Hazardous alcohol use is increasing amongst some groups of women, yet little is known about the underlying reasons or gender-specific influences. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between psychological childbirth trauma and women's hazardous alcohol use. We aimed to identify predictors of hazardous alcohol use given childbirth-related trauma, other life trauma (combat, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, experiences threatening loss of life or loss of loved ones) and coping motives for drinking, whilst controlling for age, socio-economic status, negative affect and other drinking motives (enhancement and social motives). Australian data from the Why Women Drink survey (N = 301) was analysed. Women who experienced childbirth as traumatic scored higher overall for hazardous drinking and endorsed coping reasons more strongly than those who did not. Analyses of individual differences affecting hazardous drinking revealed coping reasons, rather than trauma itself, as the strongest predictor in a regression model. Other significant predictors included socio-economic status, enhancement of positive emotions and, marginally, negative affect. Findings identified a link between traumatic childbirth and hazardous drinking as a coping strategy. Prospective research is required to characterise predisposing and perpetuating vulnerabilities determining maladaptive coping after traumatic childbirth, and to inform effective interventions. Childbirth can be psychologically traumatic but there is minimal research investigating whether psychological birth trauma (PBT) is a risk factor for increased maternal drinking or what factors are associated with alcohol use in mothers who have and who have not experienced PBT.An online observational survey of mothers with (n = 291) and without (n = 230) experience of PBT. Participants self-reported alcohol use and completed measures of alcohol harm, drinking motives, trauma (general and birth related) and mental health. Free text options were included to complement quantitative data.Irrespective of PBT status, stronger endorsement of negative reinforcement drinking motives (e.g. coping) predicted higher alcohol use and hazardous drinking. However, children’s age influenced this relationship. In mothers with a history of PBT, negative reinforcement drinking motives predicted weekly alcohol use and alcohol harm as their children grew older. In mothers without PBT, positive reinforcement drinking motives predicted greater weekly alcohol use as children grew older, but negative drinking motives predicted reduced drinking. Multiple aspects of the parental role influenced drinking (e.g. coping-based motives) and non-drinking (e.g. child well-being motives) behaviour. Changes in motives from pre-motherhood to motherhood focused around a shift from positive to negative reinforcement drinking motives. Mothers with PBT reported mental health symptoms as both a reason to drink and not to drink alcohol.This study provides novel evidence on maternal alcohol use, and how PBT may influence drinking behaviour in mothers. Importantly, PBT may be a type of trauma which is associated with a delayed risk for maladaptive alcohol use and risk of alcohol harm. However, there is a lack of knowledge of universities' views of current implementation of health and wellbeing initiatives. Therefore, we examined the views of Australian universities on the implementation of health and wellbeing policies and programs within Australian universities.An online survey of Australian universities asked respondents to rate their level of agreement with five statements pertaining to the implementation of health and wellbeing policies and programs for students within Australian universities using a 5‐point Likert scale (strongly agree to strongly disagree).Eleven universities completed the survey (28.2% response rate). All respondents (n = 11) agreed that universities play a crucial role in supporting the health and wellbeing of their students and report access to sufficient expertise to do this. Approximately three‐quarters (8/11) agreed that universities know what policies and programs to implement to support their students' health and wellbeing. There was less agreement that universities have sufficient resources (2/11 agree) or access to sufficient information about the health and wellbeing of their student population (3/11 agree) to support the implementation of health and wellbeing policies and programs.Australian universities demonstrated strong organisational commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of their students but highlighted some key barriers to implementation.Findings from this preliminary research highlight potential barriers and facilitators to the implementation of health and wellbeing policies and programs in Australian universities, and potential foci for future research. Child abuse and neglect in young children can lead to trauma-related stress symptoms that can be challenging to manage. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), a strong evidence-based behavioral parent training program used for young children with behavior issues, has been used in its traditional form with increasing frequency with children and families who have trauma histories, with clinicians tailoring PCIT to use with children who have experienced trauma. Trauma-Directed Interaction (TDI) is a new systematic adaption to the standard PCIT parent training program that has the potential to help treat trauma in younger children. TDI includes several trauma-informed techniques that are added to a course of standard PCIT treatment including psychoeducation regarding trauma, recognition of feelings, and emotional regulation. This case study illustrates the use of a manualized trauma adaptation to PCIT (TDI) with a three-year-old boy who had a history of child maltreatment and his caregiver. This case provides a summary of the progression of this intervention and the results obtained. Results from the case indicated that TDI treatment was effective in not only reducing child trauma and behavioral symptoms but also in reducing mild caregiver mental health concerns. Background Alcohol misuse and depression represent two major social and health problems globally. These conditions commonly co-occur and both are associated with significant cognitive impairment. Despite this, few studies have examined the impact on cognitive functioning of co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression. This study aims to critically review findings from peer-reviewed published articles examining neuropsychological test performance among samples of people with co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression. Method A comprehensive literature search was conducted, yielding six studies reporting neuropsychological profiles of people with co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression. Results comparing cognitive functioning of people with this comorbidity to those with alcohol misuse alone, depression alone, healthy controls and published norms were examined as well as those describing the correlation between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning in people with alcohol use disorders. Results In the majority of instances, the comorbid groups did not differ significantly from those with depression only or alcohol misuse only, nor from healthy controls or published norms. In the cases where a difference in neuropsychological test scores between groups was found, it was not consistently identified across studies. However, visual memory was identified in two studies as being impaired in comorbid samples and is worthy of inclusion in future studies. Limitations Due to the small number of included studies and the large variation in inclusion criteria as well as differing assessment tools and methodologies between studies, the review did not include a quantitative synthesis. Conclusions Research into cognitive deficits among people with singly occurring versus co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression is accumulating. Evidence suggests that the neuropsychological performance among samples with this comorbidity is generally not severely impaired and is unlikely to preclude benefit from treatment. Although apartheid officially ended in 1994, the issue of race as a primary identity marker has continued to permeate many aspects of private and public life in post-apartheid South Africa. This paper seeks to understand how youth at two South African tertiary institutions position themselves in relation to race and the apartheid past. Our data include four focus group interviews from two universities, one which can be described as historically ‘black’ and the other as histor- ically ‘white’. Given the complex nature of the data, we elected to use a combination of corpus linguistics and discourse analysis as our methodological approach. We explore how words such asblack,white,coloured,they,we,usandthemfeature in the interviews. Our analysis shows that the positioning by the interviewees reflects a complexity and ambivalence that is at times contradictory although several broader discourse patterns can be distilled. In particular, we argue, that all groups employ a range of discursive strategies so as to resist being positioned in the historical positions of ‘victim’ and ‘perpetrator’. Abstract: Depression and alcohol use disorders frequently co-occur and are highly prevalent. Both conditions are known to impair cognitive functioning, yet research into the role of these impairments in response to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is limited. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between baseline neuropsychological performance, severity of depressive symptoms and alcohol use disorders. Participants with current depression and hazardous alcohol use were functioning in the average range on all neuropsychological measures prior to treatment entry. Baseline measures of drinking severity and a range of cognitive functions were inversely correlated. After controlling for other baseline variables, superior baseline cognitive functioning predicted greater reductions in depression severity after 17 weeks. These predictive effects occurred across both brief and extended interventions. Findings suggest that improvement in depression following psychological treatment is enhanced by greater fluid reasoning ability and is predicted by executive functioning, regardless of the treatment length or problem focus. The problems of illiteracy in health contexts have been well documented in the literature and include such serious repercussions as medication non-compliance and failure to seek medical help during the course of an illness. The Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM) is a standardised health literacy test developed in the United States that has been previously administered and researched in South Africa (Lecoko, 2000). It is an objective vocabulary test, designed as a screening instrument to identify the health literacy levels of patients in clinics, which uses item recognition of 66 health-related words. Lecoko found that, in a South African setting, only 8 out of the 66 words in the US-developed test could be deemed acceptable. Therefore, the current study focused on the principled relexicalisation of the REALM, using words gathered from health information and promotional texts in local clinics, hypothesising that this would improve its applicability. After administration to a statistically similar group of respondents, the number of acceptable words on the test increased from eight to 38. Thus it is concluded that principled relexicalisation may be one way of improving the applicability of standardised health literacy tests to local populations and settings. However, the limitations of standardised tests may prove to be a significant barrier overshadowing the value of relexicalisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides an analysis of a conversation between young women friends, which is analysed in terms of Coates' (1988; 1997; 1999) work on the features of conversation amongst female friends. Coates identifies a number of features which, she says, are typical of conversation between (adult) female friends: a domestic setting, female participants, topics relating to people and feelings, and various formal features including smooth topic development, frequent minimal responses, supportive forms of simultaneous speech and epistemic modality ('softening' strategies, including tag questions) (Coates, 1988: 97). The overarching function, she claims, is one of solidarity-building and support: 'the maintenance of good social relationships' and 'the reaffirming and strengthening of friendship' (Coates, 1988: 98). While this last feature, the function of conversation between women friends, is borne out by the extract to be analysed, the participants in my study utilise different strategies to accomplish it and, in several respects, do not utilise the other features Coates claims to be typical. The research shows, through a detailed analysis of a nine-minute extract from a conversation between three women friends, that the features assumed by Coates to be central conversational strategies in the building of female friendship are not the only ways for women to accomplish this function. This article describes a branching model developed for the analysis of interaction in small teaching groups in a tertiary setting. Based within Conversation Analysis, the model constitutes a set of justifications for the validity of utterances in terms of their place on the conversational floor. Examples of the classifications included in the model are provided from a broader study of interaction in tutorials at an Eastern Cape university. Child abuse and neglect in very young children can lead to trauma-related stress symptoms that can be challenging to treat. Children exposed to multiple traumas occurring in the context of a caregiving relationship are sometimes more severely affected, evidenced by diverse negative behavioral, physical, social, and emotional consequences. Some of these children go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a dyadic play-based treatment for children with behavior problems and their parents or caregivers. There is limited research relating to the application of PCIT with very young children with PTSD with some studies actively excluding families where PTSD was present (Herschell et al., 2017). Additionally, there are no articles relating to treatment of a child restored to the care of a parent following out-of-home care (OOHC) and fewer still relating to a child restored to the care of her father. This case study illustrates the use of PCIT with a 3-year-old girl with PTSD, recently restored to her father's care. It highlights how the use of PCIT in this case not only improved behavioral indicators of traumatic stress, but also afforded this child permanency and stability. The case study provides a summary of the progression of this intervention and the results obtained throughout treatment and 4 years post-intervention. The results indicated that PCIT, with trauma-informed tailoring, was an effective treatment in this case and contributed to safe and permanent care for this child. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
