegetation species richness is low and above- and belowground biomass is up to 50% lower than a healthy marsh. Soil strength and bulk density are low over much of the area. A baldcypress wetland remains near a stormwater pumping station that also has received treated municipal effluent for about four decades. Based on the current health of the CWU, three restoration approaches are recommended, including: (1) mineral sediment input to increase elevation and soil strength; (2) nutrient-rich fresh water to increase productivity and buffer salinity; and (3) planting of freshwater forests, along with fresh and low salinity herbaceous vegetation. The Maurepas swamp is the second largest contiguous coastal forest in Louisiana but it is highly degraded due to subsidence, near permanent flooding, nutrient starvation, nutria herbivory, and saltwater intrusion. Observed tree mortality rates at study sites in the Maurepas swamp are very high (up to 100% tree mortality in 11 years) and basal area decreased with average salinities of <1 ppt. Habitat classification, vegetation productivity and mortality, and surface elevation changes show a clear trajectory from stagnant, nearly permanently flooded forests with broken canopy to degraded forests with sparse baldcypress and dominated by herbaceous species and open water to open water habitat for most of the Maurepas swamp without introduction of fresh water to combat saltwater intrusion and stimulate productivity and accretion. Healthy forests in the Maurepas are receiving fresh water containing nutrients and sediments from urban areas, high quality river water, or secondarily treated municipal effluent. Currently, two proposed diversions into the swamp are via Hope Canal (57 m3 , s -1 ) and Blind River (142 m3 , s -1 ). These diversions would greatly benefit their immediate area but they are too small to influence the entire Maurepas sub-basin, especially in terms of accretion. A large diversion (>1422 m3, s -1 ) is needed to deliver the adequate sediments to achieve high accretion rates and stimulate organic soil formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here we review an extensive series of studies of Barataria Basin, an economically and ecologically important coastal basin of the Mississippi Delta. Human activity has greatly altered the hydrology of the basin by decreasing riverine inflows from leveeing of the river and its distributaries, increasing runoff with high nutrient concentrations from agricultural fields, and channelization of wetlands of the basin interior that has altered flow paths to often bypass wetlands. This has resulted in degraded water quality in the upper basin and wetland loss in the lower basin. Trophic state analysis found the upper basin to be eutrophic and the lower basin to be mesotrophic. Gross aquatic primary production (GAPP) was highest in the upper basin, lowest in the mid basin, and intermediate in the lower basin. Forested wetlands in the upper basin have degraded over the past several decades due to increased periods of flooding, while there has been massive loss of emergent wetlands in the lower basin due to increasing water levels and pervasive alteration of hydrology. Restoration will entail reconnection of waterways with surrounding wetlands in the upper basin, and implementation of river sediment diversions, marsh creation using dredged sediments and barrier island restoration. Factors affecting growth of softstem bulrush (Scirpus validus), an obligate wetland plant frequently used in subsurface- flow constructedwetlands in North America, were studied in a controlled environmental chamber. Effects of media depth (30- and 46-cm), hydraulic retention time (HRT) (2- and 6-day), and water- level drawdown (drawdown vs. no drawdown) on plant growth in 24 microcosms were investigated. Weekly root and stem growth was measured and stem health assessed to determine effects of treatments on plant vigor. Water-level drawdown was detrimental to plant growth, increasing the percentage of dead stems.Stem production was higher in microcosms with a 46-cm media depth than those with a 30-cm depth and also higher in microcosms that were permanently flooded than in those with fluctuating water levels. Root production was greater in microcosms with a 30-cm media depth than inthose with a 46-cm depth, and root production was also greater in microcosms that were constantly flooded than in those drawn down. Scirpus validus is a robust plant that grows well in gravel media microcosms; however, problems are experienced when rhizomes and roots dry outduring water drainage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
